Just finished binging My Dad The Bounty Hunter.
Love to see a Bi4Bi couple in a loving relationship, but I’m undecided about the 2nd season finale’s line about pairing up Terry’s ex (Glorlox) and Tess’ ex (Adja).

I Made The Hendrix Family In Miitopia!

Yep, I Made Terry (Sabo), Tess (Janeera) Lisa And Sean.
I Tried My Best To Make The Miis Look Identical To The Show Designs (Especially Their Skin Tone Shading)
(There is no Access Code for the Miis sadly, I don't have NS online membership atm 🥲)

Gonna ramble a bit about
The Family Dynamics of My Dad the Bounty Hunter
Because I've never seen an animated property handle family conflict like this before.
Let's start with the titular character Terry Hendrix alias Sabo Brok
Tumblr media
The first thing we learn about Terry is that he's a space bounty hunter.
The second thing we learn about Terry is that he's separated from his wife Tess because his job gets in the way of being their for his family.
Tumblr media
And while Sean is still young enough not to resent his father's absence in his life Lisa is a few years older and makes it clear that she doesn't see her father as dependable.
This is mollified somewhat when the kids find out about his real job but the underlying issues: Terry's lack of communication and willingness to understand his kids. Remains the emotional linchpin of the narrative throughout season one.
When Lisa discovers that her dad's bosses are the bad guys and the person Terry's been tracking isn't a criminal but a rebel Terry doesn't listen. Prompting Lisa to help Vax behind her father's back.
Culminating in an argument in which Terry says that his job is what pays for everything their family has. An understandable motivation for a father. Parents sacrifice so many things to provide for their families.
But the thing is: Lisa is right.
Her dad's job may provide material benefits but at the cost of harming innocent people. And Terry finally decides to start listening to his family.
Then there's Tess, or rather, Janeera's relationship with her own parents. And this is where the family dynamics were really elevated for me.
Because Janeera ran away from her home after the pressure and expectations of an entire planet became too much.
For over a decade Empress Gurira and Emperor Odoman, her parents, didn't know if she was alive or dead.
Tumblr media
Janeera leaving hurt them. Hurt them so much even over a decade later their grief is an ever present reminder of her loss.
And they are allowed to be hurt. Allowed to express that to their daughter just as she is allowed to express how stifled she felt when she left. They have all of Doloraam to care for after all.
Here a lesser show would have the daughter lessen her own pain to center that of her parents. But the writers don't do that here.
Janeera's pain is recognized and validated even as she has to confront it in order to move forward.
Empress Gurira even says that she "did not see" Janeera when their actions forced her daughter to flee Doloraam. And she has no intention of repeating that mistake.
I... I don't think I can overstate how important an admission of fault like that is from a parent to a child.
So often in our media and society the children are expected to do all the emotional labor of reconciliation. To forgive and forget when their parents have not shown any understanding of what they did wrong. Promoting toxic positivity over genuine healing.
Even, perhaps especially, when said children are now adults in their own right.
My Dad the Bounty Hunter is about aliens and space adventures yes but more than that it's about broken families finding each other again.

Franck Biyong - Moonwatching 2 - new album from Cameroonian guitarist
Franck moves the limitations of African music with Moonwatching II, extending the palette of newer sounds in creative guitar music. As Afropop and Nigeria's Afrobeats are recognized worldwide, African rock is almost missing, although it’s one of the fundaments of Western rock music. Is Franck Biyong the African Jimi Hendrix? Well ... Let’s say it this way: Moonwatching II combines the abrasive sonics of James Blood Ulmer with the melodic structures of early progressive and art-‐rock. So yes, Franck (who by the way never intended to copy Jimi) naturally deals with similar topics and sounds in his music… Driven by eerie melancholy, surreal guitars, ghost voices and strong musicianship, the psychedelic music does not get transfigured through the gentle but clear melodic lines...With Moonwatching II, Franck Biyong swaggers from Funkadelic style rock before leading us to Frippertronics-‐likesound scapes...  CREDITS Cello - Tess Crowther Vocals: Melissa James (2 & 7), Haylen Namvarazad (2 & 6) Drums: Emmanuel Yakobo (3), Gabriel Oladayo (All other tracks) Piano, Fender Rhodes (4), Hammond Organ (2) - Florian Pellissier Electric Bass - Asaph Uzele (1), Antonella Mazza (2, 5, 6 & 7) Ghost voices: Silayio, Emma, Owuor, Haylen, Prisca, Ernest, Tony, Sage, Linda, Brian & other helpful spirits & ghosts Tape Effects, Percussion, Bass (3 & 4), All Guitars - FB

October Wrap Up
October is the most wonderful time of the year for two reasons. First, it’s finally fall! And second, it’s Victober, a month dedicated to reading Victorian literature! (As if that’s not my whole degree anyway haha.) I’m kind of sad it’s over. It’s been fun watching everyone’s videos over on YouTube.
Books Read: 7
I read less than I’ve read in the last few months, but most of them were great, which makes me happy. My favorite was The Beth Book by Sarah Grand, and my least favorite was Robert Browning’s Selected Poems. I’m just not a poetry person. Starred titles are audiobooks and ones marked with ® are rereads.
The Subjection of Women by John Stuart Mill - 4 stars
Selected Poems by Robert Browning - 2 stars
My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix - 4 stars *
Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy - 4 stars ®
The Beth Book by Sarah Grand - 4.5 stars
Dracula by Bram Stoker - 4 stars ®
Aurora Leigh and Other Poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning - 3 stars
On Tumblr:
I’ve got some lists on here, which means I didn’t want to do my work. 😆 Can you really blame me though? Making lists of books is a lot more fun than grading.

