I sometimes forget how older stories, especially more pulpy ones, could just sometimes... drop weird shit into the stories and then move on
Like, I'm reading The Hour of the Dragon, the one novel-length Conan story, and there's just this one short bit where he (conan) suddenly meets this vampire lady just... right out of nowhere, and he runs away from her and apart from a couple mentions in the next chapter, she never becomes relevant again.
