kind of bugs me that ive seen a few people say that tmosth is way better than sonic frontiers JUST because tmosth performed better on steam at launch.. completely ignoring that tmosth is a free visual novel that can be beaten in one sitting and frontiers is a 60 dollar game that would take at least a few days to beat and requires more skill and also a nicer more expensive computer to play if youre wanting to play it on steam. but sure tmosth just had more players because frontiers is garbage and no other reason (< sarcasm)

[NOT APRIL FOOL’S RELATED]
As the only supermariologist I follow, I wanted to know your opinion on a shower thought I had regarding the Mario franchise, specifically, what might be considered the “Main Cast” of the super Mario franchise.
I’m mostly curious about:
A) is there an official or semi-official set of characters defined in this way?
B) if not, what is your personal opinion (if any) on who that might be and what criteria that would require
Considering Mario, Peach and Bowser are almost certainly part of that cast (though Bowser is an antagonist…) I would say characters that appear or are playable in most if not all of the games who’s plot revolves around Bowser kidnapping Peach should be counted. That leaves me with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad (but is he a single character?), Yoshi, and Bowser.
I imagine that this is one of those things like “what is a mainline super Mario game” that has multiple ambiguous answers, but simply interested to know your way of approaching it!
this is a great question!
so there actually is a semi-official list of "main characters" for Mario in the same way there's an official list of mainline Super Mario games. over on mario dot nintendo dot com slash characters we can see that the main characters are:
Mario
Luigi
Princess Peach
Toad
Bowser
Yoshi
Daisy
Wario
Waluigi
Rosalina
Bowser Jr.
Boo
Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
whether or not this list is an actual satisfactory answer to "who are the main characters in Mario" is another question altogether of course. besides the obvious questionable things here, I'd like to point out the odd inconsistency of referring to "Princess Peach" by her full title while being on a first-name-only basis with Bowser, Daisy, and Rosalina. fun!
personally, I'd say there are a few different "tiers" of main character status in the Mario games. the main main characters are Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach. like, literally only those four. those are the four characters where it is always remarkable when a Mario game doesn't include one of them in a major role.
tertiary main characters would include all the recurring playable characters in ensemble multiplayer games, like Waluigi and Diddy Kong. (Diddy Kong would count as a main character if we were talking about Donkey Kong characters, but the question is about Mario characters, and Diddy Kong is definitely a tertiary main character in Mario games specifically) the real interesting question is who counts as being a "main character" at the layer between these two tiers.
I think Yoshi, Toad, Wario, and Donkey Kong are all a given for secondary main characters, but beyond that I'm really not sure! should Toadette count? what about Nabbit? Daisy? Kamek? Bowser Jr.? the Koopalings? Toadsworth? who knows! it's all very debatable, and there's no definitive answer here. nintendo's official list certainly isn't helping!

If Amy doesn’t appear in the 3rd Sonic Movie, these line are gonna ring extra hollow. Makes it more of a very late April Fools joke on Amy fans.
You had her finally be playable in a mainline game after 17 years with Sonic Frontiers, her finally getting to be Playable in the Classic games, then be part of the main cast in Sonic Superstars. Making it seem like Sega finally see her as important as Tails and Knuckles, the whole year of Amy, only for it to get overshadowed multiple times. She gets a Stand Alone idw comic that’s 1 issue. Fang the hunter a obscure side character, gets a whole 4 part mini series, which Amy isn’t even in. Amy gets a game about her birthday, with arguably the best writing for a Sonic game. Shadow gets a whole ass rerelease with a full ass DLC just for him with his name in the title.
And people just don’t seem to care about Amy if she is in the movie or not. I’ve seen more people asking about Rouge at this point.
It’s just so weird feeling to do this whole push for her then go nowhere with it.

