d...did that math person go on some rant about "probability and odds are different" proceed to explain the odds thing AS PROBABILITY INSTEAD, insist super high odds are actually really likely (contrary to every instance of odds... ever, really?) and then say that because narratively they survived they always had a 99% chance of survival
a) yes
b) yes hence why they should DEFINITELY go and bet all their money on something that's like 500:1. they will absolutely get their money back. i promise. it's at least a 90% chance
c) famously nobody has survived overwhelmingly high odds, certainly not in fiction narratively for the sake of a good story

Solskjaer’s hairdryer and Pogba’s unhappiness: The cracks appearing at Manchester United
When Sir Alex Ferguson replaced Ron Atkinson at Manchester United his top priority was to change club culture, even if it meant major stars Gordon Strachan, Norman Whiteside and Paul McGrath sell without having substitutions.
Roll three decades ahead and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also seeks long-term profit at the expense of significant short-term pain.
Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez are among the dropouts, despite United failing in quality and the early leap of Ole behind the wheel has disappeared; only two of the nine points against Wolves Crystal Palace and Southampton .
Sportsmail advises United & # 39; s policy of ripping the work of Jose Mourinho and how this affects players and fans in England's biggest club.
It is not going to plan in Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has work to do
SPIRIT IN THE CAMP
It is not surprising that it is low after a run that United has not won since February and defeated by Cardiff and Crystal Palace in their last three games in Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been able to remove some of the unfortunate faces, including Lukaku and Sanchez, but the gamble to force Paul Pogba to stay has not yet been paid off with the Frenchman looking for a lost figure in Southampton. weekend.
The controversial punishment between Marcus Rashford and Pogba has not done either. Not only did both men miss their last spades, Pogba looked a bit frustrated when Rashford lost two free spades from prime locations against Crsytal Palace before giving the World Cup winner a less favorable position
United player trudged out of the field after a recent miserable home defeat against Crystal Palace
The rush to youth is for many have been too fast. It was clear that Lukaku and Sanchez would not get play time and Nemanja Matic was sidelined for Scott McTominay despite the team's pre-season record.
David from Gea has not signed a new contract, Pogba is unlikely to entertain one and it will take a while for the next generation; Harry Maguire, Aaron wan-Bissaka, Rashford, Dan James to be the leaders the club needs.
It is all a sharp contrast last December when Solskjaer came in, released the Mourinho buoys and immediately won eight on the spider
The Rashford case is particularly interesting. Solskjaer and United have great faith in the local academic child and said he will be the team's most important center striker this season at the age of 21. For all his potential, Rashford has not yet come to a consistent goal scorer, and has not netted or played particularly well in his last three games.
It was no secret that Paul Pogba was desperate to seal Real Madrid's exit in the summer
TACTICS
Solkjaer's plan looks pretty clear, 4-3-3 with two midfield sitters and devastating pace on the flanks in Dan James, Anthony Martial and Rashford to hit teams on the kitchen counter. The team is filled with young, athletic players. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a right back who can defend one on one; Harry Maguire a center defender who can bring the ball outside.
United probably dared to win both away in this way, but does not have the edge in the penalty area where the Rashford goal record is lower than Lukaku.
Solskjaer has already used the blistering pace of the new boy Daniel
What they also miss in the Solskjaer system is a creative No10 that can go through to unlock fully packed defenses; to Christian Eriksen or even James Maddison. Juan Mata is the closest to the club, but he has no fixed place.
Pogba could be that player, but so far Solskjaer has used him by McTominay deep where he does not move the ball sufficiently, or to the left of a 4-3-3.
It has not helped that the shape of Pogba is currently not good and that the death of McTominay is not sharp enough if United dominates possession. The home defeat against Crystal Palace showed Roy Hodgson as a template for achieving results at Old Trafford.
The injury to the left back Luke Shaw has denied United yet another attack opening when Wan-Bissaka & # 39; s main force on the other side defends flank. However, the tactical options of Solskjaer are limited by a lack of depth compared to the rest of the Big Six.
Injury to the left back Luke Shaw has so far United another attacking outlet refused
In addition to Sanchez and Lukaku, Ander Herrera, Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling also left. The vacuum is being filled by teenagers such as Mason Greenwood. He could develop into a top player, but here and now it is unfair to expect him to be a regular game changer. American staff makes it unlikely that Solskjaer will change tact.
James has made a good impression and his speed will be used this season. He showed Southampton that he is probably more dangerous on the left. It leaves Solskjaer a matter of how to re-fit Martial when he returns from an injury. The Frenchman could play in the middle, but that would mean that Rashford had to be moved to the right.
SOLKSJAER & # 39; S MOOD
He may no longer be the baby face murder, but the 46-year-old still looked much younger than his age when he took over at United and was charmed of players, fans and media. The worry lines now appear.
He shed his nice image after the disappointing draw in Southampton by his players furiously & # 39; a joke & # 39; and & # 39; embarrassing & # 39; In his own match days, Roy Keane's hair dryer was probably Sir Alex Ferguson, but the United boss nowadays thinks it's up to him to lay down the law, and many United fans will be happy to hear that he's frank .
The worry lines start appearing for Solskjaer as the pressure rises at Old Trafford
Such a tactic has a limited shelf life. After being deposited in the players, Solskjaer now needs a response. The next game, in Leicester City after the international break, is already looking like a biggie with The Foxes as real contenders to break into the so-called Big Six.
FINISH
This is why Lukaku, a real striker with 20 goals per season, going to Inter Milan was a risk. United must complete his chances to win matches and Solskjaer is appalled that his team is eighth in the table, despite setting more than seven good chances to match (7.4) – the third highest score in the division behind Manchester City and West Ham.
If you only kept a zero sheet in 19, the importance of taking advantage of those opportunities will only increase.
Marcus Rashford still has to prove that he can be a reliable goal scorer for the Red Devils
United let Romelu Lukaku leave for Inter Milan despite a shortage of firepower [194590014]
[1 9459002] & # 39; Mason Greenwood is a more natural finisher than she (Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford) & # 39 ;, says Solskjaer, a brilliant comic Ker himself, this season. His words can be considered a huge boost for the 17-year-old Greenwood, or a bit of a concern for the other two.
Rashford & # 39; s peanalty miss against Crystal Palace ended his 100 percent record from the spot but it was probably his failure to convert a one-to-one chance earlier in the game that was a little more worrying.
Maybe Greenwood gets the chance to start too quickly. United cannot afford to create seven chances to match and not win.
Not many 17-year-olds can score goals in the top flight, but special talents, such as Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer, have proven that it is possible.
Extra pressure has been exerted this season on the Mason Greenwood striker
ATTITUDE
If you are not winning, attitude is the first topic to be discussed in phone programs and on social media. Paul Pogba has been accused of playing with too much strut in the past, but after being held at St Mary & # 39; s, Harry Maguire believes that United players should show more arrogance rather than less.
& # 39; We are Man United – we want to control games, & # 39; he said, recalling & # 39; King & # 39; Eric Cantona.
dictate United has no player in the mold by Kevin By Bruyne who can move and dictate the ball
The difficulty is that United does not have Paul Scholes or Cantona who can move the ball with such precision, other teams are not kicked. Manchester City has David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne, their personalities are not arrogant, but they play with that style as footballers because of their quality.
Solskjaer goes a different way – Rashford and James don't go outfootball you, but they will hurt you if they can break past the back line and be found with a good pass. Maybe Maguire should go to midfield himself!

