watching phineas and ferb as a kid, a teenager, and as an adult are three vastly different experiences

my brothers are at university now so sometimes I'll wait until I see them post about eating and randomly text them "having a cuck meal?" which could go terribly depending on the day although I do not care much about that

what is considered "beautiful" by society is inevitably sexist, racist, ableist, classist, transphobic, and bigoted. it targets and attacks any perceived difference, and it particularly villainizes women of color while co-opting aesthetics; as if features and cultural norms can be worn as accessories.

and the scary thing! you can see all of these things, know them to be true logically, and also know that you are treated better if you are perceived as beautiful. if you have ever been treated as "ugly", you know exactly how much society reviles you if you don't manage to scamper along and perform to their rules.

and how are you supposed to balance that? do you want a nose job to fix your broken nose, or have you just recently been seeing videos about how many people look better after nose jobs. do you want to lose weight to feel good, or is it that when you lose weight people treat you better. do you want to wear this outfit, or is it just the thing that's least likely to get you harassed. do you want to get lip injections for your reasons or is your whole reason that you don't feel beautiful unless you get those lip injections?

and the definitions shift. the goals get more specific. in the way that you only become aware of your tongue when someone mentions it; parts of your body are introduced as problems. i had never heard the term "hip dip" until about a year ago - and it was in the context of how to get rid of this. i'm 30, i know this shit is invented, and yet! i still find that strange voice saying but do you think someone is going to notice?

how the fuck am i supposed to say "this is my genuine choice i am making for my body" when i also know that years of my life have been spent socializing me to accept this as my inevitable fate? how do i know i'm actually doing this out of love for my body - or am i doing it for how i want others to see me, which will be lovely enough to feel loved? how am i supposed to recover when my unhealthy habits are seen as self-discipline but if i relax i'm openly mocked for "letting time win"? how the fuck am i supposed to say "i'm doing it for me" when i'm also very aware that i'm doing it to stop myself from being teased or demeaned? is it my choice if the other option is being bullied?

we are living in a hostage negotiation - either consent to the demands or spend the rest of your life being treated like you're a despicable person.

Fictives should always be mindful of good boundaries in fandom communities! 

Fictives should really not respond “aw thanks I really am great, huh” to perfect strangers who are just looking to talk about their blorbos. There’s a time and place, but fandom servers with singlets you don’t know are NOT the time and place.

Fictives need to develop a healthy distance from their canon source if they find themselves getting upset over fan opinion/fanworks/fandom in general.

However!

A fictive behaving as themselves is! NOT! Roleplaying!

Some fictives considers themselves just a template to project onto, and not that character at all, canon or otherwise! Cool.

Some fictives considers themselves a version of their source character, but not THAT canon person, while others consider themselves purely canon! Cool.

Some fictives feel they’re entirely a psychological manifestation, while others feel that they were transported here from somewhere that actually existed in the multiverse! Cool.

But it is absolutely NOT ROLEPLAYING if a fictive sees themselves as something other than “an introject based on fiction”. It is NOT harmful or wrong to treat a fictive as themselves, if that’s what they WANT you to do. 

(And not all fictives want to be called “introjects”, either. It’s not just a “DID/OSDD thing”. It’s not “like kinning”. But that’s another tin of beans, for another post.)

Anyways, tl;dr:

Please develop sensible boundaries, as a fictive, regarding fans and fandom.

Please also stop treating fictives like they’re not really who they say they are, that they’re delusional or roleplaying if they say otherwise. If they’re being creepy with boundaries, say something! But fictives aren’t harming anyone by existing, even if they want to be treated as “actually their source”.

My favorite Antonetta moment in Sword Catcher

One of the reasons that Antonetta is my favorite character is that nearly every piece of dialogue she has is calculated to direct a situation in a certain way, to gather information, and sometimes conveys hidden meanings with her words that give hints of her true intentions. I love the way we learn more about her character with subtle hints and implications. I think that there are two pieces of dialogue really give a great idea of who she is. When Kel asks Antonetta why she decides to hide her kindness on the Hill, she says:

"'Kindness and weakness are twinned, or are seen as such on the Hill,' she said. 'I recall long ago when Joss was kind. When Conor was kind. No longer. It is a defense as much as an affectation.'" - Sword Catcher, page 484.

Then, multiple chapters later during the Ascension Day party, Antonetta gets Kel (pretending to be Conor) alone, thinking that he is Conor of course. She is asking him to help her get out of a possible engagement with Artal Gremont, and she says:

"'You are kind,' she said. 'There are many who say you are not, but I know that you are. I know you can help.'" - Sword Catcher, page 554.

I love that we see her trying to get through to Conor and manipulate the situation in her favor by telling him that he is kind, and it directly contradicts what she tells Kel previously. This moment shows so much about who she is and how she interacts with the other nobles of the Hill. It is also clear that Antonetta is much more honest with Kel than others because he can see through her false persona.

i, unfortunately, do know what's up with that guy and it's that he's said something problematic about every faction of society at least once. for me i have some weird, reluctant fondness for him because he is just a train wreck and he's such a twat all the time that at least it's nondiscriminating, and i also like that when he sings about mental illness it's bc he's actually BEEN THERE and been publicly a mess bc of it and been addicted to drugs and acted like a dick, and he ACKNOWLEDGES THAT, but also at no point am i gonna jump on the 'he's an amazing person' parade bc generally he is just a sleazy idiot. it is weird watching people suddenly dragging up every single thing he's ever said to be like 'look! this is why he's bad for our tay tay!' when the running joke with matty healy is that he's just a prick. like u dont need to expose his moral fibre. u can just say he's a prick. and also as funny as the jokes are she's still a grown woman who's been around the block a few times when it comes to dating. i think she will be okay maybe

Are you in my head? @non-plutonian-druid and I were literally just talking about this today! In the situation in which Lila is with the displaced Hargreeves in HIT -

Lila and Number are fun. They don't have the history Lila and Five do, but she still blames him for it Because She Can. She calls him Baby Five, which he hates (she's not that much older (I hc Lila ~25/26, Number is 23)!) He's salty she gets to time travel. She brings up the question for him of What Do You Mean There's More Of Us and he brings up the question for her of Where Am I In This Timeline. They generally to get along - most people who like Five also like Number, and Number has the added bonus of that harassing him pisses Five off by proxy (which most people who like Five also can't resist). Lila is a neat look into how Five and Number's powers affect how they perceive the world because she knows what life is like without them - something Sarah is very curious about and Five and Number are almost aggressively obtuse about ("What do you mean, of course everyone is always aware of how fast the Earth is spinning all the time, that's just normal").

Like I said, they're fun. Number is Five without the baggage, so he's not as relatable to Lila as Five is with their shared Commission history, but they still have a good time together. I have little snips of dialogue between them in my head that I enjoy. Maybe one day I'll write a little HIT AU snip where Lila is around. I don't write enough of her, anyway, she's so fun.
