Spring Awakening Broadway: Where Are They Now? (Part 1)

It's been 18 years since Spring Awakening first opened on Broadway and 15 years since the original production closed. I decided to do some digging on what everyone who performed in that production is doing these days.

Part 1 covers the original cast, while part 2 will cover replacements.

Jonathan Groff Melchior

Went on to several prominent roles on TV shows like Glee, movies like Frozen, and musicals like Hamilton (pictured.) He is currently in Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway.

Lea Michele Wendla

Notably starred in the TV show Glee and has released several albums. She was recently seen in Funny Girl on Broadway (pictured.)

John Gallagher, Jr. Moritz

Went on to star in several other Broadway shows including American Idiot. He has released an album under the name Johnny Gallagher. Recently appeared in Swept Away (pictured), a musical based on the music of The Avett Brothers.

Lauren Pritchard Ilse

Has a music career under the name LOLO and was notably featured on the Panic! At the Disco song "Miss Jackson" in 2013.

Jonathan B Wright Hanschen

Had a few acting credits on TV shows like Gossip Girl (pictured), now seems to be pursuing voice over work.

Gideon Glick Ernst

Has appeared in several other Broadway shows and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role in To Kill a Mockingbird in 2019 (pictured.) Some recent credits include the movie Maestro and a recurring role on the TV show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Skylar Astin Georg

Has had a variety of screen roles with musical elements, like the movie Pitch Perfect and the TV shows Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Zoey's Extraordinatory Playlist. He currently stars in the TV show So Help Me Todd (pictured.)

Brian Charles Johnson Otto (u/s Moritz)

Appeared on Broadway again in the ensemble of American Idiot (pictured.) Was recently on tour singing backup for Allen Stone.

Lilli Cooper Martha

Has been in several other Broadway shows including SpongeBob SquarePants and Tootsie (pictured) for which she and was nominated for a Best Featured Actress in a Musical Tony in 2019. She most recently provided voice acting for the TV series Hazbin Hotel.

Remy Zaken Thea

Has appeared in several off-Broadway shows, most notably Freckleface Strawberry The Musical (pictured.) Now owns a professional tutoring company in New York called Andersen Education.

Phoebe Strole Anna (u/s Wendla, Ilse)

Has appeared in several off-Broadway shows, most recently Kung Fu (pictured.) She is doing a lot of audiobook narration.

Christine Estabrook Adult Women

Continues to do a lot of TV work, most recently on the show Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (pictured.)

Stephen Spinella Adult Men

Continues to work in theater, film, and TV including a return to Broadway in The Velocity of Autumn and currently in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (pictured.)

Frances Mercanti-Anthony (u/s Adult Women)

Went on to appear in Broadway plays including Jerusalem. Now doing theater education work for organizations like Paper Mill Playhouse, Rutgers University, and New England Music Camp.

Rob Devaney (u/s Adult Men)

Appears to have moved away from acting around 2009 and now has a career in UX design.

Krysta Rodriguez Ensemble (u/s Wendla, Ilse, Anna, Martha, Thea)

Has performed in several other Broadway shows including The Addams Family and the revival of Spring Awakening. She was most recently touring in Into the Woods (pictured) and will appear in the Kennedy Center production of Bye Bye Birdie this summer.

Jennifer Damiano Ensemble (u/s Ilse, Anna, Martha, Thea)

Has performed in several other Broadway shows including American Psycho (pictured) and Next to Normal, for which she was nominated for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical Tony in 2009. Most recently appeared in Black No More off-Broadway.

Robert Hager Ensemble (u/s Melchior, Hanschen, Ernst, Otto, Georg)

Went on to join the 1st national tour of Spring Awakening as Hanschen. Has since appeared in several other Broadway shows and the national tour of Fun Home (pictured.) He is also writing his own musicals. Siluetas, for which he wrote music and lyrics, will be premiering at Power Street Theatre in Philadelphia this summer.

Gerard Canonico Moritz (replacement), Ensemble (u/s Moritz, Hanschen, Ernst, Otto, Georg)

Was in the show until it closed, by which time he was playing Moritz. Has appeared in many other Broadway and off-Broadway shows including Groundhog Day and Be More Chill (pictured), and is currently on Broadway in Almost Famous.

Winx Musical Casting -The Winx and the Trix

So, yknow how there's those extremely underrated winx stage musicals in the early 2000s in Italy and The Netherlands? What if we brought a production over to broadway? WELL, i've combined my winx fan braincell and my theatre kid braincell and created a casting. HERE YA GO HERES THE GORLS! (the boys will come later)

Bloom: Mallory Maedke

Mallory's mostly well known for being an alternate and the dance captain for the North American premiere (Chicago, Edmonton, Cambridge, and St. Paul) and Broadway production of Six the Musical. She has such an amazing voice that I feel like she could kill whatever material is in the show, both acting and singing material. Her dancing? Amazing. She was the dance captain for a reason.

