It's Fictional Throwdown Friday!
This Week's Fighters...
Spongebob vs Kirby!
Conditions:
Speed Equalized.
Scenario:
Spongebob and Kirby are the final contestants in the cook-fight championship, where the contests have to simultaneously defeat their opponents in combat and cook a delicious meal better than their opponents and only one can take home the gold.
Analysis: Spongebob
Tell me.... WHO LIVES IN A PINEAPPLE UNDER THE SEA! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!
Ah, yes, Spongebob SquarePants. We love him, we meme him, and we remember him as the purest essence of childhood cartoon nostalgia. This goofy goober, nautical nincompoop, and asexual icon may seem like a harmless wimp on the surface... and to an extent, he kinda is. His life long dream is to work as a fry cook at a dead end fast food restaurant, he once struggled to lift a glass of water, and he's easily small enough to fit in your hand, regularly getting overpowered by ordinary humans. You'd be forgiven for mistaking Bikini Bottom's best fry cook for a harmless goofball, wing nut, or knucklehead mcspazatron. But just you wait, this fry cook has a lot more up his virtually nonexistent sleeves.
There are three acronyms that one must always remember when discussing Spongebob. E.V.I.L, P.O.O.P., and T.F.I.B. Don't recognize that last one? It stands for Toon Force Is Bullshit.
When Spongebob isn't struggling to lift Teddy Bears, he's effortlessly rotating the entire planet, sucking up the entirety of Earth's oceans, and absorbing enough water to replace the moon in the sky. We're in for some shit now.
As a sea sponge, or, really more of a kitchen sponge I guess, Spongebob is remarkably durable and flexible. He can freely shspeshift into nearly any form he can imagine, regenerate from getting reduced to dust, duplicate himself millions of times, and absorb any liquid or physical attack thrown at him. Like the time he was able to walk around getting punched all week without feeling any of it, or the time he literally laughed off being erased from existence.
Moreover, he's a master of nearly any hobby or job he picks up. He's so good at cooking Krabby Patties that they can become sentient, cancel mind control, and make people romantically attracted to them, while his bubble blowing skills let him create torpedoes, create sentient life, and create entire fuctioning societies out of bubbles. He's such a Rockstar that his music can physically assault you and free you from mind control and one time he was able to rock out so hard he transformed into the sun.
On top of that, Spongebob can create anything he can conceivably need in any situation, either by drawing it with the magic pencil (which, yes, later seasons show he still has), blowing bubbles, letting his tears come to life to revive him from the dead, or just by willing it into existence with his imagination. And not only can the pencil's eraser erasing things from reality, but he can even erase reality itself by pulling on a string and unraveling the entire universe.
And then... there's his ability... to break the fourth wall.
Not only can he ride on the scene transitions, not only can he exit the comic book he's in, but he can also rewrite the plot of his own story as it's happening. And that's without the magic book from the second movie. He can just... do that. On his own.
He's strong enough to fuse together with Patrick down to the level of his DNA by hugging him really hard, fast enough to watch Patrick run to the sun in back in seconds, and strong enough to defeat and capture everyone else in Bikini Bottom within a single night (albiet with Patrick's help).
While this all may sound unbeatable, there is one major issue for Mr. SquarePants. He can only survive out of water for so long and if exposed to extreme heats outside the water for too long, he risks drying up and suffocating to death. But, that's okay, because if that does happen, his tears will come to life and resurrect him from the dead anyways.
So next time you think to underestimate your childhood icon, you'd do well to remember... he's ready.
Analysis: Kirby
Kirby, Kirby, Kirby. It's the name you should know, they're the star of the show, Kirby's the one. While this impossibly powerful little puffball's backstory is by an large a mystery, the widely accepted explanation is that they are a reincarnation of the immense god-like being known as Void that came about as a result of Void interacting with positive emotions. They are the positive counterpart to Zero's and Void Termina's dark and hateful incarnations, who came into being as a result of Void interacting with powerful negative emotions.
As a result of this, Kirby is paradoxically both horrifyingly powerful and unrelentingly cute, cuddly, and friendly. They may aspire to no higher cause than eating cake, making friends, and sleeping, but I do not exaggerate in the slightest when I call their power godlike. Kirby has been stated several times to have infinite power and has defeated beings amped by the Master Crown, which was stated to have the same. This alone would make them universe level at least, but they have feats that put them well above that. The parallel dimension known as... Another Dimension (great name guys, not confusing at all) is shown to contain at least sixteen universes, with Magalor's defeat destroying all of them.
But Kirby has far more than just raw power on their side. As a matter of fact, they are well known for their versatility thanks to their Copy Ability. With it, they can inhale an enemy or object into their maw and transmute it into either a star shaped projectile or a copy ability, allowing them to copy a wide variety of powers from their defeated foes. They can combine these abilities, store them for later, or transform these powers into allies who can fight alongside them. And provided their opponent is too big for them to inhale, Kirby has ways of copying their powers anyways. By tossing their ability at their foe as an energy projectile, they can transmute enemies into copy abilities or they can just scan enemies outright with the copy ability known as... Copy.
These copy abilities come in a wide variety, ranging from those that grant Kirby mastery over a specific weapon to those who bestow Kirby with some form of elemental power. Notable ones include ice Kirby, who can freeze foes solid even if they can survive in space, cook Kirby who can transmute enemies into food, magic Kirby who can use magic for a variety of purposes, ranging from summoning food to summoning allies, and Copy Kirby, which can copy the powers of whoever Kirby scans. Their most powerful Abilities can even do damage to the fabric of reality itself, ranging from their Ultra Sword cutting holes into other universes to Time Crash, which creates an explosion so powerful that it damages time itself, effectively allowing Kirby to stop time.
