right, BWBA content warning and all that, but Steph Southgate, one of the artists, has some storyboards on ArtStation:
"Free and Easy"
"Where's Thomas?"
"Rescue" sequence (Thomas and Ace racing, Thomas' derailment and rescue)
it's just a really cool insight into the making of this or maybe any CGI movie

Okay OKAY IM A BIT LATE (As in days late) SO UH RIGHT SO SORRY ABOUT THAT-
BUT HAVE THIS I FINALLY FINISHED IT
Happy Birthday Big Green! :]
For context: it basically is like "Oh this is what happened during his birthday!"
To explain further, the first scene is the public celebration of his birthday (being that I envisioned it happening in a museum), the second scene is yknow.. Contiplating life. WHILE WHILE- The third scene is just him celebrating his birthday with Truro, just the two of them :D (They spent the rest of the night hanging out with eachother that's why it's near sunrise)

to make the humans interact with the humanoids on Thomas and the magic railroad. they originally wanted the real humanoids to cast themselves but with bad acting + busyness+ expensive to keep and maintain .they made 3 humanoid costumes a James muppet, diesel 10, and Thomas. they have stilts so they would reach the humanoids height but for larger engines like diesel 10, they use camera perspective to make them seem larger. so they don't have to put too much detail on the costumes they put them in darker places so they'll look more real, detailed and finished. after the movie, James brought his puppet and put it into storage such as for lady and Thomas,.. just trashed for d10.

An intriguing new discovery was made during a thorough exploration through old and abandoned projects made by the now defunct Clearwater Features, the company behind the classic "Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends" series.
What could be recovered so far were screenshots of what seem to be an old version of the first ever TTTE episode, "Thomas & Gordon".
Tumblr media
The episode itself plays out just like the one that aired back in the 80s, but instead of being done with model renditions of the characters and backgrounds, the entire episode animation style is full-on cel animation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entire episode was likely an animation style that Britt Allcroft and the team considered before ultimately sticking to models.
(This ain't real btw, just in case anyone may think it is. I just thought I'd try doing redraws of scenes from TTTE with a more 80s cartoon style.)

"Would you mind leaving me out tonight, Engineer? I'd like to see the stars."
Just a very rushed drawing I did of an oc I haven't even officially introduced yet, oops! Well, meet Davenport! I've been writing a story behind the scenes for a bit now. Started off as just a silly idea but like most of my silly ideas I get a little carried away.
He's going to get an official ref sheet along with Schatzi, if you remember him! (who I am working on as we speak!)
I wont say too much because I would like to leave the story a mystery, and I'll put most of his details on his ref. However, I would like to point out as a little teaser that he was built in late 1918. This will be a very important factor as you'll see later on. The story will have a lot to do with World War One and its legacy. I want to explore a relatively untouched side to the TTTE universe.
I will throw in two more things just for fun. Yes, he is a Davenport Trench Locomotive named... Davenport. His real "name" if you could call it that is 4417. Because of [redacted] he takes the initiative and decides to give himself a name, something which is unheard of for engines of war. Heavily inspired by Donald and Douglas naming themselves and forsaking their old numbers. Yea, this story is going to be a lot of fun.

