the velvet of their usual booth was as flawless and comfortable as ever, and iza nestled back into their spot with a little sigh, sipping at their bloody mary– heavy on the blood- and eyeballing their companion with only a faint bit of judgement. faint by their standards, anyway, or so they were telling themself. iza wasn’t exactly known for holding their tongue under the best of circumstances, and certainly not when it came to people they were close to. like ty, or micah.

“i’m just saying,” iza said, for what was definitely not the first time that evening, “it feels like it’s in such bad taste to wear velvet to a club where you know full well that the booths are velvet too! i love velvet, you’ve seen my wardrobe, but here it makes you look like part of the furniture that grew working legs and opposable thumbs-”

“pardon,” micah said abruptly, interrupting them and waving down the next person to pass their table. “settle a debate for us, will you?” he stood lithely, exiting the booth to stand with crossed arms. “these pants. poor taste for the venue or no?” the question was posed with a smile just sharp enough to divulge his waning patience.

“they totally are!” iza pitched in. “velvet. he looks like–” 

“they’re not even the same color!” micah snapped, angling towards iza for a moment. "they're black! the booths are red!" then, he rounded back on the poor sap they’d dragged into their argument. “well? what do you think?”

A 78 of Hank’s “Lovesick Blues” turned up in my house when I was kid, and I remember enjoying it. In recent years I started performing regularly in assisted living homes, and my set includes Hank’s “Hey Good Lookin’” (along with “Jambalaya”). He wrote and recorded "Hey, Good Lookin'" in 1951(it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001). The song has been covered by countless artists and was a precursor to the genre known as Rockabilly. Hank was friendly with musician Jimmy Dickens. Having told Dickens that Dickens needed a hit record if he was going to become a star, Williams said he'd write it, and penned "Hey Good Lookin'" in only 20 minutes while on a plane with Dickens and entertainer Minnie Pearl. A week later Williams recorded it himself, jokingly telling Dickens, "That song's too good for you!" Here’s my cover of it (recorded by Chris von Sneidern).
