BnHA Chapter 242: SANTA IS REAL
Previously on BnHA: We said farewell to the League of Pliff and were finally reunited with the kids of U.A., an institution which I would just like to point out is so diametrical to the League that they literally took the polar opposite route when choosing their name, and focused only on the acronym. I’m 100% sure U.A. doesn’t even stand for anything. Anyway, so Bakugou and Todoroki went on whirlwind press tour following their ch 219 antics, and the resulting interviews were so disastrous that Aizawa decided to bring in Mt. Lady to give the whole class a crash course in PR 101. Meanwhile All Might scoured Ancestry.com for info on the past users of OFA, and Rat Principal announced that U.A. was going to resume its internship program. This is great news for Deku, who’s been taking his sweet time mastering Blackwhip. Like, we’re not even talking baby steps here so much as little tiny flea steps. Kid’s going to need all the help he can get.
Today on BnHA: Horikoshi targets all of my weak points at once. The My OT3 Academia arc gets off to an incredible, award-winning start with a Christmas party and the announcement of Internships 2: This Time, it’s Compulsory. Highlights include: (1) Kaminari and Mina forcing Bakugou to accept the spirit of Christmas into his heart and soul, (2) Iida rocking a Santa beard, (3) Eri holding a giant sword, (4) Bakugou reminiscing about his internship with Best MIA Jeanist, specifically the part where Jeanist was all “A HERO’S NAME IS REALLY IMPORTANT AND SYMBOLIC AND MEANINGFUL, SO YOU NEED TO THINK VERY CAREFULLY ABOUT IT” and oh my fucking god, and lastly (5) Todoroki inviting Bakugou and Deku to come intern with him at the Endeavor Hero Agency (known for its famous business slogan: “Got Plot?”). It’s like I wished on seventeen different falling stars and they all came true at once. I still can’t even fucking process this. kfkdslgk.
(All comments are my unspoiled reactions from my initial readthrough of the chapter. I did a quick edit for grammar and clarity immediately afterward, and added a few ETAs in the process, but aside from that there are no changes.)
I just got like three excited-seeming asks (I haven’t actually read them yet) in rapidfire succession less than an hour ago, and my dashboard is now filling up with filtered “bnha spoilers” posts, so I took this as a sign that I should read the new chapter ASAP. oh gosh
(ETA:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(1) SAMEEEEEE, and (2) YEEEEEEEEP. listen I’m not religious you guys, but I said “oh my god” so much while reading this chapter that I wouldn’t be surprised if he or she finally answers and is like, “YES!? WHAT IS IT???”)
what new state-of-the-art tomfoolery will our intrepid heroes engage in this week. what novel hijinks will they commence. what frivolous escapades will they embark on this lovely Friday morn?
HOMGAAAHHHHHH
Tumblr media
THE TITLE IS LITERALLY MY FEELINGS RN. MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS TO ME. YES GOD I LOVE IT. I’LL TAKE A DOZEN
okay. so today, September 6th, is officially Christmas. you heard the man and who am I to argue
so we’re opening with a teacher’s meeting! probably about the internships. or the fact that they’re all screwed. I don’t really know what their priorities are nowadays
okay yeah it’s about the internships. also Rat Principal is nested in Aizawa’s scarf for absolutely no reason, and Aizawa is disgruntled about it. heh. tomfoolery already and it’s only the first panel
oh shit, Nezu’s saying it’s now a government requirement. I got so surprised I actually forgot to call him RP
Tumblr media
because ain’t nothing safer than hero internships. if the Basement arc taught us nothing else. it’s that
that was sarcasm in case that’s not coming across. this is clearly a baffling decision. but what are government committees for if not for making baffling decisions I guess
and now Midnight is coming to the same conclusion I was starting to wonder at
Tumblr media
can someone please tell me what the PSC’s goals actually are, then? is this not the same group that recently changed the rules of the provisional license exam so that an even smaller percentage of people would pass? so do you want more heroes or fewer? which is it?
Tumblr media
how do they cope with it? does anyone even have any idea?? it seems to me like they’re just throwing them to the wolves. we have this problem that we have absolutely no idea what to do about, oh I know, let’s toss a bunch of inexperienced kids at it. and hope that none of them gets murdered I guess
anyway so The Sheriff is speculating that the League must have been involved in the Deika situation, and he’s wondering why the PSC is trying so hard to keep it on the dl
oh yeah. friendly reminder that the PSC, thanks to Hawks, probably knows exactly how powerful Tomura and the League have recently become. so they know full well how shark-infested the waters are, and they’re making it mandatory for the kids to all take swimming lessons. nice
lol back when I was brainstorming ideas for future arcs, I seriously thought Horikoshi would have to go out of his way to come up with excuses for the kids to have future encounters with the League, because the school was so concerned with their safety that they wouldn’t allow them to leave the grounds except on rare occasions. well I sure got that one wrong. though to be fair, for once it isn’t U.A. that’s doing the child endangering here
(ETA: and actually, regardless of how insane it is, I do appreciate that when shit inevitably hits the fan again, at least it won’t be U.A.’s fault this time. I’d like to be able to continue rooting for them, and that can be difficult when they keep doing reckless things that needlessly put children in danger. at least this time they’re not the ones driving the Stupid Bus to Bad Decision School.)
Tumblr media
a message to who? the League?? “we’re not scared of you”?? did they seriously not think of all the numerous ways this could backfire?
oh shit Aizawa even went and said the d-word
Tumblr media
well there you have it. the government is drafting teenagers to risk their lives dealing with a crisis they won’t out-and-out admit they’re actually having. on today’s episode of “Oh Hero Society, You’ve Got Problems”
anyway so RP is making the admittedly good point that “we’re fucked and everyone is in terrible danger” is hardly a new state of affairs for them these days, and so they’re all moving on. okay then. good talk. lol. gonna need my damn Christmas fluff after all of that
and also RP is mentioning some other mysterious new program to Aizawa too. I wonder what that could be
(ETA: oh yeah I almost forgot about this. thoughts??)
and now we’re cutting to “several days later” oh my god. it’s really happening. I need a moment here, I’m not even ready. gotta get all my Christmas headcanons lined up here. Satou baking cookies. Kaminari and Sero running around arm in arm singing “JINGLE BELLS, ALL MIGHT SMELLS” over and over at the top of their lungs until Bakugou screams at them to shut up. Mineta debating anyone who will listen over the merits of the song Baby It’s Cold Outside. the naturally Christmas-themed Todoroki savoring this, his time to shine
oh shit, we’re still with the fucking Rat Principal. for fuck’s sake
-- ooh but are they talking about the traitor??
Tumblr media
will this put an end to the “Horikoshi forgot about it” rumors? several people have mentioned this to me here and there (sorry to everyone whose asks I still haven’t answered), but as far as I know, this was part of a fake interview with Horikoshi that was unfortunately circulated around as though it was the real deal. sometimes people are not cool and think it’s fun to take advantage of communities that are enthusiastic and trusting! always fact-check what you read on the internet just to be safe guys
anyway
Tumblr media
so there definitely is one, then. got it
Tumblr media
so the traitor is definitely a student in the hero class, then. got it
sob. I got an ask about the whole Kaminari traitor theory earlier this week, so I’m in the process of doing up a whole long post about that. but the cliff’s notes version is, it’s not him. it’s Hagakure. but I will actually go into detail in the post. it’s been a while since I’ve discussed the traitor thing in depth anyway
so RP is asking All Might if he’s coming back today, and All Might is immediately all “WHY, DID SOMETHING HAPPEN TO MY CHILD, OH GOD IS HE OKAY” which, omg. so much love for this man
and RP is like “geez relax” and OH MY GOD
Tumblr media
[slaps on a paperboy cap and screeches at All Might in a bad cockney accent] TODAY, SIR?? WHY, IT’S CHRISTMAS DAY
OH MY GOD
Tumblr media
I SPOT A GRINCH UP THERE AT THE TOP. SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE VISITED BY THREE GHOSTS FROM VARIOUS DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS
LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE CHILD (GREMLINS ASIDE) IS WEARING A SANTA CLAUS OUTFIT. DID U.A. JUST GIVE THESE OUT FOR FREE
AND IN THE TOP RIGHT NEXT TO SHOUJI, SATOU’S COOKIES! JUST AS THE PROPHECY FORETOLD
I SEE THEY HAVE THE REQUISITE KFC PLATTERS LIKE GOOD JAPANESE CITIZENS. WE SHOULD ADOPT THIS TRADITION HERE IN THE WEST TOO TBH
and last but not least, there are only nineteen children in this panel. it took me forever to figure out who was missing, but pretty sure it’s Iida. Iida where are you. clearly the traitor. certainly not off visiting his brother and the rest of his family, what kind of gullible fool do you take me for
looool
Tumblr media
I love when the characters start to become self-aware that they’re the main characters in a story and that plot things keep happening to them at an unreasonable rate
oh my god they really are wearing the suits. it wasn’t just a title page gimmick like I half-wondered
Tumblr media
ANSWER THE QUESTION, JIROU. INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW. do we even know where she did her first internship?? I suddenly desperately want to learn more about this
(ETA: she interned with Death Arms, the traffic cone-looking guy who notably chewed Deku out for trying to save Kacchan’s life in chapter one. Jirou my hope for you is that you find someone better this time around!)
also Tsuyu is observing that Momo doesn’t have a chair, and I honest-to-god was trying to count how much seating there was in the previous page. it seems to me like the common room got a lot bigger. it keeps adjusting to their needs like the room of requirement in Harry Potter
also does anyone else wish that Jirou would move her cup off of the armrest. IT’S GOING TO SPILL ffff :/ this is who I am at parties
oh shit wait, that was Iida with the beard?? I honestly thought that was Satou. well then Satou is the traitor. -- NOBODY TOUCH THOSE COOKIES!!
anyway so he’s all “well Deku not to bring up the elephant in the room but YOUR PREVIOUS MENTOR DIED A HORRIBLE DEATH so what’s your plan huh”
oh sweet god
Tumblr media
listen, no offense to Centipeder, he seems like a really nice guy, but if I never see his repulsive face again I will count myself lucky
OH FOR FUCK’S
Tumblr media
PLEASE GET RID OF IT IT IS CHRISTMAS!!! here I am trying to have a nice time and!!
god. and like, I feel bad, it’s not his fault he is A GIANT BUG and he has like, fucking mandibles and shit! but I can’t help the fact that my skin is trying to crawl off my body right now, and god but I can barely look at this panel long enough to read the dialogue sob why
(ETA: and now that I’ve forced myself to read it again, this doesn’t even make any sense lol. “we have too much work and not enough help, so we have to pass on you coming back to help us out. ...wait.”)
Tumblr media
I want Iida to like. pat his lap and tell Deku in a big booming voice to cheer up and come sit and tell him what he wants for Christmas. not in a weird way you guys, come on. but just, he looks so forlorn. do you want Santa to bring you some cozy All Might socks
or wait, didn’t he want a PS Vita according to that one omake thing. what the fuck Deku. someone get this kid a Switch
anyway so Deku says that participation is mandatory this time, so the school will handle assignments if the kids aren’t able to find someone
meanwhile Kacchan is in the background accusing Mina of stalking him. I think she is trying to get him to wear his Santa outfit. doin’ god’s work
OH SHIT YOU GUYS I CLICKED TO THE NEXT PAGE, AND THIS. THIS IS MY CHRISTMAS OMFG
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HORIKOSHI YOU DID GET MY LIST! BAKUGOU BEING TROLLED BY HIS SNEAKY DETERMINED FRIENDS AND MANHANDLED INTO A RIDICULOUS GETUP WHILST ANGSTING ABOUT BEST JEANIST BEING MISSING, YESSSSSS. IT’S SO SPECIFIC, I THOUGHT, “SURELY HE WON’T ACTUALLY DO IT,” BUT SANTA IS REAL, EVERYONE
HFMLSDKMGLKLKL!!!!!LKL:DSF
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RED ALERT RED FUCKING ALERT PEOPLE!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!! GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!!
AHHHHHHHHHH HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS
Tumblr media
“MERRY CHRISTMAS MAKESTE HERE’S A WHOLE FUCKING CHAPTER ABOUT KACCHAN’S FUCKING HERO NAME COMPLETE WITH A BEST JEANIST META ON THE TOPIC” mother fucker I need to start reading these chapters with a goddamn life alert and a defibrillator on standby
“your name represents your wish.” ladies and gentlemen, introducing the new number one hero... Number One Hero!
heh. just kidding. “what do you want to become?” this, though. this right fucking here is why I’ve been dying to know what name he’ll actually choose. because it does reflect exactly what Jeanist is saying. whichever name he chooses will be an insight into who he is, and who he is trying to be
and this meta is making me rethink all my chapter 223 feels, and tbh now I’m back to thinking that it’s not going to be Ground Zero, unless he comes up with a cool reason for why that name ties in to the image of the person he wants to be (because right now, that particular name is tied more to the past than to the future). but oh my god, if he does choose the name Kacchan I am going to spontaneously combust. I will fucking do it. I will fucking die from being a dramatic excited bitch
(ETA: because. listen. there is one person who has always looked up to him in spite of everything and has always seen his potential. “in the end, in my mind, you’re the image of victory.” this, to me, is the meaning that the name “Kacchan” would have if he did choose it. it would symbolize him choosing to be his best self.)
Tumblr media
don’t mind me I’m just stanning this child so fucking hard it hurts
(ETA: oh hey, and more feels on the reread because it looks like the reason he’s having this flashback is because he was planning to go back to Jeanist’s agency to do his real internship, and to show him how much he’s grown. but then The Thing happened. Hawks I just want to talk why won’t you answer my calls.)
Tumblr media
Mina and Kaminari are the MVPs of this fucking chapter and I owe them my life omggggg. THEY’RE HERE TO SAVE CHRISTMAS
what are you thinking about there, Best Friend?
Tumblr media
are you thinking about your daddy angst. penny for your thoughts
(ETA: “how can I cheer up my new best friend? I know, I’ll make him a lucrative job offer.” actually that’s a good way to cheer up just about anyone in this day and age, Shouto.)
okay, is there some sort of perverted context to Christmas that I’m totally missing here?? or is Mineta just really into the holiday spirit?
Tumblr media
I feel like I missed something. eh
anyway Mr. Traitor himself is walking out now and HE’S BROUGHT THE CHRISTMAS GOOSE! or turkey! but goose sounded funnier
Tumblr media
of all the things to be shocked about?? “SATOU CAN COOK!?!” like um yes hello you’ve been living with this guy for four months already? like the only thing more ridiculous than this would be, “TOKOYAMI IS A BIRD!?!”
