Y'know Art Spiegelman? The guy who wrote Maus? What if I told you he was indirectly responsible for one of the worst films I've ever seen hands down?
Often some of the best films come from unexpected places. Cult favorite Boondock Saints was never supposed to be made and yet some how a no budget Boston masterpiece captured the hearts and minds of college dorm rooms everywhere. Spaghetti Westerns were low budget castoffs of a genre no longer en vogue, and yet produced hands down some of the best cowboy films we've ever seen. My point is that often movies that come from unexpected sources have that spark that conventional productions don't. The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, on the other hand, may come from an unexpected source, but is an exception to this rule.
It started when Topps, a chewing gum/collector card company created their own twisted parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids out of spite after a licensing agreement went sour. Speigelman was one of the first designers on the project, and he and his team (including James Warhola, nephew of Andy Warhol) put out a series of wacky collector cards depicting what were basically softcore ratfink reimaginings of the Cabbage Patch line that proved to be so popular as to be banned in schools. The cards did so well that just a couple years later Topps produced the live action disaster that was the Garbage Pail Kids Movie.
This is a film completely irredeemable in almost every way. Part of my distaste for it comes from the fact that rather than pull a Gremlins and have these walking aberrations actually cause chaos, the film tries to somehow soften them into something that could deliver a moral to the story. Not that there's much story. The plot is paper thin, to the point that the motivator for the Garbage Pail Kids (lost Garbage Pail Comrades) is hastily wrapped up with an "I guess they're dead!" (???????) and we're whisked away to an equally uninspiring plot point where the Garbage Pail Kids do more stuff we don't care about.
Obviously I don't think we should be demanding prestige writing from the series known for figureheads like Messy Tessie and Greaser Greg, but dear lord not a single character in this film is even narrowly sympathetic. The bully/antagonist force in this sucks, and yet frankly you sort of root for them to end these creeps. The main character (played by Sean Astins brother apparently?) is written as a peeping tom who wholly deserves the sewer dunking he gets, and none of the other characters are much better. The Garbage Pail Kids aren't even fun in their mischief, just awful to look at and listen to. There's a segment where the main love interest (who is grooming Astin's character, by the way) has a block of dialog dedicated to how horrible the Garbage Pail Kids are, and though its certainly cast as an unfeeling villain speech, she's 100% correct in her assessment. Nobody in this movie has positive traits. I would kill Foul Phil with a ball peen hammer.
One of the most jarring parts of this film for me was--in a fairly innocuous scene--the presence of a MACVSOG patch the costumers stuck on Astin's jacket. What sort of secret messaging is there in the Garbage Pail Kids Movie that they're alluding to the CIA's special operations group that was tied to the Gulf of Tonkin incident and US operations in Laos?
Don't watch this film. If I ever see Foul Phil again it's on sight.

