This painting is Untitled by Tomma Abts. Tomma Abts makes small-scale, hard-edged abstractions that are the result of a rigorous working method. Using no source material, Abts builds the surfaces slowly, defining line and shape on overlapping layers. While the images often seem on the verge of representation, through Abts’s use of flattened perspective and color combination. She won the Turner Prize in 2006. The contemporary painter was born in 1967 in Germany.

my older brother went to a protest in Denver last night. as the police were leaving, one of them shot him with a pepper pellet that smashed the back of his phone and exploded in his face. they were ~30 feet from each other and it looks like the officer aimed directly at his face

The Arrival Of The King

On Sunday, Christians all over the world remembered the entrance of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem, not on a mighty warhorse but on a young donkey.  This image floods the imaginations of followers of Jesus with images of an unexpected king being celebrated in an unexpected way. However, within a few days, this embrace as King is abandoned and cries of "Hosanna!" are replaced with shouts of "Crucify him!"
As unsettling as the abrupt change in hearts and tones is to read about, we experience similar reactions and changes in our own relationships with Jesus and his church. What begins as sincere commitment and devotion can quickly become disengagement and frustration because we were not given what we thought should have been promised.
The King We Want
One of the most recognizable paintings in American history is of George Washington on horseback with his sword drawn, pointing at his soldiers. He is being saluted at the Battle of Trenton. It is an inspiring painting, it brings to mind thoughts of the courage and resolve of those who fought for independence from an occupying force, it is hard to not feel a bit more patriotic when looking at that painting. When we think of a great leader or a great king (or president), it is easy to have an image of Washington in mind and long for another like him.
The King We Need
What if we don't need another George Washington? What if we need a leader to show us how to win by giving up our power and dying to our own desires? This is the King that we celebrate the entrance of on Palm Sunday, a king not interested in leading a great battle, demanding his rights, or fighting for a throne. The King we celebrate and commit to following on Palm Sunday is unwilling to do things our way and our personal transformation comes only by following him. In a world that demands security and proof before following, Jesus bids us to follow him down his dangerous path. In "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," we read of the reaction that Susan Pevensie has to discovering that the King of Narnia is a lion and our reaction to following Jesus may be very similar and rightfully so:
Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion." "Ooh" said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion"..."Safe?" said Mr. Beaver ..."Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.
Turning from Jesus
Just as the shouts changed between Sunday and Friday during Holy Week, our allegiance to King Jesus can quickly be shifted.  Just like those in Jerusalem wanted a king concerned about their agenda, we also want Jesus to be concerned with ours.
Unfulfilled Promises
One of the most common reasons that I hear from people who have left a church or have lost the passion for following Jesus is basically that "it didn't work." We come to Jesus and follow the version of him that we have created, a Jesus who is passionate about our passions and is ready to fix our problems once we are on his team. We have reduced following Jesus to cleaning up our language and giving the appearance that everything is great and for our efforts, we are owed resolved money problems and a life with fewer problems.
Jesus didn't promise this and following him requires much more than token lip service. Jesus is bringing his Kingdom to Earth, not becoming the king of our kingdoms and he invites us to be citizens of this new Kingdom.
“The Kingdom of Jesus is committed to loving God by caring for people, its citizens feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick and give a voice to the voiceless. It is a kingdom where true joy is found in sacrifice. ”
Followers of Jesus turned on him between Sunday and Friday because the King they hoped for was gaining victory through his own death, he was saving his enemies by allowing them to crush him and they could not accept the paradox. My prayer this Holy Week is that we, as Kingdom citizens, recommit to King Jesus, to King Jesus and to doing things his way.

Revolution Beauty Fast Base Foundation Stick

It’s been a while since I tried anything from Revolution Beauty (I’m a sucker for their eyeshadow palettes!) but I decided to treat myself to their Fast Base Stick Foundation and it’s a must-have for anyone looking for a 5-minute natural makeup look (as long as you don’t have oily skin).