(ETA: like I know baking and cooking are two different things, but in a manga they’re the same thing. fact.)
now someone is making a dramatic entrance! IS IT ERI I WILL DIE!!!! BRING IT
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Tumblr media
I HEREBY SWEAR FEALTY TO THIS PANEL OF AN ADORABLY AND FESTIVELY DRESSED ERI MIXING UP HOLIDAYS WHILE DADZAWA PATIENTLY CORRECTS HER. I WILL PROTECT IT WITH MY LIFE. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS CHAPTER SO THAT I CAN GO DO IT SOME MORE AGAIN, OVER AND OVER AND OVER
Ochako is me
Tumblr media
(ETA: DEMONS OUT! DEMONS IN!! THAT’S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT!! YOU DO THE HOOOOOOOOKEY POKEY.)
and Kiri is out here asking the real questions, but sadly Aizawa says Mirio is spending Christmas with his own class. WELL FINE. I HOPE HE’S EXPERIENCING THE FOMO OF A LIFETIME. HOW DARE HE HAVE OTHER FRIENDS whatever I’m over it
sobbbbb
Tumblr media
WELL HOW MANY FUCKING HOLIDAYS ARE THERE!? CAN SOMEONE HELP A GIRL OUT OR WHAT
oh my god I’m just going to reblog every single Dadzawa panel and none of you can stop me go on and try!!
Tumblr media
impatiently waiting for fanart of Aizawa tucking Eri in and reading her A Visit from St. Nicholas. get on it, fandom
ohhhhhhhhh my goddddddd
Tumblr media
I know it’s not a Christmas song, but I am this close to cranking up “I Gotta Feeling” by the fucking Black Eyed Peas. ya feel
do you guys see him sitting there next to Dadzawa. he finally gave in. Satou is feeding him chicken. his friends will not abandon him to be on the naughty list. motherfucker that’s it. I’m fucking doing it. fill up my cup. mazel tov
lol I don’t even want to click to any more pages because they’re all so happy and it won’t fucking last. :( noooo
Tumblr media
good little boys and girls. noshing on that chicken. Kacchan continuing to be stalked by the Ghost of Christmas Friendship. Tokoyami what even is that. lol and is this their weird way of distributing random gifts. did Sero buy Jirou a scarf. did Deku buy Ochako a freaking All Might plush keychain!? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHAT IS THAT THING AND WHY DOES ERI HAVE IT NOW AND WHY IS SHE MAKING THIS FACE
Tumblr media
-- holy fuck, IT’S A SWORD. oh my god. THEY GAVE THE SEVEN YEAR OLD A FREAKING BUSTER SWORD AND SHE IS FEELING IT YESSSS THIS CHAPTER TRULY IS ALL MY DREAMS COME TRUE
“dad can I keep it.” Aizawa: [not even opening his eyes, all bundled up in his oogie boogie suit] “sure”
so now we’re cutting to afterwards and everyone’s cleaning up and Deku’s using his freakish super strength to lift heavy things impressively while Bakugou continues to stomp around with his hands shoved into his pockets waiting for someone to finally tell him he can go back upstairs
OH???
Tumblr media
motherfucker. are you going to invite them to come intern with you and your dad!!?!?? I know I was all set on Bakugou interning with Miruko just last week, but I TELL YOU WHAT BITCHES, I’M FUCKING FLEXIBLE LIKE THAT
OH SHIT YOU GUYS!!!!
Tumblr media
TODOROKI ARE YOU PLAYING THE OT3 SONG BECAUSE HONEY YOU KNOW THAT’S MY JAM, BRO
OH FUCKING SHIT YESSSSS
Tumblr media
BAKUGOU DO YOU WANT TO INTERN WITH YOUR TWO BEST FRIENDS, EXCUSE ME, HATED ENEMIES. DEKU DO YOU WANT TO INTERN WITH YOUR TWO BEST FRIENDS. AND THE NUMBER ONE. WHO JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE BEST FRIENDS WITH THE NUMBER TWO. WHO JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE BEST FRIENDS WITH TODOROKI “I DIDN’T HAVE A FLASHBACK IN THE LAST ARC BECAUSE WE WERE SAVING IT FOR THIS ONE!” TOUYA? THAT’S RIGHT, IT’S BEST FRIENDS ALL THE WAY DOWN. OH MY GOD
it’s like Horikoshi made a long and detailed list of all of his regrets about the previous internship arc, and then said, “fuck it. do-over”
you guys. I’m all out of cans. we only have can’ts and cannots. I cannot
Christmas fluff. Dadzawa. Bakugou hero name meta. hints that the traitor plot will soon be relevant again. and the motherfucking OT3 of OT3s, MY SONS, MY THREE RESPLENDENT OFFSPRINGS, interning together at the motherfucking Endeavor Hero Agency because Todoroki is the sweetest most considerate angel, and because KNOCK KNOCK, IT’S ME THE PLOT, I’VE COME FOR YOU AGAIN AT LONG LAST AND I VOW TO NEVER LEAVE YOU ALONE AGAIN FROM THIS MOMENT ON
shit, y’all. I don’t know if it’s possible for an arc to become my favorite motherfucking arc only two chapters in, but damned if this sunnuvabitch ain’t trying

———
Summary: Landing your dream job as an advertising exec at Kim Entertainment straight out of college was nothing like you imagined. Mostly due to the fact that your college rival, Jung Hoseok, sits ten feet away from you and never misses an opportunity to make your life a living hell. When a position opens up at the firm to be chief of advertising, you jump at the opportunity, but not without having to go up against Hoseok who is also vying for the position. In a dirty game of deception and betrayal, the last thing you expect to come out of it is love.
Series Masterpost
———
Dear god if you had to sit through another minute of this goddamn staff meeting you were going to kill yourself. That is, if the meeting didn’t bore you to death first.
Ever since the company had come under new management a few months ago, the new manager, Minho, had instituted routine monthly meetings to go over the company’s goals, its relationship with clients, projected sales for the year… you know, all that business mumbo jumbo.
And that was all fine and dandy. In fact, you actually thought the meetings were beneficial… if they were being held once every few months or so, not every damn month of the year. But, like a good employee, you faithfully attended each monthly meeting just to hear that nothing had changed since the last one.
If you were being honest, you had no idea how Minho got so far in his career. He was a nice guy, too nice really, a little awkward, but absolutely no balls below the belt whatsoever. The man couldn’t even tell Barbara, the resident granny (who, frankly, was due to retire ten years ago) that she was taking too long on her breaks. And not the socially acceptable one or two minutes late but more like fifteen minute breaks becoming thirties instead.
Looking past the fact that the man seemed the type to be terrified of his own reflection, you guess you could see why corporate hired him — when it came to marketing, he knew his stuff.
Just as you were beginning to ponder what you would be having for lunch that day, a reuben from the sub shop down the street sounded nice, but then again you had been craving Mexican lately…, you suddenly felt a [not-so-light] kick to your shin.
Jerking in your seat, you looked up to see the smirking man beside you. You were about to retaliate with a scolding and an even harsher kick to the shin but before you even had a chance he was he shushing you with a finger to his plump lips, pointing in the direction of Minho to indicate that you should pay attention.
“… to conclude our meeting today, I have some good news pertaining to the advertising department.“ You perked up a little in your seat, thoroughly intrigued for the first time ever first time that day.
“Corporate wants to change things up a bit in the ad department. That’s why they told me to let you all know that a new position is opening up here to be Chief Advertising Officer. CAO if you will.”
At the silence that ensued in response to his attempt at a ‘joke’, Minho took that as his cue to explain it (which only ever makes things worse).
“Get it… CAO, like CEO and CFO. They’re… they’re acronyms.”
“We get it, it just wasn’t funny.” Calls, you guessed it, Barbara from her seat in the back. The only one bold enough to say what everyone else was thinking because she’s set for life. Minho won’t fire her, a) because of the lack of balls situation mentioned earlier, and b) out of fear of securing a lawsuit for age discrimination on their hands.
At this point, it was just better to let the old bat retire on her own terms — she only had about a year left, two tops.
Minho, poor guy, shakes his head defeatedly, ignoring Barb’s comment in favor of finishing his announcement. Chuckling awkwardly, he begins again, “Right… Ah- as I was saying, a new position is opening up to be Chief of Advertising. Corporate wants things to be a little more streamlined in the ad department. They’re thinking a head of advertising position will achieve that. Anyone can apply so if you think you have the necessary skills, by all means have at it. But unless anyone has any further comments or concerns, this meeting’s adjourned.”
Usually you’re already up and on your feet before Minho can say ‘any further questions’ but today you’re left stewing in your seat. As a member of the advertising team here at Kim Entertainment you couldn’t be happier in your current position. But now that this opportunity had been presented to you, you couldn’t turn it away. More creative freedom and a higher salary? There was no way in hell you weren’t getting this promotion.
But with opportunities always come challenges. And you don’t know how you managed to forget one of the biggest challenges standing in your way ever since you started working here a year ago.
“I actually have a question, if you don’t mind.”
God, even the sound of his voice irritates the mother-loving shit out of you.
“Yes, Hoseok, go ahead.” Minho says, slowing in his collection of the papers on his desk.
Jung. Fucking. Hoseok.
“So what differentiates the Chief of Advertising from a regular person on the ad committee? And salary? What’s that like?”
“Of course, yes the perks of the position! You can expect a higher salary. It’s not set and generally depends on your experience and skill set, but it will be higher nonetheless. But some of the other benefits more freedom to work on your own commissions or projects, and you have final say in what ideas get pushed and what doesn’t.”
Everyone and everything that stood in your way could suck your left tit as far as you were concerned — you were getting this job. And fortunately, you would get to bury Jung’s ass in the process, a win-win situation for you.
“And, the interview process. How does that work? Is it just the standard interview and a ‘Congratulations, you got the job’ or a 'Sorry, better luck next time?’ or are they looking for something more?” He asks, arms folded and leaning back in his chair, his head tilted slightly in inquiry.
Despite not wanting to admit it, the man did ask good questions. You had been wondering this yourself.
“Oh! How could I forget! Yes there’s going to be a standard interview but in addition to that they also want to see an example of your own work. A personal project, if you will.”
A personal project? So in other words, they want to see what you can do when you are given full creative control over a project. This works out great because this has been exactly what you wanted to do for a while now. You couldn’t wait until the members of your team let you take the reigns on a project. Sure it was nice having a team to bounce ideas off of but sometimes, the feeling of being shot down for an idea you felt strongly for was disheartening.
“Come see me in my office so I can give you the full rundown of what corporate expects to see from you for this position.” He says looking at Hoseok before adding, “And that goes for anyone else who plans on applying. But for now, meeting adjourned. Let’s keep up the good work guys. I like what I’m seeing, great improvement from last month.”
Literally nothing had changed from last month, but that is the last thing on your mind right now, as it is too preoccupied with figuring out what you are going to do for your personal project. And also, how you are going to make it better than Hoseok’s as he is clearly also interested in the position.
As everyone begins to file out of the conference room, some chatting excitedly with each other, others uninterested in a job offer that has nothing to do with them, you follow suit. As you make the trek back to your desk, a pep in your step while you run over all the possible ideas you have for your personal project, Park Jimin falls into step with you.
He bumps his shoulder against yours as you walk, alerting you of his presence, rather violently, you might add.
“Big opportunity right? I have no doubt you’re applying for it. Or am I wrong?”
You give him a look. “You bet your cute ass I’m applying. I’d be an idiot to pass up this opportunity. I just have to figure out a way to outdo that asshole Hoseok and I’m set.”
Jimin flashes you a grin saying, “Aww, you think my ass is cute?” He briefly glances back at his derriere, giving himself a pleased smile before he turns back to you. “I’ve been doing this new thing where I incorporate squats into my workouts. They’re killer on leg day but I guess they’re finally paying off. Anyways, what have you got against that guy? Seriously, he’s not a bad dude from what I can tell.”
“Yeah, to you maybe!” you exclaim.
By this time you have reached the break room and Jimin reaches for the coffee pot to pour himself a mug while you watch him, thoroughly annoyed with the direction the conversation has taken. He offers you a cup but you shake your head, leaning against the counter with a sigh.
“Him and I… we have history. Goes back to my college days and I’d rather not relive those thank you very much.”
Jimin turns around to face you, leaning his back against the counter as well as he takes a sip of his coffee. You giggle when he grimaces, presumably because he forgot to add in the appropriate amount of sugar and creamer to the bitter cup of black coffee.
His next statement, however, wipes the grin right off your face.
“Ooh, a romantic tragedy. Tell me more. What, did he dump you for another girl and now you’ve got some sort of vendetta against him? Spicy. Tell me more.”
“What? No! Absolutely not. First of all, I’ve never dated nor will I ever date that asshole. And second of all, why couldn’t I have been the one dumping him?”
Jimin shrugs, muttering into his mug as he takes a sip, “I guess it could’ve gone that way too. But it’s easier to imagine him dumping you because… and don’t take this the wrong way… you’re you.”
Okay ouch. You’re offended to say the least. “And what is that supposed to mean?!?” You explode. You were doing that a lot today. Jimin must be in the mood for mischief.
“I tell her not to take it the wrong way and what does she do, she takes it the wrong way,” he mutters into his coffee mug, almost as if he’s talking more to himself than to you.
“Listen, no offense, but you didn’t seem like the type to be popular throughout college, or high school, or… at all really. You’ve got this quirky, kinda awkward, vibe going on with you. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cute but you don’t strike me as the type to be the ‘life of the party’.” Despite the fact that you’re glaring daggers into the side of his head right now, he elaborates. Unfortunately for you (and fortunately for Jimin), looks can’t kill.
“…Hoseok on the other hand radiates 'I was popular my entire life’ type of energy. I was thinking maybe you two hooked up or even dated for a bit but he dumped you to avoid jeopardizing his social status. Again, no offense to you or anything. If anything I’m offending him, because he was the asshole in this hypothetical situation.“
"You’ve put lots of thought into this haven’t you?” You say incredulously, truly astounded by how elaborate his story is.
Jimin takes a sip of his coffee (now appropriately sweetened) and sighs dramatically. “Sadly, yes. I’m afraid it’s kept me up into the wee hours of the morning for several nights now. So please, do me a favor and tell me what happened. I’m right aren’t I?”
Try as you might to deny it Jimin was right. At least partially. The part about about you and Hoseok dating or hooking up or whatever definitely wasn’t true, but is is true that the two of you ran in different social circles. You were more likely to be caught with your head in a textbook than at a party, where Hoseok seemed to have spent at least 40% of his time in college.
With a sigh you relent, dropping your guarded stance and admitting your defeat.
"Ok, fine, you might be onto something.” Jimin’s eyes widen excitedly and you’re quick to elaborate before he can get anymore ideas.
“Hoseok and I were never together in any way, thank god, but it is true that we were at completely separate ends of the social spectrum.”
Jimin smirks proudly but you pointedly ignore him.
“And… there was a brief moment in time where we were actually friends, or acquaintances, I guess? But that didn’t last long.”
“Friends? The two of you?”
“Very briefly. We stopped being friends when I found out he was a gigantic asshole. But I don’t want to talk about it anymore. Let’s get back to talking about that promotion. I was thinking– ”
“Promotion? You mean the one I’m going to get?”
At the sound of a voice that didn’t come from one of the two of you, you and Jimin snap your head around to see Hoseok standing near the doorway of the breakroom.
Unfortunately for you the universe had not answered your calls for a stress free day void of having to interact with the devil in a suit standing a couple feet away from you. Better luck tomorrow.
“Ew, have you just been standing there like a creep listening to our conversation this entire time?” you scowl out at him.