alright this has been on my mind for hours so I’m just gonna say it
GUYS, I THINK TAILS AND SHADOW ARE FINALLY WARMING UP TO ONE ANOTHER IN CANON!
(!DISCLAIMER! I am talking about the MAIN timeline with the MAINLINE games and NOT the Sonic Boom timeline, and in sonic boom yeah shadow and tails fight like cats and dogs there and there’s no denying that, BUT THIS IS NOT ABOUT SONIC BOOM. THIS IS ABOUT HERE)
now, why do I think shadow and tails are starting to form a bond? A couple of new things actually:
First, Twitter Takeovers:
hold on, stAY WITH ME HERE OKAY??
in that one part where shadow kinda sings antihero with amy in one of the questions and yes that actually happened holy shit-
literally everyone, EVERYONE, didn’t know that shadow listened to taylor swift, not even SONIC knew that shadow listened to taylor swift EXCEPT TAILS
im serious, tails, in response to everyone’s confusion and surprise, says “shadow loves tay-tay!”
the little fox couldn’t have heard it from someone in the group because literally NOBODY knew about it? not even amy??
shadow and tails had to have had atleast a one-on-one casual convo about it! SHADOW WAS COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO SHARE HIS INTERESTS WITH HIM!
ok ok, don’t consider the twitter takeovers as canon? that’s fine! there’s other stuff!
Next, Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog:
now, most of this is near the end of the game, but hear me out here!
first, shadow and tails talk very casually with eachother!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
shadow and tails address and talk to eachother not very enemy or unfriendly-like, and tails isn’t afraid to chime in with shadow from time to time!
that’s also the thing, shadow and tails aren’t afraid of sharing their interests with each other, I don’t think that’s very “arch-enemy” of some people to do, y’know?
and one of my final points:
shadow praises tails in this game!
no, seriously, he does.
Tumblr media
“It’s true, you could drive this train flawlessly.” <— keyword!
and keep in mind, he genuinely didn’t have to say that, amy before that only said “I’d trust you drive this train!” to tails, shadow could’ve just said something like “yeah, you could.” or maybe just not have said anything, but no, shadow decided to praise him in that sentence, and he doesn’t compliment people a lot, so honestly it’s kinda sweet to me!
Tumblr media
(also, tails being very flustered at the compliment is super duper cute.)
And yes, the murder of sonic the hedgehog is canon. It may be an april fools game, but it is not something like the twitter takeovers where the VA’s may just be messing around, tmosth is a game made by sega. it is quite gladly canon.
Overall? Shadow and Tails aren’t exactly friends yet, but they are reaching the stepping tone of it! Their friendship seems to be building off respect and trust, and honestly, I love that a lot with them trusting eachother to be a hand to lean on, especially in the shadow games..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I look forward to them being friendly allies or even mutual friends if that ever happens.
I love these two. <3

A little rant regarding Leaf in Pokemon Masters
I honestly really hate it when people try to use the metronome event to debunk the idea that Leaf getting a clefable as her lodge pair proves that her and Green are the same character.
Like first of all, the Metronome Event was a one off event that involved RENTAL Pokemon, which heavily implies that the trainers involved would've kept the mons involved TEMPORARILY. So really, given the nature of all those togepis and clefairies being one off partners, do you really think that any of the trainers would've kept any of them permanently, including Leaf?
And also, what Leaf says during the event with her April fools clefairy doesn't necessarily imply that she didn't have one at that point. She only gushes over the clefairy (as she does with any cute pokemon) and then states how she used to travel all over Mt Moon hoping to find (and presumably catch) the species.
If anything, from my observation it just seems like she's just reminiscing how much effort she put into finding the clefairy/Clefable that she already has, as a way to express her love for the species, not to say that she didn't have one at all up until the event. If that's what her line of dialogue was trying to imply instead, the writers would've made her say "I'm so glad that I finally have one!" But they didn't.
I know clefairy is a somewhat rare pokemon but it isn't THAT rare that it's possible that Leaf went through all of Mt Moon without even encountering one. I remember encountering and catching clefairy at Mt Moon without even trying during my playthroughs of FRLG.
And this is exactly why I don't think this counterargument works and is basically just mental gymnastics done by Leaf ≠ Green people to deny the fact that Leaf's lodge pair being a Clefable proves that her and Green are the same, as so far the lodge pairs have been consistent with what mons the characters have in the mainline games. There I said it.

