Incoherent Old Fashion Cupcake ramblings

I watched Old Fashion Cupcake last night and I've been in a delicious drama brainrot ever since.

This show is brilliant in every way, from acting to camera work to music to incorporating food into the character interactions to body language (y'all know what I'm talking about *smirks*)

As writing, narrative and character arc fiends, @lurkingshan and I ramble a lot about how shows wrap up all of its plotlines, how satisfying it is, and more importantly, how seamless it feels.

Old Fashion Cupcake has an office romance right at its core. Nozue and Togawa are co-workers, and Togawa is Nozue's subordinate. Which means as soon as they get together, Togawa working under Nozue will be a HR violation. One of them must be reassigned so there is no overlap in their reporting structure.

Now, this is in NO WAY a central conflict that the characters have to work through. But for me, as a viewer, it is a tiny, albeit noticeable problem that will arise wayyyyyy later in the narrative, and it would be oh-so-satisfying to have that plot thread resolved and tied up into a pretty bow within the show's runtime, without it taking focus away from the other, more important themes going on in the show.

And how do the writers do it? Nozue accepts a promotion as the head of another, newly-created department that will also relocate him to a different building. But his decision to move on to a different role is not motivated by the workplace rules, AT ALL. It is beautifully tied into how Nozue *wants* new experiences in his life now, thanks to Togawa.

The HR violation is a tertiary, almost nit-picky problem when compared to the major themes and character arc developments in the show. But it was not ignored and it was resolved exactly how it should be: as a happy coincidence that came with the closure of the main character's arc. So beautifully seamless that I want to cry.

I was rambling about this show to @waitmyturtles and she pointed out that the show's strong writing was certainly helped by the brilliant manga it was adapted from, created by Sagan Sagan. And now I'm very intrigued and might check out the manga (but in the far-off future, I am drowning in my drama watchlist atm lol). Also -- big shoutout to the screenwriter Miyamoto Takeshi. I know Japan is a pro in adapting from print/digital media to TV/movies, but to do it with such a grace? Ooooooof, all the flowers.

I highly doubt that my brainrot for this show ends here and I bet I will go on multiple OFC ramble sprees in the future. Until then, enjoy the resident OFC hamster who has no business being this fucking adorable and sexy.

just some tedbecca thoughts on the finale--

this episode really left me feeling like rebecca was in love with ted and it was not reciprocated, which was an incredibly terrible, awful feeling to feel after ... well, their entire history and the reason i loved their relationship in the first place! :’((((((( (1.02 - “biscuits” as mission statement for their whole relationship, god damn it!) her begging him to stay and explaining all the ways she’d thought out how it could work (sounding like a tumblrina!!!!) and saying that she wanted it to be both of them or neither of them, and him just not engaging with her even to talk to her, felt so horrible. ted!!!!! you weren’t supposed to be the one to do this to her!!!!!! you were supposed to be the one who was warm and kind and loved her and STAYED!!!!!!!

ted basically felt like he became rebecca’s michelle here, and it was like watching a nightmare before my eyes.

(i’m kind of wondering if sudeikis was just zoned out acting-wise this season due to all the stress and highly publicized personal problems. and that’s part of why ted felt so consistently cold??)

ooooooof, this one hurt! this one hurt a lot.

also the fakeout at the beginning was truly the work of satan himself.

also, if not tedbecca then why the romcom couple from the romcommunism episode sitting in their seats in the stands right after they sat there alone together in an emotional scene??????

(this would be a very interesting place to end a season three with a season four on the way. will ted go back?? will rebecca date boat guy, or is ted her true love?? will those crazy kids ever work it out??

actually, everything about this -- even tedbecca aside -- felt like an interesting place to end a season three and then pick it up again. GOD, THE HUMANITY!)

it has been an honor to tragically clown with you all these past few years, my friends. i am so sorry to anyone i might have hooked on this show with the concept of tedbecca!

p.s. fricking boat guy! i was so happy that he wasn’t with rebecca at any of the future events, mwahaha. maybe they hung out for like five minutes off a boat and were like, “nah.” you had to be on a boat, having recently fallen into a canal, for that to work.

One of the things I love so much (and that shows how much thought they put into this production), is that it's only in the scenes in Ning's sanctum that we see Xiu in this golden gentle light - it's like his one place of peace, the one remnant of childhood innocence.

(also the choice of him shadowed and her in the light in the above shot!)

Ooooooof!!!!

The thing is - I've seen people on MDL complain about Ning and compare her negatively to Ka Dan and Xiujia - but the question is not whether she's someone you'd pick to be in love with yourself or even if she's your fave among the ladies. The question is whether it makes sense that she's someone who fits Xiu and she's the only one we met who does.

I mean, I prefer Ka Dan and Xiujia myself in terms of liking but Ning makes so so much sense as Xiu's OTP and nobody else will do. Not only because, as I mentioned earlier, I think Xiu is the most fucked up of the bros and so he can only open up to someone who not only chases him so he doesn't have to be emotionally forward but also Ning is the one he allows in because she's from his childhood before things get messed up.

