man ....... my& founders era first generation jinchuriki oc's were literally SOOOOOOO fucking iconic i& CAAAAAAAANT
they rly were iconic plural representation b4 i& even knew i& was a s.ystem. im& so sad i& never got to explore them more but like. i& love them sm. like.
fusa arashi is the first kazekage's bastard daughter by a tribeswoman in the country & grew up on the streets of sunagakure & she made friends with these street dogs that she made her familiars then she had to like. compete with her legitimate siblings to gain her father's affections & she's forced to be the jinchuriki of shukaku against her will to become the country's pride & weapon & she's literally like. 13-14 when all this is happening. a litcheral child. she rly was so iconic. she was called the wild child & then eventually the desert rose. she'd like. never sleep bc shukaku doesnt let her. she'd have all these fancy fuinjutsu & would seal bitches in sandcastles & have all these wack ass wind jutsu strong enough to level small sections of forests ( & a funny scene in my& head is that whenever she sneezes ppl literally get knocked over if they're too close to her lmao ) & have a sense of smell similar to a bloodhound & bc her mother's tribe were expert hunters she'd be insanely good at hunting & tracking people down similar to a sensory nin & she could like absorb things into her skin & she'd have this summoning contract of raccoon dogs & use her dogs from the streets as familiars & her own personal service dogs & use feral taijutsu attacks like a dog would & much like her future successor gaara used her sand as the ultimate defense.
nii tora was a liberator & she was this warrior princess who led her people to safety in the warring era & then allied w/ the senju to take back her lands & now she's the trusted adviser to the raikage & she willingly took on the role of jinchuriki to matatabi. & my girl was going OFF !!!! she was out here w/ the whole claws & everything & spitting out blue fire & just. overall using blue fire techniques that couldn't be put out with water & was one of the fastest kunoichi in the world & was out here being so iconic bc she's litcherally married to ANOTHER jinchuriki the raikage's brother lmaoooo
yuki shiro was out here being a pirate lord & the lastborn son of the first mizukage & a princess from the yuki clan & he was born albino & thus bc of superstition was seen as like. this dark omen by the entire country & this mf..... this mf deadass went up to his father & was like "aiight since y'all fucking HATE ME SO MUCH i'll be your monster" & took the jinchuriki role w/ pride & he was out here killing his siblings in a civil war & raided across the world & he was actually a major key player in the destruction of uzushiogakure aka the reason why kushina, nagato & karin & to an extent naruto himself dont have a country no more. rip btw his partner is another jinchuriki who's nonbinary & they're. super fucking gay together. & like. not only did this mf have ice release but this mf also had coral manipulation techniques & could like. use shell techniques & his skin was TOUGH
terumi akane..... she's a literal bombshell ilhsm. she a baddie that will Never take no for an answer. she was out here being this. like. spy/assassin & was one of the greatest taijutsu practitioners in the world & her era & willingly took the duty of jinchuriki with her adopted brother head on. she was out here with all these insane green fire techniques & could also use lava release but being the jinchuriki of son goku made it that much more crazy powerful & could make magma armor to protect herself & could also use different variants of lava like strong acidic mud to hot molten rocks to quicklime whether corrosive or noncorrosive to vulcanized rubber stuff to melting flames to ashes.... all in HEELS. she really was That Bitch TM
goemon ishimaru is akane's younger adopted brother. he's a hardhead & ngl a fun loving chaotic dumbass but we love him 4 it. he was on a three man team w/ himself, akane & onoki. he was also the physically strongest member of his village. literally the only reason why he took the role of jinchuriki was because his older sister didn't have to feel alone in the world. he had. insanely massive superhuman strength & could use steam techniques from boil release that could give him even more strength that rivals gyuki the 8 tails & he could also use it to burn & melt surroundings & could use steam armor & he also had horns from kokuo if he chose to. so. yeah thats smth lmfao
homatsu mizuto is shiro's enbyfriend. they were a broke ass enby w/ no lands or titles & would always just... wander the docks & watch the ships pass & they were basically shiro's only friend growing up. literally the only reason why they took the place of jinchuriki was because they didn't want shiro to feel alone in the world & the thrill of adventure. literally everybody thought they were insane but shiro liked them so that's all that mattered. they're literally that meme of the stick people killing people brutally & also the other meme of a neurodivergent stickperson jumping off the walls..... yeah. they also helped shiro w/ the destruction of uzushio. they, like utakata, could use bubble techniques & could use acid techniques in both gaseous & liquid forms that could burn through most materials in seconds & could also like develop this mucus that could immobilize its victims & also use poison techniques. we love 2 see it.
