“And…here. For your generous help.”
The mayor lifted the lid of the wooden chest, revealing a small fortune of gold and gems within. The shieldmage standing on the other side of the box leaned forward, clearly intrigued.
“For what, just casting my shield spells?” Teyo muttered.
“Sure! I’ve never seen magic like that, before! And you did save our village, after all.”
The planeswalker awkwardly gripped his arm before replying. “Well…where I come from, there’s plenty of better shieldmages than I.”
“Well, where I come from,” chuckled the mayor, as they gestured to the room around them, “there aren’t. So, quit being so modest!”
“Ohhhh…fine. I’m grateful for…what are these?”
Teyo picked up a glittering ruby in his hand. The mayor tilted their head, confused by the confusion.
“You mean…the gemstones? Currency, much like the gold, or at least it can be traded for it. You’ve got a ruby, there, but there’s also sapphires, diamonds, and so on.”
“Diamonds! You barter with-” Teyo stopped abruptly, unceremoniously dropping the ruby back onto the rest of the treasure. “What a strange custom, using a deadly weapon as currency.”
The mayor’s tilted head angled yet further to the side.
“Deadly…weapon?”
Teyo’s eyes widened, and he turned away in a futile effort to hide his embarrassed blush. “Oh. Right. I guess you don’t have diamond storms here, huh?”
“Correct. We certainly don’t have…whatever those are?”
“Trust me,” Teyo chuckled, “you don’t want to know.”
[Headcanon: I bet it baffles Teyo to see that other planes use diamonds as currency!]

MTG Planeswalker Soulmate AU
@stormconduit Full outline of the soulmate AU per plane including some walkers from unknown planes
EDIT: Forgot to put soulmate method initially lol
AU where soulmates are a thing, but the method of finding your soulmate changes depending on the plane.
Methods are one sided when your soulmate is on a different plane.
Ex A Dominarian would have the name of their Ravnican Soulmate, but the Ravnican would not have their name and would instead get their skills.
When on the same plane, methods become mutual.
Ex: If the Dominarian and Ravnican were on the same plane, the Ravnican would develop the Dominarian’s name (in addition to having their skills) and the Dominarian would develop the Ravnican’s skills (in addition to having their name).
Alara: Ajani/Tezzeret
The heartbeat of your soulmate is on your wrist (similar to the line on a heart monitor)
When we go back to Theros (and Elspeth probably comes back) Ajani sees the heartbeat on his wrist start back up
Amonkhet: Samut
Soulmates cannot lie to eachother
I liked the idea of Djeru's conflict between knowing Samut couldn't lie to him, but also refusing to accept everything he knows is wrong
Dominaria: Urza/Karn/Bolas/Ugin/Venser/Jaya/Freylise/Teferi/Windgrace/Serra/Liliana
The name of your soulmate as well as a title signifying their greatest accomplishment on your wrist
This was primarily due to the focus on history/sagas on Dominaria with accomplishments being a significant part of ones identity
I also liked the idea of Urza's soulmate (probably Yawgmoth) having "Urza, Destroyer of Worlds" on their wrist

Idk, this is one of the ones that seemed the most fairy-taley

Storytelling in Magic: the Gathering Panel at ECCC 2019
Yesterday was hectic, so I’m only sitting down now to give the cliff notes on yesterday’s panel! It was a lot of fun, and some cool information was revealed. The panel was moderated by Del Ray’s Editorial Director, Tricia Narwani (far left), and featured (from left to right) Django Wexler, Greg Weisman, Nic Kelman, Me(!), and Steve Sunu. Thank you Jim Casale for Live Tweeting it, I’m following Jim’s tweets here to remind me what was said. Check out Jim’s thread for more images.
