FAVORITE FANFICS OF 2019
HAPPY NEW YEAR’S EVE & HAPPY 2020 TO YOU ALL.
So this was a fun post I did last year, inspired by the dozens of Favorite Books of 2018 by the booktubers I followed and I thought to myself: why not do a little something something for the fanfics that stood out to me, stuck me with throughout the year.
Last year I read insanely amazing reads, and if you’re interested to see what were my favorite fanfics of 2018, here’s the link: past favs
For this year, I read sooooooo many incredible fanfics that it was hard to narrow it down to just 10. And the funny thing is, a good portion were from the same author, so it was insanely hard picking the top one.
I implore all of you reading and following me to try the tag-and please tag me. Always on the hunt for fanfic recs. I also am curious to hear the favorites from the following people: @kila09, @sebbies, @bookstakeyoutootherworlds, @scarlet47, @fleetofshippyships, @eyelashesandentropy, @tired-luxis, @dreamydrarry, @mothermalfoy, @profoundfelicity & @goldentruth813
Without any further ado, here are my top 10 favorite fanfics for 2019:
1). Soup-pocalypse and The Great Curry Cataclysm by SqaudOfCats/ @norelationtoatticus (drarry)
Summary: Eleven years after the war, Draco Malfoy leads a quiet, boring, and perfectly respectable life, thanks very much. Or, at least he does, until a sudden and very unexpected veela awakening causes him to throw soup all over Harry Potter in the middle of the Ministry cafeteria.
If the summary alone doesn’t get you to immediately click on the link and read, I don’t know what to say. But I can say this. SqaudofCats has become my new drarry favorite author period. I read all of her drarry stories, loved them all, and am hoping she does more.
This story, in one word, was a GEM. A FUCKING GEM. It was so so so good. There were so many good elements: Veela Draco, Dad Harry raising Teddy, Draco learning how to cook, a strang but HILARIOUS courtship involving food that I didn’t realize how much I needed until this story. It was also a perfect blend of fluff with so many cute moments and angst, which thankfully didn’t involve the couple but had to do with Harry’s mental health and PTSD post-war.
I read this story back in May and I still think about it. Have to stop myself from reading because I have so many fanfic tabs. But it is so good. It’s so addicting. Highly recommend.
Honorable mentions from this writer:
*Gift for Draco
*Nearly Lost Things, Carefully Tended
2). Cinderfella by @goldentruth813 (sheith)
Summary: Takashi Shirogane is exactly the kind of man Keith likes; built like a brick house with a smile sweet enough to rot teeth and a heart of gold. Of course he’s also YouTube famous and worlds out of Keith’s league. The closest he can get to his pseudo-celebrity crush is when he watches Shiro’s videos from the safety of his bed. Or so he thinks.
This incredible bean of a human being, this incredible writer is the reason I was pulled into the sheith ship long before I finally got into the show-and then had me drag @kila09 into the incredible maddness that is Shiro and Keith and the crew....and the disappointing season 8 that I am still pissed about. But yes @goldentruth813 is the reason why I got pulled into this ship, and this fanfic is the story that sealed my love for sheith and made them my 3rd favorite ship of all time.
This story is a fun, hilarious modern twist of Cinderella that obviously involves two guys, one is who a popular Youtuber and the other who is a hardcore super fan who meet in the most surprising circumstances and come back together in the most hilarious of ways. With our classic glass slipper being a beloved leather jacket.
It’s so stinking cute. It’s so hilarious. And it’s so weird since, while I do appreciate the fairytale, Cinderella isn’t one of my favorites but I’m a sucker for a good retelling of it. And this was so good.
Honorable mention by this writer:
*Safe Haven
3). Burn the Witch by @lettersbyelise (drarry)
Summary:  When Harry Potter is sent in to investigate Draco Malfoy’s successful potions company, posing as Draco’s bodyguard, he doesn’t know the case will launch a series of events that will change his life — and Draco’s. A story about choices, scars, Chopin piano pieces, and finding all kinds of love in the most unexpected places.
Let’s be honest here. At this point, are we really surprise to see this story here , featured in a favorites/rec list? Are we honestly surprise? At this point, I feel every drarry-shipping reader has read it. Devoured it. And praised it.
This story pretty much took over the drarry community the way Red, White & Royal Blue took over the book world. There wasn’t a day when I didn’t see Burn the Witch featured in a drarry fanfic recs post, saw posts praising it. Fanart of it, edits for it, and several mood-boards. It was THAT STORY. And I am proud to say it was worth THE HYPE.
Because it’s so well-known, I’m not going into too much detail but I can say it involves Daddy Draco and Scorpius who is precious, Harry in an undercover mission, and has one of the BEST post-war, slow-burn to the point of excruciating drarry relationship I’ve read all year. READ IT.
