Love For Love's Sake: unorganized musings on an utterly brilliant show
TW: suicide, suicide attempts and ideation among LGBTQ+ youth
I love that @lurkingshan clocked early on, before my heated two-day binge of Love For Love's Sake, that I would NOT be able to write meta on this show right after I watched it. It's been five days, and all I have are just loose mental strings. Everyone has had such amazing input and theories and thoughts into this incredible show. What I said to @bengiyo while I was watching it was: I'm not entirely sure I'm following everything, but this show is still hitting every high point of my dopamine cycle, which means it's GOOD, and maybe making sense, somehow.
In any case, I don't think I can write meta on this show, in part because I don't know if there are any concrete conclusions I can come to about this show -- which I think is an inherent part of its brilliance. I'm just in awe that we, as BL fans, got this show in the genre we love, complete with stellar acting, gorgeous cinematography, phenomenal writing, all of it. (I'm back a lot on iQIYI right now, ready for my KinnPorsche OGMMTVC rewatch, and I'm noticing that LFLS is just eating by way of numbers. Fucking WELL DESERVED.)
All I want to do is just share some instinctual feelings about where my mind was landing a couple days after I finished watching LFLS. This is the scene I've been thinking about the most right now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't have a theory as to the "reality" of the ending of the show -- if Myungha is alive in "reality," is alive in an alternate universe, is reincarnated, or if what's shown at the end of the series is a kind of heaven. I love that there's no real way we can interpret that.
What I love about this scene that I've screencapped -- and thinking about the elusive and inconclusive meanings of the ending -- is that, truly, theories about fate and destiny ARE indeed theories. Myungha's grandmother believes one thing, and Myungha believes something else. Sunbae is able to play around with.... something, with time, with fate, with our dependence on technology, something, to make something happen to Myungha that gives him a happy ending with Yeowoon somewhere, sometime, in some wrinkle of time.
Going back for a second (I told you these thoughts were unorganized), something that hit me deeply about this show were the great number of themes it touched upon. This show touched upon:
Suicide Homophobia Bullying Self-acceptance Self-love Familial abandonment Familial abuse Substance abuse Intergenerational trauma Elder hierarchy and respect (both in families and in society) Pre-destination Christianity (stay with me for a sec) Buddhism (same)
and probably many more that I'm missing.
I couldn't help but think of Lee Sun-Kyun's recent suicide in South Korea -- even though this show was likely produced well before that incident. Nonetheless, it had me thinking about what suicide means in South Korea, considering the ever-growing presence of Christianity in that country, with 23% of South Koreans identifying as some kind of Christian. The show also had me thinking in general of sins, and of fate, in Christianity.
Just thinking out loud. Korea produces fewer BLs than we'd expect from that national entertainment powerhouse. Efforts to cancel Seoul Pride last year were made in earnest by pro-Christian forces -- but Pride won out.
As same-sex orientation so often is, suicide is also discouraged in Christian circles. We can see, literally, how homosexuality is discouraged in South Korea vis à vis Pride. I'll assume the same for suicide in South Korea, despite the many celebrities in the recent past that have met that fate publicly.
What does South Korea feel about the suicides of young people who might be queer? The percentages of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among South Korean LGBTQ+ youth are high.
We can see and feel the palpable message from LFLS that self-love, despite how oneself, and society, might feel about an individual's sexual orientation, is well worth fighting for and celebrating. But Myungha, in some reality, is still dead. And death will be his eventual fate anyway, as will be the fate for all of us.
If Myungha found self-love, AND love through Yeowoon, and found a happy ending in happiness, somewhere, somehow, then -- any Christian judgements about same-sex orientations and suicide are moot, regarding Myungha's fate.
But Myungha also reveals, vis à vis his grandmother, the Buddhist spin on fate. He mentions that she believes in reincarnation. He mentions that she believes in doing good in this life, so as to have a happy life after reincarnation.
And he refutes that. He says -- no. Predestination of any kind is not right. I believe that one can change their lives NOW, in the present, for a happier fate and future, NOW. Otherwise, why even bother trying?
And Sunbae hears that, and constructs a world in which Myungha COULD find a path to a happier ending, simply by working on finding love for himself and unto himself -- in part, though a partner that Myungha relates to deeply at the start of the series. (That Yeowoon might very well be the EMBODIMENT of self-love that Myungha discovers -- yes, that may also be "true" of the show's ending. Whew.)
You know what I love about this show? I love that this show just absolutely CHEWED UP those predestination theories that we get from our generations past, from the spiritual practices that we may have grown up with -- from the indirect, unspoken, unconscious ASSUMPTIONS we may have about life and death. This show iterated that being either in "the" or "a" now, a present, and being willing to change oneself (which I've often written about as being THE hardest thing you can you in your life) can have great, long-lasting -- even eternal benefits and consequences.
I love that this show says: you don't have to rely on all the structures and expectations that lead one to behave the way that they do. We might always expect to be a group of schoolboys who'll bully another for being gay. But -- did we expect one of those bullies to BE gay? The show said, we can also very much turn that on its head, even though it might cost someone some bruises.
Within the absolute truth that all humans will die one day -- what other absolute truths do we have? Man. I need a vacation, some..... stuff, you know what I mean, I need TIME to contemplate that.
This show said, no absolute truths today. Everything is up for grabs by way of how we'll love and accept people, and this show examined ALL THE WAYS, good AND bad, that people are loved and accepted, from total rejection by a parent, to unconditional love from a partner, with a slipper-bearing and loving grandma in-between.
It's been... what, five days since I finished this show, and I CANNOT stop thinking about it. It's just brilliant. These thoughts were messy, but it's meant to be, because I just -- this show, I just can't with how brilliant this show was about all of the inconclusiveness of it that still told such an amazing story.