The first reveal was in the panelist introductions, Django Wexler is writing a 20 chapter prequel ‘novel’ available through the Del Ray website - Sign-up for Random House’s Newsletter to get access. Django’s stories will feature Ral Zarek, Vraska, Kaya, Niv-Mizzet, and Lavinia, and is set during the time period the Gatewatch is away from Ravnica. Django’s stories will feature his new original character Hekara, a cheerful Rakdos emissary.
There was a lot of discussion about Ravnica and Magic storytelling in general, and I was very funny, but I think the revelations about the story are what people want. Here’s some more on Ravnica: War of the Spark, Greg Weisman’s novel.
Teyo Verada is 17-years-old and has only recently become a planeswalker. He’s the ‘new reader’ POV character for the book (one of many POV characters), and his first planeswalk is to Ravnica during Ravnica: War of the Spark, so he doesn’t known anything about the multiverse or Ravnica. He was originally going to be mid-to-late 20s, but he was aged down to fit the direction Greg Weisman wanted to take his character.
Teyo is from a plane called Gobakhan, where civilization lives between two huge storms known as the Eastern and Western Cloud. Teyo is an acolyte in the Order of the Shieldmage, which protects towns from diamondstorms. He’s also the worst acolyte in the order.
Teyo’s tour guide on Ravnica is Rat, Greg’s new original character. Rat is a 16-year-old girl (real name Araithia Shokta) who is torn between joining the Selesnyan, Gruul, and Rakdos guilds. Magali Villeneuve, who did the cover for Ravnica: War of the Spark, also did character art for Rat.

Greg and Django have collaborated on plot beats between the stories, and Greg liked Hekara so much, he made Rat and Hekara friends.
Greg’s second novel to will feature Teyo, Rat, Kaya, and Liliana as main characters, with Jace, Ral Zarek, and Vraska.
Those are all the major news bits, once I find a recording of the panel I’ll share it.

Liliana Vess has finally earned her chance at redemption!
For those of you who don’t know, or haven’t read the extensive background of Liliana on my muse page (I don’t blame you, it’s a lot) this might not make much sense but I wanted to talk about it anyway because it’s very important to me.
Liliana isn’t a hero. She isn’t quite a villain either. Liliana Vess is simply selfish. Selfish and extremely powerful which is an awful combination. Not only is she a Planeswalker, but she was also born in a time where Planeswalkers were akin to Gods. The fabric of the multiverse changed due to an event known as the Mending, and she lost a huge part of her power, but she is still said to be one of, if not THE most powerful necromancer in the entire multiverse.
She looks out for number one before anyone else. She kills without mercy, she uses death as a tool. She has betrayed friends, family, and even the man she loved all for her own selfish gain. With the release of the latest MTG novel, War of the Spark: Forsaken, Liliana has---after over 200 years---finally grown sick of living with herself. All the betrayal she has ever committed, all the innocent people she killed, all the disgusting things she was forced to do for those holding her soul hostage became too heavy a burden to carry. The woman who would have killed death himself if it meant she got to keep on living was finally ready to die because she could no longer live with herself.
A ghost-assassin, a shieldmage, and a rat saved Liliana’s life. Kaya was tasked with killing Liliana but Teyo and Rat believed Liliana deserved a second chance. They believed it with every part of themselves and even convinced Kaya to reconsider. Liliana was ready to let Kaya kill her, but Teyo and Rat convinced Liliana herself that she just needed some time and a chance to be her best self. Liliana gave up the Chained Veil, she gave up the relationships that mattered to her by feigning her own death, and she even gave up her own name.
Liliana Vess is dead to the multiverse. Ana Iora lives on. Ana Iora is committed to being her very best self. Ana Iora isn’t going to let this second chance go to waste. She has people that believe in her, people that are going to keep her straight. Ana Iora is Liliana’s redemption.

In Today’s Magic Story...
Ravnica: War of the Spark -- Old Friends and New
Yes, despite all that has happened, we still have Magic Story online and for free! What a miracle! Now maybe we can know what’s going on in the War of the Spark. Or at least some of it. Anywho, enough chitchat -- STORYTIME!!!