Premier League 2018/19 Tactical Analysis: Wolves vs Newcastle
bestfreebettingtips.com @bestfreebettingtips
Another stoppage-time goal for Wolves meant that they earned a late point against Newcastle on Monday evening. This was the fifth time this season that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have scored after the 90 minute mark this season, a league high.
On previous occasions, some goals have mattered, others not so much. Most recently, the winner in the 4-3 game against Leicester obviously mattered. The second against Bournemouth in December was less crucial, although it did kill the game completely.
Of the other two, one also came against Newcastle earlier in the campaign as Matt Doherty got the winner at St James’ Park. Last but by no means least was Adama Traore’s goal against West Ham at the London Stadium which gave the Black Country side all three points.
As we touched on in the preview, Wolves have struggled against Premier League sides in the lower echelons of the table. With time running out on Monday, it looked set to be much of the same. In this tactical analysis, we are going to compare Wolves’ performance against Newcastle to that when they faced Huddersfield and Crystal Palace. On paper, Wolves should have picked up nine points from those three games. In reality, they only picked up one.
Team news
Credit: Wyscout.
There were no surprises from either Nuno or Rafa Benitez when it came to personnel. Positionally, the only real shock from the Newcastle manager was the Isaac Hayden was deployed slightly further forward than usual which meant that at times, Sean Longstaff acted as a single pivot in front of the back three.
Despite the similarity in formation, the average positions of the home and away side couldn’t be starker as you can see below.
Credit: both images are from Wyscout.
Jonny Castro Otto (Wolves’ #19) and Doherty (#2) were much further forward than Matt Ritchie (#11) and DeAndre Yedlin (#22) on the away side.
Whereas as Ruben Neves & Joao Moutinho (#8 & #28) sat in the centre circle, Longstaff (#36) did that job on his own for the Toon Army as Hayden (#14) and Ayoze Perez (#17) pushed further forward to almost create a front three with Salomon Rondon (#9).
Furthermore, Wolves completed almost 200 more passes than Newcastle. However, it was the away side who took the lead.
Willy Boly fixes his error… eventually
For all of the plaudits that Boly got for scoring the late equaliser, there is no question that he was at fault for Hayden’s goal. Before I go into detail with it all, you need to have a look at the below image taken just before Fabian Schar slides the ball through.
Boly’s flat-footedness gifts Hayden half a yard.
Moutinho can’t get to the ball quickly enough. All the same, it shouldn’t be a situation that raises too many issues as Boly is relatively close to the eventual goalscorer. Even though Boly is practically within touching distance, his body shape lets him down as instead of being side on and ready to go, he’s facing the ball which means he needs to turn to chase Hayden.
As the late, great Brian Clough once said: “It only takes a second to score a goal.” That’s precisely what happened. Coady’s path follows the white line as he presumes Boly has got Hayden’s run covered, but he doesn’t. If he had followed the red one, he would’ve stopped Hayden dead in his tracks. Fine margins, indeed.
Considering all of the above – Boly’s body shape, Coady thinking he has it covered etc – none of that should’ve really mattered. Rui Patricio, in the Wolves goal, has to be doing better. He thinks that Hayden’s going to shoot across him, but the Newcastle man goes for the near post and Rui effectively ends up pushing it into his own net.
Boly’s redemption
Deep in stoppage time, Boly rose highest to head home Adama Traore’s cross. Martin Dubravka completely misjudged the flight of the ball as Boly headed it into the empty net. In some quarters, there were questions of a foul on the Newcastle keeper, but it was just a case of Dubravka getting it wrong, Boly getting it right and the spoils being shared. Nuno’s side should’ve put the game to bed long before that moment, before Hayden even put Newcastle into the lead.
Wolves’ third biggest ‘win’ of the season
Wolves’ domination in the game is emphasised by the xG scoreline: Wolves 2.41-0.44 Newcastle. Or, an xGD (expected goal difference) of 1.87 in Wolves’ favour. The only two xG results which eclipse that are when Wolves hosted Sean Dyche’s Burnley and Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham respectively.
From the Burnley match, Wolves ended with an xGD of 3.18 (the final score was only 1-0 in Wolves’ favour). Against the Hammers, the xGD was only marginally better than that of the Newcastle game at 1.89. The timing chart from the Newcastle game can be seen below.
Credit: understat.com
As is evidenced above, Wolves were always ahead of Newcastle on the xG front, apart from the first 16 minutes or so. To illustrate this even better, let’s take a look at the respective shot maps.
Credit: understat.com
Wolves had 22 shots compared to Newcastle’s nine, and double the number on target, but a combination of wastefulness and Dubravka playing well up until Boly’s equaliser kept Wolves at bay. How does this compare to the aforementioned games when Wolves faced Crystal Palace and Huddersfield at Molineux?
Steps in the right direction
When Crystal Palace visited the Black Country on 2 January, they came away with a 2-0 win courtesy of two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. It was thoroughly deserved as the xG scoreline from that day was 0.66-1.88. No complaints can be had from that game.
When David Wagner brought his Huddersfield side to the Midlands, few people gave the Terriers a chance of getting a positive result. Just like Crystal Palace, they won 2-0. The xG scoreline? 0.70-0.63. While the final score might be unfair when you take xG into account, there’s one common denominator from the Palace and Huddersfield game that can’t be ignored. Wolves’ xG from both of those games is under 0.75.
So, with the 3-5-2 formation in place for the first time against a supposedly lesser team, Wolves created more than three times the number of chances. If that’s not progression, I’m not sure what is.
Conclusion
Before the game, Benitez’ side would’ve been much happier with the final score. After the game, Nuno would’ve no doubt been the cheerier of the two coaches. Wolves remain seventh, while Newcastle leapfrog Cardiff to 16th.
Until the next time.

Dimitar Berbatov: Soaring Spurs can score derby spoils

Dimitar Berbatov: Soaring Spurs can score derby spoils Please share.
Dimitar Berbatov reflects on a big week for two former clubs – Spurs and United – after contrasting Champions League wins, and looks ahead to their weekend fixtures
Spurs show stunning character but toughest test lies aheadTottenham have shown incredible character to give themselves a chance of making the knockout stages of the Champions League but the hardest game in Group B is yet to come and while the task – matching or bettering Inter’s result against PSV – isn’t impossible, they have to do it against one of the best teams in club football.Barca have nothing to play for, which is on Spurs’ side, but it’s still going to be so difficult for them. A great club like Barca will want to win every match and they aren’t going to turn up and play at anything less than 100%.Surprises do happen in football though and it’s not as if Tottenham do not have a chance. Obviously, Barca have many great players but the key man is Lionel Messi and Tottenham would be delighted to see him rested for the final game in Group B. The problem is that Messi will definitely want to play. And if he plays then Spurs have problems. Big players always want to play, Messi is chasing records all over the place and he will be desperate to be out on the pitch rather than rested. If that happens Spurs have a problem. If he is rested then it gives Spurs a greater chance. So don’t write Tottenham off. They looked dead in the group after losing the opening two games, but while they still had a chance of qualifying they kept fighting and now they go into the final game with their destiny in their hands. It will be an unbelievable finish for them if they can go to Barcelona and get the result they need. The good news is that, thanks to Wednesday night’s win, they have the comfort of Europa League football if they don’t make the last 16 of the Champions League. While that’s not quite a win-win at least they have a chance of winning that competition. I’ve said it before but Spurs need to lift some silverware this year.Red-hot Spurs to seal derby winBut before that, the north London derby!I’m not dismissing Arsenal at all, but Spurs have a great team right now and they have anything to worry about ahead of the fixture. They come into the game in very hot form, having inflicted the first defeat on Chelsea this season and then putting in a very professional performance to beat Inter Milan. All those results just build the confidence and Spurs are in a good position. Of course, as all football fans know, form can go out of the window in derby games. There’s another dimension at work when local teams clash and this is a big one. I have been part of this game, I’ve scored in it and I know how much it means to the fans. On the pitch it really does come down to who wants it more. The first memory that comes to mind when I think of the fixture is the 5-1 defeat of Arsenal in the League Cup. I remember how happy everybody was in the dressing room afterwards, the fans loving it. Sometimes it’s good to win like that, you show them – ‘take that, we are better than you!’This one looks like being a great game. Arsenal are playing good football at the moment and I have to confess I like to watch the Gunners play, they produce attractive football and score good goals. They have great players, loads of speed, great technical ability – it’s all there. Upfront, I like Aubameyang, he has great qualities, and is a genuine rival to Mo Salah and Harry Kane for the Golden Boot. It’s going to be a dangerous game for both defences. I hope to see goals and I’m sure both teams will score, but I think Spurs will edge it with a 2-1 win.And if that happens I will love it, I’ll be jumping around! Sissoko rewards Poch’s faithI am very happy for Moussa Sissoko right now and he was once again a key player for Spurs, making the run that lead to Christian Eriksen’s winner against Inter and was probably the man of the match against Chelsea before that.I do wonder how he feels after being criticised so heavily for two years before this current golden spell, however. People are quick to criticise these days, it’s so easy to do, but I guarantee you that as long as he was in the team he was giving everything he could. I know it’s frustrating for fans when players are not performing well, but players notice the criticism, believe me. When you make a mistake on the pitch – or worse still have a long period of poor form – and the fans are on your back it’s the worst feeling. So, credit has to go to Mauricio Pochettino who has kept with him for these last few years. He knew how good the player is and has finally got him to that level. That faith has been rewarded. Sissoko isn’t a Spurs great yet, but a genuine club legend retired from the game this week, and it’s one I enjoyed playing some fantastic football with. Take a bow, Robbie Keane! It was always a pleasure to play with Robbie. It was a great partnership and I knew that we were going to do something – and in most games that happened, scored goals, made defenders look stupid. We complemented each other. We didn’t really need to train with each other, we just understood how each other played. Good combinations like this are rare to come by and it was fun to play with Robbie. He was so energetic. Robbie knew straightway that when I had the ball he should start running because he knew that I would find him. Some of the goals we scored were pure class. I still watch some of them.I texted him to say congratulations and I wish him all the best with Republic of Ireland set-up. He will pass on plenty of valuable knowledge to the up-and-coming players over there.Jose’s explosions show the stress Talking of criticism, Jose Mourinho has again been taking flak for his touchline behaviour during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat of Young Boys on Tuesday night. For those who didn’t see it, Mourinho drew attention for turning to the crowd after a Marcus Rashford miss and shaking his head and then destroying a tray of water bottles when Marouane Fellaini scored the late winner. Gary Lineker is not impressed by Jose Mourinhohttps://t.co/vZEkCfskLf? PA Dugout (@PAdugout) November 28, 2018 For me, those reactions are coming from the tension and stress around the team, and the criticism Mourinho is taking right now. Of course that is going to affect the manager. It can’t be easy to get criticised from all sides and from time to time that pressure must show. And from a player’s point of view it’s not good. You are going to see it either during or after the game, or someone’s going to tell you about it or ask about it, and you are not going to feel good. But maybe Marcus and Jose are talking about it now, and I’m sure he understands that he should have put that chance away. He’ll know why Jose reacted like he did. Every coach has their own philosophy for getting the best out of players and sometimes these can seem strange to the public. Mourinho is a winner, we know this, and maybe this is way of motivating. People are always looking for controversy but I don’t like to pay too much attention to stuff like this. For me, this is one for the team to deal with. When Jose destroyed the water tray that was a massive release of the stress that has built up. I understand it because I was jumping in my home. The kids were asleep and the missus came in screaming ‘Are you crazy?!’ but I had to let it out. I can understand it, it shows the fire! And better he releases that stress on the water bottles then someone’s face!As for the game, it wasn’t a great performance and it took another late show from Marouane Fellaini to save United. I used to play against Fellaini and he was a tricky opponent let me tell you. He is strong and tall but he has great balance, can control with his chest and is a great header of the ball. It was a good goal he scored against Young Boys and I have no criticisms of United playing long ball football late on – Liverpool were doing it against PSG last night – and it’s good for the team that they have that option.United lose Lindelof and they need a new defenderThe January Transfer Window is approaching and I’d like to see Jose bring a ball-playing centre-half to Old Trafford.United lost Victor Lindelof for some time after suffering an injury against Crystal Palace and that will be a loss as Jose had shown plenty of faith in him this season. The Swedish defender had played in every Premier League game but one so far this campaign. For me, United need to sign someone with calmness on the ball, who can feed the midfield and carry the ball out. In modern football you need to play the ball out from the back and United have been missing that a bit. Fulham will come back down to earth with a bumpI predicted a debut win for Claudio Ranieri as Fulham coach and they did it, but it’s a tougher assignment this time round with Chelsea looking to get back to winning ways.Ranieri may adopt a tactical, defensive approach to this one and as long as Fulham concentrate and don’t make silly mistakes perhaps they will get something from the game, but being a realist they will probably get beaten.Chelsea lost their last game and will be desperate to pick up three points here. The league table tells us they should do that.

