The whole Harriet Smith & Robert Martin debacle was not only Emma's doing:
a note was brought from Mrs. Goddard, requesting, in most respectful terms, to be allowed to bring Miss Smith with her
Harriet has a guardian in Mrs. Goddard, who must be aware of the association with the Martins. Harriet just stayed with them for 2 months and talks about them all the time. The Martins are welcoming Harriet into their family, with "her" cow, and height notches on the wall, and hints of Robert marrying.
So why then, does Mrs. Goddard introduce Harriet at Hartfield? Why not just keep keeping on and encourage the intimacy with the Martins? I feel like Mrs. Goddard was hoping that Emma would better Harriet's prospects. Or Mrs. Goddard is sacrificing Harriet's happiness to stay in the good graces of one of the most powerful families in the area?
Is Harriet a pawn in more than one game?

A Serial Killer’s Guide to Men and Manslaughter--SCRIPT (pgs.
[pgs 1-2; 3-7; 7-14; 14-23; 24-30; 30-44]
EXT. PLEASANT VALLEY PD - NIGHT
It is pouring rain outside. David and Achilles stand under an awning from the police station looking at the flooding parking lot.
DAVID        (to Achilles)    If it's just a little rain, we'll be fine.
Thunder sounds in the distance.
DAVID (CONT'D)    This is fine, we'll be fine.
Achilles whines.
INT./EXT. DAVID'S CAR/PLEASANT VALLEY - NIGHT (TRAVELING)
David is the only driver on the valley pass. His driving is scored by the sound of heavy rain and thunder.
The windshield wipers are at the highest setting and the defroster on the car barely works, so David has to wipe at the foggy windshield.
DAVID        (like a jingle or mantra)    This is fine, we'll be fine, this is fine, we'll be fine...
David passes a forest service road sign but continues on.
Suddenly, David encounters a landslide that has spilled onto the highway. David immediately slams on the breaks and throws an arm out to keep Achilles in his seat.
David puts on a coat from the backseat and gets out of the car to inspect the road.
The debris is thick and still flowing. David checks his phone but there is no cell service.
Resigned, David gets back in the car and backtracks to the forest service road.
Tumblr media
INT./EXT. DAVID'S CAR/FOREST (TRAVELING)
David switches over to 4-wheel drive and continues through the forest. He turns on the radio for weather coverage, but the signal goes in and out.
DAVID    This is fine, we're going to be fine.
Then the car gets stuck in the mud. David reverses, but the tires simply spin out.
David gets out again to inspect the situation with a flashlight, but doesn't like what he sees.
David returns to the car and shuts it off. He pulls out a map of the area and finds the route he has taken so far.
DAVID    It looks like we're only half a mile from Pleasant Grove. We should just try to hoof it into town.
David gets back out with Achilles, the flashlight, the map, and his phone. He pins their location and switches over to a compass app.
After a few paces, David notices a residential fence.
DAVID    See? We've already hit civilization.
Navigating the perimeter, David and Achilles make their way to onto a gravel driveway.
Tumblr media
EXT. HOUSE IN THE FOREST - NIGHT
The house is upscale and has a 20s-style craftsman design and has a light on in the front porch entryway.
David folds up the map and puts the flashlight away as he approaches the door. Both he and Achilles shake the rain water off like twins. Their safety is short-lived.
Just before he can ring the doorbell, David is knocked out.
Tumblr media
MONTAGE: DREAMSCAPE #3
INT. BUTCHERY COLD ROOM
David hears something squick and sloosh.
He wakes on a metal preparation table. He notices meat hanging all around him, uncarved and pretreated.
There is movement above David's line of sight. It is Thomas, and he is carving into David's chest.
David is paralyzed as Thomas lifts out David's still-beating heart. Thomas observes it like it is a work of art and presses a kiss to it.
When he comes away, his lips are bloody and he smiles lovingly in David's direction. Like all the dreams before, Thomas seals this one with a flirtatious wink.
                                                                                             END OF MONTAGE:
INT. THOMAS' HOUSE - LIBRARY - LATER
David wakes looking at a ceiling fan. The light is dim and flickers. David spots Achilles curled up, dry, and sleeping in front of a fireplace.
There is an elaborate bookshelf containing a wide selection of books, but David immediately recognizes a set of his own works on the shelf.
David lays stretched out on a bath towel atop a dark upholstered couch.
His coat and shoes are gone. His map, flashlight, and cell phone sit on a coffee table in front of him. The coffee table also has a glass of water and a plate with painkillers.
Tumblr media
David sits up and disregards both of these offerings, but pockets his cell phone. His ears ring and he wobbles from the pain and disorientation.
David goes to the bookshelf to inspect a collection of photographs on the wall. The photos document:
-Thomas as a child at boarding school    -Thomas receiving degrees in culinary arts and business communication    -Thomas in front of his shop shaking hands with a city official
David surveys the rest of the room. He creeps towards the only door and opens it to listen for activity.
The lights are on in the hallway, but there is no one to be found.
Looking back at Achilles, David hesitates, but exits the room.
INT. THOMAS' HOUSE - HALLWAY (TRACKING)
David enters a hallway that leads to a foyer. David notices his coat and shoes in a mudroom at the front door.
David has a straight shot to escape, but he pauses again to listen for activity.
There are sounds coming from a kitchen on the opposite side of the house.
David measures each step as he makes his way to the front door. He keeps a hand softly tracing the wall for balance.