Hoseok shakes his head, hands in his pants pockets and a sly smirk on his face as approaches. He walks past the both of you, not paying you any mind, as he stops at the coffee machine and pours himself a cup.
“No. Trust me, I have better things to do than eavesdrop on your conversations. I just happened to come in and I heard the two of you talking about the new job offer opening up.” He’s not even looking at you, the pretentious prick, too focused on stirring in the appropriate amount of creamer into his cup.
“Want some advice?”
“I don’t ” you bite back.
He ignores you. “Hey, I’m just looking out for you. I don’t want you to get your feelings hurt when I get the job so I wouldn’t even bother applying if I were you.”
He’s still stirring that stupid cup of coffee and the fact that he’s not even looking at you while he insults you, like you’re not even worth the time of day, is extremely infuriating.
At this point you are seething, but you try your very best to not to go off on him as much as you want to. Working with him on a daily was already difficult but now that you two are vying for the same position? Oh, things are only about to get a hell of a lot worse.
“Thanks for your concern, but if you’re so sure that you’ve got this job already then you won’t mind if I go ahead and apply then. Since you don’t consider me to be any competition then it should be fine, right? Or did I read this all wrong and you’re actually worried I might get the job over you?”
Finally finished meddling with his coffee, he licks the red stirrer clean with his tongue and discards it with a flick into the trash can nearby. Mug in hand he spins around and leans against the counter, flashing a smug grin your way. And you’d be lying if you said that it didn’t affect you at least a smidgen. His smile was stunning, smugness to it and all. So what, he’s attractive. You still hated the man’s guts.
“I tried to warn you so I don’t wanna see any tears when I get it. But I suggest you get used to calling me 'Chief’ from now on. Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?”
And before you can respond he’s already brushing past you and heading back to his desk, no doubt thoroughly enjoying the fact that he got the last word in while you’re left to gape like a fish out of water.
There’s a moment of silence while Jimin just stares at you seething at Hoseok’s retreating form disappearing into the main room. You almost forgot he was there at all until he finally speaks.
“God, the sexual tension between you two is strong. Can’t you guys just fuck already and end… whatever this is…?”
“Jimin!” you exclaim at him. “What you just witnessed was not sexual tension. It was just passionate mutual hate for each other.”
“Uh huh, sure.”
“You know what, fuck you.”
Jimin’s airy laugh floods your hearing and you wonder not for the first time how someone so mischievous could look so innocent.
“Listen, I just need your support with this, can I trust you to give me that?”
“Right, about that. I was thinking of applying for the position too.”
You give him an incredulous look. He can’t be serious.
“Jimin, you’re in accounting.”
“So? You heard the boss man. He said anyone could apply!”
“Yes, anyone with the right credentials. Do you have a degree in marketing or advertising or any other remotely related field? No you don’t. Come on Jimin, I don’t have time for this right now. I’ve already got enough on my plate dealing with Hoseok, I don’t need to add you to the mix.”
“Relax, I’m just kidding. My department can’t lose me. I’m the best accountant they have. And trust me, you have my full support. I have no doubt you’ll get the job.”
You give Jimin a bright smile and thank him dearly. Despite being a pain in your ass at times, he really was a great coworker and friend at that. He’s one of the few people always reassuring you when you’re nervous about a pitch or an idea you have in mind.
Still, you couldn’t help but feel apprehensive. You hated to admit it but Hoseok was good at his job. If there was anyone who could beat you out of this promotion it was him, not to mention you have no idea who else was considering applying for the position as well. But you were determined. You had to get this job. And you’d bury Hoseok and whoever else decided to go up against you to get it. But first things first… you needed a project idea.

Digital Footprints: Put YOUR stamp on it.
Tumblr media
It’s Monday morning. A new day. Another week of school. You turn off your alarm and head straight over to Twitter. “Monday already !!!!!!! (Crying emoji X10) Can’t w8 to get back into bed”. Your phone pings. It’s Lizzie. Your BFF. She never lets you down. Except not today it seems. “Soz bbe. Sooooo ill. Grab any hw sheets for me plzzzz (blowing kiss emoji) xxxx”. Mum shouts up the stairs “Are you getting up at any point today? The dog needs walking and you need to take your brother to school!” You slam your phone into the duvet, roll your eyes and take a deep breath. You’re annoyed and the day has only just begun. Toast in one hand and dragging your brother out the door by the other, you smile at the postman. “Morning”, you say. Knowing full well he loses your packages ALL THE TIME.  Be nice mum always tells you. Manners cost nothing.
You get to school. The mean girls stare you down as you walk to your English lesson. You try to look cool. You tell yourself that one day they’ll take you in as one of their own, but maybe today just isn’t that day. You find your seat, unpack your books, your pencil case, tucking your phone under your hideous plaid skirt. Silly really. Illuminating skirts aren’t exactly the school uniform market’s latest innovation. You’re top of your class. You know you shouldn’t be scrolling through Instagram in a lesson, but everyone else does, and you for sure don’t want to stick out any more than what you already do. You get A’s in nearly every assignment and you compete in nearly every extra-curriculum sport in the school, but you can’t help but fantasise about that Instagram #gymbod. Your parents are immensely proud, and your teachers? You can’t do enough to please them. You love school. Never too shy to raise your hand in class, never too eager to stand in front of the WHOLE of year 11 to deliver a speech about the school’s litter policy, and never too embarrassed to admit to your friends that you’ve not even kissed a boy.
It’s lunchtime. You and your best friends of 12 years gather around the canteen table. They tell you about their exciting weekends. How their heart throb boyfriends distracted them from getting any work done. How they got ridiculously drunk at a family party and how their mum grounded them for coming home at 10:33 – 3 minutes later than expected. And you? You just listen. For the most part, you spend your break and lunch times talking in the hockey team WhatsApp group chat. They’re a laugh. Sometimes you tell the girls about your boring weekend, or even fluff it up slightly by telling them you actually got out of your pyjamas. They would never believe you. You’re well and truly the plain Jane out of the bunch. The new boy in your year asks if the seat next to you is taken. The girls think he’s a nerd but you think he’s quite cute. You say no. The girls sigh as if to say “you’re such a loser”, but you don’t care. You have to pretend you don’t know his name, that you don’t have an unhealthy obsession with checking his Facebook. You know his cat goes by the name of Clive, but you pretend you don’t know that. You know he plays for the local rugby team, but you’re not supposed to know that either. You don’t know that his birthday is the 6th of June, and most importantly, you must NOT show any bitterness towards his girlfriend of 3 years.
Home time at last. You’re loosening your tie as you get closer to the front door, eager to jump straight back into bed. PING. It’s the girls group chat. “House (girl dancing emoji) Sat nite. 8.30. B there or b (square emoji)”. NOOO. You promised mum you’d have a film night with her. Saturday night rolls around. You’ve been plotting all week how you could get away with this one, but she’s a mum. They find out everything. Not this time. You divert from the party situation. It’s now a revision sleepover situation with the girls. You ask to go and of course you’re allowed. School first, partying second. It’s 10pm. You’re having the best time but you assured mum updates on the revision sesh. So, as promised, you load up Instagram stories. On your second Instagram account, obviously. By second, you mean the only Instagram account your mum thinks exists, right? You locate the photo album named “revision”. You browse this until you find the most colourful, most mind-map-ful, most hard working-esque photo you can find. And voila! A little later, in comes a text from mum. “Wonderful stuff. Looks like you’re really working hard. See you in the morning :)” . Little does she know, over on what might as well scream @yourerliar101, several stories and photos were posted of your amazing night with your besties. In the morning it seems the party was a huge success. Tweets and Instagrams raving about the night – “Can’t believe Josh taught every1 to do the (worm emoji) (cry laughing emoji)”. “Had the best nite EVAAAAAA (tongue out emoji)”. “Me and the gals last night!!!!!!! (cocktail emoji) (heart eye emoji) #lovethem”.
Sound familiar? Well, this may not be too dissimilar to a day in the life of your late teenage years. (Millennials, this one is for you!) Through this artificial account, we learn that in just 24 hours, you are likely to perform a variety of different roles. You’re a reliable friend and a caring sibling. You’re also studious, a potential lover and occasionally a liar. But sometimes it’s for the best, right? So, quite literally, how can these personalities become transparent online?
Just like this teenager, the average social media user, whatever you may define this to be, can be traced online. Social media can speak volumes about a person. Not just what they get up to on the weekend, but the finer details. For example, they’re obsession with their house rabbits, how much they can’t stand their boss, and more recently, how they’ve jumped on-board Facebook’s latest bandwagon, “rate my meal”.
Social media, such as Instagram and Twitter allow me to present the most favourable, or sometimes least favourable, versions of myself.  If you were to rewind to old school Alex on Twitter, you would definitely find tweets containing homophones, such as “u”, with my favourite acronym, still to this day, being “lol” – only used sarcastically of course. As well as this, I was a sucker for, and admittedly still am, a cluster of exaggerated punctuation, but mostly “!!!!!!!”.  Although Crystal (2008) claims that young users of social media, especially in SMS, will use abbreviations such as “GTGMIW” (Got to go, mum is watching), this wasn’t necessarily the case when I was growing up with social media. Nowadays, it’s all about filtering what you put online. This screening allows you to hide your online activity, for example by disguising your wild Friday night shenanigans by deselecting your mum from viewing your Snapchat story. Or, creating a separate Instagram just for your friends’ entertainment. You can be as embarrassing as you like and you won’t have 800 followers judging you.
Goffman (1974) refers to this online social interaction as “audience segregation”. We ultimately filter aspects of our lives from certain people in order to curate and maintain a multitude of personalities depending on the context we are in. So, for me, this means presenting a sensible, family-friendly Alex on Facebook, an interesting and good-humoured Alex on Twitter, and an exciting, adventurous Alex on Instagram. Let’s take a look…
Tumblr media
So, 2017 A-Level Results day. Here, we’ve got a definite exaggerated use of punctuation and excitable capitalisation. Not only this, I clearly thought the use of the extreme smiley emoji X2 wasn’t enough, resulting in going the extra mile with a #. What am I doing here? Looking back on this, this for sure could have been Facebook worthy. This could have bagged me a gushing army of comments from overjoyed family members bursting with pride. But why Twitter? My friends would see this. People I know, but don’t really know, would see this. Those 23 likes - those 23 people thought this was worthy of a tweet and that’s all that mattered. In this moment, I. Was. Clever.
Evidently, over the years, I desired to either be desperately funny or desperately embarrassing. You decide this one.
Tumblr media
Would I have found any of these tweets to be bland if I weren’t to use homophones? Or exaggerated punctuation? Or hashtags? Were these attempts for me to moan about how busy my life was? Did I want sympathy or just someone to relate to?
Here’s Instagram Alex. Holidaying in the Dominican Republic, Lanzarote and Greece. Eating Wagamamas at least once a week. Being overly obsessed with a French Bulldog, attending fancy-dress parties and the occasional festival. This is what I choose to share online. Not very exciting, but a fairly accurate representation of me. You can guarantee nearly every other caption incorporates an excessive use of emoticons, sarcasm and most definitely a little too much of this “!!!!!”.
Tumblr media
What do these linguistic features allow me to achieve?
If I asked a complete stranger to read my Twitter, browse my Facebook and scroll through my Instagram, they would probably argue that my presence across these social media platforms doesn’t really differ that greatly. You could say that for the most part, I present the most authentic version of myself online. I’m not one to shy away from no-make up selfies, or tell the world about how groggy I feel after waking up from that 3- hour nap, or in fact how much I moan about going to my 20 hours a week part-time kitchen job.
However, for some people, this is not the case. Without audience segregation there would be a context collapse. Employees would start saying “lmao” when their boss asks for a coffee. Students would use inappropriate emoticons to sign of their “sorry I can’t make it to the lecture today, I’m ill” email. Parents would text, or even worse, tag you in their FB status announcing “#DINNERISREADY” instead of actually calling you down for dinner, and we definitely don’t want to live in a world full of parents who hashtag EVERYTHING.
So, what can we learn from this?
For both professional and personal matters, it’s important to present yourself online in a way that is consistent. You don’t want people to think you have 25 different personalities. Keep this for the real-life stuff. No one likes a catfish. After all, if 70% of employers screen candidates’ social media before they consider hiring, it’s important to avoid branding yourself as a fool online. Keep those drunken night out videos OFFLINE and maybe consider deleting those 2012 “Like for a rate <3” cringey Facebook statuses. However, don’t go erasing yourself offline completely in fear that you’ll never get a decent job. After all, 47% of employers argue that having an online presence allows them to learn a bit about who they’re hiring. So, be open, but not TOO open. Be YOU. However, if “you” means writing Facebook statuses about how much you love playing Angry Birds at work, or how you’re easily persuaded to go clubbing on a Monday night, maybe it’s best you don’t share the real you online. Be mindful about the digital footprint trail you’re leaving behind.

What Is A MILF? The Surprising Truths & Thoughts Behind Its Meaning
‘MILF’ is code for Mother I’d Like To Fuck. But there’s really much, much more to it. Here’s a unique take on what is a MILF exactly.
If you’re a dude you’ve probably used this term more times than you care to admit. Walking down the street with your boy, you see an unusually attractive older lady and you’re like, ‘Bro, check out that MILF.’ But if you’re wondering, what is a MILF, it’s time to educate yourself.
What is a MILF?
It’s just one of those words we like to say. It rolls off the tongue like sweet honey… Sometimes we say it for humor. Other times the word MILF is just… definitive. The truth. There’s even a male equivalent—‘DILF’, which is code for Dad I’d Like To Fuck.
Primarily, being a MILF/DILF means you’re older but still look remarkably attractive. MILF is sort of similar to the term cougar, which is a woman who is independent, older, and likes her meat younger.
But MILF/DILF are different in that those terms suggest you have parenting responsibilities. Which could also suggest you’re in a committed relationship… [Read: How to make an older woman fall in love with you]
Which is why the term MILF feels kind of taboo
Let’s take it back…
#1 ‘You low-down Mother Fuckers.’
– US soldier to his draft board, 1911
#2 ‘You see this cat, Shaft is a bad mother
(Shut your mouth)
But I’m talking about Shaft
(Then we can dig it)’
– Isaac Hayes in his song ‘Shaft’, 1971
Another controversial term: ‘Mother fucker’ was used as early as the late 19th century. But throughout the years, mother fucker was softened into minced oaths such as:
– Motherfugger
– Mother for you
– MOFO
The cool thing about this word is that you can’t say it, and even when you do you’re expected to make it cryptic. Unless you really don’t give a fuck and want to make your feelings clear… *‘Mother fucker, I dare ya! NO, I double dare ya!’*.
The funny thing is most people don’t think about ‘mother fucker’ in terms of actually having sex with a mother. Counter-intuitively, they associate it with awesomeness OR sometimes with offensiveness. [Read: What’s in it for the older woman dating the younger man?]
‘That movie was mother fucking amazing.’
Or
‘Yeah, well, fuck you, you dumb mother fucker.’
