Famed for hosting several of the world's tallest mountains, Nepal has a natural need for aviation despite its unforgiving terrain. The landlocked Himalayan nation's mountainous topography and delicate biodiversity means the construction of freeways is not feasible. Nepal has embraced aviation in ways that no other nation has exhibited. Bush aeroplanes ferry passengers and essential cargo to and from remote regions that are otherwise unreachable by road. In several towns, everything from medicine to newspapers and construction supplies are flown in regularly. Short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) aircraft such as the De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, Dornier Do-228, and Pilatus PC-6 Skyporter are the staple of Nepal's domestic aviation scene. Here, a Twin Otter of flag carrier Royal Nepal Airlines is seen at the remote town of Lukla. The sleepy mountainside village is a popular launching point for tourists on their way to Mount Everest. The town hosts a small airport that has gained the reputation of being the world's most dangerous. Tenzing-Hillary Airport is perched precariously on a cliff face with only one side each of the runway available for takeoffs and landings. The runway's 12% gradient helps landing aircraft to slow down and departing aircraft to gain speed. Only experienced pilots who passed rigorous certification by Nepal's civil aviation body are allowed to fly to Lukla. Despite this, several mishaps have happened over the years. As for the aircraft pictured, 9N-ABX was delivered new to Royal Nepal Airlines on 10 January 1986. On 19 April 2010, she was damaged on landing at Kangel Danda but was repaired. She has since been stored in a hangar in Kathmandu, with its wings, landing gear fairings, and part of nosecone missing.