Honorable mention by this writer:
*Draco Malfoy’s Stupendous Seduction Seminar
*Love Me (Four Times)
4). Evitative by Vichan (drarry)
Summary: In the summer before his fifth year at Hogwarts, Harry is drawn to a room in Grimmauld Place. Like the Gryffindor he is, he enters the room without fear. The room is a library, and Harry is surprised to find that he’s eager to learn. Then he gets the bad news: he’s been accidentally expelled from Hogwarts, and he needs to be sorted again. Everyone is confident that he’ll go straight back to Gryffindor, but with what he's been learning, Harry’s not so sure.
Out of all the stories I have in my list, this is the only one that is currently a WIP. I know some are hesitant with WIPs but this one is so worth it. Another hidden jewel found by chance. This story has to be one of the best slytherin-Harry ever and that shows the Slytherin House and the Slytherins in a positive light while still remaining true to their cunning ways.
5). Up We Go by Oh_Hey_Tae (BTS: Taehyung x Jimin x Yoongi)
Summary: “If you’re a witch that works with plants, then why are all of yours dead? That can’t be good for business.”
The room dims again, and Jimin lifts a hand to flip off the ceiling. Taehyung knows he’s sad and that’s why the shop darkens and he shouldn’t find it funny—but he can’t help it. Because this is ridiculous. The good kind of ridiculous. The amazing kind.
(Or: Taehyung has a green thumb, Jimin runs a magical store, and Yoongi can kind of see dead people.)
Oh my goodness, where on earth do I even begin with this one? I am loss for words. It’s been months since I read it and I am still lost for words on how incredible it is. This story reads like a fairytale. Who am I kidding? This is a fairytale. A beautiful fairytale that is of loss, grief, friendship, family, love, and magic. And a beautiful fairytale that features a poly relationship
I was broken at the last word of the last chapter. Broken. Broken and put back together again. This story was so heartbreaking and heartwarming and I couldn’t think of anything else the whole damn week after I finished it. It was that good.
Honorable mention by this writer:
* Tell Me Again
6). Silence by the Night by @parkkate (drarry)
Summary: After a spell goes horribly wrong, Harry has to deal with the loss of his eyesight. It’s such terrible timing, too, because how is he supposed to find out what Malfoy has been up to in the Room of Requirement? It’s not like he can ask the git, not only because it’s Malfoy, but also because the Slytherin has suddenly lost his voice. While they’re both trapped in the hospital wing, however, Harry discovers there’s so much he didn’t know about Malfoy, and it’s highly intriguing, but also a bit alarming. Where did all these confusing feelings come from all of a sudden? And what is Harry going to do about them?
See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil. That is the best way to sum up this story. The themes of it certainly tie with the story. This story....there is a certain chapter and @parkkate knows what I mean if she remembers my reviews that shattered me. That made me sit down with a gasp because the angst just cut through me in a way that no other drarry fanfic had do to me. @parkkate I hope you know what I mean.
Funny thing is about this fanfic is that it took my lazy butt forever to read it, like months after it was done. And mind you, I’ve seen so much praise and incredible fanart for this fanfic as well. So yeah, I was cursing myself for not getting to it sooner. And it was so so so so damn good that I literally said to @parkkate THIS IS CANON. This is canon. This happened 6th year after the bathroom scene and no one can tell otherwise.
7). You only Live Once by @dreaming-fireflies (viktuuri/victuuri)
Summary: It's when the man is soaring in mid-air under the full moon that Victor gets a good look at him: he's Japanese, with black hair slicked back in a styled look, and a lithe body covered in tight, tight, leather under a navy blue coat.
And when the man lands on the ground again, Victor sees the final piece that captures his heart absolutely and thoroughly – a pair of brilliant, golden eyes.
Victuuri supernatural AU in which Victor is a Western demon hunter and Yuuri is a Japanese half-youkai exterminator.A cross-cultural romantic comedy/drama, with Japanese mythology, shounen action, and slice of life elements.
Literally the summary itself said everything you needed to know, everything that should AND MUST intrigue you enough into reading, that I don’t know if I really have anything to add. But I’ll try to add some of my own input.
Like the summary said, this is a Supernatural-au YOI story, infused with Japanese mythology. Two different shows that shouldn’t work together but somehow did, creating such a fantastic read. I loved it. From beginning to end. I even knew first chapter it was going to be an ultimate favorite of mine. This fanfic just reminded me of my great love for Vikor and Yuuri-and my need for a fucking season two. As well as reminded of the glorious prime days of Supernatural, which in my opinion were seasons 4 & 5. There was action, there was angst, there was mutual and insane pining from both sides, and so many incredible moments to put into words. Seriously, what more could you want?
@dreaming-fireflies, you seriously did the damn thing with this story.
Honorable mentions by this writer:
*Entwining Fates
*Zanka
8). your sharp and glorious thorn by @arahir (sheith)
Summary: To end the war they inherited, Keith marries the King he lead an army against.
“You know, we met once,” the king continues, voice closer, and Keith almost turns. They met many times on the field—but then the king clarifies with a single word. “Before.”