tamamushi takiko was actually kakuzu's apprentice. she was sold to a pleasurehouse by broke parents until kakuzu bought her freedom & set her free. the takikage had other plans for her tho... & that involved becoming the jinchuriki of chomei. kakuzu was her only companion. sure he was a grumpy asshat but she didn't mind. but she's. surprisingly still a really sweet person despite everything. she'd have all these insect techniques like developing chitin to be used as lil weapons or surgical threads & develop an exoskeleton as a defense mechanism & be able to use a bifurcated horn when necessary & she could also molt & release pheromones for a variety of different purposes & was immune to diseases & poisons bc of insect immunity & like the bombardier beetle she had this spray technique that while mixing hydrogen peroxide quinone & her own chakra could be fired at enemies that was a scalding 100 degrees celsius & also have the ability to fly w/ these really pretty wings. she was there the day kakuzu tried to assassinate hashirama. she just rly was the sweetest person ever.
otenki b is tora's husband & we love him sm. he was out here being a great father, gladiator, warrior & revolutionary. very few truly knew his real name. he was his brother's right hand man thru & thru & most ppl to this day internally shit themselves even after he's dead. he was out here fighting the uchiha & was just that badass. he took his duty as a jinchuriki w/ pride & was out here doing black lightning techniques & could do all this crazy shit with swords & could do nintaijutsu & could surround himself in black lightning & bc he was gyuki's jinchuriki he could also do insane feats w/ his superhuman strength & also use ink techniques that could be used to create clones or blind enemies.
im& not gonna get into u.zumaki m.ito bc she's. not rly an oc she's a canon character lmfao but...... she was out here w/ chakra chains that could not only pulverize & beat the living shit out of u & would be capable of fighting a bijuu head on but can also bind & nullify ur chakra & the byakugou seal aka the pinnacle of chakra control, slug sage mode that allowed her to use slug senjutsu w/ acid techniques that could melt through rocks, all ur skin, muscle tissues & bones w/ ease & the nine tails chakra mode on top of that...... g-d help everyone.... mom come pick me up im scared lmao
& btw uh. since this is the founders era....... the og nine jinchuriki could use chakra modes willingly & could achieve partial transformation as well as just. full on transformation & merge w/ their tailed beasts so..... rip @ the entire world lmao

August 29: Academy Spock
Well, well, well, what’s this? A new HAICG story. I’m gonna call it a story because it’s (somehow???) 1500 words. Don’t know how that happened lol. Will be up on AO3... sometime idk.
This is for @senseofenterprise who asked for Spock and Sevin in San Francisco, Starfleet Academy era.
*
The cafe down the street from Spock's apartment plays recorded Terran music during the day, and hosts live musical performances in the evening. Spock has been to three such concerts: one by himself, one with a group of second-year Cadets, and one, last weekend, with Cadet Lawrence. This last event he is still turning over, carefully considering, in the back of his mind. Cadet Lawrence is a human, blond and blue-eyed, with an easy, lop-sided smile. He's in the Engineering program, and his favorite topics of conversation are the latest developments in transporter technology, and the history of Federation space travel. Spock has seen history books mixed in among his textbooks, when they study together in the library, which they started doing only because they both enjoy the same room on the third floor. They both like to sit beneath the round window that always lets in a peculiar light, green-tinted as it streams through the leaves of the tree outside.
Another reason they study together is because Spock quite enjoys Cadet Lawrence’s company. Once, three days before the evening together at the cafe, Spock dedicated several hours to teaching Cadet Lawrence how to write simple phrases in Vulcan. His hand was so unsteady, Spock had to help him grip his stylus, to trace out the exact curls and circles of his native script. Only when he was done did he realize how closely they were sitting, and the unfamiliar, soft, human expression that had taken the place of Cadet Lawrence’s usual smile.
