On March 13th 1947, the musical Brigadoon opened at the Ziegfeld Theatre, in New York City.
Brigadoon, a musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe that tells the story of a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every hundred years, though to the villagers, the passing of each century seems no longer than one night.
Two American tourists, Tommy and Jeff, lost in the Scottish Highlands, stumble upon Brigadoon. The schoolmaster, a Mr. Lundie, explains to them that two hundred years ago, the local parish pastor prayed to God to have Brigadoon disappear, only to reappear for one day every 100 years, to protect the village from being changed by the outside world. None of the people of Brigadoon can be permitted to leave the town or it will disappear forever.
By now, Tommy is falling in love with one of the villagers, Fiona. Tommy asks Mr. Lundie if an outsider could be permitted to stay. Mr. Lundie replies, “A stranger can stay if he loves someone here – not jus’ Brigadoon, mind ye, but someone in Brigadoon – enough to want to give up everythin’ an’ stay with that one person. Which is how it should be. ‘Cause after all, lad, if he love someone deeply, anythin’ is possible.”
Tommy has fears and doubts about the strangeness of the situation, and he and Jeff go back to New York. But Tommy can’t forget Fiona. Months later, the two men travel again to the spot where Brigadoon was; as expected, there’s nothing there. Tommy laments, “Why do people have to lose things to find out what they really mean?” Just as he and Jeff turn to leave, they hear the music again (“Brigadoon”), and Mr. Lundie appears. Tommy walks across the bridge to him, as Mr. Lundie explains: “You shouldna be too surprised, lad. I told ye when ye love someone deeply, anythin’ is possible. Even miracles.” Tommy waves goodbye to Jeff, who stares incredulously as Tommy and Mr. Lundie disappear into the mist.
The wonderful music includes “Brigadoon,” “I’ll Go Home with Bonnie Jean,” “The Heather on the Hill,” and “Almost Like Being in Love"
The original theatrical musical ran for 581 performances. It starred David Brooks, Marion Bell, Pamela Britton, and Lee Sullivan. In 1949, Brigadoon opened at the West End theatre and ran for 685 performances; many revivals have followed. AMost of us will know Brigadoon from the 1954 film version which starred Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, and a 1966 television version starred Robert Goulet and Peter Falk, yes Columbo himself!
I can’t speak for the theatre version, but I looked through the cast of Brigadoon, and naturally there are no Scots in the movie, we have Americans and English, we even have a Welshman and a Northern Irishman but, like the village itself the Scots are missing!

"You doing okay?" Oliver asked Roy, helping him with a tray of glasses
"Good enough I guess" Roy had to yell to be heard over the music. Oliver nodded and checked his phone. "Shit, I gotta run of for a bit"
"You mean an hour" Roy said bitterly. "I've noticed you and Laurel always disappear on me, and it's not your fucking club"
Oliver went to answer but his phone buzzed. "I have to go-" "Whatever" Roy stepped outside
He took a few deep breaths and tried to calm himself down. 'You live in a mansion now, yeah he leaves all the time but at least he comes back'
"Roy Harper?" Someone, a male, asked from behind him. "Yeah?" Roy turned around, the person sticking a syringe into his neck, injecting him with something.
Roy fell to the ground and tried to crawl away. He tried to scream for help, for Laurel, for Oliver, anyone. A kick to his face knocked him unconscious.
------
Oliver returns to Verdant a bit annoyed, Diggle apologizing over the false alarm
Laurel ran to frantically. "I can't find Roy! I've searched this place top to bottom"
"Shit, I left him earlier for Hood stuff"
"You did what?!" Laurel screamed. Oliver grabbed her arms
Tommy ran over. "Ollie, you need to see this, it's that serial killer from the Glades" He held out his phone. It showed Roy tied up with a camera in his face.
"Roy Harper, arrested for larceny, theft and drug possession. He thinks being adopted by Oliver Queen makes him innocent! He's no different from the gang members who killed my wife!"
"Felicity, find his location now" Oliver hissed at his phone. "You can't go" Laurel grabbed his arm. "He'll kill Roy, I have to"
Laurel nodded and wiped away tears. "Tommy, watch Laurel, I'll try and find my son"
-----
"I can't get an accurate location, he's using something to bounce his IP address anywhere" Felicity cursed.
Oliver stood in front of the screen in the Arrow Cave, watching Roy.
His foster son wasn't even calling for help, he looked completely broken. "I got it!" Felicity yelled. "The subway tunnels go!"
-----
Laurel watched the stream too, a complete wreck.
"Why should you get to live?" "I shouldn't. Just do it!" Roy screamed. "No one's gonna miss me, I'm just a waste"
"No you're not" Laurel sobbed. Roy closed his eyes. "Joesph Falk!" Oliver roared, the man turned around to face him, an arrow flying past him and near Roy's restrained wrist.
"Let. The. Kid. Go" Oliver growled. "He deserves this!" "He does not! You don't get to decide this anymore"
Oliver titled his head at the arrow, Roy quickly understood and attempted to cut the tape.
"Come on Ollie" Laurel said under her breath. "He deserves this!" Falk pulled out a gun, Oliver tackled him and the feed went dark.
"No! No no no no!" Laurel sobbed, covering her mouth. Tommy held her close.
Roy cut the tape off and ripped it off his other wrist, dropping to the ground. He rolled out of the way to a corner and curled up in a ball, covering his ears.
Oliver shot an arrow through Falk's heart, killing him instantly. He reached out to Roy but was met with a whimper.
His heart broke, his kid was scared of him. "I'll get you back to your parents, let's go" Roy accepted his hand
-----
Oliver got Roy a car and quickly changed into civilian clothes, finding his fiancé in hysterics. "Is he? Is Roy-Roy!" Laurel crushed him into a hug.
"Off!" Roy let out a noise. "You're grounded for going outside by yourself but I'm not going to enforce it because you were kidnapped!" Laurel searched him over.
Oliver hugged him next. "He was wrong" He muttered to him. "You deserve to live" Roy sighed with content in his arms