Before he was a king. Maybe before he was a general. Keith has traced his rise like the growth of a seed he planted in clay and never expected to see again for how poorly he sowed it. None of this would have been possible without Keith—not the war, not a line soldier's battlefield promotion, not the end of it all, tied up so neatly by all Keith’s best mistakes. Not the killing, either. The king is right about that much, at least.
This is an arranged-marriage AU story, a trope I don’t love too much unless it’s really well done, and had very strong Game of Thrones vibes. And please note when I said Game of Thrones, I mean Game of Thrones back in its incredible prime, not the shitty season 8 we all agree was a nightmare never to be thought of again. But yes, this story was so good. Arranged marriage, enemies-to-lovers, slowburn. Please read.
9). Your Constellation Prize by rosegardenlake aka @whoalookingcooljoker (sheith)
Summary: Akira is Hollywood's biggest celebrity. He sings, he acts, he models, he does it all and he does it perfectly. That's what Shiro thinks at least, but what would he know? He's just a tired office worker whose dreams fell through years ago. ...But when he sees Akira, oh god, when he sees him - Shiro's world fills with light again.
When Shiro lands an interview to be an assistant at Akira's company, he has a hard time believing it's reality. Though Akira's rarely around, meeting everyone is like a dream. Especially meeting Keith, Akira's shy sweet dorky cousin (OR IS HE?!)
I didn’t realize how much I would liked-love in fact-or needed a celebrity-AU until I read this story.  And that’s about all I will say since I feel anything else will probably make things spoilery. But I will this say: these two can be such idiots, but they’re our lovable idiots and they’re so sweet, so soft. Also that this story definitely well-portrayed the dark side of fame.
10). That Old Black Magic by @bixgirl1 (drarry)
Summary: Centuries ago, marriage contracts were the norm — ready-made alliances between families, expected and complied with, without complaint. But norms have a way of changing, and when a long-dormant contract flares to life, Harry has to navigate an unexpected splintering of the path he'd thought would be easy after the war... with Draco Malfoy.
Least but certainly not least: an incredible, incredible drarry story done by the impeccable @bixgirl1.
I know I said that I’m not the biggest fan of the arranged marriage trope since I’ve been let down by so stories that started out promising but disappointed in the end. However, there are a few authors who I can always count on to make this trope into a great story. Such as @beatitudinembty, and also @bixgirl1.
This being is pretty much....I wanna say Sarah J Maas, one of my fav authors, in the drarry community. Everyone knows her. Everyone loves her. Everything she writes always turns into gold, and this latest story by hers was no except. Arranged marriage brings Harry and Draco together in the most infuriating, excruciating, incredibly-done slowburn.
Honorable mentions that I seriously wanted to add to the list but this post is already lengthy. All amazing, all greats reads by various writers y’all should check out:
*Moon-Eyed by @l0vegl0wsinthedark (Veela Draco, werewolf Harry, done by another star in the drarry community
*Expectant by @l0vegl0wsinthedark (drarry mpreg with Veela-Draco & werewolf-Harry)
*Where There is Tea by @bafflinghaze (drarry + bookstore+ tea=goodness)
*The Rules of Matchbreaking @nerdherderette ( drarry: match-maker Draco, oblivious Harry, what more could you want?)
* Come For Me by Frayach (drarry; STEAMY STEAMY smut and disabled rep)
*I Want Your Touch (And I Want Your Love) by @awjiminie (yoonmin with bad boy Jimin, good boy yoongi. What more could you want?)
*Seasons of Love by mucha (BTS; Jimin x Tae x Yoongi; incredibly well-done poly relationship)
Lovely people, that concludes my favorites of 2019. So many fantastic fanfics that I could spend hours gushing over them. To the writers who created these incredible stories. I applaud you. I thank you for creating and sharing these wonderful stories. Anyone interested in doing the tag, please do.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, GUYS.

2017-05-28 “A runner that doesn’t know when to stop.” Kubo Shiori Blog #14 [ENG]
The other day, before work, I went with Reno ‘shopping’ for the first time. (We talked about going with the other member the day before, but this was our first time actually going). While ‘shopping’ I saw a store selling a strap that Hazuki would probably have liked, I couldn’t help but want to give it to her and so I ended up buying it. Unfortunately, I ended up wanting it for my self and in the end me and Reno ended up with matching straps.
Hazuki. I’m sorry. Let’s go shopping together next time Hazuki and you can buy the same one. I want Hazuki to be lively again. (I got a message for Hazuki saying “I’m full of energy!”)
Hello everyone. Thank you for your continuous hard work. I am Nogizaka46’s 3rd generation member, 1st year high school student and 15 year old Kubo Shiori. Pleased to meet you.
Tumblr media
Well then, I know it’s a little bit quick but, thank you so much for the 3rd generation solo live at Hibiya Open Air Concert Hall that was held on 27th of May!!!! This was our first outdoor concert! It was a lot of fun, the spaciousness felt amazing (´・_・`)!
