Pete’s Visit pt 2 - Russ & Lennon - dehumanizing language, petting, smoking, collars, Pete
Russell didn’t bother greeting them at the door the next day. Pete shouldered his way in, gracing the entryway in a breeze of clean cologne, a black pea coat, and saddled with a few expensive-looking shopping bags. Lennon shut the door behind them and fought the instinct to push in front of them and run up the stairs into Russell’s office as fast as he could. Maybe Russell would even let him curl up under the desk by his legs.
“Bit rude of him to send the dog to the door,” Pete huffed, bags rustling at his sides as they made their way to Russell. He was in his office chair, a pair of reading glasses propped up in his hair, rubbing a hand tiredly over the day-old stubble on his jaw.
Lennon had slept on the loveseat the past two nights to keep him company, and felt a lance of guilt every time he saw Russell’s eyelids drop closed at his desk. He hadn’t missed a detrimental amount of work, but wasn’t exactly used to the amount of leniency in his schedule.
“Working hard or hardly working?” Pete quipped, dropping the bags and roughing a fist into Russell’s hair. He batted at Pete half-heartedly and rolled his eyes, pushing back from his desk so he could turn to face them.
Kitty picked up the bags and stood in the open doorway, rubbing the toe of one shoe up and down the back of her other leg. She’d had her roots touched up and was wearing makeup now, her lips shiny and her eyes bigger.
“Please tell me you didn’t come here just to harang me about work, Pete. I’ve caught up on everything, unless you’ve got something extra laborious in your back pocket?”
Pete shooed Kitty out and shut the door, shooting a cursory glance at Lennon who was sat on the floor in front of the loveseat, a book open in his lap.
“You gotta help me with Kitty, man. She’s fucking miserable. I took her out around town yesterday, got her hair and nails done, booked a reservation that made a dent in my wallet, and she still won’t put out. It's like highschool all over again.” He was bouncing a leg, his fingers tapping along the top of Russell’s office chair. Agitated.
Lennon wanted to bolt.
“Hey kid,” Russell was looking at Lennon softly. “Go hang out with Kitty, yeah? I’ll be out soon.”
Lennon got up and put the book back where he got it and hesitated at the door. Russell winked conspiratorially and Lennon left, shutting the door with a quiet click.
Kitty wasn’t in the hallway, but Lennon found her in the living room, digging through the shopping bags on the coffee table. She flinched a little when she saw him.
“Hey, sweetie.”
“Good afternoon, ma’am.”
She seemed flustered, jutting out her bottom lip to blow her hair out of her face while she rummaged.
“Can I help you find somethin’, ma’am?”
Lennon moved toward the closest bag, a small matte black one with something embossed in silver on the side. He wondered how much money Pete made.
“No, no, honey. I’m just a little disorganized today. We’ve got to sort through some of our purchases before we head back home. Can’t haul this mess through the airport.”
She gave up after another moment of digging and sat on the couch, patting the empty seat beside her. Lennon wouldn’t, usually, but it seemed like Kitty needed it more than he did.
He sat and drew his legs up to his chest, wrapping his arms around them and knocking his temple softly against his knees. Kitty took out a carton of cigarettes from her purse and bit one out, tugging it with her teeth and lighting it in quick succession.
Lennon wanted to say something but he didn’t know if smoking was allowed or not. He made a mental note to ask Russell later, and prayed silently that he wouldn’t get in trouble for it.
“C’mere, sweetie.” She tugged on his upper arm and he let himself move down til his head was in her lap, her hand in his hair. He felt the light scraping of her salon nails on his scalp and thought of Russell’s big, warm hands moving through his hair. Kitty’s hands were cold and it made a shiver jerk through him.
“This’s nice.” Her voice sounded far away, like she didn’t realise she was speaking out loud.
Lennon made an agreeable sound and moved his cheek along the itching fabric of her skirt. It was nice, she smelled like the inside of a church and lilacs, and even the cigarette smell was comforting after a while.
They sat in companionable silence until the office door opened. Lennon sat up and moved around the coffee table until he was sitting on the floor in front of Russell’s chair. He felt a little dirty, a tight tingling in his stomach as he watched the bottom of the stairs. Like he’d betrayed his master somehow.
Pete hopped the last three steps and took off his coat, an open black dress shirt underneath with a matching black belt and slacks. The monochrome of his outfit was cut by the gold at his belt, and the class ring on his hand.
Russell walked past him and slumped down into his chair, moving his hand over Lennon’s hair. Lennon pushed into it and turned to Russell, keeping his eyes on Russell’s chin.
“Come here.”
Lennon must’ve been willing him to say it, but the voice didn’t come from in front of him. It came from Pete. He turned around slowly and let his eyes trail up until they settled on Pete’s neck.
Surely he wasn’t talking to Lennon? He turned back to Russell and set his mouth against Russell’s jeans. His voice came out hot and muffled against the fabric.
“Is it okay to smoke in the house, sir?”
Kitty giggled across the room and Russell grinned. One of his canines was turned in slightly, Lennon noted.
“Yeah, kid. I used to, all the time.”
That was the tinge in his room, in his sheets. Lennon tried to shake the image of his master smoking in the bed they shared, the filter pinched between his lips, his eyes hazy behind the smoke. He moved his legs closer together and nodded, his lips moving against the seam of Russell’s jeans.
“Lennon.”
Lennon whipped around. Pete was standing a foot away from him now, the black shopping bag hooked on two of his fingers. He could kick Lennon from here. Step on his fingers, press the heel-
“Yes, sir?” It felt like a violation to even call him that.
“Got a little somethin’ for ya,” he drawled, proffering the bag. Lennon reached for it but Pete snatched it back, smiling. “Ah, ah, ah. It’s a surprise, for Russ. C’mon, kitchen.”
Russell was smiling at Pete (oh look, brother’s playing nice) when Lennon went to check, so he got up and followed Pete into the kitchen. The muted sunlight washed everything out and made it colder somehow, and Lennon found himself wanting to reach for the light switch.
Pete set the bag down and took a small, black box from it, shuffling the lid off.
“Cost a pretty penny but it's nothing but the best for my brother,” he said, almost reverently, as he put the lid in the bag.
Lennon stared at it.
Slightly on the thicker side, looped twice into a white cushion. A silver chain.
He felt all the air leave his body at once, his head spun, and he clutched at the counter for any sort of purchase.
Pete moved forward and used his free hand to keep Lennon up, stepping closer until he had Lennon pinned against the island. He took the necklace out and unclasped it, wrapping it around Lennon’s neck and clipping it again at the back. It settled, cold and blunt, against the skin of his throat, the second loop stopping in the middle of his sternum.
Pete’s voice was soft, laced with venom. “I think it suits you.”
Lennon made a telling noise in his throat and watched as Pete’s mouth curved into a pleased smile. “Happy to have your collar back, dog?”

(100) Million Dollar Lawsuit
Intro | part1 | part2 | part3 | part4
We are on the last chapter (for now) and this the most chaotic one. Mainly because it doesn’t follow any kind of chronological order (or logical sense), it’s just Russ going in circles for literal years.
But I’ll try my best to condense it for you, so all you need to do is to keep your seat belt fastened until the aircraft stops completely.
Tumblr media
Right after the failed Ari lawsuit, Russ goes back to his one and only love: Taylor Swift 💫 And he has learned a lesson — not a good lesson, mind you, but a lesson: small claims courts won’t take him anywhere. If he really wants to punish women for not complimenting his suit, he will have to file a multi-million dollar federal lawsuit.
But, since denying sex from The Russell isn’t illegal (yet), he had to come at it from a different angle. I’m going to give Russ a chance to explain himself first.
Before you ask: yes, the following was Russell’s response to a woman thanking Taylor for visiting an 8 year-old girl who was very badly burned in an accident.
Tumblr media
As I’ve always said, it’s okay if you aren’t fluent in Bullshit. That’s what I’m here for.
You see, Russell views human interactions as a series of transactions: I make a tweet worth liking, you go on a date with me; I take you to Olive Garden, you give me a handie for free; I put on a suit, you hug me and smile; I write you a song and sue you, you produce said song. Whenever women don’t fulfil their side of the deal, he becomes enraged.
But the reason he has such a strong hate-boner for Tay, is because she seemed to also follow his same ‘moral code’. A kid makes a cute video, she visits them at the hospital. A fan writes her a letter inviting her to their wedding, she goes to the wedding. A couple of kids fold 1989 paper cranes for Andrea, Taylor invites them to one of her concerts.
Russ thought “this is a done deal”. He didn’t write that song for Taylor because he particular liked her; he just thought she’d be the most likely artist to produce it — or at least acknowledge his existence.
Tumblr media
I mentioned before that Russ wrote a whole-ass book about this. And I think it’s as good a time as any to talk about it. For a short amount of time, Russell chilled out about the ✨100 million dollar lawsuit ✨ but my guess is that he thought his book would get him the same results as a lawsuit? To be fair, the book is fantastic. 5/5, would recommend.
He details the harassment he went through after suing Taylor Swift (the first time). Apparently old ladies at coffee shops would scream at him because he dared to sue Our Queen. A Mexican even pointed a gun at him (it wasn’t me, guys! Just a fellow countryman ❤️) and ordered Russ to drop the lawsuit. Computers at his job caught on literal fire because he was sent very powerful viruses. His friend Ken — who definitely exists! — was hit with a Molotov cocktail. Yep. 2016 was definitely the year people were willing to murder for Taylor Swift.
There’s also this brilliant dream sequence that involves an owl with the voice of Morgan Freeman, and Taylor’s agents guarding a tower in which she’s being held captive.
ALSO ALSO: an entire chapter is called “SHE CHOSE HIM OVER ME”. Taylor Swift chose Joe Alwyn — a man she actually knows — over a man she’s not even aware exists. Women, amiright?
I think Russell would enjoy the Kaylor community to a certain extent. Not the lesbian part, obviously: he doesn’t trust women who don’t want to touch his peen. I just mean the baseless hatred of Joe. Look, I made a little collage of his rants ❤️ tell me if any of this sounds familiar!
Tumblr media
You know — I’ve been joking around a lot about Russell just wanting to do the nasty with Taylor. But you know me, I like joking around. In reality Russ only wants what is fair. He wants to put a stop to all these senseless acts of kindness perpetrated by Taylor ‘The Generous’ Swift.
Tumblr media
This isn’t about him at all, actually. Shame on you for thinking there’s an ounce of greed in that selfless little body of his. HE’S DOING THIS TO PROTECT THE KIDS WITH CANCER!
Tumblr media
There are no ulterior motives here! This isn’t about a date!
Tumblr media
THIS IS NOT ABOUT A DATE AT ALL GUYS STOP SAYING THAT.
Tumblr media
I think this is my favourite post of his, because– grammatically speaking –he doesn’t specify which of them is wearing the red dress. And that sends me every goddamn time.
Anyway. The book, as magnificent as it was, got him absolutely nowhere. I know, I can’t believe it either. So he went back to focus on his lawsuit. But apparently not enough, because he didn’t serve her properly..? Now, don’t expect me to understand this, because I am very stupid (so it’s quite a good thing that I haven’t sued anybody for millions of dollars) but something about him sending the lawsuit to her old legal team..? And then trying to force UPS to serve her? I think he even said he was going to serve her in the middle of one of her concerts... but I’m guessing that didn’t go as planned 🤷‍♀️ oops.
Of course, Russie wouldn’t allow such an anticlimactic ending. Can you guess what he did? Please tell me that you can guess what he did. HE MADE ANOTHER SONG 😭❤️
This one is called ‘I Don’t Get You, Taylor Swift’. Another masterpiece that we definitely didn’t deserve 🙌

