“His hound is tae the hunting gane His hawk tae fetch the wild fowl hame His lady’s ta’en anither mate, o So we can hae oor dinner sweet, o We can hae oor dinner sweet”
“Ye’ll sit on his white hoose-bane And I’ll pick oot his bonny blue e’en Wi’ mony a lock o’ his golden hair, o We’ll theek oor nest when it grows bare, o Theek oor nest when it grows bare”

Found a new amazing version of Twa Corbies. It leaves out two verses and adds two more but the caws and Geiger counter make it so so cool. I spent the entire day at work wanting to listen to it.

Musical Munday
//This munday I have for you a ballad that is thought to have originated in 18th century Scotland. It is written in Scots and thus may not be entirely intelligible to those listeners not well-versed in such. The song recounts a conversation between two crows regarding the body of a knight.

my latest unhinged fic au idea inspired by scottish folk music* is a binggeyuan au loosely based on “the devil’s courtship,” except obviously they DO actually fall in love in the end and the song is like the regret of chunshan style story that gets told about Righteous Cultivator Seduced By Rich Demon Emperor, usually by observers who have rightly noted binghe’s tendency to dress up shen yuan as fancily as he can get away with but are mistaken about why he does this
*i got this far into writing the post before i got sidetracked doing some cursory musicology research. afaict “the devil’s courtship” was written by battlefield band — i can’t immediately find any references to it that precede the release of their 2001 album happy daze — and they added the devil-related bits, but other than that it’s basically similar to a traditional song variously known as “the keys of canterbury” and “paper of pins”. the battlefield band version is rly good though so i’ll take it

🌊 The Book of Ballads and Sagas by Charles Vess
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Collecting together the critically acclaimed series by the legendary fantasy artist Charles Vess, this compendium of Irish, English, and Scottish folklore/fairy tales returns to print! This collection includes works written by Neil Gaiman, Charles de Lint, Jane Yolen, and more- even including Vess’ unfinished saga “Skade”!
This book of comic-depictions of classic ballads and songs is spectacular! There is so much research and care and love that went into the creation of each ballad, each song, each folktale. It has lust, demons, harrowing adventures, and fairies- all things that make a ballad good.
My favorite stories in this collection were “Twa Corbies”, a rhyme about two crows; “Thomas the Rhymer”, an absolute classic; and Vess’ “Skade”, a comic saga about the goddess from Norse mythology whom I love. A fabulous collection all in all!

Mary Beth Carty emailed a photo: "Hi Marc,
Here is a pic of myself (accordion), my sister Lilly Cart (bodrhan), and my 3rd cousin Heather MacIsaac performing a concert of Irish songs and tunes at the Antigonish Heritage Museum, the former train station in my hometown. The acoustics are great in this space and there was a full crowd.  Volunteers from the Heritage Association provided tea, juice, and snacks for the attendees. We did a number of sing - alongs and there were lots of moments when the crowd joined us on beautiful choruses. A great time! "
James OConnor emailed a photo: "Hi Marc Here is a pic with Jim O’Connor and Jim Chetz Keegan of Boston Blackthorne backstage at the beautiful Colony Theatre in Woodstock NY with the Dublin City Ramblers. We opened the show for the Ramblers who sounded fantastic and were incredibly gracious to us."
Jeffrey McCafferty emailed: "We had a record day in pittsburgh…America’s Grand St Patrick’s Day powered by the Pittsburgh Penguins…featuring 500,000 spectators, FNB’s St.Patrick’s Family Fair in the Square, 200 entries with 20,000 participants, great weather, 20 bands"
Virginia Davis emailed: "Hi Marc  -  Happy Birthday!  I’m super - swamped today and maybe tomorrow, but I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!  We actually have a new CD I need to get over to you  -  thanks! "
Betty Collette emailed a shirt picture: "Hi Marc  -  I was sewing pillows, cooking corned beef dinner, baking blueberry scones, and listening to Irish music. Here's my newest tshirt of The High Kings. We recently were lucky to see them nearby in Tomball, Texas!
Happy St. Patrick's Day and Happy Birthday, too!! "