After a few paces, he feels an odd dip in the wall. Focusing on the discrepancy, David looks back and forth between his freedom at the front door and his curiosity over the wall.
The curiosity wins out and he pushes into the wall, which opens into a secret room.
Tumblr media
INT. KILL ROOM
David enters the gym-like space. The lights are motion activated, so David shuts the hallway door behind him.
David surveys the room and walks closer to the racks of mixed weapons on the farthest wall. Intrigued, he reaches out to pick one up, but stops himself.
Then he spots the series of hatch marks written in permanent marker on the mirror. He quickly tallies them.
               DAVID    ...Forty-five, fifty, fifty-three... Shit.
David takes out his phone and snaps pictures of the weapons and a close-up of the hatch marks.
David quickly exits the way he came.
INT. THOMAS' HOUSE - LIBRARY - LATER
David enters and hastily advances towards Achilles, who is still asleep in front of the fire.
David prods Achilles awake but pauses, weighing his options.
DAVID        (to Achilles)    Let's do the fandango, bud. For real.
David leaves Achilles at the fire and stands determinedly at the bookshelf, facing away from the door.
David hears footsteps approach, but doesn't react.
THOMAS (O.S.)    See something you like?
DAVID    What would you do if I said yes?
David turns around to find Thomas dressed casually in a sweater and lounge pants holding a tray with tea and food.
THOMAS    I would be terribly pleased with myself. Which would lead to an unwarranted boost to my ego.
Thomas steps closer to David but changes direction to set the tray down on the coffee table.
Thomas observes the unused water and painkillers then takes a seat in an armchair next to the fire. His face is lit halfway in the dark and light.
THOMAS (CONT'D)    There is a time and place for self-love -- for what the French call amour propre -- but I find that it often gets in the way of what I truly want.                DAVID    It sounds as though you've been talking with Aunt Harriet too much.
THOMAS    That may be, but it's only because she is a woman of singular tastes and I can thoroughly appreciate that in a conversation partner. What is it that you look for, David? In a conversation partner, I mean.
DAVID    I look for what everyone looks for: a pair of ears and a pair of eyes. It's as simple as that.        (gesturing to Achilles)    Lucky for me, I take my conversation partner everywhere I go.
THOMAS    That must make for many one-sided conversations, if that is the case. Perhaps I am not the only one suffering from a prolonged bout of amour propre.                DAVID    If you are to believe Aunt Harriet, then yes.
THOMAS    And if I want to believe you?
               DAVID    ...also yes.
THOMAS    Good. That puts us on equal footing. Which is something else that I seek in a partner. For conversations.
DAVID    Likewise. Speaking of equal footing, are we going to address the elephant in the room?
               THOMAS    Which one?
DAVID    How about the one where I blacked out and woke up in your living room.
THOMAS    Library. The living room is upstairs.
DAVID    I probably would've known that had I entered your home with my full faculties like a normal house guest.
Achilles lifts up drowsily at David's raised tone, but turns over on his back to sleep in a different position.
THOMAS    How's your head? You really should take the ibuprofen.
               DAVID    My head is fine.
Thomas leans forward and uncovers the plates of food.
THOMAS    I also prepared some oatmeal. I didn't know how you prefer to take it, so it has all the fixings.
DAVID    I take it how I like my conversation partners: plain and straightforward.
THOMAS    Interesting. I prefer the finer arts of wit and wordplay. I assumed you would feel the same...?
DAVID    I do, when the situation arises.
               THOMAS    And has it? Arisen?
DAVID    That has yet to be determined.
THOMAS    Fair enough. You really should eat something though. I promise, nothing in this spread will render you unconscious. Again.
David slowly paces back to the couch, careful to not show his instability from the head injury.
DAVID    So is there a straightforward reason for why I had to be rendered unconscious at all?
THOMAS    I admit that I am a bit of a security enthusiast. I was alerted immediately when you stepped on my property, but I thought you were someone else.
DAVID    Someone else with a dog that deserved to get knocked out at your front door?
THOMAS    Sadly, the whole situation will only become more absurd if I try to explain every detail to you at the present time. Suffice it to say, I've always been honest with you. Just not as straightforward as I could be.
DAVID    You do realize that raises more questions than answers.
THOMAS    Of course. But I find that a healthy dose of mystery keeps a conversation stimulating.
DAVID    If you can't tell me why you knocked me out, can you at least tell me how I got here?
               THOMAS    How do you think?
DAVID    I don't know, I'm imagining myself as swooning and being carried like a damsel in distress.
THOMAS    That would be an accurate description. You don't weigh all that much. Which is probably due to the fact that you refuse to eat.
In response, David reaches for a spoonful of oatmeal, but instead picks up a cup of tea. He doesn't drink it.
Thomas acknowledges this by picking up a cup of tea as well.
Together, they both sip simultaneously with locked eyes.
               DAVID    Loose leaf?
THOMAS    Of course. If you hadn't already guessed, I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to my palate. And appetites.
DAVID    Do you know why I'm here?
THOMAS    I would hope that it is to find a stimulating conversation partner. But I know that that is not the case.
DAVID    I just came from Pleasant Valley. I was at the police department all day. Researching their cold cases and missing persons reports.
THOMAS    I assume you took that man from the town hall the other night at his word.
               DAVID    I did.
THOMAS    And? What did you uncover?
               DAVID    A common denominator.
