This is Death Note meets Black Panther. So if you like the idea of Erik as Light Yagami, you're in the right place.
Let me know if you'd like to be tagged.
My fics have no READ MORE option because I do them all from mobile. :/ so sorry about the forever scrolls. 😫 Good thing is I'm keeping chapters to about 1500 words.
1. BEGINNINGS
Dear Journal,
I've written of much in my lifetime and now I continue this in my afterlife. But, Journal? How can I accurately describe this VAST realm where the ghost of my former self now exists? That is all I am.
I'll start with the sky for it has demanded my attention. The contrast of the deep purple and rich blue against blindingly white flashes of light make the starry sky of this ancestral plane the most majestic to behold, even greater than that of a Wakandan sunrise, and for that I am grateful. Under this realm’s sky which is so undefiled, so splendid, so divine that no mortal can look upon or stand under it without first forfeiting their very lives and human shells.. we souls of the past run free in our transcendent forms.
But are we truly free within this elaborate repetition?
When we are not running, we write. I'm sure you're beginning to understand. As ancestors, our words bind the earth realm to our own. We are accountable for recording the events in the earth as well as names.
“N'Jobu. Are you going to run?” Chika paces below on the ground, his jet black fur shining blue under the dramatic sky. Life in the ancestral plane is akin to a vivid dream that never seems to come to a point or an end. “What are you pondering so intently? Give that journal a rest, you are free, N'Jobu. You are meant to run on.. forever,” he spoke, each word echoing in my ear, a cement block sealing my monotonous fate. Is that all there is? Running?
“..I’ll remain here.”
Another omen. The curse of eternal disappointment. Chika runs, striding through the soft green grass, toward eternity. He won’t be back for a millennium and it will still be too soon in the scale of forever.
As I perch atop my branch inscribing these entries, I watch the living trapped in the sinking wheel which is humanity.
I see Wakanda entering a new era. I see impending war waged by the unjust. My claw moves on it's own, inking the names of the innocent and the young. They come everyday before their time. I cannot hold back my–is it sympathy? No, sympathy is invalidation. I’ve been removed from mortality for entirely too long to care. The thing I feel–is intrigue.
-N'Jobu
Sinking wheel aside, the human world has its interesting moments. The human mind is an interesting machine. Humans with the capacity to choose their destiny on a small scale will often cling to life for the sole purpose of defiling it. Tooth and nail, they fight to defy and delay the inevitable, still meeting the same fate they struggled against. Humans pursue the end of a certain evil only to be overcome by the specific evil they’ve created.
Humans as a whole? Predictably ordinary and violent. However, the most interesting things pertain to the actions of individuals. Individuals are the wild cards.
That's what I'd like to explore.

Erik slid his phone from his pocket, sliding it in his line of vision as he walked briskly down the city sidewalk toward the block where his office building stood tall. Yahoo news had a few ridiculous articles, pointless in the nature. He considered putting in his earbuds to listen to his playlist until he reached his building. Or maybe he'd pick a research to dive into absorbing it for no other purpose than regurgitating it to the easily impressed. His business partner would be impressed for sure. Decisions, decisions. Clicking quickly through the internet, he stumbled on a title.
17-year-old Isaiah Mark Lewis was unarmed when he was shot after fighting with two officers who first used a stun gun on him.
Disgusting. Another senseless death at the hands of the morally corrupt, the third he'd heard of in two weeks. He hit the back button searching for something different, something lighter.
Marzeus Scott, an unarmed 35-year-old killed by police in Blytheville, Arkansas.
He exited his browser, pocketing his phone and looking ahead to the silver sky and concrete jungle which enveloped him. Black man with a bald fade and suit up ahead, 2:00. Black woman with a long skirt and blazer behind him, 6:00. He couldn't help but see clear targets on their backs as well as his own. It was an unspoken phenomenon, this fear of blackness that became the black soul's burden to carry. Like ants, black people were expected to work pointless 9-5's for CEOs that cared more for dogs and money than human life. Everyday there was the dark aura of the capitalistic, racist shoe hovering above, playing god.
His calf-skin Armani loafers hit the ground at a steady pace and the Harlequin Jacquard wool blazer he wore moved with him like a thick second skin. A police car rolled along with the traffic to his left as he kept his eyes forward.
2:00. Black man sitting on the ground. Elderly. Homeless. It was only a matter of time before he'd be chased away by some pompous authority. Erik took out a few bills folding them into his palm to quickly pass to the old man.
"I can't take this," he rasped. "I can't-- I-- Thank you so much. Thank you." He grabbed Erik's hand which held the $300 and shook it, not letting go. "Thank you so much," he repeated before Erik pulled his hand back.
Great. Now he had to wait at the crosswalk because he'd missed the break in traffic.
He checked his watch impatiently, a rose gold Patek Philippe Nautilus gifted to him by his team at 2K Security, Inc. Having fattened their pockets over the years, he was their hero. And now he was on his way back to his office for a virtual meeting with Samsung.
"Good morning, Mr. Stevens," Gloria, the receptionist perked on his arrival to the ground floor lobby. Nodding in greeting, he could feel her eyes scrolling over him but like every time before, he ignored this--stepping into one of the four large elevators which took him up smoothly to the very top where his spacious office resided.
Large floor to ceiling windows lit the white painted room naturally and his computer awaited, ON but sleep. He could practically see the seconds ticking quickly by, but luckily he was just in time for the meeting with Sandeep.
"Password and login, okay.. 2kMeetings.com. Input access code," he mumbled punching keys all to see the brown skin man with a pompadour of thick straight jet black hair staring back at him. He started the recording.
"Can I say this the best web conferencing software I've used thus far? And I've used a lot," Sandeep commented seemingly impressed. Erik wasn't surprised having been named in Forbes, but he smiled nonetheless giving humble thanks. This software was his own creation. The company overall was his baby. He nurtured it like one would nurture an actual child.
The meeting began and as it progressed, Erik had new projects to undergo, features that Samsung wanted to incorporate into their products and even into their own security and data systems. They began to talk user privacy, security VPNs, and MDMs. Soon after, it was time to disconnect and implement some of the changes discussed.
Hours later, Erik had not ceased in his work. He would not stop until he absolutely had to, it was a thing about him. When it came to his baby he was totally engrossed.
"Baby," Erik spoke into the phone catching it on the second ring when he saw the name Mika flash on the screen with a picture she'd taken and set as the icon herself. "Oh, uh--Dinner? I don't know, I've got a lotta shit to do today." He started typing a code and nearly forgot to continue his call. "Uh--Mika," he paused to type another line. "I may be late tonight."
Movement from the corner of his eye caught his attention. Something had fallen through the sky.
"Hm? Oh. What happened?--Nah, I ain't hear about that story, but I just read about two more today. They're just out here killing niggas left and right." He stood looking through one of the tall clean windows to see what had dropped from the sky. No one on the ground seemed to notice. Was he buggin? "Hm? They what? His hands were up and they shot him? With cameras recording?" He listened to his girl's angry report. She was right, they'd probably get off regardless of the evidence. She would know, she was a cop. Well, a detective.
He headed back to the elevator, cellphone in hand while his girl gave him the entire story, venting her frustration simultaneously. When he stepped onto the sidewalk outside of the building, there was no disturbance. No one seemed to be glued to the area for any particular reason. He looked in every direction including up finding a black leather bound journal on the concrete with its spine in the air. If he hadn't seen it fall from the sky, he'd have assumed some random passerby dropped it and he'd have ignored it. Picking it up, he shook and dusted it, turning it this way and that. "No. No protest." Mika was bent on being front line, but it was dangerous. She could get hurt. "You're not going," he asserted. "I understand, but I want you to be safe, okay? Hm?--Aight. I'll see you tonight. Love you," he said hanging up and pocketing the phone, both hands now gripping the worn journal. Whose was it?
The deafening whir of a siren broke through the city noise before a police car appeared from around the corner up ahead. The stories of the three recently murdered men swirled in Erik's head. With the police's extreme prejudices, the results were never favorable for those who looked like him regardless of what they wore, did, or their level of innocence and involvement. He could only imagine the violence that would come from the driver when he made it to his location. Would there be another bad report?
There he was again--anticipating the drop of the sadistic shoe overhead. An ant's mentality. As an ant, this world he was chained to was nothing but disappointment.