Unashamedly riffing off of The Green Knight because the cinematography is fucking stellar af and this is a great way to study it. Can't wait for the day Shotdeck drops a whole lotta Andor even though I already get those shots elsewhere.
I am reallyreallyreally hoping this entire set of doodles, this chapter, and the next chapter do what I hope they do. Sat on the end of this first arc for YEARS and the payoff be better damn worth it.

a little film review: Babylon
2.5/5
Okay, let me first start with some praise. Margot Robbie gives an excellent performance. I definitely could see the influence of silent film actress Clara Bow, among other troubled silent film stars. The way she was able to go from sobbing to channeling that sadness to being the “life of the party” within a second was honestly maybe the only highlight of the movie. The set design and cinematography was fantastic though, so props to those departments. I also want to praise Jovan Adepo as Sidney Palmer. The most poignant scene of the entire film, when he is presented with coal in order to make himself look darker in order to make the band seem not mixed, really showcased how truly fucked up Hollywood can be in general and no matter the “progress” they are saying they are making, there is always things behind the scenes that prove they very much are not progressing. I think that was true in 1927 and it’s still true today. The way Adepo so subtly gives in while also making a life changing decision after the scene, and the way he plays the trumpet with the coal on his face and the emotions, truly so good. They should have made him the main character and tracked his storyline the whole time instead of what they went with.
Now the criticism. Which will be heavy haha. The movie was waaaayyy too long. The ending, terrible. Right when I was like, “okay it’s about to end” it dragged on another 20 minutes! If I’m waiting for a movie to finally be over, it’s not a good one. I very rarely feel that way about longer films, but because the story was so all over the place and sometimes way too fantastical, it made for a drag of a film. Speaking of fantasy, it really irked me that the characters in the film were all fake and maybe partially based off of some people and then having one or two “real people” really would just take me out of the film. I would have much rather it go all in with a fantasy land of 1920s Hollywood or do an actual ‘biopic’ of 1920s Hollywood. There are so many crazy things that happened and went on during that time period, that the fact they negated a lot of those stories to tell the story they told in the film was disappointing. You have the Fatty Arbuckle scandal, the William Desmond Taylor murder, the weird overdose of Olive Thomas, the addictions of Wallace Reid etc. so many other storylines could have had the opportunity to be told yet Damien Chazelle decided to try and reimagine that time period with some true aspects, a lot of false aspects and overall, in my opinion, it fell flat and felt like it would never end. No fantastic performance was going to save the overall material unfortunately. But I will say besides the stellar performance by Margot Robbie, everyone did solid and honestly that was the only thing keeping me in the theater. The rest of it was pretty shit. So I say wait for it to come out on streaming if only for Robbie’s performance and the way it was shot, but if you’re looking for a portrait of 1920s Hollywood, just go watch a silent film instead.

