I've been wanting to make a post like this for a while now, and well, having just finished a crucial stage of my life, I think this is a good a time as any.

It's gonna be a long one

Like, *LONG* long

Like, I Am Going To Mention Every Single One Of My Mutuals By Name long (if you'd rather not be tagged in the future, do warn me)

First of all, the primary purpose of this post is as a letter of thanks for the wonderful months you Tumblr peeps have provided me this year. I am not hesitant to say joining the hellsite was the single best decision I have made in the last 12 months, heck, I think about 2/3rds of the friends I mantain regular contact with nowadays came from here. But this wouldn't be a long post if it was just a brief "thanks y'all for improving my life". I'm gonna get into detail. And I'm gonna be sappy about it. You can't stop me. You're not my mother. And not even my mother could stop me from posting this.

I would've said "I thought long and hard about who I'd start with", if there was any question about it. There isn't. @tearychildren, where do I even fucking begin. I can't really say anything too specific because if I begin I don't think I'll stop and half this post is gonna be about you, and this is already a very long post, so I'm just going to leave it at this, you already know well enough just how much you matter to me.

Going onwards, another of the early spots goes to who I believe was my first mutual, definitely one of the first people I followed, @chlorohexidine, a long-time mutual and recent good friend, our daily chats, however short, never cease to be highlights of my days, your art is really cute (love me some rounded shapes) and brainstorming ideas for your TTRPG campaigns is always fun (I really like your worldbuilding, too). It's only fair to mention your (and my, just needed to make this segue well) good friend @xsenpi, infodumping touhou to you both genuinely got me through that month, and Undertale 2: Revenge of The Robots with Rei and TC has been a blast so far.

@soundsofastar is another that warrants special mention for actually changing my brain chemistry and making me appreciate the local wildlife even more than usual (if we ever meet in person, WE ARE GOING ON A NICE LONG WALK TO LOOK AT BIRDS TOGETHER, WHEREVER IT IS WE ARE WHEN THAT HAPPENS, MARK MY WORDS). Your art also makes me feel things. Not many things make me feel stuff a lot. That is impressive. I should be in a good spot to finish reading the Illuminae Files within the next few days, so please do pester me about it, otherwise the piece of media that the next person I'll talk about recommended to me will consume all the time I'd read it in.

So, the next person I'll talk about, @northwest-cryptid, thanks for letting me use our DMs as my Mabinotepad, and for getting me into Mabinogi in the first place, you've been both the direct and the indirect cause of many good times, and I gotta be honest I kinda admire you a lil' bit (and if you know anything about how I talk, I am horrible at expressing vulnerability, admiration and these sorts of emotions without a bunch of euphemisms unless I'm doing this sort of tangent where I attempt to talk about myself in a more depersonalized way, so what that sentence there essentially means is "I admire you a lot and you are an inspiration").

Another pivotal figure in how this year shaped out is @ratlesshonret, creator of The Bird Nest, site of many good times, who has exposed me and many others to some wonderful media (I AM GOING TO FINISH POCKET MIRROR SOMETIME, MARK MY WORDS), reading through all the chats in the server is usually a blast, too. Your contributions to my life cannot be understated. Seriously, thanks.

The next great friend I'll mention is @transgender-lea-crosscode, we've started talking more only recently, but have already bonded a fair bit, I reckon, damn you're good at Blazblue. You've dared to make me good at the game and for that, I commend you. You should say words about Zeroranger in my general direction sometime, I'd be happy to hear/read them.

Now for those mutuals that I don't really speak to, but are responsible for like, 75% of my total notes, like, everyone is more than welcome to jump into my DMs and start talking about anything whenever, but y'all specifically are folk I'd have started talking with regularly ages ago if I knew what to talk about. @hoshinoreika2004, @ward-leon, @edenplumreal, @tabnk2, @tapok-eve , @boofbv and @sorcerousbrick, thanks for all the lil' dopamine hits.

Shoutouts to @wretchedbirdthing for being normal about that bird, you're a blast to see on my dash and I wish you luck snapping those collarbones in twain to hear those gay little squawks.

@freiflies and @ottisbuns, alongside Tapok, Vic and Honret, y'all bring life into The Bird Nest, and although I haven't really shown up much there recently, I still read most of everything, the words are cool, keep up the good work!

@genericgirl420 and @mikusays-transrights, you two are the mutuals that suffer the least with The Distances, so let's do this in a more, well, local fashion. Ok back to speaking in simplified Old German. This next section goes out to @lemocoffe and @teacup-of-doom, both of whom I haven't really interacted much, but what little there was was quite great, this is, in fact, an invite to do more of the interact-y thing. Y'all are cool.

