Tudor Week 2022 Day 5: Most Underrated Tudor: Queen Jane Seymour

Day 7 -  Sunday, 7th of August: Favourite Tudor Historian.
Tumblr media
Diarmaid MacCulloch is the author of biographies of Thomases Cranmer and Cromwell. He also wrote a colossal history of Christianity that has an excellent chapter on the Reformation. According to him, the key to understanding Cromwell is “his love for Cardinal Wolsey and his hatred of Anne Boleyn”. His writing style features a subtle sense of humour.
He’s a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the British Academy and an actual knight. He was knighted for his services to history. He has won: James Tait Black PrizeNational Book Critics Circle AwardBritish Academy Book PrizeWolfson History PrizeHessell-Tiltman PrizeCundill Prize
He is gay and believes that’s helped him be a better historian. He was taught by big daddy Geoffrey Elton and he in turn taught Reformation historian Alec Ryrie.
Also his birthday is Halloween. He once tried to write historical fiction, but only for an hour, and he found it “toe curlingly embarassing and resolved never to do it again.”
I desperately want to read what he wrote but he has probably deleted it.
He also has a beautiful speaking voice and if he wasn’t a historian, he would make an absolute killing narrating audiobooks.
He is BFFs with Hilary Mantel, but freely admits that he hasn’t finished A Place of Greater Safety on the grounds that everyone in the book is unlikeable. He likes reading Scandi noir and he wears a lot of hats. He also likes running and he owns a swanky grand piano that he plays.
He is an ordained deacon in the Church of England but fell out with them in the 80s on the issue of gay rights, thus they threw away a pearl greater than all their tribe. He thinks of himself as “a candid friend of Christianity.”
According to Debretts, I should call him Prof Sir, but MacCulloch said he didn’t want to be addressed like that as clergy with knighthoods only get to called Sir/Dame if they were knighted pre-ordination.

Day 4: Supernatural
Ship: Arthur Kirkland x Elizabeth I (reincarnated) x Alfred F. Jones
Cowritten with: @the-engdyssey
Summary: Once, the stories of mermaids loving human sailors had been as bountiful as the fish in the sea. She had grown up listening to the tales from older mermaids of the handsome human youths who dared traverse raging seas for one purpose or another. War, trade, new territory, spoils, splendor, and greed.
But never love. Or it seemed.

The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino
A young single mother has an unwelcome visitor at her apartment one night - her abusive ex-husband. A fight breaks out, and she kills the bastard, and then her very introverted, very genius, quite ugly neighbor helps her dispose of the body and establish alibis for her and her daughter, and helps them while the police keep coming back and asking them questions. Luckily for the detective trying to solve the case, he also has a personal connection with a genius.
Bravo, Higashino. I did not even expect a twist to be coming, and did not see that twist in particular, in even the slightest way. Bravo. And thank you to whatever random internet recommendation I found this book on! Twitter or some list - I have no idea!

Danny Robins said: ‘I'm really looking forward to seeing how Dublin audiences respond to 2:22 this summer. The tour continues to be a great success and I can't think of a better place to round off the journey in 2024 than here with a brand new cast to be announced soon!'
What do you believe? And do you dare discover the truth?
“THERE’S SOMETHING IN OUR HOUSE. I HEAR IT EVERY NIGHT, AT THE SAME TIME"
Jenny believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben. Can the dead really walk again? Belief and scepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening, and that something is getting closer, so they’re going to stay up... until 2:22... and then they’ll know.
2:22 - A Ghost Story features set design by Anna Fleischle, costume design by Cindy Lin, lighting design by Lucy Carter, sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph Sound and illusions by Chris Fisher. Casting by Matilda James.
2:22 - A Ghost Story is produced by Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons for Runaway Entertainment, Isobel David and Kater Gordon.  [source]

