1/13/18 - Darling in the Sigh

Day 5, woot. It seems as though 2 days just disappeared, but that’s fine.

Okay, well onto actual interesting thoughts!

So, today I watched the first episode of Darling in the FranXX. I had been excited (well, not exactly as I wasn’t that excited for any show this season but still) for this show for a while now because this was a collaboration between A-1 Pictures and Studio Trigger. I haven’t watched much stuff from A-1 honestly, but the stuff I have watched has been okay. A-1 Pictures can make really mainstream shit that can become international hits (see: Sword Art Online, Fairy Tale, Shinsekai Yori, Eromanga Sensei) though the main reason they became popular was to the trashy appeal of the source material (excluding Shinsekai Yori, of course). A-1 Pictures the studio itself has an extremely variable quality to it.

Unlike Studio Trigger (which has made a name for itself as a producer of original, shonen-tinged anime that take a lot of western influences such as Kill la KIll, Little Witch Academia, Inferno Cop and (since they are by the same staff) TTGL and Panty and Stocking (which was something you would expect on Adult Swim)), Studio Shaft, who has become known for being really friggin’ artsy (see Madoka Magica, or the Monogatari franchise), and is known for their characteristics of having their characters having really weird necks, and Studio Bones, which is known for really good shonen manga adaptations or shonen style anime (Soul Eater, Fullmetal Alchemist and Brotherhood, Eureka Seven and most recently Boku no Hero Academia).

A-1 Pictures, however, doesn’t really have a consistent quality to it. They aren’t really known to have certain characteristics, as the quality of animation, story, and soundtracks often vary widely from production to production. The projects that A-1 Pictures make seem to have no rhyme or reason to why they were produced. This may not be A-1 Pictures fault, as the shows that they have to produce are decided by a committee that they have barely any control over.

Right before the show aired, however, there was troubling news. Due to some weird miscalculations, the show was moved up, from spring to winter. This was a really bad omen. Anime studios do not just make the entire show and then release it piece by piece (which is legit what I used to think). Rather, they literally make it as they go. If you have watched Shirobako, you might know that its normal for the show to be worked on right to the wire. As such, this move meant that the show might have less than stellar animation.

So I was pleasantly surprised when Darling in the FranXX turned out to be not shit. For one, the animation was actually really nice this episode. They put time and effort to make characters move. For example, in one scene where I guess is the main love interest of the show (I don't know yet), the people talking to each other turn their heads and its animated well. Whereas in some show, the heads would like just slide or whatever, it is plain obvious that someone animated that head turned around.

The story itself is kinda uninspired. In a nutshell, it's what you get when you take the basic plot of Pacific Rim, make everyone anime teenagers, mix in some TTGL style sex metaphors, actually screw that, make the entire show probably some big sex metaphor, and add some interesting worldbuilding tidbits. The characters are generic, but then again that's what I thought when I first watched Bakemonogatari so I feel like I should give them some time to really reveal themselves. Not that it’s bad when characters are generic, as LWA had generic characters but it was a good show overall.

Let’s talk about Kase-san!

If you haven’t heard, the manga series Asagao to Kase-san is getting an anime! ..Kind of. It certainly will be animated, but it’s just a music video, much to my disappointment :(

Buuut, I heard someone on twitter mentioning how the staff wouldn’t exactly work on such a small project? It’s possible, but perhaps it could be a way to gauge interest? And then possibly an actual TV series??

So here’s the staff and some stuff they worked on:

Director: Satou Takuya (Steins;gate, WIXOSS, Ichigo Mashimaro)

Character design+Animation director: Sakai Kyuuta (Steins;gate, Re:Zero, WIXOSS)

Art director: Hirama Yuka (TTGL, Haganai, Sukitte II na yo)

Director of photography: Kuchiba Takeshi (Da Capo, Mayo Chiki)

Color Design: Iwaida You (Oregairu Zoku, Konobi)

Editing: Gotou Masahiro (WIXOSS, Gakusen Toshi Asterisk, Akame ga Kill)

So they’ve basically all worked on lots of TV anime.

Also, they ARE trying to appeal to an overseas audience, which is apparent in their English tweets!

Not to get anyone’s hopes up or anything. But.

So if anyone cares for an anime: BUY THE MANGA, share the MV, follow their twitter, visit the website, ...anything to show you have interest.

For me, Kase-san is one of my favorite yuri manga; it’s super cute, wonderful art, GOOD FACES, not overly dramatic (or dramatic at all?), so this would definitely become a favorite show of mine. It’s the kind of romance I’ve wanted to see in anime :’)
