disjointed thoughts on The Alienist 1x01& 1x02

“this show is dark,” she says to herself. “would paying for more lighting kill them?”

ohhhh but it’s quite grim the other way too

I’m really never sure how I feel about people playing Theodore Roosevelt, y’know? Especially after the death of his first wife but before the Presidency. It’s a hard thing to get, I think? He’s politically ambitious and campaigning against corruption in the NYPD, but this version of TR feels kind of ... hmm. Well, like short-hand. If he weren’t TR I wouldn’t have any idea of his aims or personality, which doesn’t strike me as good story-telling.

those spectacles look really, really good on Daniel Bruhl.

I know that “crimes against the marginalized probably committed by the upper class and therefore covered up by the police” is narrative shorthand for a lot of the systematic injustice and inequality of Gilded Age US, but I reserve my judgement on how well this is going to be pulled off.

why are no women wearing chemises under their corsets? or maybe this is getting up towards the era of combinations? idk? why isn’t Sara Howard wearing a chemise or combinations under her corset? she clearly has the money for it. ffs, showrunners. get my niche interests right.

I know very little about the Isaacson brothers except that I hope that they lead happy, fulfilling lives! unlikely, but c’mon, showrunners!

I’m not saying this show is doing an outstanding job dealing with sexuality and gender identity, but I am pleasantly surprised (and simultaneously disappointed in contemporary society) that TNT is running a show where the main character has a better understanding of sex and gender, and treats people with respect and accordingly, in 1896 NYC, than a non-insignificant number of US American politicians.

Awww, look. Sara Howard and John Schuyler Moore really do care about each other?

I’m not sure who’s more long suffering - Sara for putting up with John’s bullshit, Laszlo for putting up with Sara & John’s bullshit, Sara & John for putting up with Laszlo’s bullshit, or Mary Palmer for putting up with Laszlo’s bullshit. Stay tuned, folks.
