Alexander I: Hey, Bonaparte! 👑 Just arrived at Tilsit. Let's get this treaty party started! 🎉
Napoleon: Ah, finally, the Russian bear is here! 🐻 Let's settle this, bro. 💪 But first, gotta say, you looking good, A! 😍
Alexander I: Haha, thanks, Nap! 😄 Can't deny that French swagger, man. Looking sharp yourself, Emperor! 👌
Napoleon: Merci, my dude! 😎 So, let's get down to business. 💼 But maybe we can sneak in a quick game of cards later? 🃏
Alexander I: Game on, mon ami! ♠️♥️♣️♦️ But seriously, we need to wrap this up before everyone loses patience! 😅
Napoleon: Don't worry, A! 😉 We'll speed things up. Just one thing, can't resist asking... you ever thought about joining forces? 🤝
Alexander I: Woah, Nap! 😮 That's a bold move, man. Let's finish this treaty first, and then we can discuss future bromances, okay? 💪
Napoleon: Fair enough, A! 👍 Let's seal the deal on this peace treaty ASAP. 🕊️ We'll have plenty of time to talk alliances later. 💪
Alexander I: Agreed, Bonaparte! 🤝 Let's show the world what diplomacy and a little bit of bromance can do. 💪
Napoleon: Absolutely, Alex! 🌍 Together, we'll be unstoppable! 💥 But seriously, let's speed it up before they throw tomatoes at us. 🍅
Alexander I: Haha, can't have that! 🙅‍♂️ Let's focus and finish this treaty, Nap.
Napoleon: Roger that, A! 🙌 Time to get down to business and make history. Let's do this! 💪💪💪

7 July 1807
“Well!” says Napoléon as he enters his tent. “That went exceedingly well, don’t you think?”
A noncommittal hum accompanies the sound of fabric against fabric as the tent’s entrance shuts.
“The Czar seems an incredibly capable leader,” he continues, lighting a candle. When had it gotten so late? “Strong, smart, willing to see reason. Handsome fellow, too. They say that his grandmother’s profile can be seen in his; Catherine must have been a graceful woman indeed.”
“Do you truly believe that he will honor the treaty that you signed back there?”
Frowning, Napoléon straightens before turning. Marius stands in the entrance, face half in shadows as the glow of candlelight sets the other half ablaze in orange light. “Why shouldn’t he? The terms were exceptional, especially considering the Russian defeat.”
“British trade is essential to Russian commerce,” says Marius seriously. “Even if they do mean to honor it — and I have my doubts — they will be ruined in a matter of years and will have no choice but to recant.”
Napoléon stares at him for a long beat before passing his judgment: “You’re jealous.”
Marius sputters, shifting so that the shadows and light distort over his face. “Jealous?” he repeats incredulously.
“It’s plain enough to see,” says Napoléon dismissively, sitting down in front of his writing table and pulling out his latest reports and correspondences. There is always so much to be doing when one rules a continent. “You saw and heard me today, perhaps even read the letter I penned to Joséphine in the afternoon, and you feel jealous.”
Behind him, he hears Marius’s breath, as heavy as if he’d just exercised. “Of what could I possibly be jealous?”
“My attention? My affection?” Napoléon guesses, uncorking his ink. He’ll be needing more soon. “On my word, you’re as bad as Joséphine; I don't understand why she takes these things so seriously. She is always afraid that I will fall in love. Can she not understand that love is not for me?”
“I am not one of your trite mistresses to toss aside when you are finished.” The sounds are uncharacteristically sharp in Marius’s mouth. “Nor am I some politician or ambassador to be wooed and manipulated to your will.”
“No,” says Napoléon blandly, cutting a fresh quill. “That would mean falling into place, which you clearly have no intentions of ever doing.” It’s meant to sound affectionate, but the words are clipped and ugly as he says them out loud. He doesn’t correct it.