hey @mangsney, no worries, I understand why you’re asking!  I really enjoyed Obi-wan, there’s some scenes that still stay with me, esp the sound design when Obi-wan and Reva have their convo while he’s ‘captured’. The handling of Vader was stellar and their final confrontation felt really well earned.
my issue is with how less integral scenes were sort of left unfinished writing-wise. Like they aren’t bad so much as...lazy. More of a sketch than a finished drawing. Any time a show leaves the viewer asking ‘why was I shown this’ or ‘how did they get away with that’, and the only real answer is ‘to fill time’ or ‘to get from point A to point B’, its not good writing. Its only really a problem because of the quality of Filoni’s and Favreau's other work within the same universe is heads and shoulders above what we got in Obi-wan. Nevermind Andor, Obi-wan doesn’t meet Book of Boba’s competency in writing, simply in establishing expectation and paying it off. And Book of Boba is far more streamlined and fat trimmed than any season of Mando. It only did what it told us it would do. It was set up and pay off, point by point, and I commend it for that, but in other series, we were allowed to just. Hang with the characters in a way I feel like they didn’t have time for in Boba. They had Mando season 2.5 to slip in. They had a limit on episodes and a very strict shooting schedule. They had every other project built off Mando’s wings to push through scripting, shooting and editing.
I’d defend both Obi and Boba for what they do accomplish and I seriously enjoyed both of them. I have to be honest tho, it was a disappointment knowing they could have been fuller, stronger and allowed us more time with these characters but were limited by production and ultimately corporate greed.  If you don’t see the faults I do, good. Obi-wan deserves all the love in the world, REVA deserves all the love in the gALAXY.
Andor is fantastic, but its also hella depressing and is too human centric. they really feared losing prestige points by having any non-human central characters and it shows. And I will never not be livid about that. It’s antithetical to Star Wars imo and its upsetting that I rarely see it mentioned. That isn’t to say don’t watch it. It is well worth the watch. I’m just petty and want to bitch about how everyone’s shiney new favorite isn’t actually perfect. It’s just as calculated as every other Star Wars production, bc it has to be. Because while these are wonderful works of art, they are also reliant on their marketability within late stage capitalism, and capitalism is a fickle fucking mistress. Andor is inspiring, its cast is diverse and its performances are unmatched. It’s openly and unapologetic about its queer characters. Its cinematography is some of the best in all of Star Wars canon. It takes the time to linger and really let you invest in every character you meet. Its just also supposed to be star wars so give me a fucking alien to love for more than a single scene, Fucking PLEASE.