Revolution Beauty Fast Base Stick Foundation
This foundation stick retails for $12CAD and comes in only 8 shades – sadly, not a great selection. The shade I selected is F1; a perfect pale neutral for my fair complexion.
Fantastically easy to blend, Fast Base applies best when buffed in gently with a foundation brush and gives my skin a natural, satin finish.
Coverage wise, it’s on the lighter end of the spectrum, but a couple pats with my Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer covers up any bits that I feel need the extra camouflage.
This stick has a creamy-soft consistency and is totally odourless, so no nasty paint-like smells or floral scents to worry about.
I also appreciate that it doesn’t settle into my fine lines or cake up during the day once I set it with my RCMA No-Color Powder (although if I didn’t set it with powder, I think things would go very differently).
I’ve noticed that Fast Base can sometimes bring out my larger pores, but a good pore filling primer nixes that issue for me.
My skin runs a touch oily as the day progresses, but I don’t find this foundation to add to my natural shine or get overly greasy after being set; quite the opposite – I love the dewy, glowing look I get with it by the day’s end, although I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to use it during the hot, summer months without being a greasy mess after a few hours.
Overall, if you’re looking for a budget friendly, fast applying and natural looking foundation, the Revolution Beauty Fast Base Stick is a good option. I’m currently considering grabbing a darker shade to use as a cream contour.

  This painting was intense and has a deep meaning for me.
Of course you can notice the main big bird as a central character.
But it’s much more, all the entities are circling around it.
Melted with one another like Mayan’ glyphes entertaining mutiple significations.
I interpret it as an ark of souls, its french title means “soul bearer”
In its feathering (just like birds with seeds) it carries new entities …

To paint has always being a challenge, because of the meanings i’ll have to guess once the work is over, but also the details and dedication it involves. This series was started in january 2019, when i discovered the old linocut’ kit my mother used to have in the fifties. It was moving and i knew i had to try it. Although this is a totally unknown territory to me, i found some pleasure and happiness working this medium. My approach is the same here, i start from scratch just like if if was a sculpture, i don’t prepare anything & see / let it appear. The smells and touches were nice and i look to do some more, here are the first ones (description & titles to be added)

I made this drawing as a part of a project called “The Art Of Inclusion”, which was started by the german artist Gee Vero.
In April 2010, when World Autism Day went unnoticed in Germany, Gee conceived of The Inclusion Project. At that time, she was drawing half-faces of people. Her concept was simple. She would send prominent people half-faces to complete along with a letter explaining the project. Her letter states:
“I am inviting well known people to take a step towards inclusion together with me. I am asking them to come and meet me in their own way on my picture which will then become ours! We would be showing in art something that we are still light years away in reality: tolerance, inclusion and acceptance of autistic people are not an illusion. Even two worlds that could not be more different can exist on one common territory, not just next to each other but with one another! The Art of Inclusion grows as it goes.”
  • Anamorphæ & Gratiæ (PICTURES TO BE ADDED)
These are two of my steatite’ sculptures (2018/2019). Anamorphæ was my first one with this kind of stone and it was a pleasant discovery. I enjoyed it even more than wood. Once again, this is the humbling process that pleases me, there is also a magical feel to work of such a raw piece of mineral Nature, knowing the result, future entity, is already inside of it. Waiting for you to discover it, after thousands years of life, making the meeting between the stone and the mind/hands even more moving.
  • A Stride On The Moon (soon … a picture to be added)
This project will be the largest painting i ever made ( to this day ). Its size is approx. 260/218cm.
It represents a new challenge, as i’m always taking a lot of time to complete a painting (months to years, so we can grow in parallel). But although it might ask quite some time, i guess it won’t be “years” before i finish this one, because it feels like the first chapter of more to come.
This painting will tell a story of an out of time meeting between two entities. Each elements echoing the so called trinity of past-present-future of the characters. It may enlighten the interconnections of people, from different origins but in the end never separated. The experiences of people might differ but their lessons and the knowledge to get from them, is the one thing allowing us to realize we are from the same Source, with the same thirst for fulfillment.

The Nintendo Switch has no shortage of limited run physical releases and special editions peppered throughout its catalog. That trend will continue with the announcement of a limited number of physical Switch releases for Nomada Studio’s indie platform-adventure title GRIS. Having just released this past December, GRIS has already garnered a great number of positive reviews. While you can currently pick up a digital copy for PC or from the Switch eShop, this will mark the title’s first physical release. It should be noted that pre-orders have yet to go live, but fear not as we’re only a day away. A pre-order page will be available on Special Reserve Games’ official website starting tomorrow at 12 PM CDT. This page will continue to allow for pre-orders up until July 17, 2019 at just a minute shy of 12 PM CDT. In addition to the various physical editions of the game itself, there will also be two limited edition vinyl soundtrack releases available from iam8bit beginning that same day. Both will include 2 records, but one will open with a gatefold style while the other will feature a quad-fold style. You can find a brief description of each release in the bulleted ext below.

