shitty summary: Natsume is an aspiring actress who has only been playing corpses until now. That is until she crosses the path of Nara Limi, a world-renowned photographer, who, with one picture, launches her career.
where to watch: dramacool
grade: 8,5/10
pros:
- this is easily in the top 5 most stunning series I’ve ever watched. every single scene is full of color and light. it seems so lively while at the same time too beautiful to be real if that makes sense. knowing now that the director is also a photographer is absolutely not surprising
- the fashion (and haircuts, everyone has their hair dyed & I stan)!!! gosh this is the best fashion I’ve ever witnessed in a drama, period. it fits in so well with the cinematography to create a cohesive picture. also I want some of those outfits soooo bad lol
- the acting was just top-notch. every main actress & actor had their moment to shine without being over the top the rest of the time. I just have legit nothing bad to say because every performance was great
- it took me a while to realize it, but this is quite the feminist series. first it’s directed by a woman, which is always great. but most of all almost all of the main characters are women, and they’re all incredibly complex and diverse women at that. they’re shown as talented & hard working while also having vulnerabilities. I just love seeing shows revolving around women so much, they always touch me in a different way
- it was so surprising to see a japanese show with two lgbtq+ main characters, especially a lesbian character. I know it’s a netflix show so there was more flexibility about representation but still, I really appreciated it bc it doesn’t happen often in jdramas
- I was honestly surprised to realize that this show wasn’t gonna be moralizing about being rich. usually when a show centers around rich people (especially when it also has average people too like this drama), there’s always this undertone of criticizing them & showing how priviledged they are. which I can sometimes appreciate a lot. but here it’s not the case & I appreciate it too bc this is not the main focus of the story at all. this story is mainly about having dreams & friendship, and it happens to everyone no matter if they’re rich or poor. so I really liked the fact that it subverted my expectations in that way
cons:
- the story is quite cheesy and unrealistic. it didn’t make me like the show less at all, but it did take me slightly out of the story a few times. especially since I genuinely think they could’ve made the story a bit more realistic while still following essentially the same storyline
- I would’ve really appreciated seeing the lgbtq+ characters get a happy ending in their romantic life. though they do have a happy ending, I feel like they both get their hearts broken in the process
- frankly, the show could’ve been longer. I understand that 9 episodes for a netflix show is already a bit long, but I felt like there was still quite a lot of story to tell. I especially wanted to see where natsume’s career was going to go. I also felt that bc they didn’t have much time they had to fastforward a little bit too much in my opinion. so I would’ve preferred if the show was 12 or 13 episodes instead of only 9
would I rewatch it: I’ll probably want to come back to those absolutely gorgeous scenes, so yes