Supporting Man Utd is like having a tortoise as a pet - Pilkington v Lawro at predictions
Supporting Manchester United at the moment is “like having a tortoise as a pet,” according to comedian, TV presenter and Red Devils fan Karl Pilkington.
Pilkington, who takes on BBC Sport’s football expert Mark Lawrenson in predicting this week’s Premier League fixtures, was a boyhood Manchester City fan but switched sides to United in the 1990s.
“A bit of me now wishes I could change again, because City are good, aren’t they?” Pilkington explained.
“But you can’t, can you? I realise that now as I get older – that it is about being loyal, isn’t it?
Media playback is not supported on this device
“Still, I feel like supporting United is like having a tortoise as a pet. I had a tortoise, and they are not entertaining to watch. You don’t watch them, but you know you have got a bit of responsibility to show some interest.
“That is what I do with United. I keep an eye on them.
“I don’t watch them every game because, at the minute, that is a waste of 90 minutes. I just look at the result and if they win it is a bonus, I have no expectations any more.”

LAWRO’S PREDICTIONS
All kick-offs 15:00 BST unless stated.
SATURDAY
<!–
West Ham v Man Utd (12:30 BST)
The situation at Manchester United is turning into a soap opera.
Paul Pogba’s relationship with Jose Mourinho is not just in doubt, it is developing in front of our eyes[1] – which is an absolutely ridiculous situation when you think of the size of that club.
It would appear that one of the two has got to give, and it is probably easier to sell a player than it is to get rid of a manager.
What complicates matters is that Pogba could and should be United’s best player, and I would love to know the part that Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola has played in all of this.
<!–
It would appear he has sniffed the possibility of a better deal at Barcelona and is thinking “let’s get him out of Manchester United” which is the kind of scenario that I actually hate about football now.
Whoever is behind it all, it looks like Pogba no longer wants to play for United and in the end the player will always get his way.
It is a case of what does Mourinho do with him between now and 1 January?
I would suggest that he tells him to stay and play and give 100% until the transfer window opens and if he does that, he can leave.
It is a difficult situation for Mourinho and some of his behaviour has not helped him – at the moment it reminds me a lot of his acrimonious third year at Real, which obviously did not end well for him. [2]
But the situation is still salvageable. I hate the term that a manager has “lost the dressing room” because generally they don’t lose the entire squad, they only lose the players who are not playing.
They just become a nuisance, because they sense a manager could be on his way out and, because a change could benefit them, they are the ones who are whispering to the press.
<!–
It is those disaffected players that are a problem, and there are plenty of them at United that definitely do not fall into that category, who will still be playing for Mourinho.
That is why I think they will go to West Ham and win.
The Hammers have had a good week, with their point against Chelsea and then thumping Macclesfield 8-0.
But if I was in that United dressing room after everything that has gone on this week, I would be thinking now “let’s just go and win this game and show people what we are about”.
West Ham will come at them too which, with the way United like to play, is perfect for them.
Lawro’s prediction: 0-2
Karl’s prediction: (sighs) It is going to be another draw isn’t it? 1-1
Karl on Jose Mourinho and his playing style: I am sure he has got a plan – he has got to have a plan, he has won a lot of stuff.
He got annoyed, didn’t he, about not getting respect, and he does deserve respect – but I just want to watch a good game.
That is all I want, even if we lose – just an entertaining game. At the moment it is just not entertaining but is that how he operates? Is that important to him, or does he just want the three points?
<!–
Arsenal v Watford
Arsenal have now won six games in a row in all competitions – OK, they have not beaten any big-hitters but you can only beat what is put in front of you, and they are doing that which is the most important thing.
I am sure new Arsenal boss Unai Emery will be asked about the comments by Hornets’ striker Troy Deeney last season that the Gunners’ lacked the “cojones” for a fight after his side had beaten them.[3]
Media playback is not supported on this device
I don’t actually think much has changed about Arsenal under Emery – they are a good side, but they were a good side under Arsene Wenger, just not one of the best three teams in the country.
As well as their good results, I like the look of Lucas Torreira in midfield, so there is lots to be encouraged about.
I think they will beat Watford and make it seven in a row, but it will be interesting when they come up against the big teams – like Liverpool on 3 November for example.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Karl’s prediction: Watford are doing all right aren’t they. I am going to play it safe and go for another 1-1.
<!–
Everton v Fulham
As we saw again with the chances they missed against Arsenal,[4] Everton are still missing a finisher.
That defeat at the Emirates Stadium means the Toffees have won only one of their first six league games, but they have actually not been playing that badly and I think they will put that right here.
<!–
Fulham are a funny side – they were poor defensively in the first half of their draw against Watford,[5] but they came back well and almost nicked the win when Aleksandar Mitrovic headed against the bar.
I just wonder if the Cottagers have a bit of a frailty when teams go at them – they try to play good football and I would applaud for them that, but they are also a little bit open.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Karl’s prediction: 1-0
<!–
Huddersfield v Tottenham
Huddersfield are yet to win in the league this season and are bottom of the table after their defeat by Leicester,[6] and it is hard to see things improving for them this weekend.
<!–
Spurs were very impressive when they won here last season,[7] and I think we will see the same outcome this time.
It is very difficult to talk about Huddersfield without being critical because, although they are organised and competitive, they don’t really look like scoring goals.
There is nothing wrong with the Terriers’ application, it just comes down to a lack of quality.
Lawro’s prediction: 0-2
Karl’s prediction: Tottenham will win that won’t they? 1-3

Man City v Brighton
Brighton were a bit unlucky to lose to Tottenham last weekend[8] – I have talked before about how good they are at fighting back in games but it is not a positive that they seem to have to go behind before you see a reaction.
It is Manchester City they are playing this week, though, so I think we can forgive them if they do ship a goal or two.
I was with Seagulls boss Chris Hughton, an old Republic of Ireland team-mate of mine, in Dublin on Monday.
He is very pragmatic and his approach is to treat every single Premier League game like it’s a cup final because every point they get could end up being the one that keeps them up.
Chris told me he does not let his players get too excited when they win, or too down when they lose – and I cannot see him or his team dwelling too much on this result if they do get beaten.
Lawro’s prediction: 3-0
Karl’s prediction: No doubt about it, another City win. It is just a case of how many numbers and how high shall we go? 4-1
<!–
Newcastle v Leicester
Newcastle got a draw at Crystal Palace[9] last weekend, but I will never know how Mamadou Sakho missed an easy chance to win it for the Eagles late on.
Rafa Benitez’s side need to find a way to start winning games, though, and I cannot see that happening on Saturday.
With the pace that Leicester have got in their attack, I can see them going to St James’ Park and winning.
There is a lot of goodwill towards Benitez from the Newcastle fans, but he has got start getting some points.
At the moment, there is still an awful lot of noise coming from supporters about Mike Ashley and how he needs to spend more money on players, but they should park that until the transfer window opens in January.
Lawro’s prediction: 0-2
Karl’s prediction: 0-2
<!–
Wolves v Southampton
I thought Wolves’ performance last time out in their draw with Manchester United[10] was excellent.
They carried a real threat from the first minute and they just looked like a team that is very much at home in the Premier League.
Media playback is not supported on this device
Before this week, I had only predicted one win for Wolves this season in their first six matches, but I must admit I had not really watched that much of them before that game at Old Trafford, which is why I thought they would struggle.
Mea culpa, because actually they look a really well-balanced side and I would not be surprised if one or two of the bigger teams are already looking at some of their players and thinking “crikey, they are making this look easy”.
At the same time as Wolves were looking so impressive against United, Southampton were having a very different afternoon at Anfield – and, after conceding three first-half goals, their game against Liverpool[11] was done and dusted by half-time.
Media playback is not supported on this device
I think Saints will have another difficult day at Molineux. I like the way Wolves play through their midfield and Nuno Espirito Santo has got a good mix of skill and industry in his team.
By now, they themselves will know they belong in the top flight.
Of course every promoted side will say before the season starts that they fancy themselves, but you don’t know for sure until you start – and I cannot remember another team to come out of the Championship and look so comfortable, so early.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Karl’s prediction: 1-0