youtube
This was around April, 2019. By then I was being lured away by Kaylors, so I broke it off with Russ. I know that he filed a 3rd lawsuit against Taylor last year, which is just like the second one but hopefully this time he’ll be able to serve. And listen— I know that sounds like an awful thing to wish on Taylor, but I’d rather have Russell occupied suing a rich woman (who isn’t even going to deal with him), than a poor sex worker in Nevada. I bet TayTay would prefer that too.
Well guys, I’ve mentioned this a few times already, but I really had to be selective with the amount of information I was going to throw at you. I’ve avoided some of the shittier stuff he said or did, because I wanted to keep these posts as lighthearted as possible. I also didn’t touch on many things because they would just derail us. Like for example: one of the few lawsuits he has filed against someone who isn’t a woman, was against the state of Utah. I know, right? He’s trying to singlehandedly legalise prostitution in Utah, and even wrote a book (more like a pamphlet) brilliantly titled ‘Why I'm Making It Legal for Your 18 Year Old Daughter to Get In Bed with a Complete Stranger for Only 500 Bucks: A Short Essay from a Pro Se Litigant who is Challenging the Utah Brothel Bans’.
I copy-pasted that title guys, I swear to god.
The book is very graphic. This one I certainly do not recommend as I still suffer nightmares because of it.
Tumblr media
Soren is a character who also had to be cut out — which is a shame because he really tried to be a good christian and help Russell. Not as in “I support you, Russell” but as in “why don’t you take a nap, Russell”. Turns out, even cinnamon rolls have a limit. Russ, of course, blames Taylor Swift for the fact that he’s losing his friends. I’m not joking — it’s an article in his lawsuit:
Greer has lost family relationships, friend connections and business connections because of the trauma of Taylor Swift. His family tells him to "get over it," resulting in shouting matches and strained relationships. Greer's friends get annoyed by his focusing on the trauma of it, when nobody knows the pain of getting rejected by a public figure — twice — and the fallout that has resulted from it.
Russell embodies that comic/meme of the little guy who puts a stick in his bicycle’s wheels and then blames Taylor Swift when he inevitably falls.
Sooooo...
Maybe someday I’ll write a post about Russ’ latest antics. I know he still posts stupid stuff on Facebook, which he later deletes. He shined especially bright at the peak of the BLM movement. He also plead guilty to electronic communications harassment— did you see that conviction coming? Yes, yes you did 😌
Regarding Taylor, I read that Russ knew someone who knew Todrick Hall — and Russ sent him a song and video for Taylor. All he got back was a Cease and Desist letter. But I’d have to do a bit of digging to get the details. I was already so overwhelmed with organising the information I was previously aware of, that I decided to leave the newer stuff for another time. You know, once I’ve had some time to inform myself... as well as a really long shower.
Since I left so much shit out, I’ll be taking questions if you have any. And if you can muster the courage to ask them. I’m weirdly proud of being some kind of Russell encyclopaedia. I might not have much going for me...
There’s no ‘but’ — that was the complete statement.
Before I go, I wanted to add this screenshot. I absolutely love it because it summarises ✨The Russell Experience✨. Russ wants Taylor to know pain, poverty and punishment. But when asked “why?” his answer is just “oh, I was ignored lol”

First Date
Mac & Riley finally get to go on their first date, they’ve been wanting to for a while. Dinner at a romantic Italian Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles then a walk on the beach not far from Mac’s house. Riley was in a dark green strapless dress, hair was straightened and half way up. Mac had on a classic black suit with a dark green tie to match his dates dress.
“Mac are you ready?” Riley asked grabbing her bag.
“yes, you look stunning” he said with a smile taking her by the arm.
She smiled and straighten his crooked tie. They drove to the restaurant laughing and telling stories from the week, the main one was Jack was home for a little R&R. They made their turns to the restaurant and Riley noticed they had a tail.
“Mac, I think someone is following us” she said looking back at a black sedan tree car lengths behind.
“Riles, we are fine, this is L.A. cars follow other cars all the time” he said looking through his side mirror noticing the car.
“What the hell?” he asked out loud, they had hit a red light and the black sedan was now one car length between them.
“What is it?” she asked.
“It’s Russ & Bozer, there’s someone else in the back but I can’t tell who it is” he said.
“What? why are they following us” she asked.
“no clue, the only person I told was Boz” he said.
“um, I think I know who the other person is” she said pulling out her phone.
“who?” he asked.
“Jack, I told him we were finally going on a date and he lost it” she said.
“Happy lost it or protective lost it” Mac said.
“Protective, but he knows you, likes you and trusts you so I think he was excited to” she said.
“What are we going to do Mac, I don't want to feel pressured with them following us” she asked, she just sent Jack a “what the hell are you doing?” text.
“ignore them, let’s have a great time and not let them ruin our night” he said stopping the car, giving the keys to the valet. He walks over and opens the door for Riley taking her by the hand, helping her out. She doesn't wear heels much so she’s not very steady tonight.
“I don’t see them now do you?” she asked they were waiting in line to enter the busy restaurant.
“yeah, they are parked right around the corner” he said pointing to the black sedan with it’s lights on, as soon as he did the lights went off.
Riley giggled “they must have seen you point to them” she was holding his hand.
“maybe” he said leaning down to kiss her on the cheek.
“lets go have a great date Mac” she said retuning the kiss and they walked in the restaurant still holding hands.

The Velvet Suit from the 1910s: Kent State University Collection
This is a closeup of the jacket of an ensemble in the costume collection of Kent State that dates to the 1910s to the early 1920s. Since it is mid-calf length, it has to be before the mid-1920s when skirts crept upwards. It is made of a blue-purple silk velvet which means it has the flowing color and the lovely plush of that beautiful but fragile fabric. The jacket is in the Russian style, or à la Russe as they called it in Paris, with a standing collar and an asymmetric opening shut with matching covered buttons and loops. The sleeves are cut-on, that means they are in one piece with the bodice pieces. The skirt has shirring, or gathers as the waist and fall down from there.
This outfit has the generally easy, bloused shape that was popular in the 1910s, a time in between the tight hour-glass and the very loose tube. One of my favorite early silhouettes as it was easy to wear, but still had some shape to it. And silk velvet, now usually rayon-silk blends, is so lovely and allows you to wear a dark color, but still be formally dressed.
The Kent State University Museum offers exhibitions of their costume collection regularly, and you can find more of their collection here:

Inspire Yourself with These ones of Kind Crystal Jewelry Pieces: Crystal Fashion Jewelry
Tumblr media
If you're on a date or out with your girls, crystal jewelry is the best way to add a little sparkle and color to your outfits. You'll find beautiful crystal bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and more. In general, crystal pieces can be used to match virtually any budget.
Pendant and Necklace
• At first glance, his Swarovski Cosmic Necklace looks to be something you'd only wear for the most glamorous of dresses and special occasions. Consider wearing it with a maxi dress and a chambray tee or a denim jacket. The deep blues, oranges, purples, and white will look great with the bolder fall and winter colors, whether relaxed or formal. It would set you back around $400.00.
• Nordstrom's Cristabelle Crystal Choker Necklace would look great with something, but it would be particularly interesting paired with a longer necklace with a scoop or v-neck cover, but it could also stand alone with a little black dress. This template costs a little more than $50.00.
Tumblr media
ear studs
• The Macy's Eliot Danori Raindrop Crystal Earrings would go with everything but the most casual of outfits. They're less than $50.00 and can attract more eyes to your face due to the dangle look and sparkle. They have a 1.5-inch drop, making them the right size to pair with other pieces of jewelry without fading into the context of your overall look.
• Kohl's Crystal Radiance Rainbow Corkscrew Earrings demonstrate how much fun crystals can be, with blue, green, black, and pink crystals set in silver-plated brass. You should expect to pay $75.00 or less.
a ring
• Swarovski's Fun Ring is aptly named. It has a whimsical, sophisticated feel to it, and it'll just set you back about $200.00. Choose from blue-toned crystals and palladium plating, or rose gold plating with a variety of delicately polished stones. Each ring features three spherical designs of varying sizes. This style is versatile and can be worn with a variety of outfits.
• The Nordstrom BP. Stacking Rings Set of 5 helps you to mix and match the rings and create your own exclusive look. They are less than $20.00 and feature gold-tone metal and gems.
Tumblr media
Bracelets are a kind of bracelet.
• For under $100.00, the Swarovski Crystaldust Bangle Double in Black will turn heads and go with everything from dressed-up blue jeans to a little black dress. Blue, white, yellow, black/silver, and gray are among the five most dazzling colors available. To suit your wrist, choose between tiny and medium.
• The JCPenney Vieste® Crystal Lace-Look Bracelet is an exquisite item that will bring an additional layer of elegance to your dressier ensembles for under $20.00. It's made of silver-tone alloy with translucent crystals, and it has a glistening lace look.
Pins are used to holding things together.
• Kohl's' 1928® Gold Tone Crystal Floral Brooch (under $30.00) is inspired by vintage jewelry. The pink Austrian crystals aren't the focal point of this brooch; instead, they help to emphasize the general structure. It can be pinned to a jacket or hat, or used as a scarf or wrap. It's only two inches tall, which makes it big enough to be a conversation starter when combined with solid colors.
• Bling Jewelry has the Buzzing Bee Brooch for just under $40.00 if you're looking for anything a bit different. It measures about 1.25 inches by one inch and would look great on a jumper, shirt, or denim jacket. It has pave set clear, citrine, and orange stones.
What to Look for When Buying Crystal Jewelry
Crystal jewelry can be found in nearly every large box or department store. Decide what colors (including metal) you like in your jewelry before you go shopping. And if your budget is restricted, take a few minutes to look at the online catalogs of various department stores, as crystal jewelry isn't necessarily costly and is often discounted. Mall shops for teenagers and young adults, such as Forever21 and Charlotte Russe, are also worth checking out because they always have trendy models at incredibly low prices. If you want to layer your crystal jewelry with other items, these stores will make it simple to create a whole new jewelry look without breaking the bank.
Tumblr media
Specialty shops like Swarovski and other jewelry outlets are a fine place to start if you only want one or two higher-end items that will last for years and aren't concerned with tracking trends. You'll find pieces of crystals that look like diamonds but don't cost as much.
How to Style Crystal Fashion Jewelry
The simplicity of crystal fashion jewelry is one of its most appealing features. Yes, they sparkle and can spice up an ensemble, but unlike diamonds and pearls, they don't really seem like they should be reserved for special occasions. Layer crystal chokers with longer pendants, stack bracelets and pins, or add a pin or brooch to your jacket or scarf at the last minute. Wear statement earrings with a statement belt, a chunky bracelet, and a big bangle, for example, but vary the sizes of the pieces. Know that, as in most jewels, less is typically enough. Mix and match crystals with mixed metals or even leather jewelry. There are no guidelines to follow. It all depends on your personal preference, the clothing you're wearing, and the style of the crystal item you're wearing.
How to Take Care of The Crystal
Take care of your crystal jewels. To clean it, polish it with a soft cloth (damp if necessary), but never submerge it in water or detergents. Keep in mind that these things aren't supposed to be worn in the shower, baths, or hot tubs, or even while washing your hands or adding cosmetics to other areas of the body (such as hairspray, perfume, or soap,). If you treat these parts with care, they will last for longer and retain their luster and charm. Often keep your crystal fashion jewelry in a secure place, such as a fabric-lined drawer of a jewelry box, away from any items that might tangle it.
Tumblr media
Style with a Splash
This type of jewelry has a wide variety of designs and prices, so there is something for every lady. If the personality is daring or understated, jewelry with crystals adds a sparkly touch that will update your look. You'll have the extra enhanced touch of glittering elegance anytime you like it if you choose pieces you enjoy and care about them properly.

