Everyday I log onto internet dot com and it asks if I want to hear a great Tom Cruise story and I say yes, and it works out pretty good. Then, it shows me atrocities for the rest of the day. Who can say who's winning or losing in this transaction? I'm not an accountant! (X)

here is the post where the future will see how absolutely UNDERRATED hiroyuki sanada is.
He should've been famous or at least as recognized like 10 or 20 years ago.
This man was in two marvel movies, one was in X Men with Hugh Jackman, and one in Endgame but his character was there to be killed by Hawkeye but still. Go sword fighting!!
He was also in Rush Hour(aka the most badass and iconic movie trilogy ever) with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. Also in a movie w Brad Pitt (Bullet Train), in two movies w Keanu Reeves (47 Ronin, John Wick), ALSO w Tom Cruise (The Last Samurai and if I'm not mistaken there's one more but I forgot), he was also in a movie w Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds(Life).
He deserved all those roles, and he was in so so many big movies, yet he is still so underrated. Man is 60 years old, moving and swinging his sword faster than anyone his age, trust me I'm not even 20 and I'm having back pains just by standing for 30 minutes. A phenomenal actor, very handsome, amazing chemistry with all of the actors he works with, also very sweet and humble. No controversies or dramas.

Spring, 1877. This marks the longest I have stayed in one place since I left the farm at 17. There is so much here that I'll never understand. I have never been a church-going man and what I have seen on the field of battle has led me to question God's purpose. But there is, indeed, something spiritual in this place. And though it may forever be obscure to me, I cannot but be aware of its power.

Lord Toranaga in Shogun (2024)
Historically, following the establishment of the Shogunate, Japan was unified with 300 years of peace during *Edo Period. The same period they were isolated from the world, until the arrival of another "gaijin", Matthew Perry, and his fleet of black warships to force the opening of Japan to trading as America is expanding in the Pacific.
*The movie 47 Ronin takes place during Edo Period.

Matthew Perry in Samurai Marathon (2019)
At the time, the weakened Spanish and Portuguese are withdrawing from Asia as the new powers, Britain and America took control of Asia and the Pacific, triggering Opium Wars. This divides Japan into pro-Shogunate and pro-Imperial factions, causing Boshin War, as each side have different ideas of how to strengthen the country.
*The movie The Last Samurai takes place during this time.
You can see here for the historical timeline of Japan. A Japanese Drama hilariously sums up the Meijin Restoration here.

Ever wondered about the meaning of this scene, just before the final battle?
Tumblr media
Originally, it was meant to be Ujio practicing with a sword. But Hiroyuki Sanada wanted the audiences to see the samurai as more than just warriors.
"In the US, when people think about the samurai, they think they are just warriors. (...) They fight like killing machines, but they also roll pipe leaves, they do tea ceremony, they dance."
So he choreographed a minute and a half of dancing and presented that to the director.
"It was supposed to be a dance to the gods, to myself, before death."
Never underestimate this man's ability to give more depth to any character he touches.
