Ellie pretends she doesn’t notice Joel when she sees him at the stables. She clears her throat, petting Shimmer’s mane as a means to ground herself, to soothe her anxiety. She closes her eyes for a moment as she hears his heavy footsteps trailing behind her.

“Hey, kiddo.” Joel’s voice is softer than usual, a hesitant tone full of reverence. He knows not to corner Ellie and to tread carefully - her defensive nature easily triggered.

Ellie turns around and makes eye contact briefly, nodding at him in acknowledgement. She swallows, trying to get her tight vocal folds to work. “Hey.”

“So… that girl. You datin’ her?” He asks gently, his eyes focused on Shimmer, mirroring Ellie’s discomfort in this vulnerable conversation.

Ellie shuffles in place, her eyes meeting his form, studying him while he’s not looking. “Yeah?” She whispers with trepidation, nodding to herself and slowly trailing her gaze to her feet.

Joel nods, looking back at Ellie. “Well… that’s good. Long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters.”

Ellie’s eyes snap to his, searching his face for sincerity. Her shoulders relax when she finds nothing but acceptance and warmth. She nods, the corner of her lips slightly curling. “Okay, thanks.” She whispers, the heel of her converse digging into the dirt.

“Alright, then.” Joel says with a small smirk, clapping Ellie’s shoulder gently before turning around to walk away. Ellie lets out a sigh of relief as she watches him, the fear and uncertainty that plagued her now no longer a worry.

“Okay, serious. Whatever you say.” He smiles to himself, hiding it with the rim of his owl mug.

The door clicks shut, and Joel chuckles to himself. Then it opens again, only for it to be slammed shut.