Thanks to @curriebelle for the prompt, "masquerade ball". I did a bit of research for historical accuracy and proper Venetian-ness, but I make no promises. Also, there's a bit of Italian throughout this that I didn't bother to footnote, so you may want to have google translate open, or you could guess, you'll probably be fine, it's not very involved.
Venice, 1724
Ah, there he is.
A bit on the nose, perhaps, the devilish red Volto-style mask, complete with sculpted horns, but then Crowley has never been all that subtle. It's been said that Carnevale is where people show their deepest, truest selves, hearts on sleeves and all the rest of it. A shame, Aziraphale thinks, that humans need the security of a mask to hide behind before they'll let themselves be truly free. A shame, but entirely understandable to Aziraphale. Humanity is often cowardly when it comes to profound emotion, and he can certainly relate.
Which is why it has been nigh on a half hour since he showed his invitation at the door - addressed only to Il Putto in a quirk of charming and enticing secretiveness - and he has yet to take a single step forward since noticing Il Diavolo. Well, in all honesty, "noticing" was probably not the best word for it. He had been fairly struck by the sight of Crowley in his crisp red velvet coat with its black brocade and gleaming gold buttons, vest and breeches in sleek black silk, a jaunty but elegant black tricorne hat adorned with a plump red feather perched on his head, and the look finished with frankly outrageous varnished red shoes with massive gilded buckles. The vision had rooted Aziraphale to the spot. Ever the flash bastard, was his... counterpart. A waiter had soon come by with a tray of drinks, to which Aziraphale had almost unknowingly helped himself, and he had been standing there ever since, sipping from it and watching Crowley prance and twirl from dance partner to dance partner, temptation to temptation. The latest song ends and the dashing demon bows low to his latest conquest, snapping up at the waist just as the musicians lift their bows from their instruments in unison, before removing himself to the edge of the dancefloor and disappearing among the crowd of revellers.
Aziraphale's corporeal feet suddenly remember how to move and begin to carry him through the crowd, not toward Crowley, heavens no, but to somewhere he can hope to catch another glimpse of that impressive red mask, the bob of a scarlet feather. It seems the feet in question had grown restless during his prolonged motionlessness, and they pull him along rather more zealously than the rest of his body can handle. It is only a matter of a few steps before he tumbles headlong into the arms of a fellow partygoer, spilling his white wine and dignity all over the stranger. "Oh dear, terribly sorry- or ah, scusa..." He straightens and brushes himself off, then nearly jumps at the fearsome sight of the Medico della Peste before him. He manages to turn the fright into a respectable chuckle, though, remembering that certain individuals have in recent years taken to making a costume of the plague doctor's dark robes and odd, beaked mask. He had thought it rather tasteless initially, but confronted with one now, close-up, he has to confess that it is rather impressive; dark folds of heavy cloth envelop the man like a panel of thick, black, night sky, a cowl fully covering the head and neck, the odd flat hat and characteristic white beak painting up a singular silhouette. "Ottimo costume, signore," he says, remembering his Italian. A terse nod from the other, and silence. "Ah, where are my manners, I've spilt your drink, too. Cameriere!"
~~
Crowley is stunned.
He had come here off-duty, with no intention of inciting, aiding, or abetting any sort of sin, for a few reasons. Firstly, humans were rather good at doing all that themselves without him; doubly so with alcohol present, triply or more from behind the anonymity of masks. Secondly, while temptation could be fun, it had been a long year of wiling and he was uncharacteristically tired. Wiled-out. Wild-through. Wiled-thin (and if there was more to it than that, if it had been an awfully long time since two adversaries met on a misty battlefield and talked about war and peace and the fomenting thereof, and if he was starting to feel the weight of those years empty of a particular bright smile and endearingly questioning eyes, well he certainly wasn't going to admit it).
The third reason was that it was Carnevale, da- bless it, and if no one else had to work for these few merry weeks, then he certainly wasn't going to. That was just basic sloth, that. Straight out of Sin 101. Besides, Crowley rather enjoys simply watching people, and there are many to watch here in this city, at this time of year. He likes posting up in the corner of a crowded room and letting the full spectacle of human virtue and vice and everything in between unfold before him, as dramatically or discreetly as it pleases. There has always been something fascinating about humans, Crowley thinks. They are clever things. Ruthless and tender, full of contrasts. They never fail to put on an entertaining show, and now they are even dressed as performers.
This is why he had pulled the great black cloak on, donned the pointed mask, miracled up a party invitation for Il Dottore Peste and set up camp here in the shadows at the edge of the ballroom, where he can see widely without needing to be seen - though he is utterly unrecognizable in the doctor's guise. He likes this costume. It amuses him, somewhat morbidly. Humans had started to wear it to remind themselves that life was short, a message which fit seamlessly into the spirit of Carnevale. Crowley rather enjoys the irony of an eternal being walking around dressed in memento mori. Besides, it is warm. He is cold-blooded, and it is impossible to escape the way wind comes up off the water and snakes its way into your bones here, in this city of waterways. It is December for Hell's sake, he isn't about to go skipping about without a sturdy outer layer on.
So he had prepared, in a manner of speaking. But not for this. He had not prepared for Aziraphale to be there, let alone for the blasted angel to trip and fall literally into his arms like some tragicomedic heroine. And yet there he was, all wrapped up in soft pinks and blues, and a generous helping of cloud-white in the form of a flowing cravat and dainty tricorne. A white-feathered Colombina half-mask, too, which left his round little apple-red cheeks and soft-lipped pink mouth unhidden. Absolutely bloody cherubic.
Crowley had frozen in place at the sound of the familiar mortified voice, the scrambled apology threaded through two languages and pulled taut by fretting hands. Crowley had just had the time to blink a couple of times and ensure that he wasn't hallucinating when Aziraphale swept back around to face him again, brandishing two fresh glasses of wine, one of which he places in Crowley's gloved hand.
"There you are my dear fellow! Ancora scusa."
And with that he's gone, tottering off between the fine suits and frilly dresses, neck craned toward the dancefloor. Crowley's mouth opens behind the plague mask, then shuts. He didn't know it was me. He slumps back into the plush upholstery of the seat he's claimed, sprawls out over it as is his custom. Of course Aziraphale didn't recognize him like this. What would there be to recognize? His face? Mask. His hair? Cowl. The shape of his body? Cloak. His voice? He hadn't breathed a word. Crowley grits his teeth and scrunches his face up in a frightful expression of dissatisfaction, which no one sees. This is just as well, because it is entirely inwardly directed. He lets his gaze drift to the dancefloor, where bodies are beginning to gather once again, following the orchestra's quick break. A sea of masks filling up once more, white Bauta and black Moretta, the likenesses of Zanni, Arlecchino, Pantalone, and the rest of the cast of the Comedia dell'arte, old gossips and military captains and monsters and animals and - oh.
There, nearing the very centre of the dancefloor, is a dandy dressed in a vibrant red coat, with a blood-red devil mask to match. He is twirling and peacocking about in front of a row of ladies, an absolutely ridiculous puff of a plume lazily following his movements. What a prick, thinks Crowley bitterly. His eyes trace a line to the other side of the room where a cloud-white hat is poking up eagerly, angled directly toward the detestable man in red. Fuck. Now that will not do.
~~
Aziraphale has finally managed to push to the front of the crowd and get a clear few of the dancefloor. His eyes scan it for a moment before once more alighting on the vivid red shape of Il Diavolo. He jostles slightly, adjusting his position for prime Crowley-viewing, and prepares to drink his fill of the way the demon moves, the way the light plays on his flamboyant clothes. He finds himself wondering how long Crowley had been based in Venice; he seems to have picked up certain Italian idiosyncrasies since they last spoke, little locally inspired changes to his manner, new flutters of his hands. Aziraphale really has been away too long. He sips his wine and watches the show, keeping his hat low as if that would have any effect on Crowley's ability to recognize him should he happen to glance Aziraphale's way. There doesn't seem to be much of a chance of that happening anyway, frankly. Il Diavolo seems determined to dance the night away, and as such is quite distracted with his apparently endless parade of partners. At that thought, Aziraphale notices a suspiciously orderly row of people on the edge of the dancefloor behind Il Diavolo, and is that- it is! He's got them queuing up!
Demonic stamina, he marvels, surreptitiously shaking his head. What if he were to- no, no, certainly not. But after all... why not? It wouldn't be all that difficult to make his way around to the other side of the dancefloor, to join the queue. He'd continue to have a good view and in a while, he could take his own turn dancing with the demon. He wasn't usually one for dancing, but he hadn't known Crowley to be particularly either, and yet there he goes, nimble feet somehow managing not to tangle with those of the handsome Capitano now on his arm. Maybe it isn't so hard, he thinks. What does he have to lose?
He stifles a laugh. He has a great deal to lose. He has... missed Crowley, in a way, and he cannot allow their reunion to be marred by some clumsy, literal misstep. No, it would be foolish. Definitely foolish. He is happy to watch.
Il Diavolo's dance takes him across the dancefloor again, and again Aziraphale finds himself twisting his neck uncomfortably to see him clearly. He starts to shift back again the way he came, toward the silent plague doctor chap in his darkened corner.
~~
Crowley is propulsed out of his seat by the sudden pang of jealousy. And then, as soon as it came, the heat is gone.
What exactly would he have done, he asks himself as he settles yet again in his corner, body melting back against a cushion. Stormed over there and shouted at Aziraphale through the mask, something about "not him, me!", or pulled off his getup in the middle of the party to reveal himself, going against every unwritten code of Carnevale and drawing a mountain of unnecessary attention to the two of them, probably getting them both booted into a canal for the imposition? And even without considering the practical aspects of delivering such a message, what was the point of the message itself? Minutes ago he would have been perfectly content (well not quite, but never mind that) for the entire evening to pass without him seeing head nor tail of Aziraphale, and now here he is, scrambling to make himself known to the angel. What sense does that make?
No, he shall stay here, and let Aziraphale go on thinking whatever he thinks. He considers taking a drink from the glass in his hand, then remembers the mask. Just an accessory, then, this wine. Let Aziraphale have this, he thinks, he's clearly enjoying himself, watching the overstuffed fop put on his show.
It is an easy enough mistake to make, Crowley supposes. He is a bit hurt that Aziraphale could mistake him for such a- pompous, puffed up- arrogant- son of a- ahem. The point is, as much as it may hurt his demonic pride to admit, there could be said to be certain - minor, superficial, and only in a certain light - similarities between himself and the fellow in the red. Crowley knows he can scarcely be counted among the humble, that his style could certainly be described as showy, if not typically colourful, and he can even concede that there is something of his usual temptations in the way the man takes each new partner by the hand, as though he is about to show them a brand new world. But it's exaggerated and crass, almost a caricature of his own way of doing things, and he can't help but feel somewhat miffed in the face of Aziraphale's obsession with the bloke, obvious even from a room away. Or it was- at least, he was-
"You've got a good view of Il Diavolo from here, haven't you old chap? Ah, I mean, come si dice- oh bugger it all, it isn't as though you were much of a conversationalist earlier. I hope you'll excuse me, but the drink is rather impeding my ability to make myself understood in your language, and by no means do I wish to sober up at this time."
Aziraphale drops down into the seat next to Crowley, folding his hands in his lap as he turns his head back toward the blur of red controlling the dancefloor. Crowley forces himself to recover quickly from the minor shock of the angel appearing so suddenly again at his side.
"I know him," Aziraphale says, pointing, a proud little smile on his face. "I've worked with him before. He's a colleague."
Crowley tilts his head in what he hopes looks like an interested gesture.
Il Putto takes the encouragement. "Lovely fellow, really. A bit... stubborn, at times, but quite pleasant, deep down." Aziraphale looks to the dancefloor with wistful watery-blue eyes. "I quite like him."
Behind the safety of the mask, Crowley gulps. Is that so, then? He opens a gloved palm in a curious gesture. Go on.
Aziraphale's cherub cheeks darken further, and he chuckles. "Yes, I rather enjoy his company. It has been some time since we last spoke, and I was happier to see him than I had expected I would be, if you can believe it." At that he flexes one of his doughy hands, toys with a ruffle on his sleeve. "Do you know, I was considering going to line up for a dance with him? That must seem to you an odd thing to do, dancing with a work colleague at a masked ball. I'm not even much of a dancer really. Don't know where the idea came from." His eyes remain fixed ahead for a moment, and then steal sideways, to Crowley, briefly. For a moment Crowley is afraid the gig is up, that Aziraphale has worked it out and that he's going to have some uncomfortable explaining to do. But then he sees something in the heaven-blue eyes, a sort of question, a need for... is it assurance? Permission?
He drops his head to one side, letting the beak of his mask point toward the man in red, still dancing up a storm. Off you go, then.
Aziraphale lights up. "Do you really think so? It's not... silly? Foolish? You don't think he'll laugh?"
Don't push it, Angel, he thinks, but points his beak more sharply toward the dancefloor.
"No, you're right. You're absolutely right. It's Carnevale, after all, no inhibitions, all that business. Thank you my dear fellow!"
Aziraphale bounces off the seat and disappears back into the crowd in a cloud of pink and blue frills and ribbons. As soon as he is gone, Crowley drops his masked face into one gloved hand.
~~
Aziraphale is fairly buzzing with excitement. Here he is, at the edge of the dancefloor, next in line. And there is Crowley, twirling a young woman in a cat mask with his long, strong fingers, scarlet coat swishing behind him. At last, the furiously spinning pair approach the edge of the dancefloor as the music swells to its climax. He dips her on the final, sustained note, then draws her back up, kisses her hand, straightens his cravat and strides toward his next partner.
Which is Aziraphale. Il Putto steps forward, holds out a hand. "Posso avere questa danza?" he asks, and it comes out more sheepish than he intended by half.
"Beninteso," comes the reply and it's... wrong. This warm, rolling bass is not Crowley's. The hand reaching forward to take his is not Crowley's either. The curl of black hair slipping out around one ear and contrasting against the red of the mask is certainly not Crowley's.
Aziraphale stumbles back. "S-sor- ah, scusa," he manages, pulling away from the dancefloor and the stranger and back into the far more comforting press of bodies surrounding it.
Dazed, he makes his way back to where he was last. The plague doctor is still there, holding the same wineglass he was earlier. He welcomes Aziraphale back with a half-nod. For someone whose language Aziraphale hasn't been speaking this entire time, the fellow certainly does a good of job of seeming like he understands. Pretending, perhaps.
"It wasn't him," says Aziraphale quietly, mostly to himself. The plague doctor puts a comforting hand on his back and- Aziraphale tenses. Behind his eyes flash the brown dirt of Mesopotamia, the sands of Judah, the white tiles of Rome, the misty hills of England. A feeling of calm inspired by the soothing drag of black and red scales over soft skin. That touch... it couldn't be. His nerves calm, sensation returns to his muscles. He turns to face his adversary, his counterpart, his... friend.
There is no one there.