The cult TV show Portlandia pushed Portland, Oregon to hipster fame, but behind the city’s heralded “cool” veneer, lies a white supremacist history. Black people were explicitly forbidden from living in the city when the state entered the union in 1859. According to the 2010 census, the city still identified as 76.1% white resulting in The Atlantic magazine dubbing Portland the “whitest city in America” in a 2016 story that crunched the numbers. Despite that, African-American owned businesses and artistic offerings are flourishing in Portland if you know where to look for them. Here are some suggestions for exploring the unique contributions made by people of color to the city of Portland.
Hip-Hop Wine Tasting at Abbey Creek Vineyard
Bertony Faustin, the owner and winemaker of Abbey Creek Vineyard, in the northwest outskirts of the Portland metropolitan area, said one of the biggest challenges since he first launched his winery was convincing people he is the actual owner. “The wine industry paints a different picture of what someone in my industry is ‘supposed’ to look like,” he said in an interview.
Faustin has created a tasting room that has an experience tourists won’t find at other Oregon based tasting rooms. He’s designed it to be an unintimidating experience. The first thing you encounter is the music, hip-hop, which makes him likely the only hip-hop winery in Oregon. The next thing you’ll notice is his nonchalant way of tasting wine. He focuses less on discussing varietal and terroir and more on having conversations and connecting with guests on a personal level.
“I don’t need your validation on how amazing a winemaker I am,” Faustin said. “In fact, I don’t even truly sell wine. I sell love, magic, and cool shit, and there just happens to be wine available.”

Art or Sneakers with Your Coffee
Bison Coffeehouse is owned by Loretta Guzman, a Portland native and a tribal member of the Shoshone Bannock tribes of Fort Hall, Idaho. Her coffee shop displays artwork exclusively by Native artists from across the United States.
Deadstock Coffee is the brainchild of Ian Williams, a former Nike shoe designer. His sneaker-themed coffee shop pays homage to Portland as the sneaker capital of the world. Williams roasts his own beans and serves up basketball themed signature coffee creations.

At Cloud Forest, Sebastian Cisneros draws inspiration from his childhood in Ecuador in crafting his singular chocolate creations. When possible, he sources his cacao beans from local farms, and imports whole vanilla pods from Ecuador. Visitors to this shop can watch the chocolate-making process while savoring one of Cisneros’ designs or enjoying a coffee, tea, pastry or ice cream available through the business’ partnerships with local food artisans.
Hana’s Authentic New Orleans Snowballs and More is a family owned establishment that serves over 50 in-house made flavors of authentic New Orleans snowballs. These concoctions consist of flavored syrups poured over a ball of shaved ice and served in a paper cone. Some of Hana’s more unusual flavors include Bahama Mama, Tigers Blood, and Wedding Cake.

Either/Or Café was launched when Ro Tam, a first-generation Taiwanese-American, wanted to replicate the community feeling she experienced at her parents’ Chinese restaurant in San Diego. Visitors should sample her craft chai concentrate titled Tanglewood Chai.
Nong’s Khao Man Gai has expanded from a downtown Portland food cart serving khao man ghai, a popular Thai dish made with chicken and rice, to two brick and mortar storefronts.
The Portland Mercado provides affordable retail space for businesses to launch and grow, and has emerged as a hub for Latino culture in Portland. The nine food carts there represent a diversity of Latin cuisine including offerings from Columbia, Cuba Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

Multicultural Festivals

Feast Portland, an annual food festival in its seventh year, aims to represent diverse cultures in their lineup and schedule. This year’s festival held September 13-16, 2018 features a diverse line-up of chefs participating in numerous events throughout the city.
Held annually the last weekend in June, Good in the Hood Music and Food Festival is the largest multicultural festival in the Pacific Northwest. This three-day music festival opens with a community parade and features live music, vendors, and a beer and wine garden along with a kids’ space and a youth venue.

Karen Ward founded Portland Abbey Arts with the mission to foster a diverse and vital community through collaborative arts events and education in north Portland. During this event, three musicians perform rounds of music with a poet performing ‘Spoken Word’ between song rounds. A visual artist depicts their experience of this interweaving of music and poetry, creating a singular collaborative experience shared by the audience and the artists.

