Considering his status, he’s interested in the arts. I think he’d find you at a library and comment on the book you’re reading or asking you questions about it. For the sake of this scenario, let’s say it happened a few times and one day you asked for his name. That’s how a friendship started. Stolas would be interested in the more modern writings and music. In exchange, he’d recommend you classics and even bring you his favorite pieces to discuss in private. The friendship would be very casual at first. At first he’d disappear out of sadness as his wife just ruined a nice friendship. But then he’d earn for you and start checking up on you with his magic. When he sees you worried about him and trying to reach him, he’d come talk to you (after drinking some liquor…) and would pour his heart out about how he missed you and all. You’re probably angry at him at that moment (rightfully so) but in the end he meant well. He wakes up in the morning and you two have a talk after he sobered up. You agreed to have a relationship and get to know each other’s more.

In the relationship: In the beginning, he sees only the physical side and is rather shy. His romantic and eccentric side will appear later but for soft vanilla dates you’ll have to prepare them first. He’s the type to send you lots of gifts and plan expensive dates. He’ll take you to concerts, let you access his library and bring you first prints of your favorite books. If you asked him to review your writing he’d be very happy too. I believe he’d give very good criticism. Also, if you want to meet one of your favorite author, if they’re in hell he will arrange it. He’s clingy and would be more afraid of being forgotten than you. He’d always try to make you happy and would always encourage you. Unfortunately, I don’t think he’d dare to warn you when you’re making a bad decision at first. Concerning hell, Stolas will obviously hope that you end up there (look. Sorry but he’s still selfish). When you’re human, he wouldn’t let you get close to that world. He might introduce you to his daughter at max. He’d also be very protective of you because you’re gonna face a lot of assassinations attempts and his masochist tendencies. If you want it to be serious, it’s gonna be rough because his world won’t be easy on you and he has a bad past with marriages. He sometimes acts more like a curious teenager than a prince. Also, he’d adore Hamilton and musicals in general. He’s caring but honesty isn’t the fort of anyone in hell. At least he means good so just be patient!

In a relationship: The only difference is his intensity. Rook is definitely more open with you when you’re his lover. Because he sees you as his one and only. addictions being treated as quirky or not a big deal for certain things is how I got balls deep addicted to adderall before I realized it was fucking destroying my body and I had to wrench myself out of it 🫠 I was stupid, young, naive, not experienced with heavier substances and I just internalized how casual everyone is about it. It’s so dangerous fr

adderall/prescription medication addiction also kinda goes hand in hand with a thing i omitted from my post to keep it relatively short which is certain addictions being sensationalized as a usually right-wing fearmongering tactic for the purpose of demonizing the source--i have friends with adhd who use prescription adderall to manage their symptoms who have found it harder in some cases to access refills due to its stock being limited to only certain locations as an attempt to combat adderall addiction out of a belief that the medication itself is bad, despite the fact that 1. most people who pop adderall like candy do not need it for medication and are not getting it through a prescription, they're getting it through a dealer and 2. you can be prescribed too much and need a lowered dosage. i'm not sure how you got hooked, so i won't jump to conclusions--but the fact remains is that the medication itself is not the issue, but the US in particular has consistently been fucking terrible about effectively tackling drug addiction so it really tracks that the throughline here is "medication bad" which makes it much harder for people with adhd to access it, and doesn't stop people who are addicted from accessing it elsewhere and continuing to be addicted. anything taken in excess is bad--it's just that adderall is the current hot button topic, and not for any good reason.

video games are in the same category where gaming addiction only exists in the public consciousness because of its association with "video games turn you into a violent mass shooter", which has and always will be a right wing facade alongside demonizing mental illness to ignore the issue of gun accessibility and the rise of fascism contributing to a culture of gun violence, but i digress. it's not that video game addiction is its own issue and that a lot of mobile-oriented and AAA companies employ practices that are intentionally designed to cultivate a dependent relationship between the player and the game that needs continued attention--it's that it's convenient to know is a thing because it suits a conservative agenda and because addictions like this aren't very well heavily talked about outside of these very narrow, unhelpful contexts, a lot of people both don't realize they're addicted and can't get help, and don't even know that you can be addicted to anything that isn't a hard substance.

this might have been a bit of an aside from the point of your ask anon, i definitely went on a huge tangent, so i will add to loop back around that for addictions being treated casually it was part of the reason i never realized i had a caffeine addiction until my first sudden, unprompted panic attack and subsequent discovery that dependency can cause literally every single symptom i would go on to experience and more. there's a very casual, nonchalant attitude about coffee in our culture and having actually experienced the worst of it and continuing to see so many people around me (immediate family included) who are completely unaware they're addicted and don't link their health issues to their overconsumption, i get more than a little upset about the idea of being a "coffee fiend" or needing coffee just to maintain basic alertness being portrayed as a quirky character trait rather than an actually fucking horrifying sign that your health is in jeopardy and you won't ever know because NOBODY talks about it.

the deplorable conditions of the trench, they’re enough to break anyone - but the ONLY reason why neither Alfie or Sgt. have broken is bc of the other. wanting to be together, to die together, to either see the end of the war or to see the end of their lives TOGETHER, is the only thing that has stopped them from breaking - bc they’re in a shit position! they’ve seen the horrors - shell shocked children in army uniforms, starvation, disease, having to rob the dead. they’ve seen what happens in the trenches, but they STILL keep fighting to be together bc they NEED to be together - they NEED to see the end of either themselves or the war, together. they’re both in a really shit position tbh, like, they both know that they’re dead men walking bc that’s just the nature of the first world war and the soldiers on the frontlines - they are dead men walking. so their choices are either die together, or live together knowing what the fuck they have been through. and living, unfortunately, isn’t up to them - just popping their head over the trench slightly could get them shot with a sniper’s bullet through the skull. just walking through the trenches could get them both torn to pieces by a grenade, or a shell. their choices are shit, and their position is shit. MISSUS SOLOMONS <3 <3 everyone’s beloved!! she’s worried sick about her boys, worried if they’ll actually make it home or not, and with all the horror stories she’s hearing, she’s slowly getting less and less hopeful, especially bc Alfie stopped writing (too busy trying to keep everyone alive). there’s a lot of stuff that’s unsaid - Alfie and the reader have been through a fucking LOT together, and even Alfie didn’t make it out 100% the same as he did going in. but the reader knows him probably better than anyone else, he knows what Alfie’s thinking, what he’s feeling, just be quickly looking at him. he knows when he’s upset, happy, anxious. it’s in the eyes, the eyes never lie. but he’s more than willing to step up and to look after Alfie, bc Alfie does it for him in return. it’s symbiotic, almost - he helps Alfie, Alfie helps him, and they can’t be without the other bc no one gets the other the way they do. they’ve been through a LOT together, they know each other as well as themselves, and really, no one could ever have that level of emotional and mental intimacy that they do - they’ve been to war together both literally and figuratively. more than anyone, Alfie understands what it’s like to have blood on his hands; he knows what it’s like to kill and to live with the guilt of not being able to save people. he knows what it’s like to feel ashamed, shunned, guilty and embarrassed for living through the wars when others couldn’t. he knows. but he also wouldn’t force the reader to speak if he didn’t want to - he knows shellshock is a complicated thing, and he’s trying his best to find his footing in terms of helping his bf get through it. he’s trying, genuinely. Alfie loves that guy, and there’s no doubt about it, but they’re so protective of each other that… maybe it’ll turn out to be a bit of an issue sooner or later.