Chelsea v Liverpool (17:30 BST)
I don’t think Chelsea’s win at Anfield in the Carabao Cup[12] will have any bearing on this game – there will not be too many players from either side who started on Wednesday night that will also start on Saturday evening.
<!–
Maurizio Sarri has done a great job after taking charge of Chelsea over the summer but, even with home advantage, he will know the threat that Liverpool carry.
I am going to go for a draw here, and that would be a good result for both teams.
Lawro’s prediction: 1-1
Karl’s prediction: This is a good one. It is annoying to say it but I reckon Liverpool will do it. 1-2
SUNDAY
<!–
Cardiff v Burnley (16:00 BST)
Burnley picked up their first Premier League win[13] last weekend, although Bournemouth had the better of the early play.
I have been reading what Clarets boss Sean Dyche said about their preparations for that game, after his side had made such a poor start to the season, and he and his players had sat down in the week and had a big chat about everything.
I can imagine Dyche doing that, and it worked.
Cardiff, in contrast, were on the wrong end of a drubbing by Manchester City[14] and they are still without a win.
Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock has got so much experience that I bet he has barely mentioned that defeat since. They will definitely be competitive in this game, although Burnley will cope with the physical side of their game.
Lawro’s prediction: 1-1
Karl’s prediction: Burnley got a good result against Bournemouth last week, so I’m going with them again. 1-3
MONDAY
<!–
Bournemouth v Crystal Palace (20:00 BST)
It will be interesting to see how Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe reacts to his side’s defeat by Burnley,[15] and whether he changes anything or just puts it down to a bad day after their strong start to the season.
Crystal Palace picked up a decent win at The Hawthorns against West Brom in the Carabao Cup[16] on Tuesday but this is a much harder task for them.
Whenever they are at home, Bournemouth always seem to create a lot of chances, regardless of the opposition, so I am backing them here.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-1
Karl’s prediction: 1-1
How did Lawro do last week?
Lawro got four correct results, including two perfect scores, from 10 matches for a total of 100 points.
He beat Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, who got five correct results, with one exact score, for a total of 80 points.[17]

Motherwell 0-1 Hearts: Steven Naismith strike puts leaders five clear
Motherwell 0-1 Hearts: Steven Naismith strike puts leaders five clear
Motherwell 0-1 Hearts: Steven Naismith strike puts leaders five clear
Steven Naismith netted his eighth Hearts goal of the season
Steven Naismith claimed his ninth goal of the season as Hearts moved five points clear at the top of the Premiership.
A poor backpass from Motherwell defender Carl McHugh allowed their visitors to intercept with Naismith converting after 28 minutes.
The hosts lost injured keeper Trevor Carson as a result with Hearts boss Craig Levein watching from the stand.
Curtis Main, Andy Rose and McHugh had chances for Well but could not convert.
Motherwell were in control until Uche Ikpeazu beat Carson to McHugh’s poor ball, allowing Naismith a follow-up to his goal for Scotland against Albania on Monday.
The result means the Tynecastle club are five points clear of champions Celtic after winning all their opening five matches.
No halting Hearts’ momentum
A legitimate question before this game may well have been whether or not the international break could have interrupted, not just the fixture list but Hearts’ momentum.
For the first half hour it looked possible.
Motherwell were first to every ball and the visitors looked a little fragmented as they concentrated on keeping a pretty rampant home side at bay. Main, Richard Tait and Peter Hartley all had chances before Hearts even had an effort, never mind one on target.
But the spirit in this Hearts squad is quite something. With Levein watching from the stand after his recent health scare, they started to creep back into the game.
And so when the goal came, it came against the run of play but not really as a surprise. McHugh was slack with a pass and when Carson clashed fairly with Ikpeazu, the ball fell kindly for Naismith who rolled the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Carson left on a stretcher and the game dynamics changed. The belief started to surge through the Hearts players again and it was Motherwell who found themselves chasing.
In the second half the Hearts belief never faltered and at no point did they look like letting their lead slip.
‘Anything is possible’ – analysis
Levein told me before this game that, in relation to the title question, anything is possible. It’s nonsensically early in the season to throw in the men in maroon as contenders, but the depth and quality of their squad may allow the Gorgie faithful to dream.
In this game all the qualities needed were on show.
With captain Christophe Berra sitting in the stand with crutches by his side, the defence stood firm at the back and looked composed throughout.
Demi Mitchell provided speed and guile on the wing, while Olly Lee and Peter Haring looked composed in the middle of the park.
Add to that, the fact Naismith cannot stop scoring beside Ikpeazu who still looks like the find of the summer after his move from Cambridge – the ingredients look more than promising.
The comparisons with Leicester have already started. A stuttering Celtic helps that chat along but if this run and form continues, you just never know.
Trevor Carson receives medical treatment before being stretchered off
‘Trevor clearly gets the ball’ – reaction
Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson said: “First and foremost an individual error actually cost us the game and then a decision that went against us with a 50-50 ball.
“Trevor clearly gets the ball. I’ve had the benefit of watching it back again, Bobby [Madden, referee] doesn’t. It’s a difficult one for him to call. Potentially our goalkeeper has a broken ankle or broken fibula.
“It’s disappointing to lose the game like that.”
Hearts manager Craig Levein said: “If Stephen is saying ‘perhaps’ then he doesn’t really believe it, does he? He’s always certain about what he says.
“For me it was a 50-50, and his players come out best in a 50-50 so he should be annoyed at his goalkeeper rather than Ikpeazu.
“I can’t see how anyone could be annoyed at Uche.”

