Freight has always been an integral part of Singapore's history and economic growth. Singapore's strategic location between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea have made it an ideal hub for trade and transport between the West and the Far East. The mouth of Singapore River, as well as its banks, bustled with vessels of all shapes and sizes. Merchant ships and bumboats alike ply wares from all over the world. Ships remain king in the Singaporean trade scene up to this day but since the latter half of the 20th century, aircraft have also taken a significant role in the city-state's cargo sector. Since its formation in 1972, @singaporeair has taken an active role in boosting the country's air cargo traffic. In the beginning, most cargo with SIA were loaded into the bellies of passenger aircraft. As the 1970s progressed, SIA converted a handful of its Boeing 707 and 737-100 into full freighter configuration. In 1992, Singapore Airlines Cargo was established as a separate cargo airline. Not long after, SIA Cargo received its first Boeing 747-400F dubbed the Mega Ark. The 747-400F was a radical departure from narrowbody aircraft that SIA Cargo used to operate. Prior to the 747, the airline had lone examples each of the McDonnell Douglas DC-8-73 and 737-300 full cargo aircraft. The Mega Ark, with its biblical proportions, allowed SIA Cargo to become a major player in the global cargo scene. SIA Cargo flew regular flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. Other cities worldwide were served through charters. By the airline's incorporation in 2001, SIA Cargo had a fleet of nine 747-400Fs. SIA Cargo was reintegrated as a division within the SIA Group in 2018. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. That Murphy is crazy we know. Will the plane breakdown, will the FDA hold up clearance, will customs become intransigent, will the cargo get damaged in transit, will the truck picking it from the airport have an accident, will it get rained on Singapore, seized in Hong Kong Kong, frozen in Alaska? Well, we plan for the worst and expect the best. But it’s fun watching the plane come with our cargo. We only use Singapore airlines for our cargo. They are far from perfect. They can get a little snotty and difficult to communicate with.  Still they are miles ahead of any other airline. The only airlines we trust to carry our cargo. Let’s hope they won’t screw it up just when we need them the most.

Notice the difference in the leading edge flaps on this 747-400F on final approach at DFW- the inboard set of leading edge flaps are Kruger flaps (and flatter) while the set of leading edge flaps outboard of the inboard engines is curved as they are variable camber leading edge flaps. On the 747-400 series, there are three inboard Kruger flaps, five variable camber LE flaps between the engines, and six variable camber LE flaps outboard of the outboard engines. The 747 Classics, having a shorter wingspan, lack one variable camber LE flap outboard. The variable camber flaps are a flexible material that stows flat on the underside of the wing like a Krueger flap but a scissor-like actuator link flexes it into the cambered shape upon extension- hence its name, variable camber LE flap. The mechanism was complex but has proved to be reliable in operational service with the 747 Classics and 747-400 family. Upon landing, the actuation of the thrust reversers causes the inboard Krueger flaps and the variable camber LE flaps between the engines to momentarily retract and then redeploy when the reversers are stowed.
