WIP WHENEVER
Tagged by @trashkingnyx thank youuuu
I'm perpetually working on things because I pick up 100 million projects when I'm inspired and then lose said inspiration but then the stubbornness kicks in so then I gotta finish them or else I feel guilty. Hope that helps <3
1. COMPLEXIONS
Who saw this coming, because I surely didn't. It's not like complexion mods are the only thing I know how to make well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The frankly unsettling flattened skin texture, or diffuse, on the left are tattoos I'm making for my woof boy, Noel. There are many different pieces because there's a billion seams I have to account for to make a sleeve that covers from shoulder to fingers without gaps. And it destroys my brain. The handsome lad on the right is my baby Vesper and those are his custom tattoos I made that need to be fixed up a little bit. Because there's flaws only my eyes can see <3
2. PROPS
Tumblr media
Ya boy is also venturing into propmaking. Less venturing and more throwing myself in the deep end because I physically can't learn anything normally. ANYWAY I want a trillion neon signs at my beck and call for picture taking so I've been scouring in game assets and yoinking them out for my own use. They're functioning, but there's some stuff I gotta touch up yet.
3. LORE
Yes, yes, we've all heard about my lore. It's still an ongoing process and frankly kinda tiring. Here are some snippets:
"The Saint" - while the name conjures imagery of holy pureness, Valen is anything but. Though that is part of why he's called this; it's a play on words that reflect his true methods. Early on in his career, Valen gained his reputation for being effcient, aggressive, and having a high success rate. Some operators that worked beside him began sarcastically calling him the Saint after seeing his typically ruthless and effective methods of completing contracts. The name stuck, even as Valen didn't embody saintly tendencies by any stretch yet. Although, that was part of the joke - a saint would never be as violent as Valen is, so how hilarious would it be if that's what he's called? It could be argued he was a saint of sorts for his clients, coming in and washing away their problems. Beginning around 2074, the name had another meaning attached to it - Valen would often willingly accept a pay cut to take those contracts that clients couldn't afford. These were usually non-corporate aligned persons who did not have the dollars at hand for the services offered by Ares Systems. Valen, apparently a bleeding heart at times, would take the contracts anyway and complete them. "The Saint" stuck even further after this.
Vesper's Lore - Around 10 months after running from Dario, Vesper found Valen. He'd been searching for him specifically, but Valen's not easy to find; he eventually approached him outside of Valen's work facility and Valen, of course, was shocked. He'd never known about Callen's other children, even though he'd always felt *something*. Unknowingly connected to Vesper from their shared father/sire. Over the next 6 months, they slowly grew closer, getting to know each other. They were both a little too similar to their father though, Vesper's brash nature inherited from Callen meaning he often called out Valen's own similarities to their father. To Valen's extreme dismay. Even though they tend to grate on each other's nerves, they do learn from each other and lean on one another often. Valen can't live without him now, nor can Vesper without him. When Vesper was 23, Dario found him again. He'd stopped being careful and accidentally let himself be found. Terrified, he was forced to tell Valen about that part of his past. Valen, in typical fashion, took it upon himself to make sure Dario could never find Vesper again. To this day, Vesper still doesn't know what Valen did with the body, and he'll never tell him.
And that's that <3 I'm going to tag some pals BUT there's NO pressure to share if you don't want to. If you do want to share, it could be anything; art, writing, mods, etc.

Okay so I was revisiting your Always My Number One fic and I was wondering if Cassie ever ends up on that list? What about Sienna and the Roomies? Imagine if all of them end up in top 50? 😂
And most importantly what would the reaction of Ethan and Max be 😏
Can I just say? I LOVE Always My Number One. I remember laughing the whole time I was creating those Picta and text fic edits and writing the scene between Cassie and Ethan. Definitely one of my favorites.
I’ve prepared a very long and detailed answer. And as I was writing it, the ideas kept coming for at least 2-3 fics. So I might write those one day. 😄
Cassie:
I do hc that Cassie ends up on that list after she publishes her book and starts to really gains national reknown for her work in medical advocacy. And guess who nominates her? Ethan!
He does it partly because he wants to tease her the way she did him, but mainly he’s just so proud of her. He doesn’t know the first thing about nominating someone for an online/Picta popularity contest though or about driving up the vote. So, he makes a call to the experts: Cassie’s besties.
Sienna and Max get the ball rolling and the rest of her friends join in by campaigning the heck out of it.
Cassie didn’t know until the Top 50 finalists list was announced and the public voting began. What the Roomies didn’t know was that Cassie had nominated Bryce that year and was actively campaigning to get him into the finalists list. They both had a good laugh when the list comes out and then the competition was on to reach the top 10!
By the end of it, Bryce ranked number 2 and Cassie number 1. Edenbrook’s PR team was over the moon that two of their doctors took the top spots. That was nothing compared to Ethan’s pride, and he made a rare post on Pictagram about it. I might end up writing this fic one day and will create the Picta posts then.
Cassie, who was a month away from giving birth to the twins, took great pleasure in rubbing it in and Ethan worried she might deliver early given her excitement. “My hair is clearly better than yours, Lahela!” Bryce didn’t mind as he truly thought she deserved it. But he did check his hair in the mirror that night – just in case.
The Gang
Jackie refused to even be considered for this competition. And promised retribution on anyone that tried to get her nominated. Aurora didn’t go that far but said that she had trouble enough shedding the “Emery” reputation and comparison to her aunt (Harper made the list if you recall). Her friends respected her stance even though Cassie was very tempted. Elijah was buried in the lab and thought his work getting recognized was more than enough.
Sienna:
As for Sienna, she doesn’t enter this competition because medicine is just a job to her. She’s been slowly pulling away from it since she and Max have their second child. I’ve talked about how she started a YouTube food channel when she was pregnant with Isabelle in previous posts. Over time, her subscribers grow to over 100K, and she wins the Silver Creator Award, and eventually the Gold Creator when she hits 1 million.
The accolades don’t end there. She is nominated by her subscribers for an online influencers’ competition, losing out to Gwyneth Monroe for the top prize. This brings her to the attention of a major publisher and media conglomerate that wants her to write a cookbook and become one of their celebrity TV show hosts. She says yes to the book, but no to TV. She’s happy raising her family, practicing medicine part-time, and doing her online channel.
Max believes she can do it all if she wants to and they can easily afford additional help. But for Sienna her family always comes first, and she doesn’t want to miss out on her children growing up.
As always, Max is her biggest fan and is so incredibly proud of everything she does. He brags about her all the time in his media interviews and his Picta feed is a love letter to her.
He often teases her that soon she’ll have her own multi-billion-dollar media empire and he can retire early to become a trophy husband. She thinks he’s being silly and sexy shenanigans ensue when he tries to prove to her that he means it.

Bitcoin’s price rally to a new multi-week high came to a halt in the past 12 hours or so, with the asset plummeting by over a grand. The alternative coins have suffered just as badly, if not worse, with PEPE dumping by double digits. BTC Stopped at $28.5K The primary cryptocurrency traded flat for several days, starting last Thursday, when it pumped to around $27,000. It spent most of the weekend sideways at around that level. However, the landscape began to change on Monday morning during the Asian trading session. The bulls took complete control of the market and initiated a massive leg up. This resulted in BTC soaring past $28,000 for the first time in weeks and culminated in touching $28,600, which became a 6-week peak. However, bitcoin failed to maintain its run and started to lose value rather quickly. In a matter of half a day, the asset lost more than a grand and dipped below $27,400 earlier today. Despite recovering a few hundred dollars since then, the cryptocurrency is still roughly 3% down on the day. Its market cap has lost over $15 billion and is south of $540 billion, but its dominance over the alts stands tall at 49.4%. BTCUSD. Source: TradingView Alts Turn Red Most alternative coins exploded yesterday with notable gains, but, as expected, the tides have turned today, and red dominates most charts. Ethereum is among the poorest performers now, having dumped by almost 5%. Consequently, ETH has fallen below $1,700 once more. Binance Coin, Ripple, Dogecoin, Tron, Toncoin, Polkadot, and Litecoin are also well in the red, while SOL, ADA, and BCH have posted minor retracements. Further daily losses come from the likes of Aptos and Optimism, perhaps in anticipation of the token unlocks later this month. PEPE has dumped the most from the top 100 alts. The meme coin is down by 11% in a day. The total crypto market cap has erased most gains from yesterday and is down below $1.1 trillion again. Cryptocurrency Market Overview. Is Cryptocurrency A Good Investment
Tumblr media
Given the billions of dollars invested, the buzz around cryptocurrencies, and the daily introduction of new cryptocurrency companies, the question that many investors are asking themselves is if cryptocurrencies are a viable investment. Even though most, if not all, cryptocurrency investors lost money on scams like the Squid Game token, TerraUSD stablecoin, and other altcoins, is it still a smart idea to invest in cryptocurrencies? Given the extraordinary volatility seen thus far and the claims of cryptocurrency millionaires gaining or losing millions overnight, would a prudent investor still consider investing in the sector? The time horizon is the most significant distinction between investment and trading, thus we must make it first. Any asset dealing frequently has a short-term time horizon and is more speculative. Dealers may perform hundreds of trades each day to profit from intraday price fluctuations.
Trading calls for a disciplined approach since experienced traders appropriately manage their exposures. But investing is a disciplined strategy that accomplishes predetermined financial goals over a longer period, usually five years or more. Investors could create a plan to save money for retirement, a home purchase, or a child’s education. Determine your level of risk tolerance in the following stage. Because of their volatility, cryptocurrencies will only be a good investment if you can stomach a certain amount of risk. If even little price changes keep you up at night, higher volatility investments might not be the best option for you. Due to their price volatility, which is equivalent to that of other asset classes like growth stocks or high-yield bonds, cryptocurrency assets are risky investments. You must be equipped to handle potentially disastrous pricing changes.
Liquidity Constraints
Another element to consider is the liquidity limits that some crypto assets have. Simply said, liquidity refers to how simple or challenging it is to buy or sell a certain item at any moment without significantly affecting the price. If you want to buy a rare automobile, for instance, there are many of them available, and if you can find one, you will simply pay what the seller requests. Because the following seller would surely seek a higher price from the subsequent buyer if you bought the market, it is very illiquid. But if you want to buy something more general, such as exchanging some Japanese yen for your US dollars, because there is a lot of liquidity, the price you pay for the yen will be wherever the market is. The next buyer of the yen will probably purchase it at a price that is comparable to or near the one you transacted, given there is a lot of liquidity among JPY traders that take UD as a form of payment.