Premier League in 2017: Who tops the table for the year, plus other stats
Chelsea and Manchester City have been the dominant teams in the Premier League over the course of the year
Chelsea won the Premier League last season, and Manchester City have started this campaign in blistering fashion, but who tops the table for 2017?
Harry Kane has had a phenomenal year but how many teams did he outscore, and did sacking a manager work?
Delve into those statistics and more in our look back at a record-breaking 2017.
Who tops the 2017 Premier League table?
Chelsea won the title at a canter last season, winning 30 of their 38 games to finish seven points clear of Tottenham.
But, with Antonio Conte’s team failing to spark this season, Manchester City have since emerged as the dominant force in England’s top flight.
City have won 19 of their 21 league games so far in 2017-18, to add to their 11 victories in the second half of last season. They top the table for 2017.
Premier League table for 2017 Position Club Matches W D L Goals for Goals against Goal difference Points 1 Man City 40 30 8 2 102 30 +72 98 2 Chelsea 40 28 5 7 82 34 +48 89 3 Tottenham 40 27 6 7 92 33 +59 87 4 Man Utd 40 21 14 5 68 26 +42 77 5 Arsenal 41 23 7 11 76 51 +25 76 6 Liverpool 40 20 14 6 80 45 +35 74 7 Everton 40 17 10 13 62 53 +9 61 8 Burnley 40 13 12 15 36 43 -7 51 9 Leicester 40 14 9 17 55 64 -9 51 10 Swansea 40 13 6 21 37 58 -21 45 11 Crystal Palace 41 12 8 21 39 62 -23 44 12 Watford 41 12 7 22 48 75 -27 43 13 Stoke 40 11 10 19 42 70 -28 43 14 Bournemouth 40 10 12 18 49 68 -19 42 15 Southampton 40 10 12 18 42 56 -14 42 16 West Ham 39 10 11 18 46 69 -23 41 17 West Brom 40 7 14 19 33 56 -23 35 18 Huddersfield 21 6 6 9 18 32 -14 24 19 Brighton 21 5 7 9 15 25 -10 22 20 Hull 19 6 3 10 21 39 -18 21 21 Newcastle 21 5 4 12 19 30 -11 19 22 Middlesbrough 19 1 7 11 10 31 -21 10 23 Sunderland 19 2 4 13 12 34 -22 10
But, despite an incredible 18-match winning run which ended on the final day of year at Crystal Palace, City did not set the record for the most Premier League wins in a calendar year.
They finished 2017 with 30, two fewer than Chelsea managed in 2005. The Londoners were the dominant force in English football at that time, winning the title in 2004-05 and again the following season.
Come back in 12 months’ time, though, because City may well be top of the pile then.
What more to say about Harry Kane?
Kane scored 56 goals in 52 games for Tottenham and England in 2017 – the most by a player in one of Europe’s top five leagues
One player pretty much guaranteed to feature in most people’s team of the year is Harry Kane.
The all-time top Premier League goalscorer in a calendar year, and highest-scoring player for club and country in Europe in 2017, it’s been quite a year for the Tottenham striker.
Kane scored 39 league goals in 2017, three more than Alan Shearer managed when he set the Premier League record in 1995. Just imagine where he would be if he could score in August.
Kane was at his most deadly in the final month of last season and the final month of the year, scoring eight goals in May and also in December.
His tally included six Premier League hat-tricks – as many as every other player in the top flight have managed between them this season.
It also takes his tally of top-flight hat-tricks to eight – more than several Premier League teams have managed during their entire stay in the competition.
Kane has also scored more hat-tricks (eight) in all competitions this year than Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani combined (seven).
And we’re not done yet. Kane outscored three Premier League teams in 2017.
So does Kane feature in your team of the year? Select your XI below.
Most points and most goals
Breaking things down month by month, it is no surprise to see Manchester City have taken more points than any other team since October.
What is perhaps surprising, however, is Chelsea never collected the most points in a single month in the second half of last season, despite winning the title.
Month Most points January Tottenham (11) February Man City (9) March Liverpool & Bournemouth (7) April Tottenham (18) May Arsenal (15) August Man Utd (9) September Man City (12) October Arsenal/Man City (9) November Man City (12) December Man City (18)
And what about the highest-scoring team and players each month? Not always Manchester City and Kane, with evergreen Brighton striker Glenn Murray among those to feature.
Month Top scoring team Top scoring player January Tottenham & Arsenal (12) Dele Alli/Harry Kane (5) February Everton (9) Romelu Lukaku (5) March Everton (9) Joshua King/ Lukaku (4) April Tottenham (16) Son Heung-min/Christian Benteke/Sergio Aguero (5) May Man City & Tottenham (15) Kane (8) August Man Utd (10) Lukaku/Sadio Mane (3) September Man City (17) Kane (6) October Man City (13) Leroy Sane/Glenn Murray (3) November Liverpool (11) Mohamed Salah (7) December Liverpool (20) Kane (8)
Is Man City’s 102 goals a record?
There was a time when barely a week seemed to go by without Manchester City netting four or five in a game, and they finished the year with a stunning 102 goals scored in the Premier League.
That is the most in a calendar year since the competition began in 1993; indeed no team prior to City had managed to break the 100-goal barrier.
Top-scoring Premier League teams by year Year Team Goals 2017 Man City 102 2016 Liverpool 87 2015 Man City 79 2014 Man City 89 2013 Liverpool 84 2012 Man Utd 90 2011 Man Utd 88 2010 Chelsea 91 2009 Arsenal 86 2008 Chelsea 74 2007 Man Utd/Tottenham 73 2006 Man Utd 79 2005 Chelsea 75 2004 Arsenal 86 2003 Man Utd 79 2002 Arsenal 80 2001 Man Utd 79 2000 Man Utd 95 1999 Man Utd 91 1998 Liverpool 68 1997 Man Utd 83 1996 Man Utd 75 1995 Man Utd 75 1994 Newcastle 84 1993 Man Utd 86
A bad year to be a manager?
Top left to bottom right: Frank de Boer (Crystal Palace), Craig Shakespeare (Leicester), Paul Clement (Swansea), Ronald Koeman (Everton), Tony Pulis (West Brom) and Slave Bilic (West Ham) have all lost their jobs since the start of the season
It felt like a particularly ruthless first half of the season for Premier League managers, with six leaving their posts before Christmas.
Paul Clement’s dismissal by Swansea on 20 December means the bottom four teams at the end of the year have changed their manager this season.
And it is easy to see why Swansea felt a change was necessary – all but one of the other five teams to change their manager are picking up more points per game than they were previously. Alan Pardew, at West Brom, is the exception.
So we know it’s been a pretty bad end to the year for some managers, but how about the start?
Five were dismissed before June – Mike Phelan (Hull), Claudio Ranieri (Leicester), Aitor Karanka (Middlesbrough), Walter Mazzarri (Watford) and Claude Puel (Southampton), making it 11 for the year in the Premier League. That’s the joint most in the past decade, equal with 2013.
Are English players getting more minutes?
England beat Venezuela in June to win the U20s World Cup
2017 was an incredible year of success for England at youth level.
The Three Lions won the Under-20 World Cup, the Under-19 Euros, the Toulon Tournament and finishing runners up in the Under-17 Euros, all of which bodes well for the future of the senior team.
But England Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd said earlier this year that young English players need more game time in the Premier League to boost the senior team’s chances of World Cup success.
Are they getting it?
The numbers since England’s summer of success suggest they are. English players are averaging more minutes per match than they did in three of the past four seasons.
PL minutes for English players in past five seasons Season Minutes played Matches Mins/match 2013-14 242,236 380 637.46 2014-15 263,984 380 694.69 2015-16 225,462 380 593.32 2016-17 242,032 380 636.93 2017-18 137,288 209 656.88

The top race in the Premier League is now for second place
Even with Chelsea dropping points on Sunday, the race for second is much hotter right now.
With Chelsea still pulling away from the league at the top of the Premier League table, now with a ten-point lead over second place, the battle for the runner-up in the league is now starting to become to the focus of the league.
That focus played out in a big way this weekend, with Liverpool soundly defeating Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, plus both Arsenal and Manchester United picking up wins. Those four teams are separated by just two points — Spurs and Arsenal are both on 50, with Liverpool and United on 49 and 48, respectively.
Manchester City can pull ahead of the lot with a win on Monday as they’re sitting on 49 points, but that doesn’t change that the battle for second place is becoming a close-fought affair between five very talented teams. None of the five are perfect by any means — all of them have had some pretty pronounced struggles at times this season — but when they get into form each team is wildly entertaining and can beat pretty much anyone in the league.
This isn’t a race that’s going to cool off any time soon, and unless Chelsea suddenly fall back to earth, the struggle to see who finishes behind them is going to be the highlight of the last stretch of the season, especially when these teams face off against one another like in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Tottenham this weekend.
Saturday’s scores

One of his brace of goals was a last-second penalty, but that doesn’t change that Sanchez was absolutely fantastic for Arsenal on Saturday. He’s struggled off and on this season, but right now it looks like he’s on a definite uptick in form.

If this performance was a sign that he’s heading in the right direction again, then the EPL should watch out, because that would mean that Arsenal just got a lot more dangerous.
Claudio Ranieri is running out of time
Given a vote of confidence by Leicester’s board this week, it seemed that Ranieri would have at least some time before needing to worry about losing his job, especially with the club’s statement saying that they wanted him in charge of the Foxes’ upcoming Champions League tie. But after a miserable performance on Sunday that saw Leicester slip into 18th place, time may be running out for Ranieri now.
Leicester were beaten soundly, a 2-0 loss to a Swansea City side that entered the day even with them on points and hardly impressing themselves for much of the season. In theory, Leicester should have been able to look good in this match, but instead they were utterly flat an impressive, with Swansea completely outclassing them for the majority of the match.
It was the kind of performance that will amp up the pressure on Ranieri, falling so far short of expectation and potential that the pressure on Ranieri and his squad will increase significantly in magnitude. And if Leicester don’t figure out how to vastly improve in the next ten days before the first leg of their tie against Sevilla, they’re going to get humiliated in the Champions League.
Burnley aren’t great, but they’re a lot of fun
Chelsea didn’t drop points on Sunday because their opponents played fantastically, but Burnley were still able to do just enough to frustrate their opponents and force them into making enough mistakes to keep them in the match until the end. That created the opening for Robbie Brady to have a chance to score a crucial equalizer off a late free kick — an opportunity he did not let go to waste.

It was a phenomenal free kick, and one that helps proves why Burnley made it a priority to sign Brady in January. He’s going to help make their attack a lot better than it is, and if they can improve enough we may just see them finish in the top half of the table.
Manolo Gabbiadini is taking the EPL by storm
Since joining Southampton in January, Gabbiadini has scored three goals in two matches, opening a lot of eyes and raising hopes for Southampton fans who have seen their team’s attack struggle for much of the season. It’s been fun to see such a talented striker in such good form — but perhaps it’s a little too early to raise expectations for him just yet.
We’ve seen it happen time and again: a striker comes into the EPL, sets things on fire for a little while, gets anointed as The Next Big Thing, then fades into relative obscurity. There’s a lot for Gabbiadini to prove if he’s going to avoid that kind of fate, especially since he got off to a hot start when he joined Napoli two years ago before falling out of favor and struggling for playing time for the last 18 months.
But if he does keep this form up and finally become a consistent danger in the final third — watch out. Manolo Gabbiadini has the talent to do it, he just needs to find the drive and consistency.
Sadio Mane’s return has given Liverpool a new gear
While Mane was out of the Liverpool squad during the African Cup of Nations, Liverpool’s attack was missing a certain dynamism and element of pace that only he could provide them. That element was on display in a big way against Tottenham on Saturday, and he scored a brace because of it.
.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }

Mane’s pace and trickery out wide does a lot to help open up the rest of Liverpool’s attack, which tends to be very narrow without him. His presence and ability on the flank forces teams to play a bit more honestly instead of just crowding the middle, and that gives the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino the room they need to make things happen in the middle of the pitch.
Of course, then there’s all the things Mane can do on his own — like score great goals and absolutely clown a defender or two. Liverpool are definitely much better off with him back in the side than they were with him gone.