THOMAS    Is that the amateur detective or the novelist speaking?
DAVID    Does it matter? I still found an answer.
THOMAS    And was the answer what you needed to hear or what you wanted to hear?
               DAVID    Does it matter?
               THOMAS    To me? Yes. Greatly.
DAVID    The answer led me back to you, if that's what you're asking.
THOMAS    Why would you tell me this if you found out such an answer?
DAVID    I'm being plain and straightforward. I'm also curious to see what you do next with this information.
A car honks outside.
THOMAS    Ah, that would be the cab I called when I heard you stumbling around in the hallway earlier. I think it would be best if you got home safe and sound, especially since you don't have a car for the time being.
Tumblr media
INT. THOMAS' HOUSE - ENTRYWAY
David steps into his shoes next to Achilles at the front door. David straightens as Thomas enters the mud room.
He gets close in David's personal space and David stops breathing. But it is simply for Thomas to grab David's coat hanging up behind them.
Thomas holds it out for David to put on easily. David does, maintaining eye contact as long as possible.
EXT/INT. HOUSE IN THE FOREST/CAB - DAY
It is no longer raining, but the ground is wet.
Thomas holds the door open for David and Achilles as they enter the backseat of a classic yellow cab.
Thomas shuts the door and knocks on the passenger-side window. The CABBIE, middle-aged and friendly looking, rolls it down to talk.
CABBIE    Heya, Mr. Wright. Whereabouts are these two fellas headin'?
THOMAS    Harriet Truelove's place. At the end of the main drag.
Thomas passes a wad of cash through the window.
CABBIE    Easy-peasy. Pleasure doing business with you.
Thomas locks eyes once again with David.
THOMAS    Likewise. And you should expect a token of my appreciation by the end of the day.
The Cabbie drives away and David watches Thomas as they do.

Prologue
Start Here
Left Here on June 1, 2014
I was about fourteen the first time I read someone else’s diary. I remember that she left me alone in her room to sneak us snacks, since I wasn’t even supposed to be in her room courtesy of her parent’s “no boys upstairs” rule. I sat on her bed attempting to memorize biology facts that just weren’t sticking in my brain. My eyes drifted away from the paper in my hands to the light pink walls, covered with posters of boy bands that I never listened to. I looked at her dresser with opened drawers that had clothes spilling onto the floor.
For some reason, this room looked nothing like how she appeared at school. She always seemed perfect, like she had a makeup and fashion team help her get ready every morning. The neatest part of her room was her nightstand. It had lotion lined up against the back, a simple lamp, a half drank water bottle, and a tube of chapstick. The mahogany table shined without even the slightest trace of dust. The only thing on her nightstand that was out of place and made the nightstand lose the look that it belonged in a magazine was a simple green file folder that looked as if it had been taken to school everyday by an elementary aged child because the corners had begun to roll up, random stains splattered across its’ surface, and random numbers cluttered the bottom of it. Her first name was written in permanent marker with the large, loopy handwriting she often used to write me notes at school. If I hadn’t been bored, I would have assumed that if was full of schoolwork, but I was bored and anything besides biology sounded like a good idea at the time. Plus, I wanted to see if she’d kept her schoolwork where we’d scribbled notes to each other in the margins. Besides my own diary, that was the place where I was most open about my feelings.
When I lifted the edge of the folder, I didn’t find schoolwork though. I found tons of loose-leaf notebook paper all of which had been written on by her. I guess tons is an exaggeration, but there was enough. Enough for me to notice that there were dates, entry numbers, and that this wasn’t schoolwork at all; it was her diary. I used to think that I was the only weirdo in the world who kept a diary, but finding hers was only the beginning to my discoveries. My heart raced as I flipped back to the beginning. I started to read, anxious for my name to appear on the cluttered pages. Her words were sometimes accompanied by doodles in the margins or numbers that I could only guess were used in math class as her spare sheet of paper, but for the most part, these pages contained her raw emotions.
I read things I never would have known otherwise. It was like I’d unlocked a part of her. My name or the nickname she generally called me by appeared, but I didn’t get to read much more because the crinkling of a bag told me that she was coming back. I slammed the folder back, tilting it a few times, trying to determine exactly how it had been placed. I began to panic because I couldn’t recall exactly how it had been before I touched it. I swallowed and took a deep breath, sitting back on her bed.
A moment later, she opened the door, kicking it wider open with her feet because she had so much in her hands. I got up, causing her bed to squeak, and took a few things from her. She walked directly to the side of her nightstand where her diary was. I knew my face had to be burning red, but she wasn’t looking at me. She shoved her diary over to make room for two sodas she held. She placed them down with a thud, and I felt myself breathe again. She hadn’t noticed. She asked me a question concerning homework and that was that.
From that moment on, whenever I was alone and saw her diary, I would open it, noting the exact position it had been in to avoid the panic attack from that first time. I would read excited for new entries and my name to appear. I’d tell myself that I wouldn’t care if she read my diary, which somehow justified reading hers without making me feel like a bad person. There was just something about reading someone else’s diary that was intriguing to me. It’s not really hard to understand my fascination. Reading someone else’s diary is like being able to read someone else’s thoughts at a particular moment in their lives. If you’ve never read someone’s diary then you probably don’t understand what I’m talking about, but maybe I can help you with that.