Benefits Of Investing In CryptoCurrency
We’ve discussed some of the important aspects that investors should be aware of so far, but there are also compelling justifications for investing in cryptocurrencies.
1. New Asset Class
A new asset class for these kinds of assets is likewise developing as cryptocurrencies expand and change, as we have seen with Bitcoin and Ethereum. Like Cathy Wood from Ark Investment Management, several notable professional fund managers have created specialised investment funds that solely invest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
2. Diversification
The aforementioned institutional investors also strive to diversify their risks by owning a variety of investments that behave differently under the same economic conditions. Some claim that cryptocurrency diversification benefits are helpful, especially in light of inflation being on the rise. Additionally, we have seen the introduction of brand-new investment vehicles that profit from the ascent of certain cryptocurrencies, such as options and futures on Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as specific investment vehicles that properly handle cryptocurrencies for investors.
3. Upside Potential
Not to mention that the market is still very new, so there may be even more advancements in the future that will make investing in cryptocurrencies more appealing. Stablecoins are one type of cryptocurrency that is backed by assets and is correlated to the value of a fiat currency. If fraud is an issue, tougher regulations, such as those governing initial coin offerings, may be put in place to protect investors. Futures on cryptocurrencies have already been announced, and futures on more cryptocurrencies that are traded on reputable exchanges could also become accessible if the market changes. Furthermore, futures make it possible for bitcoin bears to short-sell the commodity, boosting overall liquidity.

Investors showed hopes that even a positive wink from Musk on SNL towards DOGE would trigger his 106 million fans to purchase the meme-token. Traders have actually begun disregarding Musk's renowned association with Dogecoin, provided their half-hearted responses to his DOGE-related updates recently. On Friday, the Hong Kong stock market fell below the 15,000 level on the settlement day of the futures index. It opened 3 points lower at 15,424 points in the early part, and continued to trend downhill after that. The decline further expanded in the afternoon, and fell by up to 657 points, falling below the 14,900 level, a low See 14,770 points, but the market narrowed slightly. The Hang Seng Index fell 564 points, or 3.66%, to close at 14,863 points, hitting a more than 13-year low. The HS Tech index fell 166 points to end at 2,822. Market turnover was HK$124.6 billion .
The Hang Seng Index lost 1,348 points, or 8.3%, for the third week in a row; the HS Tech Index lost 278 points or 8.96%. Mainland funds spent a total of about HK$28.1 billion to receive goods last week, but it did not work.
As the technical indicators are seriously oversold, there is expected to be a short-term rebound. However, the risk of rebound is very high. After breaking the 15,000-point mark, it has become the closest resistance, and the bigger resistance is the falling gap last week (15,993 to 16,010). If the market loses last Friday's low of 14,770, it will fall towards the 14,000 to 14,300 area. More pessimistic, the medium and long-term may test the 2008 low of 10,676 points.
Hong Kong stocks have fallen sharply recently, mainly because the domestic housing debt crisis has not been resolved, and the mainland's zero-clearing policy has not been relaxed, dragging down the economic growth of the mainland and Hong Kong, and even causing the market to worry about the development prospects of the Greater China region. In addition, the exchange rate of the US dollar was strong, and the Hong Kong dollar was pegged to the US dollar, and the asset prices of Hong Kong stocks adjusted downward in disguise. However, it is expected that as the pace of interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve slows down, the US dollar is expected to peak and fall next year, and the RMB will stabilize at that time, which will support Hong Kong stocks to some extent. Because, the US Federal Reserve will announce the results of its interest rate meeting on Thursday, raising interest rates for the fourth consecutive time by 0.75%, rising to 4%, hitting a new high since December 2007. There is no suspense.
Apple's performance was satisfactory, the stock price rose more than 7%, and the profits of large oil companies broke the top, the US stock market rose sharply on Friday. In the U.S. market, the Dow soared 828 points to 32,861, marking its sixth straight day of gains. The benchmark index rose 93 points to 3,901. The Nasdaq rose 309 points to 11,102.
Accumulated last week, the Dow jumped 5.72%; the benchmark index jumped 3.95%, the largest two-week rise since November 2020, with a cumulative two-week increase of 8.87%; the Nasdaq earned 2.24%.

Denver Broncos Regular Season Game 3
Hawk Valley
Denver Broncos Regular Season Week 3 September 25 2022
Quick Review
The Broncos beat the winless Texans 16-9, but they were losing heading into the fourth quarter and it took everything they had to win this game. That’s one of the reasons the Broncos are expected to lose the game against the 49ers today.
Some of the owners were at the game. I noticed Condoleezza Rice in the box, she was watching the game intently when the camera zoomed in on the owners box. Greg and Carrie Penner were there, as was Rob Walton. I think he was in the center of the group. President Amani Leech was also in the box. The owners and Amani were sitting in the front row of the box. I have no idea who was sitting behind the owner’s row, but they were busy knitting.
During the week the game felt more like a loss than a win.
Outside of Denver, most people are caling Rusell Wilson washed up. They are very happy to point out that Denver is locked onto Wilson for seven years and a quarter of a billion dollars.
A longer review
On Sunday, the 18th of September, the Broncos took on the winless Houston Texans in Denver. The temperature at the start of the game was 84 degrees.
The Texans got the ball first and their drive started from the 25 yard line. The first play of the game was an incomplete pass by David Mills, #10. On second down, Dameon Pierce #31, picked up eight yards over the left side. On third down, Pierce tried to scramble over the right side, but D.J. Jones #97, tackled him for no gain. Cameron Johnston #11, punted on fourth down. Before the first play of the day for the Broncos offense, Andrew Beck #83, was flagged for an illegal block above the waist during the punt.
On first down from the eight yard line, Russell Wilson #3, pitched the ball to Javonte Williams #33 who ran over the right side for a gain of nine yards. On second down, Russell threw an incomplete pass, but there was a flag on the play. Derek Stingley Jr. #24, was flagged for pass interference. The Broncos advanced ten yards. On first down, Russell pitched the ball to the left and Williams picked up five yards. On second down, Russell connected with Courtland Sutton #14 for a 21 yard gain. Then Gordon ran to the right and lost a yard on first down. Russell then threw two straight incomplete passes to close out the drive. With 10:46 left in the quarter, Corliss Waitman #17 punted on fourth down.
On first down, from the 20 yard line, Mills fired the ball to Brandin Cooks #13 for a gain of five yards. On second down, Mills reconnected with Cooks for one more yard over the left side. On third and four, Mills threw the ball to Nico Collins #12 for a five yard gain over the left side. Then Mills threw an incomplete pass on first down. On second down, Mills connected with Chris Moore #15 over on the right side for a gain of nine yards. With one yard to go on third down and 8:44 left in the quarter, Pierce slipped in the backfield and lost four yards. Johnston punted on fourth down.
On first down, Jerry Jeudy #10 ran a cross route to the right and picked up 11 yards. With 7:10 left in the quarter, Russell connected with Montrell Washington #12 for a gain of 39 yards, but Melvin Gordon #25 was flagged for holding. On the next down, Jeudy fumbled but he was ruled down after a gain of one yard. On third and nine, with 5:53 left in the quarter, the Broncos called a flea flicker. Russell tried to connect with Jeudy on the play, but the pass was incomplete and Jeudy was injured on the play. He would not return to the game. There were also two flags on the play. Once again Stingley was flagged for pass interference. The other flag was called on Kurt Hinish #93, for being offside. On first and goal, from the two yard line, Russell Wilson connected with Sutton who was running a fade into the corner for a touchdown. Upon review, the pass was ruled incomplete and the touchdown was taken off the board. On second down, the Broncos called the same play, but this time the pass was incomplete. On third and nine, with 5:40 left, Russell Wilson's pass was tipped and it looked like Kendall Hinton #9 caught it, but it was ruled incomplete. On fourth down, Brandon McManus #8 kicked a 20 yard field goal.
On first down, Pierce ran to the left side and picked up 12 yards. Then Mills threw an incomplete pass. On second down, Mills connected with Pharaoh Brown #85, for a gain of 18 yards. Pierce ran up the middle for seven yards on first down. On the next play, Mills went back to Brown, but this time he only gained two yards. On third down, X-Bronco Jeff Driskel #6, came in and scrambled to the left for ten yards. Mills came back in and threw two straight incomplete passes. On third down, the Broncos were flagged for having too many people on the field. The Texans gained five yards. On third and five, with 2:26 left, Mills was under pressure and he threw another incomplete pass. On fourth down, Ka’imi Fairbairn #7 successfully kicked a forty yard field goal.
When the Broncos got the ball back, Russell was under pressure and with 2:20 left in the quarter, he threw another incomplete pass. On second down, Williams ran up the middle for a five yard gain. With thirty seconds left in the quarter, Gordon ran up the middle. He gained five yards and that play ended the first quarter.
After one quarter in Denver, the score was Denver 3, Houston 3.
With one yard to go, Williams ran parallel to the line of scrimmage in what I can best describe as a wiggle run (one yard gain, one yard loss, one yard gain…) to the left for two yards. On first down, Russell's pass hit the turf. On second down, Russell was sacked by Rasheem Green #92, for a six yard loss. On third down, Gordon caught a ball over the middle for a six yard gain. Waitman punted with 13 minutes left in the half.
On first down, Mills fired off a quick pass to Pierce for an eight yard gain. On second down, Pierce ran up the middle and picked up four yards. On first down, Mills found O.J. Howard #83, over the middle for a seven yard gain. On second down, Pierce ran into the middle of the defense and when he came out of the pile, he had gained seven more yards. It was reminiscent of the Shawshank escape. On first down, Mills found Brevin Jordan #9, for a four yard gain. On second and six, Mills connected with Cooks in stride for a gain of 25 yards. On first down, Mills called his own number and the quarterback scrambled over the left side for sixteen yards, but there was a flag on the play. Lareemy Tunsil #78, was flagged for holding. On first and 20, with 8:30 left in the half, Mills tossed the ball to Rex Burkhead #28, and he picked up four yards. On second and 16, Mills attempted a deep pass, but it was incomplete. On third and 16, Houston called a timeout. When play resumed, Hills was almost sacked but he managed to complete a pass to Burkhead for a five yard gain. On TV, there was a slide show of old bronco teams and the announcers mentioned that Russell Wilson was 3-11 for 38 yards. On first down from the 18 yard line, Russell's pass was incomplete. On second down, Williams gained 10 yards over the right side. The Broncos went back to Williams on first down and he gained four yards after a quick pitch from Russell. On second down, Russell's pass fell to the ground incomplete. On third down, Russell threw the pass into a mass of defenders, luckily nobody caught it. With 5:40 left in the half, Waitman punted, but this punt took a huge Texans bounce of at least 10 yards.