None of which is worth thinking about now. He has his Astrophysics reading and his weak, Terran tea, and all he needs is to focus his thoughts on his work again. Somehow, he had found himself staring at a row of maps on the wall across from him, depicting the capital cities of the four original Federation planets. His own home city is second from the left. Cadet Lawrence has never left Earth before—"Never even been on a shuttle before I came to San Francisco," he'd said, grinning, glancing over at Spock like he was expecting him to laugh.
From the chair next to him, a small hand reaches out, and taps at the edge of his PADD. "Father! Time to work!"
Spock raises his eyebrows, a show of amusement for his son, who is staring at him with the most serious of expressions. Sevin is balanced on top of an unsteady pile of pillows, in order to be tall enough to reach the tabletop, where he has arranged his own version of work: his toy spaceship and three large plastic blocks, out of which he has created a complicated, but inscrutable game. He's still holding the spaceship in his other hand.
"I appreciate how you keep me focused, small one," Spock answers, and gently moves his hand out of the way. Then he turns back to his reading again, but his boy won't be deterred.
"When will we go to the park?" Sevin asks. Usually, he enjoys the cafe: all of the people, mostly Starfleet Cadets and officers, chattering in different languages all around them; the music; the interesting maps and other artwork on the walls; and especially the light fixtures, which hang like crystals at intervals along the ceiling, and never cease to amaze and delight him. He is also fond of the baristas, who think he is the most adorable little boy in the galaxy. But they've been here a long afternoon, and Spock has promised his son an evening at the playground after he has finished his reading.
"Soon," he answers, which is close enough to the truth.
"When?"
Spock sighs. Then he leans in close, as if he were sharing a secret, and says quietly, "When I finish this chapter."
"Then you'll tell me about it?"
He nods. "Yes. And you will tell me about what you have been doing."
Just as they always do. Sevin doesn't understand anything that Spock shares of his studies, and Spock doesn't understand most of what Sevin describes of his games, but they enjoy each other's interest. That is enough.
He has managed to read another three pages, enough to bring him back into a proper, focused, studious mindset again, when an unexpected noise rises above the general background hum of conversation and twenty-second century acoustic guitar, and rouses him again. This time, it is his name. "Cadet Spock," someone says, from right in front of him and somewhat above, and he looks up, briefly startled to see Captain Pike standing next to his chair. He's holding a to-go cup of coffee, and looks like he stopped abruptly, as if he too were caught by surprise.
"Captain," Spock answers. "Good afternoon. I did not notice you passing by."
"No, I can see you're busy. I almost didn't notice you, either." His eyes flick briefly to Sevin, then back to Spock again. Spock can feel the tips of his ears turning hot. He bluffed his way into an advanced level course taught by Captain Pike during his second semester at the Academy, unwilling to take the chance that it would not be offered again, and by the end of the year had convinced the Captain to supervise an additional independent study course for him. This would allow him to get Command track credit, despite being in the Science division. Hoping to make Captain one day, Spock? Pike had asked, in a tone that Spock did not know how to read: friendly, and fond, but slightly teasing too.
I merely wish to expand my understanding of Starfleet as much as possible, Sir.
All right. Well, you know First Officers come from every division, not just Command—
It had felt like a promise, some potential inside him that not even he could see, suddenly laid bare, and he'd blushed at that suggestion too. He’d felt a certain pride filling his chest, squaring his shoulders.
Yet for all their work together, he'd never once mentioned his son.
"So, who's this little guy?" Pike asks now, gesturing with his coffee cup to Sevin. Pike is smiling yet another variant of human smile now, one Spock recognizes well: the expression adults always direct toward his child, to show that they are trustworthy. Sevin is staring back at him, wide-eyed and silent.
"This is Sevin," Spock answers, and on a whim, picks the boy up and settles him on his lap. "My son."
Perhaps he has already hypothesized as much, but Pike lets only the slightest surprise show. His eyebrows rise briefly, and his mouth opens, but he turns the expression back into a smile smoothly enough. "Sevin," he repeats. "And how old are you, Sevin?"