THEN the internet hit and these things happened…
– Lots and lots of porn
– Lots of sexualized material on TV/movies/media
– Even more sex on social media, which popularized acronyms for sex like: mofo, ons, dtf, bdsm, bbw…
– Lots of new dating sites/apps that made dating/sex a whole different ballgame
– Everything became a candidate for ‘LOL cool’, e.g. Stiffler’s mum in American Pie
This is why I think the word MILF is sort of an evolution of the phrase mother fucker. However, it’s also a very unique and ultra-modern word. Let’s take a deeper dive into its meaning…
#1 Milf is short-code. People need short codes to speedily distinguish between categories of things in the world. MILF generally makes it clear that the mentioned person is an older woman.
If I’m with a buddy on a crowded street and want to let them know about an older lady with a gorgeous look, I’ll say, ‘MILF dead ahead, 8 out of 10.’ He knows to skip over the faces under 30 and search for the hot 35+ year old. It’s simply a matter of critical timing. [Read: You guide to scoring yourself a MILF]
#2 A MILF is the wet dream. Teenagers going through puberty may be unable to attract or connect with girls their own age. For example, an adolescent who spends too much time watching porn and doesn’t have good social skills…
Due to his inexperience, he might naturally be drawn to a more maternal, nurturing figure—thinking she will mother him up unconditionally and acceptingly.
#3 A MILF is emotionally developed. Maybe you’re bored of club life and people with stringy attention spans. You want more depth. You can find depth in young people, but many higher order character traits take a lifetime to build. And it’s a never-ending journey. So, some people will consider a person to be a MILF if they meet the emotional connection criteria.
#4 A MILF is very cute or hot. There’s a somewhat universal attractiveness level spectrum, whether or not we like to admit it. In other words, people can generally agree on whether someone looks attractive or not and roughly what level of attractive they look, even if they’re not specifically ‘their type.’
This might sound controversial, but if you’re honest with yourself you may agree *ever heard the phrase ‘she’s out of his league’?*.
Things like facial details symmetry and body shape all factor in. And with that said, some people age better than others and stay looking attractive for longer. Which means that they stay looking remarkably attractive for longer. Note that the word GILF *for grandmother* isn’t popular, because there’s less chances a woman will stay looking hot at that stage of her life *although there are many exceptions*. [Read: The 30 traits of hot women that men love]
#5 The MILF is a new kind of woman. Women had massive inequality pre-world wars. Post-world wars, they slowly gained more rights. Today they’re more on an equal footing with men societally than they have been in any other time. In some arenas, such as within education, they outperform guys. It’s no longer a given that a woman’s role in society is to get married and to have children by a particular age.
Customs are unclear—more open-ended. Women have more independence and make their own sexual decisions with less social repercussions. Words like MILF pop into existence in times like this. People aren’t so sure that an older lady is probably someone else’s wife or that she won’t be DTF. [Read: The meaning of DTF and signs she’s feeling it]
#6 The MILF is straight to the point. Being messed around by a 22-year-old Colombian chick who doesn’t know whether she’s coming or going? One of the appeals of MILFs is that they don’t play games with you.
It’s a popular belief that if a MILF doesn’t feel you she won’t take your info or reply to your messages. But if she is into you she really means to follow through and may even initiate things, because she’s confident enough in her own skin and knows what she wants *she probably also works out if you’re the real deal faster*. [Read: The pros and cons of dating a woman in control]
#7 A MILF might not be a mother. I’ve never been walking with a friend and we see a hot older lady and my friend says: ‘That is either a hot MILF or a hot cougar.’ He probably doesn’t care if she’s mothered offspring. What’s important is that she looks like she could mother offspring.
We’re usually attracted to people that look capable of passing on genes to create healthy offspring. When we notice curvaceous hips or a buxom chest, this is us looking out for signs of genetic health. The hips don’t lie.
#8 The 20-year-old MILF? Of course, a woman in her 20s could be a MILF. But you often hear ‘baby mother’ used more in that situation. A MILF is a bit more like a fine wine… something that takes a given amount of time to develop properly.
Though I saw a girl who was 22 and had a toddler. It was the first time I’d dated a mother, and I definitely used MILF more than a few times.
#9 The 30-35 MILF. A popular MILF imagery is the ‘dirty 30s’ MILF who is sexually ravenous or a recently divorced single mum. She’s rediscovering who she is and is going yolo. She may be dating several guys at the same time and looking for completely no strings attached sex. [Read: 17 important guidelines for NSA sex]
#10 The conqueror’s trophy MILF. To get with one, you may need to be direct. You should also know what you want. She’s seen too much in her time to be won over by timidity. To add to this, she’s not a commonly ‘available’ demography. Think about it this way: the market tends to value things based on supply and demand. So, if something is in high demand, but seems to be in relatively short supply, it’s going to increase in value.
There are simply fewer older and hot women still dating compared to younger women. So, this literally makes MILFs a hot product. And hunters of MILFs get a sense of self-validation from knowing they won something difficult to get. It’s competition.
Say you’re 20, and a MILF you come across is 45. Chances are it’s less socially acceptable for her to get with you. There’s more in your way in terms of natural social obstacles. So, if you proceed to get her despite this, it says something about your tenacity and abilities.
#11 A MILF can have dirty affairs. I think being a parent tends to make you mature sooner, both emotionally and spiritually, whatever your age. This is because of the higher amount responsibility you bear. When a MILF does anything she does it properly. That means a sweeping, mature, lusty affair. By comparison, a ‘baby mother’ is more likely to bring drama and angry ex-lovers who carry guns. This is simply because younger people generally have less life experience than older folk.
By the time you’re in your 30s you’ll have more perspective on some of life’s absurdities. So, a MILF is more likely to have emotional control and able to keep a dirty secret. [Read: 15 dirty ways to have the sexiest rough sex ever]
#12 A MILF understands sex and sexuality. Think of a hot 20-year-old girl… It’s not hard to get the feeling that her body as it is just popped into existence one day and she woke up with an uber-slim waste line and a perky bubble butt. She didn’t go to the gym for it. She might even have a diet of cigarettes and Coca-Cola.
The same thing is likely to be the case with that girl’s sense of her own sexuality. She’s not matured fully yet. She doesn’t yet know what she likes and enjoys, or what she really appreciates in a partner.
A MILF’s sexuality is practiced. It’s deep, subtle, knowing. She truly appreciates sexuality to a level that shocks you. A MILF may dress modestly and show her sexuality in subtle ways. Her sexuality may seem to emanate from her sleekly and stylishly. However, when you make a moment of intense eye contact with a MILF, there’s a knowingness there.
Don’t get me wrong, people can be impulsive and naïve whatever their age, but wisdom and skills generally tend to form with time.
[Read: Cougar dating: 10 rules to dating an older woman]
Hunters like to explore. They know that variety is the spice of life. Understanding what is a MILF and the slightly taboo off-limits temptation can only be addressed in a socially acceptable way through code.

Targrin, Interlude: The Sidearm
(As promised, here’s the second half of this week’s pair of Targrin stories! This one’s about how Chaz got the pistol they use as an offhand weapon. I’ll likely share links to the Google Docs of these after I’ve posted all of them, so you can see the stories in their original formatting!)

The Sidearm
1328AE, Doctor Maakinen’s Home, Rata Sum
(A day after the events of Targrin, Act 3: Scars)
Chaz shot up from the guest room bed with a startled grunt, taking heaving, shuddering breaths as they glanced around the darkened room. Another damn nightmare, nothing new there, they thought to themselves as they caught their breath. Bleary-eyed, they groped about for their glasses, hands still shaking.
Their ears flicked and their fur stood on end as they heard a low, grumbling sound from… somewhere in the room. “Mn… who… who’s there?!” they gasped, finally feeling their glasses and grasping at them desparately, putting them on with shaky paws.
No response, save for the grumbling, which was getting more ominous. The charr timidly got up, but stayed on their bed, leaning forwards and getting on their hands and knees, as they followed the source of the sound, which was steadily getting louder.
“I said who’s there?!” they barked, in a hushed, shaky tone. Still no response. “This isn’t funny, come on now.”
Shivering, they flicked their ears some more, listening. A clank, followed by a scratching sound, like metal dragging against stone. Anticipating the sound made it worse as they barely stifled a surprised yelp into a horrified squeak, not wanting to wake Doctor Maakinen, who was sleeping in the room across the hall. Looking for the source of the sound, they looked to the darkest corner of the room, and heard a slow grinding… before a pair of glowing, yellow eyes turned around and seemingly glared right at Chaz
The scream of terror immediately jerked Maakinen awake from her sleep. “…Chaz? Chaz, dear, are you okay?”
“HE’S HERE, MOM!” Chaz yelped, “STAY AWAY!”
Maakinen sounded confused, and increasingly worried “What? Who’s there? It’s not the Inquest is it?! Hang on, I’m coming!”
“NO, DON’T-” Before Chaz could finish their sentence, Maakinen charged into the room, and flicked the lights on. Maakinen was still in her sleepwear, holding a rather hefty-looking pistol.
“Where is he?!” Maakinen barked, “I’ll… “ She looked around the room, and her ear flicked as she heard the grinding sound. Both she and Chaz glanced over to the corner of the room, where a small, dome-shaped golem with two glowing yellow sensor crystals hovered about, came to a halt and looked up at the pair.
“Hello-Doctor-Maakinen. The-room-is-now-free-of-dander. Hello-guest-and-dander-source-Chaz-Tarbound. You-are-shedding-more-than-usual-today.”
Maakinen heaved a sigh of relief, lifting her finger off the trigger of the hefty pistol. “I am so sorry about that, I forgot to tell you the Dynamics boffins gave me a house-cleaning golem. He’s called Scrublord, and… are you okay?”
Chaz looked positively stunned as they saw Maakinen holding the gun. “I… you…” they buried their head in their hands, clearly embarassed. “Burn me, I am so sorry for waking you up at this hour, mom. I just… had a bad dream, I woke up, and saw… yellow eyes. I thought he’d come to get me.”
“Who, Scrublord?” Maakinen tilted her head. “I think this is the first time you- Oh. Ohhhh… you mean the Separatist who… eugh. “ She facepalmed. “I really should have told you about Scrublord ahead of time. C’mere, it’s okay.” The older asura climbed up onto the bed, sitting down beside Chaz, putting her gun aside and putting a hand on their shoulder. “It’s alright, progeny. You’re safe here.”
Chaz hiccuped a bit and sniffled, but nodded, smiling. “I guess it was kind of silly of me to assume that some lousy Separatist would know where I’d gone, huh?”
“Don’t beat yourself up over it. I might not know my psychiatry, but I’m more than familiar with the way the mind can play tricks on a person, and I imagine yours isn’t in the best of states right now.”
“Yeah… Can I just say something, though?”
“Of course, dear, what is it?”
“You… Just, when I saw you come through the door holding that gun…”
“Oh, sorry if I startled you.”
“No, no, it’s just… I’m impressed. You heard me yelling, and your first instinct was to charge in to save the day, I… thanks, mom.”
“Nahhhh, it’s nothing, dear. I used to do that all the time when I was keeping you safe from the Inquest. Remember that one guy who came in like he wanted to ask you a few questions?”
“Oh yeah, and then I pointed out all the scalpels and stuff he had on him. Man, you went ballistic on his ass.”
“Figuratively and literally.”
Chaz looked down at the pistol on the bed. It was different from the one they’d seen Maakinen toting in the past, this one looked… sleeker, with a more curved grip. “Woah… since when did you have that gun? I always remembered you having that chunky glyphic number on standby for the Inquest.”
Maakinen grinned. “Oh, this?” She picked the gun up, holding it out for Chaz to see. “This is from about… three years back. Pact standard issue, I was allowed to hold onto mine once I returned home.”
“Ahh, I…” Chaz perked their ears up and looked back at Maakinen, eyes wide. “Wait. You were in the Pact?”
“Oh, I… might have neglected to tell you.” Maakinen chuckled nervously. “I was on the front lines out in Orr as a field medic. I guess I didn’t want you worrying about me while you were busy working with the Tar warband. I’m sorry, I should have said something sooner-”
Chaz gave their mom a pat on the back, smiling. “It’s alright, mom. I appreciate the concern. And I mean, you’re still here, so… Are you doing alright? Being a medic out on the front lines, you must have seen some awful stuff.”
“Oh yes, terrible, horrific things. Those Risen were something else, and the wounds they inflicted…” She shuddered. “I suppose it’s fortunate that I was stationed with Psychiatrist Aada, one of my krewemates. Between the two of us we were able to keep the other troops’ morale high, and she was able to help me keep it together when the nature of my work started to get too much for me to handle.”
Chaz listened intently to the story. “Aada’s the one you mentioned yesterday, yes?”
Maakinen nodded. “I still owe her for helping me out, so I’m going to be doing legwork for her, getting in touch with people from other races. Aada’s hoping to collaborate with psychiatrists across Tyria, to gain a better understanding of how each race handles the ailments of the mind.”
“So what ‘official’ name are the Curie Krewe gonna be rocking for this latest endeavour?”
“Well we’re still deciding on that part. After yesterday I thought about suggesting the name ‘Chaz Krewe’ after finding out what you’ve been through…”
“Mom…”
“Buuuut I don’t want to embarass you like that, so I’ll keep that one to myself. The other krewemates are workshopping some names right now. Aada suggested ‘Emayy’.”
“Emayy? That’s an interesting name.”
“It’s a phonetic spelling of the acronym MA - Short for Mental Ailments. We might go for MI - that’s Emeye - for Mental Illness instead…”
“How long do you expect it’ll take to decide on a name and found the krewe this time?”
“Ha, ha, very funny.” Maakinen snarked, before glancing about a bit and leaning in closer to whisper. “We’re just stalling while we wait for the next fiscal period to kick off so we can apply for more generous funding.”
“Right on,” Chaz nodded.
“Anything else you wanted to know about my work on the front lines?”
“Well… that gun… did you-”
“Several Risen. Got one of those bastards right between the eyes, that was satisfying.”
“Wow. That gun’s huge compared to you, I’m surprised your wrist isn’t all messed up with the kickback.”
“Well, I’ve a few tricks up my sleeve. See, this gun isn’t actually loaded. It’s more like a tool for me to focus illusory magic through. That said, it is fully functional.” She picked it up, and offered it to Chaz, grip first. “You want it? Looks like it’d fit your hands just fine”
“I-- what?” Chaz was blindsided. “Just like that?”
“I’d… been thinking about it for a while. Swords are more my style, you know that, but after what you told me yesterday, about the ambush… I just couldn’t bear to think of you going back out there without having something for your own defense.”
Chaz looked at the gun, unsure, but eventually they gently took it, and got a feel for its weight. “You know, not many moms would just up and give their kid a gun like that.”
“Well, not many asura moms have a fluffy progeny, eh dear?” Maakinen chuckled
“Point,” Chaz conceded. They set the gun to the side, and hugged Maakinen. “Thank you. I promise to only use it if I absolutely need to.”
“Of course. You always were extra cautious, even in the fahrar, if what your primus told me was right.”
Chaz chuckled. “I suppose that’s true.” A thought suddenly struck them, and they asked, “Hey, mom? When you were out in Orr… Did you happen to see any interesting-looking war machines?”
“As a matter of fact I did. Our camp was given a shipment of automated turrets for defense. Curious things, they looked all for the world as if Iron Legion had built them, save for one little difference.”