Even without their Copy abilities, Kirby is remarkably tough. Their incredibly small size of a mere eight inches makes them remarkably tough to hit, they can regenerate from being impaled in an instant, can inflate themselves with air and fly through the sky, and summon a warp star to help them fly across the galaxy in seconds. And if all that sounds like a lot for one little pink puffball, Kirby can just speed dial up three other identical Kirby's to help kick your ass on command. Or throw a Friend Heart at you to forcibly befriend you.
And if you somehow make it through all of that and manage to kill Kirby? They can simply come back as a ghost, steal your life energy, and regenerate their body from nothing. Unless you can kill ghosts, Kirby's just gonna come straight back.
Having said all that, Kirby isn't perfect. While they are shown to be strangely technologically and scientifically adept, they have also shown to be incredibly naive. They've been manipulated into doing the villain's bidding on more than one occasion and they tend to simply jump headlong into situations without any kind of plan.
While Kirby may not be Nintendo's strongest character as is widely believed, they are every bit the godkiller you've heard they are. The next eldritch terror that steps foot on the peaceful planet of Popstar is gonna end up like all the rest, running for it's goddamn life.
Throwdown Theme:
youtube
Throwdown Breakdown:
This... is a tricky one.
Both of these pint sized power houses have absolutely massive arsenals to throw at each other, with several of their abilities simply canceling each other out. Both of these characters are small enough to fight inside the palm of your hand, are nigh-unkillable, can breathe underwater forever, and can duplicate themselves in numerous ways.
Going for the kill is grossly out of character for both of them, but Spongebob is the only one with a way to actually kill their opponent. Kirby can't destroy someone who can come back from nothing, whereas the Magic Pencil would leave them with nothing to come back from. Spongebob has the means to create anything he can imagine to fight Kirby with, but Kirby can just copy whatever he creates by inhaling it or using Copy. Similarly, Kirby can also create beings to fight on their behalf with their Artist (not to be confused with Paint) ability, handly countering out Spongebob's bubbles.
Spongebob has quite few counters to Kirby's tricks. He can simply shapeshift out of being turned into a copy ability or food, his absorbent abilities makes powers like Fighter and Water useless or detrimental, he can simply draw a portal to escape Kirby's stomach pocket reality, and krabby patties can cancel out the effects of the Friend Heart (as well as other times Spongebob has resisted mind control). But, by that same notion, Kirby's ice is more than capable of freezing people who can withstand the vacuum of space, meaning it should work fine on Spongebob, the Pure Hearts is better mind manipulation than what Spongebob has shown to resist (they can counter out the mind control powers of Void Termina, whose incarnations such as Dark Matter can control entire planets), and should be much stronger physically.
The reason I Equalized Speed for this fight initially was because I assumed Spongebob was exponentially faster. Then I realized that both of them can move even after time has been destroyed, placing both at about equal speed. That's gow close this matchup is and that's how overpowered both of them are. Which is not at all helped by how few options they have to out each other down.
However, there are a few things that just barely make this Kirby's game.
Kirby is stronger, smarter, and more experienced. Spongebob can destroy the universe, but Kirby can tank sixteen blowing up in their face. Both can be incredibly naive and overly trusting, but Kirby is smart enough to build a rocket ship by themself. And both are no stranger to saving the world, but only Kirby fights off eldritch abominations on a near daily basis.
Spongebob has some clear win conditions here. But the issue is actually being willing to use them in this context. Spongebob isn't going to murder his competition in a cooking competition, so the magic pencil is out. That leaves fourth wall breaking and plot manipulation. However, Spongebob has never used those abilities in a straight up fight before. Even in situations where his life or the world was at risk, Spongebob has never simply rewritten the plot so that he wins a fight or competition and he likely wouldn't do so here. Because this fight is, in context, a friendly competition and it's really not like Spongebob to willingly cheat.
Kirby, meanwhile, has a few ways of incapacitating Spongebob. Their ice and Friend Hearts should be more potent than what Spongebob and his resistance to such things can handle, their strength and greater experience would give them an advantage in combat, and they can match Spongebob's versatility.
This fight is genuinely the closest one we've had all year. But, I think Kirby has just enough to overcome their aquatic adversary.
Spongebob wins the cooking competition though. Not even Cook Kirby competes with that. If Neptune himself can't match Spongebob, I don't know what Kirby can do.
Does that make this a tie? Eh, Throwdown's the name of the game so that's what I'll count.
This Throwdown's Winner is....

Kirby!

hi! I love your blog, I've been following since before I found out I was autistic!
I have a Spongebob question for you though. What do you think are the most important episodes of Spongebob? Like particularly iconic ones or something? Basically I want your take and some fun facts about the show because it's one of my favorites. Thanks!
Ooh good question! Two important episodes that come to mind are Dying for Pie and Band Geeks. The former because we get to see that Squidward doesn't really hate SpongeBob at all, and the latter gives Squidward his first happy ending.
Then there's Friend or Foe, that explains the history of Mr Krabs and Plankton. And in Season 12 we have SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout, a special 44 minute 20th anniversary episode where SpongeBob and Patrick tour the surface, and we even see the cast play as human versions of the characters!
Now, fun facts:
It's the second longest running American children's cartoon after Arthur. Now that Arthur is over, SpongeBob will likely eventually take over that position
It's got a 4th movie in production, as well as three spin-off movies. One is about Sandy and there's rumours one will be about Plankton
The original version of the Sponge on the Run movie was going to be about an alien cat invasion. Personally I wish we'd gotten this instead of another "missing Gary" storyline
The show's original name was SpongeBoy Ahoy!, this had to be changed when Nickelodeon discovered SpongeBoy was already a trademarked name, and Stephen Hillenburg insisted on keeping "sponge" in the name to ensure nobody mistook him for a piece of cheese (something I did when I first saw the show in 2003)

What is the strangest Ads have you ever seen?