But also, he loves her BECAUSE she is childish and sheltered and easy to read, as well as singlemindedly devoted. He wants her that way and will fight to keep her that way - she's like the symbol of his lost childhood, of all the good things. He will never reveal his darkest, most damaged self to her (I honestly don't think he's capable - he's an emotional cripple through and through; even when later the ruler gives a tacit approval to the relationship, he still doesn't open up in terms of his deepest self - the only time we see him do it is later in this scene when she's literally unconscious and the way he freaks when he thinks she's actually awake) BECAUSE he needs her to be the one untainted thing in his life.

She doesn’t talk about it a lot but every so often she says she missed out on time with her dad when she was younger. One day Bradley and them come home and complain about the training. They maybe mention they can’t wait for the mission and it triggers their housewife’s memories. She stops stirring the soup and she rubs upstairs ignoring their calls. She flinched when Jake breaks down the door and she finally confesses her dad used to say the same thing. And she was worried they were bored of her and that’s not it all! Blurb?

when jake finally breaks into your shared bedroom door and hears your little sniffles, he’s heart broken. “my love, what is it?” he comes round the side of the bed and you feel the weight in the mattress shift as he holds onto your shoulders to turn you towards him. you look up at him with watery eyes and he pulls you into his chest. he gently rocks you as you let out your sobs, waiting patiently for you to speak. even if it came two hours later, he would wait for you to speak.

bradley comes in to the see the scene unfolding and he kneels down to gently squeeze your knee. you finally come around and explain why, why you got so upset. “and sometimes, it just reminds me and makes me think you’re bored of me,” you blubber out in between hiccups. both bradley and jake have apologetic looks on their faces. they feel awful.

“no, no bunny. please don’t think that. we’re never bored of you, we love you so, so much. sometimes days at work can get overwhelming and we want a change of scenery, but that doesn’t mean we don’t pray and beg that you could come with us too.” bradley speaks as he looks up at you.

jake squeezes your shoulders in agreement. “we can’t do any of this without you, bunny.” the blonde reminds you in sequence.

hiii i need help finding this one super specific fic which i recall is pretty popular but i just can't seem to find it so i was hoping you (or someone) could help me. the details are hazy but essentially sherlock has some sort of injury where he needs to wear a head brace that literally gets screwed into his head so his movement is super limited and so john needs to take care of him. i think the screws even get infected at some point. john also sees a therapist in this story i think?? there's also this specific scene where john hears a noise while driving and has a mini panic attack so he stops and gets outta the car? johnlock get closer bc of sherlock's brace situation and eventually sherlock gets the brace removed. omfg this is a mess but im hoping something here sounds familiar enough to you bc i love that fic but cant find it 😭

Bride of Re-Animator! And it kicked ass, I was like this :D the entire time. God I love Herbert West and his gay crush on the blandest man in the world and his utter refusal to stop making things worse by reanimating everything he possibly can. The plot made no sense at all. It opens in Peru for some reason, there's a finger eyeball creature scuttling around in one scene, that creep's head returned with bat wings this time and did absolutely nothing, and Dan is such a wishy washy uncommitted loser that it made the titular bride tear herself apart. 10/10 no notes.

10. What was the last movie you watched in theaters? What did you think of it?

Ooooooof it's been a long time since I actually saw something in theatres.

I think Spiderman Far From Home? I was unimpressed.

I just woke up from my morning sleeps and I had two Monkee dreams!

The first dream was Mike was running from the cops. I don’t know why he was running from the cops but it was like a high speed chase in a car that I was watching on the news and everything.

Then it like morphed and changed suddenly Peber was with me and he was wearing the clown makeup from the deleted scene of Head and he was singing a story about a clown that everyone mocked and tormented but then one day the clown died and those same people were weeping and talking about how much they had loved the clown.

Then my puppy stamped on my stomach with her front paws and I woke up.

Patrivan Drives Me Nuts, And Here's Why: Part 5

S5E4: The Body [1,2,3,4]

->Because Ivan Is Really Pissing Me Off (but not as much as Ari)

Hm, how to even begin?

Look, this episode was as bad as episode 3 as far as patrivan is concerned, but I didn't hate it as much... I would say. And that's only because I think Cruz evened out this whole emotional mess, and Patrick isn't as inferior to Ivan anymore. Like, he's finally got a bullet to fire back at the idiot. Yeah, yeah. I'm toxic like that. But what I'm saying is, right when I saw that, I knew Patrick's trauma after seeing the boy he likes and his sister having sex in broad daylight will soon be returned. By, like, two-folds.

BUT. That doesn't make it any less fucked up. I know. Because, seriously? Ivan's dad? It couldn't be, idk, an older brother or something? Granted, his dad acts like a man-child than an actual father, but still. Cruz is a very questionable third party to involve.