I'm back on tumblr with a 5th url
So i made another tumblr after not being on this website for years in hopes to use this one to enjoy as a bookblr? is that what it's called these days? it's been 10 years. I've been reading a shit ton of hades x Persephone the last month between the Lore Olympus graphic novels and the ATOD series. I also ordered the ACOTAR boxset so I'm hoping to enjoy that content soon as well. Most of the time i read horror/psychological thrillers & some bildungsroman's. The past few years i've read books like
The Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell The Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix All My Mothers by Joanna Glen After Sappho by Selby Wynn Schwartz Her Body & Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado Daddy by Emma Cline Betty by Tiffany McDaniel Slewfoot by Brom Weyward by Emilia Hart Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty Vladimir by Julia May Jonas Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll Big Swiss by Jen Beagin Fair Rosaline by Natasha Solomons Annie Bot by Sierra Greer

l word gen q s3 finale spoilers; i need to release all of these feelings good lord
bro. watching That tess scene was so devastating.. like, in the event that this show doesnt get renewed (bc bettina’s wedding very much gives series finale energy, not to mention how much of a confusing dumpster fire the show has become, i wont be surprised if it gets canned), you’re giving one of your sober characters a relapse ending, the most boring fucking route to take after completely assassinating her character all season, and in the shittiest way.
also pleeease why the fuck did we get more hendrix screentime when we couldve had a scene of angie and bella talking and bella like confessing her feels ?! jordan hull is such an incredible actress and she got so fucking sidelined into the most infuriating plotline this season. Im mad
and i cant believe im saying this, but for the first time ever bettina was my favorite part of an L word episode. round of applause for the show making me like them together. i was actually like EEEEEE when they walked in in their suits !!
also tasha looked great. love you tasha.

midyear book freakout
I’m just a little late! Thank you for the tag @pedlimwen, this is fun.
Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2021? I think it would have to be The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. But I also loved In a Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes, and The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix.
Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2021? Not sure if long series installments truly count as sequels, but that’s as close as I tend to come. Unfortunately, I read so many BAD series entries this year (Patricia Cornwall, I am seeking legal restitution from you). The best was probably getting around to Cop Job by Chris Knopf, which is not anywhere near my favorite in the Sam Acquillo Hamptons Mystery series, but still pretty good.
New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To? I picked up James Ellroy’s new book Widespread Panic as soon as it published, but I haven’t yet cracked it. Forgive me, demon dog... Also Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby.
Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2021? It’s got to be The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix, which sounds so corny and gimmicky, but I thought that about Vampires, too, and it was fantastic.
Biggest Disappointment? Lock Every Door by Riley Sager. It would take an enormous amount of convincing from a very trusted source for me to read another Sager book.
Biggest Surprise? The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen (my first by her). Though it didn’t quite come together as a whole, I loved reading it.
Favorite New Author? “Favorite” is strong, but I would certainly pick up another book by Jen Williams after reading A Dark and Secret Place.
Newest Fiction Crush? Okay, listen, I’m reading this Nora Roberts western romance from the 80s and the cowboy is very good (but a little bad).
Newest Favorite Character? Definitely Tom Ripley, of the many talents. Hate that I feel so much empathy for him! He is a horrible bastard that I can’t help cheering on! I must know what further depravity he falls into in the rest of the Ripliad.
Book That Made You Cry? A few of Ellroy’s essays, collected in Crime Wave, made me weep, in particular the one about his middle school reunion. And while I don’t think I shed actual tears, reading the potent vision of wretched depression the main characters live through in Charles Willeford’s Pick-Up was like gazing into a dangerous abyss.
Book That Made You Happy? I was having a Sick Day when I got around to the Hendrix Vampires book, and after devouring it in a couple of sittings, I was so much happier than before—despite it being a disgusting horror story, a deeply felt social examination, and also flagrantly indulging a particular insect phobia of mine (so I did have to “look away” from a few parts).
Favorite Book Adaption You Saw This Year? I can’t recall any!
Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year? I began using goodreads again in earnest this year, though I’ve already fallen off in use, due to busy-ness. The reviews I write are mainly for myself, to figure out exactly what it was that worked (or more often didn’t). If I love a book, I generally don’t write anything. If I dislike it, I need to examine why.
Most Beautiful Book You Bought So Far This Year? Sadly most things I bought were totally utilitarian. Even the Chip Kidd design on Widespread Panic is very whatever, in my opinion. There are some beauties on my “wants” list, though.
What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year? I’m looking mournfully at my teetering tbr pile, which doesn’t even include L.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America's Most Seductive City. I read the first half in 2020 but I really need to finish the rest, for research.