@aurora-veil, @limbuscompanyyuri and @thevanishedpeople-intothenight are up next, some of my first mutuals, y'all post good. And have been doing so consistently. For the past like, 9 months or so. That's impressive.

@meltingadoration, @holyitsquiverrflynn and @jestressofnihil, my more recent moots, there hasn't been much time to do the friendship-building and knowing each other thing, but all that means is that there's still many opportunities for that, which is cool.

Last but not least, the mutuals who I haven't quite gotten to know as well, but I'm inviting to chat anytime, @readysetgargoyle, @atlasmothss, @meeresengel, @flesh-borne, @b-kut, @aureatecenotaph, @risingdragonblade, @agender-witchery (your posts helped me immensely in figuring out gender, thanks for that) and @lich-of-lcorp. Y'all are cool, we should talk more.

And one last section for all those who I've been in touch with but aren't mutuals with, for any and all reasons (I do tend to reblog very, well, erratically), y'all deserve to be on this list, but I just didn't wanna bother you too much (I do have words of thanks to say though, if you want them, just ask).

Another way to interpret bunny girl suit

Reisen Udongein Inaba from Touhou, I have zero knowledge of her lore until I started writing this paragraph. I even have the wiki page up on my second monitor.

This piece I dallies in a pose just from imagination. I had a bit of brainstorming thinking of how I can create her bullets to which I just made a separate file and used a rectangle and a triangle haha. Everything else was standard. For the background I had to find a sliding door hallway and manipulated it. pretty proud of how it turned out especially when compared to her stage in Touhou: Imperishable Night

you know i’m starting to think that having regular dreams where i take the place of touhou characters living out their daily lives isn’t normal

so for context i am not neurodivergent whatsoever but i am very obsessed with touhou and an active touhou fanfic writer. as a result two things have happened

1) i have made full mental “headcanon” maps of how i imagine many places in touhou. the palace of earth spirits, the hakurei and moriya shrines, the yakumo residence. the majority of the scarlet devil mansion. i have every single room and its layout shoved in my brain. memorized. it makes me able to do a lot more scene description and makes for much more compelling writing if i have a great sense of the space my characters are in

2) a good 50% of my fanfic ideas are developed while i am trying to fall asleep. i get in bed, turn on my fan, close my eyes, and then brainstorm until i pass out. it is the last thing my mind thinks of before i sleep

i think that as a result of both of these my brain has started playing out the daily lives of various touhou characters in my dreams. i go to sleep and wake up in the body of like ran or whoever and my brain thinks this is normal. i will get out of bed and say hi to chen and yukari or whoever and before anything actually interesting happens i’ve awakened and i am extremely confused.

I HAVE BEEN RIN KAENBYOU TWO NIGHTS IN A FUCKING ROW. I FEEL LIKE I’M GOING INSANE. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR LIKE TWO MONTHS.

seeing some of the new designs you made for yuzuki and co im curious as to what your design process is? especially in terms of how you approach it in terms of folklore, i know it can be tricky to put that into words but seeing them made me wonder!

AAA I'm so glad I get to talk about my designs... I don't always know what I'm doing with those but I know enough to answer your questions!

All in all, I would define my approach in designing them in terms of folklore and mythology as similar as to how Touhou does it. I like to say I aim to integrate sufficient references to the Monster/Youkai/Legendary Creature's lore but also sprinkle in my own interpretations when I feel like it's possible AND also put the character's personality on the foreground when designing. It's all about balance and what makes sense for the character. For example, Naoko's design is more "urban" in its approach because of her personality, but I still snuck in some "that's-a-stretch" type references with her scarf being loosely based on the bakeneko's towel. Meanwhile, Akira's design has little to no proper references to Kitsune to underline how she wants little to nothing to do with Kitsunes themselves.

There was a time where I could just churn out written designs on the get go, but nowadays I think this is no longer something I think I can do because, you see, I learned how to draw and to think like a character designer. An amateur one, sure, but I feel like this process is the direction I want to go.

So I think my design process nowadays is as follow:

Define character concept. In my process, the character's personality and story is the very first step of the process. There are cases where the design comes first and then the story, but all in all, the story is what dictates the character.

Research about the elements that are part of the character's design. Not only the folklore surrounding the monster I am basing the MagiMon on, but also the pop-culture perception of that monster. It's always useful to know how it is perceived. In general, I know that whatever type of take i want to have on a certain myth, I know I want to go in a direction that I like, so it's good for me to know what I like and what I hate (This is especially the case for Greek Mythology characters, especially the Olympians)

BRAINSTORM! The most/least fun part and the one where it varies from character to character. Some characters have their designs outlined from the getgo, others take a big while for my brain to figure out something. But in general, I go on google image, pinterest or just browse books I have to build a visual library. Build a moodboard and whatnot!