I.
What a power move, using roman numerals and punctuation.
Our I. protagonist is Rat, who I think is a character from the novel? I haven’t read it, so I wouldn’t know. And they’re meeting a crush/role-model Hekara, a Rakdos performer.
Except we were on the ground not up on a high wire, and there were no blades or actual blood involved.
This time.
What happened previous times? Yeah it’s the Rakdos, etc., but I still want to know...!
Oh shit Hekara is Rados’ emissary! But why would he want to keep an eye on Ral Zarek? I mean sure, he’s being blackmailed by Bolas and all, but why would Rakdos care if the Izzet are acting suspiciously?
Okay, so Niv-Mizzet is still alive. Give it some time.
Goblins can put out fires pretty well.
So Ral was already planning the beacon at this point...
Messages to Kaya, Tomik Vrona (both Orzhov); Vraska; Lavinia; and Hekara? Seems a bit odd.
The Rakdos tip messengers in razor blades. I love it.
Really Ral. You’re having a Rakdos cultist activate the beacon. Sure bud, you do you.
Oh? Hekara mentioned the multiverse? She’s either a planeswalker or knows about planeswalking. Otherwise, it wouldn’t make sense for normal people to know about other worlds.
Rat’s real name is Araithia.
Rat’s either from, or just lives in, Gruul territory.
Well, we know who the sand-covered boy isn’t: Anakin.
II.
You just have blood-red berries on your belts in Ravnica? I mean, with all the pickpockets, if one’s just looking to feed themselves, it’d save a lot of time...
Okay, kid, stop running your sand-covered arm over your wound. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
Woah, lore dump by Rat, here we go!
Rat’s full name is Araithia Shokta
She has a godfather centaur
She’s gateless, but was born into Gruul.
She has friends in Rakdos and Selesnya. Opposite ends of the spectrum.
Healing magic is a bit pricey.
Rat’s a pretty decent medic, but doesn’t have healing magic. She can steal bandages, though.
Oh shit, it’s Teyo! Boy just planeswalked over here! Poor thing...
Teyo is part of the Monastic Order of the Shieldmage, which helps during diamondstorms. The plane he’s from is Gobakhan.
And Rat knows about planeswalkers! And she overheard Ral discussing it with Vraska. Stealth 100.
"I think maybe the first time, it's like an accident or, no, um, I mean not on purpose. Like an involuntary flight thing. Like to save your life maybe? Was your life in danger, maybe?
"He stared at me wide-eyed. Wider-eyed than he stared at the river, anyhow. "How— how'd you know that?"
Maybe because you’re covered in sand and had a gash on your forehead?
Also, yeah, it’s pretty much standard rule to planeswalk when your life is in danger -- except for Samut. She planeswalked via sheer joy.
Rat adopts Teyo. I love her already!
Someone in strange clothes covered in sand and a gash on their forehead shows up: Ravnicans don’t even bother.
Come to think of it, is there even sand on Ravnica?
Abbot Barrez runs a monastery on Gobakhan. The monastery’s probably in Oasis, a big (not that big) city.
I love how quickly Rat’s taking into account other worlds existing, and guessing how their society works. If I were from Ravnica, I’d be confused at how such a small thing like carpenters could have their own guild. I’d guess they’d be GW?
Great, guy and gal meet and already there’s romance in the air...
Yeah, Jace is missing. In other news, the sky is U!
We turned a corner, and I stopped in my tracks. We had meandered our way to Tenth District Plaza, and I found myself staring up at a tall obelisk in the center of the plaza topped by the statue of a dragon. An evil dragon, if I had to guess.
III.
Okay, that’s a bit odd, even for Ravnica. A pyramid shows up and no one bats an eye? How’d it get there? Is it a planar overlay? Mind magic? I have so many questions!!!
Nicky B has arrived!