WOLVES v MANCHESTER UNITED: Premier League match preview
Nuno Espirito Santo has probably just received his controversial VAR call last weekend.
Willy Boly was assessed as before Leander Dendoncker shot home in the aimless stalemate against Leicester.
There was confusion before the Premier League sent tweets and a clarifying e-mail to reporters saying that the goal was out of the question because, regardless of intent, a handball allows goal scoring considered a violation.
There were no such controversies for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his driving group of Manchester United players, comfortably defeating Chelsea 4-0.
But Solskjaer will know that Wolves on Molineux are not taken lightly. United lost twice in the FA Cup and the Premier League last season. Solskjaer remembers those two results well and wants to show how his summer of coaching has paid off.
Marcus Rashford celebrates after scoring the third goal against Chelsea at Old Trafford
[1945902] WOLVES: A team with a good understanding, but when does it get too much?
Whether or not Nuno likes it, wolves are expected to continue this season. They did this once last year to qualify for the Europa League. Their quality, especially in midfield, is what brings them to the top of the Premier League middle class.
This season will be one of the most demanding for the Wolves players, especially since Nuno likes to run with a small team. He likes to trust players he trusts, which is great. But assuming that further progress is being made in Europe, surely something has to be given?
Only as we go deeper into the season will we fully understand the limits of this team of Wolves.
For now, and their first home game of the season, they are in good condition.
Their central defense of three men against Ryan Bennett, Conor Coady and Boly has been arranged but can be exploited by a rapid attack.
Nuno Espirito Santo likes to run with a small team, but how long does it take before he has to think again?
It is in midfield where Wolves can control games and create very good opportunities.
Most attacks usually start with Ruben Neves or Dendoncker, who both occupy deep, central positions. Joao Moutinho has the option to move forward or change positions with Neves.
Quick, short steps are used to build up time and give less time to the opposition to get close to them.
Against Manchester United they will try to keep as much possession as possible. They will be vulnerable if one of those central midfielders loses the ball high on the court.
We saw on Sunday how easy it was for United to work the forward ball (through Pogba & # 39; s excellence) and win.
MANCHESTER UNITED: Chelsea made them look from the best side … they can stand up to defeat a side with a clear understanding from what they do?
Before we started, Chelsea made Manchester United look much better than they actually are. Or I'm wrong and in that case United will easily qualify for the Champions League.
Now that that is out of the way, it is also important to note that this United team is not terrible either.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is clearly playing his players in a style that tries to get the best out of Paul Pogba while incorporating a forward center and two forward.
Marcus Rashford was a big positive for United last weekend. He was quick, mentally sharp and finished with precision. Not only that he also seemed more aggressive in his game.
Wolves, unlike Frank Lampard's Chelsea, is a mature team in terms of their tactical intelligence. They understand what is being asked of them because they have done it 100 times.
Paul Pogba was in great shape in the victory over Chelsea, delivering a clear route to goal
That's where Solskjaer fell last season. His players were caught by a Wolves side who was really competent and comfortable in what she was asked to do.
United is now at an advanced stage of learning and has more ways to punish wolves than before
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, & a real Manchester United player & # 39 ;, according to Solskjaer. By that he means someone who can attack and defend.
He was excellent on Sunday, as he hurried down the right flank, retreating to the byline if necessary.
Anthony Martial also had a promising match against Chelsea. United will need Pogba again to reach its peak. Should he find ways to connect the attack like he did against Chelsea, United would have to find enough ways to shoot at the target.
Predicted line-ups
Wolves predicted from XI: Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Dendoncker, Neves, Moutinho, Jonny; Jimenez, Jota.
Manchester United predicted starting XI: Van Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw; Matic, Pogba; Lingard, Mata, Rashford; Martial
What do the bookmakers say?
United are the favorites to win. You can get odds of 23/20 or 5/4 at most bookmakers. Wolves are not a million miles away with 9/4 chances if you feel like a home win.
And if you think that United will score goals and keep a blank sheet for a second week in a row, so you can get chances of 10/1 for a 2-0 win or 50/1 if you like it win again 4-0.
The side of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the favorite to beat Wolves to beat on Molineux on Monday evening
Who says what?
Wolves & Pedro, # 39; Pedro Neto: & # 39; It is a very big game, but we want to win. We know the team had a good record last year against Manchester United, and now we will try to do the same again this year. & # 39;
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: & # 39; I'm looking forward to the first hurdle, because you want to see the resilience and robustness that we can bounce back when things get tough. & # 39;
IMPORTANT FACTS
Wolves lost none of their three games against Manchester United last season in all competitions (W2 D1 L0) and both won at Molineux against the Red Devils.
In the Premier League, wolves are one of only four teams that Man Utd had seen from home five or more times and lost more games than they had won (W2 D0 L3), along with Chelsea, Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday.
Man Utd lost 2 -3 to Brighton in their first away game last season – they have not done this in consecutive seasons since 1980-8 1 and 1981-82, with one of those defeats against Wolves.
Wolves are undefeated in eight Premier League home games (W6 D2), a point that includes a win over Manchester United. Wolves want to win three consecutive top flight competitions at Molineux for the first time since November 1980.
Manchester United is without a win in their last four Premier League away games (D1 L3). They last had a longer run on the road between April-November 2014 (seven races under David Moyes, Ryan Giggs and Louis van Gaal).