Many peoples claim that gemstones have healing properties of their own. The typical chakra jewelry set might include:
• Red Tiger's Eye: This jewel is thought to help the solar plexus chakra regenerate after it has been overworked. • Carnelian: This reddish-orange gemstone is said to open and unlock the sacral chakra, as well as stimulate the feelings and offer a sense of well-being. • Citrine: This golden stone boosts mental insight and self-esteem, as well as bringing good fortune. • Green Jaspar: This gemstone is thought to purify light, giving peace and a sense of well-being to those who wear it. • Sodalite: Aids in the development of human inner healing and communication abilities. • Amethyst: This is the dream gemstone. It's thought to aid in the acquisition of knowledge and the protection of the mind from negative energy. It further strengthens the creativity and intuitional abilities. • Quartz Crystal: Quartz is thought to help clear your mind of contradictions and doubt, purify your emotions, increase insight, and get you closer to your "spiritual" self.
What Does It Mean to Wear a White Chakra Necklace?
The calming properties of gemstones in these bracelets are useful for each chakra. Chakra Bracelets are the most common 7 chakra jewelry. Holding chakra pendant necklaces, bracelets, or other forms of chakra multi-gemstone jewelry emits a high vibration of obsidian, lapis lazuli, citrine, carnelian, zincite, jasper, or any other healing stone, which helps you draw infinite joy and abundance. Amethyst, Blue Lapis, Jade, and mother of pearl are some of the high frequency chakra healing gemstone jewels that are often used. They emit a distinct pulse that stimulates our vigor centers while still assisting us in other areas that we may or may not be aware of.
Another balancing and soothing piece of jewelry are these seven chakra tree of life necklaces. They contain seven stones that aid in the connection and free flow of vigor through the chakras. Chakras that are energized minimize the likelihood of emotional and physical pain. All of these incredible multi gemstone yoga jewelry items make lovely chakra gifts for any yoga or meditation enthusiast.

Pairing: Noora/William | Noorhelm ; Chris/Eva | Chriseva
Part: One
Summary: William has finally moved in with Noora and is now dealing with the repercussions of being cut off. Chris has made it clear where he stands with Eva, but what happens when what was once enough isn't anymore? Life goes on. At least that's what everybody says.
or
the one where an adventure begins and another one ends.
**
The party was quite beautiful.
There was something about the way a celebration can bring together people from all walks of life. Each person had affected each other in one way or another. Sometimes all it took was one choice.
They would all remember this moment. In ten years from now, when they're all in different paths in life, this is what they'd look back on. They we're all connected.
Forever or fleeting, that mattered.
Everything was going to change after today. He had no idea where his life was heading. If he was good at anything, it was pretending that everything was fine.
William Magnusson, affected by anything? Not a chance.
Except that was a facade. Shit did get to him, but his problems were his own.
"So, I was talking to Eva earlier." Noora says as she casually strolls up to the spot he's been sitting. Taking a seat right in his lap, throwing him off balance in his thoughts.
"Did she say anything about what's going on with Chris?" he asks.
William was worried, to say the least. He had seen Chris be adamant about a lot of things in the span of time he's known him. The moral of the story - cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye promises were shit and he'd change his mind in a heartbeat. William had to keep reminding himself that things are different now, of course. They've grown up and matured. He questioned Chris the same way when Chris told him he would be joining the army. It's not to make him doubt himself, but be absolutely fucking sure. Chris deserved to feel the amount of happiness he felt. Nevertheless, William knows Chris can handle himself, but there was a part of him that still felt the need to look out for him.
It's always been the two of them against the world.
Being seven making paper eye patches to wear during their sword fights, sharing chicken pox miserably at nine but it was okay because wearing mittens as lobster claws was cool, the race at eleven for whose voice would crack and who'd get their first armpit hair first, turning fifteen and competing for the higher amount of goals in football for a dumb trophy or being seventeen doing Russ together while throwing what they thought were groundbreaking parties. The time at nineteen fates finally deemed goodbye for a while was necessary.
"Promise me that no matter how far we're separated this isn't a permanent goodbye." Chris muttered quickly because feelings sucked. Change was scary. He was smart enough to know that this would happen one day. He just never wanted it too. "You're my best friend."
William expected this to go much easier. Everyone found it so easy to leave him so why was it so hard to just pick himself for once. Chris had never left him. It was that simple. Instead, William felt terrible like he was losing a limb from his body, but he'd never dare show it. "When Noora and I have kids, I need proof that I was cooler."
"Fuck you, Magnusson."
"You wish."
One pill after another to swallow.
"I think I'm in love with Eva." That statement didn't throw William. It's been four years leading up to this moment. Two spent where Chris only had eyes for Eva. Anyone involved with either of them could see it. For Christ-sakes, they've been attached at the hip. He's more surprised that its taken him this long to admit he has feelings.
William rests his head on her shoulder looking back in the same spot he was earlier - Chris and Eva dancing to some slow song he doesn't know the name of.
"Is this why you're sitting here brooding?" Noora asks.
"Chris told me he thinks he's in love with her."
Noora spun her head around quickly to look at him, "What?"
"He dropped it on me and I told him that he isn't." William admitted. He's starting to get that really awful itch inside of his stomach he gets when he knows he's done something he shouldn't have. Don't get him wrong, at the moment, he thought what he was saying was correct.
Now that stupid advice he gave isn't looking too hot. He's noticed how anxious Chris has been the last couple days in anticipation to how Chris has not taken his eyes off Eva since they picked her up.
"I think I was wrong." William states. He missed the mark completely.
Noora surveyed the scene in front of her, "I have never seen Chris be nervous around a girl, especially Eva. He's trying." Swiping the fallen pieces of William's hair out of his face, Noora continued, "I think I'd be really great if he got some encouraging words from his best friend."
William picked Noora up and gently sat her down in the spot he previously occupied. "I think I will."
Before William got too far away, Noora grabbed his hand to make him pause, "Eva's a little bit in love with him too. She's just scared, but you didn't hear it from me."
William gave a quick kiss to her inner palm, "Thank you."
"Can I steal him for a minute?" he asked after tapping on Chris's shoulder to get their attention.
"Aw, you want to dance? How sweet of you Wilhelm." Chris said in a sickeningly high pitched voice that made him to want to drill holes into his head. Not to mention, Chris thinking its hilarious to call him Wilhelm every once and a while to rile him up is going to have to stop.
"Funny. No, I actually need to talk to you."
Eva threw a wave of her hand in the air before she took off in the direction of Noora, "Bye boys."
Chris grabbed William's arm tightly,"Oh thank god, you came and saved me."
"What?" William scrunched up his nose in confusion. Saved him? What the fuck was going on.
"We have to get out of here." Chris said panicking.
William could see the sweat starting to pool around the edges of his hairline and it wasn't hot out. "Again, I repeat, what?"
"I was trying to tell Eva she's pretty but all I said was the purple is nice. Not that she looks pretty in her purple dress. JUST PURPLE." Chris was whisper yelling at him right now. "You never said it was this hard for you and Noora."
"It wasn't."
"You didn't win her over without woo-ing her."
"Woo-ing her? I won her over with my winning personality." William stated with the smile of a Cheshire cat.
"Where? In between the constant brooding or eye rolling?"
William placed his hands on both of Chris's shoulders, "No, that's only reserved for you."
"I hate you." Chris sighed miserably.
"Relatable."
"No wonder why she won't give me a chance. I think I love her and suddenly all my ability to speak to her like a normal human being flies out of the window."
"You just need to collect yourself. You're too much in you head right now. Being nervous is okay. Giving up is not a part of your vocabulary. You've never given up on anything in your life." He wants to say including him but he doesn't. "You don't need any big theatrics even though that's sort of your thing. Dramatics and all. You just need to be open and honest. Listen to every word she says and every word she doesn't. Be as loyal to her as you've been to me all these years. You're capable of being more than a high school reputation you've grown out of. Just be yourself."
"What if she doesn't like who I am?"
"Bullshit Chris. She wouldn't have had any type of contact with you for four years now if she hadn't." William so desperately wants to tell Chris what Noora told him but Chris should discover it on his own.
Chris takes a deep breath in through his nose and exhales through his mouth letting the nervous energy fall away, "Fuck, I wish there was some alcohol at this party."
"You got this." William says adamantly.
"I got this." Chris repeats confidently.
All would fall into place. It always does.
The games have officially begun.
**
Eskild just hasn't realized William's been playing along until then.
William could hear the bathroom door open despite the hot water hitting the bottom of the porcelain tub. There was no reason to speed up the shower process. No, he would make Eskild wait for the show he's been practically begging for.
He's not complaining.
He actually gets quite the kick out of it.
Eventually, he does have to get out of the shower and get ready. William would joke that the world does not revolve around a certain blonde that’s completely destroyed his world in a great way, but it does. It truly does.
Noora gave him a list of very specific rules.
One: Don't be late. Be at Eva's at eight o'clock sharp. (He's slightly offended since he's never been late once. The eight months definitely don't count.)
Two: Wear the black on black suit. Chris is wearing a light blue shirt to match Eva's dress. (Since when did Noora give Chris the time of day enough to give him clothes advice?)
Three: Reassure Chris. I'm doing the same with Eva. Anything and everything is possible. Our best friends deserve to be in love like us. (Except we're better.)
Four: This is not a rule. I love you. Thank you for always being the best. (He loves her too. He can't wait to see how beautiful she'll look tonight.)
If he fucked this up, he'd officially have a pissed off girlfriend and best friend for ruining the night.
A situation that is completely avoidable.
Turning the knob to kill the water, he pulled the shower curtain back. Eskild's eyes went from his face to his chest to his abs and finally to the money shot.
A smirk unfolded upon his lips as he fastened the towel around his waist. Extra low on the hips to show off the v on purpose. "I hope you enjoyed the show."
Eskild was flabbergasted. William had been there a month already and showed no signs of loosening up. The power point presentation was the last time the nerves choking him seemed to be nonexistent.
"You can give me one anytime, Willie."
"William, Eskild." He corrected. "Was it everything you hoped it to be?"
"More so, Wilhelm." Eskild said making a point. I guess it was better than pookie which he got the first week here.
Moving past Eskild, he felt a hand slide down his back. "Slick pookie."
William groaned internally. He spoke too soon.
**
The moon was shining exceptionally bright tonight.
Morning. This morning.
The chill has already creeped in, nipping at the tip of his nose and ears. Its made its home in his bones and upon every uncovered surface.
William's sort of mad at himself or maybe the world for pushing him back into this nasty habit again.
Definitely only his fault.
His lips are wrapped around the cigarette taking a long deep drag before exhaling the smoke burning his throat.
The streets are dead and the only sound he can hear are his own thoughts running rapid in his head. He was silently struggling with everything that was his life right now. The only happiness he had was Noora. She was his constant.
The new job was killing him, but he knew this is what he had to do. Taking orders wasn't something William was fond of because he was always the one giving them. Now he's sorting through law office mail and grabbing coffee. In Chris' words - a peasant. If William could have smacked the smirk off his face that day, he would of. The little shit makes one responsible decision in his life and he's suddenly on a pedestal.
William had to keep reminding himself this was a foot in the door as he flicked the cigarette into the middle of the street. He had to earn his way to the top and he respected that. Its just that adapting looked so much easier on everybody else.
The door of the apartment building creaked open and a sleepy Noora walked out. The guilt of worrying her when she awoke to an empty bed nawed at his insides, but when she sat down on the sidewalk curb right next to him, it vanished. She easily slipped her arm around his and the warmth she exuded sent chills down his spine. "What are you doing out here at three in the morning?"
He loved the sound of her voice when she was half awake. Raspy was cute on her.
"Thinking."
Noora tilted her head back to get a good look at his face, the worry lines evident in his forehead.
"You couldn't do it in bed?" she questioned. "I hate it when I can't feel you next to me." In an attempt to comfort him, Noora tugged him as close to her as she could manage.
William's expression turned warm, "It must be utterly devastating."
Noora nipped his earlobe with her teeth teasingly, "Only on the days Chris isn't available. We're finally at the point in our relationship where I'm accepting his offer on the threesome."
William scoffed his breath, "Over my dead body."
Noora smiled sickeningly sweet at the boy beside her, "That can be arranged, Wilhelm."
William leaned over giving her a kiss on her forehead, "You're lucky I love you."
Despite the sleepiness in her eyes, she managed to give him the most god damn beautiful smile he's always grateful to see, "I love you too, but you better give me a real kiss."
"Your wish is my command."
He made it agonizingly slow. Dragging his lips along her jawline, peppering kisses on her chin and around her lips. William's right hand cupped Noora's cheek, finally bringing his lips to hers.
They sat in silence after that.
Eventually, one of them had to surrender. Neither of them wanted to ruin the moment. The reality of the situation was that William was out here for a reason. No amount of banter would make that go away.
So Noora broke the silence, "Do you want to talk about what's bothering you?"
Blissful moment over.
William considered just pushing it aside, working through it on his own, but Noora would see right through him. Sometimes he misses the day he was a mystery to her.
"I'm just having a hard time compartmentalizing everything."
Confusion washed over her, 'What do you mean?"
William sighed, "Starting over. Spending that month depending on you in a way I shouldn't have to. Accepting my position at work." Does my father even care about how I'm surviving?
He doesn't say that out loud.
"Listen to me, William Magnusson. Everyone in their life has to make hard decisions and you should be proud of yourself for what you have accomplished. Not everyone can be as strong as you have been. You may not see it, but everyone else does. I do."
"My father has made me feel like I've been a burden my whole life. I don't want to become one to you." he admitted.
Noora looked him straight in the eyes, her gaze steady and strong, "You have always taken care of me and now its my turn. You have to let me do that for you."
"I just want to be the best man I can be for you because its what you deserve. Not a man who is one step away from falling apart."
"Acknowledging that you aren't okay is a step in the right direction."
"You think so?" This was new to William. The constant questioning of every distinct moment currently happening in his life.
Noora nodded, "I know so. Everything can only get better from here."
**
Chris has taken romantic gestures to a whole new level.
It's one thing to wake up to breakfast in bed, but a whole other thing to wake up to a huge feast surrounded by rose petals.
The intense floral smell was too distinct for her to ignore and go back to sleep.
Eva pulls herself up into sitting position to find herself the only one in bed. The last she remembers, Chris was in bed next to her holding her tightly. Just the way she liked. It always made her feel so safe - so wanted.
This side of Chris was different. She admired it.
Here's the kicker, not everything about him has changed. He's not one to pull something of this caliber and not stay for the show.
"Paint me like one of your french boys, Eva." Chris teases flipping the spare blanket open to flash his goods from where's he laying on her lounge.
"Fuck, Chris." Eva laughs clutching her chest. "You scared me."
"You're welcome." He was so proud of himself. Eva bets he's giving himself mental pats on the shoulders for being so brilliant.
"Do you like it?" Chris asks, smiling so wide it reminds her of a kid in a candy shop.
Eva shrugs her bare shoulders, "You know I can't answer that. I haven't tried it yet." She doesn't add in the part that everything he's ever made her has been delicious. She can't afford to feed his ego farther.
She appreciates it all. Who doesn't like to get pampered in this fashion? The effort he's been putting in hasn't gone unnoticed.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" he asks.
"For you to feed it to me." Eva quips back grabbing the fork and knife ready to pick at the blueberry pancakes.
"What if you just have me for breakfast instead?" Chris asks suggestively making Eva drop the fork onto the tray.
She looks up to look at him and there's nothing about him that's joking.
Well damn. How do you say no to that?