After a season of monochrome, I’ve ventured onto vibrant colors and patterns as to joining the rest of you in celebrating summer. This is a bold move for me, and it surprised me how they instantly brighten my interior and complement all the pots of new plants I’ve recently started nurturing to decorate the rest of my apartment.
Marimekko is a brand I’ve been aware of for years now. I first discovered it on a trip to Copenhagen. Not exactly where the brand originated, because the company is actually started by a women- Armi Ratia in Finland.

In 1949, her husband Viljo Ratia founded a small textile company based in Helsinki called Printex. With a vision to create bold patterns and brilliant colors, Armi began gathering young artists to create prints that were one of a kind. Gradually in 1951, Armi Ratia struck out on her own and founded Marimekko. By the 1960s, her story and design had spread across the ocean to America.  The then first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy worn one of her dresses on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1960.
Throughout the decades, Marimekko continues to recruit artists to produce new patterns. At first Armi Ratia did not consider implementing flowers by sticking to formal designs, however in 1964, Maija Isola incorporated flowers in a piece called the “Rebel Flower” (Unikko) that went on to become one of their most well-known patterns.

What I love about Marimekko is the mix of vintage flavor with its modern twist that feels contemporary altogether. What I love more actually is how each of their pieces vary in style and narrative without uniformity. All the patterns of the brand are produced as a large composition, depending how and where the manufacturer cuts the textile each item presents a different pattern and color. Because the lines, circles and even the colors in the overall compositions are slightly off center, they appear as if hand-drawn. This feature is something I haven’t encountered with any other brands.

I was recently in one of their stores in New York, immediately I was drawn to this small plate of yellow and white. It first gave me the impression of a Rothko painting I had seen at MoMA. with its floating geometry that is somehow moody. This sensation almost never happens, as in where a piece of homeware would trigger such a reaction in me. Of course I got the plate and also the Sääpäiväkirja bowl. There is a tea pot from the same collection that gives a better picture of the design’s origin. Rather than an abstract painting, it is actually inspired by the autumnal nature of Finland.
It is said that all these are made with white stoneware and have a long lifespan. They are as practical as they are beautiful- dishwasher, freezer and microwave safe.

Besides the abstract brush works, Marimekko also produces more figuratively narrative designs such as the cushion cover shown here. I have this one as well, to go with the colored one I already have of the same scene. (For names of the shown designs, hover your mouse over image.)
There are many ways to brighten up your summer, Marimekko is my all time favorite. Having these interior accessories fills my apartment with warmth and adds a touch of mystic Finnish folklore. Further more, all these have some kind of a motif linking every piece together allowing you to mix and match.