Personally, the feeling of singing out into the open made me extremely, extremely happy. I haven’t written in any of my previous blogs, but I was given a solo part for “Nandome no Aozora ka?” At first, I was scared, and I couldn’t sing properly, but I thought that it would be disappointing if I sung like that for everyone and so I practiced singing it over and over. I sang it so that my feelings would reach everyone. Yesterday I was able to sing it in the most wonderful environment, under a blue sky. “Wow, this sight is one I’ll never forget.” I thought to myself.
Furthermore, one more thing. Momochan. Well done on your successful piano performance (´・_・`)!!!!! It was positively delightful. After the concert I called out to her “What? Well done on a successful piano performance. Thank you so much 〜♡” she said in a cute and very high energy way. Momochan was toooo cute…so adorable…(´・_・`) From the bottom of my heart I think I’m so lucky to have been able to perform on that stage, at that time, with that view and with these members. I’m also overflowing with gratitude for everyone that came and supported us. Thank you very much.
Tumblr media
The time is different, but the scenery changed this much. It was so beautiful that I’m at a loss for words…It was truly a sight to behold. Thank you!!
Next topic is about our album campaign. Starting on the 24th of May for 3 days the 3rd generation members went to different places and we held a mini talk and handshake event. Thank you very much to everyone that came!
May 24th → Nagoya, Denchan’s hometown.
Our group was Reno, Riria and me. We ate Miso katsu, Chicken wing, Hitsumabushi (eel fillets cooked over charcoal with soy flavored sauce, cut in small pieces and served on rice). We devoured all the delicious food! It was the best! It was so much fun!
Tumblr media
I’m the hunter of sleeping faces.. Reno is completely protected. I laughed.
May 25th → Tokyo Akishima city
It was the same members as Nagoya. This time the event was outside! It was fairly hype! Thank you for coming even though it was raining slightly. (´・_・`) Because it was an outdoor event it was probably cold wasn’t it… Please make sure to not catch a cold (´・_・`)
May 26th → Niigata, first time in Niigata!!
This time I was with Renka and Reno! Thank you so much for coming out even in the pouring rain. This is only for the fans that were able to come out but the three of us sang “Nandome no Aozora ka?” in harmony. Acapella. After that, for only a second, the skies cleared up. Please everyone don’t catch a cold. Thank you so much. Ah, the Tare Katsu was delicious…
And just like that I was able to enjoy going to various places (´・_・`) Thank you very much everyone. Doing three days of handshakes in a row was fun.
There were a lot of people that said “This is my first handshake event!” Hearing this made me think that “I’m so happy that there are people that came to see me even at event like this. It’d be great if I could do it again.”
By the way, for this campaign we were split into groups of 3 people, a total of 3 groups, with each group going to a different prefecture. Renka, Momoppi and Minamin went to my home prefecture, Miyagi. That told me about all the delicious food they ate. I wonder if any of my friends back home went to see them?? But I don’t know.
Oh speaking of which, I’m going to do a short little hoooooometalk (Hometown talk)
When I was in my third year of middle school the schedule for our class trip overlapped with the Tohoku Under Live performance in Miyagi. (´・_・`) I was so shocked I was on the verge of tears… I was truly thinking about skipping the class trip. I talked it over with 5 or 6 other people in my class, but since I didn’t want to cause trouble for anyone I obeyed and went on our class trip to Tokyo. (It was enjoyable), but even still Kubo Shiori isn’t one to give up.
No matter what I wanted to go, and so I timidly asked my trustworthy friend “If you want…Do you want to go by train to Yamagata…with me?” And just like I though they said “sure.” I was extremely lucky, but also unlucky because my seat was 2 rows from the back.” I never would have thought that that day would be the day that my life would change.
The first concert of my life and also the first time seeing Nogizaka46. Somehow there’s not a single feeling I have that can describe it, excitement, happiness, enjoyment, delight…regardless of words for some reason watching them warmed my heart. I would say secretly to myself that “I think I want to be a part of Nogizaka46”
Honestly, if at the time my friend had said that they wouldn’t go I probably wouldn’t have gone either… Thinking about it now, the only reason I’m here now is because they were there.
In addition, the other reason I’m here now is all due to a lot of coincidences. The fact that Nogizaka 46 came to Tohoku, that our class trip overlapped with the Miyagi concert, that I was able to get tickets, that I was in the second to last row, and that the 3rd generation seminar was right after that. Hmm… It’s pretty deep. It’s precisely for this reason that I’m doing the most I can for the present. I want to enjoy the time that I have now. Thank you for the circumstances that I have right now.
The connection between each individual is tied with the changing of another’s fate. I want to be an inspiration on the life of another. I wonder what I’ll leave behind in your lives?
The Tohoku concert changed my life. My first time hearing the song “Futougou” live will be added to the first press limited edition release version of our new album “Umarete Kara Hajimete Mita Yume” on the concert selection DVD. This is the moment where my life changed. Everyone please make sure to check it out〜There are also a lot of other songs that have been added.