Oh boy, let me tell you of a little ad campaign that gave tiny me actual nightmares :)
So, as a kid, I watched a lot of Nickelodeon; be it Drake & Josh, Fairly Odd Parents, iCarly, you name it- but the show I watched most of all was SpongeBob. No joke, I LOVED this funky sponge lad and his friends, to the point you could give me a description of a single scene and I‘d know what episode you were talking about. Part of that was probably because of the schedule- airing both right after I always came home and as the last show before the movies at 20:15, so I was able to catch pretty much every episode.
Only one evening, when the pre-movie episode started airing, the portrait guy did his iconic "OHHHH“, and the camera went underwater to kick off the song with everyone’s favorite sponge slamming the door open to greet a new day-
He wasn’t there.
The scene froze.
Silence.
Only broken when a single message finally flashed across the screen:
"SPONGEBOB IS GONE.“
Cut to the…studio? And a guy reports that SpongeBob is missing from Nickelodeon, they’re searching for him and need help, a website was launched for viewers to send clues and sightings in because no one knows what happened, where is he, who did this, what’s going on- and then the usual program continued without change.
Except there was change, because SpongeBob was gone. Everywhere. Wherever SpongeBob would normally be in those in-between commercial breaks, the program previews, even the icons on the Nick website, everywhere he‘s ever been- he was blackened out. Only an empty silhouette remained. Because SpongeBob wasn’t there.
SpongeBob was gone.
Tumblr media
So when the time finally came for his episodes to air, they didn’t. Instead, It‘d cut back to the studio, and the guy would say that he was still missing, but people sent in clues from the website (that was actually real btw) and they’d show it over the course of the weeks. I watched that program exactly once, and they showed three things. A letter asking SpongeBob to please come back because everyone misses him, a photoshopped image of the sponges’ silhouette jumping up in front of a sunset beach. But do you wanna know what the last thing they showed was?
A minute long video of someone desperately running for their life through thick foliage blocking all their view with the only sounds audible being the rustling branches, their labored panting, and an ominous distorted laughter howling with the wind.
And then the dude went like "wow thank you for the clues :D could that really be SpongeBob? We don’t know and he’s still missing! See ya tomorrow!“ and I had to go to sleep. I could not go to sleep. Like. Sir. SIR. Is SpongeBob getting hunted? IS HE HUNTING SOMEONE!? HELLO!??? WHATS GOING ON!??
Yea. So this went on for a while, every day SpongeBob was still missing and they played that program showing off a bunch of the things that were sent in.
Until they randomly announced that he was found and everything turned to normal again from one moment to the next. Turns out was at the frickin Nickland section of Moviepark this entire time. Bruh.
And this whoooole thing, was an ad campaign. Not for said Nickland like I thought back the time, cuz that would’ve at least made somewhat sense.
Nope, it was for one. Single. SpongeBob episode.
All of this.
For the episode where SpongeBob falls off a random cliff gets amnesia and becomes mayor of some random city for a day.
Bruh.

Top 8 Latin Music In 2020
- Sech "Relacion"
Sech is making the rounds with another anthem for the ladies, teaming up with Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Rosalia, and Farruko for an empowering remix.
“Relacion” is about a woman who has moved on from a toxic relationship and is living her best single life. “Everything changed now, it’s her turn,” the chorus kicks off, celebrating lyrics on self-worth and self-love.
“The remix was born out of an idea that I had all of a sudden,” Sech previously told Billboard, “and at the same time, I heard that many of my colleagues liked the song.” The first person to jump on the track was Balvin, followed by Yankee, Farruko, and finally Rosalia. “This is truly something beautiful for me,” he added.
- Tainy x J Balvin "Agua"
Who would have ever thought that a timeless children’s song fused with reggaeton would make sense? Tainy and J Balvin made it work.
“Agua,” released in July by Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon, and NEON16, laces the iconic SpongeBob intro with a party-starting reggaeton, bass, and flute melody, making it the go-to summer song for the entire family. In the playful lyrics, Balvin gives a shout out to some of the iconic characters of the franchise.
The collaboration is the lead single off the forthcoming SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run movie soundtrack, which was executive produced by award-winning producer Tainy and renowned industry leader Lex Borrero.
- Ozuna "Caramelo"
After spending his best quarantine life out on the sea and creating TikTok videos, Ozuna returns with brand new music dubbed “Caramelo.”
“Caramelo," out Thursday (June 11), is a never-before-heard song with catchy hip-shaking and head-bobbing reggaeton beats. With lyrics such as “I tried you again, your mouth does not lose its candy flavor / we let ourselves go, you are my bandit and I am your bandit,” Ozuna tells the story of two people who have undeniable chemistry.
Paying homage to its title, which translates to candy, a colorful music video, directed by Nuno Gomes, shows Ozuna in a Candyland-inspired setting as models enjoy sweet treats such as ice cream, bubble gum, lollipops, and more.
- Nio Carcia x Anuel AA x Myke Towers x Brray x Juanka "La Jeepota"
After making the rounds with “Te Bote (Remix)” next to Casper, Darell, Nicky Jam, Bad Bunny, and Ozuna -- which landed at No. 36 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 2018 -- Nio Garcia unleashed “La Jeepeta” in January.
The chorus was born inside a jeep after the power went off at Garcia’s recording studio in Puerto Rico. In January, he dropped the first version of “La Jeepeta” -- a catchy mid-tempo reggaeton -- in collaboration with Brray and Juanka, released via Flow La Movie and powered by GLAD Empire. Three months later, and in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Anuel AA and Myke Towers jumped on the remix, bringing “La Jeepeta” to a whole ‘nother level.