Content warning for engine abuse
So a while back I had an idea for a ttte story where there was this Railway on the Main Land that requests to loan an engine from Sodor for a time. I haven’t decided which engine it would be, but it was one that the Fat Controller believed to have felt underappreciated at the time - for now let’s just call them “X”.
Everyone who worked on this railway was incredibly kind and made X feel more than at home. Oddly enough, all the other engines working on there were faceless, which did concern X at first, but it also meant there was more of an excited buzz whenever X was in the human worker’s presence. By the time the loan period came to an end, the engine was sad to go back, having genuinely enjoyed working for them.
That is until several months later when that very same railway requests to loan another engine. The moment X catches wind of this, they practically beg the Fat Controller to let them be the one to go again, claiming that they already know the ins and outs of working there. Once again, the workers were very welcoming, overjoyed to see X return. And again when the time came for X to return home they were saddened at the thought of leaving. However, on X’s last day there, the controller of this railway makes a proposition.
He wanted to purchase X from the North Western Railway.
Obviously it was a big decision to make, Sodor had been their home for many, many years. He gave X some time to think it over. When X did return home, life on the North Western just didn’t seem as fulfilling as before. People weren’t as excited to see them as they were on the other railway. Whatever work X did in the yard wasn’t enough either, the human workers there showing almost no appreciation for X’s help. And an argument with fellow engines at the sheds during the night sealed the deal for X. Papers were signed, money was handed over, and a send off was arranged for the departing engine, although it was bittersweet given the aforementioned argument was still fresh in everyone’s mind.
Off this engine went to the Main Land, excited to turn over a new leaf. Upon X’s arrival at their new railway, something immediately seemed off, the controller barely acknowledged their presence and promptly put X to work. The warm, friendly human workers suddenly seemed cold and uncaring, snapping at X for the smallest mistake. All except for the engine’s new driver who preferred to silently get on with their work and turning a blind eye to the insults his colleagues sent his engine’s way.
It took about 4 days before X had had enough and refused to work any longer and when the controller arrived on the scene, X threatened to return to their old railway if things didn’t change. The controller just laughed and waved the paperwork that proved X belonged to him in their face. Even if X tried to return, the controller had legal ownership of them. He gave X an hour to decide if they were going to continue working or continue striking, the latter of which they would be severely punished for.
X was too stubborn.
60 minutes passed and the controller returned. Much to the engine’s confusion, the human clambered up into their cab. With a flip of the engine’s override, the man took full control of X and drove them both to the railway’s workshop. X began to panic, wondering if this was it. Why did they ever choose to leave Sodor? A couple of compliments and special treatment, was that really all it took for them to leave their old life behind? Sure things on Sodor weren’t always peachy, but they had friends, a job they loved, a caring driver and a controller who would absolutely not stand for any of this.
X’s worry lessened at the sight of paint cans being retrieved. A new livery? Surely that alone couldn’t have been the “sever punishment”. X was correct, as its eyes landed on something large and made of steel being lifted by a crane. A false smokebox, as the controller happily provided. If X did not want to comply with free will, then they will be treated as a faceless engine and made to look the part with the dummy smokebox completely engulfing the engine’s face. X begged and pleaded, saying that they would be good, they would comply. But it was too late, their voice unable to penetrate their new prison.
X didn’t see the sun again for a very long time.
-
Close to a year later Henry was out pulling the Kipper when something collided with the back of his train. A couple trucks were damaged but Henry and his driver were otherwise unarmed. His driver and guard went to inspect the situation. There shouldn't have been any other trains on this line at that time.
And yet, there on its side lay a faceless engine.

“The three engines are now great friends...”
I really thought I’d just be filling this post with ironic images of of Edward, Gordon, and Henry being dicks to each other Gordon and Henry being dicks to each other and to Edward.
But actually, the more I rewatch, the more I’m impressed and touched by the subtle little signs that this was true, and not just a pat convenient way to end the first book.
RS/TTTE is the complete opposite of a sitcom where Status Quo is God. In this universe, Change is God, and these stories have since spanned almost a hundred years since the original story about the “Three Railway Engines.”
I feel like it’s super realistic that this honeymoon phase of the next friendship passed in the blink of an eye, practically behind the scenes.
But it’s also really endearing how you can still see this original trio manifesting once and again throughout all the railway expansions and multiplying cast? There’s plenty of moments that show a sort of normal, not toxic, level of ribbing/teasing, and lots of little notes of familiarity and warmth?
Like, yes, they’re all busy and your lives have changed a lot, but I absolutely believe they’ve known each other forever and ever.