Stella: Stephanie Styles

Stephanie's credits include: Katherine in the national tour of Newsies and Lois Lane/Bianca in the 2019 Broadway revival of Kiss Me, Kate, and Autumn on Zoey's Extrodinary Playlist. Her character has been described as having an "adorable flower child meets young Kristin Chenoweth vibe" and if that doesn't describe Stella perfectly? In everything I've seen her in, she just radiates stella energy.

Flora: Krystina Alabado

Krystina's credits include: Ensemble/Understudy The Extraordinary Girl and Whatsername in American Idiot, Vanden in American Psycho, Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls, Dot in Pasadena Playhouse's Sunday in the Park With George, Colombina in Hartford Stage's Kiss My Aztec. I've seen some videos of her and I feel like she radiates Flora energy.

Tecna: Caitlin Kinnunen

Caitlin's credits include Thea in Spring Awakening, Carolyn in The Bridges of Madison County and Emma Nolan in The Prom, which she was NOMINATED FOR A TONY FOR! She's such an amazing triple threat so, I think she could definately step into the wings of our favorite fairy of technology.

Lorna's credits include Understudying Zoe Murphy and Alana Beck in Dear Evan Hansen, Rosalia/Understudy Maria in the short lived 2020 revivial of West Side Story and Juliet in &Juliet, which she's in currently AND GOT A TONY NOMINATION FOR! . I've seen her in &Juliet and she's SO good. Her voice? Spectacular? Dancing? On top of it? Acting? A+.

Andrea's mostly well known for originating the role of Anne Boleyn in the North American Premiere (Chicago, Edmonton, Cambridge, and St. Paul) and Broadway production of Six the Musical, she's most recently in Stratford Festival's production of Rent as Mimi. I've seen her as Boleyn and she is FIERCE! She's also a short queen which definitely reenforces the short!Musa headcanon lets goooo

Renee's credits include: Regina George in Mean Girls. She's a Jimmy award winner and is currently releasing music. From what I've seen of her, she's SO talented. Her voice is KILLER. *it also reenforces the Belter!Icy pipeline so hell yeah* She's played a role similar to this so I think she could do a really good job as icy.

Isabella's credits include: Jasmine in Aladdin, Megara in Papermill Playhouse's production of Hercules (pictured) , and originating the role of Alyssa Greene in the Broadway production of The Prom. I've seen her in Hercules and she killled it. Her "I Won't Say I'm in Love' is spectacular and she really gave it her all with this material.

So i saw God’s show, Spring Awakening, and it was the best version I’ve seen live and I cried seven times. Here are my thoughts :)

The set was really cool, it had this tree with christmas lights upstage on the wall.

wendla came on wearing sheet and wore same sheet later when she entered the hayloft scene

her fairy queen dress was so cute!!!

love all the costumes were fucking awesome

wendla had a maturity that I’ve never seen her played with

the adults were all played by different actors, some of which were teen ensemble in the other scenes

mama reprise was BANGIN

so stompy and angry i knew we were going to have a good time

melchior was played the most sympathetic ive seen

even though he was intellectually smart, emotionally he was in the same place as everyone else and it worked

moritz was deaf and had an actor playing his voice!!

fun fact, i took an acting class where i did a scene with the actor who played moritz’s voice

I had to seduce them in the scene and it was over zoom it was a nightmare

they had moritz’s voice say litota multum lines

idk why they didn’t do what dwsa did for that scene

they didnt pull out mics to sing which i liked

melchior ran stage right all the sudden during all that’s known and i was like go white boy go!!!

bol was awesome but could have been like 2x explosive

an ensemble guy sang “it’s like just kiss some ass man”??

hanschen’s so extra he fuckin put his foot up on a chair to talk to ernst to say the achillies and patrolcus line

every time frauline knuppledick and herr knockenbruch exited they did this synchronized step turn to leave and it was weirdly funny

the girls laid on their stomachs and kicked their legs during my junk chorus!!!