Back in 1968, Alexi Panshin published a critical study of Robert A. Heinlein entitled Heinlein in Dimension (now available online at the link). His book had a rather odd history – you can find a one-sided account* of its story here – but it was a rather interesting overview of Heinlein’s works to that point. It does have its flaws, but – in its honour – I decided to entitle this essay Heinlein in Reflection.
First, a brief recap. Some months ago, I volunteered to do a Retro Review of Starship Troopers for Amazing Stories. Steve Davidson suggested I review the remaining two books in the three that Heinlein believed encompassed his politics; Stranger in a Strange Land and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Somewhere along the line, this turned into a review of Farnham’s Freehold and To Sail Beyond The Sunset. (Earlier, I also reviewed Podkayne of Mars, at least partly because I read a strongly negative review and felt the urge to reread the source material.) Looking back left me convinced of two things: first, Heinlein was far more diverse than his critics painted him (which became the subject of another essay) and, second, he was never as black as his critics painted him. Heinlein was, in effect, a man who was before his time and after his time, but never truly a man of his time.
Perhaps because of this, Heinlein and his legacy have been savagely attacked. The hoary old chestnuts of ‘racist’ and ‘sexist’ and ‘fascist’ have been trotted out of the stable and aimed at Heinlein, simply because Heinlein was not a man of our time. Some critics have latched on to tiny details – Meade’s lack of presence and characterization in The Rolling Stones, for example – and used it to accuse Heinlein of sexism. Others cherry-pick examples from Heinlein’s earlier works and use them to slam the author, while still others just point and shriek at Heinlein without bothering to apply any critical thought. One may argue – many do – that attacking Heinlein is attacking the roots of science-fiction itself, that the haters are motivated by spite and/or a simple refusal to accept Heinlein’s works on their own terms (The Rolling Stones is a book for young male teens; Starship Troopers is about another young man maturing). Others might point out, in response, that Heinlein lived in a world that, in many ways, was very different to ours. He saw further than most, but he still had his blinkers.
There is, if I can be blunt, an understandable tendency to assume that a writer’s characters are speaking for him, that their impulses and goals match the authors. Yet any author will tell you that that is simply wrong. An author must develop a sense of empathy, even for a fundamentally wrong character; an author must play fair with his characters, particularly the ones he doesn’t like. (Straw characters are rarely amusing, whatever the politics behind them.) Indeed, given how much Heinlein wrote, anyone who assumed that Heinlein agreed with his characters would have to believe that Heinlein suffered from multiple-personality disorder. At base, it is difficult to believe that Heinlein wanted both the worlds of Stranger in a Strange Land and Starship Troopers. They simply don’t go together. As Larry Niven put it:
There is a technical, literary term for those who mistake the opinions and beliefs of characters in a novel for those of the author. The term is ‘idiot’.”
One may think that this is a harsh judgement. And yet – looking back – critics have been happy to blame Heinlein for being what he was, a man who was born in 1907 and lived through a profound period of social and political change that, understandably, may not have sat well with him. Heinlein’s life – 1907-1988 – spanned both world wars, the cold war and all its assorted engagements, the fall of the European empires, the civil rights era and the loss of American innocence … Heinlein saw a lot. His experiences – and those of his country and world – shaped his development, as surely as my experiences shaped mine. Heinlein grew up in a profoundly unsafe world, where – eventually – the threat of nuclear annihilation arose to promise the destruction of everything he held dear; his critics grew to adulthood as the world stabilised – for a while – and the prospect of imminent death and destruction faded into the background. Heinlein never knew the safety (and immense comforts) we used to take for granted – and, in many ways, his harsh view of the universe was more practical than anything put forward today.
Looking at his career in reflection, I think it is possible to say certain things about Heinlein that shine through his books. It is, of course, impossible to say for sure, but … I think it works. (And someone else will call me an idiot. That is the way of the world <grin>.)
Heinlein was, I think, a dichotomy. Just as Stranger in a Strange Land and Starship Troopers represented, for a while, the bibles of both Left and Right, Heinlein himself was a complicated mixture of cold-blooded realist/pragmatist and hot-blooded fantasist. He knew too much about humanity – particularly men – to fully embrace the more rationalist (in the sense that their characters are rational) worldviews of some of his successors, but – at the same time – he wanted people to be better. He was aware – realistically speaking – of how society’s chains held people, particularly women and blacks, in bondage, yet he also preached of worlds where those chains had been left in the past and forgotten.
It sometimes produced odd results. Hazel Stone, of The Rolling Stones, is an engineer, yet she faced considerable resistance from men in a male-dominated field (and eventually retired to raise her son). It isn’t actually clear if she gave up or not, unlike the main character of Delilah and the Space Rigger, who kept going until she had proved herself. It is clear that she advises her granddaughter, eighteen-year-old Meade, not to go into engineering even though she has the talent – a bad piece of advice or a practical one, given that Meade would have to work hard to prove herself? (Notably, Heinlein never suggests that barring women from engineering is a justifiable attitude; an alternate view of the whole situation might suggest that Hazel’s attitude ruffled too many feathers.)
Indeed, Meade is treated as the subject of a somewhat dishonest review of The Rolling Stones, which may as well serve as a good example of attacks on Heinlein himself. At the start, she is told to stay still … which the reviewer condemns … except she’s being painted, so she has to stay still. Later on, the adults wonder if she is ‘husband-high’ – i.e. old enough to get married. Which sounds awfully sexist, except for the minor detail that she might be spending a large chunk of her early twenties on a interplanetary freighter with no eligible men – a potential problem for someone of her age (and someone who has already shown an interest in men).
Odder still, this same dichotomy between realism and fantasy shows up in Farnham’s Freehold, Heinlein’s most controversial work. Farnham himself concedes that Joe – a black man – would make a good husband for his daughter, but notes that – at the same time – he would not advise such a marriage if they’d stayed in the distant past. The problems facing men and women in interracial marriages were stupendous, at the time. Is Farnham a realist or a racist? It can be argued both ways.