That being said, our new album is now on sale. I’m grateful that the two 3rd generation songs that we recorded are also going to be on that album. The first is 「Sanbanme no Kaze」It’s our first song and it’s a song that will cheer you up. The second song is 「Omoide First」I a song that is perfect for summer, it’s both cute and refreshing song. Both songs have good points and are both important and loveable songs to me. 「Umarete Kara Hajimete Mita Yume」Definitely check it out. Thank you very much.
I still have a lot to talk about…will you let me talk about it(´・_・`)?I’m sorry.
Welll then!
Thank you so much for the handshake event in Kyoto today!! It’s my first time in Kyoto, it’s an amazing place.
During my 3rd slot I wore…a summer blue knit top and short pants with a ponytail.
During my 4th slot I wore… a white short sleeve blouse with navy blue gaucho pants and French braided hair.
I wore the same clothes in the 4th and 5th slot, the only difference is had a tied up French braid.
Anyways the handshake event went something like that. There were a lot of topics that were talked about but the ones probably talked about the most were… “3rd generation solo concert, the outdoor concert, and NOGIBINGO???” Hearing everyone’s honest feelings the day after the concert made me happy! Another thing I feel I heard a lot was “You should do face yoga!” I did it the best I could〜 I’m excited to see everyone again in Kyoto during our album’s individual handshake event. Thank you so much to everyone that came.
For the first time in a while, it’s a Q&A session!
·         What products do you use in your skin care routine?
I use Curél’s sensitive skin products. When the season’s change, my skin becomes sensitive and as a result I try my best to not change any of my beauty products (´・_・`) However, over the summer I’ve been investigating a more refreshing toner than the one I have now so that I feel less sticky. I’d be glad to talk about it during the handshake meetings as well!
·         Are you someone that bring the sun or brings the rain?
When I was in elementary school, whenever we went on an excursion or whenever there was an event there would be clear skies. However, recently when we did the mini talk in Niigata, I started to doubt my powers a little.
·         What’s a reoccurring problem for you?
Hmmm…….probably waking up with a leg cramp.
·         What dialect do you often use?
This right here. Where I was raised there wasn’t really any dialectal variation. That’s why when people come my handshake and plead to me asking “Say something in your dialect” I can’t say anything….I’m sorry (´・_・`) But the other day, after I said to Minamin “ah, it ain’t pleasant!” she looked confused(´・_・`)!
I know it’s short, but I’m going to end the Q&A here for today!
 I want arm muscles〜.(´・_・`)
Even though I did cheerleading and badminton most of my arm muscles have disappeared(´・_・`)
Must...Train... .(´・_・`)
Tumblr media
Ayatii. I call her Ayanochan. I can say with confidence that she’s a big sister and that I love her. She’s elegant, nice and she always gives me food. She also listens to my serious talks. She always calls me “Tempestii chan” Ayachan is lovely. As a person I respect her. Even though I just saw her I miss her already.
(TL Note: The Japanese translation of ‘Tempestii chan’ is ‘あらしーちゃん’ which is a probably a mix of  嵐 ‘storm’ and しーちゃん ‘Shiichan’ one of Kubo’s nicknames.)
Oh yeah, that’s right. Thank you for the comments on the previous blog about your impressions on the outdoor concert. I also received impressions about the solo live along with other comments that filled me happiness, such as “I wanted to go” or “you gave me energy.” Thank you for truly supporting me. Every time I read each and every word that everyone has put their feelings into I think “wow, I’m such a lucky person.” Thank you. Thank you.
 I’m hungry!!!
Tumblr media
“Ahh” munch. “Derichious” are what these pictures represent.
The other day when I went to all you can eat, during that time my hands were consonantly moving for an hour and a half, afterwards I told the other members, “I don’t think I can eat another bite.” Food is the best.
 [Next time]
YodaKubo’s adventures will be released all at once!! Coming soon! Don’t miss it.
Tomorrow’s blog is Tamamiiiii’s 〜 I’m going to climb Sakaguchi slope. You want to climb it with her sometimes, don’t you? No, no, all the time (´・_・`) lol
(TL Note: Sakaguchi slope is a pun on Tamami’s name which has ‘saka’ in it. Although spelled differently it’s pronunciation is the same as the ‘saka’ used in the kanji used for the ‘zaka’ in Nogizaka)
For me, my next blog update will be on June 9th.
I’ll write again soon.
 Kubo Shiori
Something I realized recently. A human life, while we are alive, seems to have different chances swirling all around us, but I think “I wonder when I will get those chances” and “I wonder if I haven’t noticed those chances.” There will be many times where you will be confronted with the thought “Of course this is an opportunity,” but of course opportunities come and go without you know anything about them…
This is what I realized recently. That’s why I don’t want to waste even a minute or a second, why I can’t waste it. Even though there may be fears I can’t yet see, it’s especially for that reason that I see these moments as opportunities. Because I can’t see what lies in wait, I need to pierce through them with all my strength. Even within that, up till now there are probably an uncountable number of opportunities I’ve let slip by and as a result I need to make up for them, all of them. NO, I’ll will make up for them and more.