Hispanic Heritage Month, established in 1988, runs from September 15 through October 15. It recognizes and celebrates the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to the United States. Florida in particular has a strong Hispanic legacy including the oldest inhabited city in the U.S., St. Augustine, which was founded in 1565 by the Spanish. Later this fall, UCF will celebrate our new status as a Hispanic-serving institution which means more than 25% of our enrolled students identify as Hispanic.
Join the UCF Libraries as we celebrate our favorite Hispanic authors and books. Click on the Keep Reading  link below to see the full list, descriptions, and catalog links for the featured Back-so-School titles suggested by UCF Library employees. These 14 books plus many more are also on display on the 2nd (main) floor of the John C. Hitt Library next to the bank of two elevators.
By Night in Chile by Roberto Bolaño  As through a crack in the wall, By Night in Chile's single night-long rant provides a terrifying, clandestine view of the strange bedfellows of Church and State in Chile. This wild, eerily compact novel—Roberto Bolano's first work available in English—recounts the tale of a poor boy who wanted to be a poet, but ends up a half-hearted Jesuit priest and a conservative literary critic, a sort of lap dog to the rich and powerful cultural elite, in whose villas he encounters Pablo Neruda and Ernst Junger. Father Urrutia is offered a tour of Europe by agents of Opus Dei (to study "the disintegration of the churches," a journey into realms of the surreal); and ensnared by this plum, he is next assigned—after the destruction of Allende—the secret, never-to-be-disclosed job of teaching Pinochet, at night, all about Marxism, so the junta generals can know their enemy. Soon, searingly, his memories go from bad to worse. Suggested by Sandy Avila, Research & Information Services
Elizabeth Catlett: An American artist in Mexico by Melanie Anne Herzog In tracing Catlett’s long and continuing career as a graphic artist and sculptor in Mexico, Herzog explores an important period in Catlett’s life between the 1950s and the 1970s about which almost nothing is known in the United States. She examines the “Mexicanness” in Catlett’s work in its fluent relationship to the underlying and constant sense of African American identity she brought with her to Mexico. Herzog’s solidly grounded interpretation offers a new way to understand Catlett’s work and reveals this artist as a fascinating and pivotal intercultural figure whose powerful art manifests her firm belief that the visual arts can play a role in the construction of a meaningful identity, both transnational and ethnically grounded. Suggested by Peggy Nuhn, UCF Connect
Esperanza Rising by Pam Muoz Ryan Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico--she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances--Mama's life, and her own, depend on it. Suggested by Peggy Nuhn, UCF Connect
Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Contrearas Inspired by the author's own life, and told through the alternating perspectives of the willful Chula and the achingly hopeful Petrona, Fruit of the Drunken Tree contrasts two very different, but inextricably linked coming-of-age stories. In lush prose, Rojas Contreras has written a powerful testament to the impossible choices women are often forced to make in the face of violence and the unexpected connections that can blossom out of desperation.   Suggested by Sara Duff, Acquisitions & Collections
Hot soles in Harlem by Emilio Díaz Valcarcel Gerardo Sanchez is not the average Puerto Rican immigrant to New York City: he is ironically blessed with blond hair and blue eyes, fair skin, and the good fortune to have met Aleluya, an intrepid guide to the "New Yorkian" world, on his first day in the city.  I am not a tractor!: how Florida farmworkers took on the fast food giants and won by Susan L. Marquis I Am Not a Tractor! celebrates the courage, vision, and creativity of the farmworkers and community leaders who have transformed one of the worst agricultural situations in the United States into one of the best. Susan L. Marquis highlights past abuses workers suffered in Florida’s tomato fields: toxic pesticide exposure, beatings, sexual assault, rampant wage theft, and even, astonishingly, modern-day slavery. Marquis unveils how, even without new legislation, regulation, or government participation, these farmworkers have dramatically improved their work conditions. Marquis credits this success to the immigrants from Mexico, Haiti, and Guatemala who formed the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a neuroscience major who takes great pride in the watermelon crew he runs, a leading farmer/grower who was once homeless, and a retired New York State judge who volunteered to stuff envelopes and ended up building a groundbreaking institution. Through the Fair Food Program that they have developed, fought for, and implemented, these people have changed the lives of more than thirty thousand field workers.Suggested by Megan Haught, Teaching & Engagement/Research & Information Services

Latina/o Stars in U.S. Eyes: the makings and meanings of film and TV stardom by Mary C. Beltrán This book explores the role film and television stardom has played in establishing, reinforcing, and challenging popular ethnic notions of Latina/os in the United States since the silent film era of the 1920s. In addition to documenting the importance of Latina and Latino stars to American film and television history, Mary C. Beltrán focuses on key moments in the construction of "Hollywood Latinidad" by analyzing the public images of these stars as promoted by Hollywood film studios, television networks, producers, and the performers themselves. Critically surveying the careers of such film and television stars as Dolores Del Rio, Desi Arnaz, Rita Moreno, Freddie Prinze, Edward James Olmos, Jessica Alba, and Jennifer Lopez, Latina/o Stars in U.S. Eyes also addresses the impact of the rise in Latina and Latino media producers and the current status of Latina/o stardom.  Suggested by Richard Harrison, Research & Information Services
Latino Images in Film: stereotypes, subversion, resistance by Charles Ramirez Berg The bandido, the harlot, the male buffoon, the female clown, the Latin lover, and the dark lady—these have been the defining, and demeaning, images of Latinos in U.S. cinema for more than a century. In this book, Charles Ramírez Berg develops an innovative theory of stereotyping that accounts for the persistence of such images in U.S. popular culture. He also explores how Latino actors and filmmakers have actively subverted and resisted such stereotyping. Suggested by Richard Harrison, Research & Information Services

The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore For twenty years, the Palomas and the Corbeaus have been rivals and enemies, locked in an escalating feud for over a generation. Both families make their living as traveling performers in competing shows-the Palomas swimming in mermaid exhibitions, the Corbeaus, former tightrope walkers, performing in the tallest trees they can find. Lace Paloma may be new to her family's show, but she knows as well as anyone that the Corbeaus are pure magia negra, black magic from the devil himself. Simply touching one could mean death, and she's been taught from birth to keep away. But when disaster strikes the small town where both families are performing, it's a Corbeau boy, Cluck, who saves Lace's life. And his touch immerses her in the world of the Corbeaus, where falling for him could turn his own family against him, and one misstep can be just as dangerous on the ground as it is in the trees. But when her mother, Mami, a force of nature, takes off to New York with her seven, soon to be eleven children, Esmeralda, the oldest, must learn new rules, a new language, and eventually a new identity. In the first of her three acclaimed memoirs, Esmeralda brilliantly recreates her tremendous journey from the idyllic landscape and tumultuous family life of her earliest years, to translating for her mother at the welfare office, and to high honors at Harvard. We Predict These Kitchen Trends Will Be Everywhere in 2021@|what is new in kitchen design@|https://ift.tt/3h75BTp
Tumblr media
DANA GALLAGHER
While the all-white kitchen will probably never go out of style, there are lots of new design trends for 2021 that will make you equally happy. Think: natural elements with some pops of color as well as a visit to the dark side with colors you might never expect. We know, we know. You’ve already carefully chosen every appliance, picked out each piece of hardware, and planned your kitchen design to a T, but there are ways to dip your toes into the world of color without messing up your rustic farmhouse kitchen aesthetic. On the color front, why not try painting your ceiling a fun color, like Haint Blue? How about hauling in some colorful appliances?

If you’ve been wanting to layer in more natural elements, try “sustainable” and “eco-friendly” items. These are words that are popping up more and more, with many companies offering green solutions for cabinets and shelving. You can also think about bringing in handmade tiles in materials like terra-cotta and cement—a great solution for adding a little more soul to your space, regardless of whether or not you opt to completely switch over to a farmhouse style vibe.
When it comes to countertops, quartz is quickly becoming an affordable and low maintenance alternative to our beloved marble. There are even new trends for accessorizing your countertops, like vintage plate racks made to display your grandmother’s china. Hardware and metal finishes continue to push the envelope—think brass, nickel, and matte black. Removable wallpaper companies are making it even easier to experiment with pattern on walls and backsplashes. Consider 2021 as the year of the kitchen!