Unlike the original, which did not secure a spot on the Hot Latin Songs chart, the remix arrived in April and debuted at No. 41 on the chart dated May 9. The remix later entered the top 10, pushing 12-9 on the list dated July 18, securing Nio his second top 10, Anuel’s 17th, and the first for Towers, Brray and Juanka. Currently, it's at No. 4 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated July 25.
- Bad Bunny "Yo Perreo Sola"
Bad Bunny has dropped a reggaeton anthem for independent women who like to dance alone at the club. “Yo Perreo Sola,” which translates to “I twerk alone,” kicks off with the voice of emerging Puerto Rican artist Nesi (real name: Genesis Rios) and forms part of Bunny’s chart-topping 2020 album YHLQMDLG.
On Friday, the Latin Grammy winner dropped the song's empowering music video, in which he is dressed in full drag, advocating for sexual diversity, women’s rights and the LGBTQ community.
In the clip, co-directed by Stillz and Benito himself, the Puerto Rican singer is joined by a group of women who are dancing freely to the song. “If she doesn’t want to dance with you, respect her, she twerks alone,” reads the empowering PSA message at the end.
- The Black Eyes Peas X J Balvin "RITMO [Bad Boys For Life]"
Spanglish music is taking the world by storm and J Balvin is at the forefront of this phenomenon. The Colombian singer has been collaborating with several English-speaking artists, including DJ Khaled, Dua Lipa, and Tyga, just to name a few. One of his most popular Spanglish songs is "RITMO" featuring The Black Eyed Peas, which earned them their first No. 1 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales (via Billboard).
"RITMO," which means rhythm in Spanish, is a new twist on the Eurodance '90s hit "Rhythm of the Night" by Italian group Corona. The new version combines futurist and Afro-infused reggaeton vibes with verses of the original song plus new additions in Spanish (via Songfacts). The hit is part of the soundtrack for the 2020 film "Bad Boys for Life," starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. While Balvin and The Black Eyed Peas' version has become widely popular, there's also a remix featuring Jaden Smith in the movie soundtrack. What's behind the lyrics of "RITMO"?
- Black Eyed Peas, Ozuna + J.Rey Soul "Mamacita"
“Mamacita” is a Latin American word which basically translates to ‘sexy lady’. And in keeping true to the term’s origin, Jason Derulo has teamed up with Puerto Rican artist Farruko to present a song primarily in Spanish, though a good portion of it is also sung in English. Derulo handles all of the English sections, while he also drops some Spanish alongside his collaborator.
This is one of those songs where if you understand the title then you pretty much understand its contents. It features the homeys feening on a carnal level for a certain lady they are interacting with. What impresses them the most about this woman is her body. And the reason they are referring to her as “mamacita” is apparently because she is from Chile, a South American country whose official language is Spanish. And what they are imploring her to do, even more than anything is to whine, as in dance in a suggestive manner.
So this song fits the trend Spanglish (Spanish and English) songs which have been rising in popularity in recent years. And its specific purpose, besides being a dance song, is to express appreciation for South (i.e. Latin) American women.
- J.Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny & Tainy "un Dia [One Day"
J Balvin is known for producing some super catchy tunes. Whether he's collabing with top artists like Beyoncé on "Mi Gente" or dropping solo smashes like "Azul," there's no doubt that Balvin has star power. After Balvin released "Un Dia" in the summer of 2020 with Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny, and Tainy, fans couldn't help but wonder: What do J Balvin's "Un Dia" lyrics mean in English? We've got the answer.

Riffing the Reef: “Good Neighbors”
This was written with the intent to start riffing apart Spongebob episodes since going about it in a general way would lead me to rant on everything under the sun. I will select episodes that need to be riffed, immediately and definitely, and begin riffing them as needed. Also, I will not take requests unless I can have a valid reason to riff them, other than a character being out of character. With that in mind, I am only criticizing the episodes and not the show in general. The show is credited to Stephen Hillenburg. Please enjoy.
We can't go on and deny it. Spongebob Squarepants used to be one of the greatest and funniest cartoons on Nickelodeon, nay on the air. It took inspiration from 'Ren and Stimpy', another classic Nick cartoon, and the evidence remains to this day. It had pizzazz, humor, and a sort of distinct charm with Spongebob being a likable protagonist while still having moments of advanced stupidity. Sometimes he was in the right, other times he was in the wrong.    He always learned his lessons and kept being the same happy-go-lucky sponge we watched on Friday Night Nicktoons.    Sure, he had some downer moments, but he was always perked and peaked, and soon became a cultural icon.    But then . . . it all turned sour. How you may ask?    Let me answer that question with this small tangent.     The Spongebob Squarepants Movie was planned to be the final Spongebob Squarepants animation, with the creator himself having gone off to start a career in marine biology. Smart move. The film was made out to be Spongebob's biggest adventure, and it was: King Neptune, an adorkable princess, Mr. Krabs getting frozen, Squidward showing brains, Plankton actually winning for once, Dennis, David Hasselhoff successfully being shoehorned in, an epic quest, and a Twisted Sister parody song with awesome guitar riffs.