hanschen masturbated facing away from audience

he was so dramatic and hilarious it was a good time

they gave otto’s my junk solo and thea’s second my junk solo to ensemble girls, one of which was my friend and she killed it

it was a good choice

ernst signed part of his touch me solo

melchior and voice of moritz touched moritz during ernst’s solo it was very beautiful and gay

melchior finger spelled genitalia for moritz

my friend in teen ensemble’s character had a gf in teen ensemble and they were very gay during touch me

wendla was really gay with an ensemble girl during touch me

and there was cool choreography!! bol, my junk, touch me, even mirror blue night and guilty ones had awesome choreography without being too distracting

obc eat your heart out

melchior was just as confused as wendla in woyb

she had this great balance of being curious and then hesitating with him

she was also very matter-of-fact about having to be home by five it was cute

wendla and melchior didn’t touch each others hands but like put them up close to each other and moved them

martha👀👀👀

she was angry and recognizes that she’s being abused and i loved it

she nodded after anna’s line

i’ve never seen martha played like that and it was refreshing

they signed beauty during tdikw

for ilse’s verse, martha was sitting behind her on the bed and ilse layed back on her and two ensemble girls put a sheet over her lap

they had a set peice that martha and ilse knelt on for part of tdikw and the girls spun it like in dwsa

they wrapped sheets kind pf restraint-like around martha and ilse toward the end of it

martha and ilse held hands and sang last part of tdikw to each other

all the boys except hanschen hugged moritz at the end of the i passed scene!!!

moritz’s dad signed “what” “failed” and “thank god my father never lived to see this day” to moritz and it BROKE ME

moritz screamed after he left and my heart shattered

the guys were bopping in a rock way with moritz at the end of attwn

shout out to whoever’s android ringtone went off when moritz pulled the gun out

melchior was crying at the beginning of the hayloft scene

i thought wow this is a young boy who doesn’t understand what he’s feeling

the actor really got it

wendla was trying to cheer him up with her line about running through the rain

and he took it as an invitation!!!! bitch!!!

wendla was confused and hesitant during i believe, it was clear that she didn’t understand what was happening

they held up a sheet in front of wendla and melchior while the father was speaking during guilty ones but i could still see them bro

wendla had no idea what had just happened and it was heartbreaking

melchior looked regretful but he still pulled her in and kissed her at the end of the song

she didn’t really kiss back

ilse signed some of her dialogue and part of blue wind to moritz

she was the only person who signed to him👀

she was wearing the big white shirt but just for dds

in the next scene at the funeral she was back in her dress from earlier in the show

when moritz signed laundry line he mimed hanging himself from it

moritz yelled for ilse after she left like in dwsa and it was heartbreaking

so was ilse’s line about lying on some trash heap

her voice was incredible

moritz’s voice walked off and moritz looked for him before killing himself😭

left behind BROKE ME

frau gabor and frau bergmann entered with their respective children

martha cut herr stiefel this look when she dropped her flower on the casket

she looked angry the whole number

my friend came in with her gf and they sat at the front of the stage and held each other

MORITZ’S VOICE WAS AT THE FUNERAL

they glared at herr stiefel and slammed their flower down😭

herr stiefel collapsed onto the casket i died

martha’s mascara was running😭

totally fucked was LIT

melchior had awesome energy

they did that weird choreo jonathan groff did in obc but it worked

melchior yelled YEEEEEES it was so funny

vineyard scene WAS THE BEST IVE SEEN IRL

it was a funny scene because hanschen was so extra, not because two boys were making out

you could see he really cared about ernst

ernst was so horny u could tell he was waiting for hanschen to make a move

they didn’t actually kiss, they did the hand over the mouth thing

both of them went in for that second kiss it was adorable

“and so you should” was not manipulative or creepy at all

hanschen and ernst did some of wendla and melchior’s choreo from woyb AND THEY INTERLACED THEIR FINGERS INSTEAD OF NOT TOUCHING

the end of the song was about them and it wasn’t just ilse delivering the letter

h and e hugged and ran off stage holding hands😭

you could see a shift when wendla realized what she did that got her pregnant and it broke my heart

she had the sheet from earlier wrapped around her during whispering and gathered it up and held it in front of her stomach at the very end of the song

i still find the reformatory scene weird and unnecessary

again, the actor who played melchior really understood the character and the show as a whole

he gave himself a minute to realize what he’d done when he saw wendla’s grave before breaking down

this director really got this show

wendla and moritz were physically restraining melchior from cutting himself in part of those youve known

he would not let go of their hands it was heartbreaking

ilse signed and sang the beginning of purple summer

then moritz showed up and signed with her while they looked at each other and they hugged at the end of the verse😭

ernst (who i’m kind of friends with) and vo moritz and were crying at this point and i was also crying but that made me cry harder

i talked to the actor who played moritz in my very broken asl after the show

it was cringe but he seemed to appreciate it (i said “wow!! you wow!! my name r-h-i-a-n-n-o-n. my asl bad. you wow!!”😭)

great show i cried 7 times and am crushing on like 4 different cast members

1. how were you introduced to the show?