Took my sister to see DWD yesterday and she fucking loved it! When the twist happened she kept turning to me and saying "fucking brilliant"! She thought Florence was amazing and the cinematography, she thought Harry was okay in it! Not stellar but okay! And she thought that some parts needed more development to show more of the reason of why everything happened! Overall, as someone who had seen NOTHING from spoilers or controversies etc (only super vague stuff), she didn't see any of the twists happening! And she enjoyed herself a lot! And we were having such interesting conversation! It was also her first movie post pandemic!!!!!!!!!
#second time was much more enjoyable than the first#and you notice many many many more elements and patterns and full circle moments#also the dancer moments were so creepy and jump scare-y omfg i dunno how i handled them the first time#and i noticed at the beginning when jack and alice are driving in the desert they're doing circles with their car and it's the exact same#circle the victory project looks like!!!!!!!! and also how the perfect illusion of the perfect couple begins to chip away after the first#time alice exists the simulation and he yells at her and she's like 'youre worried about a demotion?' and then he very naturally gaslights#her! AND when he tells her all happy and dreamy like that he wants to have kids when they're ~agreement~ was to not have any#admittedly Harry's best scene (imo) is when the reveal happens and he's yelling at her and especially when he says 'you get to stay here#amd you're happy! you're happy' the way he delivers that scene is very haunting! the way he thinks that's the best thing for her or that#she shouldn't want more out of her life! and also i teared up when alice yelled 'it was MY life! MY LIFE! And you don't get to take that#away from me'!!!!!!!! and I can't stop thinking about how much of a good fit harry was to the role because majority of abusive men are not#what society considers less attractive! they're the ones with the suits and the good names and the 'good' high paying jobs those who come#in neat little boxes and are exactly society's standard for men! and bunny's character is also very genius because she's someone pushed so#far by grief and she's the woman who along with Shelley uphold the system. and it's so fitting that she's bffs with alice because alice is#the one who's willing to do things to 'blow up a system that serves her' and bunny is dying to uphold it because without it she's nothing!#and I keep thinking what if the promotion means that the men selected are more involved in the building and expansion of victory/the#simulation?Also what if the ring is actually Frank's way of controlling them IN the simulation? And that's why jack seems like a puppet#while Frank is yelling 'do you want to see him dance?'!!!!!!!!!!!! so many thoughts!!! i want to watch it again!!!!!!!!!!#dwd spoilers#don't worry darling

ALRIGHT HOTD FINALE AND OMGGG here are my tHouGHtS and spoilers ahead ofcc
❗️❗️❗️❗️
• I mean it wasn't as shocking for me coz I've read the book so I obviously knew what was about to go down but with that being said
• Emma D'Arcy I love you so much . Their acting as Rhaneyra was outstanding, life changing , freaking amazing and I am in absolute awe. The shot of Rhaneyra at the end as Daemon informs her about Luce's demise , and she turns around and just by looking at her you sense her pain and rage and how the real dotd is gonna start and shit will go down was goosebump inducing . I mean I'm by no means an expert in acting but Holy SHRIMP THAT WAS POWERFUL . WHAT A STELLAR PERFORMANCE , ONE FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS ! AND IF THEY DONT GET AN EMMY I WILL GO APESHIT BECUASE WHAT THE FUCK?
• Rhaneyra's coronation was by far my favourite scene in the episode along with Daemon singing to vermithor , absolutely beautiful and you bet I'm learning that song
• speaking of lucerys
• MY BOY
• I was dreading this moment ever since episode one and it was just all around heartbreaking , despite knowing what will happen the scene still made me sit at the edge of my bed and tense up . We will miss you king 😔
• Otto hightower , this bitch in itself is a warning
• fuck him that is all I can say
• also the fact that Alicent kept that page Rhaneyra tore and kept it safe , it even has creases in it , meaning that she opened it multiple times whenever she missed her best friend ... *screams* they were both victims of the patriarchal society they were born to and this is something I will always stand by .
• JACAERYS MY BELOVED , He was all around the best this episode , the way he confronted Daemon and stood up for his mother was so pure, and it makes me so sad thinking about what will happen to him in the end . He was too good for the world of ice and fire .
• speaking of ice and fire , I'm really excited to see my beloved the Starks and winterfell next season , the pact of ice and fire and the theory of dragon eggs being in the crypts always intrigued me
• Daemon .. I am honestly surprised most of yall were shocked , like literally everyone of the characters in hotd and in asoiaf are unhinged and need counselling. If you are looking for right vs wrong you've come to the wrong place 😭😭😭😭 wait till you read f&b 😭😭😭
• the black council scenes in which Rhaneyra constantly reminds everyone that she has a duty to preserve the realm and keep it safe from bloodshed and that her ambition isn't the only thing that matters further proves to me that she would have been an great ruler
• Even Rhaenys admits to Corlys that Rhaneyra is holding it all together and keeping the realm from dissolving into madness and destruction .
• And I think the show was good when it came to Rhaenys portrayal as well , she too was a capable intelligent woman who was robbed of her deserving position.
• overall , there are some issues I do have , but regardless of that I am so excited for season 2 , this really did heal the wounds that I have from got season 8 and hotd really brought back the once epic Game of Thrones calibre of acting , dialouge and plot . Squeezing 20+ years of storyline into 10 episodes is hard for any production I think, and they executed it so smoothly .
• the costumes and cinematography and overall attention to detail was such a delight to see , so refreshing and it really showed you how much thought and effort they put into this spinoff, unlike the shitstorm that game of thrones became from season 5 onwards . Asoiaf franchise was practically dead with the end of game of thrones , I remember how everyone pretend the finale didn't even happen and people on tumblr removed game of thrones hashtags from their profiles , twitter was fuming and the reddit page for asoiaf turned into a fan page for lotr😭😭😭😭 like everyone was thaT fed upp
• hotd Sundays are over now and the fact that I have go wait for two years ( I think) to see my psychotic war criminals again is killing me 😭
• PHEW WHAT A SEASON . ILL BE WAITING FOR THE NEXT ONE 🤌😌
SORRY FOR ANY TYPOS BESTIES