The movie. Was awesome.    More importantly, it demonstrated how Spongebob had come of age in his own time and how he was ready to move on. He was even shown in the epilogue images doing the things he always does, but now with the respect and responsibility of being the manager of the Krusty Krab 2.    Given this information, continuing the series after the movie would have killed the movie. The lessons and experiences Spongebob had learned from the movie would not be remembered, the Krusty Krab 2 would be gone and everything would remain unchanged. That being said, since the movie was considered by many to be the true ending for Spongebob and friends, the fourth season was a large slap in the face.    To Nickelodeon, it was a business decision. The movie brought in a record amount of viewers and cash, and was generally well-recieved, aside from some negative criticism about the amount of singing and unnecessary filler in some parts, but that's beside the point. Hillenburg decided to move on from Spongebob and do what he wanted, but Nickelodeon decided to cash in on the movie's popularity, and created new seasons with new writers and artists for Spongebob Squarepants.    And since everyone watched the new episodes with the added expectation of it being like the movie, even the specials of Spongebob from season 4 onward, Nick gained the ratings and money needed to continue producing more seasons. Now the show is going on season nine, and the show has become what most would consider 'adult swim' channel entertainment.    Thus, the series became what is called in the trope community a 'franchise zombie'. This means the show is continuing down the same path as before, the Status Quo is God, and it is constantly brought back from old drenches.    I could go on about how Nick jumped the shark, how their newer writers were also old writers from previous seasons, and how most of the season four to five episodes were shorts cut up into 5-7 minutes each, but that would take all day and I want to tackle things like this one at a time. Not all at once.    Way too much vernacular for my fingers to type out.        Thus, I feel it necessary to state that many, if not all, of the post-movie Spongebob Squarepants episodes are crap.    Many names come to mind in how bad they are: "The Splinter". "Pet Sitter Pat". "Smooth Jazz at Bikini Bottom". "A Pal for Gary". "One Coarse Meal". "Squid Baby". "The Thing". "Driven to Tears". "Rule of Dumb". The list goes on from there.    These episodes and more are given the harshest of critiques for children's programming, and are often scrutinized by longtime fans of the series, if any still exist. The main reasons for these episodes' condemnation?    Their quality and quantity.    These episodes feature characters who are placed into horrible situations for no reason than to either be tortured, placed there just for the sake of plot convenience, or placed with a deus-ex-machina that makes everything completely unnecessary. Sometimes these characters are flanderized beyond belief, others are defined as jerks throughout, and in the case of Mr. Krabs, Spongebob and Patrick most of the time, are made completely unlikable.    These episodes also feature some, if not all, of the following: mean-spirited humor, anti-humor, disgusting shots, clunky dialogue, out of character moments, torture, gross out humor, gore, adult jokes that go over children's heads, severe sterotyping, insulting humor, false outcomes, cliche plot devices, and just plain bad writing in general.    Making episodes and cartoons like this in general is a bad idea. Kids watch this show not only because it's their demographic but because they like watching cartoons about funny things. Constantly writing and creating episodes where a character gets a toenail ripped off, or abuses a pet snail for no reason other than plot, immediately send the wrong messages to kids. They'll either be grossed out or be forbidden from watching a violent show by their own parents.    The creator himself even stated the show has become something that should be aired on 'adult swim'.    I can believe it. I also know my mom has banned my sisters from watching the show.    After re-watching a few episodes, I can see why.    If we take all of the previous statements made before and try to form a given conclusion, we always come to this: Spongebob Squarepants has become one of the worst cartoons in history. It has come to deserve this title wholeheartedly. And considering it has to compete with Family Guy, I'm not surprised at all.    Spongebob episode quality had a drop in many seasons, with seasons 6 and 7 being the most devious with the most infamous episodes. Season 4 had a few hits and misses, while season 5 had less hits and more tries. The once splendid animation to me has now become creepy and despondent, like it was purposely making me want to turn off . . . my . . .TV . . .    That may be their true intent, but I need my TV for anime.        Sorry, writers. No dice.    As to why I'm just now bringing up the episodes when earlier I was praising it is because a good show can have bad episodes. Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends had 'Everyone Knows It's Bendy', and Powerpuff Girls had 'Town and Out' and maybe 'PeePee Gees'. Spongebob Squarepants has had a good run, but the episodes have shrunken in quality and merit, and it reflects that through the writing and characters.    And, considering how everyone keeps talking about the show while I have had almost NO say in the matters, I feel it necessary to take a stance on some of the episodes that either tugged at my heartstrings or yanked out my heart and stomped on it. These episodes have to be taken apart, lest the writers of now never learn what the show did wrong.    That way, these mistakes can never be made again.    Hopefully.    One such episode that left me scratching my head was "Good Neighbors" from season 4.    I consider this to be the first truly 'bad' episode of Spongebob. Not only are some of the animations and screenshots disturbing, but Spongebob and Patrick become incredibly stupid for the sake of the plot while Squidward is placed as the butt of their torture and jokes. Another name for this from other critics is a 'Squidward torture porn'.    Now, before I go on, I have to admit: I hate Squidward. He's an egotistical, spineless and spiteful squid who often reviles at his own employment, longs for the fancy life and enjoys only his pursuits of arts. His artwork is terrible because he sees himself as perfection and sophistication, thus uses himself as a muse. This in turn makes his artworks hard to look at, and like what happened with 'Bold and Brash', get thrown away. He is shown as selfish, self-centered and a stickler in many an episode, and often reviles in Spongebob's happiness and positivity.    Now you see why I hate the guy.    Of course, he gained his moments of sympathy, such as when he is confronted with his high school rival Squilliam Fancyson, who seems to be his antithesis. Squilliam can even be stated as what Squidward wants to be: perfection, a god and even a fancy gentleman. However, something will always hold Squidward back, either by plot device, plot or some sort of personality trait. He does have moments where he impresses Squilliam, such as hosting the Krusty Krab as his own restaurant with Spongebob's help, or rocking out at the Bubble Bowl, also with Spongebob's help.    That being said, it is also wise to note that I feel Squidward placed too much hate onto Spongebob most of the time. The yellow cube was often doing his best to help the cephalopod, and often times his own quirks made the good deeds backfire. Episodes like "Are You Happy Now?" and "Tiki Dream" are two that come to mind with this.    I'd say a word about PATRICK, but THAT is for another time.    