crawling into your asks hi Tommy. can you tell me about your ocs. Please <3 🐕☝️
hi eve hi hi! okay i will tell you about adam because i have the most coherent thoughts on him. although i can't guarantee coherence lol 😅. um i like to call adam columbo 2.0 because he reminds me of columbo. he's short, blind in one eye (is it common knowledge that peter falk wore a glass eye?), and his clothes are always in disarray. but one of my favorite things about columbo are these random anecdotes of dubious credibility that he just drops. "columbo's wife" is a character in her own right, if you believe she exists. if you don't, then columbo just lies easily and often to gain suspects' trust.
now, adam would never be a cop, but he does lie often to gain people's trust. and i think it's often in the form of anecdotes. he tells a lot of stories about growing up in [insert random town that he DIDN'T grow up in] or college stories (he didn't go to college). um i guess this says more about what i personally believe about columbo than anything.
here's some random facts about all my ocs too
adam: he drives exactly 5 miles over the speed limit at all times. unless it's snowing, then he drives exactly the speed limit. he's 5'6". the most expensive article of clothing he owns is cowboy boots. he drives a beat up ford ranger from the 90s. he can speak spanish and french semi fluently, but can barely read them.
willow: she can always tell when you're lying. she knits her own sweaters. she speaks french better than adam does. despite never living more than 100 miles from the ocean, she's never been to the beach. she speaks with a lisp.
river: he has three chipped teeth. he's a fairly competent guitar player and has played shows with his little brother's band. he wanted to study engineering in school. willow taught him to braid his hair.

Love Japan's whole thing about being enraptured with strange, weathered, cosy looking old western men. First the Peter Falk craze and then the ads with Tommy Lee Jones in where he plays an alien teacher. I can't even remember what was being advertised, I just remember my mom used to rave about those ads

The Scorpio Races Festival 2022
Week Four: THE RACES
Reading Challenges: chapter 48 - chapter 66
We delve deeper into the traditions of Thisby through Tommy’s funeral. How does this diverge from the spiritual and religious beliefs that we’ve seen so far?
As I see it there are two sorts of religion on Thisby: a form of christianity and a more "pagan" religion we see expressed through Tommy's funeral, but also through the use of bells and holly leaves to harness the magic of the water horses. I imagine that like in many other places the "pagan" religion (sorry I don't know what else to call it, I don't think it is ever named in the book) was first and the christian religion was later imposed on them by outsiders. Hence Gabe calling the Falk's religion "old Thisby". The fact the scorpio races are still held however shows that christianity has not yet won over the island, as I think the races are very much old Thisby.
How do the goals of the characters shift as race day approaches? How does their relationship with the Scorpio Races change?
Puck realises the races are rooted in tradition, they are about the islanders and the capaill uisce and their connection to Thisby. She now better understands the opposition she is facing for partaking in the races, but her ultimate goal of having to win to get the money to pay for their house doesn't change in the last part of the book. I think it is mainly Sean's goal we see shift. Because even though he still very much wants to win and be able to get Corr, his main goal becomes making sure Puck and Dove survive the races. Puck at one point wishes the race money would be enough to help both herself and Sean, she quickly realises that it just isn't enough money and that thought doesn't really influence her decisions. Luckily sweet Finn placed that forty-five to one bet, he always knew that despite the odds his sister would come through.
Do you have any favorite scenes or quotes from this section?
The last line: "He is slow, and the sea sings to us both, but he returns to me."
How does the ending sit with you? How have Sean and Puck’s arcs taken them from where they were at the beginning of the story to where they are when it ends?
They have found a new footing at the end of the book. During the book the foundation of their lives sort of falls out from under them. but together they find a new place. I do always so fiercely wish that Corr didn't have to get hurt. But I think in the end the bittersweetness of it all makes for a better story.

My fav tsr scene is the dinner, because of course it is, because there’s nothing like a good kitchen convo with your crush while your brothers cause a commotion in the other room, and because even before Sean gets there gabe and Tommy tossing the chicken and Finn mocking puck’s cooking and Tommy and puck dancing while he teases her about Sean is so, so happy and comfortable and it’s that perfect painfully happy tug at your heartstrings moment before everything falls apart
Also for some reason when Tommy and puck are dancing the music I always picture is Andrew bird’s Three White Horses, specifically the, like, middle third that has sorta slidey singing and violin and a slow beat. Not that it makes any sense in the context of the scene or the supposed time period. But nonetheless.

When the hyperfixation takes it takes hard, so continuing the boys and their horses, Tommy Falk and his mare, who is alive and happy on the mainland. Me like wow we really adjusted the colours here to be so much brighter and happier than Ian’s greys and stormy, but yeah it was totally an accident.

"If you trust me on anything, don't risk today. You're ready as you'll ever be," I say. "Everyone else is robbed the extra day, too." She bites her lip in dark frustration, looks at the ground for a moment, and then, like that, she's done. "It is what it is, I reckon. Is Tommy Falk down there?" I don't know. My interests don't lie with Tommy Falk.
