Sebastian Stan accepts his Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance for the film "A Different Man" on stage during the awards ceremony of the 74th Berlinale International Film Festival
Sebastian's speech for winning The Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance:
"I'm beyond grateful and honored to receive this prestigious acknowledgment... at my first European film festival. And for a little boy from Romania... that is very meaningful to me. So thank you!"
Silver explains that in his younger days, “it never occurred to me just how much he did to keep me safe”, and shares an anecdote from when he was a child and he tried to cook on his own: After falling asleep with the stove burning, Lilia came home to a burnt mess of a soup and a panicking Silver.
Riddle asks if Silver was scolded, and Silver responds that no, his father was just glad he was unharmed, that failure was the mother of all success, it was okay as long as he learned something—and then ate the ruined mess of a meal. Silver says he is “proud to be his son”.
We learn that Lilia’s love of travel used to lead him to taking extended trips, leaving Silver alone in the cabin they shared from when he was as young as ten.
During one of these trips when he was away for two weeks, 10-year-old Silver managed to befriend a bear in his absence.
Lilia continues to fill his role as Silver’s only parent at NRC as well, recommending that he broaden his horizons rather than eat the same mushroom risotto every day (“I haven’t the faintest idea why I should care about any of this”, he says of Silver’s love of the dish).
While their relationship isn’t open at NRC, the other students seem low-key aware that the two are close, with Cater commenting that Lilia loves to spoil Silver, Lilia is “always taking it upon himself to teach Silver something or other” and Kalim saying that he does see them together a lot.
Trey comments that “it feels like most of what he’s teaching him is utter nonsense”. Silver does his best to act in Lilia’s stead during the Phantom Bride event despite Malleus’ assurance that he does not mind being on his own and lists off the requisites of a perfect prince to Epel, as taught to him by Lilia: “Whenever a princess sings, a prince runs to join her in perfect harmony”, “His teeth must be so pearly white they sparkle in the sunlight”, “A prince always shows up riding a white horse”.
Lilia shows no mercy during Beanfest despite their relationship, however, first using Silver as bait and then physically overpowering him into submission.
We hear a little more about their pre-NRC life together during Halloween, where Lilia explains that, as they lived too far away for Silver to be able to trick-or-treat anywhere, he would have Silver knock on their own front door, over and over again, for candy, which he delighted in.
Malleus expresses jealousy at this shared experience of which he had been unaware.
Silver explains in a vignette that “without Malleus and Lilia I wouldn’t be standing here today. I simply want to repay my debt to them”, that he would “train with Sebek, and sometimes Malleus would sneak out and visit us” and that Lilia and Malleus “have been looking out for me for as long as I can remember”, insinuating that Malleus has been a part of Silver’s life for maybe as long as Lilia himself.
Silver says that he “lived in the same cabin with my father all my life” and, besides occasional visits by Sebek and Malleus, his “only companions were the forest creatures. I even studied at home instead of attending school”, insinuating that he was homeschooled by Lilia.
While we do not know exactly how old Silver was when Lilia adopted him (or how Lilia acquired him in the first place), Silver very well may have been an infant: in a vignette, Lilia explains that his “true forte lies in lullabies” and that “the secret is to pepper the performance with random shrieks and shouts”.
When Cater questions this, Lilia says “they snored very peacefully”. Kalim asks if Lilia has siblings who are much younger than himself, and Lilia says “No, not siblings. But I have lived with babies.”
We see both Silver and Sebek running errands to the school store for Lilia throughout different vignettes: Silver for ink and general shopping, and Sebek for pudding.
BERKELEY - The No. 2 California women's gymnastics team was short-handed but used a clutch performance in the floor exercise to rally for a 197.125 - 196.850 win over No. 17 Arizona on Sunday at Haas Pavilion.
The Wildcats held a 147.725 - 147.525 advantage heading into the final rotation but all-around winner eMjae Frazier and Kyen Mayhew each posted scores of 9.95 to lead the Golden Bears' floor performance. Cal finished with a team mark of 49.600 in the event with Jordan Kane (9.925), Andi Li (9.90), Ella Cesario (9.875) and Maddie Williams (9.875) rounding out the individual scoring.
"We absolutely had some stand out performances from eMjae Frazier and Andi Li, among others, but I was most proud of how we handled some adversity and then really had a lights out performance from everyone on floor," said co-head coach Justin Howell. "That was a great test for our team and I'm really proud of how they handled closing out the competition today."
Frazier also captured the beam with a 9.950 and was the meet's all-around winner with a score of 39.575. Williams won on the bars with a 9.975 that matched Arizona's Marlia Hargrove for the best individual score of the day to win the vault.
Cal was competing without Mya Lauzon, who ranks second in the country in four different events (all-around, vault, beam, floor).
"Today was an opportunity to test our depth and try out some new athletes in the lineups," Howell said. "I was incredibly proud of Miki Aderinto, Casey Brown and Jayden Silvers for making their way into some lineup spots and showcasing routines they've been working very hard on."
Brown gave the Bears a 9.85 in the bars and a 9.80 in the vault, while Silvers (vault) and Aderinto (beam) each contributed marks of 9.825.
Next up for the Golden Bears is the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 13 Arkansas and No. 30 Washington.