Originally a room in the home used for storing and preserving foods (think: the refrigerator before the refrigerator was invented), the kitchen larder has transformed into a stand-alone cupboard or pantry. They can be large enough to house the majority of your dry goods but small enough to keep things organized while taking up a minimal amount of valuable space. Forget a walk-in and sub in counter-top cabinet or add doors to enclose pre-existing shelving.

Kitchen Wallpaper
While wallpaper has become less scary to the general population over the last five years or so, folks are still reluctant to hang it in the kitchen. If you’re scared about the permanency of wallpaper, try something less, well, permanent. There are plenty of peel-and-stick papers in trendy designs that are incredibly easy to install and remove. Hot tip: Opt for a graphic design that mimics the look of tile.

Kitchen Plate Racks
Vintage plate racks are coming back in a big way in 2021. Whether displayed on countertops or mounted on walls, they add a ton of soul to a space and give you an actual place to store and display your dishware instead of hiding it away in a hutch or cupboard.

Open shelves allow you to showcase your beautiful kitchenwares among other heirlooms and antiques. The ability to see through your storage also means everything is easy to find. It’s also helpful to keep every day items on the lowest, most accessible shelf.

Standout Sinks
You don’t have to go nuts to achieve an on-trend kitchen. While an apron-front sink in a farmhouse kitchen isn’t exactly unexpected, a farmhouse sink in soapstone with brass hardware is a showstopper—especially when it’s set against white walls, wood cabinets, and stainless steel countertops.

Natural Wood Tones in the Kitchen
While we’re still seeing stained and painted woods, we’re also seeing it in its natural state. Try adding a kitchen island—or just the topper—in a pretty, grainy wood. Brown wooden shelves that feel original to the house are another way to test the waters with wood. It will bring a warmth to any kitchen space, especially those trending bright white ones!

Tons of Texture
For those who fear color, focus on mixing up the finishes. Designer Cathy Chapman chose white beadboard on the ceiling and shiplap for the walls. She used unlacquered brass strap hinges and latches on the cabinets, black marble on the island countertop, and tons of warm woods on the floors, backsplash, and remaining countertops.

First Date Jitters
For my entry for the Miraculous Pride Zine, I wrote about Alya and Marinette’s first date. Because they are adorable. Ao3
“Marinette! Alya’s here!”
Marinette jumped at the sound of her father’s voice calling from downstairs, barely avoiding stabbing herself in the eye with her mascara wand.
“I’ll be right down!” she called back, trying to calm her beating heart. Her hand only shook slightly as she finished applying her mascara.
She looked in the mirror, nervously. She had only finished the dress last night, and she thought it turned out well. It was pink, simple and cute. It was a good first date dress. She hoped Alya liked it.
“You’ll be fine, Marinette.” Tikki flew up to her and laid a reassuring paw on her shoulder. “It’s just Alya. She’s your best friend.”
“Not anymore.” Marinette said, checking for flyaway hairs. “She’s my girlfriend now. Now it’s different.”
“She is still Alya. The only difference now is you both know that you love each other.” Tikki sighed. Her chosen was so ridiculous sometimes. “Now get downstairs, she’s waiting for you.”
Marinette sighed and took a deep breath. She could do this. It was Alya. It was just a date. A date with Alya. Her girlfriend. Whom she loved very much.
Pushing away her fear, she headed down the stairs.
Alya was sitting on the couch, talking casually with Marinette’s mother while her father pored over the bakery budgets. All three of them looked up when Marinette entered.
“Oh, Marinette, you look lovely!” Sabine said, standing up and rushing over to her.
Marinette blushed as her mother smoothed the fabric of her dress, smiling. Her attention, however, was focused on Alya.
Alya was staring at her, a wide smile on her face. She looked lovely. Her reddish curls spilled over her shoulders, contrasting beautifully with her dark blue striped dress. Marinette’s heart beat faster just looking at her. Alya’s smile made her nose scrunch up, making her glasses slide slightly down her nose. She pushed them up with one finger and Marinette almost melted. She was so adorable.
“Hey,” Alya said, stepping forward. She leaned in, like she was going for a hug, but stopped. “You look, uh, really pretty.”
Marinette’s already impressive blush deepened. “So do you.” She wanted to hug Alya, but she was hesitant. She couldn’t just hug her like she used to. They were a couple now, not just friends.
“You both look beautiful!” Marinette’s father’s voice boomed as he stood up from his desk. His large arms enveloped them both in a tight hug.
“Let them go, dear.” Sabine said, laughing at her husband. “They have to get to their reservation.”
“I know, I know.” Tom let them go reluctantly. “My baby girl on her first date. I can’t help myself.” He made an exaggerated sniffing motion, wiping away a tear that fell down his cheek. “You take care of her, you hear me, Alya?”
Alya laughed, familiar with Tom’s dramatic antics. “I will protect her with my life, sir.”
“Don’t you break her heart!” Tom’s attempt at a scary face end up more endearing than intimidating, primarily because he couldn’t help the giant grin on his face.
“Tom, stop teasing them.” Sabine laughed, swatting her giant husband on the shoulder.
He laughed. “I know, honey. I’m just so happy.”
Marinette’s heart beat hard in her chest as her mother ushered them both out the door.
“Sorry about them,” she muttered to Alya after they had walked in awkward silence for a block.
“Don’t worry. I’m used to them.” Alya smiled and Marinette felt her heart skip a beat. Alya was too beautiful.
In her distraction, she put her foot down wrong and felt her stomach lurch as she fell. Reaching out wildly, her hands grabbed the arm of Alya’s dress. She managed to stop herself from hitting the ground, but the loud tearing sound made her stomach drop.
She looked up slowly, hoping that she had imagined the sound of fabric ripping. The shocked look on Alya’s face and the awkward way the sleeve fell down her shoulder told her otherwise.
Marinette stood quickly, berating herself. “I’m so sorry. I’m so clumsy and stupid and oh god I’m so sorry!” This was horrible. The worst first date ever. Alya was going to hate her now. She wouldn’t want to be her girlfriend or even her friend and she ruined everything.
“It’s okay! Don’t worry.” Alya put a hand on her shoulder. “It’s just a dress.”
“But you can’t go on a date in a ripped dress.” She leaned over to examine the damage. It was a short tear along the seam of the sleeve, which meant it would be an easy fix, but it still was awkwardly placed—and it would definitely be noticeable.
“I’m fine. It isn’t that bad.” She tried to tuck the torn bit into her bra, but it flopped out again when she moved her arm. “Okay, maybe not.”
“We should just call off the date,” Marinette said miserably.
“No way,” Alya said, putting her hands on Marinette’s shoulders. “I don’t care if my dress is totally destroyed, I’m going to go on this date with you. I’ve been looking forward to it for too long.”
Marinette smiled hesitantly. She had been looking forward to it too, ever since they had confessed their feelings for each other. The reassuring weight of Alya’s hands helped calm her anxiety. “I have a little sewing kit in my purse, I could do a little temporary fix if you want? And fix it properly later?”
Alya’s face lit up with joy and it made Marinette’s chest feel warm. “That’s a great idea! Do you want to go back to your place to do it?”
Marinette looked back in the direction of her house and shook her head. She loved her parents and she loved knowing she had their support, but she wasn’t sure she could deal with them again right now. “Let’s just sit in the park. The lights should be bright enough.”
“That sounds great,” Alya said and took Marinette’s hand as they crossed the street to the small park. Marinette’s felt clumsy and awkward as she hurried to keep up with her taller girlfriend.
“We can sit here.” She gestured to a bench under a street light. “I should be able to see well enough.”
They sat and Marinette dug her small sewing kit out of her purse with clumsy hands. Tikki smiled reassuringly from next to her phone and Marinette tried to relax. She hadn’t ruined everything yet. Now she needed to just not stab Alya with a needle and everything would be good.
“Can you still do it while it is on me?” Alya asked, pulling her hair away from the ripped section.
Marinette hummed in affirmation as she threaded her needle. “With this sort of rip, yeah. It will need proper attention later but I can make it work.”
“Of course you can.” There was pride in Alya’s voice; the summer evening suddenly felt too hot. “You are so amazing.”
“Not as amazing as you.” Marinette focused her attention on stitching up the dress and not on Alya’s face. There would be no way she could focus if she looked at Alya’s face.
“We’re both pretty amazing.” Alya chuckled and Marinette nearly missed a stitch. She wanted to lean over and kiss Alya so bad. Her lips looked extra soft today and she was so close and smelled so good. But was it the right time? Probably not.
The tear was fixed in no time, hidden behind Marinette’s expert stitching. Alya glanced down at her phone. “Wow, you did that quick. We still have plenty of time to get to the restaurant. You’re so talented.” She leaned back and laid a soft kiss on Marinette’s lips.
Marinette froze, her brain attempting to process what had just happened. Had her overactive imagination supplied the kiss she had been wanting so much? But she could still feel the ghost of Alya’s lips on hers. Alya had kissed her? Alya had kissed her!
“Sorry.” Alya sounded uncharacteristically bashful. “I was going to wait until the end of the date but I couldn’t help myself. You’re just so great.”
Marinette met the eyes of her blushing girlfriend. Her girlfriend. Her best friend. Why had she been so scared? It was Alya. Beautiful, brave, funny, kind Alya. Why would she be afraid of expressing her love for Alya?
Without even thinking about it, Marinette leaned in and pressed her lips to Alya’s. It was clumsy and their noses bumped together awkwardly, but the moment their lips touched, she knew it was right. They lost track of how long they kissed on that park bench, illuminated by the soft light from the streetlight, but when they finally pulled apart, they were smiling and giggling softly.
“That was nice.” Marinette murmured, admiring Alya’s smiling eyes.
“Yeah.” She pressed their foreheads together and laughed joyfully.
Marinette sighed, her chest so full of happiness she thought it would burst. A nearby church chimed its bells and they were brought back to their senses.
“The reservation!” Marinette exclaimed as she checked her phone. “We can make it if we hurry.“ She gathered up her stuff and stood, still feeling flustered from the kiss.
Alya still sat on the bench, staring up at her with an amused smile. “I don’t care if we’re late, as long as I’m with you.”
Marinette blushed and looked away. “You’re a dork.” She wasn’t sure her heart could take Alya saying things like that.
Before she could start walking she felt arms come encircle her waist and pull her tight. Alya lifted her of her feet with ease and Marinette squealed.
“You’re too cute!” Alya said, laughing in her ear.
“No you.” Marinette turned back to look at her lovely, adorable girlfriend.
“You’re the cutest.” Before Marinette could argue back, Alya captured her lips in a brief, playful kiss before setting her back down.
Marinette’s cheeks hurt from smiling so hard. All of her previous fears disappeared. As they walked hand to the restaurant, she knew they would be all right.