Also, if I may ask, how do you interpret the Creation Trio + Arceus as deities? In other words, do you think they're benevolent and merciful or wrathful and quick to anger? For instance, the story of the human and the sword in D/P/Pt indicates that while they will certainly intimidate, they seem hesitant to kill, even in retaliation. On the other hand, in PMD and the anime, they seem all too eager to eliminate humans because of perceived slights.
Now! This sure is a question, because I've basically created my set of headcanons for all of the Creation family throughout the years, since they're one of my the main objects of my brainrot DJHDGD
To me, they all act differently, and also situationally.
Dialga is the most cynical one. He is benevolent and enacts the role and purpose Arceus gave him fully, and he can show warmer emotions such as gratefulness when in the right situations (PMD2 being the biggest example), but, normally, in my opinion Dialga is neutral at best and has a certain disregard for mortals at worst, thinking of them as mere droplets of water in the vast river of time; thus, he often ignores them and their troubles, unless they do trouble him directly, unless reverence and worship is shown to him. He can also be very merciless.
Palkia is instead pretty emotional. He's the kindest and warmest of the three, and appreciates mortals as their own unique microcosms that should be respected as such, and he offers thankfulness to those who worship him. However he can also turn out to be very ruthless and instinctive in what he's doing, and he doesn't stand when his dominion is messed with by someone or something (PMD2), often harbouring to brute force. Despite his naturally kind nature, he can turn out to be as solemn as Dialga when the situation requires it.
Giratina despises mortals, be it Pokémon or humans. He sees them as the "perfect creations of his father" whom he wants to destroy as vengeance for what has been done to him: not only banished, but also forgotten by all. While probably the most brutal of the three, he is still very subtle most times, being deceptive and persuading to mortals as to use them as means for his own schemes (Volo). For short, in his eyes mortals are just a means to an end, so easily fooled and tricked.
Arceus, instead, is generally emotionally far from the mortal world, but they love their own creations and cares for them from the distance, as they watch over all (PMD2, Legends). They're not very prone to anger, but rather tends to resolve conflict with intricancies behind the scenes as to solve the universe's biggest problems. Regarding the mainline universe, they originally thought of Pokémon as the only creatures to inhabit this world, as humans were born as a "mistake of evolution"; but once the Ancient Hero of Hisuian mythos proved human dignity to them by challenging them in a friendly match, Arceus got that Pokémon and humans deserved equal respect, and even more did deserve the bond between them
I hope I haven't been too long with this DJDGDHDHDH, I know these are mostly headcanons and don't have much concrete proof in the games (be it DPPT, PLA or PMD), but I've grown to imagine them as their own characters, and with such personalities! I hope I answered your question in a satisfying way ♥️😭🙏

louie pikmin is the character ever. he's a gluttonous, greedy fool. he's a comedic side character, yet simultaneously a main playable character and the final boss. no one likes him, but everyone loves him. he is literally at fault for at least 5 boss fights throughout the series and there are only three mainline games in which he appears. also hes trans he told me himself