“The Garbage Pail Kids Movie” (Rewatch)
-I haven’t seen this film in well over a decade; last time I thought it might just be the worst film in existence (I was curious to see if still true)
-I actually really liked the opening; with the spinning trading cards credits over the trash can heading towards earth in space ala Star Wars 77
-it registers more now how this is very much a 50’s juvenile drama, with the kid just being bullied because that’s spine of the story
-actress Marjory Graue is a total babe in this (as Blythe, the leopard print wearing hench woman)
+it totally makes sense they do close ups of her boobs and thighs in her second scene
-there are hearty chuckles in set design details, such as the toxic waste pipes being labeled as “zoo”, “prime time tv”, “horse farms” “CIA” etc
-then the reality of this film sets in; it is exceedingly boring
-that’s really what knocked me out when I saw it first; I was curious to see a gross out gremlins/ghoulies type film and instead this flavorless mush drags on and on and on and on
-I’d like to be kinder to this film but it’s like eating a food that makes me spit it out; my body rejects it
-my initial screening was at home on tape, it took me three separate viewings to finish it
+in the wonderful New Beverley theatre, with comfy AC and the ability to stop it removed, it passed over like a looming (faintly odorous) ghost shop
-when I bought my ticket, I actually got a garbage pail kids trading card (“Well Done Sheldon”)
-I also had to put a stop to a near fist fight over a guy who cut ahead in line (by accident) of a family of three
-maybe I should have let it ride, witness the first garbage pail scuffle in many a moon
-anywho
-much has been made of films that are “so bad they are good”
-“garbage pail” is not one of those films
-I actually dislike that phrase and think a better one is “so garish that its inventive moxie has to be applauded”
-“Troll 2” is the film that “garbage” wants to be; a genuinely funny, well shot, complete absurd o tron, with preposterous effects, and an engaging child lead.
+that film kept my eyes glued the entire time; I wanted to know what would happen next
-the real sinker of “Garbage” is the character of Doger; he is firmly in the “boring ass white boy” mode the entire film
-I want to be precise; I don’t hold actor Mackenzie Astin at fault. He tries ; director Amateau cuts legs off in miscasting and in his directing
-the spine of this film is Doger wanting to impress unrepentant human toad Tangerine; she’s into fashion so he makes the garbage kids sew clothes for her fashion show
-structurally, the film never makes me believe or understand why Doger likes Tangerine, other than, I infer with great effort, boobs (fair)
-I like films that try different things but nothing about the fashion element(as opposed to a wave of pranks) ever seems more than lukewarm
-allegedly this was going to be a straight up horror film at first but FX maestro/director John Carl Buechler parted ways with the production
-irresponsible speculation; was he bitter and did he sabotage the film with very sub-par FX costumes, this forcing more time on the weak sauce Doger?
-incidentally, the same year as this film, Buchler directed the fantastic, punches way above its weight class, “Cellar Dweller” a lil low budget gem
-am I rocketing away from talking about this film at length because of allergic reaction?
+ I suppose I am
-the idea of the garbage kids interrupting a fashion show, the terrorizing of the beautiful “normies” (as it calls them) would make a great naughty comedy.
-this is not that film. That film would be a fierce roundhouse, this is very mild jab
-director Amateau has a comedy background, yet seems happy to just be working, limping to the finish
-the film def tries to mock the shallow love of beauty in the 80’s; it just never makes it entertaining
-some fucking twisted anarchy, zero respect for story would be lovely
-the plot point of “state home for the ugly” lies there like a dead squirrel
-there was some really good black lemonade soda at the concession stand
-is this really the worst film of all time? Naw
-I was bracing for it to be, but I’m just a different person now,
-as a kid, I wasn’t all that familiar with the monotony of deflated (film) expectations
-now as an adult, I’ve seen more of it, and my reactions can be more coherent
-that’s character development
-so there was a laugh (a desperate need for it) when Doger tells Tangerine “I don’t find you pretty anymore”...but doesn’t that undercut the film poking fun at shallowness?
-I get that the implied cruelty of the 3 stooges possibly turning a dog into a hot dog (the garbage kids go to a movie theatre) ties in with (the idea of) what the film wants to be
+ but it also really underlines the (mis)decisions this film made when it used a short with Shemp, not Curly
-I came not to bury this film, but quickly chuck dirt its way. I’ll gladly forget it within a week, and never more again

Can you believe I've never seen the Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Mac & Me or Nukie? They all look disturbing. Since Milwaukee's known for collecting and destroying all those Nukie copies on VHS, I feel like I should check out that one at least.
The Garbage Pail Kids trading cards were disturbing enough when I was a kid. I deffo remember those, and coming across Jason Basin...

i need need need ur opinion on the boys letterboxd
OKAY YES IVE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS!!!! I THOUGHT ABOUT IT ALL DAY
jj - obviously chud it's his favorite movie and he logs it once a month!! but also frankenhooker, death proof (his fav tarantino movie) and garbage pail kids. but he logs lots of random obscure horror movies I think he swaps garbage pail kids out for the toxic avenger all the time.
john b - indiana jones and the temple of doom, dirty harry, goonies, and blazing saddles. big john gives that he has old vhs tapes of various westerns and 80s movies that john b grew up watching over and over again. I just know there's hella pictures of him dressed up as a cowboy as a kid
pope - lord of the rings fellowship of the ring we know he reads tolkien so I know he loves this one!!!, la haine is his like artsy film of choice but its genuinely really good!! I know he's pretentious about it because we've seen him read kafka lol, weird science is a guilty pleasure watch that's him and jj's movie, princess mononoke is what started his attraction to mean women
rafe - rafe is not a movie watcher! he doesn't see the point! but if he had to pick it would be like..."dude" movies: fight club , scarface, american psycho, 2 fast 2 furious LOL