"He's two and a half," Spock answers, when the boy himself doesn't speak. He's still watching Pike with steady curiosity, but seems to consider himself no more than an observer to the conversation.
"And shy?" Pike asks.
"Sometimes."
"Mmm. Well, I can't say I blame him for that." He turns his gaze back to Spock, nods once, and adds, "Nice running into you both. I'll see you on Friday?"
"As always, Sir."
Before he leaves, Pike waves goodbye to Sevin, a small wave for a small boy. Then, when he sees Sevin reaching out for his hand, he holds it out, a shade of uncertainty now across his expression that Spock cannot dispel quickly enough. He knows what Sevin wants to do. But he has no time to pull him back or to give any sort of warning a human would understand, before Sevin has placed his palm on Captain Pike's palm.
A strange jolt passes across his features, only a second, there and gone and in its wake, a confused frown, the slightest parting of his lips. Pike jerks his hand back again, and Spock pulls Sevin close against his chest. "I apologize," he says quickly. "He—he is still leaning to control his telepathic abilities."
Pike is staring down at his hand, as if expecting some physical aftermath there on his skin. He looks up at Spock's words, and his frown deepens. "Oh," he answers, faint and slightly dazed. "Is that what that was. I have to say, Spock," and his tone lightens again, perhaps with effort, perhaps with that innate ability humans seem to have, to rebound quickly from the surprise of any new discovery. "I have to say, I've never experienced anything quite like that before."
"I assure you, he was not trying to read your thoughts, only to share—"
"It's all right." Pike smiles again. "That's a bright little boy you have there. I hope I see you both around again." He waves once more, and Spock offers a faint goodbye, and then Captain Pike is disappearing again into the crowd.
Only then does Spock let out a breath he did not realize he was holding. "We have discussed this, small one," he says, and hugs Sevin closer again. "We—"
"Don't use telepathy with humans," Sevin finishes. "I'm sorry, Father. I just wanted—"
"I know. I understand." The temptation is great sometimes for him, too: a shortcut to communication with these strange, emotional, confusing aliens, who remain always a mystery, even as some of what they are is part of him and his son, too. "I understand," he says again, and presses a kiss to the top of Sevin's head.

FE: Three Houses - Mobile Suit Gundam AU (Black Eagles)
Byleth, Claude, Dimitri, Edelgard Here!
If Three Houses was a Gundam show, what would everyone pilot?
Let’s continue that question with the Black Eagles!
---------
A customized Geara Zulu (Guards Type) developed for Hubert in recognition for his services to Edelgard. In order to show that he is the XO of Adrestia’s Royal Guard, it is painted in violet colors and features more elaborate patterns on its chest as well as a blade antenna on its head.
Specs:
Beam Machine Gun
Beam Tomahawk
Shield
Lange Bruno Gun Plus - specialized for space-use, and functions as a long-range beam launcher. It has an extremely high focusing rate, and fires a highly penetrative beam at a very fast speed.
Although she is of Adrestian noble descent, Bernadetta explicitly refuses to use any suit that would garner attention, and instead chose to pilot a smaller suit, which arguably isn’t even a mobile suit.
Ironically, having chosen what other pilots from the Holy Kingdom refer to as the “Mobile Coffin“, and the fact that everyone pilots bipedal suits has drawn enormous amounts of attention. The fact she had piloted it so many times without dying yet only adds more to her reputation.
Bernadetta is also known to only stay in the cockpit and made a personal room out of it, somehow big enough for only two people. How she keeps everything like her bed and knitting supplies organized in combat is up for debate.
She has nicknamed it “The Bernie Ball”.
Specs:
180mm Low-Recoil Cannon
When Caspar became known for hit and run tactics during training and showed he had exceptional skill in it, the engineers following his late Grandfather had a suit developed for Caspar, though it was slightly inferior since a more advanced suit was given to Randolph.
The suit's role as a fast assault unit that was meant to strike quickly, cause massive damage with its varied weapons loadout, and make a fast escape. The Kämpfer was a very focused design, never intended to work outside of its role.