On first and 10, Pierce ran up the middle for five yards. On second and five, Mills threw an incomplete pass. On third and five, Tytus Howard #71, was flagged for a false start. On third and 10, Mills was stripped of the ball by D.J. Jones #97, but A.J. Cann #60 recovered the ball and lost seven yards. On fourth down, with 4:45 left, Johnston punted.
As the broncos started another drive, the announcers pointed out that the Denver Broncos red zone offense is terrible. On first down, Gordon ran to the left for nine yards. On second down, Russell threw another incomplete pass, but there was a flag on the play. Kevin Pierre-Louis #57, was flagged for pass interference. The Broncos gained 12 yards. On first down, Russell pitched the ball to Gordon who gained eight yards, but there was a flag on the play. Sutton was flagged for unnecessary roughness. On second and 17, with 2:55 left in the half, Graham Glasgow #61 was flagged for a false start and the Bronco fans started to boo. On second and 22, Williams gained 17 yards. That play took us down to the two minute warning.
On third and five, Russell connected with Sutton for a 34 yard gain. On first down, with 1:50 left, Russell rolled to the right and then found Sutton for eleven yards. On first and goal, Russell rolled right again, but this time he threw an incomplete pass. On second and goal, with 63 seconds remaining, Williams carried the ball down to the one yard line. On third and goal, Russell was under pressure and threw the ball away. He was almost sacked. On fourth and goal, with 23 seconds left, the Broncos were flagged for delay of game. On the second fourth down, McManus kicked a 24 yard field goal.
With twenty seconds left in the quarter, Mills took a knee to end the half.
At 3:55 pm, the game reached halftime. The score: Denver 6, Houston 6.
The Broncos got the ball to start the second half. Russell handed the ball of to Williams for a gain of one yard, but there was a flag on the play. Lloyd Cushenberry #70, was flagged for holding. One first and twenty from the fifteen yard line, Russell Wilson scrambled up the middle for a four yard gain. On second and 16, Russell threw the ball to Sutton but Christian Kirksey #58, stripped the ball from him. It was ruled an intercepted pass.
After the turnover, from the 45 yard line of Denver, the Texans tried to score quickly, but Hills threw an incomplete pass. On second down, Pierce ran up the middle for eleven yards. The Texans elected to stay with the run game and a sweep to the left by Pierce gained eleven more yards. On first and 10 from the twenty-three yard line, Mills completed a pass to Chris Moore #15, for a five yard gain. On second down, D.J. Jones stopped Pierce for no gain. On third down, Mills connected with Nico Collins #12, for four yards. He was close to the first down but short. On fourth down and with less than a yard to go, Pierce ran over the left side for five yards, to the nine yard line. On first and goal, with 9:50 left in the quarter, Pierce carried the ball on a sweep play to the left, but there was a flag on the play. D.J. Jones was flagged for a facemask. Then Pierce lost two yards on first down. Mills was in tune with his team and threw another incomplete pass on second down. On third down, the Texans tried a quick corner route, but Mills tossed another incomplete pass. On fourth down, at 4:22 pm, Fairbairn kicked a 24 yard field goal.
On first down, from the 25 yard line, Williams carried the ball for seventeen yards over the left side. Then Williams tried the right side, but he only gained two yards. Gordon came in and ran up the middle for five yards. On third and three, Gordon ran to the right and picked up one yard, but there was a flag on the play. Cushenberry was flagged for holding. On fourth and two, with 6:46 left in the quarter, the Broncos called a timeout. When play resumed, Russell connected with Sutton via a stop route, over the right side, for six yards. On the next play, Williams was flagged for a false start. On first and 15, Russell found Tyrie Cleveland #16, over the middle for a twelve yard gain. Williams picked up two yards, over the middle, on the next play. On third down with a yard to go, the Broncos tried to run the option play with Beck. They lost one yard. On fourth down, with 3:40 left in the third quarter, the Broncos lined up for a 54 yard field goal attempt, there was a flag on the play. The Broncos were flagged for delay of game. With the extra time to think things over, the Broncos changed their mind about the field goal and Waitman punted on fourth down.
The Texans started from their nine yard line and on first down, Pierce picked up two yards running to the left. On second down, the Texans called a quarterback draw and Mills gained two yards up the middle. On third and six, Mills threw another incomplete pass. Gordon was flagged for a chop block and the Broncos lost 15 yards. On second and 21, Sutton caught a pass from Russell and he gained five yards. That play ended the third quarter.
After three quarters in Denver: Houston 9, Denver 6.
When play resumed, Russell hit Sutton for a 35 yard gain. Sutton was wide open! On first down, the Broncos tried a fake reverse to Sutton... they gained five yards. On second down, Williams gained six yards running to the right. With 12:40 left in the game, Russell Wilson connected with Eric Saubert #82, on a post route for a touchdown of 22 yards.
On first down from the 25 yard line, Mills completed a pass to Collins. He ran a deep square in and picked up 29 yards. On first down, Mill’s pass was incomplete. On second down, Mills fired off a short pass to Moore, but there was a flag on the play. Locke was flagged for illegal contact. On first down, Pierce ran to the left for three yards. On second down, Mills managed to throw the ball away as he was being sacked by #5. On third down, Mills was sacked by D Jones. On fourth and 14, Johnston attempted to punt, but the Broncos only had ten men on the field. The punt returner was not on the field, so with 9:55 left in the game, Denver used their second timeout. When play resumed, Johnston finally punted.
The Broncos started this drive from the 14 yard line. On first down, Williams carried the ball for three yards. It was pretty obvious, that the defense was more focused on stripping the ball than tackling him at this point. On second down, Wilson stepped out of a sack and hit Sutton for a ten yard gain. On first down, Russell was sacked by Jonathan Greenard #52, while faking a hand off. With 7:40 left in the game, on second and 16, Jerry Hughes #56 was flagged for a neutral zone infraction. On second down, Gordon showed off his balance by avoiding defenders to pick up nine more yards. On first down with 5:30 left, Russell's threw an incomplete pass. It was at this time the crowd decided to help the Broncos out with their time management issues and starting shouting the remaining time on the play clock when it reached ten seconds or below. On second down, Russell found Cleveland for 16 yards. With 4:40 left in the game, Russell threw the ball away as he was being sacked. On second down, Russell Wilson tried to go deep, but the pass was incomplete. On third down, Russell Wilson sacked himself and lost six yards. With 3:36 left on the clock, McManus kicked a 50 yard field goal. There was a flag on the play, Tremon Smith #1, was offside. The Broncos declined the penalty.
Houston started their drive from the 25 yard line. Mills found Collins for a twenty yard gain on first down. Then Mills connected with Cooks for 23 more yards. On first down with 2:45 left, Mills was sacked. He also fumbled the ball and Cann recovered the ball for Houston, but they lost nine yards. That play took us down to the two minute warning. On second and 19, Mills connected with Brown for a four yard gain over the right side. On third and fourth downs, Mills threw consecutive incomplete passes ending the drive.
The Broncos took over with 82 seconds left in the game and Williams carried the ball for no gain. The Texans called their first timeout. With 76 seconds left, Cameron Flemming #73 was flagged for a false start. On second and fifteen, Williams ran up the middle for three yards. With 69 seconds left, the Texans called their second timeout. On third and twelve, Williams lost four yards running to the right. With 64 seconds left, Houston called their final timeout. Waitman punted on fourth and 16.
The Texans took over with 53 seconds remaining. Mills found Jordan for a one yard loss on first down. Mills then threw three straight incomplete passes to end their drive.
With 13 seconds on the clock, the Broncos entered victory formation and Wilson took a knee to end the game.
Final score: Denver 16, Houston 9. Game time: three hours and five minutes.
Roster moves
On Saturday, Head Coach Nathaniel Hacket hired veteran NFL assistant Jerry Rosburg to help with game day process/operations. Rosburg spent 2008-2018 with the Baltimore Ravens.
Bronco players that that are listed as questionable for the game in Denver, are listed as active on NFL’s offical site.
Outlook
This will be the most interesting game of the season so far. Both teams are 1-1. Both teams have high expectations and think they can do better.
The Broncos are averaging 16 points through two games so far, the 49ers are averaging 19. Yeah, yeah it’s only two games but San Francisco has already undergone a massive change on offense. Their starting quarterback this season was Tray Lance, a project. He is now injured. With Tray behind center for the entire game, the 49ers managed just 10 points and lost to Chicago. With Tray’s backup behind center, the 49ers scored 27 points. In other words, the offensive production almost tripled with Jimmy in the game and that’s the team the Broncos play today.
Game Time
Sunday, September 25 @ 6:20 PM MDT

Shouto’s day went from good to bad faster than it took to pull an espresso.
It started off with a good morning text from you and having a brief, but pleasant, interaction at your work. Actually, the past few weeks have been going along a similar routine that he found himself settling into all too comfortably. You even upheld your promise of stealing him away one weekend to walk around the park, get food, and just have time to relax and be happy for once.
Getting to be in your presence almost daily became so normalized in his life that even some of his employees heard about the cute barista with the best pastries. Yet, although he saw you often, he found himself wanting to talk to you more and more.
But for now, Shouto told himself to settle with starting the mornings off with you. They were the best mornings he’s had in a while and he didn’t want to sound ungrateful.
Today, however, went sour fast after he heard his father was coming up to the top floor for a meeting with him. He didn’t find the idea of Enji visiting to be the most abhorrent thing, but the moment his father opened his mouth, Shouto quickly took that back.
As expected, his father reminded him about the annual charity gala Todoroki Enterprises was expected to attend. Handfuls of galas ran through the year, but the once hosted by Naruhata Industries under the guise of raising money and awareness for the charities of choice.