Grey bedroom ideas – from the super glam to ultra modern
From atmospheric dark grey to light pastel grey, here we show you how to choose and update your bedroom with grey
If you’re looking for grey bedroom ideas, you’re in good company. On-trend grey is fast becoming the ‘new magnolia’ and seems to be everyone’s colour of choice when it comes to decorating.
High-street and designer outlets have cottoned on to this and are bursting with grey in all its multiple gradations and across every conceivable product – the only difficulty will be deciding what’s right for you.
Want more bedroom decorating inspiration? See all our bedroom ideas
Take your style into consideration when planning a grey colour scheme. If you prefer a modern bedroom, you may want deeper, more dramatic shades of grey. Team them with metal and glass for an industrial edge.
In a country, vintage or traditional bedroom scheme, bring in gentle powdery tones of blue or pink to temper the grey. One of the joys of decorating with grey is its sheer versatility – it looks great in absolutely any style of room as you will see with our grey bedroom ideas below.
1.Add warming accent shades of coral
Vibrant coral tones are an ideal complimentary shade for grey, helping to lend warm tones. This can be especially important in a bedroom, to avoid the grey being too cold and uninviting – not a welcome effect in a bedroom space. Another way to create a warming feel to a bedroom scheme is by incorporating layers of tactile faux fur textiles – from rugs beside the bed, to cushions and throws.
2. Accentuate grey walls with slate grey flooring
Whether tiled or carpeted, a slate grey flooring can create a striking contrast to accentuate grey walls. This works particularly well with pale grey walls to offer more of a contrast. The floor can act as the fifth wall for decoration, in line to the four walls.
Regardless of wallpaper or painted grey walls a strong slate grey floor can anchor the whole scheme – without dominating entirely. A dark flooring helps to give purpose.
3. Embrace nature with grey wood wallpaper
Don’t think by choosing a desired colour scheme you have to exclude any one trend. This birch wood wallpaper in a grey-scale colourway ticks all the box of on-trend print, while working perfectly in a grey bedroom decor. Paired with a grey upholstered headboard and occasional furniture helps to cement the grey scheme even further.
4. Paint a panelled wall in a sophisticated grey
Colin Poole
Wood panelling painted in a serene shade of grey provides the perfect backdrop for a sophisticated master bedroom. The wood panels helps to add a nod to coastal style, without being too OTT.
To add a further elegant touch two wall pendants  in chrome provide a hotel-like lighting solution. Mounted either side of the bed they make ideal bedside lamps. Chrome is the ideal choice of metallic to keep the grey tones cool. Crisp white linens layered with soft grey cushions and throws adds to the well put-together look.
5. Choose warming grey tones for a feminine feel
A grey that airs on the side of lilac can instantly lend a softer edge to the overall look in a bedroom. In a feminine feel boudoir you’re best to opt for warm shades that have an undertone of pink to ensure the grey feels warm, rather than cold. Team with rich golds, blush pinks and pretty florals to add further warmth.
6. Invite a cosy feel with warm greys
Make a room feel inviting with a warm grey that mixes well with other neutrals for a comfortable layered look. Tints of yellow can give these deeper greys a greenish hue, which touches of red can make them look brown through to purplish in some lights. Add pops of black, khaki or olive to green-tinted hues, or nude beige. With red warmed tones, try lilac or rose. Warmer greys can be used anywhere you want to create a cosy, enveloping feel – perfect for a north-facing room that needs the chill taking out of it.
7. Choose a chic combo
Muted and mellow, this chic combo gives pink a whole new gender-neutral identity. Whether you’re a fan of industrial chic, modern country, Scandi style or classic elegance, this colour pairing can be adapted to suit any taste. Blush pink and grey is such a delicate combo. Add luxe with pops of polish with metallics like gold, brass or copper which work well with this pairing. The trick is to treat them as a finishing touch to help lift the scheme and prevent it looking flat.
8. Select the right shade of grey
Picking a grey for your walls is rather like choosing a white paint – there are far more to sift through than you might ever imagine. To get the best look for your space, try out plenty of samples on your walls and see how they work in different lights before committing. This soft grey sits beautifully with luxe cream furnishings and comforting textiles, creating a harmonious scheme.
9. Wow without vibrant colour

Grey is ideal for the colour shy, and easily creates beautiful schemes full of wow factor. This sumptuous room has no brights in sight, but is none the less for it. In fact, with the leafy print wallpaper, Gustavian headboard and amazing sunburst mirror, it’s a masterclass in decorating with grey.

10. Add zing with lime accents
Don’t feel that you have to ban bright colours from a grey room, though. With its neutral look, grey is super versatile and works well with many a block colour, as you can see in this stylish room with lime-green accents. Choose tactile fabrics and opulent furniture designs to make your scheme feel special – this chaise longue is definitely on our wish lists.
11. Give grey a rustic feel
Grey schemes can be totally sleek, but they can also be charmingly rustic. Immaculately painted walls don’t need to be paired with glossy furniture – distressed finishes look amazing, too. This room has a beautifully Scandi-country feel, and the ‘marshmallow’-like bedding and soft-coloured accessories keep the decor natural and relaxed.
12. Be inspired by hotel chic
If you love a hotel getaway, why not create some of the magic back at home. Signature pieces such as textural wallpaper, framed black and white prints and an upholstered headboard will make you feel like you’re on a city break every day of the week. In this stylish room, a mixture of subtle patterns and block greys act as a neutral base for the standout monochrome bed, which keeps the scheme classic and totally contemporary.
13. Search for the blue tones within grey
Accessories such as cushions have a massive role to play despite their compact size. In this room, their impact is two-fold: first of all, the block-coloured blues pick out the blue tones in the grey wall paint; and secondly the hello cushion adds instant modern appeal. Not bad for such small objects.
14. Paint a subtle feature wall
In an eaves or attic bedroom, make decorative use of sloping walls and ceilings. In this room, a gentle grey has been used on the feature wall to offset the white paint used elsewhere. The contrast emphasises the lovely lines of the architecture, opening up what is quite a small space. Darker grey has been limited to lighting, bed and throw here, with exquisite touches of pattern on cushions and a primrose armchair that warms up the greys.
15. Take a simple but effective – approach
If deep grey is a bit scary in a small bedroom, accessorise with it rather than decorating with it. This grey bedroom is actually a completely white room, but the luxurious velvet bed throw, cushions and smart Roman blind dominate the space. An open shelving unit positioned behind a bed can function as headboard and bedside tables as well as storage.
16. Drape beautiful floral fabrics
Pick mid grey for walls but keep ceiling and woodwork white for a sophisticated backdrop to a bedroom decorating scheme. Look for a modern take on the four poster bed – this darkwood version has something of the East about it. Soften the frame by draping with a silk or satin floral fabric – this one is in a pretty, toning pink.
17. Embrace a bygone era
If you are going all out for glamour, pay attention to your headboard. Choose an ornate scrolling design that will set the benchmark for the rest of the decorating scheme – this one sports a burnished silver finish. Look for a wallpaper print that can emulate its ornate detailing and bring in mirrors and polished chrome lighting. Silver finishes have a natural affinity with lilac so use it as your accent shade on bedding.
 18. Make it metallic
Metallic materials and silver tones bring elegance and glamour to a grey scheme. This tile-effect wallpaper in distressed shades of pewter adds intensity to this striking bedroom scheme, which is finished with Prussian blue velvets and faux furs. Different metallic touches can keep the overall grey scheme cool or add warmth – depending which finish you opt for.

19. Mix your hues
Dark floorboards set against white walls could look harsh, but a grey wall makes the scheme easier on the eye. Black and white prints and monochrome bed linen unite the soft furnishings with the decor and give this master bedroom a contemporary look.

20. Pick the perfect backdrop
A light grey colour is a more welcoming and relaxed alternative to white, and proves that going grey doesn’t have to mean dark and moody. A brilliant option for bright and airy bedrooms, this shade prevents the space becoming stark and provides a soft backdrop for a mix of original arts, crafts and retro details.
21. Venture over to the dark side
Grey is a cosy choice for a bedroom, especially in its darker tones. It also provides a fantastic contrast to bold, graphic patterns, such as the chevrons on this upholstered headboard. Soften the look with pops of pink in your accessories and add extra glow with exposed squirrel cage lightbulbs on colourful cables – these will also make a neat alternative to bedside table lamps if you’re short on space.
22. Add subtle tone on tone pattern
This bedroom uses shades of grey to create a calming haven. The feature wallpapered wall, while covered in a busy pattern, uses the palette of grey and white, which softens it. The colour theme continues throughout the room, with grey walls complementing bedside furniture. Different tones appear in the soft furnishings to ensure the colour theme does not become monotonous.

23. Turn up the heat with pink
To avoid an overly masculine or dark look, flashes of bright colour can be used to break up the scheme and add a modern edge. Cerise pink highlights work brilliantly with the grey scheme in this stylish bedroom and immediately draw the eye to certain parts of the room. The spotty bed is a big attention grabber, too.

