I created this for the Gensokyo Zine! I wanted to draw Jo'on at the Myouren temple with some tenshion in the background. I feel as if Jo'on's connection to the Myouren temple is underrepresented in fanworks, and I think there should be more art of her participitating in the activities of the temple.

The other night I dreamed that I was roleplaying on a MUD or something. Now, in the waking world, in a MUD, every "room" (that is, a discrete location in the game's world) needs to be an actual object in a database; you can do some minor shenanigans, but they won't be "in different places", they're still functionally one location for all practical purposes. However, in the dream, I discovered an area where you could, like, enter a sort of procedural gardnen where each room corresponded to an "RGB color", meaning there were 16777216 rooms. In one room, two people were RPing Tenshi Hinanawi and Shion Yorigami as girlfriends; one of them may have been a former friend I had a falling out with years ago.
I may have briefly woken up and then fallen asleep again, but as I was waking up completely the second time, my brain produced the statement, "The word 'virus'" (referring to the biological kind) "has exactly two syllables; however, using our new antivirus software, we can fix that!" What does that mean. My subconscious will clearly not be taking any questions at this time.

Day 2 - Pride (Tenshi/Shion)
“Do you even care if you hurt others with what you say?” Reimu scolded Tenshi in front of her shrine. “She’s supposed to be your girlfriend, treat her that way!” Ordinarily, such lectures would be Kasen’s purview, but the hermit would not dare to criticize a celestial so openly. Seeing Tenshi put down Shion so often when they visited the shrine had finally spurred the shrine maiden to say something about it. This time, she felt Tenshi had gone so far. Usually, Shion rolled with the subtle jabs and put-downs Tenshi used to pump up her ego, but this time Tenshi’s barbs had moved the poverty goddess to tears.
“Why do you care?” The haughty celestial spat back at Reimu. “Besides, Shion understands my greatness, and she is honored to be allowed to spend so much time with the great Tenshi!”
“Listen to yourself!” How can you live with yourself when you treat her like that? Reimu kept that thought to herself. Tenshi had a short temper and while Reimu would have loved nothing more than to pound her senseless, that would do nothing to make the celestial treat her girlfriend better. “Shion loves you but you’re so blinded by your pride that you don’t even pay attention to her!”
“O-of course she loves me!” Tenshi’s voice wavered a bit and her lip curled. Reimu wondered if she was getting through to her. “I’m me, after all!”
“Look at her. Do you feel better about yourself for making her cry? Was all the time you spent together meaningless?” Reimu grabbed Tenshi by the shoulders and spun her to face the poverty goddess. Shion sat on the veranda of the shrine, by the empty donation box, with her face in her knees. She thought back to the times she had spent with Shion on dates, the only times she had ever seen the miserable girl smile. Had she stayed with Shion only to make herself happy? To have someone so miserable around, that just looking at her would make Tenshi feel better about herself? Or did she truly care for her? Tenshi started at the ground for a long time, lost in thought.
It was Reimu who broke the silence. “You need to go talk to her.” Tenshi swallowed her fear and began walking towards Shion. Reimu had wanted to tell her to stop coming by her shrine if she wasn’t going to treat Shion better but hadn’t expected Tenshi to work up the nerve to go talk to Shion so quickly. She grabbed her broom and began sweeping so she looked occupied while she listened to what Tenshi was about to say.
“Hey Shion,” Tenshi said with noticeable hesitation, which made Shion look up at her. Bringing her hands together, the celestial twiddled her thumbs and held her breath, trying to delay what she had to say. Looking into Shion’s eyes, puffy from crying, she felt a complex mix of emotions swarm up inside her. At last, she spoke.
“I-I’m sorry,” she blurted out. She couldn’t believe she was apologizing to someone so far beneath her. “When I said those things, I didn’t mean it. I just, j-just…” she stumbled over the words, trembling. Of course she meant it. Part of the reason she loved Shion was how superior she felt over the poverty goddess when they were together. This was stupid. There was nothing she could do or say to truly apologize. Emptying her mind, she did the only thing she could think of. Leaning forward, she kissed Shion.
Her eyes were already wide with surprise, but Shion’s eyes now grew even wider. A blush spread across her face as the warmth of Tenshi’s lips and the scent of peaches filled her senses. Tenshi gently embraced Shion, caressing her as they kissed. After Tenshi pulled away, the two stared into each other’s eyes.
“Do you really mean it? Then why did you say I’m smelly and worthless?” Shion asked.
“I don’t know! When I’m alone with you, I want nothing more than to see you smile. But when we got out together, I have to show the others the pride and superiority of a celestial, and put them in their place! Then I end up saying those things…” Tenshi kicked at the dirt where she stood.
“D-do you not want to be with me anymore?” Each question Shion asked felt like a knife driven further and further into Tenshi’s heart.
“N-no! I want to be with you! It’s like there’s two of me and only one of them says those things. But really, they’re both the same… I probably sound like I’m trying to make excuses, and maybe I am.” Again, Tenshi felt that nothing she could say would make it up to Shion. Self-loathing welled up within her, and her fists balled in anger.
“Perhaps it’s better if you leave a worthless miser like me alone…” Shion looked like she was about to cry again, shocking Tenshi out of her self-hatred. Panicking, Tenshi almost moved in for another kiss but realized that wouldn’t do anything at this point. Instead, she put her hands on Shion’s shoulders, looked her directly in the eyes, and spoke freely.
“No! You deserve to be loved, to have someone by your side. Maybe I’m not the best person for this. I’m haughty, selfish, and only ever cause trouble. Heaven kicked me out ‘cause of my behavior, so now I’m stuck on this crummy Earth. I thought I was going to die of boredom until I met you. You made my life here bearable. I know I’m being selfish, but I want to be with you too. Maybe you don’t want to be around me as I am now, I know I wouldn’t. But, I promise you, I want to change. I need to become a better person. Shion Yorigami, I love you, and want to become someone worthy of your love. I swear on my pride as a celestial.”
“Tenshi…” Shion burst into tears, but now they were tears of joy. The two embraced, and after Shion had settled down, walked away from the shrine hand-in-hand. Reimu watched them with a smile on her face. She knew the two had a very long way to go before their relationship could be described as anything approaching healthy, but felt like she had helped to nudge Tenshi onto the right track. Now she understood why Kasen enjoyed lecturing her so much. Seeing someone realize their wrongs and change because of you was an uplifting feeling. She couldn’t wait for the next time Marisa visited, for she had some choice words for her now.