But again, enough to satisfy my thirst for revenge. Lol.

Anyway. Let's break this post into 3 parts based on the sequence of events in the episode concerning our lovely (and suffering) otp. First would be Ari and Ivan's boat scenes 😒 (I'm still fuming), next is Patrick's whole emotional train wreck 🥺, and lastly, the aftermath of that wreck. Which, for Patrick, typically translates to 'another bad decision', a.k.a. Cruz. 🤷‍♀️

1. Ari and Ivan.

(yeah, I'm not... I'm not gonna add gifs of them. Lol)

So, Ari and Ivan's boat ride and eventual boat sex.... *sighs* I really don't want to talk about it because it just makes me angry, so I'll get to the point.

Wtf was that? Ari can't get her boyfriend to spend time with her, because he's working to have money, so she drinks, summons "Ira" as Patrick calls her evil alter ego, and cheats on her boyfriend with the guy she knows her brother likes? And Ivan lets it happen, but I don't expect much from him, so I'm not even disappointed (but I am, truly, lol).

That's all I have for them. *leaves*

2. Patrick.

Now, this episode wasn't very kind to him, was it? Poor baby.

He doesn't appear until around minute 19 and already you can tell that he's not doing great. First of all, he's late. He's supposed to be around during his dad's welcome speech, but even Ari has no idea where he could be. And when he does arrive, he's clearly on something. He's interrupting his dad, being rude to people, and breaking expensive sculptures - just being a total menace. And to make sense of it, remember that we're picking up from episode 3's rejection from Ivan.

Obviously, he got very upset about it that he went out and drank, got high, and probably fooled around with strangers if the huge-ass hickey on his neck is anything to go by. And sometimes it annoys me how he could be so fixated on one person, you know? Because he could get anyone, but he spends most of his time and invests his emotions choosing people who wouldn't choose him back. That's just really... ANYWAY-

So he gets into a verbal fight with his dad that ends up with him getting slapped (and oh my... that confrontation reveals a lot about his insecurities, doesn't it?). Then he walks out, throws a tantrum outside (which, Patrick, baby, seriously? 😒), and as if he hasn't had enough stabs into his chest, he gets stabbed in the back, too. He catches his sister Ari and Ivan having sex - out in the open jfc - and, ooooooof, the look in his eyes 🥺🥺🥺. Just- *gestures*

This is the exact look that makes Cruz's entrance in the picture satisfying to me (despite the, well, obvious age issues). Because trust Patrick to make things messier for everyone. He can't be the only one that suffers lol. Though, tbf, I don't think he intends to hurt Ivan. Ivan doesn't like him like that, as Ivan keeps on insisting, right?

3. Cruz.

But Patrick can't even take all the credit for this chaos, can he? Because to begin, it's not Patrick who showed intent first. Patrick's out there pouring his heart out to Ivan's dad because he just really needs someone to talk to, and Cruz flirts with him. Unintentionally, maybe, at first, but flirts with him nonetheless. So, what's Patrick supposed to do, really?

He just got bitch-slapped by his dad, saw his sister getting it on with the boy who spacezoned him, then there's Cruz who comforts him, tells him that it's impossible that no one notices and wants Patrick for who he is (because he clearly does), and Patrick's supposed to - what? Walk away? From the one person who seems to appreciate him at his very fragile moment? Who's showing interest in him when the persons he wants it from can't give it to him?

So, he goes for it. And, no, it's not a smart decision, but it's the decision that gave him peace temporarily - took his mind off things for a short while. And he really needs to chill after all that, tbh. And Cruz is neither in a committed relationship, nor too afraid to kiss him. So? Cruz just so happens to be Ivan's dad, just like Ari just so happens to be Patrick's sister. It's really.... not that crazy. (*snorts* Lmfao XD)

Anyway, that's all for episode 4. And, y'aaaaall. I can't wait to discuss episodes 5 and 6 because they're, by far, my favorite patrivan episodes this season. Like *screams incoherently*

Like, how my thoughts about Ivan gets proven in episode 5, and how Cruz is such a little shit dad, and how I think Patrick is too villainized for going through with *it* (ya know, the pool scene), or accused of self-destruction when he literally just accepted someone's attention to soothe his broken heart. You know, it's for him. It's not about someone else.

Don't get me wrong, Patrick has self-destructive tendencies (exhibit A: the entirety of season 4), but I don't believe that particular scene is one of those instances. The latter one, maybe, yes. (Okay, to be clear, I mean when Patrick runs away from home after that video of Ivan in Ibiza and seeks out Cruz for comfort? I think that's in episode 7... Yeah, that's the one. That's self-destruction right there.) But this one (as in: episode 6, the pool scene)? No, that's just what would have happened in episode 5 had Ivan been too chicken-shit to finally make a move.

Anyway, I'm gonna talk more about that in the next ones. Ciao!