Recently, I found that the best way for me to properly envision a new character is to mentally faceclaim the character with the closest character there is. For example, Vera, the Pegasus MagiMon (that I have yet to design), I picture her as just Platinum. That gives me a mold that i can just reshape in the future.

I also think that I want to find one thing that makes the character stands out from the rest. The most easy part is with the head: a good tip I have received is to have a very specific head silhouette for the character so that they can be recognized from a glance in a crowd. Akira's spiky hair, Gashadokuro's hood, Naoko's pulled hair, Hikaru's one side front bangs. Yuzuki's simple shape also distinguishes her from the rest since she's the protagonist.

This step also depends on how solidified my character's design is, but I sometimes doodle the character or parts of the character either with a loose brush or on kraft paper. To test the grounds.

And next... Well if i have the courage... I draw them! And then I color them. I usually decide on colors on the go, so I don't know if I have any tips to give related to that. I try to follow my gut feeling and go on a "if it fits, it's fine by me" philosophy.

I hope I answered your question! If not you can still ask me for precisions and I'll gladly answer them. Character designs are my passion and discussing that is such a pleasure no matter what!

As a last note, my favourite character designs, and what i usually turn to when i'm in a pinch: Arknights, Touhou Project, Guilty Gear (Strive especially) and Dungeon Meshi. Akihiko Yoshida's art is also a good source of inspiration of mine. Theree's many more but i don't want to make it any longer.

I have given it some thought and... based on the results of the poll, and some brainstorming, I have decided to give Hana... a power! After all, Lis made a good point that a named touhou character without a power just didn't fit right at all...

I'd imagine Hana's proximity to youkai and supernatural stuff in general would have given her plenty of basis to develop a power anyway.

So! What is her power, you might ask? Well, given she is still a human, it's nothing all to extravagant... However, it is one that I think might make for some very interesting plot points for the future. Namely, when it comes to the risk her existence and purpose poses for the balance of Gensoukyou.

Thus, her power is...

The ability to broker positive outcomes.

In other words, the ability to make good deals. Yes, get your "art of the deal" jokes out of the way now.

What this would, in essence, imply is that she would be able to broker a deal between two parties, possibly including herself, in which there is a net positive outcome for all involved. Be it making peace between two people or simply working out a trade agreement in a way that both parties stand to profit.

i walk into the upscale fandom restaraunt wearing my finest fancy clothing. there’s like an ascot and shit. it’s dignified. respectable.

the waiter seats me in a nice booth by the window. i order their finest slice of fandom sirloin, medium well. i nod to the other equally fancy fandom connoisseurs. they nod back, acknowledging my presence.

the steak arrives. i take a single bite. something is missing.

i walk to the centre of the restaraunt, and gather the attention of all the connoisseurs as I draw out a single item.

a giant heinz ketchup bottle with “touhou” written on the side.

i walk back towards my steak. there is horror in their eyes; i meet it with determination, daring them to stop me. i watch as the light in the maitre’d’s eyes flickers and dies.

speaking of stupid impractical ideas, now that it’s been planted in my head i’m still thinking about a discord server. like i know that there are, undoubtedly, hundreds of touhou servers out there, But

that said i have 240 followers and if even a quarter of that many take interest that’s literally unmanageable. and also i just demonstrably don’t talk that often in group chats so there’s not even much point in it. especially since i’m guessing a lot of other people would probably be in similar situations

the only real benefit is that i’d be in a situation where i can control who’d be in there or not (that is, i don’t have to assume the person in charge has similar values to myself bc i’ve been in situations where that’s not been the case and that’s been A Fun Experience To Have) and the overall group chat discord of being able to wander in and brainstorm some total nonsense

but also it’d be nice to have some direct interaction with other touhou ppl given how i still kind of exist off in my own corner of everything (which is also part of the reason i’d prefer my own server rather than trying to slip into an existing one if u feel me)

That really sucks, dude. I know that sometimes I wonder if I should just shift to something more fluffy and lighthearted but I know in my heart I wouldn’t like that at all. (That’s not what I was pondering just now by the way. I was thinking of steering my writing style a bit is all.)

I know that evil characters can be hard to interact with, but it’s definitely not impossible. All it takes is some brainstorming and work.

Touhou RP tends to be fluffy, but I personally see the characters a different way. They’re quite literally monsters, and I like to portray them as such. Call it edgy, but I do see these women as creatures that would hunt down humans because it’s just in their nature. It’s a shame that every time someone with that kind of character comes around, they disappear too soon. But maybe that’s just me.