So you’re probably wondering what all this has to do with this crate you found. Well, to begin with we must thank you for visiting. Where you are standing right now is a few steps away from our road: Whitworth Drive. When we left this crate here, the road was still deserted. This spot had been in the woods, but you could still see the black asphalt road from it. We left this crate under this exact tree because this is the tree where we’d thrown the rocks from. The tree we all often referred to as Sophie’s Tree, since with observation you could see where she’s written that in permanent marker on the trunk of this small oak tree. Maybe now the road leads to houses, but when we left this here that wasn’t the case. Instead, the road had been blocked off with a pathetic wooden road block marked with blue and red reflectors and a faded road closed sign. Trees and plants had even begun to reclaim their land the last time we were here.
By the time you’re reading this, I probably won’t know the conditions of the road anymore. Hell, I might not even be alive anymore. Come to think of it, all of us might be dead, but that is not the point. We didn’t leave this here so you would go looking for us to tell us that someone found our crate, whether you found it useful or not. True, it would be wicked awesome if someone found the contents of this crate helpful, but we do not need you letting us know that. If at least one of us could help you, then that would be enough for us.
Now I bet you’re wondering what all this crate contains. It’s obviously a bunch of paper, but on these sheets of paper are our stories. The start of our diaries up thru December 2010, right before the giant ice storm that trapped people from McDonough, Georgia in their houses for at least a week and had all of us stuck staying in between four houses because of a party that should have been supervised by someone’s parents. That was the first time that we found ourselves altogether. It was also the first time that we realized we all had started to write our stories down in a sort of diary form. It became a game to us. That game included making select people read their diaries aloud to everyone. We deemed it the “Notebook Game,” and even though mostly everyone hated sharing our own diary, we kept coming back because we wanted to hear everyone else’s story.
We learned things about our friends that we never would have known otherwise, which was helpful at times. But the thing that really helped me through was the words of the people that I didn’t know well. There was something therapeutic about hearing someone else’s struggles that were similar to your own even if all you really knew was their name. It helped us see that we weren’t outcasts. We weren’t the only ones bad things happened to, but we also weren’t the only ones good things happened to either. Because of these Notebook Games, we became connected in a way I don’t think I’ll ever be able to understand or explain, and while we weren’t all the best of friends, we became so close that we’d jokingly call all 334 of us a “cult.”
People became known by their words. Cara and Amanda were the best friends that who sorted everyone into categories. Cara was also the person who thought she knew the perfect steps for girls to follow to get with the boy they liked, which we learned from the “Cute-Love Survival Guide” that she included in her diary. Trick was the weird boy who spent the bulk of his time in a local graveyard, but we learned that a death in his family caused him to be that way. He didn’t want the place where his loss rested to be untamed. Syrena was the quiet girl who hated talking with a passion, but loved words. Corey was the boy who made mixed CDs from music that we created. He’d put our songs on CDs to be played at parties in exchange for knowing who or what our songs were about. He made it clear that if he gave you a mixed CD, a song on it was about you. Harriet was the tiny girl who was fascinated by others’ stories. She spent most of her time watching others and recording what she found out about them. We called her a “stalker” a lot because of this. And me, well I am going to choose to remain anonymous. My diary is included in this and if you can figure out who I am, well more power to you, but I don’t really think it’s important. I can promise you that I’m not the most important person in this group.
The most important person out of the 334 of us would be the nice girl. Not the girl I started this about even though I love her. She is nice to me, but not to everyone. The nice girl was a friend to all. She had a way to make you feel loved with a simple conversation. She was the type that you automatically liked upon meeting. I’m sure some people called her fake, but I could never see that. She was the most genuine, good person I have ever met, and she was the first one out of us to die.
But before that tragic day, she ran an idea by us. We rarely hung out in a way where everyone’s attention was on one person when they weren’t reading their diary aloud. But on this day, she gathered all of our attention. She wasn’t even nervous even though she had 333 eyes on her. She had led us all to the end of Whitworth Drive, to the cul-de-sac late on a clear evening in April. She explained how much our notebook games had helped her, and how she believed that these games helped everyone here. We agreed in jumbled murmurs, which lead her to continue with her idea. She told us that our notebooks had the potential to help others. Everyone got quiet. The only sound was an owl hooting in the distance. I had a gut-sinking feeling that she was going to suggest that we post our diaries online for all to see. Instead, she explained the scavenger hunt idea she’d cooked up. We’d pick a few places that were important to us as a group, split our diaries up according to dates, and leave them there with instructions to the next location and an explanation as to what it was. When she finished speaking, she got mixed reviews. Some people weren’t keen on having their diaries left for anyone to read, so we tabled the conversation. I honestly thought that we’d never mention it again.
Until she died. We all attended her funeral, which made it feel like a celebrity had died, and I guess in some ways, one had. When we were outside, after her ceremony, her friend called the remaining 333 of us to the side.
“We have to do it.” He said. He didn’t elaborate. He didn’t have to. We all understood and no one disagreed this time because it was her idea, and it was the last thing we could do for her.
Which leads you to this. It’s a lot. We know, but we want you to find it useful. We want to help. We know how stressful and lonely life can be at times, and we want to be there for you even if no one else can at the moment. So go ahead, read the first part of our diaries and take away what you want from them. We tried to put them in an order with variety, but you by no means have to read them in that order. We did include breaks because we know how easy it is to become consumed in someone else’s life. You can skip around or not read them all or pretend you never stumbled across this, the choice is completely yours. Just remember while you’re reading that it’s okay if you don’t remember everyone upon completion. That is not why we did this. Besides this literally being our diaries and us sharing our most personal thoughts, it isn’t really about us. It’s about you. It’s about what you take away from all of this. It’s supposed to mirror real life. You’re not going to remember everyone you meet, who has any sort of impact on you, and we don’t expect you to remember all of us either. It’s okay. We just ask one thing from you, please don’t remove any of the pages from this crate. You can read them at your leisure, but please keep them here. They belong to the road: Whitworth Drive. Happy reading and remember to take care of yourself.

