🖊🖊 tell me about Sara!
@mystery-salad
[cracks my knuckles OKAY SO Rosarott, rhododendron of the dusk, dreamer, soundless, the valiant and estranged: From the day he first woke from the dream, Sara was called to an unusual wyld hunt, one that he didn't understand the gravity of for some time. He wasn't tasked with turning the tides against the risen, fighting the dragons, nor aiding the people of his home against the nightmare court. Instead, he was drawn to another sylvari, one with a greater fate, to ensure that they succeed in the role given to them. He was naive but eager, and he gladly pursued his charge to fulfill his calling. It seemed a blessing, at the time: he was rather frail for a sapling, but this was important and well within reach. He would do anything to see them succeed. It wasn't enough. The problem was not that Sara was incompetent or unwilling, rather it was something entirely out of his control: the young valiant who was (rather famously, around the grove) entwined with the fate of the elder dragons had gotten cold feet and disappeared. Tikari had been rather outspoken about their reluctance, their distrust of the compulsion and their desire to decide their own direction, but it hadn't been taken seriously enough until they went soundless and left. With seemingly clear direction, Sara followed after them, time after time. All he needed to do was talk to them, right? But that didn't work, did he have to go with them? No, they disappeared again... he had to show them why it mattered. No, he had to bring them there himself. No, he needed to plead, but he just had to find them first. He needed to yell. He needed to fight. To force them into selflessness, so he could finish his calling even if they didn't want to. If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself. He had to do it. He couldn't. Years later, successes and failures, someone else took down that dragon but it isn't quite over. Now there's a new call, a different itch than before. Sara, following a lead on Tikari, travels reluctantly into the heart of the Maguuma. The voice grows louder.

RIBA reveals UK's best buildings for 2021
The Royal Institute of British Architects has announced 54 winners of the 2021 RIBA National Awards for architecture including a floating church, the MK gallery and a mosque in Cambridge.
Awarded annually since 1966, the RIBA National Awards celebrates the best buildings in the UK.
This year's 54 winning projects were chosen from the shortlist for the 2020 RIBA Regional, RIAS, RSUA, and RSAW Awards after last year's awards were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"Ranging from radical, cutting-edge new designs to clever, creative restorations that breathe new life into historic buildings, these projects illustrate the enduring importance and impact of British architecture," said RIBA president Simon Alford.
The Cambridge Mosque by Marks Barfield Architects was one of the 54 winners. Photo is by Morley von Sternberg
Included on the list are numerous educational projects, including the Centre Building at LSE by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners and the School of Science and Sport by OMA at Brighton College.
"There are a good number of well-designed school and university buildings that are powerful investments in the future, and I am sure they will inspire young people, their teachers and communities," said Alford.
"I am also thrilled to see many of these make creative use of existing structures. Well-designed education facilities should be the rule rather than the exception – every child deserves an effective learning environment, and these projects provide rich inspiration."
Grimshaw's Bath Schools of Art and Design was one of several educational winners. Photo is by Paul Raftery
Alford also drew attention to the number of projects that adapt and extend existing buildings.
These included the extension to the MK Gallery in Milton Keynes by 6a Architects (pictured top) and Grimshaw's renovation of its former Herman Miller factory into a building for Bath Schools of Art and Design.
"When a new building is essential, we need to make sure it will last and serve the future well – so it needs to be flexible and reusable," he said. "Long life; loose fit; low energy architecture is the present and the future."
"It is therefore very encouraging to see restoration and sensitive adaptation feature so prominently this year; with many buildings acknowledging their history, the needs of the present and the potential of their dynamic future," he added.

The 54 national winners form the longlist for the Stirling Prize – the UK's most prestigious architecture award. The Stirling Prize shortlist will be announced next week with the winner revealed on 14 October.

Clay shingles embed south London apartments into their red brick Victorian context
Working as client, architect and main contractor, Tikari Works‘ ambition for The Rye Apartments was to create a set of richly detailed apartments on an important corner site opposite Peckham Rye Park in south London. They began the project by extensively testing the building form against pragmatic issues of access to daylight, privacy and relationship to context. The formal testing resulted in two blocks, unified through their roof-lines and material qualities. A concrete plinth at ground level enhances the ‘sibling’ relationship between the buildings and strengthens the idea of a shared community of homes.
A facade of clay shingles embed the buildings into their red brick Victorian context. The shingles wrap the buildings in a way that is monolithic and sculptural. 10,000 handmade clay shingles were produced at the Petersen Tegl factory in Denmark for the project. An exposed cross-laminate timber structure is used to create natural and welcoming spaces whilst optimising construction time and minimising carbon emissions.
Delicate timber joinery infills the CLT frame creating spaces which are warm and domestic. Red Quarry tiles punctuate the timber volumes creating a common language between the inside and outside. A strategy of custom fabrication is employed to create variety and authenticity within the unit types, whilst still allowing the apartments to share a common DNA.