“‘Falling into place,’” Marius scoffs. “Do you hear yourself? What happened to the new world order? What happened to rising through merit, not birth? Of creating opportunity for everyone to have access to the tools for greatness.”
“Oh? And what merit have you shown, to be questioning me? Riding my coattails to the top of an empire?”
Behind him, there’s shocked silence.
Dipping his quill into his ink, Napoléon continues. “I have come to realize that men are not born to be free.” The quill scratches against the paper as he speaks. “Liberty is a need felt by a small class of people whom nature has endowed with nobler minds than the masses of men. Now, perhaps I have spoken cruelly of you — you did do well in your assistance drafting the Code — but what right has that given you to criticize me, your emperor, so freely?”
There is a choking sound followed by silence, and Napoléon nearly turns before Marius’s voice at last comes, barely above a whisper. “This … and these are your true feelings, then? That men are born unequal, that liberty is not a birthright to all?”
“It would be chaos,” agrees Napoléon with a laugh. “You remember the Directory — the Convention? Individual liberty must be suspended for the good of the collective.”
“But not in everyone’s case.”
Napoléon shrugs. “Some people need to be allowed more mobility to do what needs to be done. You and I, for example.”
“Not you and I,” corrects Marius solemnly. “Just you.” There’s a rustling of fabric, and when Napoléon turns, he sees the opening to his tent falling shut.
A flash of indecision wages inside of him before Napoléon is on his feet, careful not to overturn his ink, and following after Marius.
His pace is a brisk walk — it would be unseemly for the men to see their emperor chasing after someone — so it takes a full minute before he is able to catch up to Marius’s long gait, and when he does, it’s only because Marius has been forced to a stop to prepare his horse.
“Marius, where are you going?” asks Napoléon with a sort of exasperated impatience. “We haven’t finished treating with the Prussians.”
“It sounds as though you are more than capable of treating without me,” answers Marius, placing a saddle on a chestnut mare. One of the soldiers comes over to offer assistance, and Marius accepts the help with a nod before standing upright and facing Napoléon. “I cannot do this anymore.”
“Nonsense,” Napoléon says with a scoff. “It will hardly take a few days more, and with his treaty already finished, Alexander should be leaving on the morrow.”
A deep exhalation. “I’m not talking about the treaties, I’m talking about this. Us.”
The world drops out from beneath Napoléon’s feet. He is, however, an emperor and cannot be seen to lose his composure. “Marius, we can talk about this.”
“I don’t think we can,” says Marius, his eyes lowering. “Not anymore. Too much has happened, too much has changed. And you … you’re not the man you once were.”
“I am,” insists Napoléon, but even as he says it, he knows that Marius is right. “Stay with me. Please.”
Marius shakes his head slowly before turning away. The soldier — blast his competence! — affirms that the horse is prepared, and Marius steps into the stirrups.
Even once the soldier has been dismissed, there are still others milling about, so Napoléon forces himself to remain in check. They’ve seen him lose his temper before, of course, but over battles or incompetent dignitaries — not a single man. Not Marius. He clears his throat. “Where will you be going, then?”
Marius gives him a bittersweet smile. “I’m not yet certain. Perhaps I’ll stay with a friend.”
A memory washes over him of a gangly boy, not more than twenty, in an austere café. My grandfather and I had an argument. I have been staying with a friend since. His heart feels open and raw. “You’ll write to me, then? When you arrive? Let me know you got in safe?”
“I will.” Marius’s voice cracks on the second word, and Napoléon has to look away.
“Well then. Do what you must.”
“I love you.”
The words are a devastating blow, and were Napoléon any less the man he is, they might have brought him to his knees then and there.
He is an emperor.
“You may keep the horse. A gift from the empire.”
The dismay rolls off of Marius like a wave, and still, Napoléon cannot make himself look. “Goodbye, Napoléon.”
The horse is spurred into motion, and Napoléon listens as the sound of hooves retreats behind him and into the distance.
Goodbye, my love.