In theory, a charity gala ball sounded humanitarian and a way for the upper class to give back, but in reality, most of the funds collected didn’t go to the actual charities, instead they went to paying for the venue, live bands, entertainment, the most expensive catering, decorations, and more. What presented itself as a charitable event in the eyes of the public was really a way rich people could flaunt their wealth and feel good about themselves for doing absolutely nothing to benefit society. A way for the rich to suck their own dicks, if you would.
Shouto absolutely hated it.
It was also a press opportunity and, in his father’s eyes, a way to gain public favor for the Todoroki business. Today, Enji attempted to tell him that bringing a date that fit the mold of high society was the best way for him to establish rapport through media coverage. Apparently, the image news outlets have placed on Shouto were either a heartbreaker and playboy with no care for other’s emotions, or a monotonous stoic who seemed like a robot with no care for other’s emotions.
In either cases, there seemed to be a theme of Shouto not caring for others.
He sighed.
“You can’t keep that image, Shouto,” said Enji with his arms folded across his chest. “If the media sees you with someone—a nice girl with a good upbringing—then your likeability will increase tenfold. If there’s no one you like, I’ll have to set up a date for you.”
For a while, he was torn between telling his dad to fuck off and trying to do as he said to keep peace within the family. But then, an image of you popped into his head.
“Actually, there is someone I like.”
Enji narrowed his eyes. “Oh? An educated girl with wealthy parents?”
“There’s someone I like,” he simply repeated, the tone in his voice growing cold.
He didn’t know anything about your upbringing or family nor did he exactly care. Shouto didn’t want to bring a date to the dumb gala, but if he had to, he would want it to be you. Only if you agreed, of course. But if you weren’t willing, then he had to face the facts that his father would most likely force a date of his own choosing upon Shouto.
“That’s good you like someone, son,” Enji said through his teeth, “but we have to make sure it’s not some sort of...loose woman. That’d be even worse publicity—”
“I like someone and if you really cared about my happiness like you said you did, that’d be enough.”
There was a tense silence in the air. Shouto didn’t have enough fingers to count the number of times Enji had told him and his siblings that he would try to be a better dad. A caring dad who only wanted what was best for his children. A better husband for Rei. A better example for the public. The first few times, Shouto believed it. But Enji said the same things over and over again with no lasting change and Shouto was just fed up.
After hearing the same lie told to him over and over again, it seemed to lose its weight. He seemed to lose his hope in his father ever changing.
Still, Shouto had to deal with him for as long as he lived. That much he knew as a son living in this society.
But he hoped Enji at least had enough guilt to let him have this.
“Fine.”
Shouto blinked in surprise.
Enji stated, “If you think your date can help your public image and not be a complete embarrassment to the business, you can bring them.”
That was the closest thing to approval Shouto would get today. He nodded and listened along to whatever else his father had to say, the only thing actually on his mind was thinking about how he would ask you out on a date to some stuffy gala. And hope that you’d say yes.
— ✩ —
“Wait, so, let me get this straight— You’re the CEO of Todoroki Enterprises and even after almost two months of knowing you, I had no clue?”
He inclined his head, looking solemn. “Yes, I’m sorry. Are you upset with me for not telling you sooner?”
Initial shock aside, you couldn’t say that you were too surprised at the revelation. You knew Shouto was wealthy and probably in some high-up position in the business industry, but you never knew to what extent. A CEO? That had to be the highest rank in a company! And a company as well known as Todoroki Enterprises?
The thought made you a little nervous. The guy you slowly befriended over the course of short cafe visits and silly texts was Mr. Todoroki? Or worse— The guy you stole away from doing work for a whole weekend was someone as busy as a CEO? You internally groaned. That had to be against laws of the universe or something.
“I’m not upset, no,” you said with a shake of your head. “I just...can’t believe it I guess.” Eyes widening, you were quick to amend your words. “Well, I can believe it. You seem very intelligent and well-put together and, uh, rich! But I guess I just didn’t think a CEO would be so funny and kind.” You winced. “Oh no, is that mean to say?”
“I don’t think it’s mean.” He shrugged. “You’re right to say most people in this field aren’t known for their delightful temperaments.”
You absentmindedly drummed your finger against your thigh, trying to process this new information. “So you’re Todoroki Shouto...and you want me to be your date to the Naruhata Charity Ball?”
“Yeah. I know it’s a huge favor to ask, and I promise you can say no if you choose,” said Shouto in earnest. “I don’t want you to feel obligated to agree.”
With a hum, you stretched your legs out under the table before crossing one over the other again. It was a Saturday afternoon where you had no work and Shouto managed to escape from his for a few hours of the day. You took him to your favorite ice cream place nearby and the two of you ate at a dining area outside the establishment.
Just a mundane day as two friends hanging out with each other where you found out one of those friends was the chief executive officer of a billion dollar business headquartered in Japan.
Totally normal, everyday occurrences, obviously.
“And you need a date for this event?” you asked. In all honesty, you would be more than happy if Shouto asked you out on a date. He was fun and you enjoyed getting to know him. But these particular circumstances made you a tad bit more nervous.
“I normally wouldn’t need to bring one, but my father insists it’d help my public image and in turn the image of the company.” With a pinched look on his face, he took a bite of his ice cream. “In other words I bring a date or he picks one for me.”
You weren’t the most caught up on super rich people drama, but it was almost infamous how estranged the Todoroki family was. Again, you didn’t know much but you did know enough to say that Todoroki Enji seemed like a Class A asshole. If you could help Shouto out with his weird dilemma, you saw no reason not to.
“So this charita gala is like where they have those live auctions and silent auctions and get tipsy on fancy wine and champagne for hours right?”
He tilted his head to the side. “Yeah. Have you attended one?”
“Not quite,” you said with a sheepish smile. “I’ve volunteered at one in school though. As one of those runners? It was fun. I got a bunch of those tiny complimentary candies!” Your mouth watered at the memory. “What kind of drug were in those candies? I’ve never had candy so good before!”
“The tiny, circular candies with the excessively big wrapper? The fruity ones?”
You shot up in your seat, excited he knew what you were talking about. “Yes! That’s the one!”
The corners of his mouth quirked upwards. “I always see those at these types of events.”
“So… The candy will be there at the gala you want me to accompany you to?”
“Most likely.”
“Can I take a bunch of those from candies there…?” you asked with an optimistic grin.
“I’ll be your accomplice in sneaking them out.”
“It’s a date!” you said before Shouto could get another word out.
You’d be reunited with those yummy, fancy candies you’ve been separated from for far too long. What other reason did you need to agree?
With a determined look on your face, you held your hand out for Shouto to shake to seal the deal.
He blinked. “Wait. Did you want to discuss it some more? Maybe have a few days to think it through? I’m grateful, of course, but I don’t want you regretting anything.”
“No. I won’t regret it. I’d do anything to taste those candies again.”
Shouto looked unsure what to say. “Isn’t there some parable warning people not to be bribed by candy?”
“Not to take candy from a baby?”
“No. Not that one.”
“That’s the only one I know.”
“Never mind then.”
The two of you exchanged confused looks before letting out fits of laughter. You weren’t sure if either of you knew exactly what the other was laughing at, but the moment was an enjoyable one nonetheless.
“Yet another reason to bring me to that fancy event— I’ll make sure you’re entertained all the way through,” you playfully bragged, smoothing down the front of your shirt.
“The event will definitely be more bearable with you there.” He licked a small bit of his ice cream from his pink spoon, making a sound of approval. “But you can change your mind about coming at any time, Y/N.”
“I won’t,” you said, holding a pinky out. “Pinky promise.”
With what seemed like a bashful expression on his face, Shouto extended his own pinky to interlock yours. You sealed it with a kiss and a heart, like you were a kid again.
“Now, am I supposed to be in love with you at the gala?” you asked nonchalantly, finishing off your last bite of ice cream. He offered you a spoonful of his and you tried not to grow too flustered at Shouto feeding you his dessert. You murmured a quiet, “Thanks.”
He gave you a small smile. “You’re welcome. As for being in love… I don’t think that’s necessary. Just pretend you like being around me, I think.”
Under the table, you nudged his shoe with yours, pulling a face. “I don’t have to pretend about that, silly.”
“Ah, well,” he paused, offering you another spoonful of ice cream, “I don’t either.”
“I’m glad.” Then, “Is this strawberry? I was never a big strawberry ice cream fan but for some reason this tastes so good.”
You ignored the nagging voice in your head that said maybe it wasn’t so much the ice cream flavor but who you were enjoying it with.
The two of you finished his dessert in peace and after cleaning up the area with a napkin, Shouto turned to you with an intent look on his face.
“Before the gala, would you mind if I talk you shopping so you could pick out what to wear?” he asked. “I would pay of course— It’s the least I could do to say thank you.”
You shook your head. “You don’t have to thank me! You’re my friend and I want to help.” You thought about it for a moment. “And get the candy.”
“Anything for the candy.”
“Exactly,” you said in complete seriousness. “But I wouldn’t mind going shopping with you. You could help me decide what to wear! I’m not exactly sure how to dress for an event as fancy as this.”
“You could wear anything to the event and still look amazing.” His words were ones of flattery but his tone sounded completely genuine.
Heat rose to your cheeks at the compliment. “Look who’s talking— You’re practically runway ready no matter what time of day.”
“I’ve never walked a runway before.”
You stifled a laugh at his literal interpretation of your words. Cute. “Me neither.”
He looked confused at why you were grinning, but it still brought a smile to his own lips.
By now the sun had begun to set and Shouto was walking you to the train to see you off before you went home.
“Can I pick you up next weekend in the morning?” he said. “So we can get your outfit for the gala?”
“Sure! I’ll text you my address.”
He nodded in contentment. “And again, you don’t have to worry about any costs.”
“Is this why my friends have called you a sugar daddy?” you teased, bumping your shoulder against his as you walked down the street, side-by-side. “But thank you. Shopping will be fun— We can even match colors!”
“Mn.” He looked between the both of you, as if trying to picture what colors would complement each other.
You crossed the sidewalk in a comfortable silence, enjoying the scenery by Shouto’s side. A few times, you even felt his knuckles brush against yours and you had the undeniable urge to hold his hand. Would that be weird? you asked yourself before deciding against it.