14 Techniques for Strengthening Your Brand at Live Events
Share your favorite technique for representing and strengthening your brand at in-person events.
These answers are provided by Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only organization comprised of the world’s most promising young entrepreneurs. YEC has also launched BusinessCollective, a free virtual mentorship program that helps millions of entrepreneurs start and grow businesses.
1. Start a Live Stream
Whenever we’re at events, we tend to use Facebook Live and film our experience at the event while also interviewing attendees. We even created our own hashtag and show called #TSEtalks. This gives our audience the first look at how we grow our connections and the excitement of the world we live in. – Kenny Nguyen, Big Fish Presentations
2. Play a Theme Song
Before every video or live presentation, I play a short, up-tempo song that I’ve licensed for use in my events. This is a great way to build up hype before a big announcement or presentation. In addition to increasing the energy of a crowd, this method reinforces the audience’s memory of my brand through a memetic effect. Whenever they hear that song, they’ll think of my brand. – Bryce Welker, CPA Exam Guy
3. Say Hi First
I try to say “hi” first. I’m usually the one to cross the room to introduce myself to others, which allows people to see I’m open, confident and collaborative. My business brands are about being warm and trustworthy. Especially with MORE, being open and authentic needs to shine through. – Amber Anderson, MORE
4. Make a Remarkable Impression
There are three key things you can do to be remembered at in-person events: Simplify your name, build authentic rapport and have your own unique dress style. Abbreviate or change your name if it’s hard to pronounce, make your wardrobe unique and consistent and know who you want to connect with. Once these are done, get clear on what you value and what you can offer so people remember you. – Dan San, Meural
5. Ask the Right Questions.
If I meet people at a live event, whether it’s a conference, seminar or any type of networking event, I understand that I can’t help everyone. That’s why I go out of my way to ask pointed questions about what the person needs. I ask about their type of business, challenges finding new customers and goals. This information helps me qualify potential customers and not waste their time. – Kalin Kassabov, ProTexting
6. Focus on Your Story
People tend to relate to stories way better than blatant self-promotion. In-person events give you the perfect opportunity to present the story of how you got to where you are. Start by defining the story you want to tell, make sure it remains consistent, and do away with any fluff. Keep your story factual, failing which it can actually work in deteriorating your brand’s image. – Derek Robinson, Top Notch Dezigns
7. Be Able to Explain What You Do and Your Vision Powerfully
Most entrepreneurs are not very good at communicating the value and impact of their work and will default to generic industry terms to describe what they do. You should be able to explain your vision/what you do so powerfully that it sparks genuine interest and fascination in most of the people you meet. When you can do that well, each conversation is worth its weight in gold. – Justin Faerman, Conscious Lifestyle Magazine
8. Help Others Build Their Brand
My key strategy at events is to help others build their future. If I leave someone better than they were before, that is indirectly impacting my brand in a positive way. If you want to elevate your brand and take it to new heights, then you must invest in others because they are going to be your following and your super-fans. – Sweta Patel, Silicon Valley Startup Marketing
9. Be Vulnerable and Authentic
Nobody at an event wants to let their vulnerabilities hang out, in case it’s not the “proper thing” to do. When everyone is striving for perfection, authenticity is a great differentiator. When you talk about your bad quarter, a client who almost caused you to shutter or any of a plethora of other interesting anecdotes that someone else might be able to relate to, you can create a genuine connection. – Cody McLain, SupportNinja
10. Create a Hashtag
Creating a hashtag is a great way to tie an in-person event to the digital world. As you’re posting on social media, use your new hashtag as well as the hashtag for the event. This way those who weren’t able to attend will be able to follow along. – Jared Atchison, WPForms
11. Use Personal Stories and Relatable Interests
Too many speakers and presenters are boring. One of the best ways to relate to an audience is to share a personal or real story that others can relate to. For example, in my presentations, I will include my dog Foxy or how our home was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. Events and topics like this are relatable to most people, and they will appreciate your time and effort when sharing such stories. – Zac Johnson, Blogger
12. Educate Your Team About Why You’re There
Make sure your people know why they are attending these events and what can come of them. I have been to so many events where reps are uninformed and unmotivated. It is very clear they are attending out of obligation. Don’t let that be your team. Make sure you are putting your best foot forward by having your best people represent and you will begin to see your ROI increase. – Camryn Skladany, Innovien Solutions
13. Actively Listen and Follow Up with Pertinent Questions
As a lawyer, I learned to always follow up with questions during a deposition. I take the same tack during in-person events. I usually let the other people I am networking with do most of the talking at first and I keep them talking by asking engaged follow-up questions. Then, once they have communicated their thoughts, I begin to introduce my story. Actively listening will make your brand stand out. – Ryan Bradley, Koester & Bradley, LLP
14. Live Your Brand in Everything You Do
When you attend events, go to meetings to network or even walk your dog, you are your brand and your personality must reflect your company culture. There should never be a time in your life from this day forward where you aren’t willing to sacrifice for your brand. When you speak, passion should flow through you. Your personality alone should urge your potential clients to buy. – Jason Criddle, Jason Criddle and Associates