I was so happy for winners like The Americans (highlight of the evening!!!), Regina King, Lady Gaga, Mahershala Ali, Patricia Clarkson, Darren Criss, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek, Olivia Colman and Green Book.  The Cecil B. DeMille award went to Jeff Bridges. The new Carol Burnett award started off with Carol herself. I was saddened that Bill Hader, Henry Winkler, Kieran Culkin, Keri Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen went home empty handed. The Fiji water girl got most of the press and gave much free advertising to her product.  Some of the stars did not like her getting in their shots to push a product without their knowledge, both a clever and sad state of affairs.
***** The Kominsky Method will be back for season 2.
***** The Sag awards had their big night and gave the lifetime achievement to Alan Alda. Winners included Emily Blunt, Darren Criss, Black Panther, Rami Malek and Glenn Close. I was especially thrilled with some love goingto Jason Bateman and Patricia Arquette. Best dressed were Amy Adams, Yara Shahidi, Brian Tyree Henry, Sydelle Noel, Eddie Griffin, Holly Taylor, Sofia Hubitz, Emma Stone, Emily Blunt, Darren Criss, Laverne Cox, Timothee Chalamet, Robin Wright, Lily Tomlin, Chadwick Boseman, Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell, and Catherine Zeta Jones. The WTF award goes to Alison Brie.
***** The Oscar race is on. Best picture could go to Blank Panther, Blackkklansman, Roma, The Favourite, Green Book, Vice, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is born. Black Panther also got some love for music and costume design.  Fingers crossed for Isle of Dogs in the animated category. Actor nods had a few surprises. Willem Dafoe and Rami Malek , Lady Gaga and Melissa McCarthy are up for leads and supporting mentions are for Mahershala Ali, Regina King, Adam Driver and Sam Elliott. I am so hopeful for Spike Lee and I want to hear that speech.
***** If you haven’t seen Trigger Warning with Killer Mike, you gotta check it out. He and Sarah Silverman should go on a tour of teaching acceptance for their fellow man.
***** So.. Fox news said that Ruth Bader Ginsberg was dead??
***** In sexual harassment news: Harvey Weinstein is hiring new lawyers.** Les Moonves is seeking arbitration with CBS.

*****  NY mayor Bill De Blasio has given healthcare to every resident of NY city.
***** 25% of Russians do not have indoor toilets. Putin and his buddies have about $1trillion tucked away from London to Miami.
***** Days alert: I wonder if Leo’s real name ‘Matthew Cooper’ is a nod to out actor Chad Allen from Dr. Quinn??!! It is also fun to see Judith Chapman take on the role of Leo’s Mama, Diana. The pair played Mother and son previously on The Young and the Restless. Is she really Diana Colville from John’s past??** So Stefan has been played by Tyler Christopher who asked for some time off and a sub was put in place who will take over in March. Since Christopher left, he has since decided that he will leave permanently so things are up in the air. Will Stefan and Gabi hook up? Days has been renewed for season 55. HOORAY!!!! Ratings are up 4%. **Loved the line when Chloe told Rex he should wear a cup. **Leo and Xander’s playful “lust” was so sassy!!
***** Happy Valentine’s Day!
***** Steve Buscemi will play God on tv’s Miracle Workers.
***** So, the new Conan format has ups and downs. I miss the band and the desk but I am Loving the fade in and fade out at commercials. I have always hated the, “We’ll be right back “ nonsense. I was sad to lose a half hour at first but Conan and Andy do seem refreshed.
***** Still waiting for the release of Apple Seed which is written, directed and starring Michael Worth. It is one of the final films of Rance Howard who stars with his son, Clint, Adrienne Barbeau and the other Father and son team of Robby and Zephyr Benson.
***** The January Bob Segar concert in Illinois at the Peoria Civic Center is the top selling concert ever at this venue. Old rock acts take note.
***** Bob Costas is out at NBC after 40 years.
***** Trial and Error has been cancelled. BOO!!!

***** Despite some people I admire that are giving Alexandria Ocasio Cortez a talking to like she’s a child, I say ‘Give ‘em Hell!’  She could well be President so fight girl!!
***** Word is that Karen Pence is now teaching at the Immanuel School in Virginia. The school refuses admission to students who participate in or condone homosexual activity. The application for the school states that misconduct includes heterosexual activity outside of marriage, homosexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity and use of pornographic websites. The application goes on to state that ‘a wife must submit to her husband’ and a pledge must be signed to that effect.
***** There is controversy over the bill to give people a day off for Election Day. Many people will still have to work, the country never completely shuts down. How many fucking times do I have to say it: VOTE BY MAIL!!!!!!!!!!!