Anatomy of a Scene - First Reformed (2018, Dir. Paul Schrader)
The Magical Mystery Tour
Leading up to this scene we have learnt that Reverend Toller (Ethan Hawke) is burdened by a persistent health issue. He is burdened by grief; he has lost a son at war and his marriage has subsequently collapsed. He is burdened by guilt; a soon to be father and environmental activist whom he was counselling has recently taken his own life.  He now consoles the widow of this man. He is keeping a journal documenting his thoughts and desperations.
Tumblr media
General Observations on Style
First Reformed is part of a group of films that Schrader has made which focus on ‘lonely men in rooms’ (Schrader 2000); these films share similar thematic and stylistic concerns.  The stylistic choices are commonly rooted in psychological realism and noir aesthetics.  Examples of such in First Reformed include the use of voice-over narration as a through line into the psyche and machinations of the protagonist. Voice-over can often be used as narrative crutch to divulge exposition or convey the message of the film, yet here it is used primarily as a revelatory technique to present private thoughts and inconsistencies.  The colour palette designed for the film is stark and muted, featuring dominant shades of black, brown, white, and green.  You can also see from the examples of Alexander Dynan’s cinematography below that attention has been directed towards the use of light and shadow.  Rev. Toller’s home contains few principal light sources and prominent shadows are cast, which evoke the chiaroscuro used within noir to symbolise hidden turmoil and slippery morality.
Although Schrader does not make films in a transcendental style, he has used nods towards this style within his work before. First Reformed shares more stylistic similarities with this style than any of his previous films, and actually seems designed as an exploration of transcendental ideas confronted by psychological realism. As such, the decision has been taken to make the film in the more austere academy ratio (1.371 : 1), calling to mind great proponents of transcendental style like Robert Bresson and Yasujirô Ozu.  The tighter composition can also inform our understanding of Rev. Toller’s psychology, perhaps suggesting claustrophobia and a world closing in on him. The duration of each shot is longer than those found in your typical Schrader film.  In addition, First Reformed is covered mainly through static shots and features no over-the-shoulder shots - techniques Schrader identified as being key tools within transcendental cinema.  He notes that the purpose of these techniques is to encourage the viewer to lean into the film and consider the material, arguing that they are “not to make you emote, but to make you understand…designed to gradually replace empathy with awareness” (Schrader 2018).   Another technique that encourages the audience to lean in and engage with the material is the lack of non-diegetic sound, which is typically used for illustrative purposes.  First Reformed features no non-diegetic sound until the 65th minute mark, when Brian Williams’ score finally begins to seep into the film.  This happens almost mid-way through the film and immediately after Rev. Toller begins to search through troubling climate change material collated by the deceased activist he was counselling.  The inclusion of the score at this point seems to signify to the audience that Rev. Toller’s psychological turmoil is turning darker, perhaps irrecoverably so.
Scene Opens
Rev. Toller’s voice-over leads the audience into The Magical Mystery Tour scene, remarking that he has ‘removed the previous pages [from his journal].  They were written under delirium, but [he is] determined to continue’.  Visually the scene opens on a fragmented perspective of Rev. Toller as his dark figure is glimpsed writing through a reflection in a mirror.  Rev. Toller’s voiceover remarks that ‘it’s hard to struggle against torpor.  [He] must set pen to paper’ and we cut to an overhead shot that illustrates pages have been ripped from the journal.  The juxtaposition of the narration, which suggests a newfound clarity of thought, and the image, a partially viewed Rev. Toller, is telling here - the film has alerted us to the unreliability of its narrator, which is also beginning to manifest itself visually.
Tumblr media
The camera moves to a static wide shot which is composed fascinatingly.  Rev. Toller is viewed centre right of the frame in a far room in the distance, while centre left framed and foregrounded in the room closest to the camera sits a solitary chair.
Tumblr media
The rooms are particularly sparse so the eye becomes drawn to this chair which is somewhat improbably positioned.  It is difficult to imagine why somebody would take this position in an empty room.  Rev. Toller is now heavily drinking and pours a glass of whisky before being surprised by a knock at the door.  Hawke’s performance emotes surprise as he peers through the open door towards the main door (which lays offscreen).  He finishes the drink and walks to answer the door offscreen.  We hear him welcome Mary (the widow of the deceased activist) who anxiously enters the room confessing that she does not feel okay.
Of course, it is Mary who sits on the peculiarly placed chair, almost as if it had been placed there especially for this moment.  Perhaps in the drunken, hazy mind of Rev. Toller it had been.  Hawke’s performance is again very interesting here as he takes her coat, looks off screen, and then looks around briefly, like he too is disbelieving Mary’s presence here.
Tumblr media
We then have a simple series of medium-close ups as Rev. Toller and Mary converse. Perhaps most interesting to note during this exchange is the way that point of view shifts as the conversation progresses. As Rev. Toller is standing and Mary is sitting, the camera’s point of view has us looking downwards to a vulnerable Mary and upwards towards Rev. Tolller.  Yet as Mary confesses that her negative thoughts just keep ‘repeating and repeating’, words appropriate for Rev. Toller given his current state of mind, he kneels down to show attention and thus the point of view shifts dramatically.  We now look upwards towards a more commanding Mary and downwards towards Rev. Toller.  Mary explains the The Magical Mystery Tour, a playful act that she used to do with her late husband:
‘It sounds silly, but we would share a joint and lay on top of each other fully clothed.  Then we would try to get as much body contact as possible.  We would have our hands out and we would look straight into each others eyes and move them in unison, right, left, right, left…and then we would breathe in rhythm.’
The framing of Rev. Toller here is revealing, particularly alongside Hawke’s performance.  He appears completely transfixed by her story and gazes upwards, admiringly; the downwards point of view makes him appear small within the frame, childlike in his infatuation.  He is beguiled by this story of connection and intimacy. The description of The Magical Mystery Tour act is slightly unusual, yet more surreal is that Rev. Toller goes on to ask Mary if she would like to do this with him now, to which she replies yes.
Tumblr media
After an establishing wide shot to show Rev. Toller and Mary taking their position, we cut to an overhead shot that is particularly effective as it shows Mary’s body completely consuming the image of Rev. Toller as she lies on top of him - perhaps mirroring the idea that her presence in his thoughts is becoming all consuming too.
Tumblr media
The edit cuts to an extreme close-up of their faces.  It is here that the decision to adorn Mary with a white shawl is interesting, as within this frame it looks strikingly similar to the liturgical vestment that Rev. Toller wears when delivering sermons - enhancing a sense of connection between them.  The extremity of the close up allows us to pay attention to the performances of the actors. Amanda Seyfried playing Mary moves slowly up and down as she breathes deeply, while Hawke emotes complete stillness, like he has stopped breathing altogether.  There is a sensual control and dominance to Seyfried’s performance in this scene, which is in contrast to Hawke’s presentation of Rev. Toller, which is reticent and nervous.  It is Mary who initiates the opening of their palms so that they can connect more fully.  The tension established reaches its crescendo when Mary’s hair falls across the face of Rev. Toller.  Again, this consumes his image within the frame which could lead to the viewer sensing that Rev. Toller has been overwhelmed, or that he has given himself over to her fully.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Visually, transcendence is then made literal by the film.  This also confirms more clearly to the viewer that this scene reflects the psychology of Rev. Toller more than anything based in reality.  Dynan’s ethereal score begins, adding to the sense of the fantastical, and both the bodies float up from the ground.  The film is now breaking a number of its formal rules and this continues as the static shot is broken and the camera pans around the bodies as if it were floating too. The room fades to stars around them.
Tumblr media
A montage of images are used as the background to their [his] journey, and both characters appear like they are flying through the scene.  It is noteworthy that this spiritual and emotional connection to Mary is visualised alongside wondrous images of nature; mountains; green forests; oceans; coral reefs.  One might interpret that the joy of connecting with another individual has brought to Rev. Toller’s mind other great joys that God has bestowed on us through his creation.
Tumblr media
However, Rev. Toller is undergoing an extreme crisis of faith and this also begins to reflect itself psychologically through the images in the montage.  The camera pans upwards towards an overhead shot once again, and Rev. Toller´s image is no longer fully enveloped by Mary; instead he is anxiously peering over her shoulder as his worries begin to crash the fantasy.  The score does a lot of the illustrative work here as it shifts tone from ethereal to a more industrial, drone style.  The images we now see are heavy traffic followed by thousands of tyres on a scrapheap.  The camera pans further upwards and the characters exit the frame completely; an intimate moment now lost.  All that remains in the frame, and in the mind of Rev. Toller, are the following images: industrial factories bellowing smoke into the atmosphere; deforestation; an ocean of garbage covering streets; wild fires raging; a rusting shipping vessel littering the ocean.
Tumblr media
The tension within this crucial scene reflects the tension at the heart of First Reformed, and it is clear to see which thoughts are beginning to dominate our protagonists mind, in the most destructive of ways.
A slow fade to black.

A Beautiful 300 Square Meter (3230 sqft) Apartment For A Design Aficionado In Vienna
They say home is where the heart is and for one well-traveled design aficionado this couldn’t more true. Located in the lively 6th district in Vienna, this 300 sqm (3230 sqft) is a place for intimate gatherings among friends. You will notice the open-concept layout specifically designed for dinner parties and you won’t be able to miss the monochrome design skillfully executed by interior designer, Annabell Kutucu. Brimming with Mid-Century Modern charm, every inch of this apartment is uniquely exquisite. Features like the bright open floor plan and custom-made interiors make this home the modern marvel that we instantly fell in love with.
Light and airy white plasters the walls and contrasts against the dark furniture in this rustic living room. This apartment’s design loves to play with textural elements and the shabby chic coffee table perched over two throw rugs is no exception.
Making white walls and concrete floors feel homey is quite the feat, but this living room makes it look effortless. Everything from the Mid-Century Modern shelving to the metal floor lamp has been well thought out and stitched together to create this cozy haven. Whether you’re itching for a quiet night in or an intimate get together, this living room is ready!
Oversized windows that flood this high-ceiling room with natural light make this the perfect dwelling for an indoor plant. Here we find the loud and proud bird of paradise thriving in the corner. A great design choice with its high stalks and large leaves that add a whisper of color to an otherwise monochromatic palette.
Having a living room that opens up to the dining room creates the perfect place to host family and friends. You will later see that the kitchen is also conveniently located on the other side of the dining room table.
A close up of the divine texture that blankets the rustic coffee table. The array of textures and fine detail present in this home unquestionably elevate it to a whole new level.
Tall shelving dramatizes the high ceilings, which in turn makes this home look even more spacious. Decorated with various books and pottery finds, each piece is methodically placed on the shelf to create a well curated collection that is anything but cluttered.
Wood, metal, and linen intermingle to have a party of their own in this close-up shot. The color variance may be slight, but the various textures creates a smorgasbord of visual interest
This Mid-Century Modern console table is a great option for storing odds and ends that aren’t worthy of daily display. Not only that, but it is also elegantly styled to show off select pieces which highlight the black and white abstract painting.
High texture envelops many of the larger finishings in this home, but it is also present on smaller design touches.
A modern floor lamp ensures that the stylish shelves are always illuminated enough to make out the owner’s well curated collection of books and pottery.
A minimalist approach has been taken to the bedside table by subbing in a rustic wooden stool. With no room for classic lamp, a modern wall sconce has been fitted to the space instead.
Filled with modern simplicity, this industrial workspace is both functional and stylish. A rustic floating desk is highlighted by the abstract, geometric painting that hangs above. This framed piece may be simple, but its rosy hues make it a knock out statement piece in this bedroom.
A luxe designer table lamp and black chair incorporate some raw, metal elements in to this home office. Once again we see a vast array of textures present in a small sampling of this home.
The floating desk adds to this spaces minimalistically chic essence. All while open baskets allows the throw pillows rich aesthetic to be enjoyed, even when they aren’t on the bed.
Layers upon layers of textural elements everywhere. Even the books are in on the action!
A glimpse in to the kitchen and all its simplistic glory! Black track lighting highlights this divine room, including the open shelving that allows for more display space.
Instead of the usual kitchen items and gadgets on display, we see more pieces from the pottery collection. A charming, wooden dinette set has also been fitted in this space for more intimate dinners.
Less is more in spaces like this, where without unnecessary clutter, simplistically beautiful pieces get their time in the spotlight. We adore the mix of vintage and new, with the use of the radiator and modern sink console.
Peek around the corner and we get a better view of the exquisite vessel sink duo. An oversized mirror makes sure that nothing feels small about this space. We also appreciate the stylish under counter baskets. Perfect for holding either extra towels or laundry.
The black marble backsplash is an exquisite choice, especially paired with the industrial faucets. This space uses industrial elements not necessarily as statement pieces, as many homes do, but it seamlessly incorporates them in to its design to create a dynamic flow.
Baskets are highly utilized in this home and they’re a great way to stylishly stash or display linens, clothing or magazines. This pair has a prominent weave that is highly textural and definitely makes a statement in this space.
What we can only imagine is a souvenir from the home owner’s travels. We would love to know the story behind these unique pieces and their tribal vibe!
This shelving may be similar in color to the shelves found in the rest of the apartment, but the wall-mount style sets it apart by leaving plenty of floor room to spare. Much like the other shelving though, it is expertly styled with books and other stylish finds.
An entrance full of style and everything you need. A slat-style bench and floor mirror come to your aid for tasks like putting on shoes and making last minute adjustment. Then there is the radiance of the black and white wall art that ensures that this room still packs quite the design punch.
From the big picture design to the minuscule details, every inch of this home is methodically thought out. Annabell Kutucu took what could of been a boring apartment and made it in to a simplistic home that’s rich in texture, design and style!