Heinlein did, I think, understand men very well. His grasp of male psychology was far better than most of his successors, although his grasp of female psychology was poor. He expected people to try to be better, but – at the same time – he didn’t condemn them for being what they were. Many of his juvenile novels were successful, at least in part, because he understood what his audience actually wanted. He understood the forces that shape the male mindset and suggested ways to push them in useful directions, instead of alternatively pretending that they didn’t exist or trying to crush them. Heinlein would not, I think, have had any time for either MRA or MGTOW activists, but he would have understood them. His male characters were recognisably human, even when their adventures were set in the far future. Heinlein preached the outwards urge, the desire to go on and found a new home. Our current stagnation owes much to the lack of a frontier.
This wasn’t really true of his female characters, although one could argue that they are reflections of their times too. Podkayne is a sweetly manipulative little teenage girl who reads poorly to our eyes, simply because her society doesn’t read like a natural outgrowth of ours. It is a curious combination of post-racial attitudes mingled with old-fashioned sexism, although it is clear that Poddy’s mother was a well-respected engineer in her own right. I think, at base, Heinlein simply wasn’t good at writing women. He could and did scatter references throughout his text to women who did ‘male’ jobs, but he was a great deal weaker when it came to using them as viewpoint characters. In some ways, indeed, he paid them the odd compliment of treating them as men, once they had been freed of society’s chains. Perhaps Heinlein’s greatest failure was not anticipating the effects – positive and negative – of feminism.
But this may be because of his early life. Heinlein grew up in a world that was very different from ours in many ways, even though it had a certain superficial similarity. (Indeed, many of his early works featured a background that was basically ‘USA IN SPACE.’) Because we don’t understand his world – and his assumptions about how it worked – his critics are quick to condemn. They do not see the past as a different country, nor do they try to engage its residents on their own terms. And while there have been many steps forward – many of which Heinlein predicted – there have also been some steps backwards. One of these, I believe, is a failure to grasp that human nature doesn’t change. Or that TANSTAAFL – There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.
This theme became more pronounced throughout the later years of his writing. In Starship Troopers, Heinlein asks what right mankind has to survive. And he’s right. Why do we have a natural right to anything? The universe doesn’t give a damn about us. Heinlein had no illusions about the world. He knew that expansionist powers – Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union – had to be fought. The peace that prevailed in Europe after WW2 was not the result of natural law, but NATO’s willingness to fight (and that peace is now at an end). Superior military force was, in his view, the key to defending freedom.
Panshin argues that Heinlein’s later characters are focused on survival at all costs, while some of his other critics insist that Heinlein thought that women should have children first and only later have a career. This may be true, but … what’s wrong with survival? What is wrong with wanting one’s culture to survive? The universe rarely admits of neat and tidy solutions to anything … sometimes, you just have to grasp the nettle and fight. It’s a harsh viewpoint, in many ways, but it is true. The universe, like I noted above, simply doesn’t care.
There are people who insist that the destruction of the Native American societies was effectively a horrific genocide. They’re right. It was. But no amount of breast-beating will change the simple fact that it happened, or that human history tells us that the strong will always overpower the weak. (All those jokes about how different history would have been if the natives had an immigration policy have a nasty sting in the tail – immigrants did come to America and displace the natives. Why would anyone want to repeat that experience?) I think that Heinlein understood reality in a way many of his successors simply did not.
In his later years, Heinlein loved to shock. He would push forward controversial ideas – cannibalism, incest, etc – forcing his readers to actually think … and then question the foundations of their society. He asked questions that needed to be asked, although many of his answers were weak; he shocked, but then tried to show the consequences and downsides of breaking society’s rules. In doing so, he laid the foundations for much – much – more.
To some extent, as his career developed, Heinlein slowly shifted from writing adventure stories to writing literature. Many of his early works were thrilling stories for young men – often subjected to the editor’s pen – but his later works were more elaborate pieces of literature, more interested in developing their ideas than telling a story. (One of the reasons I didn’t like Starship Troopers as a young man was because it is a philosophical work, rather than an adventure story.) In some ways, it allowed him to get his ideas across, but – in other ways – it weakened them. He was still more effective, as a writer, when he didn’t hammer his ideas home. He trusted his readers. It is a lesson that many more modern writers could stand to learn.
Over the last few decades, there has grown up a belief that figures of the past can be judged by modern-day standards … and then rejected, when they – unsurprisingly – fail to live up to them. George Washington has been attacked for keeping slaves, even though he also saved the American Revolution and ensured that America would neither shatter into dozens of smaller countries nor turn into a dictatorship. Other figures have been subject to the same treatment, even though they were never men of our time. Heinlein, for all his contributions to the field of science-fiction (and a progressiveness that was quite shocking, by the standards of his time), has been blasted for not being progressive enough. He has been quoted out of context, reviewed with neither comprehension nor contextualisation and his supporters have been attacked for daring to support him. Very few people – and Heinlein knew this – are wholly good or evil. Heinlein was neither a angel nor a devil, but a man.
I’d like to finish by paraphrasing a quote from Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell that, I think, fits Heinlein like a glove.
It is the contention of modern critics that everything belonging to Robert Anson Heinlein must be shaken out of modern SF/Fantasy, as one would shake moths and dust out of an old coat. What does they imagine they will have left? If you get rid of Robert Anson Heinlein you will be left holding the empty air.”