Introduction
Tumblr media
Hello. My name is Sophora. I am a Pokemon veterinarian. I live in Unova, but at the time of this writing, I am beginning a temporary stay in Johto to assist with a research project.
My blog is mostly thoughts and discussions of Pokemon care and science, as well as what photos I wish to share.
I am a former member of Team Plasma. My duties were to care for Pokemon injured by human deeds, and assess whether they could be released into the wild. Though I was nothing more than a child in training at the time. I wish to be clear that I, along with most Team Plasma members you will ever encounter, were fooled by Ghetsis, and truly do wish for improving the lives of Pokemon.
My sole Pokemon is a Zorua named Beans. I have had her for many years, and she is my dear companion.
I am often told I have no sense of humor, so please do not expect much in the way of jokes or banter from me. I am also often called rude, or at the very least blunt.
I will speak often on Pokemon care, as mentioned. I will answer any questions on Pokemon care when I am able, though I am mostly only familiar with Pokemon of the Unova region, and some of the Kanjoh region. I also will often speak on the life of a veterinarian and what sort of things one is expected to do in this job.
The difference between a Pokemon veterinarian and a Pokemon Center, for the record, generally involves overall health versus injuries. If it was a problem or health issue that came from battle, you go to a Center. If it is an overall health issue that did not come from battling, go to a veterinarian. Generally, we will refer you to the other one if you got it wrong.
My hobbies are reading and photography. I have given lectures about Pokemon care at conferences before, and I enjoy trying new foods. I am something of a coffee enthusiast, as well.
Most people I mention on this blog, I will be changing their names. This includes myself- Rotomphones should not replace basic internet safety for you all. The main exceptions will be people on this site who use their real name, and people who are otherwise too famous that it would be pointless to try to change their name.
I look forward to pleasant conversations with you all.
//OOC under the cut!
Player is over 21.
All posts will be tagged with 'pkmn irl' and 'unreality'.
This is, obviously, a Pokemon IRL rp blog.
I intend to not get involved in high stakes with the possibly exception of Team Winter stuff, or things that otherwise catch my interest. Most of them will be assumed to not happen.
Some notes on character canon!
Sapient Pokemon do not exist. There are rare exceptions, but they are extremely special and noteworthy. Pokemon intelligence varies, but generally they're animals. As a result, I would prefer not to interact with sapient Pokemon blogs, and if you do, Sophora will assume that you're a child roleplaying.
Legendary Pokemon are rare. The mainline games are canon but generally, Sophora doesn't know a lot of what happened. If it wasn't on the scale of Kyogre and Groudon, Sophora probably didn't hear about it! Sophora does not believe in a lot of legendary Pokemon as a result.
I do not do the whole 'magic anon' thing and such asks will be ignored.
Human-obtainable superpowers are Aura and psychic powers. That's about it. There are no other superpowers. Legendaries do not give children superpowers.
Legendaries may have been worshipped as gods but are not gods. There is no Arceus-based religion. People do not worship Arceus and do not treat it as the Christian god.
Most products that get parodied do not have the Pokemon parody names, and they just have the real world name. However, it is an in-universe meme to force Pokemon names into the product name, and that's why everyone has such differences (i.e. the proper name for the place is Starbucks, but some people call it Starlybucks and others call it Staryubucks, because it's a meme, not the real name.)
I want to avoid crossover stuff, it is not to my interest.
I want to try to keep to the tone of Pokemon as much as possible, so I'm going to be ignoring most things about murder and killing (unless it is a Cubone's mother).
Sophora can be, and often is, wrong about various subjects. However, she is a veterinarian and thus generally going to be correct about Pokemon care. Please do not show up to just correct me and claim my character doesn't know what she's talking about.
I try to avoid getting involved with the 'multiverse' stuff. As far as Sophora is concerned, there is only one reality, and it's hers. Please do not get deep into the weeds on that with her so I don't have to think about it too hard.
Animals exist! Pokemon are part of the ecosystem but normal animals exist, too. They just don't come up often because they aren't relevant.
Sorry if that sounds like too much stuff! I just wanted to be very clear from the outset.
EDIT:
If you are not someone already relevant about it, I will not acknowledge any asks where you try to prove legendary Pokemon. It's much funnier if Sophora refuses to believe in them. For understanding of the gag, please watch this video.
Sophora will not ever see or acknowledge a Legendary Pokemon outside of very specific circumstances. Please do not try to force the issue.