**THE SHOW MUST GO ON**
Cue mandatory WFH Week Dos. 😷😷
Hey all you cool cats and kittens. I really hope everyone is safe and sound and sheltering in place!!
Spring 2020 internships at my job are ending 3 weeks early, so this is my last week as the merchandising intern :( I totally understand the need to prioritize the business in such uncertain times, and I am so grateful to have been given such an amazing opportunity with such an incredible company!! Even though my time as a merch intern has come to an end (for now!!), I decided to see this blog through and show you guys outfits I would’ve worn to the office! I don’t mind playing dress up while being cooped up inside anyway :) Happy viewing, xo.
This week, I want to feature this loud and proud red cheetah jumpsuit.  I bought it awhile back when Charolette Russe was liquidating and going out of business - R.I.P. I had no idea where I would wear it to, but it was such a hit at the office!  This jumpsuit is such a conversation piece and can easily be transformed into business casual.  My only regret is that I did not try it on, so it’s a tad snug and doesn’t have too much give to compensate.  No matter - it’s still a showstopper! This baby is 100% polyester and is made to fit slim on the torso with a straight leg.  It comes with a skinny elastic belt with a gold plate, but I went for double edge and added my 🐍 belt.
Outfit Details:
Chunky Gold Teardrop Hoops:  Sugarfix for Target, $9.99.
Red Cheetah Strapless Jumpsuit:  Charolette Russe, *on liquidation 20% sale* for $26.99. Aforementioned belt included.
Black Tailored Jacket:  H&M, $34.99.  See his Houndstooth friends here: https://forgetmeknot.tumblr.com/post/190537986555/the-power-suit-this-suit-is-so-flattering-and
And matching ankle slacks here: https://forgetmeknot.tumblr.com/post/190538308980/cheetahlicious-my-mum-and-i-went-shopping-a
Gold Snake Belt:  Express, $39.99. I bought its silver friend too - stay tuned ;)
Black Soft Leather Mules:  Steve Madden, but I found them on Burlington’s clearance rack, $17.99🔥🔥
**Don’t forget to social distance!!!