Get In Mopar Muscle Magazine & Win Auto Meter Gauges!
For the second time in Mopar Muscle history, we’re swinging the doors wide open and letting every Mopar on the planet get featured, and not just on the internet site, we’re talking the print magazine. We don’t care what it is, if it’s a Mopar, we’re running it. You read right: Every single car gets featured. It sounds kind of insane, but look at it this way—you spend all your time and money building your pride and joy, then send pix of your finished project to your favorite magazine, only to get rejected. I know, because I’m the rejector-in-chief here at Mopar Muscle. I feel sorta bad about that, but there are only so many trees in the forest on which to print a magazine. Tough choices must be made in the name of economic reality.
Here’s the thing—just because a car isn’t packing a 700hp engine and isn’t loaded down with high-tech suspension, big brakes, a rollcage, or a fancy pedigree doesnt mean it’s not interesting to people. Even cars with dents or rust—four-doors for goodness sakes—are exciting to people into those kind of rides. Management told us nobody would buy a mag packed full of regular-guy cars. Well, as management sometimes is—they were wrong. For one issue, we let regular-guy Mopes take over the joint, and it was always one of our best-selling issues. We have no reason to think it won’t work again, so here’s the deal…
We want you to send us photos of your Mopar, and thanks to the Auto Meter, their Custom Shop is going to give the guy with the best photos a free set of custom gauges—up to $800 in value. You can read more about the Auto Meter Custom Shop in the sidebar, but we’ll just say this for now—the Custom Shop can build you virtually any kind of customized gauge package you want, from special colors on the faces and needles, to unique ticking, fonts, and lighting. If you can think of it, the Custom Shop can build it. And by the way, $800 can get you a pretty nice package.
First off, remember that this is a photo contest, not a car show. You can check out the list of photo tips for the finer points, but we aren’t going to print anything that’s blurry, dark, cropped off, blocked, time/date stamped, or out of focus. Those entries will get tossed right away. You will also need to take your pictures with a digital camera, because for print, we need digital photo files in jpg format. The image size must be at least 3,000 x 2,000 pixels to guarantee clarity at the printed size. After you take your photos, burn them onto a CD, DVD, or USB jump drive. Please limit the number of photos to 20 or less.
As we are announcing this in the middle of winter, some will be tempted to roll the old girl out into the arctic wilderness and shoot her in the snow and slush. We’d like you to hold off on that, and wait until the snow melts. Our deadline is well out into the beginning of June for that reason, so pick some nice weather in early spring to get it done. (Congrats if you live in the Mohave Desert!) Consider this contest announcement as your impetus for updating or finishing that project in your garage. If you live in better climes like we do here in Southern California, have at it.
After the photos are taken, write us a one-page story telling us about your car. Include all the important facts like why you bought it, when you got it, what you did to it, where you take it, fun trips you’ve taken, your history as a Mopar fanatic, and people you’ve met with it—anything you want to tell us is fair game. No car lives in a vacuum—it is a reflection of its owner, so make sure you tell us your story. (If you leave out the story, we may not print your car.) Hint: keep it to one page.
The last thing you need to do is fill out the one-page tech sheet printed here in this story. You can cut it out or you can photocopy it, but just make sure to include it and fill it out legibly and completely. Don’t forget technical details, especially on the engine, remembering that the nuts and bolts are often what people want to read about. Experience has shown that when tech sheets are scribbled out in haste, it results in mangled names and hometowns. Don’t be that guy!
When you’re done shooting the pictures, burning the CD/DVD or jump drive, writing your one-page story, and filling out the tech sheet (don’t forget to provide contact info and sign it!), put them all in an envelope and send them to us at The Enthusiast Network, attn: Mopar Muscle Photo Contest, 1821 East Dyer Rd., Santa Ana, CA 92705. Send us these three simple things (digital photos, one-page story, tech sheet) and you are guaranteed to get into our December 2017 Readers’ Rides issue!
The Rules
We plan on printing every entry that we get for the Mopar Muscle Photo Contest Sponsored By Auto Meter, but for that to happen, entrants need to follow all of these rules:
• You must provide digital photos on a CD, DVD, or USB jump drive. They must be in JPEG format and at least 3,000 x 2,000 pixels. You must provide color prints for all the photos you burn on your CD. • All photos must be in focus, well-lit, and the car must not be chopped off or blocked by obstacles. No time/date stamps. • Write a one-page story about your car and include it in your entry package. The more interesting, the better—we may quote from it. • Completely and legibly fill out all the information and specs in the accompanying entry form, and send it in with your entry. • The owner of the car must be the photographer. You give The Enthusiasts Network (parent company of Mopar Muscle) and Auto Meter permission to publish your photos in print and electronically over the interwebs and such. • Please observe the entry submission deadline for the contest, which is Wednesday, June 14, 2017. Late entries may be omitted from publication. • The Mopar Muscle Photo Contest Sponsored By Auto Meter is open to all Chrysler-bodied, Chrysler-powered cars. AMC is ok. Trucks and Jeeps at our discretion, space permitting. • Your entry package must be sent physically to our editorial office, and include a photo CD, DVD, or USB jump drive, prints for all photos, a one-page cover story, and the completed entry form/tech sheet (a copy is OK). • We will notify the winner no later than Thursday, July 13, 2017. All entries will be published in the December 2017 Readers’ Rides issue of Mopar Muscle magazine, on sale September 15, 2017.
10 Tips For Better Photos
• At the bare minimum, your photos should be well composed, in focus, sharp, and well lit. • The entire car should be in the photo, other cars should not be in the shot, and you should not be shooting the rear of the car. • Try shooting from different vantage points in addition to eye level. Try shooting at twilight or sunrise for a more dramatic effect. • If you turn the front tires, don’t aim the tread at the camera—show us the face of the wheel. • Try using a reflector to bounce sunlight into the grille. Reflectors can be bought, or made out of aluminum foil and cardboard. A white sheet is good too. A large white board or an off-camera flash can do the same job. • Use a tripod to steady your camera. You can also use the hood of another car, the ground, or a railing if you don’t have a tripod. • Don’t adjust the color, contrast, or brightness of your images with your computer—this will just remove important detail and make it difficult to print. • Find a unique or beautiful background. A park, beach, historical area, fairgrounds, run-down industrial area, empty country road, or airfield tarmac can be a great spot. Keep off the grass, dirt, mud, and gravel. Stay away from painted parking lot lines. • Experiment with different exposures. Use the exposure compensation feature (look for something labeled “EV” on your camera menu) to increase the exposure if your images are too dark. • Bring friends to help with reflectors, flashes, to direct traffic, to move extraneous debris, to read the camera owner’s manual, and to help you move the car.
Auto Meter Custom Shop Gauges
Until recently, only the most lavishly equipped machines on the show car circuit had one-off instrumentation. Then Auto Meter came up with a great idea: set up a custom shop for gauges so that anybody could get exactly what they want. The Auto Meter Custom Shop lets customers design their own gauges with unique color faces, ticking, pointers, cover glass, fonts, bezels, and lighting. If it’s part of a gauge, the Auto Meter Custom Shop can do it for you. After logging on to the Auto Meter Custom Shop website, download the Custom Shop configurator, and start picking out your gauges with all their features. As you build your dream gauge package, the gauges take shape right on the screen. You can try out several different designs, save them for future reference, or compare them. You can even print them out and try them in your car before ordering. And all while you’re building your virtual gauges, the cost is updated and displayed with every revision! You’ll also be quite surprised how affordable it is; when compared to a standard set of catalog gauges, it’s only a few extra bucks. Once you order them, they’ll show up at your door in a beautiful handcrafted wood box. They’ll look so nice, you won’t even want to put them in your car!
Our photo contest winner in 2015 was Tony Lucas and his 1970 AMC AMX. Tony is from Abbotsford, BC, Canada, and won $800 worth of Auto Meter Custom Shop gauges with some beautiful shots he took during a massive cross-continent road trip!
2015 runner-up Scott Boden caught our eye with his 1973 Plymouth Duster due to his well-composed shots, and the transplaned Gen III Hemi under the hood.
We dug Chuck Smith’s 1971 Plymouth Duster so much, we contacted him for a full photo shoot. We’re always looking for cars to feature. Sending in your machine to our photo contest could make that happen!
Runner-up Chris Gard nailed the look and stance of his 1969 Dodge Charger perfectly. Good thing his wife he insisted he keep it for the day he could finally restore it. A good woman is critical to the success of any hot rod project!
A different point of view can really change the look of a car, as proven by Jo Gardner’s picture of this 1969 Plymouth GTX.
We are total suckers for off-beat Mopars, like Kevin Bollinger’s 1980 Dodge Mirada. Kevin took a lot of pride in composing a really cool shot in an interesting location.
Jared Reese sent in pix of his 1973 Dodge Charger SE. The day-two look is hot right now, and his barn location added plenty of flavor.
This day-two look 1970 Plymouth Cuda was spiced up by a period-correct storefront.
We like how Kenneth Herpel of Mebane, NC composed this shot of his 1969 Dodge Dart GTS. Low and mean!
Late-model Mopars got in on the action, and this grounds-level telephoto shot makes Joe Seoane’s 2008 SRT8 look that much more aggressive.
Paul Kinzer found a nice city park on an overcast day. The even light softened the shadows and added detail to the ’65 Plymouth’s shape.
Print this photo contest form, fill it out, and send it in with prints of your pictures, a CD (or USB) with digital images, and a short letter about your car!