I always knew it existed, but one day on a long car drive I just decided to sit down and listen to it, and then everything clicked.

2. Seen a production live?

No, sadly. The most recent performance in my area was a high school that production last year -- it was a big deal but I could not make it.

3. Dream role/character you relate to most

I would literally kill to play Ilse! Unfortunately most of her songs are right over my first passaggio rip

For character I relate to the most? Some weird combination of Wendla’s naïveté and Melchior’s pretentious bitchiness.

4. Favorite male character

Hanschen — there’s something so satisfying when you see him done right on stage (even though it’s rare).

5. Favorite female character

Ilse, but I feel like Anna and Thea are under appreciated.

6. Deaf West Revival or Original Broadway Cast?

OBC laid the groundwork, obviously, but DWSA all the way! I’m actually also partial to the Almeida production (unpopular opinion, I know) because the technical and design elements just give it its own hauntingly beautiful identity that is totally unique

7. Favorite song

Touch Me but also Don’t Do Sadness/Blue Wind but also Clouds Will Drift Away which was sadly cut

8. Least favorite song

Maybe this is a cop-out, but I always skip There Once Was A Pirate.

9. Favorite quote/line

Listening/To the souls in the fool's night/ Fumbling mutely with their rude hands/ And there's heartache without end

10. Favorite TV performance

Definitely Touch Me on Seth Meyers

11. Favorite cast member(s)

Daniel Durant and Alex Boniello dramatically signing along songs backstage (especially that one video where Daniel attempts guitar and Alex attempts the signs and it’s such a mess)

It’s about the passage of time, of the kids moving from one phase of their lives to another. They’re tapestries of their struggles and desires and dreams and guilt that they’ll always have, and they sing of everything they’ve known and the idealized future they hope to come. It’s a summer they might not see, but the seasons are changing anyway.

My Official Spring Awakening Character Ranking

Hanschen. Especially Andy Mientus's Hanschen. My bi king. He's the actual sweetest and he and Ernst are so hkhkdjsjfksjsh I love them

Ernst. He's so fucking adorable and like I said, he and Hanschen are just. Goals

Ilse. SHE. She slays so hard and Blue Wind is one of my favorite songs.

Moritz. My bby. I just want to hold him and tell him everything will be ok🥺 Plus, his songs are fucking JAMS

Anna. I love this girl. She's got such an interesting character I swear I could write a whole essay on her.

Martha. SOMEONE PROTECT THIS BBY. She just slays so hard and the Dark I Know Well is a banger.

Georg. SJDKSKSJSKDJDJDJ Maybe I just love Alex Wyse but Georg is so funny. Plus I ship him and Otto so their dynamic is really cute to me, he's such a big dork 🥺 But he's a minor character so he's lower on the list.

Wendla. I don't love or hate her, she's just kind of boring to me. I don't have a lot to say about her, but Sandra May Frank and Katie Boeck slayed (Can we get Katie Boeck's "Mama Who Bore Me" on Apple Music? Please? I love her sjsksjdjskdj)

Otto. He would be higher if he had more than 3 lines oop-😳 But he's still a cutie. Go little sailor. I have nothing bad to say about this boi.

Thea. This is where we get into the characters I REALLY dislike. Thea is- Where do I even start? She's so annoying and kind of b*tchy at times. Idk, I want to like her, Especially since she's Hanschen's sister, but I can imagine Hanschen wouldn't like her either so.

Melchior. If I were including the adults on this list I would rank them higher, Melchior is the worst of literally any character in Spring Awakening ever. He's literally evil. I hate him and I wish he died in the end. What a horribly written character.

Friends, I need your help. Here’s a quick summary, in case you’re a newcomer to my blogs: I’ve adapted Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening (as translated by Jonathan Franzen) into a three-episode miniseries, and I plan on pitching it to production companies. In addition, I adapted and acted in three short films based on the miniseries; these films are meant to serve as tastebud teasers for what the full, finished work might look like.

First, my friends and I made Spring Awakening - A Short Film, abridged from Act 1, Scene 3, in which Wendla (played by me), Martha, and Thea discuss their crushes.

The next film was Moritz and Ilse, an adaptation of Act 2, Scene 7, a.k.a. Moritz’s pre-suicide scene, specifically when he encounters Ilse (yours truly).

The third short film was In Order To Have A Child, adapted from Act 2, Scene 2, wherein Mrs. Bergmann gives Wendla (again, moi) her version of the facts of life. This film and Moritz and Ilse will hopefully be available on YouTube sometime soon.