Ralph Lauren once said, "I don't design clothes, I design dreams," according to GQ magazine. But at retail, clothes have become the stuff of nightmares.
"According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 1977 U.S. Households spent 6.2% on apparel and in 2017 that declined to 3.1% spending on apparel in U.S. Households," Shawn Grain Carter, professor of fashion business management at the Fashion Institute of Technology, told Retail Dive in an email. "That is a 50% drop over four decades."
And it's taking a toll.
Oct 23 - Register Now So far this year, 10 of the 16 major retail bankruptcies were filed by companies that mostly or exclusively sell apparel and/or footwear: Forever 21, Avenue, A'gaci, Barneys New York, Charming Charlie, Diesel USA, Payless ShoeSource, FullBeauty Brands, Charlotte Russe and Gymboree. Another, Shopko, was a discount department store with an assortment that included clothes.
Things are not likely to end there. In its latest analysis of CreditRiskMonitor data, Retail Dive found 28 retailers that could go bankrupt in the next year — and half sell apparel. In the worse-off list, which includes businesses with a 9.99% to 50% chance of filing for bankruptcy (a FRISK score of 1) — three are specialty apparel retailers: Christopher & Banks, Destination Maternity and J. Crew. A fourth, Ascena, is a conglomerate running five apparel brands after recently dumping two. It's reportedly contemplating also dropping its plus-size brands. Executives there recently assured analysts that bankruptcy is not a consideration, however.
In addition to those retailers, department stores J.C. Penney and Neiman Marcus also make the list. A seventh, Bluestem, is also a conglomerate with a portfolio of e-commerce brands somewhat less dominated by apparel.
Seven more apparel retailers have a 4% to 9.99% chance of filing for bankruptcy (a FRISK score of 2). They include RTW Retailwinds (a portfolio of brands formerly known as New York & Co), Tailored Brands (which runs Men's Wearhouse and JoS. A. Bank), Express, Francesca's and J. Jill, plus department stores Hudson's Bay Co. and Stein Mart.
"It is unsurprising that apparel stores are one of the most distressed parts of retail. This sector is saturated with supply and is arguably over-stored."
Neil Saunders
Managing Director, GlobalData Retail
The situation is at once stark and logical, considering the state of the market. Globally, the top dozen apparel retailers, on average, saw earnings downgrades of nearly 40% since 2016, according to a note from Morgan Stanley Friday, where analysts said the "online channel shift is clearly unhelpful, but it doesn't fully explain the malaise." For two decades, falling apparel prices were offset by growing volumes, but those "now seem to have peaked and prices are likely to keep falling, so clothing markets would appear to be going into structural decline."
Apparel retail, which has to keep up with the fickleness of consumer taste, has long been a tough business, according to GlobalData Retail Managing Director Neil Saunders. But that's just the beginning.
"It is unsurprising that apparel stores are one of the most distressed parts of retail. This sector is saturated with supply and is arguably over-stored," he told Retail Dive in an email. "Online has been unhelpful too as it has eroded margins somewhat and has also contributed to the issues of over-supply. On the periphery there are a number of emerging trends which are adding pressure, including the rise of rental and resale – both of which are mostly focused on clothing. Put all of this together and it's a recipe for a difficult sector."
In other words: Apparel retail is under siege on multiple fronts.
New consumer priorities Financial roadbumps stymying consumers outside of top-tier incomes are forcing some to prioritize, and that's pushing apparel far down on many lists. Average spending on women and girls' apparel has especially declined for lower-income earners, with the "only bright spot" in footwear, where share in apparel expenditure has risen across income levels, according to a Deloitte report last year. More recently, rising consumer debt, including record levels of student loans shouldered by younger consumers, is chipping away at discretionary spending.
But apparel spending declines are broad-based as priorities shift, according to Carter and others. "Apparel has lost market share to higher spending on experiences," she said, including a diverse set of activities like fitness, self-care like spas and manicures, sports (both participation and entertainment), other entertainment including streaming services of all types, restaurants, travel and electronics.
"The Boomers characteristically consume less apparel as they get older and their offspring are burdened with crushing student loan debt, generally rising prices in the consumer space and a very glaring lack of new and interesting apparel and accessory products."
Mark Cohen
Retail Studies Professor, Columbia University Business School
Mark Cohen, Columbia University Business School retail studies professor, likewise believes that "consumer electronics and the services that go with them with regard to ever more consuming technology continues to eat up the consumer's available disposable income," but notes other forces at play.
"The Boomers characteristically consume less apparel as they get older and their offspring are burdened with crushing student loan debt, generally rising prices in the consumer space and a very glaring lack of new and interesting apparel and accessory products to draw their attention," he told Retail Dive in an email. "Some appear to be gob smacked with the opportunity to 'rent' things rather than buy them — though this trend may very well turn out to be short lived just like the ubiquitous Gilt Flash Sale."
For younger shoppers, as they choose which apparel brands do get their attention, sustainability and other cultural issues are often at the forefront, according to Carter. Forever 21, for one, in contrast to at least nominal efforts by rival H&M, ignored that, to its peril, Carter said.
No fashion heroes The "glaring lack" of newness noticed by Cohen could be a reflection of a new fashion reality — that consumers themselves are dictating what to wear, gleaning clues from social media and seeking advice from influencers there who include their own friends.
"The tastemakers of fashion used to be the designer, fashion editor, fashion buyer and celebrity," said FIT's Carter. "Today, however, social media influencers, peers, and stylists have replaced the role of fashion sages for consumers to purchase apparel, footwear, and accessories. Instagram, YouTube and other social media platforms dictate how one should dress for Gen Z and Millennials. Besides, they don't shop in a mall or socialize in retail stores as did previous generations of youth."
"To be a merchant right now in apparel, that's a hard job. To work at The RealReal is so much easier than turning around J. Crew."
Lee Peterson
EVP, Thought Leadership & Marketing, WD Partners
That grassroots approach to fashion is making it difficult for merchandisers, at least those building seasonal lines from scratch, according to Lee Peterson, executive vice president of thought leadership and marketing at WD Partners. Resale businesses like ThredUp and The RealReal are better positioned than traditional retailers because of the way consumers mix and match styles, brands and price points, he said in an interview.
"You can't merchandise the way the customers buy now. I feel sorry for anyone working for Ascena and those guys putting together a line," he said. "To be a merchant right now in apparel, that's a hard job. To work at The RealReal is so much easier than turning around J. Crew. And to be a buyer there is easier, too, because you're treasure hunting for all your treasure-hunting customers."
Another reality pressuring sales is that nobody needs as many clothes as they once did, say Carter and Peterson. Peterson noted that, even as an executive, he was wearing a flannel shirt and Vans on a Thursday.
"No 'career wear' or business wardrobe is necessary anymore since the beginning of the 1990s era of 'Friday Casual' morphed into everyday 'Business Casual' at the majority of companies, schools, service industries and banks in America," Carter said. "One need only trace the rise of wearing sneakers to one's office, college, opera house, theater, church or temple to see that consumers see no value in 'dressing for work' vs. dressing for leisure. Even Goldman Sachs has suspended the Tie and Suit rule once and for all!"
Too much supply So, consumers can't spend as much on apparel as they once did, would rather buy other things and don't need as many clothes. Yet there's a glut of apparel for sale, and, increasingly, for rent.
"Thirty years ago the apparel and related accessories business were booming. The department stores couldn't wait to jettison lesser margin businesses like housewares, home and electronics so as to devote more selling space to soft lines," Columbia's Cohen said. "But apparel and accessories like most individual consumer segments are cyclical in the way they perform. What was the ever rising tide is no longer."
It doesn't help that the traditional mall, which functioned well for suburban Americans for decades, is now a fairly inconvenient way to shop in an era when most households need two wage-earners, both pressed for time, and when so many things can be bought online. That's leading retailers as diverse as Gap and GNC to leave those locations to set up shop in strip malls and invest in e-commerce instead.
"Now the remaining department stores have too many physical stores in the face of the explosion of commerce and too much square footage devoted to off-trend apparel and accessories," said Cohen, who has decades of experience at retailers like Sears and Target. "Some of us balked at this short-sighted thinking of the past but we lost the argument and now the chickens have come home to roost. There obviously was a ridiculous over-investment in apparel and accessory specialty retail, largely based upon an increasingly large number of now superfluous malls."
Macy's is exhibit one, as a retailer that has scrambled in recent years to unwind its massive brick-and-mortar expansion of more than a decade ago, but it's not just a department store problem. Forever 21 also over-built its fleet, too often in sub-standard centers, and now plans to close 178 stores in the U.S. alone.
A giant retreat While it's easy to see how e-commerce undercuts store traffic and sales, the apparel over-supply extends online. In fact, Walmart's recent loss of appetite for running its newly acquired pure-players could have something to do with the fact that they are apparel businesses. In a stunning retreat, the retail giant sold its ModCloth apparel brand and is reportedly shrinking the Bonobos menswear operation, not long after buying them.
"Against this backdrop, Walmart will be cautious about getting too deeply into apparel. At heart, Walmart isn't a fashion focused player; their primary business model is a volume play based on everyday products sold at low prices," Saunders said. "As such, the company has determined that ModCloth, and possibly Bonobos, are not a good long-term fit. This is especially so given the challenge of bringing these divisions into strong profitable territory."
Walmart in recent years grabbed those businesses, along with outdoor apparel retailer Moosejaw, to glean knowledge and is likely now ready to graduate, according to Saunders.
"Having extracted what they needed, Walmart is changing tack and is focusing more on their core e-commerce business via Walmart.com," he said. "Walmart sees its future in fashion as improving its own offer via stores and online, doing selective things in specialist areas like plus size, and partnering with other brands via its marketplace. That makes sense as it allows Walmart.com to widen its fashion appeal without Walmart taking on too much of the risk. It's a nimbler and likely more profitable model."
More nimble and more profitable: suitable, if difficult, goals for the entire apparel industry at the moment.

How to Stay Colorful in the Winter: 5 Outfits That Incorporate Cheerful Yellow
Yellow is one of the happiest colors in the world, and it's a great way to liven up your winter wardrobe.
Yellow has been a popular fashion color for the past few seasons and a perennial favorite for the warmer months. While the color is seen as cheery, upbeat, and the definition of a hot summer day, yellow can still be a killer winter shade. In fact, adding a pop of sunny yellow to your winter wardrobe might be just what you need to get through the rest of the chilly season.
Let's take a look at a few options and how you can brighten up your life by wearing yellow in winter!
Cozy and Sweet Sweater
With just three pieces of clothing that you might already have in your closet, this yellow look will brighten up anyone’s day! With a classic pair of white jeans to draw an even bigger focus to the color and texture of the sweater, this look is comfortable, versatile, and winter-ready. (Yes, you can wear white jeans in winter!!)
Products: Shoes - Aldo, Sweater - Zaful, Jeans - Nordstrom Rack
To recreate this look, take your white skinny jeans and pair them with a black boot. Whether the boot is heeled or flat, tall or cropped, zip-up or pull-on, any black boot will work with this look. Of course, the bold sweater is the key to this ensemble, and finding one in a bold and bright shade of yellow is easy to do. I like this sweater because of the cropped wrist hem and the neckline, which I find to be flattering in sweaters. This look could be worn to class, a meeting, or a fun winter dinner party.
Cher Confidence
In this Cher Horowitz-inspired look, we found a top and bottom set in a bumblebee yellow plaid pattern, and talk about a confidence boost! This mock-suit is fashionable and chic, with side buttons and a large blazer. With plaid shades of green thrown into the mix, this eccentric look is the perfect set for getting through the boring and drab days of winter.
Products: Shoes - Macy's, Earrings - Astley Clarke, Set - Fashion Nova
To get this look, find a top and bottom set, preferably in the color yellow, and pair them with a white or light colored top underneath. Play around with buttoning up the blouse, or leaving it open, because it can change the look completely. A tall pair of black boots finishes off the look, as do some gold accessories. This cheery and sassy look can turn the streets into your runway this winter!
Sunny Swinging Dress
Turn that winter frown upside down with this summery yellow dress. With a long skirt and classic button-up blouse top, this dress shouldn’t be kept in the closet all year. Combining the popular shade of mustard yellow with a delicate cream print, this dress will automatically lift your mood when you go out to face the cold.
Products: Shoes - Vans, Dress - Lulus, Jacket - Forever 21
To accessorize this summery dress so it will be winter-appropriate, pair a heavy corduroy/denim jacket in the color of cream (or jean) over top. In addition, any kind of chic sneaker will transform this look. If you can do so, matching the jacket to the shoes helps the print in this dress stand out even more. This look is perfect for a daytime date or a casual dinner with friends.
Ocean and Sand
These pale, almost tan colored yellow boots are the perfect subtle addition to any outfit, in any season.
I love the simplicity of this outfit. The colors work together to draw the eye, and between the shades of blue in the sweater and the light wash and gentle rips of the jeans, this outfit looks relaxed and casual.
Products: Shoes - Charlotte Russe, Jeans - Aerie, Sweater - Zaful
This look is so easy to create, and can easily be switched around to fit your personal preference. Start with a good pair of light-wash jeans, a springtime staple that you can start wearing now. When it comes to picking out the sweater, you have freedom to play around. This tri-colored pattern works in this set to add a little uniqueness to the look, but any blue or purple top would achieve this style. Finally, these adorable little booties are the perfect finishing touch, especially with such a distinctive color and texture.
School Girl Shine
This outfit is a combination of retro and school-girl, thanks to the bright yellow backpack combined with shiny white boots. The black jean pinafore is a look that goes with a lot of outfit options, and is the perfect versatile piece that you can wear throughout this year. One thing I like about this set is how much you can make it yours. You could add a turtleneck or a long-sleeve tee underneath, or maybe colorful tights or leggings to keep your legs warm.
Products: Shoes - DSW, Bag - Campsaver, Pinafore - Zaful
To recreate this look, the pinafore is important. While the bright, lemon-yellow backpack is crucial to following the theme of adding a little sunshine into your life, it’s a simple accessory that can go a long way. After you have any type of pinafore, pair the look with a pair of heeled boots, and whatever color additional clothing you choose -- a white top underneath and some black tights would be very cute, but you could also go colorful with a pop of red for your base layer. Overall, this is a one of a kind look that will set your style apart from the rest this winter.
What do you think?