Just because he asked you to be his date for the Naruhata Charity Ball didn’t mean he actually liked you, right? It was just a favor from a friend to a friend.
Something about that though made your stomach unsettled. Maybe part of you wanted it to be a real date— Wanted this to be a real date.
“So I won’t be seeing you tomorrow,” you said after a moment’s silence, trying not to look too dejected.
You knew he’d still text good morning and good night and ask you random things throughout the day (all of which you found really endearing, by the way), but it was still different from seeing him in person. Even though your time together in the morning was small, they still were enough to make your day. The thought of your waking hours being so entwined made you nervous, but for some reason it didn’t bother you as much as you thought it would. In fact, it was sort of...nice.
“I’ll see you Monday morning, right?” you asked hopefully, though you were already fairly certain of the answer.
Shouto nodded. “Of course. It’s already marked on my calendar.”
“Ever the flatterer, hmm?”
“Not flattery, just the truth.” He pulled his phone out and showed you his (rather packed) calendar app. To your surprise, a little reminder that said ‘See Y/N :)’ was marked on his Monday schedule.
Unable to stop the beam from spreading across your lips, you hid your face in your hands. Gosh— Did he have to be so cute? He was making it harder and harder to only like him as a friend. And even now, you weren’t sure if you liked him only as a friend.
But you pushed those thoughts away.
That was something to deal with at a later time.
When you reached the train station you normally took home, you turned to Shouto, giving him a big hug. He was tall and warm. You could feel his lean muscles through his button-down shirt as you rested your head against his chest and arms around his waist.
“Thanks for today,” you mumbled. “I’ll see you again soon.”
After a pause, he gave you a hug back, hands rubbing hesitant circles on your back in a way that made you smile. “Text me when you get home safe,” he said as you both reluctantly released each other from an embrace.
“I will,” you promised. “You do the same! Later, Shouto!”
And with that, you waved goodbye and boarded the train, unable to shake the unwavering grin on your face all the way home.

Hey, I liked your Greg essay a lot. The common interpretation is that Greg is too transactional and is hanging there only for money/ambition but family- love- acceptance- approval are also so very important for him, And how even Tom plays with those chords. and I loved it how you put it.
I really want them to get into Greg's backstory more, we see him reacting to stuff around him and being used as Tom's foil but I want to see more of him as a character actively thinking/doing.
Do you think one can gain his absolute loyalty by offering those (love/acceptance etc.) ? How do you think Tom's relationship with Greg is shaped and will be shaped by Greg's emotional motivations ? Like I am tired of speculating that Greg will betray Tom, maybe it will be the other way round or something else altogether. If you have any thoughts, please please share. Love your analysis. <3
Thank you so much! This message made me so damn happy tbh :D like this genuinely made my day! I’m glad you enjoy my rambling
Hmm…Greg and loyalty is a tricky subject because we’ve never seen him show unconditional loyalty but It can be argued no one has earned it. (Tom coming closest but Tom has hurt Greg too)
I don’t think he’s incapable but I think it’s something that would be difficult for him to give to someone because of how he runs on self preservation and has to do so in this cutthroat environment.
He’s got a lot to lose and everyone is already stabbing each other in the back constantly.
If there is a possible way to earn his unconditional loyalty though? It would be through love or affection. I still marvel at how he gave up a quarter of a billion dollars just because Logan said he liked him.
That’s going directly against the Greg only cares about money narrative because while he does want money and power that’s not his only drive.
He wants to be liked and loved. He wants to be a part of a family or just connect with another person.
The problem is this world he’s found himself in doesn’t really allow for that in a genuine sense. First off the Roys are incapable of forming normal and healthy attachments to other people.
I think Tom is the closest he has though because Tom does love Greg. For all his flaws and how badly he’s treated him he does show Greg the most loyalty. More than we’ve seen anyone give to another person in this show.
And I think Greg is realizing that but there’s still parts of him telling him to be careful around Tom.
I think Greg eventually becomes attached to Tom because (1) they’re both on the outskirts of the family together (2) Tom is the only one who shows him any attention or genuine affection honestly even if he also treats him like shit sometimes
And that’s why he keeps coming back to Tom, I think.
If Tom wants Greg’s loyalty he needs to be more open about his affection for him, he needs to let them be on more equal standing and he needs to make Greg feel safe.
(I think it’s worth noting Greg doesn’t betray most people out of pure malicious intent. It’s practical usually, at least go him. It’s not related to his feelings for the person. He’s just looking out for his own interests because someone has to. He’s honestly quite good at compartmentalizing in a lot of ways, distancing himself from his decisions emotionally. Honestly, kind of like Gerri but less..well Gerri knows what she’s doing and is a boss. Greg has no idea what he’d doing most of the time I think)
But yeah I would be pretty disappointed if Greg ended up betraying Tom because we’ve seen Greg do that before. It’s nothing new. Same old song and dance.
They gotta at least put some kind of twist on it.
I also think Tom turning on Greg is not as impossible as a lot of people think it is either? if he feels Greg has wronged him severely enough he might. (Look at Shiv. I mean it took a lot to push him to this point but it might take less from Greg after going through all that with Shiv. Especially since he’s going to feel Greg owes him probably)
Or I could see Logan pitting them against one another the way he does his kids. I could see him purposefully making them doubt each other.
Logan loves his mind games.
What would be truly heartbreaking I think is if Tom perceived Greg’s actions in a situation as betrayal so he betrays him in turn..only for it to turn out that wasn’t what Greg was doing at all. It could be other way around too. Or maybe they’re both convinced the other is betraying them but they’re not.
The first one is my favorite though because I see an opportunity for them to actually let Greg show genuine loyalty to someone and….. to have it so cruelly punished over a misunderstanding and an inability to trust other human beings in this horrible environment? *chefs kiss* I would die.
Greg trusting Tom, finally letting himself be truly loyal to Tom only for Tom to fuck him over because he couldn’t trust another person enough? (And Tom does not trust Greg completely and that’s absolutely fair honestly but it’s why he doesn’t give Greg details. He knows Greg.)
But for him to actually let himself trust Tom completely? Only for Tom to be unable to do the same because this environment, Greg’s previous actions and his other relationships have damaged his ability to trust? Fucking ouch.
In my ideal scenario they both end up being only loyal to one another and they get to be horrible and gay together <3
But I’m not sure that’s a route they will take.
Although it is worth noting that Sporus stayed by Nero’s side until the end.

strike to incinerate
Author: @jeevas-exe (ghoulhunt on ao3) For: @jam-knife Pairing/Characters: Light Yagami, B, L Lawliet Rating/Warnings: T, major character death Prompt: Light and B join forces to bring L down. How does that work out? Your choice to make it Blight or keep it platonic Author’s notes: I had SO much fun writing this piece! It was new and experimental for me to write in this style, but it was lots of fun going back and forth between perspectives and time. The biggest thing was consistency. Happy reading, I hope you enjoy! <3
1.
It’s close to midnight and the cars seem to be zooming by.
Adrenaline runs through B’s veins. Riding down the highway going upwards of eighty, ninety miles an hour, weaving between traffic, cutting other drivers off and getting honked at. Travel, travel, travel, his days and nights, following, trying to catch up to the black Mercedes with the blacked-out windows ahead of him. Wind whips by, caressing the parts of his body not covered in leather.
It’s cold.
There’s a sound. A shot. Shit, he thinks. He hopes it’s someone’s exhaust backfiring. There’s too many people around for this. The Mercedes zooms across six lanes of traffic, taking the closest exit. Trying to lose him.
He follows. He weaves between traffic on his bike, getting to the car, and he sees the other man leaning outside the window with a gun drawn, pointing in his direction. B grips his own, tight in his hand. He can see his steely grey eyes as he approaches, or maybe that’s just another memory.
B shoots.
The man slumps. Lifeless.
There are lights behind him, red and blue.
A.
The day Light Yagami meets him, he’s wearing the watch his father gave him.
It’s still on Japanese time, where it shows it’s about four in the morning, there. Here, it’s noon. He yawns. He’s restless and jet-lagged, making his way through the customs and the terminal and baggage until he’s out the door and headed to the address he was given.
5512 Highland Park.
The cab he climbed into forty minutes prior parks along the sidewalk of a rundown street. Apartments and small houses with chain-link fences dot the opposite side of the road; where he’s pulled up, a neon sign hangs, buzzing, the lights flickering and not really noticeable in the LA sun. Light notices the peeling, yellowing paint on the outside, the dead flowers in the flowerbeds, the rusted hinges of the dark green door; apparently, the only new renovation that Maple’s Bar & Grille has made in the past who-knows-how-long.
Light looks at his watch. The time ticks away. He pays the cabbie, walks through the squeaking door and up the small step, and is quickly greeted by a waitress, who tells him to take a seat wherever.
He spots him.
In the booth off to the side, sipping on a Shirley Temple, with a coke on the side. A brown-haired, flannel-donning fellow staring down at the newspaper. Light can’t discern what the headline says from here, but the photo shows the destruction of a building. It’s from the L.A. Times. It doesn’t matter, he thinks. Light slides across from him in the booth.
“Hello. Light Yagami.” He extends a hand. The American way.
The man lifts his head. Takes a sip from the glass of sugar he drinks. His eyes bore into Light’s soul, unsettling him, deep in his core, not acknowledging his hand whatsoever. Light retracts it.
“I’ve been waiting quite a while, you know.”
Light blinks. He looks away, tearing his gaze from the man sitting opposite him. He looks down at the menu on the sticky table. “The cab driver didn’t know where this place was.”
“No? This is one of the more popular places around here.” The man looks at the bar, towards a bunch of drunk men, off of work and watching a game on the TV in the upper corner of the room. They don’t even notice them in the booth. Good, he thinks. They don’t need attention. “Call me B.”
2.
B is handcuffed. B is sitting in a chair, alone in a cell, with cement walls and cement floors and fluorescent lights that sting his tired eyes. They buzz. The sound is drowned out by people walking in and out of the jail, police talking, drunk people and others mumbling to themselves.
He knows why he’s here. It replays in his head, over and over. The sound of gunshots, the squeal of tires, the sound of sirens, so many of them, blaring out along the highway. His ears seem to ring despite the hours that have passed.
This is temporary. Soon, he knows, he’ll be back to square one.
Was it worth it?
B.