Hi! I've seen you post about the Realm of the Elderlings books and they seem really interesting but when checking the author's works, I have no idea where to start. Any recs on what book I should pick up first? Thank you!
Hi! absolutely happy to point you in the right direction! actually i will just give you my whole recommended reading order. sorry
the beginning of the series is called the farseer trilogy, it consists of assassin's apprentice, royal assassin, and assassin's quest
after that i strongly recommend reading the liveship traders trilogy, which takes place elsewhere in the world but has important worldbuilding and context for the 'mainline' fitz books. i also just really like them. it consists of ship of magic, mad ship, and ship of destiny
the second fitz trilogy is the tawny man trilogy, which consists of fool's errand, golden fool, and fool's fate
next, chronologically, is the rainwild chronicles series, a loose sequel to liveships. i read it after i finished the last fitz books, and it provides context for stuff that happens in those, but is less mandatory imo
the series that concludes fitz's story is the fitz and the fool trilogy, consisting of fool's assassin, fool's quest, and assassin's fate
yes it's 16 books and most of them are extremely long, i'm sorry, good luck, they took over my brain

Update: It’s now April 2nd so I can confirm this was an April Fools’ Day joke! Check out some behind-the-scenes of Avatar News’ secret collaboration with Pokemon artist Maohi Region here!
Original below:
Pokemon Avatar Legends mainline crossover game coming to Nintendo Switch in fall 2024
This weekend at the 2023 Tokyo Consumer Electronics Convention, Nintendo and Paramount Japan unexpectedly announced a “mainline crossover game” between the worlds of Pokemon and Avatar, taking both the Pokemon Legends and Avatar Legends names to form something new and very unique: Pokemon Avatar Legends, coming to Nintendo Switch in fall 2024.
This was a blink-and-you-miss-it reveal as part of Nintendo’s presentation on their plans to expand their collaborations with western brands thanks to their confidence in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie made with Universal Pictures’ Illumination animation studio (technically one of Avatar Studios’ competitors!).
Right now the only info we have is in Japanese so I did my best with Google Translate, but the gist of it is that the Pokemon Legends brand is pivoting from its first game Pokemon Legends: Arceus’ historical alternate time period of an existing Pokemon region to totally alternate universes with regions and Pokedexes inspired by other franchises’ worlds, starting with Avatar.
The only images we have are these two slides from their presentation from Yahoo Finance Japan (if I can find them in higher resolution I’ll update this). One is just the game’s logo (which notably features a new simplified version of the Avatar logo) and the other is, very excitingly, a look at what are presumably the starter Pokemon, but instead of the usual three (grass, fire, water) there are a familiar four: water, earth, fire, air!
Water: polar bear dog (including the symbol from Naga’s harness?)
Earth/grass?: saber-tooth moose lion (specifically Sokka’s encounter with Foo Foo Cuddlypoops lol?)
Fire: dragon
Air/flying?: winged lemur
They’re literally so cute and it’s crazy seeing them translated into Pokemon style, but they did a good job-- whoever “they” is, not sure if these designs went through the standard Pokemon company process or if Avatar Studios contributed.
Speaking of which, right now we’re really not sure how this collaboration is going to work. The above is pretty much all the info we have right now-- it looks like the convention is mostly about business and Nintendo’s presentation was mostly about the Mario movie and Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios, with this new game basically just mentioned in passing as one of the ways they’re going to start expanding beyond that. I’m guessing there will be news in the US on Monday explaining more what’s going on from the Avatar franchise side. We’ve known for a while that Avatar Studios is making a big push with video games but no one could have guessed that this would be part of it!
Sit tight for more info, it should be coming soon!

What's crazy to me about the Yakuza series is that RGG Studio has been doing near-annual releases for the past decade, and the quality has been incredibly consistent (except for the 3/4/5 remasters, which just haven't aged well in some aspects). That they're mostly making the same kind of game each time and it never feels stale, and they add enough new features/gimmicks each time to keep things fresh but not so much that the games lose their identity.
They made a detective spinoff with Takuya Kimura that managed to be just as good as the mainline series. They teased Yakuza 7 as a JRPG in a sort of double-April Fool's and then revealed it to be true. They took a game that for the previous fifteen years was an action-brawler and turned it into a competent JRPG, without losing it's identity. They created a new protagonist to take over for Kiryu with a distinct personality and an interesting story.
Toshihiro Nagoshi left the studio and the franchise has so-far maintained everything that makes it special. Even as the series has become much more popular internationally in recent years, it hasn't caved to industry trends or westernization.
All of these things on their own are impressive, but even moreso when you consider the frequency of new entries/remasters. At a time when some major studios seemingly can barely manage to put out a finished product due to absurd deadlines and mismanagement, RGG Studio exists on a separate plane entirely. I can only hope that it's a positive work environment and that everyone there is compensated well for their contributions.

