Chavis Mármol's Neo-Tamene (from the series)

Sculptor Chavis Mármol has never owned a car, but that’s never inhibited his drive. Earlier this month, the 42-year-old Mexico City-based artist (who travels largely by bicycle) dropped a nine-ton replica of an Olmec head onto the roof of a blue Tesla Model 3.

The car was donated by Colima 71,, a boutique hotel in Mexico City.

The work is a mix of humor and criticism that explores the Mexican pre-Hispanic past from a Western neo-colonial perspective.

The new Model 3 EV will be well-stocked in specification with Performance design, sports seats, adaptive suspension, adaptive damping, ventilated seats, 20” Warp alloys, performance brakes, 15.4” centre touchscreen, 8” second row display in the back, studio sound quality with the 17-sepaker system (including dual subwoofers and amplifiers), phone key integration, wireless phone charging, glass roof, carbon fibre details inside, navigation and Track Mode. The Enhanced Autopilot (at £3,400) adds navigation on Autopilot and auto lane change with the Full Self-driving Capability (at £6,800) adding more autonomous driving including traffic light and stop control.

On colours, select from Pearl White, Deep Blue, Solid Black, Ultra Red and the new Stealth Grey. Only the 20” alloys are available. But you can select your own interior choice with the standard black or the chargeable white available. Other than your dedicated charge point, you are good to go.

But how does the Model 3 Performance perform? This AWD Saloon will have a 75 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.3 seconds, 163 mph top speeds and 461 kW (or 618hp). Expect a combined winter range of 235 miles with warmer weather allowing for 325 miles – a 285 mile combined. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour and 15 mins 0 – 100% charging times with the 250 kW DC maximum allowing 27 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 594L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 152 mpg. It also no confirmed Bidirectional capabilities yet. The Heat Pump is standard.

But how will the 2024 Model 3 perform - is the battery / charging and range better? Well, the answer depends on the option you choose with two key selections so far:

RWD - the £39,990 model will have a 57.5 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 6.1 seconds, 125 mph top speeds and 208 kW (or 279 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 215 miles with warmer weather allowing for 305 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 6 hours and 15 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 170 kW DC maximum allowing 25 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 594L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 183 mpg. This option can tow 750kg (unbraked) and 1000kg (braked).  This EV will have no Bidirectional charging; and

AWD - the £49,990 model will have a 75 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 4.4 seconds, 125 mph top speeds and 366 kW (or 491 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 260 miles with warmer weather allowing for 365 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hours and 15 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 250 kW DC maximum allowing 27 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 594L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 170 mpg. This option can tow 750kg (unbraked) and 1000kg (braked).  This EV will have no Bidirectional charging.

New Tesla Model 3 v BYD Seal: Ultimate review!

BYD hit the headlines recently as it overtook Tesla for the most electric cars sold in Q4 2023. The question is, which of these EV manufacturers makes the best electric saloon - Tesla with the Model 3, or BYD with the Seal? Well for starters, let’s check out the design. This may be the new Tesla Model 3, but it hasn’t changed a whole lot since the previous edition. There’s a new front & rear bumper, along with a few minor design tweaks, but otherwise, the car looks pretty similar at the front and the rear. Along the side, the car is pretty much identical, apart from a set of new alloy wheel designs! The BYD is also pretty tidy, although we are getting a few Tesla vibes from the design. Creases along the side help it stand out, and there are some pretty smart fins at the bottom of the rear doors. Otherwise, though, both cars are fairly similar when it comes to their look and design. Take a step inside, and you’ll find more of the same! Both cars come with a huge 15-inch screen stuck to the middle of the dash, and these are used to control pretty much all the features in either car! However, there are a few features that differentiate the BYD from the Tesla. Not only does it have a normal drive mode selector, but it also comes with traditional indicator stalks! In the Tesla, you have to select drive mode through the screen, and you need to indicate with buttons on the steering wheel. The BYD is also the only car out of the two to come with both a digital dial and a heads-up display. Everything in the Tesla is housed in the infotainment screen. When it comes to the price, the two are once again pretty evenly matched. The single motor editions of the Tesla and BYD start at around £40,000 and £45,000 respectively, but when you look at the dual motor editions, expect to spend around £50,000 for the Tesla, and just under £49,000 for the BYD! So will the Tesla reign supreme? Or will Mat prefer the BYD? You’ll need to watch the video to find out for yourself!