Caspar appreciates the suit’s simplicity, and favors the way it fights greatly compared to the other fighting styles.
The "E" in the MS-18E Kämpfer's model number was an abbreviation for an ancient word "einhauen," which translates to "one strike.”
Specs:
60mm Vulcan Gun - An uncommon feature on an Adrestian MS, the Kämpfer has two Vulcan Guns in the head similar to Holy Kingdom’s Mobile Suits.
Beam Saber
Sturm Faust - A simplified, disposable rocket launcher.
ZUX-197 Jagdgewehr 192mm Shotgun
Chain Mine - a number of disc-shaped mines connected to each other by flexible cable. Each mine had magnetic claws on its underside, allowing it to be attached to objects. It could be thrown out like grenades one by one, laid on the ground or fixed to a building as a mine, or (most destructively) attached to a single enemy and detonated. Caspar prefers the last tactic.
Being a commoner and from an Opera company, she was granted the most basic suit in the Adrestian Empire, the Zaku II.
Basic, but by no means a terrible suit. She doesn’t particularly care about the combat effectiveness of the suit since she doesn’t like to fight and kill, though she dislikes how non-flashy it is. She personalized the cockpit to her liking, including a radio and several photos of her classmates of whom she adores. (And cute boys/girls but they don’t need to know that)
Specs:
ZMP-50D 120mm Machine Gun
H&L-SB25K/280mmA-P Zaku Bazooka
Hand Grenade
The suit is a MS-05B Zaku I reequipped for sniping purposes. Compared to the newer suits developed by the Adrestian Empire, it is dated and completely inferior to it’s most basic cousin, the Zaku II.
However, Linhardt was able to improve the head using his noble status. Over the normal type, this mobile suit has an improved mono-eye sensor and redesigned head for better visibility and durability, perfect for sniping at long range.
While he uses the suit to disarm enemy mobile suits since he hates killing, a major reason why he did not upgrade his suit from a Zaku I was because he was too lazy to put in an order to. He prefers his quiet time while sniping researching crests and crest users, among other things.
Specs:
Beam Sniper Rifle
Leg Knee Pad - The suit’s right leg knee pad is unique in that when the mobile suit kneels down into firing position, the knee pad extends outward so as to stabilize the mobile suit not unlike a monopod on a rifle.
Brigid is an island on the planet Fodlan and is very tropical. With that being the case, the people of Brigid developed their Mobile Suits for water combat, not having to deal with space combat since their cities are mostly underwater.
After a war had its king killed, Petra was sent to the Garreg Mach colony in space as an exchange student as thanks for the Adrestian Empire assisting them in the war.
The Empire reoutfitted the Ace Suit of the Brigid army, the Hygogg, to be usable in space, as well as planetside combat.
Despite seeming awkward to fight in space, Petra manages to make it dance on the battlefield, surprising every enemy with her abilities, their surprise being the last thing they feel.
Specs:
Beam Cannon - The beam cannons in the Hygogg's multi-segmented arms use energy capacitor (E-CAP) technology, giving it greater firepower and a much wider firing arc.
Torpedo Launcher - Four torpedo launchers are mounted in the head. The torpedoes fired can also function as anti-surface or anti-air missiles.
120mm Machine Cannon
Vice Claw - Mounted on the forearms, they are iron nails and can be used as simplified manipulators or as close combat weapons. The arms' joints improves the vice claws' combat capabilities.
The Gelgoog Marine is a late variant of Zeon's final mass-produced mobile suit, the MS-14A Gelgoog. As its name implies, it was developed exclusively for Zeon's marine corps, who carried out a variety of special missions, and were only given to soldiers of high status and renown.
Ferdinand being the son of the Ambassador for the Adrestian Empire, he was gifted the suit at his request, being the spitting image of a noble in the frontlines for his people.
Despite the fact he was able to get a prestigious suit due to nepotism, his skills cannot be questioned when it comes to his performance, and is indeed worthy of the Marine suit.
However, pilots tend to dislike Ferdinand for always saying he is better than Edelgard, which compared to her Sazabi, he was an insect to her.