I have been painting Taurus the bull constellation lately as part of my series on constellations. This is a subject I enjoy because of the rich history behind it. Taurus is very old people have been looking to the sky and seeing the bull form in this set of stars for a very long time possibly since the prehistoric era. Some scholars believe that the cave paintings at Lascaux which date to the Upper Paleolithic or 15,000 BC depict Taurus. Unfortunately, I can’t find much on this topic outside of the BBC article I just linked in the previous sentence. Most internet sources on the topic just quote that article. But, the idea of star maps predating literature and writing is fascinating.

Taurus was important to the ancients because at the time it was used to mark the Spring Equinox. The Equinox is today referred to as the “first point of Aries” as our view of the suns path has changed over time.   But, that is no longer true as well more on that here. The Vernal or Spring Equinox marks the first day of spring and would have been critical for the planning of agrarian societies like Babylonian. When the sun appeared to be disappearing in the section of the sky that Taurus rested in people of ancient agrarian societies knew spring and planting time would soon arrive. The Vernal Equinox today occurs in March and is when the sun leaves the east and passes through the celestial equator to the west directly as seen from earth twelve hours later. Marking the end of winter and beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Daylight and night are the same length of time on that day and after daylight gradually increases to be longer than the night.

In ancient Mesopotamia, Taurus was referred to as Gugalanna or the Bull of Heaven. It is featured as one of the many monsters Gilgamesh must dispatch in the Epic of Gilgamesh. In a lose or lose situation Gilgamesh mythical king of Uruk is proposition by the Goddess Ishtar (Innana) to be her consort.  Ishtar is a notable bad-ass of mythology as the goddess of war, sex, fertility, and politics.  She is the Queen of Heaven and Earth and she has a temper. Noting that all of her lovers have suffered terrible fates Gilgamesh says no. Then in a not so bright move instead of trying to fake some kind of “it’s not you, it’s me” excuse he goes on to recite how bad she messed up each of her earlier ‘husbands’. She traded one Tammuz to her sister Death (Ereshkigal) to get herself out of the underworld for example. Ishtar insulted and enraged sends the Bull of Heaven Gugalanna to punish his city. He and his best friend Enkidu defeat the bull but there will be consequences for destroying a pet of the Gods.  If you would like to know the whole story Jason of the Myths and Legends podcast does an excellent retelling.
In Greek mythology, Taurus was associated with Zeus who used the guise of the bull to avoid detection by Hera while off on one of his many affairs. Or used the shape of a white bull to seduce Europa.

Taurus contains many interesting features including the two closest open clusters near Earth Pleiades and Hyades. The Hyades contain Aldebaran the brightest star in the constellation that is 40 solar diameters. It is the Pleiades that are thought to be shown near a bull painting in the Hall of Bulls on the cave paintings of Lascaux.  It also includes the Crab Nebula so I attempted to give the below silhouette paintings a nebula like look.
If you live in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter and spring. You can find Taurus by following the path of the sun and looking for Orion. His belt points to Hydes (V-shaped cluster of stars) with Aldebaran at its center and the Pleiades.