i just realized i don’t think i’ve given my proper two cents about the csm anime yet.... and it’s been a while since s1 ended oop. okay well overall? i do think it was pretty fucking good but the main main gripe i had is i think it was just too fast. like obviously one advantage manga has is it really allows you to sit in the moment and csm excels at that with the paneling especially of just a character’s expression changing ever so slightly and with the anime it just. okay himeno’s dead lets move on super duper fast. it just ! it doesn’t let you really process before the next big action sequence comes. but i do think the animation, voice acting and cinematography was stellar!!

My Best of 2022: Non-2022 Films
My Best of 2022 is a series of annual lists in which I pick the best of the best from 2022, all leading up to my official picks for My Top 10 Films of 2022.
Only a handful of these even belong on any sort of ‘best of’ list. But, as I only saw somewhere like 20 first-time non-2022 films, here we are. Oh well...
1. Drive My Car (Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, 2021)
A staggering cinematic achievement. How not one second of this three-hour film is anything less than enrapturing is a true testament to the power of humanity in film. All aspects work together beautifully, here, to bring a refreshing, heartfelt, emotionally cathartic story of mourning and the connection between life and art. The source material lays a rock-solid foundation upon which Ryûsuke Hamaguchi & Co. build a quietly compelling piece of cinema. With the Academy’s love for this, I really see no logical reason how Hidetoshi Nishijima wasn’t nominated in the Lead Actor category over Javier Bardem, he was magnificent.
2. The Raid: Redemption (Gareth Evans, 2011)
Oh… damn… badass action flick is badass. How the hell did I not see this sooner?!?
3. The Cincinnati Kid (Norman Jewison, 1965)
I’ve long loved Rounders, so its really strange it took me this long to see this one. McQueen is solid, but Robinson steals the show. Jewison’s direction sets a fantastic pace. And then there’s Ann-Margaret… yikes!
4. Cyrano (Joe Wright, 2021)
That “Wherever I Fall” sequence, though... That scene tore my heart right out of my chest. Wow.
The rest of this is quite phenomenal, as well. Dinklage’s performance was stellar, and despite his singing voice not being the strongest (especially when paired against Haley Bennett’s), his numbers made for emotionally overwhelming pieces. On the technical side, this was an all-around feast, boasting production design, costumes, cinematography - not to mention the abundance of music not singled out - that were nothing short of beautiful.
5. Kodachrome (Mark Raso, 2018)
Holy shit… Elizabeth Olsen is so effortlessly gorgeous, here. Damn. The beginning features a giant, don’t-fucking-do-it move on Sudeikis’ part when he gives the venue security guard attitude for telling him he needs to have his pass on, and that seriously annoyed me, so the fact that I ended up liking his character at all throughout the rest of the film is some solid character work on his part. Ed Harris was unsurprisingly solid. Overall not the best, most original or insightful film of its kind, but the cast is really good and living in both the live music world and the photography world as I do, there was a bunch here for me to like. Especially Elizabeth Olsen, though. Seriously… Damn.
6. The Shop Around the Corner (Ernst Lubitsch, 1940)
James Stewart really is one of my all-time favorite actors. He’s just always so damn good. I also love me some Lubitsch, yet for some reason I have so many blind spots with him. Anyway, I know we live in completely different times, but even looking through the scope of the time, that ending seemed a bit forced. Still a delightful film overall, but she must’ve been really desperate to let the shit he pulled go.
7. Timecrimes (Nacho Vigalondo, 2008)
A cool, little contained time travel thriller. I’d almost rented this dozens of times back when I worked at Blockbuster Video, but never pulled the trigger. It’s weird and twisty and surely ridden in plot-holes, but damn was it an enjoyable ride.
8. Red Rocket (Sean Baker, 2021)
I was surprised by how much I actually ended up liking this despite totally despising our lead character. There’s a white-trash charm to it, I guess? Or, at the very least, a clear sense of authenticity that pulls you into the film effectively. I’m still not a fan of Baker’s tendency to use non-professional actors, though. It’s distracting in the wrong way.
9. Parallel Mothers (Pedro Almodóvar, 2021)
I don’t really have a lot to say about this one. Cruz was magnificent, and more than earned that Oscar nod, but other than that I had trouble getting emotionally invested, and was therefore left cold by the end.
10. The King’s Man (Matthew Vaughn, 2021)
It has its moments, and Ralph Fiennes is awesome, but mostly it left me wanting for more. The first of these movies was so wonderfully over-the-top that the few scenes that come near that level, here, just don’t quite satisfy.
Enjoy!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.
Next Up: Assorted (Animated Feature, Foreign Film, Editing, Screenplay, Etc.)