Specs:
110mm Machine Cannon - One of the features of the Gelgoog Marine are a pair of 110mm machine cannons mounted in the forearms, one cannon per arm.
Beam Saber
MMP-78 Machine Gun
Beam Rifle
Knuckle Shield - The knuckle shield is a modified Zaku II shoulder shield carried on the arm, with the curve of the armor fitting over the mobile suit's hand. One of the modifications is the additions of three spikes placed on the plate that rests in front of the hand. These spikes make the knuckle shield an effective bashing weapon.

Hey, did you hear there’s a new Star Trek show starting September 24? Anticipation is mighty high here at io9—but for everyone who hasn’t been cataloguing every bit of info that CBS has revealed about Star Trek: Discovery on the long road to its debut, we’ve assembled this handy guide to get you up to speed.
Timeline and setting
Discovery, the sixth live-action Star Trek series, was initially announced as taking place in the prime timeline, the same universe as the other TV shows and their related films—but not the recent J.J. Abrams directed and/or produced movies. Since it takes place 10 years prior to the events of The Original Series, it’s more relevant to that show than Enterprise, which took place a century prior. That also means we’ll be seeing some retro-future takes on the classic show’s signature tech flourishes, including a variant on the phaser (though the badges and the flip communicators look fairly familiar). The Starfleet uniforms, however, are closer in look to Enterprise’s blue jumpsuits, rather than the classic colorful costumes of original Trek. (For once, though, away teams will get body armor, an idea that clearly fell out of fashion by the time Captain Kirk and company were boldly going beyond.) As the title implies, most of the action will center on the USS Discovery, though it won’t start there; instead, it seems we’ll first meet the main character when she’s serving aboard the USS Shenzou.
Main characters
Lt. Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green)
Discovery’s protagonist is unique in the Star Trek pantheon for a variety of reasons. One is that—unlike Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, and Archer—Burnham is not (yet) a captain. Another is that she was raised on Vulcan after her birth parents (both human) were killed by Klingons. Her adoptive parents just happen to be Spock’s parents, Sarek and Amanda Grayson, and her unusual upbringing means she’s the first human to have attended both the Vulcan Learning Center and the Vulcan Science Academy. (This is the first we’ve ever heard that Spock had a sister, though one of Discovery’s producers insists there will eventually be an explanation for that.) Based on ominous hints we’ve seen in the trailers, an early episode will explain the incident that causes then-First Officer Burnham to leave the Shenzou, where she’s serving under Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), and end up on the Discovery, to be Number One under Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs).
Sarek (James Frain)
We learned way back in January that Spock’s father was joining the show—as a younger version, quite obviously, of the character we first met on The Original Series. But it wasn’t until July’s San Diego Comic-Con that his specific connection to Burnham became known. In the first Discovery trailer, Sarek appears in a Vulcan flashback, as well as in hologram form to Burnham to counsel her about leadership. Sarek has a long history in Trek, first appearing with a strained relationship with his half-human, Starfleet son and eventually dying on The Next Generation, after sharing a number of intense scenes with Picard.
Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh)
As mentioned above, she’s the top commander on the USS Shenzou. In the trailer, we learn that Burnham and Georgiou have been working together for awhile, and Georgiou has become confident that it’s time for her protégé to get her own command. That is, until something (maybe an alien object?) makes something (maybe very bad?) happen to Georgiou. We aren’t certain of her fate yet, but you might not want to get terribly attached to this particular character.
Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs)
He’s the captain of the Discovery—but he’s not the star of the show, and that’s not the only thing that makes Lorca different from previous Star Trek captains. According to Isaacs, the character is “probably more fucked up” than most Starfleet officers, which means he’s been through some exceptionally crazy shit during his time in space. That’s a quality that could create an interesting dynamic between Lorca and Burnham; in the second trailer, he seems stern when speaking with her: “You helped start a war. Don’t you want to help me end it?”