About:
Hello hello, new followers and old! Welcome to the Little Western!
A quick intro: My name is Ray (any pronouns!), I've been a fan of Thomas for over 20 years but only recently got back into it as an adult. This blog is open for (appropriate) questions and discussion at all times, do not hesitate to hit me up. I love talkin' about these silly little engines! :^)
Tag List:
#human!au: switchers - Art from my ttte human AU, Switchers. All of my humanized designs are posted to my main blog but reblogged here for archival purposes! Any asks about the human characters will go under this tag as well.
#transmissions from the little western - All my original posts, both serious discussions and silly memes.
#engines in sidings - A collection of standalone ttte short stories by both @greatwesternway and myself posted on ao3. Please check them out, we're both extremely proud of them!
#little westssays - Get it, like... Little Western Essays? Whatever. All my essay posts. Typically character analysis, metatextual breakdowns, or commentaries on episode production as those are the topics I find most interesting.
#the future is still silver and black - Original work based on two real-life engines: CB&Q 9911-A, "Silver Pilot" and the Pioneer Zephyr. TFiSSaB is a history of these engines told through the format of them exchanging letters. I occasionally also draw humanized versions of these characters, but that's more for fun than anything. You can read the whole thing here!
#tfissab behind the scenes - Stuff that's not directly related to The Future is Still Silver and Black but which still falls under the umbrella such as research notes, photos from our trips to the museums, or other such miscellany. Basically anything we can't put on the website directly goes here!
Posts are generally tagged by fandom and type, characters are always tagged with just their names. Except for Gordon. Don't ask.
(Please don't tag me in tag memes or post chains on this blog, I'm not interested and I won't respond, sorry!)

Welcome To The Railroading Tales From Somewhereica Official Blog!
After taking a poll on my other American railroad centric account (@american-railroading) it seems there was some interest in my silly oc project so here we go! Come in and stay a while, I’ve got nothing but time and passion to talk about and show off things from this series! So without further ado…
Welcome to Somewhereica! The 51st state in the USA. It’s a bit odd as a lot of people would describe it as chaotic and sporadic. But the residents are friendly and there’s plenty of train watching so why not stick around? Here we’ll be talking about some of the more behind the scenes and work in progress parts of the series, that being drawing, writing, and just chatting about characters and engines they’re based on! Getting to know the characters is key to getting invested or understanding a series, SO DON’T BE ARAID TO SEND ASKS EVER I LOVE TALKING ABOUT THIS SERIES!!!
Refer to me as Jak/Jac/Jack, whichever you prefer, doesn’t matter to me! Pronouns also don’t matter much to me! I’m sure if you’re asking about the series I’m sure I’ll know you’re talking to me anyway! I just figured I ought to give y’all a name to go with the blog.
Tumblr media
What Is RRTFS Exactly?
The best way to describe it is sorta like Thomas The Tank Engine. The engines are alive and have faces, and depending on the engine, how experienced they are, and all kinds of factors they can run themselves to some extent. BUT, unlike TTTE, this series is not aimed at little kids. With swearing, blood, character deaths, and very descriptive moments, I’ll be covering some of the less fortunate side of railroading and how bad wrecks and accidents could really be. But, I’ll also be writing more silly and nonsensical stories as well as the realistic ones. After all, this series started off silly so might as well stick to those roots even when some of the shorts take a darker turn! So following the engines will be both harrowing and funny! (Hopefully at least, I’m not a professional writer and I’m always willing to take suggestions!
Where Can I Find The Stories?
As of now, I haven’t posted the links. They’re on a Google Doc that I have given access to anyone who has the link (viewer/commenter only, no edits for obvious reasons). That document goes with three others, the informational document which I wrote down character personalities, short ideas, and the general timeline for the series (it is also accessible to anyone who has the link), the spreadsheet which I use just when I need more technical information/need to know fast what engines I’ve added for what railroad (also public), and the super secret document where me and my co-writer (he’s not on Tumblr sadly) actually write up the shorts, which then get copy and pasted to the actual short document (this one is NOT public, only me and him have it). So for now, they’re just stories on a screen (I can and will post the links when/if someone asks, I’m just too nervous too right away). Me and my co-writer, who has Trainz have talked about animating at least some of the shorts at some point in time, which will not happen for a LONG time, as he only has so many models of some of the characters, some aren’t the best quality, some haven’t and likely won’t be made without special commissions, and none have faces. If this ever changes I WILL SAY SO, as he’s going to rusty and learn how to make his own models so they all match and we can fill in the gaps!
Is There Anywhere Else To Discuss This?
Yes! Technically there is! I have made a discord server for the series! As of now, only me and my co-writer are in it. I will not be posting the link publicly for the time being. I want to try and ease into moderating a server and I don’t want a bunch of people I don’t know entering it right away! BUT, it is open! If anyone wants to join please DM me about wanting the invite link and I shall supply! After getting comfortable talking to you of course, I want to make sure I don’t let anyone with ill intentions into the server, and I don’t want to be nervous in my own server! There’s also asks! Please send asks here! I love talking about the series and a question you have that I find difficult may just lead to more worldbuilding and fleshing things out! So it’s always appreciated!
Am I Allowed To Make Fanart/Fanfics Of The Series?
Absolutely! Just please credit me as the original creator of the characters and any stories/material you use from the series! I’d love to see fanart and read stories you guys come up with! Just try to be respectful with it and don’t do anything too bad with them! I’d rather not have their faces associated with something bad, but still, by all means go right ahead and come up with trauma inducing stories and edgy art or whatever you have in mind for them! Just tag me if it’s art or when you post about posting a story somewhere (AO3, Wattpad, etc) let me know! I’d love to read it! And who knows, I may take inspiration from you and a similar story could become canon! ;)
On a side note, you’re also allowed to suggest thing for the series! Characters, locations, stories, anything! It may not be used, but ideas are always appreciated and it’s always nice to get and outside perspective on things! So don’t be shy to speak up about something you’d like o see used or done at some point! Also don’t be scared to reference actual events that have happened on railways all around the world, as I’m sure I could use some elements of it in a story set in Somewhereica!
Tumblr media
If any of the above questions I already answered didn’t answer your question please let me know! I will answer them, although maybe not right away! Please be patient, there’s only one of me and who knows how many of you!
In the meantime, these are the other blogs I run just in case you’d like to check the them out!
@kindashywriter (although my main blog, I’m behind on posting art so be wary of that, might try to catch up soon!)
@american-railroading (my other sideblog I posted the original poll to! Mostly just pictures but there may be rants and videos and what not!)
Have fun! And don’t be shy to talk to me and send asks! Stick around as long as you like! I hope you enjoy this series as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it!