Chicago’s First Snow was about two weeks ago, and I was truly overjoyed for the day, before it was shattered upon receiving my perspectives midterm back. My preceptor said at the outset before passing them back in the discussion group that “most people got a B+, which isn’t terrible, but there is room for improvement.” Thanks, preceptor, considering that anything less than a B in graduate school is actually considered failing, making a B+ the equivalent of a C or C-. It was particularly infuriating because the thing that everyone had failed to do was define specific terms from different perspectives; e.g. “superbase/structure” or “alientated” if discussing the Marxist perspective. The reason none of us--including myself--did not define these terms is not for lack of good writing skills, but because we were explicitly told to write the paper *FOR* the preceptors/MAPSS audience! We only had 6-8 doublespaced pages (which means only 3-4 pages of actual writing) to flesh out THREE perspectives AND make an argument for an interpretation of the piece we were given to apply these perspectives to. They even told us not to worry about proper citation, or a bibliography, because that’s how tailored to the audience it was. So none of us defined terms, and the entire cohort was marked down for it. Out of 270 people, only 17 people got an A or A-. The course is seriously set up for failure; I think it’s some way of creating a use for themselves. It truly is the most useless course I’ve ever taken. The amount of hand-holding that is done is also embarrassing- just when I thought I had shaken off this ridiculous course/my preceptor group for the quarter, I’ve learned that in addition to the three classes I will be taking for the winter quarter, I have to attend a 2 hr discussion group AGAIN with my preceptor group as a workshop for our MA proposals. I didn’t pay 50k to attend this school to be forced to help other MA students craft a good idea/proposal. Why on earth this is required is completely beyond me.
The funny thing is that I am actually doing extremely well in my other two courses, despite some depression I’ve been experiencing. In my Food & Cuisine course I actually wrote a prospectus that will double as my MA proposal for MAPSS and I earned a solid A on it, and the attention of a well-known Anthro faculty member. In Cultural Psychology we have five total papers over the quarter to submit in addition to the midterm, and I’ve earned solid As on all four I’ve turned in at this point. We get the grades for our midterms back tomorrow, which I’m really nervous about. I definitely took advantage of the soft guidelines and went over the ten page expectation, which I hope didn’t hurt my grade or my ability to be thorough and precise.
I definitely was having a rough go of things for most of October and bleeding into the beginning of November as well. It is very difficult to remember why I’m here, sometimes, especially when it’s so lonely. I feel as though I lose my grip on things easily when I’m overwhelmed. I tend to constantly keep the future and my chances of being happy in mind, and view every decision i make in the present as having a disproportionate amount of bearing on my future. I tend to think in “all or nothing” terms, and my world comes spiraling down daily.
I’ve been slacking off on a lot of readings lately, for all my courses. For perspectives, I just don’t see the point, being that I know what to expect of the final now that the midterm is over. If the discussion group was any good it would be incentive enough to do the reading, but the discussions are not very fruitful, so why bother? I still do what I can for Food and Cuisine, but the class is structured in a way that students actually present every single class on the material and try to stoke seminar-style conversations which never works. I get a good summary from them on the readings, and because the final is going to be research paper based on my own topic, the readings aren’t absolutely essential to me, though I wish I had the time to read them for my own interest and intellectual growth. I still do the readings for cultural psychology, mainly because it’s so fascinating and contentious that I can’t help but want to read these works.
The most salient thing I’ve learned so far in my short time at UChicago is that, like always, things are never what they seem. All the hype around UChicago being such a brutal and intense place just isn’t the case. It might be more stimulating or require more reading than other universities, but the people here aren’t any different than people I’ve met anywhere else; we’re all the same. As long as you’re able to rise to the occasion, you can do it. I’ve often overestimated other things in my life, like prestigious jobs and social statuses. I’ve always been a nervous kind of person to think that I won’t be smart enough or capable enough to handle various things, including UChicago. While it’s intense and deserves credit where credit is due, it’s doable.
I recently completed an embroidery project (above) where I sewed/beaded four constellations on a wool beret I purchased. It took probably 20 or so hours to complete, but I think it’s pretty, and gave me an excuse to shirk more readings. The constellations are: Pegasus, Ursa Major, Perseus, and Cetus.
Finals are coming up and thankfully I’ve only got two to worry about, Perspectives and Food and Cuisine. Cultural Psych doesn’t have a final, likely because of the five papers (4-5 pages each) due throughout the quarter. I know what to generally expect out of the Perspectives final, but I’m nervous about the Food and Cuisine final because it’s a research paper based on the prospectus written for the midterm. The prospectus was essentially just my MA proposal, so the research paper would be a mini version of my MA, which is daunting to complete within one week. I have a few sources already lined up, I just don’t know how to properly condense and tailor such a huge project to such a tiny space (really, it’ll be five pages of writing, which is nothing).