A Wedding Filled with Whimsy and a Stunning Butterfly Release
Never have I ever come across a wedding quite as dazzling as this Santa Ynez affair. And it makes complete sense when you hear that the gorgeous Bride is none other than the founder of Flutter Magazine. With the help of an insanely talented group of vendors including design by Joy Proctor, florals by Amy Osaba, beauty by TEAM Hair and Makeup and stunning photographs by Jose Villa, this wedding has whimsy at every turn. And just wait until you see the butterfly release. See the full day right here!
From the Bride… Tyson and I met thirteen years ago during the Fall of our freshman year at college in Santa Barbara. I’ll never forget… I watched him step out of a friends car, and just like that, I found myself flustered in attempts to introduce myself. Looking back now, it really was love at first sight. I know it sounds silly, but I don’t think it’s something you really realize until much later reflection, recounting every moment that lead you to where you are, that you understand how truly special that first meeting was.
With a custom gown in mind, I went to LA-based designer Jannina Figueroa of Madeleine Fig to help make something ‘bohemian couture’ complete with a wishlist of fun features: high-low structure, pockets (a must!), illusion layers, and lace. Every detail was handcrafted with love by Jannina and her team. For a little ‘something borrowed,’ we took remnant lace from the dress to make heirloom robes for the wedding party.
I wanted a special gift for my sister, my maid of honor. As I have always adored Sofia Kaman’s bespoke stacking rings, I knew my sister would too. I went to Sofia with my grandmother’s wedding band and she helped me repurpose the stones into matching stacks of gold and rose gold ‘sister rings.’ It was a beautiful way to share such a special family heirloom with my sister. Of course I had to get custom monogrammed “Mrs.” Boxes for us, too!
Jenna Rainey of Monvoir created the prettiest watercolor heraldry that we used within the invitation suite and throughout the wedding. I’m pretty obsessed! The invite had custom watercolor illustrations and was blind embossed with floral. Tied up with ribbon and placed in hand-calligraphed vellum envelopes, it made for some pretty heart-fluttering and colorful snail mail.
If there was one thing our guests could not stop talking about, it was the food! Inspired by our engagement in Tuscany, it was important to me and Tyson to create a really lovely dinner party… One filled will innovative delights and overflowing with wine, champagne, and exquisite service. Our friends at The Kitchen For Exploring Foods mesmerised palates with a Mediterranean-influenced meal served à la russe. With fifty guests, surrounded by enchanting florals, candlelight, and a live jazz quartet under the stars, it was a dream come true dinner.
From the event designer, Joy Proctor… Kim entered the ceremony down stone stairs of the Villa and walked down the aisle which was lined in growing poppies and ranunculus.
Placed at every seat was an antique glass box from La Rousse Shop with two live painted lady butterflies. Susan Silverberg calligraphed hang tags that read ‘At first kiss, release and set your heart aflutter.’ Upon pronouncement, it was the perfect heart-fluttering celebration of our love.
The color palette reflected Kim’s style through and through, with warm watermelon, coral, and sunset tones paired against taupes and creams as a nod to their engagement in Tuscany. To evoke the playful yet elegant aesthetic that Kim is so known for, we used a beautiful watercolor crest designed by Monvoir, complete with florals and butterflies throughout the suite.
Making their way to the reception, guests were invited to find their seating assignments in drawers of an antique dresser which had been filled with moss and flowers.
As a nod to their Italian engagement, Kim and Tyson wanted to share an al fresco dining experience with their guests. To create an intimate environment we built a beautiful structure draped in taupe fabric over two rows of dining tables. Florals and greenery grew up the structure organically, while Tuscan style chandeliers hung down the center. Linen chairs and wooden tables added to the Tuscan feel, while artisanal breads, olive oil, fruits and flowers created for a lush, edible tabletop. Menus personalized with each guests names were placed atop ceramic plates handmade in Europe.

Modest crop top outfits: If there was an epitome of chic fashion, crop tops would definitely be it. Totally rad, chic, trendy and definitely goes with everything. For all the crop top lovers out there, we have something exciting for you in store today.
Crop tops are generally associated with summers when the sun is shining, it is humid outside and you need clothing items that are more chic and rad because this is the time to bring out the Kate Spade in you. While there are a variety of cuts and types of crop tops to choose from, the lose and flowy ones are better for the warmer days as well as for modesty. But, crop tops can be styled for winters too, or spring, for that matter.
How To Wear Crop Tops Modestly
While we’ve already done a very detailed post on 25 Cute Ways to Wear Crop Tops This Season, today it’s all about modest fashion. Down below, we are going to list down a number of ways to style your crop top modestly. Because we understand that for all the modest fashion lovers and hijabis, it sometimes gets difficult to choose from a range of clothing items that will adequately cover their body and look trendy as well. And for non-hijabis who do not want to show skin while wearing a crop top we have got you covered too – quite literally there, scroll down and see for yourself lovelies.
But before we get into the collection, here are some tips for how to style our crop top modestly:
Go high waisted for the bottoms, as it will provide you more coverage.
Crop tops can be the most versatile clothing item with a little layering so don’t be afraid to experiment.
If layering over is not your thing, you can always layer under a crop top and get the job done.
Overalls can work perfectly fine over crop tops as well.
Low ponytails or messy buns are good substitute hairstyle for summer to wear with crop tops.
So now that that’s done, let’s get to the crop top attire ideas which you all have been surfing the internet for.
↓ 15 – Wedding Ready
Crop tops with long maxi skirts look great as wedding guest outfits.
For a more ethnic look, you can also opt for a fancy lehnga instead of a skirt, perfect for the desi weddings.
↓ 14 – Wear It With a Kimono
Aren’t kimonos the best layering item ever made? They’re available in such fun prints and colors these days and you can easily turn any outfit into a modest one by wearing a kimono. If you like this look, you’ll definitely love these 20 Ways To Dress Up With Kimono Outfits.
↓ 13 – With A Flowy High Waisted Skirt
As already mentioned, one of the best ways to style crop top modestly is going high waisted. Because we understand your love for crop tops, but we also understand that you can’t all go to school or work flaunting your waist. So the best option is to go high waisted with the bottoms, up to the length which will meet your crop top length half way. A flowy, floral high waisted skirt, like the one shown in the picture here, would be the best option to wear with a crop top and make it look work-appropriate. Yes, you can wear crop tops to work, events, meetings or to class, it is not something that is confined to parties and concerts for teenagers. You should just know how to style it properly, one of which is going high waisted. This high-waisted skirt is a very flattering cut suited just below the knotted crop top. You can even wear an undershirt beneath the crop top to make sure your skin is not revealed when you lift your arms. Or if you have a curvy figure which shy’s you away from wearing crop tops, this knotted in front crop top can help as well.

↓ – 12 – With High Waisted Jeans
Summers are already here but the summer body is not? Don’t you worry, we have got a perfect cover for hiding all the Nutella and McDonald’s beneath that shirt. I know how frustrating it can get when looking for summer clothes which will cover your body modestly while you don’t have to worry about all the junk you have stuffed yourself with over the winter. The answer is high waisted jeans! Yes, high waisted jeans will cover your tummy all the way up to the short body crop top and you won’t have to feel conscious about any of your choices. Crop tops cannot be skipped this season, as they are everywhere to be seen. Throw on high waisted jeans and you can enjoy a crop top without worrying about the bulky belly. This flowy, perfectly summer appropriated cute top is from forever 21 and the high waisted lower is from Charlotte Russe. Find the right match of your crop top and cute high waisted jeans and the world is yours to conquer, ladies. For all the people wondering how to wear crop tops without showing your stomach, here is the idea of how to.

↓ – 11 – With Harem Pants
How to wear a crop top to make it look classy, you ask? Here is an idea for you. For a day at the office or a meeting, you can pair your crop top with harem pants and it will definitely make up for a full trendy outfit. As harem pants are all you can see on the racks these days as soon as you get into a store, our luck they look the best with crop tops. This look with a white loose crop top and harem pants are totally work appropriate with some cute heels and a rad hand clutch, you are good to go. This crop top is comparatively a longer one which looks best either tucked in a little or only from the front.
Via
↓ – 10 – With Wide-leg Pants
Another way to use the crop top to make a decent outfit is to pair it with straight, may be folded on the bottom pants. Straight pants, harem pants, palazzo, wide-leg pants, jeans or mom jeans and other clothing items from the same family are a perfect fit for an office look. This look right here is a black and white contrasting attire with white wide-leg pants and a black sleeveless, high neck crop top which looks easy to carry, wear, find in your wardrobe and ultra simple but yet modest and office appropriate. Pair them with pure white flats and it is a full match. Wide-leg pants and crop tops are made for each other, I like to believe. And if you enjoy wearing them as much as we do, don’t miss out this post on How to Wear White Wide Leg Pants.

↓ – 09 – With Straight Pants
Another addition to the classy look-book would be the famous and ever loved straight pants. High waisted straight pants, I believe, is such a versatile clothing item it can go with anything, a T-shirt, crop tops, fancy silk tops or a flowy fancy top. Pair these black straight pants with a simple, long-sleeved top and maybe a statement necklace to add some character to the entire outfit, and you are office ready wonder women. You can not go more covered and trendy than this I believe. It is a perfect modest yet stylish outfit for the office. Crop tops are clothing items that can be played around with anything, for any occasion.

↓ 08 -With Bell Bottom Pants
How do we not talk about bell bottom when we are talking about the 90’s fashion coming back? There isn’t a way we don’t. As the 90’s fashion is gradually coming back to style, with mom jeans, bell bottoms and straight pants, it is almost necessary to contribute your style to this great cause, because who hated the 90’s? Nothing vibes the 90’s more than bell bottoms. For an elegant brunch with your work colleagues or your friends or a meeting, nothing better than pairing your high waisted bell bottoms with a simple black crop top like shown in this attire picture. We would suggest you choose a bold colour for your lowers when you are pairing them with white or black crop tops. Add some hoops to the look, a statement neck piece and you are good to go.

↓ 07 – With Palazzos For A Comfortable Look
If you are looking for a crop top outfit which is in the circles of modesty, is trendy, looks chic and road style fashion but one which you can wear to office or school both, then this is the outfit for you. Crop tops and palazzos are a love story better than Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, and we love it the same. Either it is a 2 piece crop top and palazzo suit or a plain crop top paired with a plain palazzo, it looks the best either way and has been seen worn by celebrities, models, girls at Coachella and basically everyone. This outfit in the picture can be worn to the office, to class or on a day when you have to rush to lunch with your girls right after office or class, wear your hair down, put on a little lipstick and you are lunch ready. High waisted palazzos are better to wear with crop tops as they cover the upper abdomen part properly and shows no tummy. A printed scarf around the neck will make up for the best modest crop top outfit. Here are some more awesome Ways to Wear Palazzo Pants with other Outfits.