“Oh?” Chaz tilted their head. “What would that be?”
“Just underneath the barrels of the turrets…” Maakinen tried to visualise the turrets with her hands, pointing at an imagined spot, “There was a crystal array. These things were brilliant, they could lead moving targets and mowed down Risen with frightening accuracy. Almost like a fusion of charr might and… asura… precisionnnn…” she looked up at Chaz, a little smirk growing across her face. “Those were yours, weren’t they?”
The charr laughed, smiling sweetly and hugging their mom. “I’m just glad to know Tar warband’s weaponry made it onto the battlefield. A lot of work went into those, I mostly helped calibrate the crystals.”
Maakinen hugged Chaz back. “Now I’m doubly sorry I never told you that I was serving with the Pact!”
“Haha, it’s okay, mom, it’s okay. You can rest proud knowing your fluffy progeny was fighting alongside you, in a manner of speaking.”
“I suppose that’s true, dear,” Maakinen chuckled, yawning a bit. “…What hour is it, anyway? We should both try and get back to sleep, I’ve got a lot of work to do tomorrow, and you, progeny, need all the rest you can get after what you’ve been through.”
“I can’t make any promises, but I’ll try, mom,” Chaz nodded. “Sorry again for waking you up like that. I’ll try and remember about the cleaning golem next time.”
“I think the lil bugger needs a bit of re-programming and a change of sensor crystals, so as not to spook you from now on. What do you think, Scrublord?”
“Doctor-Maakinen. You-are-covered-in-dander.”
“Damn straight I am.”

[Outside Keeper’s Cottage with Robert and Victim]
MR. SHIFTY: *On the phone with a presumably shady contact because Robert’s not allowed to have friends* #Nostalgia
VICTIM: Hey! Just being nosy! What are you up to?
ROBERT: Nearly getting caught doing something shady apparently.
VICTIM: Oh, well at least I almost caught you outside my house because the audience needs to be blatantly reminded that you’re living here now because I, a known Plot Victim, decided that’s what was best.
ROBERT: Thanks for pointing that out *Aaron Face*
VICTIM: Hey, I came up with a cute acronym for your mopey Aaron moments to try and get the fans to like me more!
ROBERT: Seriously?
VICTIM: Yeah, MAG, Massive Aaron Grump! You having one now?
ROBERT: Nope, I’m having a MAD, Massive Aaron Dilemma, because I bought these festival tickets back before the Plot destroyed us and now I don’t know what to do about them.
VICTIM: Oh hey, I’m working this festival with the Diddy Diner, you know that business I still apparently run even though it’s not been mentioned in ages. You are soooo not a festival person!
ROBERT: Yeah, I would hate every minute of it but, as everyone is aware, I would do literally anything for Aaron so...and now, well, they’re here.
VICTIM: But you’ve split up?! #CaptainObvious
ROBERT: Cheers for the reminder...I think even the most casual of viewers are aware of that particular Plot Point at this stage. No need to rub it in. But should I ask him anyway? It seems so unfair to the fans to deprive them of this potentially super fluffy scenario. They’ve had so much taken from them already.
VICTIM: What’s the worst that could happen? #Whiplash (FANDOM: Who are you these days?!?! Do you even know from scene to scene?) - No -
ROBERT: Well he could think I’m a stalker and I think everyone got enough of that nonsense during the Finn/Kasim Plot that no one speaks of anymore. Adam and Paddy were all telling me stay far far away yesterday even though it’s like they’ve only just remembered that Aaron exists now that I’m out of the picture. Plus, you, you hypocrite, telling me to forget about him and return to my selfish and self serving ways the other day!
VICTIM: Uhhh...Plot Victim here! Besides, when have you ever bothered to listen to anyone else...besides maybe Aaron.
ROBERT: *I think that was a green light Face* *The Plot is still going to screw me over somehow with this isn’t it Face*
[The Portacabin with Aaron and Robert]
ROBERT: *Knock Knock Knock* - this feels weird and no one is answering so I guess I’ll just go in -
AARON: Did you actually just knock?
ROBERT: Well I wasn’t sure if you wanted me here?
AARON: *Matching elbow patches on display..well sort of...they’re the closest to elbow patches Aaron has ever gotten and it’s adorable okay* Well you do work here because even though we’re not together, apparently we’re still inseparable. Also...you just came in anyway?! *Laughs*
*Awkward Silence*
ROBERT: Right, well, now that your bodyguard isn’t here to speak for you, can I ask you about your eye? Are you fighting?
AARON: No...I’m talking to you and for once, now that we’re over, we’re not fighting. Hey maybe we can trick the Plot if we say we’re over but we’re not…
ROBERT: That’ll never work, besides, we’re over and we still can’t have an #ActualConversation
AARON: I have a Boxing Plot okay. I was sweaty the other day, the fans really enjoyed it. So...why are you here anyway? Did you actually come to do some work?
ROBERT: Of course not, the Plot has no need for me to do my job right now. No, I’m here cause I got these tickets in the mail.
AARON: The festival. You said you couldn’t think of anything worse…
ROBERT: Well I can now #TheHellPlot #Relatable #SpeakingForTheFandom Well you can still go if you want but I thought I’d awkwardly ask you if I could come with you, which you know wouldn’t be weird at all. Separate tents of course cause you know if we had one we’d probably end up cuddling or you know...our other favorite thing…
AARON: Yeah...I mean...yeah you can come, suppose... The fans would like it. (FANDOM: You’re gonna snatch this away from us later aren’t you because there was no festival in the spoilers) Well I better go and get back to my Boxing Plot.
ROBERT: Everyone’s told me to be selfish, but I still care and want you to be careful.
AARON: I’m fine Robert. Uncle Zak is training me.
ROBERT: Oh, thanks for that tidbit of information. Might come in handy.
AARON: *Nods* *Awkwardly leaves*
ROBERT: *Why aren’t we back together Face*
[The Cafe with Robert and Zak]
ROBERT: I’ve seen Aaron’s eye, and I’m not just talking about that scene we were both in yesterday. Anyway, I don’t like it.
ZAK: Did you two break up? I swear I heard that somewhere.
ROBERT: Yeah, but until the Plot won’t let me anymore, I still care.
ZAK: You could just cheer him on. I feel like your fans would like that.
ROBERT: Probably, but they also want Aaron to be safe almost as much as I do.
ZAK: But exercise is a good thing!
ROBERT: Zak, let me catch you up on Aaron’s Self Harm Plots over the years, one of them involving running himself into the ground and hospital. There’s a bit of a pattern here and I would hate to see him repeat that.
ZAK: That’s not gonna happen, right?
ROBERT: Well if it does, it’s on you!
ZAK: *I don’t want that kind of responsibility Face*
[The Woolpack with Aaron, Zak and Victim]
VICTIM: Robert said you were going to festival, Aaron! I’m putting on my Shipping crown again for the moment. Remember when I was super invested in keeping you guys together. The fans really loved me then.
AARON: Miss that version of you too. But...yeah...Robert got the tickets and awkwardly asked me out and I said yes cause the audience needs to know that I haven’t written him off completely.
VICTIM: Well, I will of course be there, giving you free snacks! What could be better?
AARON: I can’t eat your muck. I’m training! Right Zak? #NoObsessiveTendenciesHere
ZAK: The odd dirty burger won’t hurt you I suppose.
VICTIM: Stop mocking my business that everyone forgot about!!! *Victim leaves*
AARON: Great, now that she’s gone, we can go. Can we go now, please! #NoObsessiveTendenciesHere
ZAK: Can’t, I’m just going to eat so I can stall for a bit for...reasons I can’t discuss.
[The Woolpack with Aaron, Zak and Victim]
VICTIM: Can I get you some carbs?
AARON: No I’m good. (FANDOM: But carbs, like toast, are your favorite! And you’re literally always eating in every scene and now you’re turning down food...Is something wrong...besides you know...the Plot?) So...Zak, I can see that you’re totally stalling. What’s up? Are you bored of this Plot already?
ZAK: Yeah, that’s it. Let’s go with that. #NotAGoodLiar
AARON: Hmm..yeah...I don’t believe you at all. The Plot’s behind this somehow isn’t it?
ZAK: *Get’s out script from scene with Robert* Well, it’s just sometimes you tend to overdo it like that Self Harm Plot you had with the running…
AARON: *Grab’s script* Are you just reading Robert’s lines?
ZAK: Maybe? But he really does have your best interests at heart. I’m sure of it.
AARON: *Conflicted Face*
**Meanwhile, shady things are going on at Home Farm and that’s probably no coincidence** #IfYouExpectTheWorstOfSomeoneThat’sWhatYou’llGet #MrShifty
[The Woolpack with Robert, Sam, Charity and Aaron]
SAM: Have you seen Lydia?
ROBERT: She’s not in my immediate circle or related to my unfortunate Plot, so I have no idea who that is. (FANDOM: Stop crushing all of our Lydia/Robert dream scenarios!)
*Robert and Charity Banter* - for the fans - (FANDOM: We’ll take anything these days)
*Aaron enters*
ROBERT: Charity, while you’re doing your literal job so quit complaining, can you also get Aaron a pint? I mean...er...umm...if you want one that is. Damn, I hate that I’m all unsure around you now. #AreWeBackTogetherYet
AARON: No, I’m not eating or drinking today. No one should be concerned. Speaking of being concerned...I hear you don’t want me running or training.
ROBERT: *Confused Face* I don’t think we had that scene...I would have remembered...I treasure every moment with you.
AARON: No, you had it with Zak and now he’s quit, which is actually fine because now I can just go push myself as hard as I want because it’s my business and my business alone. (Fandom: *Concerned Face*)
ROBERT: *Concerned Face* *Soft Aaron Voice* I care, Aaron.
AARON: Yeah, well this was supposed to be my Plot, alright? So stop interfering! And take your festival tickets back. I’m not going! (FANDOM: We knew it! Stop depriving us of all of the cute stuff!)
ROBERT: *Sad Face* - thanks Plot - *Maybe the fans will write fanfic about what could have been* - I should really catch up on my ao3 reading -
[Side of the road with Aaron and Cain and surprisingly not the boot of Cain’s car]
*Cain probably takes too much pleasure cutting Aaron off on his run with his car*
AARON: What did you do that for?
CAIN: Could ask you the same question? I thought this was a Boxing Plot. That’s what the Dingle Newsletter said...well I think...it might have had grease stains over half the words by the time I bothered to look at it because well...it’s the Dingle Newsletter and I don’t care do I?
AARON: Yeah, well that’s over because Zak quit after Robert went and interfered in my Plot and told Zak I’d overdo it and he doesn’t have a mind of his own so now I’m running again.
CAIN: Well, I mean I can’t believe I’m going to say this and use his first name when I do, but it’s not like Robert doesn’t have good reason to worry.
AARON: What am I supposed to do? Just sit in a rocking chair for the rest of my life? Would that make you happy?
CAIN: Yeah maybe, and the fans would probably be all for it too, though they’d probably want to wrap you in bubble wrap first and then drape you under Sugden’s insane butterfly blanket while he feeds you a healthy diet of toast for the rest of your life but...yeah. I have got another idea though. Get in the car.
AARON: Why?
CAIN: We’re gonna go intersect with another Plot, come on. It’ll be fun and I’ll even let you ride in the passenger side and not the boot.
AARON: *He might mean that, I better obey Face*
[The Woods with Aaron, Cain, Debbie and Sarah]
*Blah Blah Blah other Plot where Sarah is absolutely correct in thinking that Debbie is not fun*
DEBBIE: *Rare Smile* I’m going to shoot you until I know you’re having a good time
*Cain and Aaron come out dressed in camouflage shooting paintball guns for context otherwise that line is really weird*
*Aaron is smiling. Debbie is smiling* #TheApocalypseIsComing (cc. @WoolieWeekly)
[Outside the Woolpack with Victim and Rebecca]
VICTIM: Hey, how’s the Plot I’m not overly involved in?
REBECCA: Fine, Dad’s doing okay...this time...but there’s a bunch of shady stuff going on around Home Farm. Possibly due to my sister’s birth father’s brother being around? Maybe? I don’t even know anymore.
VICTIM: Wow, that sounds confusing. Glad I’m not a part of that Plot. But are you sure you should be this confused in your state?
REBECCA: I’m always confused. Anyway, I thought, and this should actually make the fans happy, which is rare for one of my actions, that I might move back into Home Farm after Dad gets out of the hospital. #PleaseStayThere
VICTIM: Did you call the police about any of this?
REBECCA: Of course not, but I just thought of a former Plot Device that might be able to help me out. Us Plot Devices should stick together!
[The Woolpack with Robert, Rebecca and Victim]
*Victim and Robert are talking* *Rebecca enters* *Victim drops Robert as fast as she does personalities in this Plot and runs straight to Rebecca*
VICTIM: Hey did you get a hold of that Plot Device?
REBECCA: Yep! Now I just have to figure how to do all of the work I can’t cope with because I’m literally a failure at everything when it comes to the business.
VICTIM: Oh! I have a great idea! Robert! You should absolutely go and help Rebecca out up at Home Farm. You know, that place that used to represent all of the things you convinced yourself you wanted before you met Aaron and he changed everything! Also, BABY! - wow it’s been a while - Yep! She’s pregnant! Did you hear that, she’s carrying your child! I thought maybe you and the audience might have forgotten that fact because we clearly have for the past three weeks. But yeah, BABY!
ROBERT: *Please don’t drag me into this Face*
REBECCA: I can handle it on my own I swear. Please just let me sensible for the fans!
VICTIM: But why do that when you can drag Robert into it?!
REBECCA: Because it might actually kill my dad if I got Robert involved. (FANDOM: Hmmmm #Sacrifices)
ROBERT: For the record, I’m not getting involved in this at all. You all wanted me to be selfish and self serving again, so now I’ve got far too much shady stuff to coordinate to be bothering with the likes of you.
REBECCA: See, that settles it! Wait...I’m sure I should be paying more attention to something here...hmmm. Oh well.
[The Woods with Aaron, Cain, Debbie and Sarah]
*Dingle paintball banter and fun* *Aaron and Debbie still smiling* - for the fans -
AARON: I’m not actually tired you know. This is nowhere near pushing it hard for me.
CAIN: Well my Plot hasn’t had me working out like yours!
AARON: Yeah, well maybe you should find one that does. *Smiling* *Laughing* #WinterIsComing
CAIN: This is good though right?
AARON: Yeah, even you’re having fun.
CAIN: Don’t tell anyone, right? I’ve got a reputation to maintain...you know, while I’m also dating the local vicar.
AARON: Preferred Coira, but your secret’s safe with me. This was a great idea Debbie had.
CAIN: Well it’s not just for Sarah...
AARON: I am fine you know #StopLyingYouLiar
CAIN: Yeah and you want it to stay that way. Just, if you’re going to keep up with this Boxing Plot of yours, don’t overdo it and don’t make it everything.
AARON: I wasn’t. #StopLyingYouLiar
CAIN: Look, I know we’ve all been completely ignoring you for months but now the Plot has finally decided all us Dingles can interact with you. You should enjoy that while it lasts. There are lots of other things to do besides boxing and running and whatever other potentially self destructive ideas you have in mind, and there are certainly a ton of us in the village to do them with.