My boyfriend is driving down from Ithaca to visit me this week, which will be a lovely respite. He’s also forcing me to go to San Diego for a week during the Christmas break, which I’m not really looking forward to. For once in my life, I wanted a real-life snowy Christmas, and here was finally my chance. Now I’ll be in 70-degree weather as usual.
I’ve got the perspectives lecture in about three hours, so I’m going to do some reading! Enjoy the photos!

MLM Network Marketing Ripoff

MLM Network Marketing Ripoff
For almost 4 years I was struggling extremely hard to make it in network mlm marketing and nothing was happening. I followed my upline’s training, made my warm market list, cold market list, cold called prospects, did 3 way calls with prospect and upline, religiously went to meetings, attended training seminars both in and out of state, set appointments to show the plan and hosted countless home meetings. These expenses plus buying product on autoship was causing a serious drain on my cash flow. For all my hardwork, I had nothing to show for it but debt, 2 maxed out credit cards, an abundance of product, and a growing list of friends who avoided talking with me. I often thought to myself: There’s got to be a better way to do this. Something’s missing – it can’t be this hard?
Maybe you can relate.
I respected my MLM upline and wanted to copy them so I could duplicate their success.  But A low point of my earlier experience was that when I would talk with my upline, and some of the so-called gurus, about the specific plan they used to achieve success, I never got anything that I could quantify or frankly understand. I would ask my upline why we did not take greater advantage of the internet in our marketing plans, I was politely ignored. Confusion was a constant for me.
The worst part about it was, I could not – for the life of me – figure out why this wasn’t working! I was doing everything I had been told to do. In fact, I did way more than that. I was the kind of distributor you’d kill for.   My “WHY” was as strong then as it is today.  But I wasn’t any closer to the dream of financial freedom than I was when I started.  In fact, I began to feel as if I had been ripped off  by what I had been taught about network marketing.  So I decided to abandon most everything I had learned about mlm network marketing.  I began looking to the internet for real answers as to why I was spinning my wheels and possible solutions to my marketing problems.
My persistance to find the truth about the secrets of MLM internet Marketing success, and my unrelenting goal to achieve financial freedom, finally led turned on the light about my pass failures and what was wrong.  Armed with that new found knowledge, I was no longer confused and my entire view of mlm network marketng was changed forever.
A key discovery for me was that almost everything I’ve ever been taught about building a network marketing business is absolute BS!  The major reason for that is:  In the network marketing industry,  we have a genuine case of the blind leading the blind.  Network marketing is very unique in that it’s the only business opportunity that’s ever been marketed to the general public on such a massive scale.   Average, every-day people are told that they can jump right into this, with no prior experience what-so-ever and make a killing within 6 months!
For example: I was taught that everyone is a prospect. As a result, I hosted a meeting for a member of my downline. The two prospects (Husband & Wife) who attended were both unemployed, could not articulate any goals, not interested in starting a home business. I had lossed them after the introductions. But my worse regret was that I had passed the same bad training to my downline. As I drove home from this meeting (140 miles), I kelp thinking that we needed a better way to qualify our prospects. Find out what they want…
Thouands of people are being taught that you don’t need any experience to succeed as they join the MLM network marketing industry over and over again. As a result, 95% of people who get involved in network marketing have absolutely no foundation in effective sales techniques or good business practices.  I feel ripped off by the horrible mess of hype, hot air, misconceptions, falsehoods, delusions, distortions, myths and downright lies that get passed along from one sponsor to the next.  It is clear that this is what happens when you take a bunch of people who don’t have a clue about sales and marketing and have them tell a bunch of other people who don’t have a clue about sales or marketing, to go make a bunch of money doing it.  You see, not only do the common methods taught in MLM network marketing not work, they’re also destructive.  That’s why it’s so common to feel like you’re working yourself  into the ground and not getting anything out of it.
After about 2 1/2 years of having very little success, I was so stressed  that I took 4 months off from my MLM business to regroup from the frustrations, loss of money, and disapointments.
Well, I had put up with this for far too long.  So I started doing the opposite of what my upline had taught me to do and guess what?  I didn’t just start to experience success – I was flooded with it.
I finally stumbled on the secrets to a successful MLM internet network marketing plan.  I also stumbled upon a mentor who began to make sense to me about using the power of the Internet as a content rich source for MLM network marketing.  Now, my stress has diasppeared. I wake up each morning truly excited and enthusiastic about my Home MLM internet business.   I went from the desperation of attracting one person every 3 months into my business…to having more eager prospects than I could handle.
If you’re willing to be open-minded and not afraid of change that you can believe in,  you will discover how you can easily do this too.  I now know that  Network marketing doesn’t have to be so hard.   Using the wrong techniques – like trying to force a square peg into a round hole – makes it hard.

If you’re willing to be open-minded and not afraid of change that you can believe in,  you will discover how you can easily do this too.  I now know that  Network marketing doesn’t have to be so hard.   Using the wrong techniques – like trying to force a square peg into a round hole – makes it hard.