Light and B meet up everyday for the next few days. It’s always the same restaurant, and the same booth, with varying waitresses, the same water, and the same man sat across from him. Papers have started making their way onto the booth. B looks at them with an intensity Light hasn’t seen before, other than in one person.
The one person they’re trying to take down.
“What’s your connection to him, anyway?” Light asks at this meeting, because for all he knows, this could be as impersonal as flicking one’s cigarette ashes on the floor. He watches B do this as he takes a sip off his water.
“Oh, that’s a little personal, isn’t it? Let’s just say we grew up together.” B replies.
Light feels a jolt go through him; he didn’t know this. Not the specifics, at least. Proof of his name was enough to go through with this arrangement. “You grew up together? Then why are you doing this?”
“That’s really none of your business,” he snaps. “You’re paying me for a service. Be grateful it’s on the table.”
Which, Light supposes, is fair. He looks down at the newspaper in front of him, its headline emblazoned on the front cover:
L IN CONNECTION WITH INTERPOL; CRACKDOWN ON KIRA GROUP COMING.
3.
L Lawliet.
B hadn’t heard the name in years. Rather, he chose to ignore it, because seeing it now and again in the newspapers or on tv really didn’t help his case.
Too many years were spent left alone in that house. And then, alone in L.A., and then, around the world. And now, sitting in a cell, he counts on his fingers how many times he’s spent his days alone, thinking about him, and thinking about all the fucked up things that led to this point.
He continues to wonder if it was worth it. He wonders if things could have been different, if L had just listened to him, had stayed, and had not pretended that B just didn’t exist after everything that happened in the house.
L is dead.
L is dead because of him. No longer is the World’s Greatest Detective but a corpse in the ground; and here he is, stuck in prison for it, because everyone knows he did it. They saw it. At least, everyone who knew who L really was knew it was him. He hasn’t seen the news at all, and probably won’t. He hopes to God, or the Devil, or any other force out there that can hear him, that L–or his place–doesn’t happen again.
C.
Light Yagami has his ducks in a row.
As a part-time investigator himself, he’s learned to always be one step ahead of the game. He’s learned to pay attention to his surroundings, to organize his thoughts before he speaks, to look at things from all sides. L got involved in the Kira Group case alongside him and the rest of the department he was working in, over in Japan. The L. The one that’s solved countless crimes around the world, some of the hardest, all under a pseudonym. For him to get involved meant he had his suspicions, and he knew where to look; in the very place where the police weren’t looking.
Light Yagami has played his cards right; working with groups like Yotsuba and third-parties, such as The Shinigami. Working between them, they’ve obtained quite a bit of money–here and there, of course, and Light turns a blind eye to the way the money is obtained. He’s only in control of how and where the money goes, of course. The rest is up to Ryuk, to gain it, while the accounts are hidden between Yotsuba’s various company expenses and profits. It works. So much, in fact, that they were able to transfer billions upon billions within a matter of months.
He isn’t sure what caught L’s eye. Maybe it was a fuck up on Ryuk’s part, or something between Yotsuba, or maybe it was the sudden influx of profit and stocks and the company doing “well” on an international level. Maybe that was it. Light wouldn’t be surprised.
Light isn’t greedy.
Light is, simply, bored.
It was never his intention to get L onto this case, but it makes for extra fun, he supposes. Doubling and tripling and quadrupling the work he usually does for the Kira Group, all for the sake of laughs, while dollar bills light up in the other’s eyes. And he knows he won’t be caught until L can connect him to any of these groups, which he never will.
Let him have his suspicions. Light knows he’ll get off scot-free.
4.
B remembers the first time he met L.
It was summer, and he was just a kid. Small, maybe around ten, tired from the flight, gripping balling his fists into the sleeves of his shirt. Summer here was colder than home. The mansion was somehow even colder.
It was nighttime. B doesn’t remember the exact time, but he was hungry. He didn’t go down for dinner; instead, he sat at his bed, looking at his minimal belongings. This was his room, now. This was his new home, but it didn’t feel like it. Nothing felt right. Not the windows, not the furniture, not the smell. It was unsettling, being here; like his whole life had been uprooted.
It had, but not because of the change in home.
He refused to think about it. Instead, B trotted out of his room, trying to be as quiet as possible. It was past curfew, and he didn’t want to get in trouble on his very first day. His stomach growled, but he didn’t know where the kitchen was; it wasn’t shown to him on his little tour around the house. He assumed it was past the dining room, somewhere downstairs, and after a little bit of wandering, he found it.
He found another boy there, too. With the man who had picked him up and showed him around. Maybe he was also new. He was eating dinner, soup, at a small table. The elder man smiled; he ladled another bowl for B, setting it across from the other boy.
Despite how unsettling the day had been, it was comforting. It could be home.
Things weren’t supposed to end up like this.
D.
Light can feel L on his heels. He’s uncomfortably close to the end of this, and it’s suffocating. And thrilling. Scary, but electrifying; being in the same room as him, knowing what he knows, but knowing there’s nothing he can do about it just yet.
L knows of The Shinigami Group. He’s asked about Ryuk, and has started researching who he is. There’s only so long until contact is made, and Light knows his connection is fairly solid, but not enough; if Ryuk goes down, so does he, and so does Yotsuba. He needs to do something. Anything.
Contact with B is a blessing in disguise. He doesn’t know who this B person is, but he claims to know L. He knows enough information that catches Light’s eye; details about his aliases, specific cases, his appearance, even knowledge of Watari’s role. It intrigues Light, because he isn’t sure what this person could possibly want from him, or why he’s contacting him.
He says he can help. He knows L is close to solving this case. Let him help.
Light books a trip to California. It’s sudden, but he says that between school and work, he’s really stressed out. His dad understands, even defends him; he’s working too hard on this case he’s not even technically being paid to do, while trying to figure out how to manage school in between. He needs time to himself to sort things out, and maybe a trip out by himself is what he needs. He wants to visit the forests up north, and maybe explore some of the other cities. A two week trip should be enough time for that.
So he goes. He spends part of the first week up in the Redwoods, goes down to San Francisco, and eventually gets to Los Angeles.
This means, when L expects him back at headquarters by the weekend, that he really only has seventy-two hours to finalize things with B. They need to settle on a plan.
“Here’s how it’s going to work,” B starts, sitting across from him in that same booth. Light thinks he must be sweltering under that leather jacket; it isn’t exactly cool in here. “I come back to Japan with you on an earlier flight. You need to find a way to get L out of headquarters. You know, he’s secretly an adrenaline junkie. Get him into the action. Did you already plan on the Yotsuba thing?”
Light nods. He looks down at his watch. Back at B. “Higuchi is greedy, it’ll take no time for him to want to get extra money. I just have to dangle it in front of him in just the right way.”
“Perfect. Arrange it so Higuchi will meet with…whoever, I don’t really give a fuck. Just get him at this location,” he insists, pointing at the Port of Tokyo on the map, “and L will eventually get there, too. I’ll do my job accordingly.”
“Right.” Light responds. “I would like to know more details about that, if you don’t mind.”
Dramatically, B sighs. “Don’t worry yourself. Nothing that a bike and a gun can’t take care of.”
5.
B is ready.
Light is ready.
It’s the day of. Light’s been on edge all day. The whole group has been on edge; they all know they’re on to something big, and they’re about to crack it.
L’s learned of Higuchi, of Yotsuba, of the laundering. At least, part of it, but Light knows better than anyone else here this is just a big red herring. He really thought L would know better. He supposes not, because here he is, taking the bait. Is it for show? Does he really believe it?
He doesn’t know.
It’s close to midnight, and Aizawa and Ide have been tracking Higuchi all day, between the live feed on their screens to monitored calls (thanks to Wedy, who was only there for a few days). L climbs into the front seat on the passenger’s side, where Light can drive.
Light starts driving to the location. L sits, hands gripping his knees, tense. Police are starting to arrive towards the location; they’re receiving live updates about their statuses throughout.
“Heading south, about twenty minutes from location,” Light says into the receiver.
“Got that. We’re watching Higuchi right now.” Aizawa’s voice reports. “There doesn’t seem to be much going on.”
L hums. Light grips the steering wheel.
“We have enough evidence to arrest him already,” Light says. “Why are we holding off?”
“We need sufficient, hard evidence. This will be enough.” L grits.
“The bank statements aren’t enough?”
B was right. L is an adrenaline junkie. Light sees the way his eyes change, and he knows this isn’t just for evidence; it’s so he can say he did it. So he can say he was right. He caught one of the largest white collar criminals the world has ever seen.
Light looks in the rearview mirror. He sees the bike. He hears a shot. L looks in the side mirror, and sees the same.
“We’re being followed.”
“Shit,” Light mutters. He speeds up, trying to weave between traffic. His heart is racing. He’s trying to stay calm. “Do you think–”
Another shot. This one hits the car.
L reaches into his pocket and grabs his gun. “Keep driving.”
He leans out the window.
Light hears a shot.
And then, L slumps.
E.
B realizes, far too late, that working with Light was the worst possible thing he could’ve done.
He sees it from behind the bars of his cell. Sentenced to life, sitting in San Quentin State Prison. Found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He’s not surprised in the slightest. He held up his end of the deal.
Light didn’t.
Instead, he let him be arrested. Had his team follow him, get him arrested, extradited back to the States. He got his money, but not for long. He sits alone, biding the rest of the time he has on Earth, eating shitty prison food and fighting with inmates and ending up in solitary for a few weeks. He watches stupid reruns of Law and Order and reads books and occasionally steals a newspaper off of his cellmate.
That’s how he sees Light Yagami come up in the world. He sees him becoming what L used to be. He reads about how Yotsuba was dissolved, but other companies–smaller ones, like Yotsuba once was–grow into the large, influential entities they are. It’s because of him. All of it.
He thought he got what he wanted. It was just another way for business, and it shouldn’t have been personal, but oh, it was. He knew that as soon as he pulled the trigger, as soon as he met Light Yagami at that stupid little restaurant in that stupid, sticky booth.
B didn’t want that. He needed something from L, something permanent to soothe the pain of everything between them, but death was something that stuck; the bullet, an indefinite solution, holding his anger, his resentment, his grief and sadness.
He’s paying for it, now. He knows that well enough.
So B sits.
He thinks of the watch Light Yagami wore.