Welp, there goes Jace’s office...
How are you a little bit psychic, Rat? How???
IV.
Teyo murmured, "Something's emerging from that geometry . . ."
Well he should know: he is geometry wizard.
Oh shit she’s using the chain veil. And screaming.
Gee, Teyo, you’re a shieldmage. Conjure up a shield.
Oh hey, Ral’s there! And Kaya! Both ready to turn on Bolas!
Yes, maybe you can try and use your psychic abilities to help them, Rat.
Okay Rat, how do you know what a cartouche is? It may just be for us, the audience, but that’s walking a thin line.
Hooray! Shieldmage! Sidenote, his magic seems to involve constant chanting. Also a circle by his ear.
Master Zarek addressed Teyo: "You're a Planeswalker."
"I'm a what?"
Oh, Mr. Greg Weisman, you shouldn’t have...!
Yes, it was worth waiting this long to make this meme.
Also it is impossible to find a blank version of the meme. I would’ve made one myself, but I’ve got work soon.
Oh wow, Ral has planeswalker-identifying goggles. The power of science is amazing!
Okay, avengers assembling, let’s see if we can identify everyone:
Someone in the sky could be Tamiyo or Ob Nixilis
Lavinia is there, along with someone with a greatsword. Could be Gideon?
Jace -- for once -- is in Ravnica!
Chandra and Jaya, obvs.
Okay I’m gonna call BS on this one. There are no leonin on Ravnica. Maybe Rat’s psychic power is knowing instinctively things she shouldn’t as a character.
Also Karn is there.
Or she could just go through the rollcall for me, thanks. Gideon (savor every moment he has in the story), Teferi, Chandra, Jaya, Ajani, Karn.
Gideon thinks his name is Teyonraht instead of Teyo and Rat. Oh, Gideon...! I miss you already you’re too pure...!
V.
Liliana, you have some ‘splaning to do for Gideon...
Or, y’know, you could just stand there, stoically...
Teyo Verada is his full name!
Technically, wouldn’t they be eye-sockets rather than eyes? So they’re stabbing them in the brain instead of the eyes...
I wonder what that earring does or is for... I suppose I’d have to purchase the novel to find out, -grumble grumble-
Oh I just realized! Gideon’s using the blackblade! So yeah, he’s gaining the strength of the eternals, I think. Don’t quote me on that.
Kaya, girl, you just released all those Orzhov spirits that could’ve been used to fight. You shouldn’t be participating in this conversation.
Oh. Hekara’s dead. Oh...
And there it is, the first story of WAR! I tried to meld the as-I-read-it-free-flow style with more analytic informative style, and I think it worked well here. I feel like i’m back to form, and I’m thrilled to have Magic Story once again!
We got bells! Performers! Blood! Beacons! Firefighting goblins! Sand! Plotdump! Diamondstorms! Gobakhan! Understanding other planes! Carpentry! Adoption! Evil dragons! Liliana! Chain Veil! Dreadhorde! Kaya! Ral! Harry Potter! The gang(tm)! And a legitametly sad death of a minor character...
...
But will we get to see more Gideon before the end??? Stay tuned!!

I have a bunch of thoughts about the War of the Spark novel but I JUST DISCOVERED THERE ARE JAPANESE ANIME VERSIONS OF ALL THE PLANESWALKERS IN THIS SET AND I NEED TO RATE THEM ALL LET’S GO
First off, all images are from here, and credit to their respective artists (listed on the card). In color order, we have:
Karn, the Great Creator: Looks pretty much the same. Like the warping effect of the scenery around him though, and he looks really mad. Minus points for forgetting he wears pants now, but the English artist forgot too so I can’t ding them too hard. 6/10.
Ugin, the Ineffable: All of Ugin’s cards kinda look like this, but there’s not much else you can do with him. Like the more aggressive action pose than his English art. 6/10 did not need the crotch shot though.