The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog: Can We Get More of This?
No joke. You might have noticed from my sudden return to activity after a while, but I really, really liked The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Gaming April Fools jokes are quirky and weird by nature - that’s the point. But every once in a while a game developer will release an April Fool’s joke that is so fun and unique in its quirkiness that it takes off and completely captures the audience with its charm. Sometimes these are even on purpose - attempts to test the waters and deliver some fun at the same time, like the trailer for Fighting Ex Layer. Sometimes it’s probably not, but... maybe it could be. I think that’s what The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog could be.
Tumblr media
I‘ve been a Sonic fan for a very, very long time. I’ve loved most games in the series for the whole length of that time. There are few Sonic games I could say I outright dislike, tbh. But something I’ve long felt the Sonic series could’ve benefited from way back when was a stronger spinoff game. I think people give spinoffs a bad rap just on principle. “Why make disposable spinoffs when we can focus on making mainline games?”, people say (Sonic fans are also a bit unreasonably petrified of alternate gameplay styles). But I think that’s the missing the point. Spinoffs are a major part of what gives game series their identity - especially family focused series like Sonic. Not just because they give accessibility to a wider range of gamers, but because they make a buffer zone. Main line games take a long time. You have to wait years to see it, and if it has problems... well... that’s the reputation of the series for the next few years until the next game comes around. Spinoffs, however, mean that there’s always something involving the character out there to keep people interested. I means that if even if one game isn’t so good, there’s always others out there delivering quality. It gives the series something to look at at all times, and that gives it longevity. So why think about Sonic, a series about super speed and hi-momentum platforming, and make a visual novel spinoff? Visual novels are slow by nature, static images and careful deduction. Well... you make it for exactly the reasons everyone loved Murder.
People like these characters. People really like these characters. They’re fun. They’re all unique from each other. And they bounce off each other so well. But Sonic fans rarely get the chance to really experience the characters. Sonic’s long had a problem of loads of characters without quite knowing what to do with them. Characters like Rouge, a jewel thief primarily used for spy parodies, just plain isn’t going to be in most Sonic games - the games don’t have those kinds of plots often.
But that’s where a visual novel shines. Visual novels are all about going from scene to scene interacting with large swaths of characters, quirky conversations and unexpected character and plot developments. It’s not just that you can use tons of characters, but that you can give them center stage far more freely than you can in a platformer or a more action-focused plot. Sonic has been absolutely killing it this past year with adaptations and projects that were all about exploring the characters and what makes them fun, and Murder’s just the latest example. All the characters get segments to themselves to show off, tell jokes, and be fun - it’s silly and cartoony, charming with lots of character moments and eccentric turns, and it’s perfect for Sonic. So I really want to see more of this sort of thing!
Tumblr media
We could get more parodies like this - hey, if Detective Pikachu can be a thing, why not more Detective Tails? Or we could get more involved stories. Something more Adventure-esque, or something more Saturday Morning Cartoon-y like Colors. Or a mixture of both! Character focused, or whole cast all at once just like this. Another everyman as the focus character, or one of the cast - Tails actually makes a very good protagonist for this sort of thing. The sky is the limit, here. Even this little April Fools joke gave us a surprising amount of worldbuilding and fun ideas I hope get revisited someday. Plus, it has to be said that visual novels take an entirely different creative process than platform games, and this game indeed was made by a third party, so the crowd nervous that any spinoff could take away from the development of the main titles doesn’t really have much to worry about: in the end, these would be made by different teams. It’s just a good idea all around. So I really hope this doesn’t get abandoned. Give us the continued spinoff visual novel / point and click adventures of Sonic and friends. I imagine any future ones wouldn’t still be free, but sure I’ll pay for it. Why not? I mean, you’ve got a perfect premise right here:
