Singapore Nationals ITT 2023
Nationals ITT was initially set to take place in late June but was postponed due to SCF failing to request the road closure in time. I’d been peaking for that one so it was a bit of a shitter to see the training go to waste. It didn’t work out too bad as I was able to keep the TTT form for a few more weeks to make it to this race.
Training had been ok but I still couldn’t find motivation to really push in the way that I can in the TTT. Was also having an issue with the bike BB making noise like a MF - which 2 bike shops has failed to fix.
The race was at a reasonable 9am start so it at least wouldn’t be as face meltingly hot as the Team event was.
I rolled out a bit hot and spent the first 1km trying to cool my beans back to a more sustainable level. The wind was a hard side wind so both legs were pretty similar paced. With Naert in front & Janus behind, I didn’t catch my minute man and was lucky not to be caught. They ended up 2 and 1 respectively.
I ended on a 42.2km avg - good enough for 5th. Almost a minute off the win but overall relatively happy with the outcome.
Tour de Batam is next & looking forward to getting some bigger kms in on the road bike finally.

Rod Millen’s head turning Pikes Peak Toyota “Tacoma”.
New Zealand born Rod Millen is a racing legend having won the Pikes Peak time trial 5 times in his career as well as holding a record in his insane Toyota Celica. Today we’re here to talk about his Tacoma though, well, sort of. In 1998 Millen set out to break the Pike’s Peak record yet again with Toyota’s Racing Development (TRD) team backing him building what they called a Tacoma, even though it looked nothing of the sorts. Powered by a 1000 horsepower IMSA 503E race engine with power going to all four wheels, this thing could go 0-100 mph in 4.9 seconds… on dirt. Millen raced the iconic Tacoma from 1998-2000 at the Peak running nearly 10 minute flat times. The car was brought to Goodwood’s Festival of Speed a few times in the 2000’s but then sat dormant for many years. With the 100th anniversary of Pikes Peak being last year it was only right for Mullen, then aged 71, to dust off the Tacoma and put on a show.

Five Questions with... Matheus Macedo
Tumblr media
How did you get started in racing?
It all started with criterium racing in 2017 back when Kevin Abbate (ESP Timing) had his races in Tradewinds Park. A friend of mine suggested I join him to race and ever since I fell in love with the adrenaline of it and haven’t stopped. The majority of my life I grew up playing soccer up to college which made me a competitive athlete but then found a new profound love to riding my bike and wanted to channel my competitive side to racing and accepting new challenges. I was addicted to observing my progress and improvements.
Road, Gravel, or Mountain Biking?
I have raced in all three disciplines but after this past season, I began to drift more towards racing on the trails. As of now, my heart is set on racing MTB and this will be my main focal point. So far I have raced in road (CAT3) and MTB (Sport 19-29). I have proudly raced for several teams such as Interior Elementz (Alpha Cycling) from 2019 to 2020. As well as VivoSeaside from 2020 to 2021. I am currently with my personal sponsor 3R Cycling Experience since 2022. I’ve been more than grateful to be able to race and be well supported by these teams.
How did last season go for you – highs and lows?
Last season was different for me, I raced the hill top series by ESP Timing which was my one and only win on the road bike. I had a bad accident and desperately had to wait for new parts therefore putting me on standby to race on the road again. This incident is what brought me closer to my journey in MTB. As I started this journey, I began with a pretty bad crash that fractured my hip and couldn’t ride for a little over a month. Once I recovered I had two months before the Florida State Championship series started. I had a rocky start but after my 6th race I won (2 in the same weekend) and started to gain confidence. After those wins the rest was history,  I ended up winning the State Championship in the Base 19-39 category and the Coconut Cup series.
What’s next for you on the race calendar?
Excitingly enough, next race will be the Florida State Championship Criterium on the 15th of this month. Since the main MTB season is over, I am seeking to start working alongside a coach (still searching) to build on my strengths and work on my weaknesses to reach my future goals. Another important factor would be incorporating weight training to my schedule so I can be fully ready by September for the Florida State Championship Series in my new category.
What’s the one thing you want people to know about you?
One thing I want people to know about me is  that I’m just trying to be the best father I can be while finding time to train and show how much fun you can have on two wheels. I have learned the importance of finding balance between fatherhood and my responsibilities off the bike while still adapting to an adjusted regime for my training. I have a deep admiration for this sport and my goal is to show others that this is a great way to stay in shape, enjoy the outdoors, and disconnect. Whether you see me on the trails, road or even gravel don’t hesitate to say hello!

Singapore National Championship TTT 2023
First racing outing for the new Speed Concept & the training has been going pretty well. Am partnering with Dan Forster for the Men’s Masters Duo and we’ve been hitting 46km in our 2 test runs. With the excitement of race day and the full aero gear, I am (over) confidently predicting a 47km average!
As my usual Duo partner (Keiichi) is out with a busted shoulder, I went down an age category to partner with Dan in Masters. It has the added bonus of avoiding a crushing defeat from Poon & Steve R in the Seniors.
We were on at 11:55 in absolutely blistering heat. There were maybe 20 teams in Masters and we were last out on the road. In front of us was Junaidi Hashim who looked like our biggest competition.
Dan led us out and quickly got us up to a 47 average. The wind was on the side so speeds were relatively consistent both ways. Due to the sun, it was hard to see the Garmin so I wasn’t always clear on the speed. We traded turns for the first lap and could see we were catching Junaidi.
Lap 2 I was getting pretty fucked but we were still doing a 45-46 average. We caught our 2 minute men, Junaidi and then two further groups up the road. Dan was covering 70% of the work for the last lap and I was suffering at a 178 heart rate.
We ended with a 45.2 average in 28:15 - almost 2 minutes up on the nearest competition! A good day which would have been enough for Top 5 in Open.
Tumblr media
In the rest of the event, the boys were crushing the Open Quad before Poon punctured on Lap2. They ended up 3rd overall behind Mavs & Greyhounds. In Seniors, Poon & Steve beat the competition by over a minute even though it was only a 10km race!
ITT up next