***** So, Scary clown told us Mexico would pay for ‘the wall’. During the campaign he gave actual ideas for that like Mexico giving us a one time payout or else he would not allow Mexican immigrants to western union money back to Mexico. Another idea was that there would be a great ta on that Western union money. It does not seem like they tried any of that and just decided we would pay for the stupid ‘wall.’ How about the money he makes off Trump merch which his website and hotels still sell to pay for it?? How about the $35 million that Trump sold in real estate in 2018? The ‘Wall’ go fund me did not reach its $1billion goal so the $20 million they did collect is being offered for refunds. Some of those people still want that money to go for its purpose so Trump is creating a non- profit. Can’t we use that money to help the border patrol agents and get the backlog in immigration court moving?? That we are still talking about this ridiculous wall and that it had a go fund me page is enough to boggle the normal brain.** I think Kimmel said it best when he suggested that Trump just tell the red hats that the wall has been built.  They believe everything he says so why wouldn’t they believe that??  It would save the country a lot of headaches. ** What the Hell is with his new “wheels and walls” mantra??** Russia caused Brexit too? Putin is a menace.** Another sink hole appeared the White House. WTF?
***** The congressional budget office says the shut down cost the U.S. 11 billion
***** Trump is talking to Herman Cain about a job on the Federal Reserve Board.
***** The GOP is selling fake bricks that cost about 50 cents for $20 each to send to Senate Dems. Some have said that the Dems should sign them and sell them and give the money to government workers. ** Why are Russian jets fucking around on the North American coastline??
***** Roger Stone has been indicted on 5 counts of false statements, 1 count of obstruction and 1 count of witness tampering. The FBI officers who arrested him were part of the shut down and they still did their job!!  He publically and privately claimed to have communicated with Russia. Predictions are that many more indictments are coming down the pike that involve many familiar faces.** Roger Stone has a Nixon tattoo on his back. I feel sorry for his cell mate.-Bill Maher
***** Bill Maher got some flak for comments after Stan Lee died. He wasn’t slamming Lee, but wondered about comic book fans putting away childish things. I suppose that could include weed but point taken.
***** Jared Kushner along with 30 other White House staff was denied top secret clearance but Trump advisor Carl Kline overruled that decision and gave it to them anyway. This has never been done before, this is a job for intelligent agencies.
***** Empire star Jussie Smollett was attacked in Chicago in what cops are saying was a possible hate crime. The attackers were yelling that this was MAGA country, poured bleach on him and put a rope around his neck.  The actor was previously sent a letter full of homophobic and racist slurs which he FBI had been looking into.
***** Ellen page gave us some memorable, powerful words to chew on with her appearance on Stephen Colbert. I am sure she gave courage to many who suffer because of our hate filled administration.
***** Gwyneth Paltrow is being sued from a 2016 ski incident for 3 mil.
***** I gain more and more respect for Seth Meyers. I did not really understand the choice of him as host in the beginning. His notice of local stations, choice of guests and revolving drummers makes for a great show.
***** A Dutch company may have invented a small device that converts heat into cold and Forbes is saying, ‘it could save the planet.’
***** So looking forward to Ryan Murphy’s The Politician which will star Jessica Lange, Gwyneth Paltrow and January Jones.
***** I know that is has happened little by little and we go thru times in our history when things get worse and then things get better but… When did this country get so fucking corrupt?? I mean seriously.. Why is Brendan Dassey still in prison and why is there no real justice for Teresa Halbach? ** Why is Trump still in the White House?**Why are government workers being told to work for nothing?? Why is R Kelly still living it up?? Why are some states going backward in time when it comes to women’s health?? Why do many corporations care more about their own pockets than the children of their employees or the environment around them??** Why does our justice system so often punish big for small infractions and allow the powerful to do anything they want?? **Why is a wall a better idea than infrastructure or warm beds for the homeless or food for our children and why are so many children in cages??
***** How can it be that we are still in a world where people are not allowed to reach their full potential?? Why do so many selfish humans actually fight to live in a world where they actively hold others back? Shouldn’t we all be concerned about the greater good?  We should all be allowed to see a Doctor when we are ill. We should all be able to excel in education if we choose .We should all be able to get a job to fit our skills and work ethic.  Opportunities and the pursuit of happiness should be available to all. Why is this so fucking hard for so many to grasp in this world? Imagine!
***** Sundance premiered the new flick, Big time adolescence with Griffin Gluck and Pete Davidson. Pete has since made no bones about filming in Syracuse. He hated it.
***** Jeff Flake will join CBS news as a contributor.
***** Tom Brokaw is in a bit of trouble for saying Hispanics should work harder at assimilation.
***** The Tom Hanks/ Matthew Rhys film, A beautiful day in the neighborhood has pushed back its release date to Nov. 22.

Post Ep Ponderings Weekly Round-Up August 6-10
I knew that donor heart wouldn’t work out somehow. I still think they’re somehow going to make it so that she gets Margarita/Grace’s heart when she’s born. How many months off is that now anyway? I keep thinking that a new born baby heart would be too small, but I think I heard something once that you’re heart size doesn’t change? Any medical people out there know anything about this?
I wonder why Matty is pushing so hard for Vic to start dating again. I’m torn between the show getting them together and him living vicariously through her if she does start dating because he’s still worried about it himself. Speaking of Vic, what are the laws like in the U.K. if she wants to get divorced? Is this an annulment kind of situation? I mean, what if Adam really does never come back. I’m sure she’ll want to get married again someday. P.S. David and Vic together would be super weird. That whole weird set up thing did not work for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed Megan embarrassing herself on the motorcycle for Frank, only to have him go off on a date. Rishi helping her out was pretty fun too. Not only was it just a funny scene, but I don’t like Megan and watching her lose was entertaining to me.