Eh eh thank you darling @carronyaflowers for the tag!
Rules: Post 10 of your fave movies and tag 10 people.
1. Amarcord by Federico Fellini. God, I can't quantify how much I love this movie, from the absurd characters to the stories that hit close to home, the settings, the accents and the music!!! The photography, the cinematography and the colours! This movie feels like remembering home once you're on your way back after a trip that you loved but left you drained. 2. Radio Days by Woody Allen. Again, I am a sucker for nostalgic movies that talk about how people grew up. I love this it's such a funny movie, and the soundtrack is amazing! The cast is spectacular and the overall quality of the movie is stellar! This is a movie you want to watch if you're in a creative slump, it's that good.

3. Annie Hall by Woody Allen. I watched this movie more times than I could count. I loved this movie because how it was shot and because of how happy it made my parents when I was a kid, but now that I'm an adult and I can understand this movie, I love it because of how it depicts change, I love how weird but still strangely real the characters are, how it portrays an alienated character which is full of flaws. And the jokes are supreme (especially those about LA jsjsjsjs).

4. Cars by Disney Pixar. I literally can recount the lines from this movie by heart. Talking about cult classic movies, this is the one. Made me fall in love with cars and stuff with wheels. I thought for like three years of my life, when I was a kid, that Lightning was bullshitting Luigi and he actually was a Ferrari because he was red. This is my get out of depression/jail card.
Tumblr media
5. Ratatouille by Disney Pixar. Honestly Remi is the sole reason I cook and I don't despise France too much. I LOVE THIS RAT and his passion and the fact that he doesn't hesitate in life, that he's full of flaws and talent and he still can make it work, even if life can be shit. My life goal is to make that soup. I will make it one day. I also learned an unhealthy amount of facts about rats bc of this movie. I LOVE IT.