AARON: *Smiles* *Thanks for remembering I exist Face*

overworked dad
seventeen’s mingyu
word count: 2594 synopsis: Mingyu is so excited about you coming home with your newborn son that he forgets to take care of himself. a/n: if you read this lil thing i wrote, thank you so much ♡ (i also posted this on aff lmao) (the title sucks :( im sorry ay)
“Ready to go home today, ma’am?” You were cradling your newborn son when one of your nurses came in with a wheelchair. “You and your husband must be excited to bring home little Minjae, huh?”
You smiled at her. “Actually, I think my husband is more excited than me,” you joked. It wasn’t really a joke; throughout your whole pregnancy, Mingyu was always the one reading up on parenting books and some nights you had to pry the books out of his hands so that he can finally get some sleep. (Also, you could’ve sworn he bought those books way before you two even began discussing having children.)
“I believe that’s how it always is with young parents,” the nurse told you. “The fathers are always more excited, at least from the patients I’ve taken care of here.” She offered to take your son from you. “Since you’re still in your hospital gown, I’ll take care of him while you go change. You have already signed all the forms for release, right?”
“Yes, and thank you.” You handed Minjae to her and slowly got up from your hospital bed. You slipped on your slippers, grabbed the small pile of clothes Mingyu left for you last night, and went into the bathroom inside the room to change.
When you came out of the bathroom, you saw that your son was now in Mingyu’s arms, who came in while you were changing. “Hey,” he looked up from Minjae and smiled at you. “I can’t believe you two are coming home today.” Mingyu looked back down to Minjae. “Are you ready to go home, Minjae? Hm?”
“You’re almost as cute as him, Mingyu.” You said to him.
“No way, jagi. I’m nowhere close; Minjae is a million times cuter than me.” But Mingyu still smiled at your compliment.
“Are you both ready to go?” A different nurse came in while you were checking for anything you might have forgotten.
“Yes, we are,” you told her. You carefully took your baby out of Mingyu’s arms and sat down onto the wheelchair the other nurse brought in. “You ready, Mingyu?”
He picked up the overnight bag you prepared for your hospital stay and a few other things. “Yeah. I’ll go out and bring the car up to the front, okay?” He nodded to you and the nurse and left first.
“I hope you don’t mind having to be on a wheelchair on your way out of here, ma’am.” The nurse said as she began to push you and Minjae out of the room.
“Oh, not at all. I don’t even think I would be able to walk that far without falling, honestly. Plus, I don’t think my husband would want me to walk anyway.”
She laughed. “Yes, your husband seems like a protective type.”
After a couple of minutes, the three of you arrived at the main entrance of the hospital, Mingyu waiting for you right outside. Once the nurse stopped the wheelchair right at the door of the car, he grabbed Minjae from you and carefully placed him into his car seat (which Mingyu bought and installed literally only when you had a suspicion that you were pregnant). After making sure he was still sleeping soundly, Mingyu put his left arm around your waist and helped you off the wheelchair.
“Mingyu, I can stand up just fine.” You teased.
“Jagi, we can’t take any risks here.” He helped you into the car and even put on your seatbelt for you. “And I don’t want you to exert any effort doing these things, okay?”
“I could’ve put on my seatbelt myself though…,” you muttered. Before he closed the door you waved to the nurse, “Thank you!” She waved back before wheeling the wheelchair into the hospital again.
Mingyu got into the car after a few moments and put the gear into drive. Before he stepped on the gas, he turned back to you. “Have I already told you how excited I am that you two are finally coming home?”
You chuckled. “Yes, Mingyu. I think you’ve been saying that even before we left for the hospital.”
“Yeah, well, I missed you a lot, jagi.” He turned back around and started the drive home.
---
That evening, you and Mingyu ate the dinner he prepared, watching the baby monitor showing your newborn son, who was sleeping.
“Newborns really do sleep all day, huh?” You said.
Mingyu, with his (apparently) extensive knowledge on everything about babies and parenting, agreed with you. “Of course, jagi. All newborn babies really do are cry, sleep, eat, pee, and poop. C-S-E-P squared.”
You raised your eyebrow at him. “You made up an acronym?”
“Yeah, do you like it?” He smiled hopefully at you.
“It’s the same amount of syllables as the actual words, though?” You teased.
“Jagi, let me have my acronym.” The two of you went back to eating, but you heard a little “I thought the acronym was genius…” while Mingyu was finishing his food.
Once you both finished eating, Mingyu grabbed both of your plates and washed them. “Jagi, now that you and Minjae are finally home I can finally show off how amazing I am at being a new dad.”
“Mm, I see you’re starting off with washing the dishes that I always did before today?”
He gave you a look. “Stop teasing me, jagi.” He wiped down the sink and turned back to you. “Let’s go.”
Mingyu washing the dishes wasn’t the only weird thing he had done that night. When you two went to the bathroom to do your nightly routines, he literally took your toothbrush and put the toothpaste on it himself. “Are you going to brush my teeth for me too?” You jokingly asked.
“Do you need me to?!” He asked eagerly. “If it’s too strenuous for you, I can do it. Say ‘Ah,’ jagi.”
“Mingyu, I was just kidding.” You took your toothbrush from him and started brushing your teeth.
“Jagi, i’m serious. If you ever need anything, I will do it. I don’t need you overworking yourself.” He started to brush his teeth too.
You rinsed your mouth and put your toothbrush back. “I don’t need you overworking yourself too, Mingyu.”
---
One Week Later
Your first week back home was relatively calm, and all of that was thanks to Mingyu. While you were incredibly grateful, you were also concerned for him. Every time Minjae woke up fussy but not hungry in the middle of the night, Mingyu insisted that you stay in bed while he worked on calming him down. Every time you went to take a shower, Mingyu was in there with Minjae’s crib right outside to make sure to catch you if you suddenly collapsed. Every time you even let out one tiny sign that you needed something (food, your phone, a book, literally anything), he was quick to go get it for you instead of you getting it yourself. You realized that you haven’t seen Mingyu sleep (every night you would fall asleep before him); actually, you haven’t even seen him do anything that wasn’t for you or for the baby.
Into your second week at home, you decided that if you didn’t say anything, Mingyu would continue to overwork himself like this. While you were breastfeeding Minjae in your bed one morning, Mingyu came in with a breakfast tray for you. “Good morning, jagi.” He kissed your cheek before setting down the tray in the space next to you.
“Mingyu, you don’t need to keep bringing breakfast in bed for me.” You lightly scolded him. “I can go into the dining room and eat with you, okay?”
“Jagi, it’s fine. Is Minjae done feeding?” You looked down and saw that your son had fallen asleep while feeding. Mingyu took him and brought him back to his crib while you fixed your clothes before taking the tray.
“It is not fine, Mingyu. Come on, I’ll bring this tray back to the dining room and we can eat together.”
“No, no, no, jagi.” He took the tray from you. “If you insist that we eat together, then I’ll take it back.” He left the room and you followed after turning on the baby monitor.
Mingyu was resetting the table with your food when you came in and sat down on the seat across from him. You noticed that while Mingyu prepared a big breakfast for you, he only made a few pancakes for himself.
“Mingyu, why do you only have pancakes for breakfast?” You asked him while he poured some maple syrup over them.
“Don’t worry about me, jagi and eat up.” You just stared at him. “Hey, if you don’t start eating yourself, I’m going to feed you.”
“You should be eating more than just pancakes,” you mumbled before digging into your own breakfast.
Within a few minutes, Mingyu had finished his pancakes and got up to get a drink. “I’ll go get you some water.” When he came back and sat down again, you decided now was the time to bring up his problem.
“Mingyu, are you tired?”
“What? No, jagi.”
“Are you sure? Because ever since we came home, I have never seen you sleep.” You had a concerned look on your face.
“Ey, jagi, come on. What do you mean you’ve never seen me sleep? I sleep every night right next to you.”
“Yes, but you’re always up in the middle of the night to take care of Minjae instead of letting me do it. You need to rest, Mingyu.”
“I am full of energy from taking care of Minjae in the middle of the night, okay? I don’t need to have a good night’s sleep.”
“You. Need. Sleep.” You said to him. Right when you finished speaking, Mingyu yawned. “Ha! See? You need to sleep.”
“I don’t need to sleep! I promised you when you were pregnant I would make sure you had a blissful first few months with Minjae! How can I make sure you’re relaxed if I’m wasting my time sleeping? I’m not tired, jagi! That yawn you saw me do just now? That was only because you said ‘sleep.’” Mingyu defended himself.
“I will not be relaxed if you suddenly faint on me because you’re overworking yourself, okay? Please, Mingyu, I don’t want you to do this to yourself.”
“Jagi…,” You could tell he wanted to keep arguing that he didn’t need to rest.
“Mingyu, you need to sleep. Let’s go.” You got up, grabbed his hand and led him back into your bedroom.
“Hey, you didn’t even finish your food…” You ignored him.
You pushed him down onto the bed once you two got there. “Woah jagi… you’re so dominant right now.” Mingyu joked.
You placed the blanket over him. “Go to sleep.”
“Ey, jagi. Come on, I already told you I don’t need to sleep.” You pushed him down again when he tried to sit up.
“Mingyu, I can see your eye bags, alright? Stop denying that you’re not tired and go to sleep.” You stood there with your arms across your chest.
He smiled up at you. “Jagi, you’re so cute standing there, forcing me to go to sleep.”
“Be quiet and go to sleep. I’m not leaving until you’re actually sleeping.”
“Well, if you’re not leaving until I’m actually sleeping, can you join me here? You know I can’t sleep without you with me.”
“Then how did you sleep when I was in the hospital?”
“I didn’t.”
“What?!”
“Just kidding!” Mingyu laughed. “Come here, jagi.”
You climbed into bed next to him and he put his arm around you. “Go to sleep, okay?” You told him as he pulled you to him. “I appreciate all that you’re doing for me and Minjae, but you need to think about yourself too. I don’t want you to forget about yourself, Mingyu.”
He kissed your forehead. “Alright, jagi.” He pulled you even closer. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you were worrying over me worrying over you. I’ll do better.”
“You better.” You kissed him softly before he closed his eyes.
Not even two minutes had passed when Mingyu fell into a deep sleep, which made you realize all the more how tired your husband was from taking care of everything. You stayed in bed with him for a few more minutes before getting up and going over to your son’s crib.
“Minjae-ya, you’re going to be in the living room with me today, okay? Let’s let your daddy sleep for a while.” You unlocked the wheels of his crib and carefully pushed it to the living room, so as not to wake him up as well.
You spent the day scrolling through your different social media accounts, responding to all the greetings you were still getting about Minjae, and watching any random show that came on TV. Every few hours Minjae would wake up for either a feeding or diaper change.
Around 6PM, Mingyu came in while you were feeding Minjae. “Yah, why didn’t you wake me up, jagi? I wasted the whole day now.” He pouted at you.
You smiled at his cute expression. “A day spent resting is not a day that was wasted. How was your sleep?” He plopped down on the seat next to you and kissed Minjae’s head.
“You were right; I did need to sleep.” You gave him an ‘I-told-you-so’ look. “Of course you were right.” He looked over to the TV. “What are you watching?”
“To be honest, I stopped paying attention to what I was watching an hour ago.” You looked down at Minjae, who was still feeding. “How can I when this cutie is right here?”
“You’re right.” Mingyu put his arm around you. “Our Minjae is way more entertaining than any show on TV.”
The two of you spent a while just staring at your son before Mingyu spoke up again. “You know, the reason I’ve been doing all this stuff… overworking myself and all that, is because I’m just so excited that we’re finally parents? Like I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since we started dating.”
“Mingyu, we were only in high school when we started dating.”
“Yes, and that was only four years ago, okay?”
You gave him a teasing smile. “How did you even know we were going to get married and start a family together then, huh?”
“I just knew, jagi.” He kissed your cheek. “Ever since I saw you, as a sophomore, walk into my math class, where there were only upperclassmen.”
“I didn’t even know you then.”
“Well, I had already fallen in love with you.” He looked fondly at you.
You felt your cheeks flush. Of course, even after four years of being together, Mingyu would have this effect on you. “Stop staring at me like that.”
“Like what?” Now he stared in a comical way, making you laugh. “I love you, jagi.” Mingyu kissed you before looking down to your son again. “You too, Minjae. I love you. So much that I’m willing to stay up for hours on end just to make sure you and your mommy are okay.”
“Minjae, don’t listen to your daddy. He shouldn’t be overworking himself anyway.”
“Your mommy is wrong. As long as you are overworking for a good cause, then it’s okay.”
You two went back and forth like this to your newborn son about overworking and its dangers (you)/benefits (Mingyu), even though all he was focused on was the milk that he was currently getting from you.

(Photo: Jack Dykinga / U.S. Department of Agriculture)
Our latest Freakonomics Radio episode is called “Evolution, Accelerated.” (You can subscribe to the podcast at Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or elsewhere, get the RSS feed, or listen via the media player above.)
A breakthrough in genetic technology has given humans more power than ever to change nature. It could help eliminate hunger and disease; it could also lead to the sort of dystopia we used to only read about in sci-fi novels. So what happens next?
Below is a transcript of the episode, modified for your reading pleasure. For more information on the people and ideas in the episode, see the links at the bottom of this post.

Today we’re bringing you an episode from our archives called “Evolution, Accelerated.” The story is a fascinating one, and, like most good stories, it has continued to develop. You can find our updates at the bottom of this post.

Jennifer DOUDNA: I remember standing in my kitchen cooking dinner for my son and I suddenly just burst out laughing. It was this joyful thought of, “Isn’t it crazy that nature has come up with this incredible little machine?”
The history of science is full of accidental discoveries. Penicillin, perhaps most famously, but also gunpowder and nuclear fission. It makes sense, doesn’t it? Because you don’t know what you don’t know; you don’t always know what you’re looking for, or at. Sometimes you’ve just got a curious mind.
DOUDNA: The research project that led to this technology was really a curiosity-driven project.
Jennifer Doudna is a professor of chemistry and biology at the University of California, Berkeley.
DOUDNA: And I’ve had a longtime interest in understanding fundamental biology. In particular, aspects of genetic control and the way that evolution has come up with creative ways to regulate the expression of information in cells.
Stephen J. DUBNER: When you first heard the phrase CRISPR — just describe that moment, what your understanding of it was and what you initially envisioned it facilitating.
DOUDNA: When I first heard the acronym CRISPR, this was from a conversation with Jill Banfield, I had no idea what that was.
This was in 2006. Banfield, also a Berkeley scientist, had been studying bacteria that grow in toxic environments.
DOUDNA: She was looking at bugs that grow in old mine shafts — and these pools of water that build up in in old mines that are often very acidic or they have various kinds of metallic contaminants — to figure out what bugs are growing there and how are they surviving.
The key to their survival was called CRISPR: “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats.”
DOUDNA: Say that five times fast.
Banfield thought the bacteria had developed a sort of pattern-based immune system to protect themselves. But exactly how it worked was a puzzle. To help solve it, she recruited Doudna.
