If anyone remembers The Life of Jameson Jackson, I want you know I've been thinking about Oliver and Winston all week. They got to grow old together and after decades of having to hide from everyone, they moved to Illinois where they finally could be out and be in close proximity to people like them. They held hands in public and even kissed out in the open during the Chicago pride parade of 1974. I am so fucking emotional over these OCs from a fic I wrote nearly 5 years ago.

One of my favourite things about writing Jameson is checking how a certain word/phrase is signed, only to realise "Oh nice, I know how to sign that now." The only problem is practice. I learned how to sign the birthday song in ASL back in January, thanks to something TLoJJ-related. Barely remember it now. During JJ's week, I planned to spend the summer learning BSL. Never got around to it. BUT there will be a society for learning sign at my uni so... maybe? Just gotta not drown in science first.

For me, the way you make Jameson speak is distinct. It's clear you spent time looking up phrases/vocabulary from the period to make him sound more authentic. Honestly, I was more focused on making events/life/prices historically accurate when writing TLoJJ than his voice. Also, Schneep speech. I love how you include him speaking German sometimes (especially when English is the least of his concerns at that moment). I do wonder if you can actually speak German or whether you use the internet.
Finding characters’ voices and making them distinct is one of my favorite things to do because of how I write the good doctor. It’s so much fun!

well, happy new year to you from my time zone! (though it's only 11 here) your inventiveness and devotion to long term creative projects has always astounded me (i still think of your jameson jackson series from time to time haha) can't wait to see where 2023 takes you!

Thank you for that, it's really nice to hear :). This time last year, I wasn't expecting any spontaneous aus to come at me with a steel chair yet here we are. Maybe I'll write something or come up with a wip idea that takes me by surprise like Regicide did in 2022. And yes, TLoJJ will always have a special place in my heart. I should read it again sometime. ...I have also just realised it will be 5 years old in October. What the hell.
I hope whatever you plan to achieve this year goes well too. I hope you have a good 2023 in general.

TLoJJ-Hamilton parallels
Since I have mentioned there being parallels before, I think it’s high time to actually put them down.
That Would Be Enough - William and Florence Jackson when they discover they are going to be parents. William was a labourer in a factory responsible for shipbuilding while Florence was an educated woman from a family of comfortable wealth. They would definitely struggle to financially support a child. Obviously, you’re probably aware that Harvey and the rest of their future children grew up in poverty. c. 1879
Dear Theodosia - Jameson with his kids. But I guess in this instance, Anthony specifically. Dude was constantly swearing he would do everything he could to ensure his children didn’t grow up like he did. 1912 onwards
Laurens’ Lament - Siobhan announcing Harvey’s death. Just like Alexander, Jameson probably would have gone ‘Thanks. Do you mind leaving me alone for a while?’ 1917
(First) Burn - While Jameson never cheated on Siobhan, he did also put his family through a period where their reputation/image suffered because of his actions. Siobhan did her best to be understanding but for a couple years following Harvey’s death, Jameson did become a colder person and more irrational in his creative decisions. At times, she did become fed up with him and probably went off on him. Also, just like Eliza was around the time of the Reynolds Pamphlet being written and published, Siobhan was pregnant during this time. Twice, actually. c. 1917-1920
Congratulations - I can see Mabel in Angelica’s position where she is calling her little brother the hell out while he goes off the rails after Harvey died. I always liked Mabel because she tended to be even more level headed than her siblings. c. late 1910s
Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story - Siobhan continued Jameson’s work with Thaddaeus House after his death. Even added on to that work by campaigning for ASL to become a language taught at school and establishing a couple of centres in New York and Los Angeles for people to learn ASL. Lived another 52 years following her husband’s death. 1932 onwards
Blow Us All Away - Henry and Theodore honestly had a good futures in front of them in medicine and finance respectively. And then the US entered WW2, leading to Theodore getting drafted then ultimately their deaths. That bit where Alexander gives Philip his gun while advising him to be careful? Yeah, nobody in the Jackson family would have been okay with the brothers heading to Europe. The closest it would get to that scene is Henry kinda relenting and choosing to join his brother in an attempt to keep him safe. c. late 1930s-1944
Satisfied - What are you going to do when you’re a young gay man in love with your childhood friend at the turn of the ‘40s? Encourage him to be happy with your sister, of course. As a good friend of the groom and brother of the bride, Oliver was the best man at Winston and Sophia’s wedding. That day was a rough one for him. c. early 1940s

I’m currently answering an ask about Jameson’s potential life after the end of TLoJJ and now I can’t stop imagining him as an older man, jotting down scenes in a notebook while at his desk. His hair is likely greying and/or receding. Plus I can see him wearing glasses while concentrating on his work.
I want him to be real so bad.

Day 2: Kiss
The first time, it is cautious. Nobody can see them out in the woods. Nobody should be able to. Still, this is new territory for both of them. Winston may have kissed a girl before but he's never kissed Oliver prior to this moment. Oliver hasn't kissed anyone outside of his family in general. It's awkward and there's is certainly room for improvement. It's a good thing they'll have the rest of their lives to master the skill.
They go wild in the privacy of Oliver's New York apartment. The two of them can be as affectionate as they'd like there. Blinds drawn and door locked, no-one can disturb them. Hands are free to go wherever they like. It doesn't matter if is back when Oliver was a student or later once Winston is his brother-in-law. This is their time to not feel like they're in hiding. Mary is blissfully ignorant and Sophia is somewhat encouraging it.
Life living under the same roof as exclusive partners is amazing. Kisses prove distracting while preparing dinner, they don't last long enough whenever one of them is leaving for work and at times the goodnight kiss acts as the main incentive to get a reluctant partner to head to bed. They wouldn't have it any other way.
Kissing in public for the first time is frightening. After decades of fearing arrest, they're still not sure about it. Still, they specifically came to Illinois to live somewhere they could be out as gay men. They had friends in the community who'd displayed their amorous affections publicly and gotten away with it. Besides, it wasn't like Oliver and Winston hadn't held hands while in town. That had gone well. Why shouldn't they take things further with a kiss? And Chicago Pride Parade 1974 was the perfect place to do so. Sharing a rainbow flag, the two men in their late 50s win another small personal victory.
The last time is so mundane. It is a simple kiss goodnight. They've done it thousands of time over the course of their lives. A quick peck on the cheek is all Winston gets that night. He goes to sleep, blissfully unaware of the sorrow he'll begin experiencing the next day. The gratitude he was able to spend the majority of his life happy will arrive soon after.

Bloodbath
Oliver grabs a sword.
Florence bashes Josephine's head in with a mace.
Jacob snatches a pair of sais.
Harvey rips a mace out of Sophia's hands.
James, Jameson, and Theodore get into a fight. Theodore triumphantly kills them both.
David W, Clifford, and Nora work together to get as many supplies as possible.
Winston repeatedly stabs Sean to death with sais.
Hollenka grabs a jar of fishing bait while Anthony gets fishing gear.
Everyone else runs away from the cornucopia.
Day 1
Oliver makes a slingshot.
Nora chases Anthony.
Hollenka and Florence both see smoke rising in the distance, but decides not to investigate.
David W goes hunting.
Harvey and Pearl both receive fresh food from an unknown sponsor.
Michael searches for a water source.
Henry, Winston, William, Jacob, and Mabel hunt for other tributes.
Eileen tends to Siobhan's wounds.
Clifford runs away from Harriet.
Theodore defeats Sophia in a fight, but spares her life..
Night 1
Michael and Anthony sleep in shifts.
Eileen sets up camp for the night.
Jacob quietly hums.
William, Clifford, and Theodore sleep in shifts.
Sophia looks at the night sky.
Henry and Florence hold hands.
David W cooks his food before putting his fire out.
Oliver goes to sleep.
Pearl cries herself to sleep.
Hollenka screams for help.
Winston thinks about winning.
Mabel and Harvey talk about the tributes still alive.
Siobhan stabs Nora in the back with a trident.
Harriet receives a hatchet from an unknown sponsor.
Day 2
Harvey practices his archery.
Mabel, Hollenka, and Florence track down and kill Oliver.
Eileen spears Theodore in the abdomen.
Siobhan runs away from Henry.
Clifford scares David W off.
Harriet and Winston split up to search for resources.
Jacob attacks Pearl, but she manages to escape.
Michael constructs a shack.
Sophia begs for William to kill her. He refuses, keeping Sophia alive.
Anthony accidentally detonates a land mine while trying to arm it.
Arena Event
The arena's border begins to rapidly contract.
Siobhan pushes Pearl into the border while she is not paying attention.
Thinking they could escape, Winston and Michael attempt to run through the border together.
Sophia pushes Hollenka into the border while she is not paying attention.
David W restrains Clifford to a tree and leaves him to die.
Everyone else survives
Night 2
Harriet receives clean water from an unknown sponsor.
Harvey is awoken by nightmares.
Sophia pushes Florence off a cliff during a knife fight.
Siobhan, Eileen, and Henry cheerfully sing songs together.
Jacob receives a hatchet from an unknown sponsor.
Mabel tries to sing herself to sleep.
William is awoken by nightmares.
David W sets up camp for the night.
Day 3
Jacob tries to spear fish with a trident.
David W tends to Sophia's wounds.
William searches for a water source.
Mabel and Eileen work together for the day.
Harvey and Harriet split up to search for resources.
Siobhan receives a hatchet from an unknown sponsor.
Henry receives an explosive from an unknown sponsor.
Arena Event
The remaining tributes begin to hallucinate.
Mabel mistakes Sophia for a bear and kills her.
Henry and Eileen hug tracker jacker nests, believing them to be a pillows.
Harvey eats a scorpion, thinking it is a delicate dessert.
Everyone else survives
Night 3
Mabel tends to Harriet's wounds.
William cries himself to sleep.
David W, Jacob, and Siobhan sleep in shifts.
The Feast
The cornucopia is replenished with food, supplies, weapons, and memoirs from the tributes' families.
Harriet snaps Siobhan's neck.
David W kills Jacob with a sickle.
William kills Mabel as she tries to run.
Day 4
William scares David W off.
Harriet searches for a water source.
Night 4
David W defeats Harriet in a fight, but spares her life.
William climbs a tree to rest.
Day 5
David W stabs Harriet in the back with a trident.
William falls into a frozen lake and drowns.
The winner is David W from District 9!

Little Interruptions
Summary: As much as he loves them, Jameson's children sometimes have a habit of disrupting his work
This was inspired by a post I made after the latest bloopers video.
The first time is greatly unexpected. Well, as unexpected as a baby he knew was due soon could be. One word from Pearl and he's racing out of the studio with her. Through the streets they sprint. He pushes his lungs until he is sure they will implode on him. Pearl halts to ask if he is alright. No, no, don't worry about him. His wife is in labour with their first child and his sister scoured the studios on the hunt for him. Give him a moment to partially catch his breath. They continue running, eternally grateful Jameson's home wasn't further from the studios. Around the corner, partway down the street, through the door and- Oh. Oh, he's here already. A seat? Yes, thank you. He may collapse due to asphyxiation any moment now if he doesn't sit. Ah and who's this being brought to him? Hello Anthony. You are definitely worth indefinitely postponing production for.
Anthony had insisted on watching his father at work. He and Siobhan had agreed it shouldn't do him any harm. He just had to sit quietly and stay close to his mother. For a while, he had followed instructions. He was the best behaved two year old they could have hope for. Unfortunately, Siobhan had begun feeling peculiar recently, signs of a pregnancy as yet undiscovered. Feeling unwell, she lets go of his hand for a moment. Anthony takes the opportunity to ruin his father's take. Yes, I know it's exciting but Pops is working right now. Go take Ma's hand again. Mother and child return home while Jameson is left with an annoyed director for a sister. One day they will look back on Puppet Man as their big break. However, Pearl's debut as a director will never air if it doesn't reach completion. Alright, yes, let's go for another take, shall we?
He wakes to Clifford patting his face roughly. The tone of his voice doesn't come across as particularly pleasant either. His brother's expression hovering above leaves much to be desired. He doesn't even recall dozing off. He's sorry. It would seem that having four young children, two of whom were under the age of 2, was catching up with him physically. Being sleep deprived was not good for productions, he knows. Okay Cliff, he's aware, there's no need to remind him. How about we take five to grab ourselves coffee and then run it from the top.
He heard them running around as if the house were a playground. He catches his eldest sons playing tag in the halls. Stop, stop. Have you not noticed Sophia and Henry misusing the banisters? The four of you come here and calm down. Listen, where is Ma? The store? Okay. That is fine but he wishes she had given him a heads up before leaving. Right, can we agree to stay quiet for maybe an hour? It is incredibly important that he finishes this draft as soon as possible. If it's not ready by the end of the week, that allows him very little time for revisions. So, please, just an hour. That's all he asks. One single hour. Please behave yourself until your mother comes home. He just about manages 10 minutes of peaceful productivity before baby Theodore begins bawling. God damn it all.
Is everyone here? All five of you? Good. No, Sophia, put down that knife. Don't get ahead of yourself. He thinks they're short of a pen. Anthony, make sure your sister's enthusiasm doesn't lead to her injuring herself. He'll be back in a moment. Okay, everyone still in one piece? Looking across the table he smiles. They've occasionally served as the cause of major disruptions in the past. However, his children were old enough to help out with this. He's been excited for this ever since he thought of it. Right. Who's ready to help Pops with a picture?