Lt. Commander Saru (Doug Jones)
The alien science officer aboard the Discovery, Saru’s the guy who delivers the trailer’s most chilling line: “My people were biologically determined for one purpose alone: to sense the coming of death. I sense it coming now.” He’s a Kelpien, a race that’s new to both Starfleet and the Star Trek series overall; their ability to sense death evolved on a home planet where they were hunted as prey. He stands almost seven feet tall on his hooved feet. At SDCC, it was mentioned that Saru and Burnham have a “brother/sister relationship;” Jones has also said that Saru is a character equivalent to the Spock or Data of this series. That’s a telling description, since Trek loves to have a character with an alien point of view and, specifically, one who can comment on human characteristics.
Lt. Stamets (Anthony Rapp)
He’s another science officer aboard Discovery, an astromycologist (translation: this dude knows a lot about space fungus). A far more exciting fact about Lt. Stamets is that he’s Star Trek’s first openly gay character (on TV at least; in the movies, Sulu has a male partner). As it happens, Discovery also has Star Trek’s second openly gay TV character as well, in the form of Lt. Stamets’ partner: ship’s doctor Dr. Hugh Culber (played by Wilson Cruz).
Cadet Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman)
She is an eager young Starfleet cadet assigned to Discovery, specializing in engineering and reporting to Lt. Stamets. After she becomes Burnham’s roommate, they form what Wiseman describes as “an unlikely friendship.”
Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson)
This character—full name: Harcourt Fenton Mudd—is a con man, smuggler, and delightful sleaze who first appeared on The Original Series and has since become a cult favorite, largely thanks to Roger C. Carmel’s over-the-top performance. You can get a quick glimpse of Wilson’s take on Mudd as a younger man (“Are you mad?” “I’m MUDD!”) in the second Discovery trailer.
T’Kuvma (Chris Obi)
He’s a Klingon leader seeking to unite the 24 great Klingon houses—no easy task, especially since (as the second trailer reminds us) “the Klingon Empire has been in disarray for generations.” Klingons are the primary antagonists on Discovery, but the show will portray them as honorable warriors with—as you can see on T’Kuvma here—some really fantastic battle ensembles, not to mention new ships, at least one highly elaborate coffin, subtitles (when they’re speaking Klingon), and a biological reason for those distinctive forehead ridges.
Story and conflict
As mentioned above, Discovery will find the Federation at war with the Klingons. The show will run 15 episodes and we know a teeny bit about the first four installments. Episode one is titled “The Vulcan Hello,” and the description is nearly exactly what the two trailers have already revealed:
While patrolling Federation space, the USS Shenzhou encounters an object of unknown origin, putting First Officer Michael Burnham to her greatest test yet.
Subsequent known episode titles include “Battle at the Binary Stars,” “Context Is for Kings,” and “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry,” though we don’t have plot descriptions for those yet. Based on hints from showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg, however, the season will also focus on how the characters work through their differences together. Based on what the showrunners have said, he war with the Klingons will be in some way a comment on current political events, much like The Original Series reflected then-contemporary Cold War tensions. And Burnham will have to cope with whatever happened on the Shenzou, growing into the kind of leader that Sarek encourages her to be. She may also find herself caught between Vulcan and human cultures, much like her adoptive brother Spock was.
And the rest
The Discovery is a science vessel, which sets it apart from the Enterprise, which, as the flagship, was tasked with all sorts of things; with Voyager, which was designed specifically for long-term exploration; and Deep Space Nine, which was a space station. (And also very different from the Defiant, Deep Space Nine’s ship, which was designed to fight.) According to Memory Alpha, science vessels aren’t meant to be out in space for long periods of time, so maybe Discovery will be docked more often than in the other shows.
The design of the Discovery itself can be described, in the words of io9's Katharine Trendacosta, as being “sort of like Ralph McQuarrie’s original concept art for a new Enterprise and the original show’s ship had a baby. A baby about to go where no one has gone before.”
Composer Jeff Russo’s Discovery theme song calls back to Alexander Courage’s iconic original, while also doing its own melodious thing.
There will be a Mirror Universe episode.
After some initial misinterpretation, it’s actually totally fine to say “God” (as in “For God’s sakes!”) on the show.
There will be Tribbles.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres September 24 on CBS and CBS All Access. The rest of the series runs through November on CBS All Access, before taking a hiatus until January 2018. Each episode will be followed by Talking Trek, a live aftershow available on CBS All Access.