PETER CROUCH predicts where each Premier League side will finish
The Premier League season starts on Friday with Champions League winners Liverpool hosting Norwich.
Sportsmail columnist Peter Crouch runs the rule over each team before the big kick-off.
Manchester City are favorites for their Premier League title to be retained in the 2019-2020 season
Peter Crouch is a columnist for Sportsmail
[194590012] ARSENAL
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT: 6th
I'm not sure what i I can expect this season – but you can never reject a side of that sco res goals. If there is a threat at the top of the field, you have a chance, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette will always carry a threat. They also signed the exciting Nicolas Pepe from Lille.
However, the situation with Laurent Koscielny during the summer was a mess and there is something about Arsenal that simply does not convince me. Football is sometimes glorious and you think they can win the World Cup, but on other occasions it seems to be a team that can't even win a coin.
They look the most vulnerable to drop out of the top six
MANAGER: Unai Emery – Was Arsenal really better last season than under Arsene Wenger? Possibly, but now Emery has a backup on the transfer market and he has to finish in the top 4.
KEYMAN: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – a world-class striker. Bloom with Nicolas Pepe who supplies supply lines and is vital for Arsenal & # 39; s hope of qualifying for the Champions League.
ASTON VILLA
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT: 18th
How good is it to see them again? I have a relationship with the club, where I played for two years, and was overjoyed that they won promotion. They are also all going to stay up and have spent £ 130 million on new players this summer.
However, there are no guarantees of expenditure. Fair play for the owners to support their manager, Dean Smith, but we've seen big splashes that went wrong and Fulham immediately went back last season after an investment of £ 100 million 12 months ago.
But Villa is another club and Jack Grealish is not available to show what he can do in the Premier League. Everywhere above the 18th will represent success.
MANAGER: Dean Smith – Fantastic work to promote Villa from October 14 in May. Strongly supported in the transfer market and must get off to a good start after such large expenditures.
KEYMAN: Jack Grealish – Villa has spent a lot on new players this summer, but Grealish remains their striking star. If he can play his excellent championship form in the Premier League, Villa must survive the big time.
BOURNEMOUTH
[1945902] CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 16th
They confuse me more than any other Premier League club . Every year there has been a point where it appears that they would be banned. But then they always stay awake and always do it with a certain degree of comfort.
You cannot deny that they are a success story – it is all the more remarkable given their average presence of around 10,500. I love Callum Wilson and Josh King – strong, powerful strikers that score goals.
Eddie Howe wants young players who work hard and do everything he tells them and it works. Yet it scares me away that one day they will fall and return to the championship. They will probably stay up again this season – but it will be close!
MANAGER: Eddie Howe – Taking a large club from Bournemouth through the divisions and into the big time was impressive. It is amazing to keep them there for five seasons. Certainly a larger job beckons fast!
KEYMAN: Callum Wilson – apparently about the injury problems that have plagued him since the promotion of Bournemouth in 2015. Big new contract and recognition by England no more than he deserves. Now he just has to stay fit.
BRIGHTON
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 19th
There is no worse feeling in football than a season of football going through a fight. I had it at Stoke two years ago and I fear that the Brighton team will experience this season, given the extent to which they came down in May.
I was shocked when Chris Hughton was fired and replaced by Graham Potter. Chris is a very good manager and I think he deserved another season.
However, I see a point where things catch up with Brighton. The promoted teams are just as good as the seagulls and will target them as a team from which they can score points.
MANAGER: Graham Potter – Unproven at the highest level but impressive start to his career in Sweden and at Swansea. If he can keep Brighton high, he's ready for Potter.
KEY MAN: Lewis Dunk – Captain, leader, Brighton legend. The shape of Dunk in the past two seasons earned him an English cap. If Brighton survives, a large part comes down to Dunk.
BURNLEY
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 11th
You can be sure of one thing in the early weeks – my last club starts quickly and is as far away as possible from problems.
Sean Dyche was furious about the way they started 12 months ago and, knowing him like me, he won't let it happen again.
They have a good team and I would expect that Nick Pope is the new No. 1 now that Tom Heaton has gone to Aston Villa.
Jay Rodriguez is a good addition to a group that is honest and will cause problems for a team at Turf Moor. A place in the upper half awaits them again.
MANAGER: Sean Dyche – has done wonders at Turf Moor, but fear is taken if he can. If this is his last season, Burnley can surprise a few people with a permanent team in the Europa League.
KEYMAN: Tom Heaton – seems to have won the fight at Burnley after Tom Heaton soldered to Aston Villa. Jordan Pickford as England No. 1.
CHELSEA
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 4th
I wrote in February that if Maurizio Sarri were to leave, there was only one man to replace him. So I am very happy that Frank Lampard, whom I know so well, was that man. He deserves this opportunity. He is a good deal – the right deal.
Frank will change the atmosphere that became sour last season. They have had to deal with a transfer ban, but Christian Pulisic, a player I admire, was signed earlier and he will improve quality. I'm not going to say he can replace Eden Hazard, because nobody can.
We will all miss the magical little Belgian, but Chelsea still has enough quality left. They are in the top four of the statement.
Frank Lampard could lead Chelsea back in the top four of this season the Premier League
MANAGER: Frank Lampard – Back at the bridge and looking perfect. Transfer ban means that the young stars of the club finally get a chance. Fans will show patience, but that is what Roman Abramovich wants that to count.
KEYMAN: Ross Barkley – Impressed by the preseason and seems to have gained more freedom from Lampard. Difficult start to life on Chelsea, but this can be a big season for Barkley.
CRYSTAL PALACE
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 15th
Roy Hodgson has expressed concern about the lack of new signatures Selhurst Park and that is not going well. It is consistent with last season, which did not end in a particularly positive way.
They have lost Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United and that is a huge blow. The money they received for a local boy was fantastic, but that quality is not easy to replace.
That much depends on Wilfried Zaha. If he thrives, everything is fine and they have to stay around the table. If he is absent for a long time, they will have a hard time.
MANAGER: Roy Hodgson – The oldest manager of the Premier League, 71, had to use all his experience in a difficult summer. that has seen him lose an important player and ward off the interest in star man Zaha.
KEYMAN: Andros Townsend – greater responsibility and maturity have seen Townsend flourish in Palace. Pacy, direct and eye for purpose — Downsend could earn a England recall if it builds on last season's performance.
EVERTON
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 9th
Objectives have had a problem during the preseason, but you can't say that they didn't look at the address – Moise Kean, 25 meters from Juventus, is the kind of player that fans get excited about. I also love the signing of Fabian Delph.
I know how impatient Evertonians are for success – and how demanding they are from their players and managers.
Marco Silva looks like he can be class as his methods pay off and Everton is not far away from the top 6.
When it clicks, they form a strong team . They will achieve some good results and should really do everything to win one of the cups.
MANAGER : Marco Silva – Bad start at Goodison but tweaked tactics and Everton finished strong.
KEYMAN: Fabian Delph – underrated midfielder and one of the summer's bargains. After four years at Man City, his winning mentality could be exactly what Everton needs.
LEICESTER
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 8th
Losing Harry Maguire is great but it is not sales that will ruin their season. . I love Leicester, I love Brendan Rodgers and I think the chemistry is there to really have a good time this season.
They have excellent players from the back to the front. Jamie Vardy remains their spearhead; Demarai Gray is flourishing, Ben Chilwell and James Maddison are getting better. It is crucial that they also bought well. Ayoze Perez will reinforce an already powerful attack and last season's borrower, Youri Tielemans, has been added permanently.
Rodgers always has a big impact in his first year at a new club and I expect Leicester to do the same. They will compete for the top six
MANAGER: Brendan Rodgers – Immediate Impact Last Season Increased Expectations This time Leicester can challenge for a top six place.
Even if they don't,
KEYMAN: Jamie Vardy – Still the most important man for Leicester. Has not lost its electric pace and is always a threat. With Tielemans and Maddison feeding him, expected in the Golden Boot race.
LIVERPOOL
[1945902] CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 2nd
There was much talk about it in the city this summer fact that Jurgen Klopp did not make major signing sessions, but I don't mind. He doesn't have to spend £ 30 million on someone if he doesn't pay – so why waste money?
There is a good arrogance about the European champions. Klopp knows that he has a quality team, his players know that they will make progress again and the competition on the training field will guarantee improvement. It is the perfect atmosphere to improve.
How they stayed at Manchester City last season was remarkable. I hope the shootout for the title is another fantastic fight between two teams that I like to watch. If City fails, the Klopp team benefits. They are both so much better than the rest.
Virgil van Dijk will be the key to everything Liverpool has to offer will reach and reach the coming season.
MANAGER: Jurgen Klopp – issued big but won big last season. Klopp has transformed Liverpool and let them play brilliant football, but the painful waiting for the title continues.
KEYMAN: Virgil van Dijk – imperious. & # 39; The world's best defender has shown his then £ 75 million record as a bargain after just 18 months at Anfield. The master and commander of all this and Klopp & # 39; s most important signature so far.
MANCHESTER CITY
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 1st [194590018]
] I don't exactly put my neck on the line , but I am convinced that they will win the title again. The only thing I can see stumbling is a run in the Champions League – the competition that Pep Guardiola wants to win more than anything.
The players will feel the same, but I still don't understand why the fans put the Premier League above Europe. I know enough City supporters to know how proud they are of the best team in England and they tell me they want it again.
Without false steps they are too strong for the rest. Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero go from strength to strength; Rodri impressed me in the Community Shield and seems to be the perfect successor to Fernandinho.
City sets standards that are almost impossible to match. The team to be defeated
MANAGER: Pep Guardiola – the best in the industry. Yes, he has spent a fortune and yes, City already had a brilliant team, but he has turned them into an unstoppable winning machine that played the football of the gods.
KEYMAN: Kevin De Bruyne – the best player in the Premier League. De Bruyne missed 19 league games last season due to injuries – and City still won the title. If he can rediscover his 2017-18 form, they will stop for a while.
MANCHESTER UNITED
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 5th
For all the money they spent this summer , they remain a considerable distance from title challenges. You can't forget how their results ended last season and they still have something to prove.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a good sign, while my admiration for Harry Maguire could not be higher. I am surprised that they have not added a real flying attacker and I cannot believe that they have not tried to exploit the situation of Gareth Bale in Real Madrid.
A good year for them would be the final Champions League spot They have a lot of talent and I would say they are better than Arsenal – the challenge for them is to be better than Chelsea if they are the top four want to reach.
MANAGER: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – Can the United Legend Guardiola and Knopp be overthrown? The jury is very keen on that. Needs a good start after such a bad end of last season.
KEYMAN: Harry Maguire – once again United has paid the odds but the English man will improve their leaking defense and provide some much needed leadership.
The signing of Harry Maguire can be crucial for Manchester United and their defense
NORWICH
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 14th
I can imagine that many people put them in the protagonists for relegation. It is never easy for teams to come out of the championship, but before I write them off, let me tell you what I know about them.
I was on the bench on Carrow Road last season when I was on Stoke and saw Norwich play as a Premier League team. They are fast, pass the ball with confidence and they are dangerous. I couldn't believe how good they were – they ended up as deserved champions.
Daniel Farke is a good manager and they come to catch teams and it wouldn't surprise me if they stay up. Brighton and Newcastle will be in sight.
MANAGER: Daniel Farke – German defied expectations to bring Norwich to the championship title last season. If he can let Norwich survive, Farke will be a much sought-after man.
KEYMAN: Teemu Pukki – 29 goals in 43 games en route to the championship title last season suggests Finland striker can make the move. Norwich will need him if they avoid a season of struggle.
NEWCASTLE
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 17th
] The defining moment of their summer camera in the last week from June. Saying goodbye to a company with Rafa Benitez can be the difference when deciding whether to stay up late. That is not a criticism of Steve Bruce, but I have worked with Rafa and I know what kind of team he can do.
St James & Park is such a great place to play football, but they are faced with the very real prospect of fans who are very disappointed if the early results don't go their way.
Joelinton, the Brazilian they signed from Hoffenheim, are exciting locals but will the Premier League light up?
I have my doubts about everything. With Rafa they were guaranteed to remain in the middle of the table. Bruce has the job he has always dreamed of – I hope in his interest that it doesn't become toxic.
MANAGER: Steve Bruce – He needs a good start to make fans unhappy with his appointment. With Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool to play in the first five games, which can be tricky. A tough season ahead.
KEYMAN: Joelinton – Newcastle has broken his transfer record to sign the great Brazilian and will hope to have found their latest iconic No. 9. Looking good for the Premier League.
SHEFFIELD UNITED
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 20th
It's good for the Premier League team that remains in the division. The atmosphere on Bramall Lane will fluctuate during the first few weeks. Nobody expected them to be where they are, but will they play as they did in the championship or change their style?
I saw many of their games last season and they used unconventional tactics, such as central defenders running overlap to get crosses. It was adventurous and it paid off.
However, if they are arrogant against the best teams, they will get into trouble. You cannot leave a gap in the Premier League. I wish Chris Wilder and his team all the best, but I am worried about them.
MANAGER: Chris Wilder – another who defeated the chances of winning promotion. It will be fascinating to see how this talented English boss is doing in the Premier League. Has made a number of interesting signing sessions, but is facing a tough fight.
KEY MAN: Oliver Norwood – started all four Euro 2016 games in Northern Ireland and had the Blades hit midfield. Good stroke range and visibility. How he deals with stepping is the key to survival.
SOUTHAMPTON
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 13th
The start my old team made last season left me worried about their chances of survival, but Ralph Hasenhuttl had a huge impact when he replaced Mark Hughes.
They are a traditional Premier League club and I hope they will stay that way for a long time
Hasenhuttl looks like he has something to him and a summer to really impose his methods, you would expect progression.
Danny Ings will be the key, provided they can keep him fit, while the signing of Che Adams from Birmingham is exciting. They must stay away from problems.
MANAGER: Ralph Hasenhuttl – based on last season's evidence when he transformed Southampton, enough to suggest that Hasenhuttl could enjoy a long career in the Premier League. Tactically sharp and innovative, the Austrian will look this season.
KEYMAN: Nathan Redmond – a little bit of everything. Fast, tricky, creative and can score goals. If Redmond plays well, Southampton plays well.
TOTTENHAM
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 3rd
The closest challengers to Manchester City and Liverpool. Forget some of the whimsical results they had last season when they struggled with fatigue and injuries – Tottenham is a brilliant side and will comfortably finish third again.
They have spent a lot of money and the arrival of Tanguy Ndombele is exciting – it will add drive to midfield. Everyone knows Harry Kane, who will be desperate to win the Golden Boat again, but I want to emphasize the importance of Son Heung-min.
He is a top player, one of the best players in Europe and I think he will be even better this season. His Alli will also be fired. I like to watch Tottenham play and think they are going from strength to strength.
Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be desperate to win this golden boot season to win
MANAGER: Mauricio Pochettino – Could this be his last season on Spurs? Has done wonders against richer rivals so far, but Argentina needs some silverware to show for all its beautiful work.
KEYMAN: Harry Kane – So much more for his game than goals but few better strikers around. If he stays fit, Spurs expects a fifth consecutive finish in the top four – and Kane wins the Golden Boot.
WATFORD
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 10th
I thought they were a difficult team to build affinity with , the owners constantly chopped and changed their manager and players came and went. I was surprised that they had stayed in the Premier League and expected that they would be relegated. They have confused me for so long!
It's only fair, so I praise what they did. Watford has defied the convention, but now they look like an established top-half team and Javi Gracia has given them great stability. He has done an excellent job and many rival presidents will keep a close eye on his progress.
Losing the FA Cup final as they did was terrible, but there will be no permanent damage. Craig Dawson from West Brom is a good signature. They will remain physically strong.
MANAGER: Javi Gracia – surprised everyone, even Watford fans, last season. The FA Cup run had an impact on the form of competition, but Watford may have just found a manager that they want to keep for longer than five minutes.
KEYMAN: Gerard Deulofeu – Inspiring achievements in FA Cup semi-final showed how influential the former Barca man can be. If he can find more consistency, Watford can improve last season's efforts.
WEST HAM
CROUCHY & # 39; S VERDICT – 12th
] The biggest decision they took this summer was the right – Marko Arnautovic had to be sold. Marko is a great attacker, but he made no secret of his wish to play in China. Sometimes you have to let players go for the welfare of the collective.
They don't have to worry either. Manuel Lanzini and Andriy Yarmolenko should be operational again this season and the £ 45m signing by Sebastien Haller is exciting. There will be times when West Ham is exciting and there will be times when they are inconsistent.
It would be great to see them win a trophy. They're in the same group as Everton – it's been too long since they had something to celebrate.
MANAGER: Manuel Pellegrini – has backed up on the transfer market and will be confident of improving the mid-table finish of last season by playing trademark attacking style .
STAR MAN: Declan Rice – Breakthrough season last year ended with a deserved call-in in England. Will provide a solid foundation to give West Hammers freedom. their praise in this supplement 12 months ago. Stoke had played against them in a friendly preseason and they looked so good to us that I knew they would do well. They were better than good – they were fantastic and deservedly qualified for Europe.
They may have lost the surprise element, but knowing what a team is doing and stopping are two different things.
Wolves are so good that I can see them influencing the title race. They are not going to challenge the title, but they are one of the few teams that can achieve results against Liverpool and Manchester City. Wolves have good players and a top manager – I think they are getting closer to the top six than anyone.
MANAGER: Nuno Espirito Santo – sensational first season in the top flight, playing an exciting football brand. Larger clubs have taken note of his talents.
KEY MAN: Ruben Neves – so much more for his game than spectacular goals. De Portugese middenvelder kan van alles een beetje doen en is onder de indruk van zijn debuutseizoen in de Premier League.