Gideon Blackblade: The English art is actually way more anime than this one. This Gideon just looks bored. 3/10.
Teyo, the Shieldmage: Now this is what I’m talking about. Clearly an anime take on the same model as the photorealistic English art, but jazzed up with a super-cool action pose as befits someone in the middle of a massive war. 10/10.
The Wanderer: The Wanderer already had a super-anime look and this art brings it home. Love the slash extending over the text box. Looks like the scene that comes right before the English art, like this is the freeze-frame ninja slash and the English one is the walking away while your enemy slowly falls down dead. 9/10.
Jace, Wielder of Mysteries: IT’S JOJO’S JACE. JOJACE. Jace never gets to have cool action poses and this one is long overdue. He is definitely about to wield a mystery into an Eternal’s face. 10/10 go get ‘em Jace.
Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor: Hard to pin down the exact difference, but I like this art way less than the English version. I had to double-check to make sure it was the same character; it’s so generic and has none of the same vibe. Then again the English version was done by Villeneuve so maybe it’s not a fair competition. 2/10.
Narset, Parter of Veils: This is a beautiful portrait of Narset back when she was 12. Anime has a major problem drawing any woman between the age of 18 and 65 and Narset is just the first victim in this list. Everything else looks amazing; it’s especially a shame here because Narset has that flowing kung-fu silks look that’s right in the anime wheelhouse. 5/10 what could have been.
Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage: He MAD. Almost too mad. Davriel looks so much bigger and scarier in this art that I had to make sure it wasn’t Ob Nixilis. Super-cool final boss style but maybe too super-cool for someone who’s actually a skinny Innistrad shut-in. Kinda generic pose too. 6/10.
Liliana, Dreadhorde General: They brought in Yoshitaka Amano for the mythic, huh? I know I dinged Narset for looking 12 and this Lili looks even younger (if possible) but Amano does have this weird abstracted style and the rest of her looks real spooky. She looks more like a yokai than a person - like this is something you’d get killed by at the finale of a really spooky Japanese horror game. Normally that’d be a good look for Lili but this is the one set where she’s supposed to be at least a little human, so 8/10.
Ob Nixilis, the Hate-Twisted: Big mad demon lad. Not a lot you can do with Ob Nixilis, really. 5/10 did their best with generic material.
Chandra, Fire Artisan: Chandra in the English art always looks like she’s about to throw a fireball, but never does. Now she finally gets to. It’s a generic anime action pose but not one we’ve gotten with Chandra so I’m for it, and she doesn’t look toooooo twelve. Maybe 15. Good colors. 9/10 nice Kirby hand.
Jaya, Venerated Firemage: Was worried about this one because anime doesn’t handle older women well in art, but it’s not too bad. Clearly different from Chandra’s art, which is always gonna be a problem when they’re in the same set. Like her neat twirly staff trick. Something is weird about her face though. Like it was painted on after the rest of it. IDK. 6/10.
Sarkhan, the Masterless: This is the only time I’ve actually been intimidated by Sarkhan. 9/10 doesn’t have a dragon in the art.
Tibalt, Rakish Instigator: Similar to the above, this is the only time I’ve been interested in Tibalt as a character. A way better rendition of the epithet “Rakish Instigator.” Absolutely your friend’s Problematic Fave from an anime they describe as “Hellsing but with more magical girls.” 10/10 would make an excellent Bloodborne NPC.
Arlinn, Voice of the Pack: Same as Narset, this is great art of Arlinn like thirty years ago. Love the dynamic pose (though I can’t figure out what her hand is doing with that hammer), but real Arlinn is a battle-scarred Sigourney Weaver and there aren’t even any wolves. 4/10 needs more wolves.
Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter: This one is kinda cheating since Jiang was developed specifically for the Chinese market and is basically an anime character already, but still. Look how pumped he is. Look at Mowu. Look how good of a boy he is. If this were the English art people would be getting mad that he doesn’t look Chinese but that’s a whole stew of identity issues I’m not getting anywhere near. 8/10 adorable good boyes.