Hit me with your best shot
Tumblr media
A/N: Hey! I saw the #WritersWednesday challenge on @autumnleaves1991-blog blog and thought it was an amazing opportunity to let the creativity flow and though I just started showing my works on here I guess giving it a chance wouldn't hur anybody and maybe some of you would enjoy this as much as I did writing it. And on that note, I'd like to thank every writer on here because your works have helped me a lot during these weird times; and of course speacilly to you @autumnleaves1991-blog for this and your "You're my best friend" series that made me cry, yearn (so much yearning) and loved every single minute of it, thank you!
Pairing: Javier Peña x Female character ( I decided to leave her very undeterminated as it's narrated on Javi's perspective I decided to use she/her pronouns, but I guess you could read it as a f!reader?)
Summary: Post-season 3, Javi and the character go on a date to Laredo's funfair (You could read this as a small piece on its own or as a part of the series I'm currently writing; if you're interested is on my blog and I haven't posted much since I opened it)
Warning: None (let me know if I should mark something) fluff! maybe some kissing...
Another thing! I've just finished this, so brace yourselves for some mistakes and mispellings, sorry
(I was listening to Kacey Musgraves while writing this, if you want to add more fluff to it)
She’s lovely with that white summer dress, she’s tapping her feet nervously looking around the street waiting for his car to arrive, but Javi is parked on the side of the road chewing a nicorette that has already lost all its taste. He observes how she peeks at her watch. He’s already late and doesn’t know what would make him feel any more terrible: standing her up or going on a date with her like an old creep.
Come on, Peña he urges himself to make a decision, but before he can make up his mind, he hears the door unlocking.
“Hey! I thought something had caught you up” she smiles and any doubts he had had been lifted. Gosh she’s pretty
“Sorry, I’m late I had...” he can make up any excuse and he feels he’s just smiling like an idiot.
“Don’t worry” she seats and adjusts her dress shyly “I see we’re making progress” she motions to his mouth
“Oh, yeah, I’ve been very good.” Javi says proudly and follows the road full of car towards the fair “I haven’t had a smoke in...a month, I think”
“Congrats!” she cheers “You deserve a reward then” she grins
“Sure?” he smirks eying her briefly not losing the sight of the road
“Whatever you want” she nods
“But a cigarette, of course”
“Obvs” she chuckles
“Then I better think for a really good reward, I deserve it”
“Yep”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She’s talking about the first time she came to the funfair being a child. Javier is listening partially; part of his focus is on everybody around them. It feels like all Laredo is there and they had been stopped a few times already by people that wanted to shake his hand and thank him for his service; and Javi starts to feel like the music is too loud, there’s too many people around them and that he doesn’t want to hear the word “hero” anymore. So he tries really hard to look at her, to concentrate his mind on how she interrupts her speech when she looks directly at him, how she blushes, how the warm breezes moves the baby hairs that frame that beautiful visage, how her lips shine with that chapstick she uses and that he’s dying to taste.
“Anyway we can do any ride but that one” she points at the big one in the middle that spins fast creating a wave of screams and laughter every time it makes a round “Unless you want me to puke all over your pretty plaid shirt”
“You like my shirt?” he smirks
“Yeah” she tucks a lock of her hair behind her ear “You look like a real cowboy” she adds. Her smile is brighter than any of the thousand small lights that illuminate the fair.
“I like your dress” Javier leaves his hand hang languidly close to hers until their skin brushes against each other. When he sees she doesn’t recoil, he grabs her hand locking his fingers with hers.
He can sense her nervousness, but hopes it’s the good kind. The exact same feeling he has at the moment, those soft palpitations that he hasn’t felt in years; the butterflies. Eventually she answers his compliment:
“Thanks, it was just 10$” instantly she looks down at her feet “God! I’m terrible at this”
“At what?” the people look at him and then at her, and then their gaze is fixed on their intertwined hands. Javi knows that the rumors are already spreading and hopes that whatever she’s going to hear about him in the next few days doesn’t ruin this.
“Dates...flirt...this” she points at him and then herself
“I cannot believe that” he counters
“Seriously? hey your dress is pretty; yes it cost me ten dollars” she mimics
“I thought it was cute”
“Cute?” she raises her right eyebrow
“Yes, you’re cute” Javi maintains
“You too” she admits
“Me?”
“Yeah! A pretty cute cowboy in plaid” she laughs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She makes him forget about this damn town, even Colombia and everything that happens seems a billion years away. If the people around them bother her, she doesn’t say. She doesn’t speak with him like anybody in town after he’s been back. For her it’s just Javi, and this Javi can have fun: he has shared a cotton candy with her, he has done some of the strongest rides even if his back is killing him, he has hold her waist when she jumped and screamed on the Tunnel of Terror and then laughed out loud when they got out.
“Javi!” she calls “We forgot about your reward for your first month without a smoke” she holds his hand and stars running towards the shooting gallery.
“You have five shots to win one of our wonderful set of prices. You just have to hit the little birds once”
The targets come and go up and down on the wheel, the paint on them is chipped, testimony of a long life in these funfairs and many missed shots. She takes one of the guns and closes one of her eyes aiming towards the wooden forms that spin on the wheel.
“Take a look of the plushies, cowboy, I’m gonna win you one” she says cockily
“Yeah, sure” he scoffs
“What? you don’t think I’m capable?” she turns towards him, gun still in her hand
“Wow, first of all, never point to somebody with a gun” Javi grabs the barrel and pushes it downwards “even if it’s not real, and second, open both of your eyes to aim” he explains
“Yes, sir. I forgot you were an agent. I better follow your orders, then” she winks at him and with a deep breath resumes her posture to take her first shot. Failing.
“Shit” she grunts “Have you chosen?” she points to the wall on the right full of stuff toys
“Erm...Does it matter?”
“Absolutely, come on, it motivates me”
The toys are horrendous; surely they’ve been doing their round around every fun fair in Texas for ages.
“Okay, one of the teddy bears” he agrees with a shrug
“No! no! be more specific” she scolds “Do you want the big one? the white one with the red bowtie? the brown with the small farmer hat? Or...Look!” she jumps excitedly “There’s a cowboy one, I’m gonna get you the cowboy” she nods and tries a second time, missing.
Javi mocks her and leans on her shaking in laughter.
“Yeah, really funny. Why don’t you try then?” she passes him the gun. After he has collected himself, he adjusts his posture and aims. Nothing.
She crosses her arms over her chest and observes him with an amused grin.
He doesn’t wait longer until he tries again and misses.
“You only got one left”
“Say goodbye to your teddy bear, cowboy” she whispers in his ear. Her sweet perfume and her voice distract him briefly. For a second he wants to throw the gun away and take her in his arms at last.
Javier shots again
“No luck today, sir, if you want to try again is three dollars”
Javi refuses the man with a gesture; she doesn’t say a thing for a minute, but then snorts and cries in laughter
“You’re lousy shot!” she screams
“You missed too” he defends
“Yeah, two shots, and you three, but who of us is a well trained agent, huh?” she sassed
Javi bites his lip, both hands on his hips; he knows there’s no way to defend his shitty shots.
“I still gained a reward though” he gazes at her
“Yeah, that’s true. What do you want then? I still have a few of dollars on me if you want a sundae or something”
“No, not that” he walks towards her and she instinctively recoils until she’s against the tent of the shooting gallery “I want something sweeter” he places his hands on her waist.
“Wh-hat?”
He bends and holds her at the same time, saving the height difference between them. He just brushes his lips against hers at first until she sighs and comes closer to him standing on her tiptoes. Javi deepens the kiss savoring the fruity chapstick she wears. Her lips are soft and sweet as he has imagined since he met her, her soft moans are music to his ears and he wants to hear more.
“Wow, you’re an incredible kisser, Javi Peña, but a terrible shot” she assures.

I have OPINIONS
If Game Changers say we like something, we’re “being fake” and “afraid to lose our title”. If we say we don’t like something, we’re “being ungrateful” and “shouldn’t be allowed to represent the company”.
Whatever about all that, I have opinions about this anniversary business and tbh my tongue hurts from biting it. So what the hell, have my opinions that literally no one asked for 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media
Let’s get one thing straight first, I don’t blame the Sims Team for any of this. We all know the Sims Team has a budget to work from that EA give them, and we all know that budget is FAR lower than any of EA’s other franchises. So I’m guessing what we got is exactly what the budget allowed for, which is just sad.
I don’t hate the hot tub, it’s a cool object with some nice swatches, but it’s an object we already have. It’s literally just one of the other hot tubs with a roof over it, which as Fab Flubs proved, can be done already without that “new” hot tub. There’s been a disturbing habit from the Sims Team lately of recycling objects for new packs, but to do this for something that’s supposed to be a thank you to the community that’s supported them for so long?! Not okay. And if they were going to give us a hot tub anyway, why didn’t they make it a heart-shaped hot tub for nostalgia, but this is all besides the point.
I really just want to know who approved this! Who was sitting in a meeting and going “A hot tub we’ve already used but for base game and with a roof and some lights? Nailed it. They’ll love it.” Were they high?! Or did they just forget completely and got to the day before the anniversary and had to scramble to come up with something? Who thought it would be a good idea to take a hero object from a previous pack and make it base game?
If you don’t know what a hero object is, it’s the object in a pack that the team generally spend the most time on, it’s the one object they know people want the most and will buy the pack just for that one item. For example the murphy bed from Tiny Living, the washers/dryers from Laundry Day, the photo studio from Moschino, the climbing wall from Fitness Stuff, the bowling lane from Bowling Night, etc etc. Think about it, how many people would have bought Perfect Patio if it didn’t have the hot tub? I would have, but I’m stupid when it comes to buying ALL packs, that’s well established lol Don’t get me wrong, it’s really cool that those that haven’t bought the pack can now use hot tubs, but for those that bought the pack specifically for that hero object, it’s a slap in the face.
Second, and this is my biggest issue with this whole thing, IT’S THEIR 20TH ANNIVERSARY. There are so many people that are like “you don’t give other people gifts on your birthday, do you?” No I don’t, but I’m not a multi-billion dollar gaming company in an industry where one franchise reaching 20 years is a MASSIVE deal! Most franchises don’t last past 5 years and those that do make a huge deal about every year they make it to after that.