So I’m guessing we’re going to be finding out more about Beth. I think the most interesting part of her this week was actually more about Harriet. Usually Harriet is really quick and on top of things. They always seem to attribute it to her being an ex-cop, but she seemed strangely obtuse when Beth was trying to say without saying that her aunt is abusive. My guess is that Beth will end up living in the village permanently in the next few months, once they figure out how to get over it breaking her bail conditions. Also, I think Amelia might just be a little bit in love with Beth.
I really like how they’re dealing with Grace, Paddy and Chas. In opposition to how having David and Vic interact was weird and off-putting to me, I actually quite enjoyed Laurel and Chas’s little talk. That scene worked really well for me.
How awesome were the kids this week? Joking around, teasing each other about being scared and going ghostbusting! I didn’t live in a small village or have woods nearby, but that completely reminded me of some of the best times of my childhood. I only wish they could’ve actually saved Bex (side note: I saw that Lachlan spelled it Becs, but I don’t care, my spelling is better!). How awesome would it have been if a group of 8 year olds had saved her?
And finally, the big story of the week, Lachlan and Bex. When it first seemed like Lachlan had killed her, it made sense to me, for the most part. As you may remember, I was actually happy to have her live. Now I’m a little confused. What was the purpose of randomly keeping her alive for an extra couple of weeks if he was just going to kill her anyway? Last time I was sure she was dead and I was wrong. Now I’m not convinced she’s dead so she probably is. Was it just so Lachlan could try and cover his tracks by having her record that message? I mean, I did like the drama, loved her smashing him in the head with the frying pan, so I guess it wasn’t a complete loss, but damnit, I hope I’m not wrong and she is alive somewhere. She’s not listed as a departing character (yet) so I can hope and seriously, wasn’t Ross buried in a shallow grave once? I’m guessing we won’t know for a bit, what the actual outcome was because I’m sure at some point someone is going to find that message she carved on the wall in the cabin. My hope is after that is discovered that we’ll suddenly find out that Lachlan has her stashed in a mad house or something. One thing I do know is that Lachlan isn’t really thinking far enough ahead with his lies to cover his tracks. He really needs to figure something out because literally no one believes that she would just leave Seb behind.

Chill out about China – POLITICO
Editor’s Note: This edition of Morning Money is published weekdays at 8 a.m. POLITICO Pro Financial Services subscribers hold exclusive early access to the newsletter each morning at 5:15 a.m. To learn more about POLITICO Pro’s comprehensive policy intelligence coverage, policy tools and services, click here.
Chill out on China — News that President Trump will likely not meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping before a March 1 deadline to strike a trade deal helped spook markets on Thursday with the Dow off over 200 points, or close to 1 percent. Administration officials have spoken repeatedly of ratcheting up tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports from 10 percent to 25 percent if no deal is made by then.
Story Continued Below
But the delay in the Trump-Xi meeting does not necessarily mean the higher tariffs will go into effect. Trump has said he won’t do a final deal until he sits down with Xi. And his inability to do so now is more a matter of the calendar and the upcoming North Korea summit.
Phones exist — Trump could still choose to extend the deadline, though the hawks won’t like it. All Trump has to do is pick up the phone and talk to Xi, which we are told by a top source could absolutely happen between now and March 1.
Moving the Overton window — The “Green New Deal” resolution from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) is another blue sky proposal — in this case to completely shift to renewable energy by 2030 — that isn’t headed anywhere near passage soon. But just like the 70 percent marginal rate and the wealth tax, it’s a major shift in the acceptable policy ground Democrats will present and fight over in 2020.

GOOD FRIDAY MORNING — RIP former Rep. John D. Dingell, Jr., one of the greats. Email me at [email protected] and follow me on Twitter @morningmoneyben. Email Aubree Eliza Weaver at [email protected] and follow her on Twitter @AubreeEWeaver.
THIS MORNING ON POLITICO PRO FINANCIAL SERVICES — Katy O’Donnell on Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s letter calling on CFPB Director Kathy Kraninger to rescind a proposal that would weaken the payday lending rule. To get Morning Money every day before 6 a.m., please contact Pro Services at (703) 341-4600 [email protected].
TRUMP TRAPPED ON THE BORDER — Our Eliana Johnson, Burgess Everett, and Gabby Orr: “Inside the White House, the Trump team is increasingly aware that the president is trapped. Facing a Republican Party unwilling to back another government shutdown or a national emergency declaration to build his border wall …
“Trump is in an unfamiliar position, according to multiple White House officials and lawmakers: prepared, potentially, to accept a compromise foisted on him by Congress.”
ABOUT THE EMERGENCY DECLARATION — “Though the White House has worked to prepare an emergency declaration invoking the president’s sweeping executive powers, several West Wing aides have warned that invoking it would alienate some conservatives who have otherwise been loyal to the White House.”
THE BIG IDEA: IS THIS FULL EMPLOYMENT? — JPMorgan’s Jim Glassman: “The participation rate among prime working-age adults today remains well below its pre-recession peak, implying that as many as 800,000 potential workers may return to the job search as the labor market tightens further. If this is the case, the economy could continue adding jobs at its current rate for another year before full employment arrives.” Read more.