I'd love to see the process commentary for the James post!! :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OHGOD THE HORROR THEY SCRAPPED JAMES so I started off by testing out some of my materials (here are prismacolor markers, colored pencils, a crappy crayola marker, and 2 of my sparkly gel pens) unlike with digital I cant erase marker so I gotta do a bunch of drafting for detailed traditional pieces
my black prismacolor is drying out, which is how I got his smokebox to look shiny. I started by pressing hard and then brushing it off lightly and in a curved shape to give the smokebox some dimension
hilariously I dont have a red prismacolor. james’ red is made by putting orange over fuschia- which you can see poking through here
I do have two different shades of yellow for his brass though! yay
there was a very first attempt at sketching out james but it is terrifying so I am going to spare you these instead . I like drawing the characters as a mix between how theyre drawn in the show/books and their IRL basis, and I had like 4 different references for james and they were all in different perspectives so I had many opportunities to accidentally make the perspective super wonky… which is easy to do for James because hes more spindly than Gordon or Thomas
as you can see I ragequit drawing james’ tender and put it in the corner instead. tenders are hard.
behind all my drawings (especially the ones that start out on paper) there is. so much drafting and process and all that shit and I’m glad you like to hear me talk about it because I can never shut up XD I hope there’s some techniques in here that people find helpful