↓ 06 – Work-Appropriate
How about trying something different this year and wearing a crop top (instead of a shirt or blouse) with your two-piece suit!
↓ 05 – Wear Crop Tops With Class In Your 40s
Want to fit in the crop top trend but feel like you are too old for it? Don’t worry, you are never too old for any fashion, you just have to turn the style your way and you can wear the crop tops and look classy even in your 40s. The key is to choose crop tops which are longer and cover your upper abdomen or wear high waisted bottoms, which always saves the day with crop tops. You can wear full belly covering crop tops with straight jeans, straight pants, wide-legged trousers or mom jeans and make the trend look your age. You don’t have to worry about losing weight and bringing back the abs in your 40s as you can always turn the fashion your way. Our favorite over 40 fashion blogger, Samantha, has done a very interesting post on wearing crop tops in your 40s and we highly recommend that you check it out. And for more ideas on outfits, here’s our earlier post on 20 Dressing Styles for 40 Plus Women.
↓ 04 – Wearing Crop Tops In Your Teens & The Twenties
The best age group that can carry the 90s crop top trend with ease are the people of the 20s age group. When showing skin too much or not isn’t much of a deal and they can fit into any new trend with ease. The best way to pair a crop top in your teenage years is with a high-waisted skin fitted jeans like shown in this attire picture, being a teenager myself this style is my favourite. A crop top over high waisted skin fitted jeans and some high boots and a side bag, this is all you need for a day at work or going to class in cold days. The high waisted jeans cover up to the crop top, as mentioned already, which is perfect for girls who want to keep their modesty in check. A lot of influencers and celebrities have been seen wearing the crop sweaters and crop tops lately.
The Canadian fashion diva Laiba Zaid or else known as Bodmon Zaid loves flaunting in crop tops modestly. You can follow her account for more inspiration.
↓ 03 – Wear Crop Tops Modestly With Hijab
Yes, you can even wear crop tops with hijab, that’s how versatile this clothing item can get. You can pair straight trousers with a simple white crop top, throw over a scarf around your neck or wear a turban style hijab, the options are endless. The best fit for a day at the office or to class, perfectly trendy and modest. We’re sharing below some of our favorite crop top outfits with hijab:

↓ 02 – Layering Under Your Crop Tops
Like a strappy crop top at the store and can’t wear it because of modesty? Try layering under it! Throw the crop top over a white button down blouse and you are ready with the ramp style fashion for every day. If you need some layering tips, check out 27 Ways to Layer Your Clothes like Pro.
A lot of people have been seeking answers to what to wear under a crop top and what works fine with it, so here is a style for all of you who have no answers to what works best under a crop top. Camisole, T-shirts, tank tops or fitted white button-down blouses would work just fine under a crop top to cover the skin fully.
Via
Another really cool option is to wear any long dress under the crop top, this works particularly well for lace crop tops:
↓ 01 – Layering Over Your Crop Top
The chicest and trendiest way to wear a crop top is to pair it with denim overalls and red heels to add some colour to the outfit like shown in this outfit picture right here. You can wear a tank top under the crop top so that the side skin under the overalls, beneath the crop top.
Via
Instead of overalls, you can also wear a jumpsuit over your crop tops, a great way to wear your jumpsuits modestly too without feeling bulky with layering.

The 31 best dance scenes in movies
Updated 4 hours ago
What do dance scenes add to a movie? Unspeakable bliss, for starters. Dancing starts when dialogue fails. When lovers need to move beyond conversation, when conflicts boil past negotiation, when joy can’t be expressed in any other way than by leaping into the air on a trumpeter’s high note.
With the rise of movie musicals in the early part of the 20th century, dancing moved easily from stage to screen, becoming bigger, more potent, ever more spectacular — and a lasting love affair with the moviegoing public was born. It’s still going on: Witness the mainstream success of “La La Land,” a film in the golden age mold.
Taking stock of film’s dance treasury to pick the paragons was an irresistible challenge. In making my choices for the best dance scenes, I looked at several factors: mastery of technique, imaginative choreography, quality of the music — this is very important — and design and storytelling. I value authentic expression more than dance doubles and tricky editing. But, in the final analysis, transcendence won out. Does the dancing carry me away, give me chills, distill some truth about the human experience? Whether it’s a masterpiece of steps and skill, or an intentionally funny, hot mess, or a dreamscape that’s intriguingly weird — dancing that moves you is great dancing.
I also had to set some rules for this list: I considered specific dance scenes, not the quality of entire movies. I didn’t include documentaries or foreign films; no “Pina,” no “Mad Hot Ballroom.” With matchless artists in movement, music and choreography, the 1940s and ’50s dominate my choices, but even those aren’t exhaustive. I settled on the era’s best and moved on. I handicapped Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, limiting them to just one dance (it’s my No. 1, the best of the best) from all the jewels in their 10 films together, because if I didn’t, they’d eat the list. Our vast cinematic history is studded with marvelous dancing, but one has to draw the line somewhere.
youtube
1. ‘Swing Time’ (1936), ‘Never Gonna Dance’ scene
There are no greater dance musicals than the ones Fred and Ginger made together, because they accomplished so much, so beautifully. Their dances are artistic, emotional and inventive; the music is superb (Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin); the costuming and set design create a stylistic whole. And they aren’t mere interludes. What Astaire and Rogers communicate through dance deepens the story. To pick the pinnacle among their 10 films isn’t easy, but my choice is their final waltz in “Swing Time.” Why? Because we’ll think of Astaire and Rogers forever as a unit, falling in love on the dance floor, and this dance expresses something profound about their bond. It’s about the perils of breaking it. They begin by simply walking together; their mood is blue, but the sexual tension is red hot. Through a precise mirroring of movements, Rogers shows Astaire the kind of intimate soul mate he’ll lose if he doesn’t ‘fess up about his feelings. Astaire senses this and grows desperate. He spins her around dizzily, her dress whipping like a flag at sea. Then the cliffhanger: She whirls out the door, leaving him, and us, bereft – and dying to see how the movie ends.
youtube
2. ‘Stormy Weather’ (1943), ‘Jumpin’ Jive’
Fayard and Harold Nicholas, aka the Nicholas Brothers, were a pair of miracles in tap shoes. They hoofed their way from the Cotton Club to Hollywood, where their fans included Astaire, Gene Kelly and other dance greats who marveled at their skill, daring and sheer brilliance. This scene is the consummate joy-fest: They dart through Cab Calloway’s orchestra, skate atop the drums and piano, and end it all by plunging down a flight of stairs, leapfrogging buoyantly over each other to land in the splits, and then springing up to do it all again. They shot it all in one take.
youtube
3. ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ (1952), title number
Is there any more beloved dance scene on film than Gene Kelly’s inspired splashfest? This is the dance anthem for that inescapable experience of a thorough cosmic drenching. The answer: Enjoy it! Spin through puddles, gambol in the gutters, play a brass band in your head, and soak up every drop. Kelly was constantly experimenting, and although he whipped up more technically dazzling numbers in other movies, none is more uplifting or enduring than this one.
youtube
4. ‘An American in Paris’ (1951), final ballet
Kelly lured Leslie Caron from France especially for this movie and its climactic, 17-minute dreamscape of a ballet. The scene took a month to film. Its lush, Technicolor intensity has never been matched, and the dancing, which sweeps through paintings come to life, Parisian flower markets and moonlit fountains, feels like the very embodiment of postwar optimism. But the chemistry between its stars, accompanied by Gershwin’s sexy jazz: explosif.

