Taylor Kitsch Says Signing onto ‘Painkiller’ with Pete Berg Was a ‘No-Brainer’
The Friday Night Lights alum digs deep to play a man addicted to opioids in the new limited series.
For Taylor Kitsch, joining the cast of the scripted limited series Painkiller was a “no-brainer” for several personal reasons. One, it was another chance to collaborate with showrunner Pete Berg, who worked with Kitsch on his breakout role as Tim Riggins in the 2006 football drama Friday Night Lights.
“He’s like an older brother to me,” Kitsch said of Berg on the set of Painkiller in early 2022, prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. “We’ve been through a lot, and when I got this call, it was quite simple, to be honest.” After Friday Night Lights, Kitsch and Berg teamed up on the 2012 blockbuster Battleship and again on 2013’s Lone Survivor. “You already have that trust,” said Kitsch, “and the shorthand is really important as well.”
That trust was necessary in grappling with the heavy subject matter of Painkiller, a fictionalized retelling of some of the origins of the opioid epidemic that is believed to have caused over 300,000 American overdose deaths over the last two decades. The six-episode series hones in on an ensemble of characters to tell a broader story: Richard Sackler (Matthew Broderick), the billionaire senior executive at Purdue Pharma who pushes the wide distribution of opiates for profit; Edie Flowers (Uzo Aduba), an investigator at the US Attorney’s office who chases down answers about OxyContin; Shannon Schaeffer (West Duchovny), a recent college grad who’s recruited to Purdue to sell the drugs directly to doctors; and Glen Kryger (Kitsch), a mechanic who, after getting injured on the job, is prescribed OxyContin, which traps him in a vicious cycle of addiction.
Although Glen is a wholly fictional character, he’s the series’ main face of OxyContin’s devastating effects — another reason why Kitsch felt a personal responsibility in portraying Glen’s struggle. Kitsch has watched people close to him fight addiction. “Man, it’s pretty close to me, this thing,” he said. “Unfortunately, I think we’re all one degree away from someone who’s an addict.”
Authentically capturing Glen’s attempts at detoxing as he hides the seriousness of his addiction from his wife Lily (Carolina Bartczak) and stepson Tyler (Jack Mulhern) required some creative risk-taking from both Kitsch and Berg. Berg’s directing style, which Kitsch knows well, is dynamic and at times improvisational to keep the performances raw and real. “Sometimes he tries to get you out of your own head or your own way,” said Kitsch. “You don’t get faulted for mistakes — he just pushes you left or right. He keeps the set very alive and you move quick.”
The conversation about the opioid epidemic is far from over, as everyone involved in Painkiller understands, and Kitsch hopes his portrayal of Glen helps continue the conversation and remove some of the stigma and shame about addiction. “I’m very lucky to have served a lot of true stories and heavy things,” said Kitsch. “And this is right up there for me in the sense of purpose, of why I get to do what I do.”
Painkiller is now streaming on Netflix.

“I can’t breathe, the pepper spray is hurting me.” These are the words spoken by Tauris Sledge, a highschool student attending Hamilton County Public school in the Chattanooga area. The police do not provide safety in our schools, they are a ticking time bomb of anti-Black racism, brutality, and violence against young people and children. Tyler McRae’s abusive behavior against young Black people is a systemic issue, and it’s not just a case of a bad apple; having police in schools is rotten to the core.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has a history of violent offenses against community members, particularly Black people, in the Chattanooga area. School should be a learning environment and not a place of brutal punishment. Children and young people should be able to learn from their mistakes at school, or take a break from class when they’re not feeling themself, not face humiliation and police brutality for minor misbehavior or taking rest. School should not be modeled after the systems of brutality that impact our daily lives. This was an instance of kids being kids, and cops being cops.
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, and the Hamilton County Department of Education, both need to be held accountable for allowing Tyler McRae to be around children and work as a School Police Officer. The family of Tauris Sledge, his classmates, the students at East Ridge High school, the Chattanooga community, and Tarius himself deserve justice. The SRO contract with Hamilton County Schools states that “SRO’s are not to be used as disciplinarians”, and yet Tyler McRae was allowed to act as the School Police disciplinarian.

I vincitori del Premio Pulitzer 2024
Chi sono i vincitori del Premio Pulitzer 2024? Giornalisti, scrittori, saggisti, fotografi che hanno saputo raccontare la realtà che ci circonda tra guerre e cambiamenti. Come sempre, i premi sono stati assegnati dalla Columbia University, teatro, in queste settimane, di manifestazioni pro Palestina.
Il fil rouge della guerra
La guerra che si sta consumando a Gaza è stato un po' il fil rouge di questa 108° edizione del Premio Pulitzer. Infatti, ben due premi più uno speciale sono stati conferiti a giornalisti e operatori che hanno testimoniato quello che sta accadendo in Israele e Palestina dall'attacco del 7 ottobre e non solo.
Il primo di questi premi, per la Reportistica internazionale, è andato al New York Times
"Per la sua copertura ampia e rivelatrice dell'attacco letale di Hamas nel sud di Israele il 7 ottobre, per i fallimenti dell'intelligence israeliana e per la risposta radicale e mortale dell'esercito israeliano a Gaza".
Il secondo, per la sezione Fotografie delle ultime notizie, è stato assegnato, invece, ai fotografi della Reuters
"Per fotografie crude e urgenti che documentano l'attacco mortale del 7 ottobre in Israele da parte di Hamas e le prime settimane del devastante assalto israeliano a Gaza".
Il Pulitzer per la sezione Saggistica generale è andato a Nathan Thrall per il suo Una giornata nella vita di Abed Salama: Anatomia di una tragedia di Gerusalemme edito da Metropolitan Books.
"Un resoconto intimo e finemente documentato della vita sotto l'occupazione israeliana della Cisgiordania, raccontato attraverso il ritratto di un padre palestinese il cui figlio di cinque anni muore in un violento incidente con uno scuolabus quando le squadre di soccorso israeliane e palestinesi vengono ritardate dalle norme di sicurezza" recita la motivazione.
Vincitori del Premio Pulitzer 2024: la reportistica "interna"
Cos'è accaduto negli Stati Uniti nel 2023? A dircelo sono anche i reportage premiati ai Pulitzer. Per la sezione Servizio pubblico il premio è andato ai giornalisti Joshua Kaplan, Justin Elliott, Brett Murphy, Alex Mierjeski e Kirsten Berg. Il loro lavoro è stato
"Un rapporto rivoluzionario e ambizioso che ha squarciato lo spesso muro di segretezza che circonda la Corte Suprema per rivelare come un piccolo gruppo di miliardari politicamente influenti ha corteggiato i giudici con doni sontuosi e viaggi, spingendo la Corte ad adottare il suo primo codice di condotta".
La sezione Reportistica nazionale ha assegnato due premi: uno alla Reuters
"Per una serie illuminante di storie di responsabilità incentrate sulle attività automobilistiche e aerospaziali di Elon Musk, storie che hanno mostrato notevole ampiezza e profondità e hanno provocato indagini ufficiali sulle pratiche delle sue aziende in Europa e negli Stati Uniti".
Il secondo è andato, invece, al Washington Post
"Per il suo esame che fa riflettere sul fucile semiautomatico AR-15, che ha costretto i lettori a fare i conti con gli orrori provocati dall'arma spesso utilizzata per le sparatorie di massa in America".
Sarah Conway del City Bureau e Trina Reynolds-Tyler dell'Invisible Institute sono le vincitrici del Premio Pulitzer, sezione Reportistica locale
"Per la loro serie di indagini sulle ragazze e donne nere scomparse a Chicago che hanno rivelato come il razzismo sistemico e l’incuria del dipartimento di polizia abbiano contribuito alla crisi".
Strumenti di repressione
La repressione della libertà personale e di espressione è un fenomeno molto documentato e il Premio Pulitzer ha intercettato le testimonianze. David E. Hoffman del Washington Post ha vinto il premio, sezione Scrittura editoriale
"Per una serie avvincente e ben documentata sulle nuove tecnologie e sulle tattiche utilizzate dai regimi autoritari per reprimere il dissenso nell’era digitale e su come possono essere combattute".
La sezione Commento del Pulitzer ha premiato Vladimir Kara-Murza, collaboratore del Washington Post
"Per le colonne appassionate scritte con grande rischio personale dalla sua cella di prigione, mettendo in guardia sulle conseguenze del dissenso nella Russia di Vladimir Putin e insistendo su un futuro democratico per il suo paese".

Week 7: Body Modification
The pornification of, well, everything is something that has been bothering me recently. Let's speak about it. The primary source of this is social media, but it can be found everywhere: in obscenely provocative advertisements and influencer photos in skimpy attire. It seems strange when everything starts to resemble a softcore music video, don't get me wrong, I'm all for body positivity and confidence. Consider this: how often have you felt that your Instagram feed is merely a series of thirst-quenchers when you browse through it? It wears me out! Furthermore, it might be quite disorienting for younger kids to be inundated with these pictures all the time. It doesn't precisely provide positive standards for partnerships and dating.
The term "pornification" describes how advances in technology have affected the production, accessibility, and use of pornographic material. Pornification can also refer to broad opening up and deregulation processes in the domain of pornography, in addition to technical advances in the media (Paasonen 2016). Pornification is the portrayal of straight people in a way that is 'porn chic' with the intention of appealing to men (Drenten, Gurrieri, & Tyler 2019). Particularly in the present day, a growing number of social media platforms permit pornographic content. Instagram, one of the largest social media platforms worldwide, has experienced issues with pornography. Despite the implementation of material control and community guidelines, sexually explicit or suggestive information can still be found on Instagram.
It's time to press the reset button. Although social media may be a fantastic medium for expressing oneself, the main goal shouldn't be to appear as though you belong on a magazine cover. Let's honor uniqueness, originality, and authenticity! More exists in life and in each of us than counting the number of likes we can get on a skimpy selfie. To be more specific, Instagram users who want to participate in controlled sexualized shoutouts can take a screenshot of a female user's uploaded image, submit it to the page, and tag the original user in the image or description. As a result, sexualized shoutout pages serve as a methodical starting point for our search for specific female Instagram users who have garnered a lot of attention (Drenten, Gurrieri & Tyler 2019). They also reflect attention currency on the network. Taking everything into consideration, the utilization of microcelebrities underscores the significance of producing and consuming content responsibly, given the social ramifications of pornography. By acknowledging the ways in which production, distribution, and consumption influence societal perspectives on health and body image, we can create a more encouraging and welcoming atmosphere for everybody. Laws that prioritize mental health and well-being must be changed, as well as increased awareness and education, in order to address negative body image and body dysmorphic disorder.