Vivien, Champion of the Wilds: What did I just say about Nissa? What did I just say. The action lines swooping out of the art across the frame & text box are cool and that’s the only reason it gets a point. 1/10.
Ajani, the Greathearted: He is a big pretty kitty but honestly this art is kind of a letdown. Given anime’s love of cat-people, this is the place where I’d expect the fanservice, but it’s just basically a model-sheet pose of Ajani. Looks like a bad alter of Brimaz, King of Oreskos. Honestly I’d have expected the English version of this card to be the Japanese one, and vice versa. 3/10 he still a big fluffy kitty.
Domri, Anarch of Bolas: This is RAD. If Domri had to bow out (spoilers) this is the kind of card art to do it on. Beautiful colors, furious pose, avoids the “young boy or butch lesbian” look that most of his other art falls into (that’s not a joke; I’ve fielded multiple questions about his gender from confused new players). Any feral teenager would be thrilled to look this badass. Gruul SMASH. 10/10.
Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God: Is this another artist like Amano who has a kinda stylized look? Because otherwise this is just...bad. Not at all befitting of a dragon-god. You’d think with all of Ravnica before him he’d be able to do better. 2/10.
Ral, Storm Conduit: Honestly can’t decide how I feel about this art. The detail is amazing and the lightning is killer but there’s just something weird about Ral. Maybe he’s not smirking enough. Maybe his legs are too big. I want to like this more than I do, but I don’t. 7/10.
Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord: I’m so mad about this art because it makes Sorin look way cooler than he has any right to. The sword, the coat, the swirling ribbons of blood. But anime’s always had a way with vampires, so Sorin is the undeserving beneficiary of a skilled Jojo’s upgrade. 8/10 it was ME ALL ALONG yeah you know the joke.
Tamiyo, Collector of Tales: Tamtam’s another character whose East Asian origin makes her very well-suited to the anime look. In fact I’d say her white skin and complicated ears/headdress look turns out better in an anime style than a photorealistic one. Her skeptical look and halo of floating scrolls are just the icing on the cake. 9/10 dinged a point because the happy Ravnica skyline behind her is a weird choice and ill-suited to the mood.
Teferi, Time Raveler: Anime seems to do a lot better with middle-aged men than middle-aged women. A perfectly serviceable, if bland, Teferi. 5/10.
Angrath, Captain of Chaos: He EXTREMELY MAD. Angrath’s signature red-hot chains are perfect for a swirling anime post and the artist took good advantage of them. If anything he’s almost too bestial, though - Angrath is actually a loving family man and blacksmith who’s so furious because he was trapped on Ixalan for decades away from his home and loved ones. 7/10 somehow too mad.
Ashiok, Dream Render: Now that’s how you draw an inscrutable dream-creature who wields your deepest nighmares. 10/10 love the way they seem to be looking the player in the eye, as if they’re about to conjure your specific personal fears.
Dovin, Hand of Control: Perfectly serviceable Dovin art but I don’t like the thopters and that is unforgiveable. 0/10 because fuck this guy, seriously, and 0/10 on the English art for also having bad thopters while we’re at it.
Huatli, the Sun’s Heart: Huatli also suffering a little de-aging here but I’ll let it slide because she absolutely looks like the main character of a cult 90s anime and I would watch the hell out of it. Major Nausicaa vibe here, but with dinosaurs. Sign me up. 9/10 bad riding posture though.
Kaya, Bane of the Dead: Kaya with the straight-up Ghibli treatment here. There’s nothing technically wrong here but it’s totally the wrong mood and pose for her. I’d watch that Ghibli movie though. 4/10.