So, I've stated Squidward is a prick, can be a major jerk, and Spongebob often helps him see the light. It just takes a while for Squidward to see it. Hmm . . . Spongebob and Squidward are opposites in this case, but not with just being happy and sad. The two are two sides of the same coin; Squidward is mopey and pathetic, fed up with fulfilling his dreams while Spongebob tries his best to become a fulfilled character with goals and dreams.    Aside from that depth, and given that I've gone on this tangent with a purpose in mind, consider this: Squidward has often liked Spongebob, and admits it in certain episodes like "SB-129".    In "Good Neighbors", however, Spongebob is showing his usual brand of stupidity and naivety, while bothering Squidward, who later yells loudly at Patrick and Spongebob for being horrible neighbors. Something once touched on in "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" and "Opposite Day".    Why did that work there and be funny while here it was a bad idea?    A few reasons, actually.    "Good Neighbors" revolves around Squidward wanting to just enjoy a nice, quiet day, like a previous episode of Spongebob called "Squid's Day Off".    The first problem is this episode is borrowing and/or stealing a direct plot line or idea from a previous episode. This is considered rehashing, and this is a major author no-no. You never rehash an old storyline or plotline unless you can expand on it, make it better and more detailed, or solve the problems that were with it before.    Rewriting it into a newer season with a different style and name is still rehashing, and looks like copy-pasting on paper. In other words, THIS IS CHEATING.    Furthermore, "Squid's Day Off" did this well to begin with, because Squidward's conscience kept playing with him. It was actually funny to see him worry his head off about things Spongebob would never do, such as destroy the Krusty Krab. He even admitted he wanted his job back at the end of the episode because he was worried.    Showing morality with the character is the best way to connect with the audience. Much better than some cheap laugh.    But no; Squidward ends up planning out the perfect Sunday, and Spongebob and Patrick come out of nowhere to ruin it.    The second problem with this episode is Spongebob and Patrick in general. They are flanderized to be stupid and naive as possible, when in previous episodes, Spongebob was accepting of limits and wants for others of the sea. He saw his own faults when he shrunk everyone in Bikini Bottom, and stopped himself from doing dangerous things with Patrick in "Life in a Day". He knows limits and accepts them.    In this episode, however, Spongebob is completely ignorant of Squidward's frustration and anger, nor does he seem to be aware of his own morality index. What he was doing is wrong, he should have known it was wrong, but he did it anyway.    Patrick being there is more of a double-marker of him being stupid for stupid's sake. That's another nitpicky rant for another time, but for now, having there just furthers the stupidity.    The two constantly barge in on Squidward as he tries to relax on his only day off, (in a comfy and casual way no less, which actually looks peaceful), and cause trouble for him. The two end up being told to paint polka dots on trees and accidentally paint Squidward to where his eyes are hurt and he looks ill.    They steal his fancy pedicure and Sunday time relaxing, ruin his Sunday paper, and drive him mad, and for what, you may ask?    To let Squidward become the leader of their Secret Royal Order of the Good Neighbor Lodge.    Again, this was touched on before, and done better, in other previous episodes of Spongebob. This episode is a continuity rehashing of over ten separate episodes of the previous seasons, with less humor and more anger filled dialogue. Squidward ended up deserving the hurt he needed in those other episodes as well because he acted like a jerk in "Club Spongebob", "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" and "Squid's Day Off".    Moreso, Spongebob, and Patrick just randomly break into Squidward's house, wearing fezes, and just decide to annoy him right when he wants to relax. This is a case of plot convenience gone wrong and a Squidward Torture Porn in the making.    Furthermore, Squidward only wanted to relax, something we all can relate to. He was only trying to be himself and enjoy a day off from his terrible job with a terrible boss. Mr. Krabs, I'm looking at you! He had no reason to be tormented or tortured by the two of them. This came out of nowhere for him.    You could say it was because he tossed Spongebob out of his window by saying it was Sunday and he didn't have to go to work, but again, it makes Squidward look like he's in the wrong because Spongebob is portrayed as being in the right.    Thus, the third problem here is who the real protagonist and antagonist of this episode really is.    Squidward, Spongebob and Patrick: who is the real jerk?    I say it varies in interpretations, given Squidward is still his pre-movie self, and Spongebob and Patrick are dumber than hell, but either way, it falls the outcome of the episode is still the same.    The only saving grace of the episode is that Squidward manages to pierce their veils of idiocy by yelling at the two of them at the top of his lungs. He lets ALL his anger and frustration out. That is the only time within these newer seasons that ANYONE has managed to break through their idiocy.    Savor the moment, people. SAVOR IT.    The final part of the episode, or what I consider the undoing of the episode, is pretty much the reason I thought it was entertaining as a kid. Now, I find it cruel and unusual. Squidward finds an ad for an advanced security system and purchases it with the intention of keeping the two knuckleheads out of his house for good.    After installation, the two materialize into his house with an apology cake that says "Sorry for Bugging You So Much".    This is another making or breaking of the episode, surprisingly. They realize what they did was wrong, and they accepted it as such. However, Squidward is still reasonably upset by the fact the security system did not get rid of them. They even bring in a cake, but the fact is the end up barging in, but still pose no real threats. Had this been handled well, Squidward would have ACCEPTED their apology and admitted he was in the wrong as well for being so overly upset.    However, Status Quo is God dictates he must get punished and get severely angry at them for coming in, and at the security system for not responding to their annoyance. It goes haywire and the system hurts Squidward in the process.    AND then the cake flies on the machine, it goes haywire and . . . makes Squidward's house come to life and destroy Bikini Bottom . . .    This is COMPLETELY unnecessary, and completely over the top. There are so many questions for this and a lot of writing plot holes here. If the security system was on the inside of his house, how did the house grow arms and legs? Why would the system go haywire when cake hits it when drinks and beverages would do far more significant damage than smear the screen with frosting? Why does Squidward seem in the wrong here? And . . . if Mr. Krabs is so cheap, how the hell did Squidward afford that much of a security system?    The point remains; this is completely unnecessary. It only serves to cause more trouble for Squidward, get him kicked out of his own house, have it destroy Bikini Bottom with Patrick and Spongebob inside, and cause the terrible conclusion of this episode. I'm not going to go over how contrived this is or how forced this is, mostly because I think I've already covered it before.    An angry mob - why is it always an angry mob? - forms outside of his house and is placed at fault for causing the damage. Then he gets a court summons to clean up the town every Sunday for the rest of his life. Spongebob and Patrick get it as well, and they take it as naively as possible.