40 Transitional Bedrooms That Beautifully Bridge Modern And Traditional
Perhaps one of the most difficult looks to master, the transitional design style is often defined by its smooth combination of classic and contemporary elements. Without careful balance, these spaces can easily blur into eclectic territory – a problem solved by careful forethought and curation. This post focuses on transitional inspiration for the bedroom. We’ve selected 40 images that show transitional style at its best, along with tips and techniques you can use to implement this aesthetic within your own home. Dive into the bedrooms below to see the breadth of possibilities transitional design can offer.
Visualizer: Horizon Render Vizualization Studio    Transitional bedrooms can draw features from any era. So how do these features come together as one cohesive and recognizable style? There are a few hallmark qualities you can expect from transitional spaces: curvaceous furniture profiles, cohesive neutral color palettes, and classic architectural details. But bending the rules is half the fun, as this bedroom does with its brilliant harvest gold bedframe.
Visualizer: Horizon Render Vizualization Studio    Here, rounded elements like the platform bed and vanity dresser establish this space with modern up-to-date appeal. Yet other elements feel as if they were plucked from a different era – especially the fascinating chandelier with its Art Deco influences. The wallpaper showcases one relatively easy way that anyone can bring a touch of vintage flair to a bedroom while tying the look together.
Visualizer: Reem Elgafi    Elegant boiserie is a fantastic way to set the stage for a transitional bedroom – a traditional element that takes well to modern color palettes. The large area rug is one piece that embraces current trends without reserve, decorated with a geometric print that captures the eye and adds contrast to the sleek surfaces that surround it.
Visualizer: BAX Design   Again, boiserie makes a dramatic showing in this high-ceiling bedroom. Other architectural elements like the cove ceiling bring the look back to perfectly modern. Upholstery choices give the modern furniture a classic look – like the dark leather that envelopes the Swoon Lounge by Space Copenhagen.
Visualizer: Oxygen - Architectural Visualization   Calm neutral colors are a common palette in transitional themes. This room starts with shades of light cream, complemented with glimmering gold accents throughout. On the other side of the temperature spectrum, blue statement pieces stand as focal points – the Ball armchairs by Mattia Bonetti, the liquid-like side chair inspired by Jacopo Foggini’s Ella Collection.
Visualizer: Nada Shehab    When designing a transitional interior that sticks to a neutral palette, it makes sense to build on a rich variety of textures to create visual interest. This bedroom combines layers of fabric and upholstery alongside dramatic metallics like the wall art and gorgeous pendant lights.
Visualizer: Horizon Render Vizualization Studio    Another transitional design color strategy involves vintage-inspired palettes. Here, the teal and amber accents reflect a selection of interior colors popular in the 1960s. These lovely shades gain such a current presence within this sleek bedroom.
Visualizer: Ekaterina Skitsko   A grand upholstered headboard in the lightest blush centers this room well, the eye drawn to a circular chandelier in the center. Framing the wallpaper within the boiserie panels is an economical approach – this is the Amazilia pattern by Harlequin.
Visualizer: Reem Omar    Transitional bedrooms can adopt darker themes as well. This one does a great job introducing darker elements while still feeling light and neutral.
Visualizer: Xudojnik Dizayner    A rare example of a transitional bedroom that goes daring with bold hues, this bedroom combines the clean lines and metallic accents of Art Deco with the flowery organic details of its predecessor Art Nouveau. The architecture wavers between classic arched windows and ultra-modern ceiling configurations.
Visualizer: Hai Doan    One inexpensive way to underscore a transitional theme is to hang recognizable era-specific art. These iconic Marilyn Monroe prints certainly make a strong statement.
Visualizer: Diana Tarakanova   Crown molding and delicate boiserie make this space the perfect candidate for transitional design. One of the standout elements in this space is the upholstery – the button tufting on the headboard and pleated backrest on the chair embody classic luxury.
Visualizer: Martin Kováčik   The ultra-modern accent wall would look right at home in a striking minimalist arrangement, but this bedroom goes in a different direction. The cozy button-tufted bed and bench exert an impressive amount of influence to draw this space back toward transitional style.
Visualizer: ATO Studio   Simplicity often makes transitional themes more effective. This bedroom uses accessories sparingly – restricted to a pair of sculptural table lamps. A faint nature scene on the wall provides decoration without overshadowing the delightful textures that make this space so special.
Visualizer: Kirill Gordeyev   But simplicity is not always the only answer. This bedroom makes spectacular use of unconventional decorative details, like the drawer pulls and the mirror frame. The undulating curves of the chandelier play into the elegance and drama of this creative space.
Visualizer: Thanh Hang Vu   These classic furniture profiles feel fresh and contemporary thanks to the calming transitional color palette. While every item in this space is worthy of admiration, the chandelier prompts special attention – this piece from Serip Lighting features organic forms that bridge across design eras gracefully.
Visualizer: Stanislav Kaminskyi    Dark and rugged – this transitional bedroom takes a strong departure from standard themes. The color palette embraces all the transitional favorites but takes them deeper with greys, leathers, and matte black.
Visualizer: Thanh Hang Vu    Another fantastic space that centers around a dramatic Art Deco headboard wall. This space uses clean lines to its advantage, allowing more delicate details like the artwork and the palm frond lamps to capture attention.
Designer: Bellas Artes    Visualizer: Nurik Karanavidani    Sapphire blue textiles set this transitional bedroom apart. Modern elements include the IC pendant lamps by Michael Anastassiades, a handsome choice alongside vintage-inspired accessories like mid-century modern starburst mirror.
Designer: Angelina Kostina & Balcon.studio   Visualizer: Irina Rybnikova    What a charming transitional bedroom! Not only does this space dip outside of the more common casual neutrals, it also takes successful risks with playful décor. The duck feet lamps are from Porta Romana, the webbed chandelier by Marcel Wanders.
Visualizer: Irina Rybnikova    Playful patterns offer an updated take on transitional simplicity. The rug, accent wall, and curtains add depth to the palette of clean textures and subdued colors.
Visualizer: Panova Viktoria    This transitional bedroom exudes luxury. Shining satins, glimmering gold, pearlescent finishes, and layers of rich textiles give this space an opulent quality that ties the decorative elements together despite their diverse design styles.
Visualizer: Marina Selivanova    Because of its neutral and flexible nature, transitional style meshes well with other décor themes as well. This bedroom embraces hints of East Asian design influence. Where western spaces would have plain boiserie, this bedroom employs elaborate fretwork. Where contemporary homes would have transparent glass, this space uses frosted panels.
Visualizer: Marina Selivanova    Now, let’s look at a few uncommon color accents for transitional interiors. Ruby red is a very intense choice – opulent, passionate, and bold.
Visualizer: Marina Selivanova    Pastel blues are common in transitional design, but this deep cobalt blue is a divergent choice. Its appearance throughout the more traditionally-inspired parts of the room – like the chair and pouf – offer a counterbalance to the remarkably modern headboard.
Colorful accents can also sway a transitional space more toward the modern side.
Visualizer: Kamran Kadirov    Emerald green is an especially suitable color for this theme – timeless and elegant, and a great fit alongside the metallics and neutrals so common in transitional interiors.
Visualizer: Leyla Salayeva    This bedroom demonstrates strong contrasts between modern and traditional elements. The boiserie here is especially ornate, while the bed and furniture all maintain the clean lines of perfectly contemporary design.
Visualizer: Irina Maslova    Many of the features that define transitional style focus on achieving a level of cohesiveness as to avoid looking eclectic – but that does not mean that transitional bedrooms must avoid eclectic details altogether. This space has fun combining modern zig zag prints with rustic cowhide patterns, an antique rug with contemporary printed pillows. The result is charming!
Visualizer: Leyla Salayeva    Smart color blocking makes this spacious bedroom feel warmer and more intimate. The accent wall and rug work together to define the bounds of the sleeping space, punctuated by a grand upholstered bed in the center.
Visualizer: RAL Designs    Decorative paneling adds decorative appeal to almost every surface of this handsome bedroom – the large upholstered headboard, the dramatic accent wall, the built-in side tables, even the edges of the platform bed.
Visualizer: Slava Korchagin    This bedroom keeps things especially simple. This is an example of an accessible transitional style that anyone can emulate: swap in your own favorite minimalist side tables, upholstered headboard, subtle accent wall, etc.
Visualizer: Slava Korchagin    Here is an example of a transitional bedroom that would be accessible to those with a reasonable budget. It does include a few larger investments like the crown molding and cove lighting, but otherwise the furniture and materials remain relatively straightforward.
Visualizer: Slava Korchagin    Minimalist pendant lights, minimalist side tables, classic artwork, and a classic accent wall – this bedroom shows how elements from two completely different themes can contribute to a flawless transitional space.
Visualizer: Anton Krat    A spectacular example of high-end transitional style. This bedroom steals the show right from the first glance with its mirrored wall panels and crystal chandelier.
Visualizer: Dinara Yusupova    Understated luxury has its appeal as well. This bedroom starts with the smooth and simple materials common to transitional décor but sprinkles opulent touches throughout – the sculptural table lamps, the crystal pendant light.
Visualizer: Anton Krat    Extraneous decoration is uncommon in the world of transitional interior design trends. However, this room does not avoid personal touches. Instead, it uses a large headboard to create separation between the transitional sleeping area and the living space filled with books and collectibles.
Visualizer: Anton Krat    This beautiful space is carefully curated to create the ideal balance between classic and contemporary, luxury and accessibility.
Visualizer: Omar Maghrabi    Transitional styles aren’t always subdued! This one embraces opulence. The brilliant gold accent wall and matching globe pendants, the Lindsey Adelman chandelier. Every decorative aspect feels extravagant while the center of the room – the bed – maintains a striking contrast of calm simplicity.
Visualizer: Reem Elgafi    And finally, a quick glimpse at a lovely transitional bedroom from above. This style is great for small spaces thanks to its streamlined character, but also scales well to spacious rooms because of its inherent flexibility.
