Okay, so I'm going to attempt to get some replies done tonight. Can't promise I'll get a lot done , but .. . .. Also ! With The Order : 1886 cross over in my arsenal, I will soon write up an additional connection to the canon connection between Vampyr and Banishers : Ghosts of New Eden, as well as connecting the two of them to The Order as one big whole. Will also be looking to write up the Verse for Ian's ghost having attached itself to Geoffrey. A lot of new verses are to come in other words. The world in itself is expanding canonly, but so too are the floodgates of headcanons.

I got to thinking.... I may put Johnny on full hiatus for now and make a second side blog.

One that will harbor both Geoffrey McCullum of Vampyr and the rekindling of my old Sir Galahad from The Order : 1886 as muses.

My old Galahad had a strict AU that I abided to, I may keep that in full . Self-loathing werewolf hunter turned werewolf.. by none other than a man he called brother.

For some reason. . I headcanon Carl Eldritch as a Welshman.

Perhaps it's that trickling influence from one mentor to the next -- on when I role played with Sebastien Malory of The Order : 1886 with my Sir Galahad. Nagging at my brain subliminally. 'Course Malory was a more loving, if not a fatherly figure type of mentor. Something Eldritch definitely lacked.

Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, after Adriaan de Weerdt, Luther Reveals the Deception of the Clergy, (this edition 1607 original c. 1570)

Over the Christmas break one of the books I have been reading - In Praise of Ordinary People(eds. M.C. Jacob and C. Secretan, 2013) - contained a great essay about Dirck Coornhert by Dorothee Sturkenboom.  Coornhert was a 16th century Dutch freethinker of the new mercantile class who was disinherited after marrying an older woman.  He was many things in his life - a writer and translator, engraver, playwright, and bureaucrat - and his philosophy was one of broad religious tolerance and the importance of education as both an end in itself and as a way of ensuring a just society.  He advocated the (voluntary) redistribution of wealth above that was required for basic needs and the primacy of the individual study of scripture for religious enlightenment - which put him at odds with both the Catholic and Protestant churches.  He was not a radical democrat in that he distrusted the uneducated mob, but he did his best to use both plays and prints to educate and enlighten his fellow citizens in the hope that they would be able to take their proper place in society.

The reason I am writing about this is the inclusion of this engraving in the essay as it both interesting in its own right and encapsulates Coornhert's ideas brilliantly:

On the left of the image an idealised Martin Luther lifts the cloak of the Pope to reveal his monstrous form (similar to the earlier popular woodcut The Papal Ass) with his body appearing to merge into his throne and menagerie of beasts including scorpion, serpent and dog (wolf?).  Luther is illuminating this horror with a torch bearing the text "the testimony of scripture" for the benefit of another monster, a many headed man identified as Vulgus; the common populace (the many headed hydra that is the mob).  Behind this scene another Vulgus is shying away from a member of the clergy that is being revealed as a cat (a common 16th century trope for the deceptive priest used by both Catholics and Protestants) by Erasmus.  On the far right of the image a peasant is leaning on his spade under the shade of a tree and reading a book to himself.  The text at the bottom Luther Reveals the Deception of the Clergy is written in Latin, Dutch and French. We have therefore, the uncovering of the horrific truth to the ignorant populace by philosophers and theologians. Followed by the individual's self-development as a freethinking subject. In the print Coornhert both praises Luther and avoids aligning himself with his authoritarianism - there is no doubt that the main enemy is the old order, but to set up a new priesthood is not the answer.