SENATE FINANCE WON’T FIX SALT — Our Bernie Becker, Nick Niedzwiadek and Ryan Hutchins: “The Senate Finance Committee won’t be taking another look at the limit on state and local tax deductions enacted in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, H.R. 1 (115), a spokesperson for Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said …
“Trump had invited the question by telling reporters on Wednesday that he would be open to revisiting the $10,000 cap, saying he had heard the new policy had been ‘severe’ on some taxpayers.
“But there’s little appetite for any changes in the GOP-controlled Senate, since the states most affected by the cap — California, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, for instance — are deep blue.” Read more.
NEW HIRE FOR DEUTSCHE PROBE — Our Zachary Warmbrodt: “The House Financial Services Committee has recruited Bob Roach, a seasoned investigator of financial industry misdeeds, to help run its probe of Deutsche Bank, a source familiar with the matter said.
“The hire is a major development in the coming investigation into the German lender, which is under scrutiny for its dealings with … Trump and its role in money laundering scandals. Roach previously worked for the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations under former Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) … Roach’s hiring was first reported by Bloomberg News.” Read more.
WATCHDOG ASKS FOR ROSS PROBE — Our Patrick Temple-West: “A government ethics watchdog is asking the Commerce Department’s inspector general to investigate whether Secretary Wilbur Ross violated disclosure rules concerning his holdings of BankUnited Inc. stock.
“In a letter sent to Commerce Inspector General Peggy Gustafson today, the Campaign Legal Center said Ross apparently violated the law by allegedly claiming in May 2017 to have sold his BankUnited stock. In an Oct. 31, 2018, disclosure report, Ross said he had “a mistaken belief” that an order to sell BankUnited holdings had occurred in 2017. The shares were worth up to $15,000.” Read more.
BB&T-SUNTRUST TO MERGE — Our Victoria Guida: “BB&T and SunTrust on Thursday announced they plan to join forces to become the sixth-largest retail bank in the U.S., in the wake of moves by the Federal Reserve that make it cheaper for regional lenders to grow.
“If regulators and shareholders sign off on the deal, the merger would create a bank with $442 billion in assets — smaller in size than only JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and U.S. Bank. … Congress last year passed legislation that sets $250 billion as the new asset threshold for more stringent regulations.
“But under the Fed’s proposed large bank framework, lenders with between $250 billion and $700 billion in assets would also see their requirements eased slightly, particularly when it comes to the amount of liquid assets they’re required to hold in case of an emergency.” Read more.
SCHULTZ WOULD BOOST TRUMP — Bloomberg’s Joshua Green: “Howard Schultz is unlikely to land in the White House if he makes an independent bid for the presidency, but he would probably pull enough votes away from a Democratic candidate to strengthen … Trump’s prospects for re-election.” Read more.
ECONOMISTS AGREE ANOTHER SHUTDOWN WOULD BE BAD NEWS — WSJ’s Harriet Torry: “Economists say a fresh government shutdown would take a toll on U.S. economic growth as well as business and consumer sentiment, as a deadline to reach a deal over border-wall funding approaches next week.
“Most of the private-sector economic forecasters, 58.9 percent, surveyed in recent days by The Wall Street Journal said another shutdown would have ‘somewhat’ of an impact on economic growth, while 16.1 percent said it would have a significant impact.” Read more.
DATA CENTER SMOKE CAUSES OUTAGE FOR WELLS FARGO CUSTOMERS — AP’s Ken Sweet: “Smoke at one of Wells Fargo’s data centers left some of the bank’s customers without access to online or mobile banking as well as other services Thursday. Wells Fargo said workers discovered the problem following routine maintenance.
“‘We’re working to restore all our services as soon as possible,’ said bank spokeswoman Hilary O’Byrne. The bank apologized to customers for any inconvenience caused by the system issues, and said it would reverse any Wells Fargo fees incurred as a result of the issues.” Read more.
THE END OF THE FINANCIAL CRISIS CHILL ON BIG BANK DEALS — NYT’s Michael de la Merced and Emily Flitter: “Two banks announced the industry’s biggest merger in a decade on Thursday, signaling bank executives’ growing confidence that the regulatory constraints imposed after the 2008 financial crisis have begun to loosen.
“The $28 billion deal between BB&T and SunTrust Banks would create a Southeastern juggernaut that would be the sixth-largest bank in the country — perhaps giving it the heft to compete against national behemoths like Wells Fargo, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase.” Read more.
Waters is already calling for ‘serious scrutiny’— Bloomberg’s Hannah Levitt: “BB&T Corp.’s planned acquisition of SunTrust Banks Inc. has at least one skeptic: House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters.
“The deal, creating the sixth-biggest commercial bank in the U.S., raises a lot of questions and should be put under the microscope, Waters said Thursday in an emailed statement. ‘This proposed merger between SunTrust and BB&T is a direct consequence of the deregulatory agenda that Trump and congressional Republicans have advanced,’ the California Democrat said.” Read more.
CONSUMER BORROWING TOPS $4T — AP’s Martin Crutsinger: “Consumer borrowing rose at a slower pace in December, but that still pushed total borrowing to a new record above $4 trillion for the first time. The Federal Reserve said Thursday that borrowing increased by $16.6 billion in December after a $22.4 billion advance in November. The December increase nudged the total up to a record $4.01 trillion. Borrowing had crossed the $3 trillion mark back in June 2013.” Read more.
** A message from H&R Block: Unlike other tax companies, we think clients should know the price of service before they begin filing — in person or online.