6. Rush by Ron Howard. ANOTHER. MOTORSPORT. MOVIE. I don't have a personalities outside going vroom vroom, I'm sorry. I love Niki Lauda and I love Daniel Brühl, so this movie was made for a mf like me. It's a comforting movie, I love it, I watch it at least twice a year with my mom at lunch time and it's a family rule not to skip this if we find it while browsing through the TV channels.

7. The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson. MASTERPIECE! The colours, the cinematography, the cast, the story, the fucking painting and the prison and the characters? This is what a movie should be like, this is the visualisation of genius, pure and surreal genius.
Tumblr media
8. Mamma Mia! by Phyllida Lloyd. What more can I say. This is what I aspire to do in life, this is how my brain works.
Tumblr media
9. Inglorious Bastards by Quentin Tarantino. Now, I love a good Tarantino movie, but I was debating whether or not to put Pulp Fiction instead of this, but honestly this is a little less pulp and more enjoyable. It has the right amount of violence, it gives enough satisfaction against the nazis and it has Christoph Waltz and Daniel Brühl, what can I say? What could you want more out of a movie?
Tumblr media
10. Sense and Sensibility by Ang Lee. Now, this is a spot that is hard to give away, especially because I had like three movies I'd have liked to put here (all Jane Austen adaptations! the others were Emma 2020 and Pride and Prejudice 2005) but I chose Sense and Sensibility because I would do anything for period drama Hugh Grant. I love you Edward Ferrars.

Beau is Afraid: Movie Review. (Some Spoilers below)
Yo, what the fuck-
Beau is Afraid was directed by Ari Aster and released earlier this year on April 14th. Ari Aster is also well-known for directing other movies in recent years that are critically acclaimed, such as Midsommar and Hereditary. I have not seen either of those films, but they are on my list of movies I want to see. I have, however, seen the short film he released titled The Strange Thing About The Johnsons back in 2011.
Upon realizing Aster directed both films, I gotta know what the FUCK his parents think and what his relationship is with them.
Because if you don't know, spoilers for the Strange Thing About the Johnsons, the short film focuses on an abusive, incestuous relationship between a father and son, while Beau Is Afraid focuses on the dysfunctional relationship between a son and mother.
Beau is Afraid is…also just a wild movie. Joaquin Phoenix plays the titular Beau, an anxiety-riddled man who regularly keeps to himself. He goes to visit his therapist in an attempt to manage his anxiety and finds himself tested as he embarks on an emotional and overstimulating journey to visit his mother.
The course of events that transpire throughout the movie are strange but mostly fascinating. Beau lives in a crime-filled city with the most dangerous people lingering about. He leaves the door open one time, and like thirty random violent strangers literally wander in and violate his home. There's a part where he's hit by a truck and patched up by Nathan Lane and the girl who played Holly in The Office, Nathan Lane. But they're both suspect, and they have a daughter who's a bitch to Beau and then drinks a can of paint and dies. And then Amy Ryan sics an unstable war veteran to kill Beau as revenge because she thinks he did it. There's a play sequence that goes on for too long, but the events and story of the play were engaging. And the final act of the film…you have to watch the movie to grasp the battiness of it all.
Story-wise, it never felt boring. The story kept me engaged from start to end; I thought I could predict what could happen, but the story zigged when I thought it would zag. I wondered what would happen next to Beau in every scene. Acting-wise, everybody delivers a stellar performance. The cinematography is sublime as well, but two issues really drag down the film. The first is the length. This movie is three hours long and has no need to be. You could've shaved off at least half an hour. It drags the most during the play and forest sequence. Secondly, I am not fond of the ending. I won't spoil what happens, but I don't like what ultimately happens to Beau in the end or how that particular event transpired. Both problems are enough to significantly harm the film. However, it was still an entertaining watch that I wouldn't be opposed to watching again someday.
Recommending it to others is…a questionable option. If you're into surreal horror tragedy, then I think so. If you saw and liked Hereditary and Midsommar…maybe? That's hard to say since I didn't see those. Let's just give it a 3.5/5 and call it a day. If you haven't seen it…maybe watch the first hour. Decide from there if you want to see the rest.