Fic Writer Interview
- nobody tagged me, but I wanted to do this anyway so-
Name(s): Ed
Fandom(s): Current: Transformers, Brave Police J-Decker (coming soon). In the past, possibly again in the future: Starlight Express, LazyTown, Steam Powered Giraffe, Knight Rider, Ghost Rider, Thomas the Tank Engine
Where you post: Archive of our Own
Most popular one-shot (by kudos): That would be Sweaters , with 345 kudos. It was the second of my Lazytown Christmas-specials, which I wrote in one go on Christmas Eve.
Most popular multi-chap (also by kudos): Wings at 853 kudos. My "Robbie Rotten but if he had wings" Robbie/Sportacus fic. I might get around to actually finishing the sequel at some point. Was not expecting this one to beat my TF fics!.
Favorite story you've written so far: Hmm. In terms of "this is incredibly self-indulgent and I'm writing it to cater to every single one of my kinks" I'd have to say Drop To Drink. (AKA: the Titty!AU)
IN terms of fics I'm rather proud of sharing with other people, Last of the Wild Cabooses. . I put a lot of research into railroad history to write this fic, and then did a shit-ton of worldbuilding on top of that.
Fics you were nervous to post: High Tide . My first time ever posting an mpreg fic publicly. I was terrified of the reaction I'd get. Fortunately, it was nothing but positive!
On a similar note, I was nervous about getting flames on my Thomas the Tank Engine ship fics (especially when I wrote TTTE mpreg) but that never materialized. Now, I've stopped giving a shit and will post just about anything.
How do you choose your titles: Gonna be honest, I usually choose song lyrics (eg. Behind Blue Optics, Runner in the Night, Midnight Run, No Days for Knights, Marching Inland). Sometimes it's a reference to something (Drop to Drink, comes from the Knight Rider episode 'Not a Drop To Drink' which has nothing to do with the fic). Sometimes, it's just a phrase that works well. (When the Bomb Drops, A Winglord's Duty)
Do you outline?: Not really. I do tend to daydream/fantasize the entire fic before I actually sit down and write it, though, so I know where the fic is going. I just don't bother to write it down. I spend a lot of time on the bus, or lying in bed, just. Planning out the next scenes for my fics.
Complete: Quite a few, I'm proud to say. All my Thomas the Tank Engine fics (6), my TUGS fics (5), my Knight Rider fics (2) (except for one not posting to Ao3 yet), several Starlight Express fics (5), (3) Lazytown fics, (2) Steam Powered Giraffe fics, and (3) Transformers fics.
In-progress: Too many. . . The Lazytown fics are on hiatus until I feel like finishing them. Might not ever get back to the StEx stuff, we'll see.
In progress that I'm actually working on are my Transformers fics (Pearl of Polyhex, When the Bomb Drops, Drop to Drink, and Behind Blue Optics)
Coming soon: Next up on the list will be a Brave Police J-Decker fic (working title: To Weather the Storm), and another Transformers J/P fic (working title: the Carrying Class AU)
Not started: So many. A basic idea of what's rattling around in my brain
the aforementioned BPJD fic (introducing my OC and bringing back Kagerou), plus a sequel (a mechpreg fic, with Deckerd and Gunmax, because I am extremely predictable)
Brainwashing!AU (dark Tumbler/Prowl, misuse of mnemosurgery, serial killer investigation, and Jazz figuring out that something is very very wrong.)
Prompts? I don't normally write from prompts, since I have enough going on in my head, I don't need the extra stimulus. The only prompt challenge I've done was Thirst Trap April (Bruised Spark) which was, admittedly, a lot of fun. Pearl of Polyhex came out of a series of asks, so I guess that's close?
Upcoming work you're most excited about: I am excited about all my upcoming projects. But, if pressed, I'd say the Carrying Class!AU. There's a lot of scenes in there I'm really excited to write, and some fun worldbuilding too.