DOUDNA: We ended up spending several afternoons where Jill was showing me her D.N.A. sequencing data from bacteria and explaining what these sequences were.
What began as a casual conversation about an obscure subject grew to consume Doudna for years. Finally, she had a breakthrough.
DOUDNA: And I suddenly just burst out laughing.
Today on Freakonomics Radio: the mind-blowing discovery that’s already changing medicine, and more; the implications of that boundless change; and: if you think the genetic revolution is still years away — you should think again.
*      *      *
DUBNER: So, congratulations on your future Nobel Prize.
DOUDNA: [Laughs]
Jennifer Doudna hasn’t won the Nobel Prize yet, but it’s hard to imagine she won’t. We’ll go back to when she started working with Jill Banfield. Doudna learned that CRIPSRs were D.N.A. sequences stored in the cells of bacteria.
DOUDNA: You can think about it like a genetic vaccination card. It’s a way that cells store information in the form of D.N.A. from viruses to use in the future to protect cells if that virus should show up again in the cell.
But how did it work? And what might it mean if scientists could figure it out? In 2011, having already studied CRISPR for a few years, Doudna attended a microbiology conference in Puerto Rico. There, she met Emmanuelle Charpentier, then a researcher at Umeå University in Sweden. Charpentier was researching a “mystery protein” that she felt was the key to CRISPR. She and Doudna began a long-running collaboration.
DOUDNA: We were working together to understand the molecular basis. In other words, “What are the molecules that allow bacteria to find and destroy viral D.N.A.?” That was the question that we set out to address.
And in the course of that research …
DOUDNA: And in the course of that research we figured out that a particular protein — it has a name, Cas9 — is programmable by the cell.
A protein that can be programmed to fight viruses? You can start to see where this is going.
DOUDNA: The amazing thing that this Cas9 protein does is it works like a pair of scissors. It literally grabs onto the D.N.A. and cuts it at that place, at that precise place.
They thought: if nature could program this Cas9 protein to precisely edit D.N.A., why couldn’t they?
DOUDNA: It turns out that when this is transplanted into animal or plant cells — or human cells — it’s possible to introduce changes to the D.N.A. very precisely, and that’s how the technology fundamentally works.
Then came the night at home, cooking dinner for her son, when she burst out in joyful laughter at the sheer wonder — and the massive possibilities.
DOUDNA: “Isn’t it crazy that nature has come up with this incredible little machine?” So there was that moment, and then that morphed into a growing recognition that this technology was going to be very impactful in many different areas of science.
Doudna, together with Charpentier, and several other colleagues, wrote up their research and, on June 8, 2012, formally submitted it to the journal Science. It was published 20 days later. Suddenly, the world knew that the CRISPR-Cas9 system could be harnessed as a new gene-editing tool.
Linda WERTHEIMER in a clip from Weekend Edition Saturday: A new kind of genetic engineering is revolutionizing scientific research.
Melissa BLOCK in a clip from All Things Considered: Scientists think CRISPR could launch a new era in biology and medicine.
Norah O’DONNELL in a clip from C.B.S. This Morning: CRISPR could help us rid us of diseases like cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy — and even H.I.V. and cancer.
Jennifer Doudna had spent her career largely cloistered in laboratories. She didn’t have a high-profile background.
DOUDNA: I grew up in a small town in Hawaii.
Suddenly she was a scientific super-hero.
Gwen IFILL in a clip from P.B.S. News Hour: We explore those questions with Jennifer Doudna.
C.B.S.: Jennifer Doudna.
N.P.R.: Jennifer Doudna.
FOX: Jennifer Doudna.
Cameron DIAZ in a clip from the Breakthrough Prize: For harnessing an ancient bacterial immune system as a powerful gene-editing technology …
Dick COSTOLO in a clip from the Breakthrough Prize: … the breakthrough prize is awarded to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna.
Doudna’s spent the past few years racing forward while also trying to slow things down. She wrestles with all this in a book she co-wrote with another CRISPR researcher, Samuel Sternberg. It’s called A Crack in Creation.
DUBNER: Why the title? It refers to what?
DOUDNA: At its core, the CRISPR gene-editing technology is now giving human beings the opportunity to change the course of evolution. And human beings have been affecting evolution for a long time, right? But now there’s a technology that allows very specific changes to be made to D.N.A. that gives us a new level of control. And so it’s opening a crack. I see it as analogous to opening a door to the future that is a change in the way that we think about our world.
DUBNER: As opposed to a crack in the dimension that we will fall through and all disappear. Not that kind of crack?
DOUDNA: We hope the former, not the latter.
DUBNER:You write in the book, “We uncovered the workings of an incredible molecular machine that could slice apart viral D.N.A. with exquisite precision.” So when you call it an “incredible molecular machine” — your breakthrough, of you and your colleagues — is it essentially an external, human-guided replica of what already exists? Or are you taking over the controls of what inherently exists?
DOUDNA: This is important. We’re really taking over the controls of what already exists. We’re doing it by using this bacterial system, the Cas9 protein, to find and make a cut in D.N.A. in, let’s say, human cells at a particular place where the cells’ natural repair machinery can then take over and do the actual editing.
DUBNER: What’s amazing to me is the natural repair machinery obviously exists, and maybe it works really well a lot of the time. It’s just in the most drastic circumstances, like a cancer or a debilitating disease, it doesn’t. The healing mechanism, from reading what you’ve written, it sounds as though it’s quite stochastic — it’s random, unpredictable. Some things it catches, some things it doesn’t, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Can you talk about big picture of this repair mechanism and how well or poorly it does?
DOUDNA: D.N.A. repair happens all the time in cells and, as you alluded to, it has to work right most of the time or we would probably not be here or we would all have a lot more cancer than we have. So we know that cells experience double-stranded breaks to their D.N.A. routinely and that they have ways of fixing those breaks. I would say that what this CRISPR technology does is it really taps into that natural repair pathway.
Since the announcement of the CRISPR-Cas9 technology, scientists around the world have been exploring its possibilities in many different arenas. Let’s start with plants.
DOUDNA: I think it’s important for people to appreciate that, first of all, that humans have been modifying plants for a long time genetically.
DUBNER: Thank goodness.
DOUDNA: For literally thousands of years. Exactly. Thank goodness. And you realize, “Wow, I’m glad there’s plant breeding.” But the way that that’s been done traditionally is to use chemicals or even radiation to introduce genetic changes into seeds and then plant breeders will select for plants that have traits that they want. Of course, you can imagine, when you do something like that, you drag along a lot of traits that you probably don’t want and changes to the D.N.A. that you don’t even control for. So you don’t even know where they are or what they might be doing.
The opportunity here with gene editing in plants is to be able to make changes precisely. Not to drag along traits that you don’t want; to be able to make changes that will be beneficial to plants but to do that very precisely. Then we have the opportunity to do things like give plants the ability to grow with much less water or to defend themselves against various kinds of infections and pests that are moving in due to climate change. From the perspective of the world food supply, that’s going to be extremely important going forward and will potentially allow us to have access to plants that are going to be much better adapted for particular environments and to grow, we hope, without chemical interventions of different types.
DUBNER: Now, given how nervous some portion of the population is about the phrase “genetically modified organisms” — even though, as you’ve pointed out, almost every organism on earth has been genetically modified for hundreds if not thousands of years — this feels like a next-level step that will raise all kinds of questions — even in the plant world, forget about humans or animals — of governance and autonomy and so on. What are your thoughts on that in the plant/agricultural world?
DOUDNA: It’s really going to come down to people having access to information about where our food is coming from so that people in different countries can evaluate these plants and the technologies used to create them and make their own decisions about what they want to do. Having a precision tool that allows us to generate plants that are better adapted to particular environments or maybe have even better nutritional value — I really believe that, going forward, we can’t afford to reject this. We really have to understand it and regulate it appropriately. But we do have to have this tool in our toolbox.
CRISPR gene-editing is also being put to use on animals.
Scott PELLEY in a clip from C.B.S. Evening News: Scientists in China are engaged in controversial research, genetically modifying beagles to be more muscular.
Isobel YEUNG in a clip from VICE: These mosquitoes have been genetically modified to breed with and eliminate their own species in an urgent attempt to wipe out carriers of Dengue fever.
Ameera DAVID in a clip from R.T. AMERICA: Researchers believe that they can recreate a woolly mammoth by combining its D.N.A. with that of a modern elephant.
DOUDNA: There’s at least one — and maybe more than one company now — that are using the gene-editing technology in animals like in pigs to create pigs that would be better organ donors for humans.
DUBNER: I like the micropig too. Sean DOWLING in a clip from Buzz60: Chinese genomics institute BGI began breeding micropigs to study diseases — but now they’re going to sell them as pets for $1,600 and give into the micropig craze. Miley Cyrus has one. DOUDNA: Yes, pets. Right, the idea of sort of a fanciful use in a way of getting you know making animals that we think are cute.

The gene editing revolution prompted by the work of scientists like Jennifer Doudna isn’t the only gene-related revolution these days.
DUBNER: Hey, Dalton. Stephen Dubner. How’s it going?
CONLEY: Hi, Stephen. How are you?
There’s also social genomics.
Dalton CONLEY: The social genomics revolution is really just getting started, I would say.
Dalton Conley teaches sociology and population studies at Princeton…
CONLEY: …and I’m the co-author of The Genome Factor.
You may remember Conley from an old Freakonomics Radio episode called, “How Much Does Your Name Matter?” He has two kids. A daughter:
E JEREMIJENKO-CONLEY: I’m E, like the letter.
And a son.
Yo JEREMIJENKO-CONLEY: I’m Yo, like the slang.
But those are just their first names. Full names?
E JEREMIJENKO-CONLEY: E Harper Nora Jeremijenko-Conley.
Yo JEREMIJENKO-CONLEY: Yo Xing Heyno Augustus Eisner Alexander Weiser Knuckles Jeremijenko-Conley.
DUBNER: So Yo, your first name, Yo, comes from where?
YO: I think it comes from the Y chromosome.
So Dalton Conley, the sociologist dad — he’s always had a crafty way of thinking about genetic identity.
DUBNER: So Dalton, the subtitle of your book is, “What the Social Genomics Revolution Reveals About Ourselves, Our History, and the Future.” Just begin by telling me, what do you mean by the social genomics revolution? What’s revolutionary about it? And describe the arc of the revolution and where we are in that.
CONLEY: The social genomics revolution is really just getting started, I would say. When Bill Clinton stood up in the year 2000 and announced that the book of life had been decoded…
President Bill CLINTON in a clip from the National Human Genome Research Institute: We are here to celebrate the completion of the first survey of the entire human genome. Without a doubt, this is the most important, most wondrous map ever produced by humankind.
CONLEY: …everyone thought everything was going to change suddenly. We’re going to have personalized medicine, we were going to — I don’t know what.
CLINTON: It will revolutionize the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of most, if not all, human diseases.
CONLEY: But actually not much happened for the first decade or so.
The great scientific hope was to find single, easily identifiable genes that controlled cancer or depression or intelligence or even just height.
Jason FLETCHER: So that turns out to be an exception rather than a rule.
That’s Jason Fletcher. He’s an economist at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, and he Conley’s co-author on The Genome Factor.
FLETCHER: Most of what we care about, most of life’s important outcomes, are not one gene and one disease. They’re more like hundreds or thousands of genes all with really tiny effects, if you can even find them.
Having a map of the genome was one thing. But, in the Bill Clinton era, there was a lack of good data. That has changed.
CONLEY: And now we have this: what I call the revolution is this surfeit of cheap genetic data.
FLETCHER: Just two decades ago, it cost a billion dollars to sequence a single genome. Now you and I could spit in a cup, send it to one of the popular sequencing outfits, and for $100 or for $150 we can get millions of answers to the question, “What does our D.N.A. look like?”
CONLEY: Anyone who sends their saliva into 23andMe —
Clip from a 23andMe advertisement: With just a small saliva sample, you’ll learn about your ancestry through your 23 pairs of chromosomes that make you who you are.
CONLEY: — to get their ancestry or their supposed health risks has now basically agreed to be part of their database that will be studied and that has well over a million samples of mostly U.S. citizens.
FLETCHER: And all that data is being pulled together in both genetic analysis and social science analysis to try to understand the vast array of outcomes we’re all interested in. That’s anything from Alzheimer’s and dementia on the health side to measures of educational attainment and socioeconomic position on the social science side.
CONLEY: And so we finally have big data sets with lots of genetic markers across the entire set of chromosomes. We’re now actually making robust discoveries that are withstanding replication and seem pretty solid. That’s the start of the revolution.
But, warning: it’s still early days.
FLETCHER: That’s right. So humans are very complicated, and the amount of data we’re talking about is in the millions or tens of millions of locations on our genome.
So what does this mean for a technology like CRISPR gene-editing?
CONLEY: That’s going to be very exciting for a limited number of single-gene diseases.
Diseases like cystic fibrosis, and sickle-cell disease, and Huntington’s disease.
CONLEY: But most things we care about in today’s world — heart disease, Alzheimer’s, I.Q., height, body mass index, diabetes risk all of those things are highly polygenic. That means that they’re the sum total of many little effects all across the chromosomes, and that probably means we’re not going to be doing gene-editing in a thousand different locations in the genome.
At least not anytime soon. But, with all the genomic data that are being accumulated, scientists have been devising a system to make sense of it all.
CONLEY: We have a tool that’s emerged called the polygenic score.
FLETCHER: You take all the small effect sizes that you’re finding across many, many, many genes. You add them all up, and then you created a summary scale of your predicted likelihood of doing X, where X could be smoking or getting dementia or going to college.
CONLEY: But those scores aren’t predicting very well right now. So before anything drastic happens socially, those scores would need to get a lot better. Once they really start explaining a lot of the variation in society, then I would start worrying.
Worrying because why?
CONLEY: The use by external authorities and companies of this information, that’s definitely scary. The other dimension is going to be in the marriage market, where people just take it upon themselves to want to know genetic information about their potential mates. If you knew that your potential mate was of high likelihood of developing early dementia, you might think twice before getting married. Phenotypes are for hookups but genotype is forever. So the technology for that is here now. It could be used in fertility clinics. It could be used on dating apps, where people could put their genetic profile linked from 23andme to OKCupid.
Selection, of course, is something we all do every day. It’s how we choose our friends; our allies and enemies; our political leaders. Some traits are observable; others, less so. Some are heritable; others, not. If the selection potential afforded by these new technologies is frightening to you, keep in mind the thing that’s new about this is the technology. Remember the eugenics movement? That was justified by a preference for …
FLETCHER: … a preference for people of certain European ancestry — and not all European ancestry, but certain favored groups — to have more children and to be given resources to the exclusion of all other people. Of course, it led pretty directly to Nazism and the extermination of millions of people. It was also used as the pseudoscience behind at least decades of racial injustice in the United States and many other countries.
That is the nightmare that has given Jennifer Doudna actual nightmares.
