Further adventures in baking: on Sunday the boys were coming round, so I whipped up Tomato Soup Cake from B Dylan Hollis’ essential Baking Yesteryear cookbook (“the best recipes from the 1900s to the 1980s”). I know it sounds odd, but tomato soup cake was a housewife’s staple in the 50s, 60s and 70s (I remember my mother making it when I was a kid), it’s an extremely user-friendly recipe (I’ve made it twice now) and you can’t actually taste the tomato soup (it tastes primarily of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves). Behold: the Biblically Accurate Angel Food Cake!

Today was my Second Annual Bad Idea Potluck. I make things that I know are great but can't convince other people to try, and also things that sound horrifying but I'm morbidly curious. Other creations from today:
Chicken and vegetable aspic:
Ham salad:
Tomato Soup Cake, from Dylan Hollis. Voted "most better than it sounds."
Bean Pie, also from Dylan Hollis:
A savory feta cheesecake, with a recipe from Cato:
And honeyed mushrooms from Apicius:
I also made a couple loaves of bread:
Old Fashioned and Manhattan jello shots (Old Fashioned was too strong but the Manhattan was great):
and a bizarre cocktail called the Death Flip (which was truly great, do recommend if you like that sort of thing).
Extremely fun party; will do again.

Tomato soup cake made using B. Dylan Hollis's cookbook Baking Yesteryear. Quite dense, but tasty for my first ever from-scratch cake.

The finished how-to video that I had to do for my Graphic Communications class that I thought I would also share with everyone. I had a lot of fun with this assignment actually, and it was fun getting to see the reactions of people trying this cake for the first time.
For those wondering it tastes like a spice cake/gingerbread cake, and multiple people finding it actually really good.
