Here Mountain, Mountain by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at a roadside pullout along U.S. Route 64 with view looking to the west-southwest to ridges and peaks present with the Brazos Cliffs in the Tusas Mountains. What I wanted to capture with this image was a zoomed in view to those cliffs, but include some foreground interest along the mountainside, leading up to them. The rest was balancing the overcast skies above which would be a color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

Sagebrush Songs arises from the northern New Mexico landscape, remote and unique. The area encompasses the Rio Grande rift and the Taos plateau, a desert mesa encircled by the mountains of the Tusas and Sangre de Christo ranges of the southern Rockies. Prominent features include Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico, and Pueblo Peak (locally known as Taos Mountain), source of the Taos Pueblo’s water supply. As a transitional zone between alpine forests and shortgrass prairie, the sagebrush scrubland supports diverse animal and plant communities. Such landscapes and their empty spaces became the primary focus of classical Chinese poetry, with its Taoist and Ch’an Buddhist roots. Sagebrush Songs is my own meditation on northern New Mexico landscapes as manifestations of the Way of all things.

Poet, scholar, fiber artist, watercolor sketcher, and aspiring naturalist, Margaret Lee finds poems in Oklahoma prairies, New Mexico deserts, Oregon seashores, and inner landscapes. Margaret earned a B.A. in History from Seattle University, Seattle, WA; an M.Div. from Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, OK; and a Th.D. from the Melbourne College of Divinity, Melbourne, Australia. Her academic research and publications focus on the ancient Greek language and the history and culture of the ancient world. Her first poetry chapbook, Someone Else’s Earth (Finishing Line Press 2021), builds poems around the surviving fragments of Sappho, “The Poetess” of ancient Greece.

Ciao from Sicily! Yesterday we made a pilgrimage to the Labirinto di Arianna, or Ariadne's Labyrinth, a sculpture high in the Nebrodi Mountains of Messina Province. The massive work is one of many large pieces that are part of @fiumaradarte, a collection of outdoor scyptures. The brainchild of empresario Antonio Presti, the labyrinth was created in 1989 by sculptor Italo Lanfredini. Arianna (Ariadne) is a deity in ancient Greek and Roman myth. The wife of Dionysius, she assisted Theseus by giving him thread to find his way out of the Minotaur's labyrinth. Visiting this site is a special journey, both to arrive at the maze and to walk it. It is a journey into one's own insight and soul. My least favorite thing to post about, but it’s a reality when driving 9000 miles in 3 months. This Red-shafted Northern Flicker nosedived my windshield while driving through the Tusas Mountains. One of the most beautiful birds I’ve ever killed, and I hate to say I’ve killed my fair share over the years. I made sure to give this guy a proper burial. The view of Cefalù is frustratingly blocked by a tunnel made up of several archways, which create a series of half snapshots like a stilted slide show of the seaside. The clear deep aquamarine sea is dotted with anchored boats and the beach umbrellas of intrepid beachgoers who climb like mountain goats over the rocky outcrops lining the coast.

It is strange to me, brought up on Australian beaches, to see people sunbathing on the rocks. There is no beach here, only large boulders and stones, no sand to be seen anywhere. Admiring the summertime ocean and suddenly feeling very hot, I am overwhelmed by the desire to leap out of the train into the water. Looking out lustfully at the sea, I see a wonderful mirage directly in front of the railway line.

We Should Share Silence Hand in Hand by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: We Should Share Silence Hand in Hand Not because I don't want to hear you It's because I actually want to listen to you So maybe by stopping, I will take note And see all the wonderful things about you A cool Autumn breeze blowing across a grassy meadow Smells from evergreens on a distant hillside Brazos Cliffs rising in the mountains So I have taken note and will remember What you said and what I experienced and received Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon in northern New Mexico at a roadside pullout along U.S. Route 64 with a view looking to the northwest. What I wanted to capture with this image was setting was a look across a grassy meadow as it went down a hillside and then across two more distant ridges and peaks of the Tusas Mountains with the Brazos Cliffs, more or less in the image center. I loved the idea of just listening and watching the simple beauty to my front that day. The rest was just pulling back on the focal length to bring out a wide-angle feel for the image capture and then angling my Nikon SLR camera to capture a sweeping view to my front.
