It may be just me but I found it kind of neat that they brought back Toots (Who before hadn’t appeared since “Smitten Kitten”) in The Tom and Jerry Show (Although for some reason she is called “Toodles Galore”, which is the name of the other main love interest of Tom)

Yup, I'm still in a Tom & Jerry mood 😅 I don't know who do you like to ship Tom with, but I've always imagined him being with Toodles (the white Toodles, not to be confused with Toots - the small yellow one) who I believe is the most recurring Tom's love interest at least in the classic shorts. Finally neither Jerry nor Butch will interrupt their sweet moment. ☺️💙

i want you all to know that the tom and jerry chase illustration of toots with devil jerry with the heavenly/diabolical imagery is utterly fascinating to me given the original context of devil jerry's existence - in that the original shorts he appears in, devil jerry embodies jerry's jealousy at the idea of not being the center of tom's attention, jealousy of tom's love interests - when toots is one of tom's love interests. like yes elaborate illustrations based on tom and jerry lore that i would have come up with myself and belong in the moma lets goooo

I’d be interested to hear any classic cartoon recommendations outside of Warner/Fleischer/MGM/Disney— nothing against those studios, and I’ve been enjoying and looking forward to your Warner reviews lately.

GOOD QUESTION, and THANK YOU!! i wish i could give a more interesting answer—i haven’t had a lot of time to sit down and actually watch cartoons outside of reviews, and the ones i do watch tend to be from those studios, so a lot of these may be from hazy recollections BUT!

predictable of the crazy bird lover to recommend him, BUT i’d definitely give the Woody Woodpecker cartoons a go, particularly any directed by Shamus Culhane. The Barber of Seville is a classic, Who’s Comin’ Who, Ski for Two… i’m a big fan of the earliest shorts with Mel Blanc such as Knock Knock or The Screwdriver too. and if you haven’t seen any of Tex Avery’s Walter Lantz shorts (Crazy Mixed-Up Pup, Legend of Rock-a-bye Point, Shh-h-h-h-h) do yourself a favor and watch them

i’m fond of the Gandy and Sourpuss cartoons over at Terrytoons, but it’s been so long since i’ve seen one and i’ve hardly seen any that i couldn’t really give a solid recommendation… TT also has Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle, which are worth checking out, but again, sadly could not give a solid recommendation because i’ve seen so little and it’s been a few years :(

Screen Gems i think is unanimously accepted as one of the weakest golden age studios, but sometimes some of them are so absurd they’re worth watching. there are a few gems in the Fox and Crow series—The Fox and the Grapes is directed by Frank Tashlin which is an INSTANT seal of quality. has Mel Blanc as both characters too, and it’s about the closest SG gets to being adjacent to Warners—The Magic Fluke, produced by UPA, is fantastic too. (and on the topic of UPA, i implore you to watch Rooty Toot Toot if you haven’t.)

the Herman and Katnip series at Famous Studios is 100% a guilty pleasure of mine. they were a primary inspiration behind The Simpsons’ own Itchy and Scratchy, so that should tell you enough—there’s something so captivating about the sheer discomfort the shorts radiate that it immediately hooked me in. again, have only seen very few and aim to change that, but a few i enjoy off the top of my head would be Mice Meeting You and Mice-Capades

hmmmmm… i can’t think of many Van Beuren shorts to recommend, but the Tom and Jerry series (the humans) are fun. again, have seen very little and it’s been quite awhile so i don’t have many recommendations off the top of my head, but Hook and Ladder Hokum is a fun one directed by Frank Tashlin. Rough on Rats is another VB short that is one of the most delightfully twisted cartoons i’ve ever seen (thank you, Devon!) and would like to impart that on others

I KNOW MUCH OF THIS IS VAGUE and there’s so many more i could give and am probably ignorant to… i recently stumbled upon a stop motion short by Frank Tashlin that has Warner DNA all over it, and Bob Clampett’s one shot at Republic makes for a very fun watch too. there are so many cartoons out there and so many i have yet to discover myself, but i hope this is a start!