New season, same old Manchester City.
The champions have picked up where they left off last season and put six past Huddersfield, while one goalkeeper gave himself the chance of a unique hat-trick.
The newly promoted sides continue to struggle and two Chelsea players seem to have a telepathic connection.
BBC Sport takes a look at the key stats from the Premier League weekend…
Ruthless Aguero
Sergio Aguero reminding us how many he scored against Huddersfield
Manchester City romped to the title last season and smashed a number of records on the way, including:
Most points: 100
Most wins: 31
Consecutive wins: 18
Most away wins: 16
Most goals: 106
Highest goal difference: +79
Biggest points margin to second: 19
Most passes in a game: 903
And they put on another devastating attacking display in their 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s side were given a helping hand by Terriers goalkeeper Ben Hamer on more than one occasion, but managed to find the net six times from their 32 efforts on goal.
But City’s barrage of more than a shot every three minutes was a long way off their own record of 44 attempts in a game, clocked up against QPR in May 2012. Does that game ring a bell?
Ah yes, it was another ruthless display by striker Sergio Agueroooooo, who has now entered the list of top 10 Premier League goalscorers.

Aguero has netted 146 times for City since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and now has the same amount of goals as former Tottenham and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham.
Another ex-Spurs frontman, Les Ferdinand, is the next in Aguero’s sights with 149 goals, while former England forward Michael Owen struck one more.
Ratio-wise, Aguero has the best record of any player in the top 10. He has found the net every 106 minutes – 16 minutes better than former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.
The Argentine’s hat-trick was his ninth for City, taking him second on that list alongside former Liverpool and Leeds striker Robbie Fowler. Newcastle great Alan Shearer leads the way with 11 trebles.
Will Aguero break that record?
Top of the spots
Being a goalkeeper is a thankless task. Make a save and you get a pat on the back; make a mistake and people will remind you about it for the rest of your life.
Cardiff keeper Neil Etheridge was on Fulham’s books for six years but never managed a top-flight appearance for them. However, he finally got his break this season in spectacular fashion.
Etheridge, the first Filipino to play in the Premier League, kept out Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson’s penalty last week – and followed that up by saving Kenedy’s spot-kick for Newcastle on Saturday.
It made him the first keeper to save a penalty in each of his first two appearances in the division, and the last man to keep out spot-kicks in consecutive matches in one season was former Denmark international Thomas Sorensen for Stoke in 2009.
Neil Warnock’s Cardiff side face Everton next Saturday and Etheridge could become the first goalkeeper to complete the hat-trick of saving penalties in three straight games.
Marco Silva’s players had better start practising.
Goalkeepers with the most penalties saved in the Premier League Penalties faced Penalties saved David James 63 13 Thomas Sorensen 50 12 Shay Given 66 10 Brad Friedel 51 10 Mark Schwarzer 49 10 Jussi Jaaskelainen 52 9 Robert Green 35 9 Heurelho Gomes 34 9 Edwin van der Sar 31 8 Simon Mignolet 28 8
Comeback kings
Never write Bournemouth off.
The south coast club maintained their 100% winning start to the season by beating West Ham at London Stadium, after victory over Cardiff on the opening day.
But Eddie Howe’s side did it the hard way again, falling behind to Marko Arnautovic’s penalty before Wilson and Steve Cook turned the match around.
The Cherries have now won four consecutive top-flight games for the first time and ended a three-year run of not winning successive games in London.
The comeback against the Hammers means they have gained 19 points from losing positions in the Premier League this year – seven more than any other side.
The team to gain the most points from losing positions in Premier League history? Tottenham with 350. Yep, we’re surprised too.
Bullying the new boys
Talking of Tottenham…
There has been plenty of chat about a lack of summer signings and issues with their new stadium, but it has not affected the form of the players on the pitch.
England captain Harry Kane ended his barren run in the month of August by netting for Spurs in their 3-1 win over Premier League newcomers Fulham.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have now won a competition record 19 straight games at home against newly promoted sides, with Chelsea’s 16-game run, which ended in 2001, the next best.
The finest overall record – home and away – against promoted sides was Chelsea’s 27 game winning streak between October 2002 and November 2006.
Meanwhile, the Cottagers and their fellow promoted sides have found it difficult on their return to the top flight, with all three teams winless after two games, though Wolves and Cardiff have picked up a point each.
You have to look back to the 2004-05 season for the longest wait for one of the newly promoted teams to get a win on the board.
Crystal Palace, Norwich and West Brom all failed to earn three points in their first seven games, before Palace and the Baggies were victorious on their eighth attempt.
Deadly duos
Lampard and Drogba, best friends forever
Chelsea finished fifth last season but have started the new campaign in superb fashion under new manager Maurizio Sarri, winning both of their games so far.
Their “chaotic classic” against London rivals Arsenal contained end-to-end action and five goals, one of those being scored by Blues striker Alvaro Morata.
The Spaniard has struggled for form and confidence since January – only finding the net twice in the league – but he is more than happy to convert when receiving the ball from compatriot Cesar Azpilicueta.
Azpilicueta has provided seven assists for Morata since the start of last season, which is impressive for a defender, and the same number as Riyad Mahrez – now of Manchester City – for Leicester team-mate Jamie Vardy during that period.
But they have a long way to go to match the record held by a former Chelsea duo, with Frank Lampard laying on 24 assists for Didier Drogba between 2004 and 2012.
Best friends forever.