Kiora, Behemoth-Beckoner: A pretty literal interpretation of the epithet but who cares, it’s badass and way more tasteful than I feared we might get for the one planeswalker who could plausibly be drawn with tentacles. Love the attention paid to the water and the details of it splashing off her fins. 8/10 is that a walrus? but like with tusks on the bottom jaw? upside down walrus?
Nahiri, Storm of Stone: Repeat after me: NAHIRI IS LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLD. SHE DOES NOT LOOK LIKE SHE’S FOURTEEN. She looks in her twenties at the youngest. Reminds me of Mara Sov from Destiny, who is also thousands of years old, looks in her twenties, and gets drawn like she’s 12. Even apart from the de-aging this is just awkward art. The pose is bizarre, the background is weirdly photorealistic, and Nahiri has no expression. 3/10 at least it isn’t a boobs & butt pose.
Saheeli, Sublime Artificer: I...do not know what is going on here with Saheeli’s face. Or her body proportions, really. I guess it’s supposed to be foreshortened but her gormless expression and the weird Lisa Frank colors make me think of a Disney Channel cartoon about planeswalkers. The beautiful detail on the flowing metal is nice but the rest is just strange. 4/10 nice metal dragon though.
Samut. Tyrant-Smasher: I really like this art but it makes me think a lot of people are going to make jokes about Samut “looking like a man” or “barely being a woman,” especially since her name isn’t very clearly gendered, and that just makes me sad. The art itself is nice and totally on-model for her, though her shoulders are kind of weirdly broad and it’s a shame they didn’t take advantage of the anime style to do some cool speed lines like her haste-powers need. 8/10 good righteous avenger look.
Vraska, Swarm’s Eminence: Oh maaaaaan, I want to complain about the cartoonishly-young look and the weirdly-realistic background that makes her look composited in, but the artist really nailed that regal pose and took full advantage of her swirling snake-hair. This is definitely a Vraska both large and in charge. 7/10 you still get dinged for de-aging and also is she sitting or standing, it’s hard to tell.

The Phyrexians turned and fled from the shieldmage, who dropped his arcane barrier with a triumphant whoop.
“Smart choice, guys!” Teyo cheered. “Only one thing on this plane scarier than me, and that’s the…diamond…storms…”
Teyo trailed off as the desert’s usual whipping of wind grew to a fever pitch. He turned around with comical slowness to see a massive miasma of sand drifting towards him. The storm sparkled in the midday sun from shards of diamond, eliciting a panicked cry from the shieldmage, who tried to re-engage his shield, to no avail.
“No! The safety time built-in between casts! NO!”
Teyo screwed his eyes shut tight, and braced for impact. When none came, he hesitantly cracked open one eye to see an unnaturally tall Phyrexian standing over him. A former shieldmage, corrupted by glistening oil, but still able to cast a shield of her own to protect against the diamond storm. With a defeated sigh, Teyo again closed his eyes, and fell to his knees.
“Do what you’re gonna do-”
“Urgh…Teyo…I could use a hand here!”
The incompleat shieldmage glanced up with visible confusion, finally opening his eyes enough to see that the Phyrexian was facing away from him, concentrating on maintaining the shield.
“Do I…know you?” Teyo wracked his brain to recognize the other mage’s distorted voice.
“Acolyte training…” the Phyrexian hissed. “Caught you…dancing with-”
“Uh, that was never proven!” Teyo blurted, before catching himself. “…Setareh? They even got you?”
“Yeah…Look, we can kill each other later. Can we…not die, right now? Even with the upgrades, my arms are getting…”
“Oh!” Teyo leapt to his feet and began casting his own spell to bolster Setareh’s. His friend immediately relaxed, and turned her head to smile at him.
“Just like old times, right, Teyo?”
Teyo stared blankly at Setareh’s porcelain plates and exposed muscle.
“…No.”
“But…no, yeah, that’s fair. Still, truce?”
“Yeah,” Teyo grunted, as he turned his gaze out at the diamond storm. “Truce.”
