[ cw: violence mention / death mention / ]
Will never stop thinking about how Leo, all alone in an endless void and being beaten again and again and again by the only other living thing around, still finds comfort in that space. The situation he was in was completely hopeless, and in any other circumstances he would not have escaped, at least not fast enough to save him from permanent (or even fatal) damage, be it physical or mental.
And yet, despite the bleakness of his situation, despite the agony and helplessness, all he needs is one glance at a crumbled photograph, one glance to remember his family, and that’s enough of a reason for him to smile.
Maybe that’s why his powers center around manipulating space - because no matter how much space is between them, no matter how dire his own situation may be, just the thought of his family, alive and okay, is enough to give Leo hope.

You ever think about how Hellboy (Movie) fell for the very same trope the comics itself is subverting about Hellboy? The entirety of the comic is about how Hellboy is nothing what people expect of him, how people always have expectations about him- what he should be, what he would be, his destiny- and how Hellboy goes against that. People expect Hellboy (Movie), the guy who's gruff and tough and has anger issues. Maybe a heart of gold in there, but that's predictable (because that's how the trope goes.)
People don't expect Hellboy, the tired old guy who tries everyday to help and save as many lives as he can. A guy who would much rather spend his time resting and eating pancakes than fighting anyone. A guy who cares so so deeply about the people around him, he's willing to come back from the dead just to help them. A guy who's so incredibly tired, been through hell and high water, fight for every bit of his right to be himself, and yet he's still amazingly kind. He cares so much about the world that seemed to despise him, it's a wonder how someone like him can last so long with hope of a better future.
Hellboy (Movie) doesn't hide what it is: a movie about fighting and beating monsters and bad guys while the main character just-so-happens to look like a demon. It's action-pack, corny, the kind of fun you don't really think that deep into. It's good, but it's not trying to be anything more than that. It's a fine movie, good in some regards and maybe even great depending on who you ask, but I wouldn't say it's a good adaptation.
Hellboy (Comics) is a lot of things. It's a story about a guy who fights supernatural creatures every once and while. It's also a story about kindness, the echoes of it and how much of an impact that could have on the world. It's a narrative about forging your own path. It's a journey about how your past or destiny doesn't defy you, it's what you make of it that matters. It's a trial to prove that it doesn't matter what anyone thinks of you, you're still going to live out your life the way you want. It's grim and murky, but there's hope, always.
But, really, when you boil it down, Hellboy (movie) is the archetype that Hellboy (comic) is trying to break down.

[ID: a digital drawing of mitsumi and shima from the manga series "skip and loafer", depicted in their outfits as seen in the opening of the anime adaptation: a yellow sundress, and a blue buttoned shirt with a pink collar, respectively. mitsumi is leaning slightly forward and glances at shima while smiling widely, while shima tilts his head sideways and smiles a small smile towards mitsumi. both of their hands are behind their backs. the background behind them, out of which they stand out, is a frame of pale blue in which cherry blossom petals are falling. end ID.]
finally drew two of my favorites... they're truly everything

i feel like the original series was red guy centered, the first season was for yellow guy, and i am BEGGING AND PRAYING that season 2 will be more about duck!! i will probably cry if anything happens to him though lol 💀 everytime writers break a comic relief character i just OUGSHGS.. it gets me.
h well I don't think you're wrong about that! Webseries being Red Guys time to shine, S1 of the TV show being for Yellow (esp the last two episodes I think? Even thought outside of that, he does get a lot of focus/he IS the one who talks to the audience the most directly).
From what I remember hearing, the pilot was pretty Duck-centered.
But I think even if he GETS his big moment in the sun, so to speak, it's NOT going to be as emotional as the other twos. On top of him just not being a very um… let's say sentimental character, he's just not the make-you-cry type! It's just not him imo!
IDK, I operate under the opinion that… in his weird little head, the most important thing that he values over everything is keeping the three of them together. Both because he thinks of them as a weird little family AND because he really doesn't have anyone else outside of the trio.
We also know from the interview, and you could maybe argue from the Family episode ( Who do you love?/Anyone who loves me back., I asked every member of my family who they loved the most, and they all said me ) that being loved is something that he actually values QUITE a bit! More than you would assume on first glance! He's weirdly upfront about it haha!
In that way, I imagine that if they were to TRY to pull something to put him in the spotlight in the way you're imagining (i.e. something emotional and focusing on his issues like they did with Yellow & Red) it would either focus on his desire to be loved OR his dedication to keeping the three of them together.
But I would argue they both already did that in the Family episode AND put him through the worst case-scenario in regards to those more emotional aspects of his character ( here I think the worst case scenario to him is the other two rejecting him, harshly, unambiguously and to his face, multiple times and the three of them separating ).
AND THE THING IS… THAT ALREADY HAPPENED! THAT DIDN'T BREAK HIM!
He had his little pout over it in his dress and was like FINE! I DON'T NEED THEM ANYWAYS! So, I really don't think that big "character-breaking" moment is coming. If the Family ep didn't get him I honest to God don't think there's anything else the house could throw at him that could get under his skin.

Hey I'm so sorry to hear your show got cancelled! That's so upsetting. I haven't gotten a chance to watch it but it looks really good and I can tell you really love it <3
Thank you for your kind words 💜 I am utterly devastated that this gem of a show couldn’t even make it pass the first season 😭

see like 90% of the time I fall off a series when there’s an extended flashback but mdzs is like half flashback and gripped me by the throat the entire time and I think it’s because the flashbacks were context for the relationship (and contradicting wwx’s biases) (lol), like there was context for politics and worldbuilding but it was done mostly with the relationship as a focal point… meanwhile with uncanny charm there was a flashback with the brother and his little brother and the underworld guy which is all tangentially related to the main character but that was like. 7+ weeks without the mc + li like if I’m reading a romance I’m reading it for the romance. and I need to get back into legend of the fox bead which had like, I dunno, 6 weeks of li backstory but it’s not context I particularly care about because it’s primarily relationship context with the li + someone from the past, which does give an idea for why the li is who she is and also why she’s a spirit, but if I’m honest, I don’t particularly care. I think mdzs did it best because it’s very frustrating for the reader but still pulls you in, it’s a good balance of tension + momentum and it’s all relevant. a while ago a pal told me ‘yeah a lot of people hated the novel’s structure’ & I was like ‘????? tasteless. enjoy the hostile puzzle feeder of mxtx’s narrative.’