5. ‘Ship Ahoy’ (1942), ‘I’ll Take Tallulah’
I once asked Fayard Nicholas (see No. 2) to name his favorite female dancer. His answer: Eleanor Powell. It’s easy to see why. Powell is arguably the greatest tap dancer on film, male or female, and in this number, she has the spotlight all to herself (after Bert Lahr serenades her). Three things distinguish this scene: Powell’s punchy, rascally athleticism, the musical star power of Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra, and the imaginative way Powell taps around the poolside set. She trades drum licks with jazz virtuoso Buddy Rich, hops on tables, swan-dives into an ocean of men, swings on a rope, cartwheels and catches flying rings and, still spinning, seizes airborne drumsticks and rejoins Rich to hammer out a scintillating flourish.
youtube
6. ‘Broadway Melody of 1940’ (1940), ‘Begin the Beguine’
Cole Porter, Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell: the holy trinity of tap. I love the full-body, freewheeling spirit of this amazing duet – it’s a marvel of precision, with hints of friendly competition. Astaire and Powell chase, tease and one-up each other, ending in a synchronized storm of turns that sends them spiraling around each other like crazy spinning nickels in a tilted universe. How can two humans move so fast, in perfect time, with such giddy ease?
youtube
7. ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ (1954), ‘Barn Dance’
Michael Kidd’s exceptional choreography is full of earthy vigor and references to reels, logging and barn-raising. High-pitched and unusually athletic, the dancing moves from an outdoor stage to picnic tables to wood beams. There are backflips and diving somersaults, along with polka steps and lifts. The dancers include Tommy Rall, one of cinema’s greats, ballet star Jacques d’Amboise and Russ Tamblyn, the former gymnast about seven years shy of stardom as Riff in the movie of “West Side Story.”
youtube
8. ‘Small Town Girl’ (1953), ‘I’ve Gotta Hear That Beat’
Ann Miller was considered the queen of Hollywood tap dancers: She was tall, gorgeous and insanely fast. Her taps were like machine-gun fire. This scene, directed by Busby Berkeley and choreographed by Willie Covan, is her most famous. Miller, sequined and sparkly, whirls through an assortment of disembodied musical instruments; violins and trumpets in the hands of unseen players pop up through the floor. Spinning madly, she somehow avoids ricocheting off the trombones. It’s a tribute to Miller as the consummate musician – her tapping is a symphony unto itself – and the scene’s ingenious design, while visually striking, allows nothing to distract from her brilliance.
youtube
9. ‘West Side Story’ (1961), ‘America’
Rita Moreno and George Chakiris are a combustible couple, taunting and teasing each other through Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics and Leonard Bernstein’s music. But once they start dancing, their sexual energy could light up the city. Great dance fills this entire movie, but this scene stands out for the neat layering of Latin motifs – bullfighting, flamenco, mambo – and the exuberant staging of a gender war. There’s also well-earned fury: In lyrics and physical expression, the characters directly engage with the clash of cultures and racism that will undo them all.
youtube
10. ‘Saturday Night Fever’ (1977), ‘More Than a Woman’
This is not the trickiest dance from a technical point of view. You and I could pick it up in a snap. (Simple is good.) But John Travolta turns it into erotic gold. This scene rates among the greats for the spell it casts, far surpassing its modest mechanics. Plenty of other movies’ dance scenes are more complicated, more expertly executed, but this one is unusually immersive — I’m swept into a fever dream of feeling. Strutting like a show pony in his polyester suit and platform shoes, Travolta communicates the intent behind his smoothly syncopated steps and slow dips with co-star Karen Lynn Gorney; they’re a disco-driven lead-in to lovemaking. The dynamic tension is perfect – he revels in his own charisma, she looks at him in misty disbelief, like he’s her fantasy come to life. (For many of us, he was.) Filming wasn’t easy. So much heat and smoke filled that Brooklyn nightclub that at one point, Travolta was on oxygen. Installing lights in the floor, to flash along with the Bee Gees’ music, cost a fortune. It was worth it.
youtube
11. ‘All That Jazz’ (1979), ‘Take Off With Us’
Of course, Bob Fosse’s semi-autobiographical film contains his own snappy, sultry choreography. In this scene, cast members rehearse a flight-attendant-themed number for a Broadway show. What I love about it is not only the dancing — full of Fosse hallmarks, the tight little steps, the hats, the tense sexiness and exquisite control — but also the spot-on depiction of what rehearsals are like. The nearly naked performers sing and shimmy their hearts out, while the creative team watches impassively, smoking, frowning, scribbling criticisms. It’s show business, baby.
youtube
12. ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ (1953), ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’
That hot-pink dress, that cherry-red backdrop, those long, long gloves. Marilyn Monroe is glamorous perfection in this scene, choreographed by the great Jack Cole. He brilliantly played up her strengths, focusing on those beautiful bare shoulders with a shimmy here, an arm extension there, a lot of shaking and — whoopee! — a well-timed gesture to her back porch. Restrained in vocabulary and uninhibited in style and spirit, this witty dance is an exuberant celebration of the female assets, performed by one of the most vibrant bodies in cinematic history.
youtube
13. ‘The Band Wagon’ (1953), ‘Dancing in the Dark’
Cyd Charisse was tall for Fred Astaire, so she’s wearing flats here, the perfect footwear for a waltz of seduction that begins with these two extraordinary movers simply strolling through Central Park. Michael Kidd’s choreography is fascinating; it unspools in an expanding array of spirals, zigzagging lines and sharp changes of direction, sending the couple over benches, up steps and, finally, into a horse-drawn carriage. Astaire and Charisse sail through the complex geometry, each move flowing into the next, as though it were all just a walk in the park.
youtube
14. ‘Sweet Charity’ (1969), ‘The Aloof, the Heavyweight, the Big Finish’
“We don’t dance,” snarls one of the partners-for-hire in this film’s sleazy ballroom. “We defend ourselves to music.” You feel that bite in an irresistible, decadent floor-show extravaganza of ’60s go-go, choreographed by Fosse, the master of sinister sexiness. The starring attractions: dancers Suzanne Charney and a young Ben Vereen. Also, loads of eyeliner, minidresses and those Fosse-licious broken-doll struts, isolated joints and hips, hips, hips.
youtube
15. ‘The Red Shoes,’ (1948), ballet sequence
Within this masterful film, about the flaming passions of artists, lies a complete ballet that echoes the theme and foreshadows its tragic conclusion. The ballet tells the Hans Christian Andersen tale of enchanted shoes that dance their wearer to death; redhead ballerina Moira Shearer is their beguiling victim. Beautifully lighted and designed, this dark, wordless drama is by turns hallucinatory and Hitchcockian.
youtube
16. ‘Dirty Dancing’ (1987), final dance
For many of us of a certain age, this is the defining movie dance scene, as Patrick Swayze struts onto that Borscht Belt stage, and Jennifer Grey melts in his arms. It’s a singularly potent concoction: Swayze’s erotic beauty, Grey’s coming-of-age right before our eyes, the lusty grace of their moves, the crowd’s collective swoon. Because it happens in a middle-class family setting, with actors who weren’t yet icons, we can see ourselves in them, and fly along with them, at least in our minds. It’s a vicarious rush.
youtube
17. ‘Damn Yankees’ (1958), ‘Whatever Lola Wants’
Gwen Verdon as a leggy demon sent by Satan to seduce a ballplayer – OK, I’m in. Verdon, a singing, dancing, acting wizard of stage and screen, had a unique, commanding presence; although delicately built, she vibrated exactitude and authority. She’s funny, sexy and gleefully impish in this scene, choreographed by Fosse, who was soon to be her husband. Every step conveys that she’s a nonhuman in a new role and loving it. Verdon stays in this complicated character throughout her awkward-on-purpose striptease and a manic romp touched with flamenco, burlesque and quasi-Indian fillips. “I’m irresistible, you fool,” she taunts. Um, yes.
youtube
18. ‘All of Me’ (1984), closing scene
In this sparkling screwball comedy, Lily Tomlin’s soul transmigrates into Steve Martin’s body. Result: a high-pitched tug of war – she controls one side of his body, he’s got the other. (We see Tomlin’s reflection whenever Martin passes a mirror.) This internal mayhem smoothly resolves in the end, when we see the two whirling in a let-it-all-hang-out dance of pure joy, captured in a mirror, that grows goofier and giddier, accompanied by a swinging rendition of the jazz standard of the title. Before, the body had been a prison for Martin and Tomlin; here it’s a vehicle of spectacular release, and the display of rapture between well-tuned spirits is utterly contagious.
youtube
19. ‘Stepmom’ (1998), ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’
This makes me cry, because it captures the very essence of living, and love. Susan Sarandon, dying of cancer, carouses in her pajamas with her kids, belting out the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell anthem into a curling iron. They jump on the bed. They prance down the hallway. They give Death a big, fat, life-affirming kick in the caboose.
youtube
20. ‘La La Land’ (2016), opening sequence
The dance numbers in this loving nod to Hollywood’s musical history are so physically rapturous and vicariously thrilling that they almost lift you out of your seat. Attitude adjustment starts with the opening sequence, which turns a traffic jam on an L.A. highway into a full-throttle celebration of life, as folks sing, spin and stomp on the roofs of their cars, while a BMX biker and a freewheeling skateboarder surf the concrete barriers.
youtube
21. ‘White Nights’ (1985), the duet
Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines, two of the greatest male dancers of the late 20th century, united on the dance floor: How can you beat that? This scene offers a side-by-side view of their styles – the tapper’s heavy-hitting power and connection to the floor, the ballet maestro’s elegance, airborne ease and elasticity. Watch how Baryshnikov sinks into his knees, while the lankier Hines stays more upright. In other ways, though, Hines is looser and jazzier, while Baryshnikov is knife-sharp.
youtube
22. ‘You Got Served’ (2004), dance battle
Dance contests come and go, but this one boasts muscular grace, jaw-dropping execution and incomparable street style. The most spectacular street moves require immense (that is, male) upper-body strength — the head-spinning and upside-down windmilling — and we get to revel in that here. But the ladies also have their moments to shine. Although the editing tends to get in the way of the best view of the dancing, the displays of raw, rhythmic power matched with impeccable precision and daring don’t get much better than this.
youtube
23. ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ (2012), dance rehearsal
Cute couple awkwardly learns to dance with the help of their cool friend. Bradley Cooper is the odd man out in this threesome, while Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Tucker offer up the dancing thrills. OK, so they’re modest — this is not showstopping material — but it’s so adorable. Tucker knows just how to womp up Lawrence’s uncooperative hips: “Girl, you gotta move your junk.”
youtube
24. ‘Center Stage’ (2000), ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’
Tutus and motorcycles: a match made in dance heaven. These white-frocked ballerinas are dutifully dull until Ethan Stiefel roars onstage on his bike. At the time, Stiefel was a star at American Ballet Theatre, and this scene offers a terrific look at his virtuosic technique (those pirouettes, those airy leaps – pure gold), as well as his heartthrob appeal. Accompanied by Michael Jackson’s bouncy pop song, this is simply tremendous fun. Classical ballet steps, beautifully performed, get funkified.
youtube
25. ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ (1963), ‘Got a Lotta Livin to Do’
Ann-Margret’s “torrid dancing almost replaces the central heating in the theater,” Life magazine declared in its cover story about “Bye Bye Birdie” and its young heroine. This is the movie that made her a star. She’s also a sensational dancer, in a vamped-up display of seduction aided by belly-baring ruffles and the sexiest pink capris you’ve ever seen. With all of her slinky allure, she also twists, hully-gullies and Watusis with the ensemble to the soundtrack’s brisk jazz. This frisky production is a great mood-booster.
youtube
26. ‘White Chicks’ (2004), dance-off
The premise: Two African-American FBI agents — Keenan Ivory Wayans and Shawn Wayans —disguise themselves as white women to lure a kidnapper out of hiding. It sounds so wrong, but it’s so funny, especially when miniskirted squads of frenemies shake off their frustrations on the dance floor. The undercover agents jump into the mix, in their low-rise jeans and pastel leathers (the girl clothes are craptastically horrendous). They’ve done such a good job of being female, and now their true, testosterone-fueled selves come out in aggressive, head-spinning moves that are just plain out of reach for most of us ladies. That should blow their cover. No one seems to notice this.
youtube
27. ‘House Party’ (1990), dance scene
Teens want to hang out together, have fun and party — this hasn’t changed since forever — but it’s the partying here that’s extraordinary. We see it on their terms, in the close, crowded quarters of a living room, with just enough space for explosive moves, sassy personal expression, all kinds of style and exhilarating, good-natured fun. It’s an instantly immersive experience; you feel like you’re on the dance floor with them, bopping along as hip-hop duo Kid n Play show off their swiveling, sliding, twisting footwork.
youtube
28. ‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994), twist contest
“I wanna dance, I wanna win, I want that trophy. So dance good.” A menacing Uma Thurman and a game John Travolta shed their shoes for an intense go-go scene that comes out of nowhere, in the middle of a bloody crime film. Director Quentin Tarantino has said he was inspired by New Wave master Jean-Luc Godard, known to drop an incongruous dance into his work. Note how the actors draw our focus to their fingers and toes. Of course, we’re also thinking back on the younger, disco-dancing Travolta, so the scene is poignant as well as darkly funny. And very, very odd.
youtube
29. ‘The Cotton Club’ (1984), ‘Crazy Rhythm’
Brothers Maurice and Gregory Hines were estranged for 10 years in real life, and this scene re-creates the emotional reunion on the dance floor of the siblings who had been childhood tap partners. Francis Ford Coppola’s film brought veteran hoofers such as Charles “Honi” Coles back to the spotlight, and these scenes are priceless. But the Hines duet is infused with palpable warmth and bone-deep sympathy.
youtube
30. ‘A Chorus Line’ (1985), ‘Next’
In some ways, the dancing life is like the military, especially here. This film about Broadway opens with auditions, where the dance captain is a drill sergeant and the chorines are uber-disciplined grunts firing off a battery of moves. A lot of movie dancing shows us the slippery ease and glory of moving to music, but here we see the opposite: the punishing work, humiliations and stoicism behind it. And after all that, the four cruelest words a dancer will ever hear: “Thank you very much.”
youtube
31. ‘Pennies From Heaven’ (1981), ‘Let’s Face the Music and Dance’
Talk about nerve: In this tribute to Depression-era musicals, Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters take on one of Astaire and Rogers’s greatest numbers. And they do it justice. They’re a well-matched pair —Martin, light-footed and quick; Peters, all soft edges. The black-and-white design, complete with a tuxedoed ensemble, is timeless.
Sarah L. Kaufman is The Washington Post’s dance critic.