ex-engine on the run
So, funny thing about @togetherness23‘s recent post about a TTTE dream she had... I’ve had a TTTE dream this week too. It’s only the second one I ever had, and the wild thing is that it’s from the same period as B’s!—when Edward was out of commission prior to the beginning of the series.
Sweet Lady, What Weird Ways Are These.
Mine was also dark? Not as dark as B’s, mind you! But it was rather unpleasant to experience, and really unsettling when I woke. (In a sort of neat way, though? Like a nice low-key spooky movie. But that will sound weird if you read it, because I don’t think telling you what happens conveys the ‘creepy’ ‘unnatural’ and ‘unhappy/lost/alone/desperate’ emotions that it was all drenched in.)
I wasn’t going to write it up just now... but then I noticed that it’s “Traintober Day 12: Lost,” and... yeah, that really kind fits. Here we go. “Lost.”
My dream actually turned into a humanization thing? I felt the whole “being a steam engine” thing for a while, without much clue or context as to what was going on, but at some point I was sort of... spat out? And then the PoV shifted a bit, and lo and behold, I was no longer an engine but definitely able to observe a confused and shaky humanized Edward kind of freaking out.
Apparently in my dream-world engines just sort of, I dunno, spontaneously manifest a human form when they’ve been out of steam too long? And when you do, you can have a total freak-out and resume your engine form... but you also can elect to go exploring and try to make some sort of new life. Useful, really, if this is because you’ve been abandoned or decommissioned.
It made sense in my subconscious, okay?
Edward was able to go back and forth between forms fairly easily, though, and did so a lot, obviously conflicted. I guess that sticking with the human thing was to sort of give up on his engine life (and maybe my conscious mind was, like... wait, I know how this story ends, he must go back to being an engine). Anyway Edward himself seemed to have thought it was too early to bounce just yet, and that he "ought” to go back to being a good engine and just continue waiting and hoping for his luck to change. But he was never quite sure he’d be able to go back to human if he rejected it too often. And the curiosity was overpowering, so he started “just” sneaking around the sheds and yards... and eventually Vicarstown station...
It wasn’t all that... chronological from there, but I slipped in and out of these adventures for a while. Our boy managed to snag a job as a cleaner of some sort...
... and rode a train to Tidmouth! He was stymied by the lack of money thing, though. Like, he knew he needed a ticket to get on board—and thought himself a pretty smart cookie for remembering—but he had no idea that he would have to give some money in exchange for the ticket, and after a massively socially uncomfortable scene the kind soul behind him just paid for him and brushed off any further contact (it was a shadowy faceless figure, I think my subconscious got lazy there). So Edward took an uncomfortable ride and, irony of ironies, seemed to get terribly motion sick...
... soon totally got rumbled by STH who was like “of COURSE. did you seriously not think I’d know you?” with Edward kind of like ‘... literally thought you’d forgotten I existed, so yeah, basically’ (definitely not language actually used, he kind of... broke, and was speechless, but that was the idea, and I could feel it, and it was painful)...
... oh, wait, I forgot learning how to walk, which appeared to be trés difficult and weirdly like a spider or a tripod sort of deal? in hindsight hilarious but at the time terrifying, not least of all because Edward himself was terrified and like What Are Legs And Whose Idea Were They? These Are Soooo Unstable, MAJOR Design Flaw...
... at one point totally and with great enthusiasm licked coal dust off his fingers, freaking his new colleagues out...
... at another point tried to venture further into Vicarstown, out of sight of any rails or railway edifices, just to see what it was like Beyond, and that didn’t go so well either because it resulted in a panic attack...
... lol, in retrospect, weird though this situation is, I don’t know how he wasn’t rumbled by everyone. these all sound like hilariously obvious tells... anyway...
... totally got jumped and lost his first pay because he was damn oblivious to the most evil-looking thugs on the most evil-looking shadowy corner in the universe...
... and it’s actually odd that it came to that, because Edward was also damn oblivious to the fact that he was being shadowed by one or two other men throughout much of this. (Honestly Edward was just a human baby in the body of a twenty-three-year old. It would have been a scream except I legit always felt he was in danger.) I was left with the distinct impression that these two had been sent by STH, who was really Not On with the idea of Edward roaming around—as in, had explicitly forbade him to do it, but Edward had countered by not-really-truthfully claiming that he was stuck in human form and thus couldn’t disappear altogether?—and I think STH, knowing that Edward wouldn’t stay put, had dispatched these two as minders. Also got the impression that they might have been the crew that Edward eventually winds up with? Maybe at some point they’d reveal themselves and persuade him to return?...
... but overall, I definitely felt like the dream was moving towards better and better integration into human world. And I think some level of my consciousness was trying to resist this. But I kept feeling acutely Edward’s own overpowering sense of ‘I’d like to get back in steam again more than anything, but if that’s not going to pan out, then... I might just go on the run, evade STH altogether, and figure out this human thing. And be heartbroken forever? Not sure about that but might be willing to find out.’
Anyway, woke up before any closure. Of Course.
Now I’m left with Emotional Aesthetic, a surprisingly large amount of detail, and a vague sense that “ability to opt out of engine form at the ‘end of the line’” is a really fruitful headcanon/AU that I absolutely do not have time for.

As someone who loves the behind the scenes aspect of TTTE, I find it rather disheartening that so much BTS stuff has to be kept away from the public, and you can usually only gain access to it if you're "up there" or whatever. Seems very clique-y in my eyes.