Sunny podcast is back after hiatus!
So many things were teased in this episode and we heard about some scenes that were never aired or featured on the DVDs!
Featuring...
Charlie on piano
Sun-damaged Glenn back from Hawaii
Complaining about 80s comedies, Three Amigos and Paramount+
Discussions about what works in film comedies from the '70s to early '00s and how sketches function differently
Brief talk of Mac's mommy issues
Episode chat
Premise of the episode came from Glenn watching "Intervention", a popular reality tv show at the time and discussing it in the writers' room, leading to Rob Rosell wondering what the difference between an intervention and a roast was
Gail the Snail was created as a pair with a brother Not Quite Right Robin, who was never introduced, as the Garbage Pail cousins in contrast to Dennis and Dee, the Cabbage Patch kids
Mary Lynn R was cast without an audition because she was a friend and she developed the character of Gail with rcg's notes in an unaired deleted scene shot opposite Frank at Guigino's before the funeral of Uncle Max
Nora Dunn who played Aunt Donna might have been unhappy when she came on set and realized how cheap and low-quality the show was
Marder and Rosell came up with all the insane quotes and concepts like nightcrawlers while writing this episode
Glenn and Charlie couldn't keep it together while filming the scene where Dennis writes Charlie's intervention letter to Frank but these outtakes didn't make it into the bloopers so we don't get to see
RCG were probably responsible for the idea that Dennis and Dee blame Gail the Snail "for making them salt her" (which is not a good feeling she's making them have)
They've previously mentioned the story of the reporter on location in Philly when Frank is doing his beer volcano bit, but in this ep they added that Danny got into an argument with her on live tv
Frank's volcano eruption was a nightmare for wardrobe and continuity because his beer gurgling was unscripted
[Talking about their shitty cameras] "We've destroyed our careers by presenting ourselves as clowns on videotape."
Season 16 teases
Confirmed that The Gang Goes Bowling was directed by Meg and shot in three days + one scene
It was a difficult shoot because of the number of side characters and continuity troubles during bowling, especially block shooting
There's a slow motion sequence in the episode which might have to be degraded to fit in with the rest of the show
Some colour grading/correction will have to be done on the s16 footage, which they usually never do, because they look red
Glenn was away for the first week of editing since he was at SXSW, sick and then on break in Hawaii, but he's back in now with his fresh pair of eyes
Charlie wants to add grain to the picture to dirty it up for the modern tvs and automotion plus
Return of a character from season 1 who fans have been asking about. Implied that the character was potentially dropped and hasn't appeared since season 1. Charlie's sister is the most obvious choice.
Other options include Mac's other gay cousin, any of the kids and teenagers from Abortion or Underage Drinking and Nikki Potnick, though she was mentioned again in season 7

Upcoming projects
Scott Marder and Rob Rosell are coming on for the S5E10 pod!
Glenn Howerton double feature on May 12 with Blackberry and Charlie's film Fool's Paradise.
Charlie only had Glenn in the movie until he did reshoots when he added a lot of Sunny cast. He offered Rob a role but he was busy. David Hornsby is also in it (not seen in the trailer).
IASIP season 16 is coming out in June.
In the meantime, RCG say to watch Succession and Tommy Boy.

A BBC staffer is under fire for a string of antisemitic Facebook posts in which she referred to Jewish people as “Nazi apartheid parasites” and called white people a “virus.”
Dawn Queva, Senior Scheduling Coordinator & Playout Planner at BBC Three, made many of the troubling, since-deleted posts over the last few months, Deadline revealed.
In one rant, Queva – whose profile appeared under the name Dawn Las Quevas-Allen – called Jewish people “Nazi apartheid parasites” and accused them of funding a “holohoax,” the outlet said.
She also made several posts criticizing Israel and Zionism – including one in which she referred to “a bunch of subcontinental European melanin recessive CaucAsian japhetic AshkeNazi who have no None zero zilch blood connection to the land of Palestine or Israel historically.”
Some of Queva’s disturbing posts go back nearly a decade: In 2014, she referred to Israel as “Israhell,” the Times of Israel said.
“The Zionist genocidal land squatting so called Jew’ irrespective of the fact that The UKKK and Amerikkka gave away land they had no god given right to a people who have no god given right to,” Queva added in another post, according to screenshots shared by Deadline.
Queva – who previously worked for A+E Networks, UKTV, and Disney, according to Deadline – also repeatedly hit out at white people, whom she referred to as a “virus” and a “mutant invader species,” the Telegraph wrote.
Several of her posts refer to Great Britain as the “UKKK,” in reference to the Ku Klux Klan.
In another update, she wrote that white people were a “barbaric bloodthirsty rapacious murderous genocidal thieving parasitical deviant breed”.
Several of her posts were removed or restricted by Facebook – including an early January incident in which her activity was restricted for bullying and hate speech, the Times of Israel said.
Queva then slammed the action as “anti black klu klux klan white/Zionist restrictions,” the outlet reported.
Queva appeared to respond to the reports about her previous posts on Friday, when she updated her Facebook wall with a video from the 1987 movie “The Garbage Pail Kids” alongside a caption that read “only those who live a lie hate the truth!”
She also commented below to add an infographic supposedly listing Jewish slave ship owners, as well as the infamous photo of Gordon, an escaped slave with a heinously scarred back due to years of abuse.
Queva’s disturbing posts are believed to have been circulated in BBC WhatsApp groups that formed in the wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
The BBC was under scrutiny for its coverage of the attack and subsequent war – and Director General Time Davie has held “listening meetings’ in order to address the perceived bias in its work, Deadline explained.
There have also been recent reports that 22 employees at the national broadcaster have filed complaints about antisemitism in the workplace, the Telegraph added.
“We don’t comment on individual members of staff and we have well-established and robust processes in place to handle such issues, we do not tolerate anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, or any form of abuse and we take any such allegations seriously and take appropriate disciplinary action wherever necessary,” a BBC spokesperson told The Post.