I think Squidward’s look in the final scene summed everything up nicely. He was stuck in purgatory he could never relieve himself from.     Overall, this episode is the basic example of a Squidward Torture Porn, and of modern Spongebob episodes to boot. The lack of consistent writing is jarring, their behavior is off-putting and the whole episode is mean-spirited to Squidward, even if all he wanted to do was relax. There are a few moments that can make or break the episode, but given the overall quality of the episode, it's more weighed down with them than weighed up.
It’s an indicator of things to come in the world of Spongebob and should have set off alarm bells for us.     Good Neighbors is often called one of the worst episodes of Spongebob now, and I can firmly see why.
Although, I can see much worse episodes on the horizon from later seasons that could possibly contend with it.

i just watched the 3rd sb movie and i loved it! i find it funny how the crew can get away with showing spongebob of all characters gambling like actually gambling!!! cause i feel like when it comes to spongebob and kids movies a lot of the higher ups don’t like to show more adult things in movies to avoid controversy and lose money and while gambling isn’t the most adult thing in the world i am still a bit shook they were allow to show a very iconic character gamble
I'm glad you loved the movie!!! I found the gambling scene hilarous but I didn't think of it like that!! You're right, but I feel like I've seen other cartoon characters gamble. Maybe not upfront though. Other cartoons would probably have kids gamble for candy or something.
In the movie they weren't trying to hide anything which makes it funnier when you think about it.
Though spongebob is old enough to gamble xD he's 35 after all. But sometimes you forget that since he acts childish, he's the main character of a children's show, and overall doesn't seem very likely to gamble.
Idk how this slid by the higher ups considering the controversy that spongebob said "no no freakin way" in the 1st movie but hey, at least we got this. Also I think because the movie didn't air in theatres for most of the world is why the gambling scene went unnoticed. Thought I know that wasn't intentional since sponge on the run has been delayed since 2019.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run
“The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run“ marks the death of SpongeBob Squarepants for me.
SpongeBob has just lost his pet snail, Gary. He discovers that Gary is in the possession of King Poseidon because the king needs his snail slime for his facials. SpongeBob and his best friend, Patrick, journey to the Lost City Of Atlantic City to find Gary and bring him back home.
I’m sure everyone knows this by now, but I feel like I should explain this for context. Stephen Hillenburg is the creator of “SpongeBob Squarepants” and he was known to be adamantly against spin-off shows. Tragically, he passed away at the early age of 57 in 2018 due to ALS complications. That’s when the new spin-off show, “Kamp Koral”, was announced. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run” uses the same animation style and even references the new spin-off show to obviously promote it. I wanted to go into this movie and not let that information bias my opinion of the movie, but after watching it, it’s clear that that’s impossible. Let me start off with the only positive of this movie. The animation style was jarring at first but quickly turned me around. It captures the spirit of the original animation while giving it an updated feel. The animation also has some downsides. Some of the characters benefit from the new textures, but some of them look off. SpongeBob looks great, but background characters like Miss Shell look like they haven’t been rendered at all due to their initial character designs simplicity. On the opposite side of that, Sandy looks freakish with her prickly hair texture. The pacing of this film feels like riding shotgun with a person who’s taking their first driver’s lesson. It creeps slowly and then slams the breaks a little too hard repeatedly. The initial scenes are pointless because they don’t help introduce the conflict of the story. Then, the story skips a few beats and then stops to a grinding halt for an unwanted pitstop. This film tries to rehash the plot of the original movie mixed with some elements of the episode “Have You Seen This Snail?”, but butchers both of them. As soon as SpongeBob and Patrick hit the road, they get into an uncharacteristic fight about whether or not this is a solo adventure or not. We get an out-of-place flesh-eating cowboy pirate zombie dance scene (you read that right). I know SpongeBob is known for its random and wacky plot points, but this scene was out there even for SpongeBob’s standards. After that, they get to Poseidon earlier than I thought it would take. They get to this point early to waste time with each character explaining how they met SpongeBob at camp. It’s really shoehorned in and it left a really bad taste in my mouth. The story literally rushes to the climax to set up an ad for the new show. Also, these flashbacks to camp retcon how some of the characters actually met SpongeBob. I know SpongeBob is loose with its continuity most of the time, but this time, it wasn’t to service the story. It was to service an ad-spot. Another thing that pissed me off about this movie was the countless celebrity guest appearances. David Hasselhoff’s scene is iconic because it was random, subtle, and serviced the plot. This movie throws celebrities against the wall hoping one of them would stick, especially with Keanu Reeves. Let me tell you, I like Keanu Reeves, but this movie unwittingly makes him annoying. The third act of the movie is so rushed because the ad for “Kamp Koral” was kept in its entirety for this movie. Because of this, Plankton, the antagonist who set the plot in motion for this film, gets forgotten about. After all of this, I was still thinking about giving this movie two stars for its animation style. Then, the ending of this movie has a ten-second tribute to Stephen Hillenburg. Seeing that made my blood boil. Are you telling me that this is supposed to be in the memory of Stephen Hillenburg? This 90-minute ad for a spin-off show that Stephen Hillenburg would’ve hated is in memory of him? Viacom and Nickelodeon should’ve saved themselves the effort, not make this movie, and just spit on his grave. That would’ve gotten the same point across. Don’t watch this movie. Just looking at it purely as a movie, it’s on par with a subpar episode of the show. Looking at it for what it truly is, it’s an ad whose only existence is justified by executives that only care about the bottom line. At its absolute worst, this movie is representative of the blatant disrespect that Viacom and Nickelodeon have for a down-to-earth marine biologist who struck them gold by doing what he always loved to do. Don’t watch this movie. Don’t watch the spin-off show. Just don’t support this kind of disrespectful garbage.