Take Blizzard for example, World of Warcraft just made it to 15 years and they went big. Not only did their anniversary celebration last from November to January, but they opened up old raids for higher level players, which had higher drop rates for some long sought after mounts during the celebration and when completed gave you an achievement that awarded you with a guaranteed mount that looks like Deathwing, a raid boss from one of the first expansions (hello nostalgia!), and they opened up an old battleground that when completed could earn you two other new mounts. They also sent out celebration packages to every single character’s mailbox (not just every player, but every single character... each player is allowed 50 characters per account btw) that contained a 15% increased xp and rep gain token that lasted for the duration of the anniversary celebration AND a cute little battle pet that again, was inspired by another old raid boss, Nefarian. And on top of all of that, you were also able to purchase goodies from previous anniversary celebrations from an NPC for those two months of the celebration.
I dunno about you, but to me that’s a crazy amount of nostalgia and goodies, and Blizzard always celebrate their anniversaries in this kind of style, even the ones that aren’t “major” milestones.
So why isn’t EA making a big deal about the Sims 20th anniversary? In fact, literally everyone else is making more of a fuss about it than EA! There have been dozens of interviews with Game Changers and devs alike. The Fader, Playstation, MTV News, Polygon, EB Games, NVIDIA, Youtube Gaming, Discord, IGN, Need For Speed Spain, and hell even The Onion tweeted about it. Thousands of members of the community have shared their sweet nostalgic stories about how long they’ve been playing The Sims and what the games have meant to them.
And EA gives us a giveaway, a patch with a couple simlish songs, only 3 minor bug fixes and a recycled hot tub, a graphic that seems to be full of random numbers that mean nothing, and more ways to give them our money (new expensive merch that doesn’t even really scream “it’s our birthday!”). I’m sorry but where’s the nostalgia? Where’s the real thanks to the community that has supported them for 20 years? It’s just so disappointing, and yet, not surprising at all. It’s become normal to see something like this happen and think “Well, did we really expect anything different from them?”, which when you think about it, just seems so wrong.
This franchise has meant so much to so many of us, and it’s sad that we’ve been made to lower our expectations to the point where when something like this happens, we’re not even surprised anymore. We shouldn’t think that way about a game that we’ve grown up with, supported, and loved for 20 years.

I hope you don't mind me dropping asks on you every day? Anyways, a general question on modern-day attempts at using existing Pulp Heroes; do you think there is value in setting such tales in the modern day, rather than being period pieces? And if one does do so, do you think the best approach is to go full setting update, or to somehow translate the characters into the modern day, or to go the Legacy route?
I eagerly look forward to answering all kinds of questions, so don’t hesitate to send any my way!. Any feedback or excuse I get to go off on a subject is extremely appreciated.
Okay so on to your question:
Tumblr media
...Man, that really seems like the billion dollar question when it comes to the pulp heroes, isn’t it? The one at least that every conversation regarding adapting these characters, giving them reboots or new stories, seems to inevitably get stuck on: Should these characters be left as is, or modernized? Is there any point to trying to modernize them when often, at least in the public view, the only thing that separates them from being diet superheroes is their time period? Can these characters even survive as anything other than historical footnotes if they don’t move past the trappings of time holding them back? I’ve been very firmly on both sides of the question at different points and I think every answer inevitably brings up solutions and problems of it’s own.
For the moment, I’m going to start by saying that it’s something of a case by case basis. For example, The Scarlet Pimpernel is a timeless archetype, but one who’s specific characterization and history is so tied up to it’s time period that it’s far better to just reimagine the Pimpernel into a different character set in a different time, than to try and remove the Blakeneys from their time period, likewise with characters who cross into historical fantasy like Conan or western characters, where they have such strongly defined settings and playgrounds that you’d be losing much by removing them from it.
But on the other hand, you have characters like The Phantom, or The Avenger, who very clearly could exist at just about any point in time and don’t have any specific complications holding them to the 30s (in fact The Phantom was arguably designed for this, being he kickstarted the whole legacy superhero concept). A lot of the times, people seem to think or insist that certain pulp characters cannot be separated from their time periods, even when they were well on their way to doing so before some unfortunate cancellation. The Shadow, for example. Gibson had no problems updating the character’s adventures to the 60s for the Belmont series, and if The Shadow had maintained the kind of continuous publication that Batman and Superman had, I have no doubt whatsoever that nobody would even peg him as a character that belongs to the 30s and the 30s only, even if a lot of important aspects of his character are tied up in 30s America and The Great War and whatnot.
To try and streamline this response into something more general, I’m going to state that, yes, I do think it’s a case by case basis where some characters don’t work as well outside their time periods, and others should have left them ages ago, but in general? I think most of the pulp heroes would stand to benefit much more from being set, not just in modern times, but outside of time. Or at least, outside of a specific time period being something that defines and entraps them. Pretty much none of these characters, outside of historical fantasy examples like Conan or characters whose genres are locked into specific past time periods like cowboys, were intended to be period pieces, and yet that’s what they became, because time has been extremely cruel to the pulp heroes in many ways.
To bring up superheroes briefly, while I maintain that I think the real secret to making pulp heroes work and achieve success again is to distance them from superheroes, or at least the popular blockbuster superheroes, as much as possible, the superheroes have been around running the show for a while now and experimenting a lot as an inescapable facet of pop culture that's worked out monstrously well so far,nso clearly there’s a lot to learn there. The superheroes by and large belong in shared universes held tight by copyright where the weight of accumulating timelines inevitably forces them to either undergo reboots every couple of years, or endure constant quiet retcons snipping away at continuity so the cohesive “Superhero Universes” can function. But there’s no such thing as some big “Pulp Hero Universe” existing anywhere near the same capacity, there’s works gesturing to the idea like the Wold Newton Universe and LOEG and Dynamite’s shared author works largely scrapped together from separate sources all drifting apart, and most of these characters have largely fallen through the cracks of copyright law and into outright non-existence, or are halfway there. Very few modern instances of "cinematic universes" outside of the MCU work, so what we do instead is go the opposite route, closer to DC's "throw anything at the wall to see what sticks" approach.
What I’m getting to is, I could flip through the pages of Jess Nevins’s Encyclopedia of Pulp Heroes, pick about 3 or 5 random characters, put them in a story regardless of whatever time period they used to be a part of, and make something out of it, without anyone stopping to question “Hey, hold up, why is Joel Saber not on Victorian England? Why are Uirassu and Tom Shark in a loving relationship when they don’t even belong in the same decade? Why did you turn Allan Crystal into a talking sparrow? You are betraying the source material, these characters don’t work outside of it”. Because nobody has any idea who those guys are, they might as well be just original names I made up (I didn't, btw), and nobody has any reason to care, they will only care if they read good, engaging stories with strong characterizations that give them a reason to be invested. And if achieving that requires ditching adherence to the source material (which doesn’t even exist anymore for at least a third of these characters), I cannot see that as a bad thing.
He's nowhere near the ballpark of pulp heroes but I'm going to bring up King Arthur as an example because he’s been on my mind today.
Tumblr media
All of these, and countless others, are King Arthur. I’m no expert in Arthuriana, but from what I’ve gathered, I’d make a pretty good guess that one of the main reasons why King Arthur has been able to endure so strongly, and have so many variations that we have an entire area of study dedicated just to untangling those messes we call Arthuriana, has less to do with his historical or mythological importance (you hardly see that many stories about Cú Chulainn), but because the lore and imagery and events surrounding King Arthur have so utterly transcended the source material that people still dispute what the source material even was, or if he was a real person, or if he was created by the Welsh and stolen by Brits, and etc, and because he's completely free for any writers and artists to mold and use to anything they see fit.
King Arthur is not so much a character as much as he’s a sandbox that literally anyone can play in and reshape as they see fit, with no shortage of existing events and characters and magical items that you can treat as either essential staples, or guidelines and suggestions at best. I have three separate ideas for King Arthur as a big shark man in a greaser outfit who yields an oversized hair comb with fishhooks attached as Excalibur, one where he’s a monstrous dragon who sleeps in the ruin of his former kingdom guarding the only remaining memory of Guinevere left, and one where he’s a disembodied consciousness inside a giant mechanical bear. I could pick any of these and make a story out of them, or insert these into a story, any time I want, and nobody could stop me.
Point is, I think a lot, even most, of the pulp heroes would benefit from having some kind of “no-holds-barred, just do anything you want out of whatever you find interesting about the original” approach, a lot more so than the superheroes already do, because if there’s a single group of characters nowadays that best embodies an “anything goes” approach, a group that is almost entirely in public domain nowadays save for it’s biggest icons and therefore is already available for people to take and spin any way they want, it’s the pulp heroes. These characters have been in stasis for so long, or all but faded into nothingbbut mere footnotes in encyclopedia or records in libraries not even available online, and sometimes not even that. Most of their fanbases have largely died off and they are nowhere near close to gaining new ones, and our changing media tastes call for contrasts as much as it calls for profit. No sensible person would invest in most of these properties as they stand now, which is precisely what ultimately gives them the freedom to be anything at the conceptual stage. The only thing that really, really holds them back is time, which, again, has really not been kind to them. So why adhere to it? Screw time and whatever power it’s long held over these characters, let’s get weird with it.
Tumblr media
So if I have to choose between “full setting update, translating the characters to modern day, or the Legacy route”, all three of which are perfectly viable depending on the character, I think the best option, generally speaking, is full setting update, if only because the setting should never be the main priority in the first place. The setting, like everything else, is there to serve the story and the author’s needs and wants, and I’m of the opinion that the setting should always primarily exist in service of the characters, as my writing and my favorite writings are all character centered above all else.
I think putting the pulp heroes in radically different time periods and settings could even yield interesting results. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal stars a caveman Conan/Tarzan type protagonist interacting with dinosaurs, Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta is a Shadow-esque character set loose in a dystopian future, Grendel is the Fantomas of 1980s New York, and so on. The precedent is there and I think it can be taken much further.
Really I think a lot of the problems and arguments that have arisen over the years in regards to adapting the pulp heroes often result of people overthinking things, lord knows I do enough of that all the time. I really think it’s just something that only seems impossible because it hasn’t really been done yet. Of course, in regards to The Shadow I obviously have a whole different text as to whether I’d want him to be adapted or not, but in general, my ultimate response to what you asked is just do whatever you think is gonna make the story better and the characters more interesting. A.K.A, do whatever you want.