DOUDNA: That really was one of the defining moments for me in terms of thinking about getting involved in the ethical conversation. I had a dream in which I was working away — I think I was in my office actually — and a colleague of mine came in and said, “I’d like to introduce you to someone, and I’d like you to explain the CRISPR technology to him.” And he led me into a room. There was a light in the room and there was someone sitting in silhouette in a chair with his back to me. He turned around, and I realized with this horror — and I can feel it right now as I’m telling you the story, I feel this chill in my body — I realized that it was Adolf Hitler. And he was looking at me with very intent look on his face, an eager look. He wanted to know about this technology.
I felt this incredible sense of fear; both personal fear, but also a profound existential fear that if someone like that were to get a hold of a powerful technology like this, how would they deploy it? And when I woke up from that dream — and thinking about it subsequently — it was really scary to think about. I thought, “We have to proceed responsibly here.” We cannot just — or at least for myself — I can’t just carry on with my next experiment at my lab. I really have to get involved in a broader discussion about this. It’s just too important a subject.
DUBNER: I don’t mean to at all diminish your argument, but I hear a lot of scientists make a similar argument, which is, “Look, we’re doing our best on our end, and we really want to have this conversation in public, especially with people who have the leverage,” mostly politicians, “to make smart choices.” Does a good mechanism or forum for that conversation really exist?
DOUDNA: Well, we’re building it as we’re going, at some level. I’ve been involved in organizing a number of meetings. Right now, they’re fairly small in focus. But the idea is to really answer, we hope, that question that you just posed: how do you do that? How do you bring people from these different walks of life together so they can have a meaningful discussion? I don’t have the answer yet, but I do think that it has to involve formats that are accessible to people. It can’t just be a bunch of academics.
DUBNER: Talking in the silo to each other.
DOUDNA: Right, exactly. It cannot be that. It has to be using various ways. The media are going to be very important. People that write science fiction are going to be important. Movie makers are going to be important. Musicians and various kinds of visual artists are going to be important. All of those people are very skillful at communication, communicating ideas, and they can do it in some ways much more effectively than a lot of technical jargon would ever achieve.
DUBNER: Probably the most enticing and certainly the most controversial aspect of CRISPR is the power to reshape human beings, whether an individual with an illness, a generation of a family, or maybe an entire population. Obviously, it’s a gigantic area and something that probably brings a lot of strong priors to the table with already. But can you just talk about this issue, your thinking about the issue and where you’ve landed?
DOUDNA: I’ve seen an evolution in my own thinking, quite frankly. I have gone from feeling very uncomfortable with the idea of making changes to human embryos, especially for anything that would be considered not medically essential, to thinking that there may come a time — I don’t think we’re there now and I don’t think it’s right around the corner — but I think there may come a time when that application is embraced and it’s going to be deployed. For me, the important thing is not to reject it. It’s actually to understand it and really think through the implications.
DUBNER: Let me ask you to just to take a step back and talk about actual therapeutic treatment and the difference between germline and somatic editing.
DOUDNA: Ah, yes. That’s very important, to understand the difference. Most of the applications that we’ve been talking about, especially in medicine right now, involve what we call somatic-cell editing. That means making changes to the D.N.A. in cells of a particular tissue in a person that’s already fully developed. But those changes do not become heritable. They can’t be passed on to the next generation. But the contrast to that is changes to the germline. That means making changes to the D.N.A. of embryos or eggs or sperm, changes that are inherited by future generations and become effectively permanent in the human genome.
There’s a profound difference between those two uses. If you’re doing something that affects one person, it has to be regulated, of course, and you have to make sure that it’s safe and effective, but it affects just that one person. Whereas, if you make a change that affects somebody’s children and all of their children’s children, etc. — that is really profound and it really does affect, ultimately, human evolution.
DUBNER: Let’s say I cared about some strain of heritability enough to do it on a fairly wide scale. Then presumably, it would increase my incentive to maybe diminish the supply of non-germline treated people, right? So you could imagine —
DOUDNA: Now you’re getting into Gattaca territory here.
DUBNER: Well, it doesn’t take long, even for a mind as flabby as mine, to get there pretty quickly, right? The potential for this reminds me a bit of the potential for geoengineering, intentionally altering the planet’s atmosphere to change the temperature in case global warming gets really destructive. One of the key questions there is governance. Who gets to control the thermostat? And I know that you’ve been outspoken and you’ve really flung yourself into the ethical and practical elements of this technology, but I’m curious where you stand on the biggest — I don’t want to say scariest, because I hate when we’re knee-jerk scared of new technologies that are prima facie wonderful — but I do wonder your thinking on that.
DOUDNA: You alluded to this, but I think it’s very important to emphasize that this technology is going to, overall, have a very positive benefit to human beings in many ways. I’d really like to make sure that people get that message. Because I think it’s easy to try to make things sound exciting by making them sound really scary.
DUBNER: Sure.
DOUDNA: This is a technology where we’re already seeing incredibly exciting advances: opportunities to cure genetic diseases that have had no treatments in the past, to advance the pace of clinical and other types of research, to make it possible to understand the genetic basis for disease and then be able to do something about it when you have that information. What needs to happen is that scientists need to really engage with government regulators and, frankly, also with religious leaders and other kinds of thought leaders to make sure, first and foremost, that there’s a very clear understanding of the science behind this as much as possible.
DUBNER: Let’s pretend that this technology within a couple of generations works so beautifully that it extends lifespan by 20 percent or 50 percent or 200 percent. Do you think about what happens in terms of obvious things like global resources if people are living twice as long? But also, how we as animals would respond to that scenario in which scarcity diminishes so much, the scarcity being a short lifespan? It seems that humans are relatively slow to adapt to the diminishment of scarcity over time. It seems we still eat, for instance, in the 21st century, as though the next meal may or may not appear on the horizon. I’m curious, if all of a sudden there are all these extra years — in terms of everything, labor markets and retirement and existential issues — like, “What do I do now for those next 80 or 100 years that Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues helped facilitate?” Do you think about those things?
DOUDNA: There’s lots of interest in that topic right now as you know, especially here in Silicon Valley. For me, it really would come down to, are those extra years high-quality years? Are they years where people could be contributing importantly to society? And if the answer is yes then that is very interesting to think about. If the answer is no, then I certainly don’t think that sounds very appealing at all. I’d rather take short and healthy than the long and miserable. But the prospect of enhancing human health — if that goes hand-in-hand with longevity — I certainly would like to see it be something that was available to communities around the world, not just to a few people.
As much uncertainty as there is around the future of CRISPR-Cas9, and the genetic revolution generally, you probably won’t be surprised to learn there’s also uncertainty about where the proceeds from these discoveries will flow. As you can imagine, they are potentially huge. Jennifer Doudna’s team filed patent rights early on to use the CRISPR system on virtually any living thing. But not long after, a researcher named Feng Zhang from the Broad Institute of M.I.T. and Harvard filed CRISPR patents on an important subset of living things. The conflict went to the federal Patent Trial and Appeal Board, which ruled in Zhang’s favor; but the final outcome is far from settled.
A few updates since we first released this episode last year. The research journal Nature Methods published a paper suggesting that CRISPR wasn’t as precise as people like Doudna say it is. The authors claimed it caused 2,000 unexpected mutations. But that paper was recently retracted. In other news: the U.S.D.A. recently approved a broad range of gene-edited foods. CRISPR even featured as a major plot point in the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson movie Rampage. And on the intellectual property front: Doudna’s team at UC Berkeley is appealing the Patent Office’s decision; the European Patent Office, meanwhile, revoked the Broad Institute’s CRISPR patent there.

5 Ways to Be an Unforgettable Teacher
Vicki: Today we’re talking with Chuck Poole @cpoole27 of the Teachonomy blog and podcast about five ways to be an unforgettable teacher.
So, Chuck, what is our first way?
Chuck: Well, our first way — because you know on Teachonomy I like to say, “Be the teacher they never forget.”
I love talking about this especially to help inspire teachers.
Unforgettable Teacher Tip #1: Start with a Relationship
The first way, I think, is probably the most important that we’ll even talk about. I want to start with it, and it’s relationship.
I believe that there’s a big difference between having a relationship with someone where you know maybe we say hello or or we have small talk, and then nurturing one that we actually care about. I think that it’s in creating those genuine relationships that you become unforgettable.
Vicki: So, how are some ways you nurture those relationships?
Chuck: Whether you’re investing in your students, or your colleagues, or even people at home, I think that the key is simple. I think that you hit on this a lot on your site just from experiencing it. I think that the key to it is we need to let people know that they matter.
Vicki: (agrees)
Chuck: And then our relationship will grow as we build trust. But I think one problem that people have is that they don’t know where to begin. So one thing that I would recommend and one thing that I think is very tangible — it’s what I do, and I have found that it’s an easy way to break the ice and begin nurturing a relationship — is through simple notes. So regardless if you’re super outgoing or extremely shy, these notes can kind of serve as a bridge to help build a relationship.
What I do is I actually have two sets of encouraging note cards. I actually had a designer create them. I like to print them, and I keep a stack of them on my desk. So I have one stack that was designed specifically to encourage teachers and one that’s for students and parents and everyone else.
Download Chuck’s notecards here: http://ift.tt/2hmxVT8
And what I do is, I will literally take one — and they have inspirational quotes and things like that on them — and I will turn it over and hand write the note. I’ll drop it in the colleague’s mailbox, or in the student’s notebook, or even give it to parents during parent-teacher conferences. I find that it’s opened doors to relationships that I would never have otherwise had.
Vicki: Now you’ve got these. We’re going to add it to the show notes, so that the listeners can download, too, right?
Chuck: Yeah so I have them on Teachonomy, but I’ll give you the links for both sets of those, so that way people can download them and share them with their colleagues and their students. I find that they are just really accepted well. People always smile when they have a personalized note from someone. One thing that I did find — just to wrap up this particular idea — is that these notes have given me the opportunity to build relationships in a way, where I’ve gone from the person that someone is smiling at, to the reason why they’re smiling. I think that there’s a big difference.
Vicki: Ohhhh. I love that! OK, what’s our second?
Unforgettable Teacher Tip #2: Be the Coach in the Classroom
Chuck: Our second one is to be the coach in the classroom. Now this one hits home with me because I’ve actually been a coach for over 20 years — in athletics and in sports.
One thing that I’ve learned is that in order for my team to be successful, I need them to know three things:
They need to know that they can trust what I say.
They need to know that I believe in them.
They need to know what their goals are, and that I am someone who could help them achieve them.
So when they have these three pieces of knowledge, I’ve had successful teams, and I’ve become a coach that they remember.
So in order to be a coach in the classroom, I think that we can grasp those concepts and put them into our classrooms. I think before students can learn from us, and before we become unforgettable in their minds, they have to know these three things; they have to know that they can trust you, they have to know they that you believe in them, and they have to know that you can help guide them toward accomplishing their goals.
Vicki: I love it.
Chuck: Once they know those three things, then you can truly coach them and guide them and really become unforgettable.
Vicki: Awesome. What’s our third?
Unforgettable Teacher Tip #3: Face Your Fears
Chuck: The third one is to face your fears. I’m a firm believer that no one ever moves forward in life by standing still. I think in order to be an unforgettable teacher, you have to be willing to get rid of the excuses that kind of get us stuck. We have to be willing to take the risks that scare us in order to move forward.
And this is cool, Vicki. I read a statistic the other day, that said in our world today our knowledge doubles every three months. so that means that today, we know double what we knew just three months ago.
I think as a teacher, that kind of tells us that we need to be willing to embrace change. In order to stand out from the crowd — and change tends to be something that we often fear because we fear that with that change comes failure.
Vicki: (agrees)
Chuck: I think one way to face that fear is to look at failure a little bit differently. I think if we were to change how we look at it. Instead of looking at failure is something that we did wrong, or we couldn’t accomplish, but we look at it rather as something we needed in order to learn and move forward, I think we would be able to face those fears and embrace change a little bit differently. Once we embrace that change and we face those fears, we begin to eliminate the excuses that once got us stuck, and we help students become even better than we thought possible, even if it scares us to death.
Vicki: Yeah. Once I heard an acronym for FEAR. False Evidence Appearing Real. That is so true many times. So what’s our fourth?
Chuck: Yeah I agree that is awesome, that acronym, actually.
Unforgettable Teacher Tip #4: Exceed Expectations
The fourth one is to exceed expectations. Now, great teachers, I think always exceed expectations, and I think most people that are listening to this probably would fall into that category.
I find that a story that was once told to me kind of transformed the way I look at how I teach. I just want to share that, because I have a friend and a mentor that’s outside of teaching so it’s not someone that is a teacher. But they told me a story once to kind of explain a point about his daughter.
He told me that when his daughter was younger, she loved to play games on his iPhone, just like any kids would. She would constantly ask for time to play, and he would oblige and say,”Yeah, sure. That’s fine.”
But there was one time that she came in, and she asked him if she could play on his iPhone, and he said no. So she walked away and she was kind of sad. He said he stopped her, and he said, “No, just wait one second.” He reached in his bag and he pulled out his iPad. And he said, “You can’t play on my iPhone, but you can play on my iPad.”
He was saying that you know, from a loving father he wanted to give her much more than she expected.
I think as teachers, we should strive to give our students an iPad experience when they’re expecting an iPhone.
Vicki: I love that! OK, what’s our fifth?
Unforgettable Teacher Tip #5: Be Quiet
Chuck: Our fifth is to simply be quiet.
Vicki: Ohhhh, that’s hard!
Chuck: What I mean by that is that think that teachers should really never be the loudest person in the room — which we’ve heard that the people doing the learning should be the ones doing the talking, which is something that I heard in a conversation as well. I think that we all understand that the importance of collaboration and discussion is crucial. But to be unforgettable, I think we need to be quiet in a different way.
Here’s what I mean. One thing that I did this year — and I found it to be a game-changer — was I implemented a weekly meeting. Literally, what I did was I took one class period. I took it out of the curriculum, and everything. It was on Fridays, and every Friday we have one class period that was dedicated to having an in-house meeting with my classes. I teach middle school, so I have multiple classes.
What we would do is each week with each class, we focus on three things.
1 – Evaluate me as a teacher
The first thing I told him was probably one of the most important, and that was where they had to evaluate me as a teacher. They have to tell me what I did well, what I did poorly, what I can improve on. I gave them that voice to kind of give me the criticism that I would need in order to help me get better.
2 – Class meeting about learning
Second, I told them the concepts that we be focusing on the next week, and together we would brainstorm how they wanted to learn them. So then it was my job to kind of develop the unit or lessons around it with it how they themselves learned.
3 – Plan together
Then third, we’d literally plan together. We would work out things like rubrics or strategies or things like that together so they had a full understanding of the expectations. They knew the expectations going into the following week, and they essentially helped create them. It gave them ownership of their learning.
I found that even with boring materials, they were more engaged after implementing these meetings than they ever had been. So I think, you know, when we take the time to be quiet and listen carefully, and we give our students that chance to give input, we become just unforgettable.
Vicki: Oh, I love that! Like, I’m so doing that, Chuck!
Chuck: (laughs)
Vicki: I’m sitting here thinking about, you know, the greatest PD for me is very often podcasts, blog posts, but even when educators who care share… So when you talk to somebody like you, and you have these amazing ideas, it transforms us.
I’m so excited about striving to be unforgettable. Thank you!
Chuck: Oh, you’re welcome!
