Today was a good day! Thank you Tracey for humoring me when I brought my own fun bandaid and asked for a sticker. I visited my parents a week after their second shot. It was like a huge weight had been lifted; they were lighter and happier. I thought it was like being released from a cage. ✨New Year - New Me✨ That’s right! I’ve been privileged enough to get the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine today! My superpowers now include super strength, super speed, telepathy & matter manipulation! 🦸🏽‍♀️👊🏽 But in all seriousness, I’ve never been more exited to receive a shot! I have never felt the blessings of science and community resilience more then I did today. I understand there is fear and uncertainty about the vaccines. I know people feel they have been rushed. Do your research! Read the peer reviewed articles. Understand that mRNA vaccines have been around for years. Understand that with expansive funding, the removal of bureaucratic barriers, and the international science community coming together, it’s a lot easier to get the job done, like developing a vaccine. And once you’ve gathered that data, make the decision that’s right for you. This was the decision that was right for me. I’m immune compromised and at high risk of harm from COVID-19. I also work in residential treatment, with a current job site that has been declared by Public Health as being in a state of COVID-19 outbreak. These situations increase my risk and push me towards choosing the vaccine 💉 Additionally, the barriers some face, I do not. I’m not pregnant or breast feeding and I do not need to worry about fertility. I don’t have a heart condition or other conditions that could put me at risk from the side effects that occur from the vaccine. I’m also a military brat. Vaccines are a part of my life. I’ve never had a need to shy away or distrust them. Lastly, though I’m a POC, my community and heritage doesn’t come with a history of abuse and trauma brought on by the medical field, like the Black community. I have no trauma or reason to distrust the research. So remember whatever decision you make when the vaccine is made available to you, make it with grace. Provide others with the same grace, if their decision is different. First dose of COVID-19 vaccine done! It’s been a long, incredibly frustrating year for me but things are finally looking up. If you had said a year ago that we would have several approved, safe, effective vaccines and that all adults in Canada would get at least one dose by the start of summer, I would’ve had a hard time believing you.
