"I think there's so much nuance to them and so much complexity that comes to people in real life around sexuality and finding themself, all of that kind of stuff."
“Around sex in particular and sexual relationships being shrouded and kind of fear for a man in that time, for tom for example, fear and shame and all these things, you don’t necessarily know that much about if you don’t encounter other homosexual men in that time."
“For someone like tom, it’s all of his feelings towards men, I would imagine, feel so foreign and so, yeah I think just any time it’s that complex and you’re getting to play with actual nuanced kind of human emotions, it’s really nice."

I think Tom's version of acceptance is a depressing one, he accepts that he is gonna deny this part of himself for a long time, it's a quiet acceptance between him and Marion and it wont be discussed, which is very... none of them were going to therapy were they? For me the story, the reason why it's so devastating, ultimately the story is about wasted time and this is the most devastating thing, time we cant control it, we cant get it back, in the end you think back, well I haven't died but... this i what we cant control. The whole thing is about wasted time and at the end it feels like a brief moment of acceptance which feels really wonderful but it is still laced with this devastating "oh if we were braver we would have had more time". Every piece of joy is laced with this other side to it.
