back to queliot brainrotting
I thought I was out of my The Magicians phase, but here I am, back on my bullshit.
Forgot how tragic Quentin and Eliot's love story was ,, literally crying in the club rn. I remember I refused to watch the ending of Season 4 and never watched Season 5. They whole thing ruined my fucking life actually !!!! Quentin deserved better, Queliot deserved better, why the fuck would they set up that love story and then never follow throughhhhhhh whyyyyy
It's genuine so fuckign upsetting how Season 4 ended.
Like I understand that the actor for Quentin wanted to leave the show, but like, they should have just cancelled the entire show then, he's the main character. Wrap up on a good ending for season 4 and then cancel season 5.
I would have accepted a re-cast for Quentin,, maybe,, BUT KILLING HIM OFF WHYYYY?? LETTING THE SUICIDAL CHARACTER BASICALLY KILL THEMSELVES WHYY???
4x13 No Better to Be Safe Than Sorry ruined my fucking life

Does anyone else feel like FCG’s sacrifice in c3e91 is very very similar to Quentin Coldwater’s death? Two sides of the same coin? Idk it seems so emotional in the same way to me does anyone else feel like this?

more magicians ranting, i’m sorry

I want to talk about this moment in 5x03, The Mountain of Ghosts.
I think Alice was truly letting this be a moment where she could forget the past and leave Quentin to rest. She did, after all, say “Rest,” right when she threw the essence into the well. She’s letting the future be a way to forget, not reminisce.
Eliot, however, is the other way around. I think he hurts even more than before in this moment. Based on his expression and the way he’s reaching out, I think he’s contemplating jumping into the well himself so he can join Quentin in the Afterlife. He’s putting the blame for Q’s death on himself, whereas Alice is letting it go, making Eliot’s burden even harder to bear alone.
Just a thought that I needed to share.

look the seven keys storyline is very epic in the show and it’s all very righteous and I’d die for Fen and I’m glad they’ve been called to this quest or whatever but it fully loses the essence of what makes the storyline so, so, good in the books.
King Quentin was bored because Fillory was so good and incredible and productive that it was.. boring. So he threw a tournament. And he fixed up a fancy ship. And he made up a quest to entertain himself but honestly it was about collecting taxes which is not that fascinating but whatever he’s restless and beggars can’t be choosers. And then! Right as things are getting interesting, right as he finally has everything he ever wanted—he accidentally sends himself back to Earth.
The books are about finding perfection, the desire of your hearts, the thing you’ve always yearned for, and then realizing it won’t solve all of your problems. The books are about depression and adulthood and mismanaged expectations.
The show is entertainment.

Sorry but Kabru is so fascinating to me as a character, in a pure mechanical sense, because of what Ryoko Kui does with him. Everything about him is a red herring. He's deliberately introduced as some kind of rival for Laios, a party leader who is hopeless against monsters but absolutely brilliant with people both in and out of combat, and who has good reason to oppose him.
By the end of chapter 31, you might even think Kabru's going to end up as some sort of anti-villain, an antagonist with the best of intentions who nevertheless tries to foil our hero's plans. He wants to defeat the Mad Mage himself, he suspects Laios of being too irresponsible to be trusted with control of the dungeon, and his crew even thinks that Laios's party stole from them (and they're kind of right!). All signs point towards an inevitable showdown.
And then ... none of that happens.
Confrontation over the stolen treasure? Kabru is literally too smart to fall for the classic miscommunication trope and correctly decides it's not worth making a big deal of.
Kabru's deadly PVP skills? Aside from trying to take down Falin, he never fights another human again.
Wanting to be the one who defeats the dungeon? Turns out he was only doing that because he didn't think any other adventurer would have people's best interests at heart, and he's more than willing to play a support role in the whole affair.
Thinking Laios is up to no good? He really did just want to get to know the guy more. He has his misgivings, but ultimately ends up trusting Laios with his life.
Is Kabru going to get some sort of comeuppance for hating monsters and not appreciating their ecosystem? Well no, he has good reasons for hating monsters. He ends up wanting to learn about them through Laios's eyes, but he's never forced into any "Wow, guess I was wrong about them!" revelation.
Hell, even his implied ladykiller ways, which might lead you to think he'll end up being the stock "chivalrous lech" type of character, don't really manifest. He has a lot of opportunities to act flirtatiously around women, but doesn't. He's just a guy whose natural charisma makes him into human catnip.
And that's all hysterical to me, to pull it off. It's a fascinating way to tell a story. To introduce a character explicitly as a rival, potentially even a villain, and instead make them a deuteragonist. It's like a magician making a coin disappear, then slowing down their trick to show you the misdirection. "Did you see what I did there?" they ask with a wink. "The coin was in my other hand the entire time."

I was watching a video about Stranger Things the other day, and it made me really think about the comparison between (SPOILERS FOR S4) Max's near death scene in 4x4 Dear Billy vs Quentin's death scene in 4x13 No Better To Be Safe Than Sorry
Like throughout both Season 4's, the characters show signs of depression. They both kind of offer themselves up as bait/sacrifice for the monster of the season. It's clearly affecting them.
Max's friends, especially Lucas, try to get her to open up and talk about it. When it looks like she might die, she starts literally giving out notes to her friends.
Quentin is clearly in a bad place. And it doesn't seem that anyone is too concerned about him? Everyone just has their own problems while he's kind of drowning.
Both characters have this sense of you don't know if they're doing this brave sacrifice, or they're putting themselves in harm's way on purpose. And both scenes have them trapped in this alternate world where they will definitely die if they don't get out.
If you've seen Stranger Things S4, you know how epic the Running Up That Hill scene is. Where Max is almost giving up, not sure if she can win the fight, but then she starts remembering her friends and all the good times, and suddenly she's fighting back and running for her goddamn life, because she wants to live.
VS
Quentin's death scene....man. We could all talk for days about how it was handled. And how fucking mad I am about it. He deserved better for real. But like...he just does it. "A minor mending." My ass. RUN. God, I'm so sad.
Anyway, 4x13 and Season 5 don't exist.