CBS All Access to rebrand to Paramount+, expand internationally in 2021
Viacom-owned streaming service CBS All Access is becoming Paramount+, the company announced this morning. The name change, which will take place next year, aims to better reflect the expanded content lineup that has joined the service following the Viacom-CBS merger in 2019, including content from brands like BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Smithsonian Channel, TV Land, VH1, Paramount Pictures, and other sports programming. In addition, Paramount+ will expand internationally in 2021, initially to markets like Australia, Latin America and the Nordics.
ViacomCBS’ plans to rebrand the service were previously known. The company earlier this year had told investors a rebranded and expanded service would arrive sometime the summer. It later pushed that timeframe back to 2021, but continued to roll out new content.
ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish had earlier described the company’s plans for the expanded service as one which would allow it to showcase the company’s biggest franchises and deep library, but also one that would leverage the company’s IP for original content, as it has already done now with its multiple “Star Trek” series and “The Good Wife” spin-off “The Good Fight,” for example. The rebranded service would also continue to promote the company’s sports offerings, including its continual airing of NFL games as well as those from other leagues, like the NCAA and PGA.
All this would run on CBS All Access’ existing tech platform, not a new service built from scratch.
Today, ViacomCBS notes that the new service Paramount+ will also feature an expanded array of originals. This includes “The Offer,” a scripted limited series about the making of “The Godfather;” CIA spy drama “Lioness” created by Taylor Sheridan; a reimagined version of MTV’s “Behind the Music,” that will focus on the past 40 years; a true crime docuseries “The Real Criminal Minds,” based on the fictional TV hit; and a revival of BET’s “The Game.”
These shows will join previously announced plans for new kids original series “Kamp Koral,” from Nickelodeon’s “Spongebob Squarepants,” and the service’s plan to be the SVOD home for “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run.”
Paramount+ will also continue to feature existing originals, like “The Good Fight,” “The Twilight Zone,” Tooning Out the News,” “No Activity,” Why Women Kill,” “Interrogation,” “The Thomas John Experience,” “Tell Me a Story,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Star Trek: Picard,” “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” as well as upcoming series “The Stand,” “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” “The Harper House,” “Guilty Party,” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”
The company says the broader lineup from this summer has already impacted the service’s viewership and demographics. Following the addition of the new content, including over 3,500 episodes of TV from across ViacomCBS’ brands, CBS All Access broke its records for total monthly streams in August and saw one of its best-ever months for new subscribers. These users were also measurably younger than the service’s overall average subscriber age, thanks in part to the addition of UEFA and other content.
As CBS All Access nears its 2021 rebrand to Paramount+, it will further expand its content lineup to reach more than 30,000 episodes and movies and continue to develop new originals from brands including BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures and others.
“Paramount is an iconic and storied brand beloved by consumers all over the world, and it is synonymous with quality, integrity and world-class storytelling,” said Bob Bakish, President and CEO, ViacomCBS, in a statement about the changes. “With Paramount+, we’re excited to establish one global streaming brand in the broad-pay segment that will draw on the sheer breadth and depth of the ViacomCBS portfolio to offer an extraordinary collection of content for everyone to enjoy.”
Paramount+, notably, is also the latest to embrace the plus sign (+) suffix as part of its branding, following the launch of newer streaming services like Disney+, Apple TV+, ESPN+, TiVo+, and just yesterday, the kids-focused media catalog, Amazon Kids+. It’s unclear, however, if the name “Paramount” will resonate with prized younger viewers as much as the company hopes, or if this general trend toward adding a “plus” sign is helping these services truly carve out their own space.
ViacomCBS didn’t announce any plans to change pricing when the new service goes live.
In Q2 2020, ViacomCBS said its domestic paid streaming services, including CBS All Access and Showtime, had reached 16.2 million subscribers, up 74% year-over-year. CBS All Access had also broke its own records for paid subscribers, streams and minutes watched in the quarter.

SpongeBob Music Editing Over the Years
Season 1: lots of tracks that were only played once, bunch of Hawaiian/surf guitar tracks. They played mostly APM tracks with the occasional original composition tracks.
Seasons 2-3: some of the iconic tracks like Comic Walk, Toomfoolery, Wooden Bear, Sponge Monger, Earl's Revenge, as well as Wakefield/Carr stings etc. were introduced. A lot of good musical numbers as well.
Seasons 4-5: Some new tracks from the composers, a more balanced amount of APM/original tracks played. Last seasons with really great music editing.
Seasons 6-8: No offense to Nick Carr, but he started to become lazier in music editing here. Unfitting music choices especially in title card sequences. And the music somehow become a little childish. At least there's some decent new tracks.
Seasons 9-present: Carr is slowly getting better but he still need to not overuse same tracks. Season 9 was still late post-movie like, but eventually when post sequel progresses the APM/original tracks become close to being balanced again. And the new tracks are almost as memorable as early seasons tracks.
When did you think Nick Carr had the best music editing in SpongeBob's whole run?
