On the night of 30 May 1967, a Vickers Super VC10 of East African Airways suffered a total engine flameout over the Indian Ocean. At around 15,000 feet, a warning sounded and the engines died down. Unable to sustain altitude, the autopilot began pushing the nose down to maintain airspeed. The aircraft was saved just in time when the flight engineer, who had been in the lavatory over dysentery cramps, returned to his seat and was able to restore power to all four engines. The official cause was never determined but an EAA's chief of flight engineer training suspected crew error. During the first week of July 1997, a coup d'etat erupted in Cambodia between the armies of the two (yes, two) prime ministers who were trying to topple each other. Fighting broke out across Phnom Penh on 4 June. Some of the heavy fightings took place at Pochentong International Airport. Over the next few days, the airport was subject to gunfire and shelling resulting in the suspension of regular services. It was not until 8 June that the airport was secured and rescue flights to airlift foreigners out of Phnom Penh commenced. One of the most memorable images I saw of the conflict was a @flypal @boeing 737-300 parked in front of the bullet-riddled control tower. The shaky footage — shot from across the control tower — showed people making a mad dash across the ramp and into the aircraft. I was barely 8 years old then, so I don't remember what was said about the footage. It's not clear to me whether it was indeed an evacuation flight or if it was a regular PAL flight that got stranded in the crossfire. One thing's for sure: for our fellow countrymen escaping hell, seeing our flag's familiar colors on the tail brings a sense of relief and safety. Freight has always been an integral part of Singapore's history and economic growth. Singapore's strategic location between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea have made it an ideal hub for trade and transport between the West and the Far East. The mouth of Singapore River, as well as its banks, bustled with vessels of all shapes and sizes. Merchant ships and bumboats alike ply wares from all over the world. Ships remain king in the Singaporean trade scene up to this day but since the latter half of the 20th century, aircraft have also taken a significant role in the city-state's cargo sector. Since its formation in 1972, @singaporeair has taken an active role in boosting the country's air cargo traffic. In the beginning, most cargo with SIA were loaded into the bellies of passenger aircraft. As the 1970s progressed, SIA converted a handful of its Boeing 707 and 737-100 into full freighter configuration. In 1992, Singapore Airlines Cargo was established as a separate cargo airline. Not long after, SIA Cargo received its first Boeing 747-400F dubbed the Mega Ark. The 747-400F was a radical departure from narrowbody aircraft that SIA Cargo used to operate. Prior to the 747, the airline had lone examples each of the McDonnell Douglas DC-8-73 and 737-300 full cargo aircraft. The Mega Ark, with its biblical proportions, allowed SIA Cargo to become a major player in the global cargo scene. SIA Cargo flew regular flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. Other cities worldwide were served through charters. By the airline's incorporation in 2001, SIA Cargo had a fleet of nine 747-400Fs. SIA Cargo was reintegrated as a division within the SIA Group in 2018. Capping off this year's acquisition of @antonov_company releases by @yrdmodel is the Antonov An-225 in current livery. In 2009, the world's sole An-225 was painted in the yellow and blue colours of @antonovairlines. The mould is as equally impressive as the version with the Buran space shuttle. In comparison to the smaller An-124, the fuselage cross section remains the same although the slightly longer nose of the An-225 is also noticeable. Another great release this year by @yrdmodel is the Antonov An-124. It comes in two liveries: @antonovairlines (which I'm yet to acquire) and @volgadneprgroup (pictured here). As with YRD's other @antonov_company releases, the quality is comparable to more expensive diecast metal ones that uou can't tell it's plastic until you get to physically hold it. One noticeable feature on the manufacturer's Antonov line is that the cargo doors (nose and rear) aren't painted, which I think is alright. In reality, you won't get to notice the cargo door outlines unless you observe the aircraft in close proximity. The outer engines of the An-124 are also slung at just the right elevation. Some diecast moulds of the An-124 have the outer engines nearly kissing the surface. So far, so good for YRD. A well-deserved Christmas treat for myself. I seldom buy non-metal airplanes, let alone include them in my formal collection of diecast aircraft, but new player YRD Model of China has this year released a handful of Antonov cargo aircraft. The models are made of high-grade plastic with details comparable to more expensive diecast metal ones. This Antonov An-225 in original livery with a piggybacked Buran space shuttle is so far the peak of its releases. The quality is so good it even landed a review on @yesterairlines, which previously only reviewed diecast metal aircraft. To date, only @herpa_official and YRD have released the An-225 with Buran. If YRD stays on its track in producing high-quality plastic models, it may offer a viable alternative for collectors who want to save on their pennies.