The Eccentric Recluse
Here is the link to this week's brand new video!!
https://youtu.be/PTG8pAIt65Q
Let's start this one out by taking a look at some exterior photos taken during the overgrown summer months!!
Born in 1951 and of Polish descent, Jeff really enjoyed working with his hands, he enjoyed automotive repair, woodworking and metal work. This is evidenced most clearly in this home that we are exploring today.  You can see some of the work he has done both inside and outside of the home.  There are little details everywhere, from the woodwork, to the decorative angels, the metal work on the fireplace to the railings outside the home that have little metal flowers inside.  Built in the Tudor style with a very strong medieval vibe to it, I suspect that he may have built the entire home himself or at least added onto the home significantly over the years while he was living there. The details in this home did not stop at the visible and decorative, he also created some things for function as well.  Throughout the home, almost every light fixture was on a motion sensor.  There were also those cheap dollar store battery operated lights stuck to the walls in random places, some of which were still working during the explore!  He had built large speakers into the walls and the ceiling throughout the living room, I didn't even notice these during the initial video explore, but they were everywhere.  Many of the windows also had bars over them, much like the type you would see on city homes in a bad area.
The son of a mechanical engineer who worked for Air Canada, he was a draftsman by trade and it is no surprise to see the world that he created and surrounded himself with.  Jeff was never married and he apparently, according to neighbours, passed away in this very home in 2015.  He was only 64 years old.
The house was an absolute pleasure to explore but at the same time with the bars over the windows and the dim and dyeing dollar store lights turning on and off, it left me feeling a bit uneasy, almost like Jeff may return at any moment.  Or maybe that he was still somehow watching over the house.
In 2021 the house and property were sold at auction to cover the property taxes owed.  Since then, in late 2022, the new owners have cleared away a lot of the overgrowth, the cars are gone and it looks as though they have gutted the inside.  Only time will tell if this house is completely demolished or if the new owners decide to save it!

Photo of Grace Jones, Drury Lane Theatre, London, England, 10th October 1981 by David Corio

The haters of Madonna are saying No Band on stage is just Karioke
I have posted many times the Malcolm McClaren Keynote " Karaoke Culture "
Having seen Grace Jones in 1981 and the songs of her Nightclubbing album were all in my Club for Heroes DJ Sets. Chris Blackwell came in many times asking me what is this song ?
"Private Lives" by "The Pretenders" "Nightclubbing" By Iggy Pop "Warm Leatherette" by The Normal and his own Roxy Music Love is the drug 12" were all big tracks. Seeing Grace jones performance her clothes her stage show and the stage set of 26 TV's . TV's later I bought them all for the stage set of The Playground Club with a Video Mixer Bruno. We showed Videos and mixed the audio like they were records. Madonna presented a stage show and Like Grace Jones the performance and the performers was not about a band it was about Madonna. Who wrote all her music and who . Grace Jones was before Madonna and before Lady Gaga as a performer and she continued the concept that the Drag Queens used lip sync to old songs that I saw at ROMY HAAG club in Berlin . A floor show was not about who could sing , it was about the whole show , costumes and dancers lights and costumes. Madonna carried that on with her own music in sound and vision.
I was there it was amazing , Inspirational and this review By Paul Morley mates with Trevor Horn of her Hampton Court 2022 says " ‘pop music has been tattooed with Jones’s influence for 45 years.’"

Tudor Week 2022 | Day 3  —   Most underrated Tudor Media.
— WOLF HALL TV series, based on the novels
WOLF HALL & BRING UP THE BODIES by Hilary Mantel
" He finds himself praying: this child, his half-formed heart now beating against the stone floor, let him be sanctified by this moment, and let him be like his father’s father, like his Tudor uncles; let him be hard, alert, watchful of opportunity, wringing use from the smallest turn of fortune. If Henry lives twenty years, Henry who is Wolsey’s creation, and then leaves this child to succeed him, I can build my own prince: to the glorification of God and the commonwealth of England. Because I will not be too old. {…} And I shall not be like Henry Wyatt and say, now I am retiring from affairs. Because what is there, but affairs? "
— Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall
